Houston Food Bank Back 2 School Fest
ven though it’s only July, people are already getting ready for students to go back to school. Of course, getting started early always helps, and the Houston Food Bank is getting ready to do its part in helping students start their school year successfully. Throughout July, the Houston Food Bank will be partnering with the City of Houston to help prepare over 25,000 backpacks for students. These backpacks will be stuffed with school supplies and be distributed to students at the upcoming Mayer’s Back 2 School Fest. The Mayor’s Back 2 School Fest is focused on helping economically disadvantaged students throughout Houston. The focus of the event is on helping the families of elementary school students prepare for the upcoming school year. Although the backpacks and school supplies are a big part of the event, the festival also provides families with health screenings, immunizations, and other necessary social services. These are all

provided free of charge to help alleviate the economic strain of getting ready for school again. Anyone hoping to volunteer for the event should register with the Houston Food Bank. You can go online at http:// www.houstonfoodbank. civicare.com and register to join. Not only will this give you access to volunteer opportunities as part of the Back 2 School Fest, but you’ll also be able to contribute to plenty of other volunteer events. If you’re hoping to put together backpacks for students, then volunteers will be preparing backpacks on July 15th and 22nd. These volunteer shifts begin at eight in the morning and run through noon. Volunteers will meet at the Houston Food Bank warehouse, located at 535 Portwall Street, and
work through the morning to get the backpacks ready. Volunteers that want to participate as part of a group can reach the Houston Food Bank at one of several email addresses. All volunteers are also encouraged to be part of the new Pencil Drive designed to help teachers. Anyone arriving to help with a volunteer event can bring some pencils and leave them in the collection bin. The pencils will then be collected and distributed to teachers throughout the city. Although the volunteer shifts will be running over weekends in July, the festival will be held in August. Volunteers are encouraged to spread the word about the event. Since the event isn’t open to the public, attendees will have to register to attend by July 21, 2017. Volunteers are also encouraged to share other details about the event. The festival will be free for registered attendees, families are encouraged to attend with their students, and the event itself will be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Shift parking is available both in the front parking lot and at the rear overflow lot, which is opened when there is large volunteer turnout. If you need more July 2017

The Emoji Movie
In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become “normal” like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Anna Faris). Together, they embark on an epic “app-venture” through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it’s deleted forever.

Super Bowl Champ and his Family Advance as Champions for Children with New Kiddie Academy
N
FL 2012 Super Bowl Champion and Buffalo Bills Safety James Ihedigbo, along with his wife Brittany and mother, Dr. Rose Ihedigbo, are launching a family business dedicated to the care and education of children. This summer the Ihedigbos will open a new Lakes of Savannah Kiddie Academy® in Rosharon, Texas. Building a Kiddie Academy may seem rather unconventional for a professional football player, but when you look at Ihedigbo’s family history and track record of educational-based community service, it’s no surprise the 10-year NFL Pro Safety should want to create a special environment where children can learn, thrive and grow. His mother, Dr. Rose Ihedigbo, has been a champion for children, and an Early Care and Education Specialist for over 30 years, and his father was always a staunch advocate for creating educational opportunities for children and young adults! “Making a difference in the lives of children is huge priority for Brittany and I,” said James, “and it’s been a big priority in my family for as long as I can remember. This new Kiddie Academy is well aligned with our goals.
It is designed to give busy parents peace of mind that their children are safe and will be well cared for in an environment that will enable them to learn and grow socially, physically, emotionally and intellectually.” Kiddie Academy® is the leading provider of comprehensive education-based child care programs for children ages 6 weeks through 12 years old. The Kiddie Academy® Lakes of Savannah will serve area families and their children by offering quality education and the highest July 2017

parents earned their PhD’s in education and created a sustained opportunity for people from their home country and a vocational school in Nigeria. Sadly, James’ father, Apollos, passed away in 2002, and was only able to see a portion of his dream to help those that had a drive to succeed, but lacked the resources and the support to do so, become a reality. When James was drafted to the NFL in 2007, he launched the Hope Africa USA charity and used his new professional platform to further his father’s dream of higher education for all, by providing scholarships and educational opportunities to hundreds of students nationwide. standards of child care in full time care, before-school and after-school care, and summer camp programs. “We are very excited to bring the Academy’s unique services to children and families in the Lakes of Savannah area,” said Brittany. “No matter where the NFL takes us, Texas will always be home to James and I. This is the perfect place and the perfect time to open an educational child-care center that will help local children develop the confidence and self-esteem they need to meet the challenges of tomorrow!” As parents themselves, the Ihedigbos said they recognize the tremendous level of trust parents and caregivers have to place in a childcare provider, so they set out to create an environment that is as clean, safe, and nurturing as a child’s own home. They also wanted to create a center that would provide more than just daycare, and with 35 years of educational child-care experience, Kiddie Academy more than fit the bill. The Ihedigbo’s new Kiddie Academy
will provide educational daycare in the Greater Rosharon Area, with specialized curriculum for Infants (6 weeks – 12 months), Toddlers (13 – 24 months), Early Preschool (2 Year Olds), Preschool (3 Year Olds), Pre-K (4 Year Olds), Kindergarten (5 Year Olds), and School Age Programs (6 years - 12 years), along with Summer Camps, music and more. The Center will provide an environment where children can be creative and happy, focusing on days filled with learning and fun, and age-appropriate activities to help them grow socially, as well. This new venture is a perfect fit for the Ihedigbos. James has long been a strong proponent for education. His family immigrated from a small village in Nigeria to the United States in the 1980’s, with dreams of higher education and the determination to make those dreams a reality. His mother and father held a variety of odd jobs, while also caring for James and his four siblings, in order to attend the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Both of his
Today, the new Kiddie Academy® Lakes of Savannah is providing the Ihedigbos an opportunity to continue a family legacy of being Champions for children and education, by extending their goals to help make a difference in children’s lives at an earlier age, with one of the country’s best educational child-care companies, in a location that’s near and dear to their hearts. Open Enrollment for the Ihedigbo’s Kiddie Academy® Lakes of Savannah is currently in progress. Appointments can be made by calling 832569-4847. The Academy is scheduled to open in July, 2017, at 5158 Savannah Pkwy., in Rosharon, Texas. For more information visit https:// kiddieacademy.com/academies/ lakes-of-savannah/.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Honored With Quality Achievement Award For Stroke Care
“A stroke patient loses 1.9 million neurons every minute stroke treatment is delayed. That’s why Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is committed to delivering advanced stroke treatments to patients quickly and safely,” said James Ling, M.D., medical director of the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Stroke Program. “This award recognizes our team’s hard work and dedication to the acute treatment of stroke patients.” Houston Methodist Sugar Land has developed a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients seen in the Emergency Department. This includes always being equipped to provide brain imaging scans, having neurologists available to conduct patient evaluations and using clotbusting medications when appropriate. “We will continue with our focus on providing care that has been shown in the scientific literature to quickly and efficiently treat stroke patients with evidence-based protocols,” said Deanna Powell, stroke coordinator at Houston Methodist Sugar Land. To receive the Gold Plus award, Houston Methodist Sugar Land achieved an 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke quality achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month intervals and achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight Get With The GuidelinesStroke quality measures. These quality measures are designed to help hospital teams follow the most up-to-

ouston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has been recognized for its commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to national standards and recommendations. The hospital received the award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite.
date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. To qualify for the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clotbuster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. If given intravenously in the first three hours after the start of stroke symptoms, tPA has been shown to significantly reduce the effects of stroke and lessen the chance of permanent disability. “The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association recognizes Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital for its commitment to stroke care,” said Paul Heidenreich, M.D., M.S., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines Steering Committee and professor of medicine at Stanford University. “Research has shown there are benefits to patients who are treated at hospitals that have adopted the Get With The Guidelines program.”
According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and nearly 800,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. Camping and the Wilderness in Our Backyard
f you like the outdoors—fishing, hiking, or camping—then you surely agree that Summer is the best time for all that. So, pack your backpack with your tent, your camping utensils, food you can cook on the campfire, light clothes, and bug repellent (don’t forget the bug repellent!). These are places where camping is allowed and safe for the family. Some are close, and some require a longer drive, but they are all certainly worth it. Calling ahead is always a good idea, as you may need to make reservations beforehand. And while some of these recommended places offer amenities and even Wi-Fi, why not let the beauty and wonders of Mother Nature really sink in and put down those phones, tablets and computers? Lake Houston Wilderness Park Located North of Houston, in New Caney, TX, this park allows tent camping. It offers hiking and horse trails, wildlife viewing, as well as picnic areas. There are restrooms with showers, drinking water and other comforts. The park is open year round, and charges a small fee per tent. For more information, call (281) 3998464
Spring Creek Park A free campsite situated in Tomball, just NW of Houston, this 114-acre facility features a softball field, two tennis courts, a basketball pavilion, and barbequing pavilions. RV/camper hook-ups, three tent camping sites, one primitive camping area, a playground, trails, picnic tables, an archery range, a sand volleyball court, and a rest room/shower facilities are just some of the things this site has to offer. Tour permits are required for overnight scout camping and multiple day special scouting events. Call (281) 353-8100 for more information. Buffalo Run Park In less time than it takes to get to work in the infamous Houston traffic, Buffalo Run Park offers four lakes that are connected and navigable by boat (no wake rule in effect). There are playgrounds for kids ages 2-12, fishing piers, a sand volleyball court, hiking and biking trails, grills, and an observation tower. Night camping in tents is not allowed, but being so close, Buffalo Run Park is a great place to take the family for some awesome fishing, games, bird

and nature watching, or just plain relaxing. Call (281) 403-8637 for more information. Lakeview RV Resort If you aren’t ready to take the plunge and go full tent camping, RV camping is always a great alternative. Lakeview RV resort is strictly an RV park (no tents are allowed), and it offers some great amenities while still keeping the “camping” perspective. Close to NRG Stadium, the Houston Zoo and the Museum District, this resort has a fishing lake, business center, Wi-Fi, outdoor grills and kitchen facilities, concrete pads with full hookups, a gym and a hot tub. There are also cabins for rent if you wish to forego the RV. For more information, call (713) 7230973 Enchanted Rock State Natural Area Formed from cooled magma underneath the Earth’s crust, this enormous pink granite dome is located North of Fredericksburg, and it’s worth the 4-hour drive from Houston. Designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1936, and a US National Natural Landmark in 1971. For a small fee, you may pitch a tent, and camp overnight. There are trails of different difficulties, from trails that even kids and older visitors can handle, to more advanced ones, so there is something for everyone. Legend has it that Tonkawa, Comanche and Apache Native Americans named the place, because they believed that a Spanish conquistador cast a spell on the place, causing magical ghost fires to glow at the top. Also, sounds that can be heard at night, like screeching and groaning, contributed to the mystical attributes of the rock. Enchanted Rock can be visited all year round, but the Summit Trail may close in inclement weather. Call (830) 685-3636 to plan ahead. July 2017

Spending More Quality Time and Less Time Worrying About Saftey
By Cindy Trachtenberg
off the little white door stoppers, and I found him chewing on them. Heavens to Betsy, he could have died! So again, I had to call Precious Baby Protectors to have them all changed out. While he was here, I asked Rick about the outlets. Ok, so now we have all child proof outlets! My older three never got into anything so I thought the two babies would be the same. They are ten times worse! Well actually, the first time I called Rick was to put up some gates as this is the first two story home we have had, and I thought just telling them “no” would stop the kids from trying to get up or fall down the stairs. I was so worried that the gates wouldn’t look nice, but they match my wrought iron so well, it really worked out great. And no one has fallen down the steps either! That is the bottom line, I guess. I really loved this house and it had enough bedrooms for all the kids and then some, but the pool scared me. You know even if you keep the doors locked with dead bolts, someone else’s kid could fall in. Oh, I was a nervous wreck until we got that pool fence up. POOL GUARD TEXAS installed it, best price and all the employees were very nice. It looks really good; I have to say. It has a self-closing gate, so if the older kids forget to shut it, the gate closes itself. Really cool, and I am sure glad we did that. I really feel so much better about having the pool now.

o, ok if you have kids there is no way the summer is easy. With the kids being home from school, the baby and the toddler my life is far from easy. Usually when I cook, the kids are in school. So now I have to watch that my pot handles are not facing the walking area. I could just see Jenni, now that she is walking, pull the whole pot down on her! Another trip to the Urgent Care, and they’ll call CPS on me. With it being summer and the bigger kids just running outside on a whim, it
is hard to keep Sammy, my 2-year-old from running after them. I had to have Rick from Precious Baby Protectors come out and put some grab locks on my doors, just high enough that the babies can’t reach them, but (hee hee) the second grader can’t run out either. I keep telling all the kids to watch out for the little toys and marbles on the floor, (so my little ones don’t choke on them) ... little did I know that the Fidget Spinner that I bought all the bigger kids has little pieces that can fall off and they all can choke on. Speaking of choking, my Sammy managed to take
When we were going to buy this house, I thought it would be a good idea for all the kids to learn to swim so they all took lessons, even the two babies. That is an extra layer of protection that I am glad we invested in. I think we have most of our bases covered to get thru this summer. Now if we could just escape the heat in Houston...oh, yeah, how many more days did you say until school starts again?

Choosing Face Time over Facebook
ow are your relationships? Did you know that more than anything else in our lives it is our relationships that will dictate for each of us how happy we are in life? Yes, my friends… the people that we are connected to actually have more of an impact on our overall health that our genetics, choices in exercise or diet. So, it goes without saying that we should choose our friends wisely even in old age! Many of our friendships are actually tended to on social media. These friendships are interesting because we spend enormous amounts of time perusing our “friends” walls and often we like and share but are we really connecting? I don’t think so. Studies show that on average we spend up to 16 hours a day on social media… that’s an awful lot of time to not really be doing anything and having the false sense of connecting can be

hazardous to our health! Dr. Oz calls the latest trend we face in stress “adult loneliness” instigated by the 60% of time spent on “Drive by Friendships.” This simply isn’t healthy to choose Face Book over FaceTime. Making the most of your relationships takes a little time and effort but it is well worth the rewards gained. Too often we do not stop and make that call each week to our brother or sister only to find time slipped into months and months into years and then something happens and they are gone. I always make a point to hug all of my friends so they know the last time they saw me we had that exchange. I try to call family weekly and touch base with my daughter every day. If our quality of life is attached so closely to our wellness, then it would seem obvious for us to make sure we incorporate ways to nurture our
relationships. Earlier I mentioned my hugging my friends and this is one way that you too can make sure to literally touch those around you. Another way is to spend quality time with your loved ones. I like to set aside specific times so that my priorities of making my friendships first stays first. Often in my “list” column I give you ideas each month of things to do with the children and your spouse. You need to set aside afternoons to have a picnic or to watch a movie with those you love. I’d say each of us could stand to clean up a little in our management of friendships. By eliminating wasted time viewing cyber friendships and fostering face time with those close to you that you love and cherish you’ll find yourself overall healthier. That’s something we should all subscribe to!

re you a lover of history? If you’ve ever wondered what life was like in Roman times or just have a fascination with ancient gladiators, then you’ll be happy to know that the Houston Museum of Natural Science is bringing a new exhibit to Houston. Running throughout the summer and into September, “Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum” is an exciting look into the lives of the fighters who battled in ancient Rome. The sport of gladiatorial combat dates back thousands of years to a time when the Roman Empire hosted combatants in its famed Coliseum. As many as 80,000 spectators would gather for these famous battles, which consisted of fights between not only human fights, but with animals as well. Although these fights were most famously known to take place at the Roman Coliseum, smaller exhibition fights were held throughout the empire. In fact, in 2004, one of the world’s bestpreserved gladiator burial grounds was found in northern England. Located

so far from Rome, this was one more sign of how popular the sport was throughout the Roman world of the time. The people who fought in these battles were considered representative of Rome’s appreciation for fighting abilities, and many gladiators inspired admiration. Some were even popularly known in the same way that many sports heroes are recognized today. Although the era of gladiatorial combat is far behind us, there are many artifacts from that time period that remain with us today. The Houston Museum of Natural Sciences will be giving people a chance to take a look at these ancient items first-hand. Visitors will find a collection of armor, other archaeological objects, and even a three-dimensional model of the Colosseum from its most popular period. There were even be lectures about gladiators for the true history enthusiast. Many of the objects that will be on display have never been features in any exhibit outside of Italy before, making this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see some of these archaeological
treasures. These pieces have been gathered from the Colosseum and brought in from other Italian museums to create one of the most insightful exhibits about gladiators ever created. The exhibit hopes to detail the lives of these gladiators not only when they were in front of an audience but also when they were going about their private lives. These fighters lived disciplined lives that include ongoing physical training and an almost militarylike regulation to their lives. Though there was a constant risk of death, there was also the chance for fame and wealth. If you’re hoping to visit, the museum is open between nine in the morning and five in the afternoon. Tickets can be purchased at the museum or online, at http://www.hmns.org. Tickets are $20 for seniors and children, and $30 for an adult. After your tour of gladiator life is over, you can also stay at the museum to witness their many other exhibits featuring everything from dinosaur bones to Egyptian mummies.
