Calming the Back to School Jitters

By Lindsay Asawa, Ph.D.

A

fter a relaxing and fun-filled summer, many children find it scary and overwhelming to face a new school year. There are often many unknowns: New schools, different teachers, new classmates, changes in routines, and more challenging school work. For some children, these fears of the unknown are quickly alleviated in the first few weeks. Other children continue to struggle with anxiety and school avoidance well into the school year. Here are a few helpful tips to prepare your anxious child and calm their backto-school jitters:

Reduce the Unknowns

The more you can familiarize your child with the impending changes, the more you will reduce their fears of the unknown. If your child is attending a new school, be sure to drive by the school a few times, stop by the playground for a picnic, go inside to meet the office staff, and attend any summer events and orientations. Sign up for the school newsletter and check for updates on the website to learn about these events. Social media provides options to join groups specific to your child’s school (and even their grade level), creating more opportunities to connect with others and stay involved in back-to-school events. Look through the school website with your child to learn more about the mascot, facilities, teachers, and school events. When the teachers are assigned, it can be helpful to familiarize your child with their teacher as soon as possible. Find pictures of your child’s teacher on the school website, begin using their name in conversations about school, and attend the meet-the-teacher night.

Establish Routines Early

Transitioning from the summer routine to school year routine can be tough. Begin a few weeks before the school year begins. Gradually shift the bedtime routine and begin waking your child closer to the time they will be expected to start their school day. Practice following the morning routine and keep it consistent. Some children benefit from a visual schedule that can be posted in their bedroom or

bathroom. Explain to your child what their daily routine will be during the school year. Plan ahead by creating a calendar for the first few months, including your child’s extracurricular activities, school hours, and school events. Discuss the daily transportation routine to and from school and practice at least once before school starts (e.g., walking to and from the bus stop, driving through the drop off/pick up lane, riding bikes or walking to and from school).

Help Your Child Feel Prepared

Children who are anxious about the difficulty of school work may need a little reassurance. It can be helpful to look ahead with your child at the topics that will be covered this year. Review the grade-level TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) at http://tea.texas.gov or pick up lowcost grade level workbooks to flip through with your child. Discuss your August 2017

Continued ~ child’s academic accomplishments from the previous year and times when they were able to succeed despite the challenging work. Spend a few weeks briefly reviewing subjects that are difficult for your child before school begins (e.g., worksheets, workbooks, computer games, educational websites and apps). Sign up for tutoring before school begins to ensure that your child will have all the help they need. Finally, be sure that your child has the necessary space and supplies at home. Identify a dedicated “homework spot” in your home. Set it up with a lamp, school supplies, and headphones or a white noise machine.

Keep it Positive

Parents set the tone for their children in so many ways. Anxiety and stress in parents creates anxiety and stress in children. It is always important to manage and cope with your own feelings effectively and seek help if needed. However, these feelings are best kept away from your child as much as possible. Strive to instill confidence in your child and a sense that everything will be fine. Keep conversations about school as low-stress and positive as you can. Describe your excitement for them to start a new school year. Go shopping together to pick out school supplies, backpacks, and school clothes. Check out books from the library to read together about going back to school. Celebrate the start of the new school year with a family outing, get-together with friends, or back-to-school cake. As much as we all want to protect our children and hold on tightly, the best antidote for anxiety is a confident parent who gives their child a loving but firm nudge in the right direction. The Health Museum: New Ways To Learn About Ourselves

By Rosanna Vidal

F

f you’re looking for an enjoyable and educational way to spend an afternoon with the whole family, the Health Museum is a great option for you. Located in the museum district with its own parking and accessible to people of all ages, this museum has found a great way to intertwine fun and learning. As you enter the museum and pay for your tickets ($10; $8 for ages 3-12 and 65+), you may think this museum is on the smaller side, but there are a variety of activities, demonstrations, and exhibits to enjoy. One of the great things about them all is that they cater to all ages. Making way through the museum, the first exhibit encountered is the Humanae exhibit. As it is described, Humanae is a “work in progress”, but one that can give us a better understanding of race and skin color. Brazilian artist Angélica Dass grew up in a mixed-race family in Brazil, wanting to understand why people of different races were treated differently from one another. As an adult, this question led her to create Humanae. Her work is a compilation of photographs of people from 17 different countries and of different skin tones matched to a color Pantone palette. Dass wishes to change the way people view one another and tries to make us see our “oneness.” The Humanae exhibit is accompanied by a ten-minute TED Talk video (geared toward older children and adults) of her experience and the impact her work has made around the world. The largest exhibit in the Health Museum is The Amazing Body Gallery where both adults and children can learn and explore by completing the interactive puzzles, questions, and activities. An exciting feature is a twelve feet tall beating heart that clearly demonstrates how the human heart functions. Approximately every 20 minutes, the display demonstrates exactly what happens during a heart attack.

This gallery also boasts a 22-foot-long backbone as a ceiling piece with ribs descending all the way to the floor. As guests walk along this area they get the feeling of being inside a human cadaver. Guests can also walk through a human eyeball and through a human brain. A very popular demonstration that everyone seems to enjoy is a cadaver riding a bicycle. Guests can hop on the bike and see how our bones and muscles interact in order to move the bike. Another hands-on display is a human heart wheel with a biometric system in which guests can check how their heart rate functions while the body moves. There is also a calorie crank demonstrating how many calories you must burn, and how difficult it is to burn those calories, for specific foods you eat. Another interesting display visually exposes the different stages of gestation with doll representations for each stage. For adults and older kids, a fascinating and easy to follow display demonstrates what exactly our DNA is and how it works. The human genome (the specific DNA code to each living organism) is explained and how it is sequenced. This display explains what genomic science tells us about human disease and where humans fit into the natural world. Kids and adults ages 7+ can also experience the DeBakey Cell Lab ($5 extra) in which experiment station give further insight into cellular biology for future scientists. The stations and experiments are offered in both English and Spanish. So, if you have a budding scientist on your hands or just want to better understand how the human body functions, visit the Health Museum in Hermann Drive for a great experience.

Health Report

Relief From Pelvic Floor Disorders Through Physical Therapy f you suffer from a pelvic floor disorder, you’re no doubt familiar with the pain and discomfort that can accompany it, along with the feelings of embarrassment or isolation that many patients report.

struggling with these problems. Our pelvic health therapy program is extremely effective in treating both pain and incontinence, and some patients even see improvements after one session.”

You’re not alone. These disorders are more common than you think, and the good news is that pelvic floor therapy offered at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital can help manage and, in some cases, alleviate the symptoms of these debilitating conditions.

Macrowski says that pelvic floor disorders have increased in both women and men in recent years. The number of American women with at least one pelvic floor disorder is expected to increase to 43.8 million in 2050, up from 28.1 million in 2010, and the number of women with urinary incontinence is expected to increase by 55 percent.

Studies show that as many as one in four women suffer from a pelvic floor disorder. The most common problem is urinary incontinence, along with fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, sexual dysfunction and pelvic muscular issues. A well-designed pelvic health therapy program can reduce pain and give patients improved bladder control by identifying the problem muscles and increasing their strength and coordination through individualized exercise treatment. “A lot of patients are afraid to admit – even to their doctor – that they’re suffering from pain or incontinence, or they’re afraid they’ll need surgery,” said pelvic health specialist Sarah Macrowski, a board-certified physical therapist at Houston Methodist Sugar Land in the Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine building. “So they just live with their symptoms and find ways to manage them by using adult diapers or medication. Fortunately, we have a proven alternative for patients

8

at night. I also encourage patients to make lifestyle changes that can ease stress on the bladder, such as avoiding irritants like caffeine and spicy or acidic foods. We work with the patient to develop an easy and effective treatment plan so they can begin seeing improvement and feel like they’re taking control of their lives again.” To schedule an appointment with Macrowski, call 281.275.0450. Visit houstonmethodist.org/therapy-sl to learn more about therapy services offered at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.

Physical therapy treatments for pelvic floor disorders begin with an examination and review of the patient’s medical history, symptoms and how long they’ve been experiencing the problem. From there, Macrowski uses a variety of methods to train the patient to enhance their pelvic floor muscle function and coordinate these muscles with their abdominal muscles. Physical therapy typically involves one to two sessions a week for four to 12 weeks. “We want our patients to get the most out of their physical therapy, so we encourage them to take the lessons home and integrate these exercises in their day-to-day activities,” said Macrowski. “Pelvic floor exercises are great because you can do them while sitting at your desk, cooking in the kitchen or even lying in bed

pecial Education. I didn’t seek it out, but like most great things in my 30 years of life, I was strategically led there in 2011. Looking back, it all seems so obvious now, but at the time, I was blindly cruising through life, hoping to simply find a job that would supplement my self-centered life style. Turns out, God had bigger plans for me. I took a job in a prestigious learning center with the intent to “build my resume” as I pursued a Master’s Degree in School Counseling. While I was appalled at the $98 an hour this company charged families to receive their services, I was far more impressed at the lives they changed. Students would walk in the door at the beginning of summer with a hate for learning. After 100+ hours of intensive interventions, they left with a new light in their eyes, now able to decode and comprehend words and language like they had never experienced before. They were excited to return to school; a whole new world of opportunity had been opened for them.

Realizing my passion for helping struggling learners, I decided to change career paths. I began my teaching career in one of Chicago’s toughest west side neighborhoods. Talk about a culture shock. Here, my eyes were opened to the incredible discrepancies in our education system.

By Nicole Serle

I experienced children with such great potential being pushed through a broken system in which their individual learning needs were not being met. Children identified as “diverse learners” were overlooked and lost in a system ignorant to what learning diversely actually meant. Students were crippled by the system which made it nearly impossible for them to ever be independent in the classroom, ultimately closing door after door to any future outside of the situation to which they were born. It frustrated me even more to know there were so many great resources out there, yet none of my students would ever have access to these opportunities because of their economic situation. About a year and a half into my teaching journey, The Lellow Foundation was born. I woke up one morning with the realization that my purpose in life was not to cruise along in a job that facilitated a better life style for myself. It was my responsibility to use the blessings I was given, to help others. I knew I wouldn’t be as effective as I needed to be if I stayed in the school system. At 6:30a.m., as I rode the train to work, I called my mom to tell her I was going to start a non-profit organization. I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it yet, but the goal was to help children with exceptional learning needs living in underprivileged communities. I wanted to establish a way for these children to receive the services, support, and resources they needed to reach their highest learning potential. The next few months consisted of several Google searches (“how to start a non-profit”), a move to Texas, and many prayers. I held my first official fundraiser via GoFundMe, raising $2,000 in just three days, exactly enough to pay my attorney and get things officially rolling. This June, we received the long awaited letter from the IRS, recognizing The Lellow Foundation with federal tax-exempt status as a public charity under Section 501(c)(3). That’s fancy talk for “We can now officially collect money and begin changing lives!”

As we are just getting started, our initial goals are to begin raising funds for small term projects which will help provide resources, such as school supplies, for children in special education living in underserved communities. Long term, it is our goal to fund larger projects which would pay for the tuition of children to receive interventions through private institutions in the Houston area. The public school system is missing the bar, and The Lellow Foundation is dedicated to providing our exceptional learners with the support they need to reach their highest potential. For more information about our mission, visit our website at TheLellowFoundation.org. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date on our latest ventures, and find out how you can help. The Lellow Foundation is named after my Uncle Johnny, who had Down Syndrome. His favorite color was “lellow.” Johnny passed away three years ago at the age of 53. The Lellow Foundation is committed to honoring Johnny’s life by operating with the same joy that he exhibited, so effortlessly influencing the lives of all who were blessed to know him.

Are You Ready For The Holidays?

lthough summer is still here, the fact is that the Fall and Winter holidays can come at you fast. You don’t need to start buying decorations just yet, but you do want to start budgeting to get ready for the holidays. Starting early is the best way to guarantee you’re not left wondering how to pay for gifts and fill your house with Christmas cheer. If you’re not careful, you’ll quickly find yourself over your Christmas budget. Overspending can be as little as a few dollars to sometimes hundreds of dollars. When you total all your expenses up, it can be shocking how much you’ve spent! The best way to keep this from happening is by developing a Christmas plan. You can start budgeting early so you can start saving right now and be ready for all your expenses when the holidays arrive. First of all, estimate when you want to be done with your Christmas spending. Let’s say you want to be done with your Christmas shopping and decoration purchases by the last month of November. Once you have a timeframe in mind, think about everyone you want to buy presents for. Look up the cost of

By Jason Luthor

their gifts and start calculating all your Christmas gift expenses. After that, start looking up Christmas decorations. Since prices go up the closer you get to the holidays, think of this like a worst-case scenario. Take the most expensive prices on decorations and budget for those prices. Then, if you do end up buying earlier and saving on costs, you’ll end up with a little extra in your pocket to put toward your other purchases or back into your savings. Once you’ve got a total on how much you’ll be spending, it’s time to start making a weekly plan of how much you want to spend. You can make this easiest on yourself by taking your spending total and dividing it by the number of weeks between now and the week when you plan to do your shopping. That way, you know how much money to set aside from your income. This is an easy way of learning how much you’ll need to put aside. You might be tempted at times to put more or less money aside. Don’t! When you’re in a habit, it’s a lot easier to stick with your plan. The minute you start compromising or setting aside

less money, you’ll be tempted to start setting aside less every week. You want to stay in a weekly habit to guarantee that you have enough money by the time your spending week comes around. If you’re having trouble estimating how much you think you’ll need to spend, you can also look at old receipts to help guide you. You can also set milestones at the start of every month. Estimate how much money you want to have saved at the start of every month and compare your savings against your goals. By sticking to your planned budget and checking yourself week to week, you’ll have enough money to spend come Christmas time.

M

y Nana used to tell me that I would be lucky if I could count all my friends on one hand. That was true in middle school and college but as years have gone by and I have grown older, I have had and still have more friends than I can count on all my hands and toes! Friendships are an important part of our lives. Our life experiences and how we interpret and then relate them to our friends is an important part of having an enriched life. Friendships and the closeness that we feel to others happens to be a marker of happiness. Friendships all have their ups and downs and some even have their seasons. We all have people who we hung out with in high school and have not seen in 30 years and as life has flown by… neither were less from not having had the company of the other! There are seasons when the people that we connect with the most are perhaps in the same stages of their lives and their companionship is more about relating than connection. The same unfortunately goes for marriages as well. That is why so many couples spend the first halves of their lives with the person they fell in love with and made children…only to find themselves divorcing and connecting on a deeper level with someone entirely different from their first loves in their golden years. People change and our needs change in what makes us

Friendship Booklets

By Alisa Murray

feel engaged and connected to those close to us. Recently I came across a “Friendship Booklet” and it made me think about my old seasoned friends that have known me since childhood and how their long past with me effects everything about how they see me in the world. It also made me think about how different the answers would be from my newer friends who only know the “Alisa Murray.” This booklet can be homemade or found in FLOW magazine and it asks many questions… some of which are: “A moment I’ll never forget” … “Our friendship is valuable to me because” …. “What I have learned from you is” … you get the point. For myself, I recommend you grab a bunch of really cool paper and in your own handwriting ask a few questions. The article I read recommended that you make a bunch in one booklet and just leave it lying around but I think it would be more likely to actually get finished and also act as a conversation piece between you and your friends if you added it to a gift that you were giving anyway from their birthday or the holidays. Ask them to return it to you either with your gift or as their gift to you the following year and that way it will get back to you finished! The booklet is an obvious exercise of reflection. The answers to the questions can be quite powerful and

enlightening! They may even have a lasting impact such as to encourage you to make changes in your life to be a better friend or remind you of how much your goodness has changed forever so many people’s lives! The old friends still carrying memories of what we once were will have a totally different perspective than the newer friends. Each set giving you a valuable and enlightening look at how those we cherish see us. If you wanted to take this exercise even deeper, I think it would be quite interesting to send a booklet of similar questions to friends that we have lost touch with and see if they even filled the questions in giving us some sort of understanding specifically why we are no longer in touch or close! In any case friends are a major part of living a happy life and sharing how any why they are so important to us is part of building a deeper connection. The Booklet allows for that to take place…I am making them for all my friends and I hope you consider doing it too! A happy life is not measured in how much money we have accumulated but in how many lives we have touched and been enriched by. Friends are necessary for a happy life!

The List

1.

Top 10 Things to do in August

Back to school days are here and after trying and testing routines to make the crazy scheduled days go smooth I have found that if you will cut up veggies and fruits, boil eggs and sort cheeses and crackers into separate zip lock baggies you can grab and go in between home to school and prepare a quick snack when you pick them up before dance and sports with an assortment of goodies that are healthy and won’t break your budget! 2. Pick a nice spot with morning sun and plant the seedlings you started last month as they are now ready to move to outside and should be producing in a few short weeks. I like to cut back all herbs now as well and really trim things up so they are forced to push through the end of summer early fall. 3. Sign up for a continuing education class. I am always learning and working

with Auntie A

on something and I find that it keeps me busy being productive and not watching TV! Masterclass, Skillshare are great if you are a self-starter and our local Community College always its offering something interesting. 4. On my night side now…. You are a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero and the latest issues of Bella Grace and Psychologies magazines. 5. Purchase season tickets to the Alley, Stages or the Houston Ballet. Both my children are so much more well-rounded having been given the opportunity to see theater regularly. 6. Make poblano peppers stuffed with basmati rice and shrimp! It’s a favorite poolside and an easy make ahead on those first days of school when everyone still longs to be home and not running around!

8. Books and more books! Take a room and gut it and really organize everything. Currently I have removed all books from the children’s playroom and will sand, repaint and then only put back the books that we have decided to keep and take to our library to donate the rest. 9. Schedule a make-up class and learn how to contour your face or buy just one beauty magazine and see what’s trending in colors for the fall so you’ll be ‘in the know” come party and gala time in a month or so! 10. Watch me on Fridays on KPRC2 mid-day and I will tell you what to do with the children in the city! Each week there’s something new and sometimes free!
