Community History Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom

J

uneteenth is a yearly celebration in Texas that commemorates the liberation of African American slaves after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln. Juneteenth also represents the triumph of freedom and unity—integral pillars of American values. Fort Bend County is one of the most diverse counties in the nation and Juneteenth is a reminder of why correcting injustices in our country’s history is an important part of creating a harmonious society moving forward. On September 22, 1862, President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, but it wasn’t until 1865 that the estimated 250,000 slaves in Texas were finally freed. There were many factors as to why it took so long for the Emancipation Proclamation to fully take effect.

For one, many plantation owners within the Confederate States of America rebelled against the orders of the federal government, and refused to free their slaves. Due to the rebellion, it took Union Army bullets and bayonets to enforce the new law in states where slavery was still in practice. Essentially, Union troops liberated slaves as they won battles against Confederate units similar to the way American forces rolled into the Buchenwald concentration camp as Nazis fled. This was possible due to Confiscation Act of 1861, which stated that the property of Confederate soldiers could legally be confiscated by federal troops. The property or contraband in this case included slaves owned by plantations within the Confederacy States. So as federal troops took over Confederate strongholds across the South, slaves would escape to Union camps and be freed.

So why weren’t the slaves in Texas liberated easily in the same way? Well, it’s due in part to the fact that Texas was not a battleground state, therefore plantation owners were not pressured to dismantle their slavery programs. At least that was the case until Union General Gordon Granger set foot on Galveston Island on June 18, 1865 with an estimated 2,000 troops. The next day, he formally announced the Emancipation Proclamation and the liberation of African American slaves finally took effect in the Lone Star State. Though Juneteenth is mainly celebrated in Texas, there has been a push by African American activists to make it a national holiday over the years. This summer, George Ranch Historical Park will be hosting the annual event on June 18th. The Juneteenth celebration is set to begin at 9 a.m. and will include a historic

5 Ways to Save on Utility Costs This Summer

he summer is approaching fast, which means folks will be cranking up the A/C and battling dry spots on your lawn. It’s just a fact of life in Texas. It isn’t so much the heat and humidity that irks residents—that’s something we’ve grown accustomed to in a Zen-like way—it’s the spike in utilities costs. We simply use a lot of electricity to power our A/C units. Likewise, homeowners tend to use larger volumes of water to maintain our lawns and plants despite voluntary watering schedules recommended by state officials. So we’ve laid out some money-saving tips to help you keep electricity and water bills at an affordable level. After all, why let those extra dollars evaporate under the Texas sun when you can spend it on a family road trip or add it to your pool savings fund?

1. Smarter Sprinkler Use: We love our lawns in Texas. Since Spring precedes Summer, we transition from a natural blossoming of trees, shrubs and grass to a danger zone when all of that greenery can quickly turn yellow. Some homeowners tend to overcompensate and water their lawns a bit longer than usual.

However, an abundance of water will not actually help your grass’s health. In fact, using your sprinkler too often and too much will not allow the soil to properly absorb all of that water. 2. Shut Vents and Doors in Unused Rooms: If you have an empty room in your house, such as a guest room, you can shut its air vents to reduce unnecessary A/C use. This will divert the cool air to rooms that are actually being used or larger areas of the house such as the living room. Another simple way to reduce heat in the home is to by closing the doors of those unused rooms. 3. Do Laundry More Efficiently: Believe it or not, but you can literally turn a knob and save over a hundred dollars. Using cold water for your loads can save you up to $150 per month. This is due to the fact that the majority of energy used by your washer is spent on heating the water alone. Unless the fabric you’re washing specifically needs hot or warm water, try setting the temperature to cold wash and leaving it there. 4. Invest in Window A/C Units: Most homes built in Texas post-1970s have a central air conditioning unit. If you live in a small

or mid-sized house, having a central A/C might not be needed, especially if you have rooms that are not being used. A/C units are very expensive at around $5,000 to $10,000. Repair and replacements are almost just as expensive. On top of that, central air conditioning systems account for 50-60% of your electric bill. As an alternative, try using window A/C units instead. Not only are window A/C units cheaper, but they use a lot less energy. 5. Optimize Your A/C Usage: If you insist on using your central air conditioning system, there are ways to cut electric costs in the summer. One way is to simply limit your usage. At night, temperatures drop and you won’t need to use your A/C continuously. It’s also recommended that you consult with a professional HVAC technician who can help you optimize your A/C system’s energy usage. They can also introduce new “smart” air conditioning technology. So keep your cool this summer without burning a hole in your wallet. If you have any energy saving tips, please share them with us on our Facebook https://www. facebook.com/SiennaList/.

Are you living with Parkinson’s disease or essential tremor?

movement disorder results from the alteration of communication between the brain, muscles and nerves. Parkinson’s disease affects more than one million Americans and is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s disease. Approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with the disease each year. Toby Yaltho, M.D., fellowship-trained movement disorders neurologist at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Neuroscience & Spine Center, can help patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease. “Although Parkinson’s disease produces typical symptoms, its diagnosis may be delayed because symptoms often develop slowly over many years,” said Yaltho. “The risk of Parkinson’s disease increases with age and is more common in people older than 65 years of age.” Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease vary

from person to person and can include tremor, or shaking, often in a hand, arm or leg; stiff muscles; slow movement; and difficulty with walking and balance. “The challenge for physicians is differentiating parkinsonian symptoms from other conditions, such as essential tremor, that can be similar,” said Yaltho.

FREE PARKINSON’S DISEASE AND ESSENTIAL TREMOR SEMINAR

In addition to Parkinson’s disease, Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Neuroscience & Spine Center provides diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of neurological issues, including Alzheimer’s and memory disorders, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), back and neck pain, brain and spinal tumors, epilepsy, migraines, headaches, multiple sclerosis (MS), peripheral neuropathy, muscle and nerve injuries, and stroke. “Disorders and diseases of the brain and spine require a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and an individual treatment plan for every patient,” said Yaltho.

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

Five Herniated Discs...No Surgery

D

by Amy Sharp

r. Rodney Bell, the choir director at Needville High School, has seen a chiropractor for most of his life. When he moved here several years ago, he started seeing Dr. Steve Harris at Sugar Land Health Center. It was chiropractic adjustment business as usual for Dr. Bell...until this summer. “I was noticing a rapid increase in lower back pain,” says Dr. Bell. “I just assumed it was because I had skipped a few adjustments. But Dr. Harris thought otherwise...something had changed and he ordered an MRI. The results were shocking...five herniated discs in my lower back. It quickly turned into the worst pain I had ever experienced in my life.” “The odds were certainly against me,” continues Dr. Bell. “Even Dr. Harris said it was one of the worst cases he had seen in 39 years of practice. But that is where I was lucky...I had Dr. Harris in my life. For many in that situation, the only recourse is drugs and back surgery. I wanted to avoid surgery. Dr. Harris told me he would give it all he had, but in exchange I had to stay really faithful to the treatment plan--a plan that included body alignments, electrical treatments, very strong decompression and laser treatments. I’ll be honest, the pain got worse before it got better...but Dr. Harris had prepared me for that. Each time you walk into Dr. Harris’ office you’re asked to mark your pain level on a scale of 0-10. On the worst day, I wrote down ‘SEVERE--14!’ But three days later, the pain started dropping rapidly. Now, I usually mark ½ or zero. It’s just remarkable!” As a choir director and teacher, Dr. Bell is very active... conducting music through use of his arms and playing the piano for hours each day. “As school starts back,” says Dr. Bell, “doctor’s orders are I can return to normal activity...and I’m a bit nervous about that. But my security blanket is knowing Dr. Harris is close by and I can go in if I need to!” “Dr. Harris is a very honest and ethical doctor,” continues Dr. Bell. “He truly wants you to be healthy. He shows you exactly what’s wrong, and explains how

he’s going to treat it and why. He’s knowledgeable in both his wealth of experience and education on the latest chiropractic treatments, techniques and technology. And his office staff is fabulous. They really care about you...each and every time I’m there they go out of their way to make sure I’m comfortable.” Dr. Harris says, “What I do is not only safe care, but holistic care. My commitment is to do everything I can to help you avoid surgery and drugs. In other words, I believe that the body has the power to heal, but that sometimes it just needs a little help to do so. I’m so happy I could do that for Rodney, and I would love to help you as well!”
