alloween is just around the corner. The wind is getting cooler and the leaves are turning colors, which sets the mood for ghost stories out on the front porch. For kids, this is one of the most anticipated dates they have marked on the calendar (besides the latest iPhone launch date). As parents, the spirit of the holiday brings back nostalgic memories of walking around the neighborhood with friends, trading candies, and showing off your costume.

By Michael Miraflores

on how to make sure their kids stay out trouble and harm.

Outdoor enthusiasts carry these around when hiking through the wilderness and are made to have a high pitch so that they can be heard for miles. Emergency whistles could also scare off potential attackers. 3. Bring your dog. Not only will your dog get a much-needed exercise as your kids walk through various neighborhoods, it will act as a brave protector and companion. Make sure that your dog is well-behaved and does not have a history of aggression.

However, the times have changed since you donned your ghoul costume (a.k.a. a white blanket with holes crudely cut out for eyes). Neighbors no longer keep their doors unlocked, there are more cars on the road, and kids would rather hunt for Pokemon on their smartphones than a pack of Twizzlers. This is to say that safety has become a top priority over the years.

1. Download a crime map app. This will allow you and your teenagers to see which areas of town you should avoid, especially whilst walking around at night.

Here are some safety tips for parents

2. Give your children safety whistles.

4. If you follow your children and their friends in your car, be sure to turn on your emergency lights so you don’t cause a back up in traffic and always be aware of your surroundings. Halloween is the most pedestrian-centric holiday and it’s always smart to drive very slowly. The upside is that when your group walks too far from home, everyone can simply hop in the car and drive back.

If you have more than one child in your group of trick-of-treaters, give each one a unique colored bracelet or glow stick. This will help you keep track of where each one is as you supervise them from your car. 6. Don’t eat candies with opened or torn wrappers. Immediately discard them into a trash can. Although the poisoned candy is an urban legend, it’s still best to throw away food items that might have been contaminated with all sorts of bacteria from the outside. 7. Instruct your children to always wait for all members of their group. Do not move on to the next house until everyone is present. This will teach them patience and solidarity. 8. If you have older kids walking with the group, ask them to be your managers. This way, they can keep an eye on the younger children in the group as they walk around, while you get a bird’s-eye view from your car or bicycle as you trail them.

Follow these safety tips so that the only nefarious thing you have to worry about this Halloween are ghosts, vampires and a tummy ache from all that candy.

Imaging Technology Makes a Difference in Fight Against Breast Cancer

T

By Stephen W. Phillips, M.D. of Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital

echnology can save your life.

That’s one of the most important messages women need to hear during October. Because today’s advanced imaging technology can make a significant difference in the early detection of breast cancer. At Houston Methodist Breast Care Center at Sugar Land, we’re using the latest and most effective imaging tools to catch breast cancer at its earliest stages, when treatment is most effective. One of those technologies is low-dose radiation tomosynthesis, also known as 3-D mammography, which has two major benefits – the ability to pinpoint tumors when they are undetectable in a dense breast on a traditional 2-D mammogram, and the lowest radiation exposure of any mammography machine on the market. Our Genius™ 3-D mammogram provides clearer pictures and a more accurate screening than conventional

machines. Our radiologists can pull images from varying perspectives to examine anything of concern on screening, which reduces the number of callbacks for more testing. In addition, our system requires no additional compression and takes just a few seconds longer than traditional 2-D mammogram. The low-dose tomosynthesis system is approved by the FDA as being clinically superior to conventional mammography. Another tool available at the breast care center is LumaGEM™ low-dose molecular breast imaging (MBI) – the first FDA-approved digital imaging system to provide clear images of lesions in dense breast tissue. Women with dense breast tissue are five times more likely to develop breast cancer, and clinical studies have shown that MBI detects three times as many cancers as traditional mammography, with the same level of radiation. The Houston Methodist Breast Care

Center at Sugar Land was the first in the greater Houston area to offer low-dose molecular breast imaging, primarily as a secondary diagnostic tool for women with suspicious findings or difficult-to-interpret mammograms. Today, most women are aware of the importance of monthly self-screening and annual clinical exams, along with annual mammograms after age 40. But many women aren’t aware that not all hospitals offer the same level of screening. Technology makes a difference, as can the skill and knowledge of the physicians and technologists working on your behalf. Your physician or breast radiologist can help you decide which level of screening is best. At Houston Methodist Breast Care Center at Sugar Land, we are dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. We offer all-digital mammography, molecular breast imaging, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, ultrasound biopsies, stereotactic biopsies and MRI-guided biopsies, all under one roof. If cancer is detected, the Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land provides access to clinical trials and the most advanced treatments available, such as chemotherapy, and hormone, drug and radiation therapy. Innovative surgical techniques and breast reconstruction surgeries are also available. To schedule a mammogram at Houston Methodist Breast Care Center at Sugar Land, visit houstonmethodist.org/ appointments or call 281.242.PINK (7465). For more information about important breast health exams, please contact Jamie Prinster, breast care center manager, at 281.275.0586.

The List Top 10 Things to do in October

1.

Well folks, it’s time to get the fall planting done and fresh herbs planted for the upcoming months. Head over to the garden shop and purchase new tomato plants, dill, basil, thyme, sage and cucumbers. While you’re there I also want…

with Auntie A

when hosting an afternoon tea with friends. Go to www.alisamurraystheartistspalate.com for the recipe. 7. Of course, read at least two good books, on my nightside table now…”Blowback” by Brad Thor and “The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo” by Amy Schumer.

2. You to purchase a few trees and plant those in your yard too…it’s a good time with things cooling off and prices are at the best of the year right now

8. Gather beautiful fresh flowers in the colors of fall and adorn your dinner table with an arrangement. Add Eucalyptus and berries for a real yummy showpiece for your family to enjoy.

3. In your kitchen…start a “starter” and soon you’ll be ready to bake breads for your neighbors and friends for holiday harvest giving. (see how to below)

9. Go get a mammogram and donate blood and get a flu shot! Lots to do but all must be done! :)

4. Decorate your doorstep with fall foliage and pumpkins and your hearth and staircase with seasonal lighting and garlands…add a few glittery pumpkins for some extra pizzazz!

10. Go by the homeless shelter and drop off the baskets you’ve been collecting of give away items in your home from fall cleaning. Ask the children to sign up to feed the homeless one day a month from now till end of the year.

5. Make a Monogram Wreath by taking a letter purchased for your local hobby store and gluing foliage to the frame.

How to Save Some Green this Fall Keep Your Home Warm and Leaf-Free

In Southeast Texas, the cool air and beautiful display of golden leaves is a welcomed sight after a long humid summer. However, it’s best to admire these natural gifts outside and not inside your home. As temperatures drop this season, it’s a good idea to weatherproof your lovely abode. Not only will you keep your house at a comfortable temperature, but it will also reduce heating costs. Another thing to consider is cleaning or fixing your gutters so that fallen leaves won’t clog it up. Additionally, if your branches are extending over your gutters, a sudden gust of wind can damage it, so be sure to trim get your protruding branches trimmed. 2. Enjoy the Season’s Bounty To cut costs on grocery costs this season, try shopping at the local farmers’ market to take advantage of the Fall harvest. Not only are the produce and artisan foods healthier than the processed stuff you find at grocery chains, you will also support local farms and independent businesses. 3. Exercise Outdoors Are you still paying membership fees for that crowded and increasingly-dirty gym? Hop off the treadmill and start jogging outside. In the summer, the Texas heat makes it seem like you’re running inside a gigantic oven. In the winter, the frigid air discourages you from even leaving the

By Michael Miraflores

warmth of your comforter. This season, the weather is just right. If you’re not bound to a gym membership contract, cancel it and enjoy the fresh Autumn air. There are a lot of city and state parks nearby where you can jog, ride your bicycle, walk your dog, hike and kayak. 4. Mark Fall Sales on Your Calendar Christmas is just around the corner and this is the best time to do early holiday shopping. Most products, such as clothes, are cheaper this time of the year because it’s not necessarily a giftgiving season like December or around Valentine’s Day. Also, many retailers offer Fall sales for shoppers, especially department stores. 5. Use your Fireplace Using your fireplace in this part of the country is kind of like using your sprinkler in Washington State: what’s the point? However, let’s not underestimate the erratic weather in the Houston area. Cold fronts can come swooping in out of nowhere as early as October. With this year’s unpredictable weather patterns, you can never count out cold weather in the forecast. To save money on electricity and heating costs, light up your fireplace instead of using the central A/C system. After all, your fireplace isn’t just for aesthetic purposes. Before you fire it up, make sure there aren’t any debris or bird nests in your chimney. Believe it or not, but the dry twigs from bird nests have caused major house fires before.

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

ahra Kamdar was skeptical of chiropractors until her 70 year old Dad was referred to one by his neurosurgeon. “Dad had major wear on his body,” says Zahra. “Last year we were traveling and he went numb and lost all feeling in one leg. A neurosurgeon said we could operate, but Dad likely wouldn’t survive the procedure. So he referred Dad to Dr. Steve Harris, the chiropractor at Sugar Land Health Center. Dad was dependent on others for driving and other self-functions, and as a result he was suffering emotionally. Dr. Harris said there were three findings on the MRI that only surgery could change but five findings that his treatment could improve. So Dr. Harris put together an aggressive plan of action for Dad, and it has made a world of difference. Dad is independent again. He can drive and walk. We continue to be completely satisfied with Dad’s results.” This past September, Zahra found herself in need of chiropractic care. “I was t-boned in the driver’s side by a car running a red light. My lawyer referred me to a chiropractor immediately. Things were moving fast, and I went to the chiropractor recommended by the lawyer. But after 19 treatments, I wasn’t getting any better. Keeping up with the Hip and the Hot for Halloween

t’s October and despite whatever you have been hearing about the economy; Americans are expected to spend over to $7 billion on Halloween decorations, candy and costumes this year. Almost a little mind boggling, however when our local decorating stores stock items 3-4 months in advance of each season and have sales weekly it can be affordable. As an Artist, I have first hand experience in the “extravagance of halloween.” Since 2007 I have been creating what we call “Theatrical Spooktacular” fine art portraits for the season, with each family typically selecting their favorite character and the I spend some time putting together the wardrobe and make up planning for that client. Over the years I have done everything from princesses to a full body painted Poseidon God of the Sea. These are complex images but they are memorable and as childhood goes…they should be. Children will never forget that year that they got to select their most favorite character and watched themselves transform! It is part of the magic of being a child. Here you see several portraits that I have done in this genre and if you have not scheduled something similar I encourage you to do so. They are not only so fun to do but they are each one of a kind to the child and become a conversation piece in your home each time you receive a guest.

As a working mother, I know the idea of costuming littles can be daunting for the “big day.” Each year there always seems to be a character that stands out as the star thing to be, however there’s some tried and true easy solutions

to making their day a memorable one without breaking the bank on style or your pocket book. Here’s a few ideas to help you pull together something fabulous that your child will enjoy and won;t make you pull your hair out in the process! For the babies dress the little girls in phoofy tutu and call her a cup of cotton candy, for the boys add pieces of felt via double sided

by Auntie A

velcro and turn them into cows, lions,pickles,tigers..watermelons and strawberries can be done for the girls…add a little face paint and your all set! For the children… paint their face like a mime, add black pants and a black hat and gloves, tie a clear bag filled with small balloons all different colors and they are a bag full of jelly beans! The old ghost with a sheet and a few holes is a standby that all of us have probably done at least once but if your dye the sheet blue or orange and add styrofoam balls as eyes (go look up sesame street martians) it can be transformed into something extra special. For the teens and young adults, wearing a black dress, gloves and process crown instantly transform into Audrey Hepburn, a black suit as Men in Black and with some creative face pointing and black gloves and clothes they can readily become the 80’s band KISS! What’s trending in the world of Halloween is really as it was when we were kids…what do they want to be? Like in life they can be anything they want to…and the best of the season with so many options makes this time of the year a lot of creative fun!
