By Jason Luthor

eeling like you have the luck of the Irish? Wondering what to do now that Spring is right around the corner? On March 17th, people all over the world will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. This festive celebration began as a tribute to St. Patrick, a 5th-century bishop in Ireland.

Day has spread all around the world. Many western, nations such as Ireland, the U.S., and Great Britain, remember St. Paddy in different ways. Although St. Patrick’s Day isn’t a legal holiday in the United States, it’s considered a celebration of Irish culture, and people from throughout the country join in on the festivities in different ways.

Church tradition states that he died on March 17th, and the Irish began commemorating this day as early as the ninth century. By the 1700s, parades in his honor were being held in North America, and it slowly became customary for people to wear green clothing and shamrocks on this day. The practice of celebrating St. Patrick’s

On March 17th, the county of Fort Bend will be no different. The city of Fulshear plans to celebrate St. Patrick’s with a downtown parade. Locals can expect the proceedings to begin at 3 P.M. and continue into the evening. Visitors can expect Irish dancers, face painting, bagpipers, and a ton of other activities that are fun for the whole family.

ost healthy adults will experience back or neck pain at some point in their lives. Whether you’re young or old, back and neck pain can be debilitating. And it’s no wonder, your neck and back work to give strength to your movements and hold up half of your weight day in and day out. The spine is a complex structure with more than 33 vertebrae that form the flexible column running from skull to tailbone; between each is a cushiony disc, and holding everything together is a web of ligaments and muscles. “With all of these different parts in the spine, there’s a lot that can go wrong,” said Dr. Karl Vega-Lelkes, a boardcertified orthopedic spine surgeon at the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Neuroscience & Spine Center. Prevention Is Key Back ailments can stem from a variety of sources, including heavy lifting, improper sports or exercise

Back & Neck Pain? Find Relief techniques, sitting hunched over a desk or being overweight. Conditions such as a herniated disc, muscle spasms, arthritis and scoliosis can also contribute to back pain. Depending on the source of your back problem, you may experience acute pain (lasting a few weeks) or chronic pain (lasting for months or years). “Since most people end up experiencing back pain, one of the best things we can recommend is prevention,” Vega-Lelkes said. Some of the steps you can take to prevent back and neck pain include: • Maintaining good posture • Strengthening muscles in your legs, back and abdomen • Lifting objects with your legs, not your back • Maintaining a healthy weight • Wearing supportive shoes

Treating The Pain If you’re experiencing mild back or neck pain, over-the-counter antiinflammatory drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen may help, along with applying an ice pack and alternating with a heating pad. Whether your pain is intense or a slight throbbing, it’s important to seek a treatment option that’s right for you. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Karl Vega-Lelkes, visit houstonmethodist.org/appointments for easy online schedule or call our Neuroscience & Spine Center at 281.274.7979. Back & Neck Pain Seminar Join us on Wednesday, April 19 at 6 p.m. at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Brazos Pavilion Conference Center. Whether you’ve had back and/or neck pain for a few days or several long years, we are here to help. Dr. Karl Vega-Lelkes will present the latest information on less invasive treatment options and address any questions you may have. Registration is required. alotherapy -- What is it and why does it matter?

Halos is the greek word for salt, and Halotherapy, better known as Salt Therapy, is the natural use of dry, aerosolized salt in a climate controlled environment -- a “salt room. Visitors inhale the salt aerosol, allowing the healing salt to reach deep into their lungs. This therapy naturally and safely treats many kinds of respiratory and skin conditions without drugs or invasive procedures. For thousands of years, people with serious and chronic respiratory and skin conditions have visited the Dead Sea to enjoy its healing properties. Even today, people travel there from all over the world to find relief. The salt mines of Eastern Europe have also been a hot spot for salt healing since the late 1800s. There, as in modern salt rooms, people still sit and breathe in the salty air for its many health benefits. Even in Ayurvedic practices, the mixture of salt and lime juice has long been known as a natural bronchodilator. Modern research shows that salt has antibacterial, anti-microbial and antiinflammatory properties. Because of these, people exposed to salt over an extended period of time have fewer instances of respiratory and skin distress. Respiratory and skin conditions treated with halotherapy

include but are not limited to seasonal allergies, COPD, asthma, psoriasis, and eczema.

As scientists and researchers have continued to learn more about the healing benefits of salt; they have determined that recreating the beneficial climate of Europe’s salt

mines could make Halotherapy available to more individuals throughout the world. With this realization, Halo chambers or salt rooms were born. When you visit a salt room, the temperature, humidity and air flow will all be controlled during your session to create an environment that mimics the conditions found in the salt mines. The pharmaceutical grade salt is ground using a halo generator and is then blown into the room in micro particles. The micro particles enter the body through the respiratory system and act as a natural, safe alternative to medication. A typical salt session lasts just 45 minutes. The number of sessions recommended for you may depend on the condition that you are hoping to treat. You may feel temporary relief after just one session, but research shows that a decrease in long-term respiratory and skin symptoms begins to appear after 10-20 sessions. Most visitors who complete a full course of 10-20 sessions find that they experience relief for a longer period and return to the salt room only as needed, or if symptoms flare up.

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

“I thought I would never be without pain again.”

ahra Kamdar was skeptical of chiropractors until her 70 year old Dad was referred to one by his neurosurgeon. “Dad had major wear on his body,” says Zahra. “Last year we were traveling and he went numb and lost all feeling in one leg. A neurosurgeon said we could operate, but Dad likely wouldn’t survive the procedure. So he referred Dad to Dr. Steve Harris, the chiropractor at Sugar Land Health Center. Dad was dependent on others for driving and other self-functions, and as a result he was suffering emotionally. Dr. Harris said there were three findings on the MRI that only surgery could change but five findings that his treatment could improve. So Dr. Harris put together an aggressive plan of action for Dad, and it has made a world of difference. Dad is independent again. He can drive and walk. We continue to be completely satisfied with Dad’s results.” This past September, Zahra found herself in need of chiropractic care. “I was t-boned in the driver’s side by a car running a red light. My lawyer referred me to a chiropractor immediately. Things were moving fast, and I went to the chiropractor recommended by the lawyer. But after 19 treatments, I wasn’t getting any better. Spring Break Saftey Tips

By Michael Miraflores

pring Break is a time for students to de-stress from all that schoolwork, and spend time with family and friends. Spring Break activities for the millennial student is different today than it was a decade or two ago. Who wants to go all the way to Cancun or South Padre when you can just chill at home Snapchatting or re-tweeting memes, right? But of course, most students still plan on taking a road trip or two. As parents, we think this is a good thing, because it reinforces healthy socialization and it gets the kids out of the house. However, the world can be unpredictable and chaotic despite our illusions of safety. Here are some Spring Break safety tips to consider before heading out the door.

1. Know Your Destination

Always let a trusted friend, colleague or family member know where you plan to go over Spring Break. If you’re planning to fly out to Puerto Rico for some sun, fun and sightseeing, it’s recommended you give a parent a copy of your itinerary and flight information. Additionally, make sure you save the address and phone number of the United States Embassy in your host country. Don’t forget to give this information to your family and friends back home before you leave.

2. Late Night Awareness

Whether you’re a high schooler or a college student, it’s easy to lose track of time when you’re out having fun with friends. If you find yourself out late at night, it’s important to know some precautionary measures. For instance, do not accept rides from strangers.

That’s common sense, correct? Yet we see young people do exactly that when they’re exhausted, far from home, and are desperate for a ride. If you do not drive, download the Uber app (there is currently no Lyft in the Houston area). When you’re walking home—let’s say on the sidewalk—and a car begins to slowly follow you, run to the nearest house with a porch light on or place of business, and call the police. Many missing persons cases in Texas have an eerie common denominator: the victims were stalked by a vehicle before their disappearance.

3. Study Your Car

A lot of people do not know anything about their cars except to drive it, fill it up with gas, and maybe put air in the tires every now and then. This is not enough when you’re planning a road trip with friends. Check the tires for air pressure and baldness before you hit the road, Discount Tire will assist you in evaluating your vehicles tires for free. Study the manual that came with your car and familiarize yourself

with the basic engine layout. You’ll be surprised at the number of people who do not know where their battery is located, especially in the case of newer Mercedes-Benz models. So if you ever have car issues on the road, you’ll know how to find a solution quickly.

4. Risk Assessment

This is somewhat related to #1 on this list. If you’re traveling overseas for Spring Break, gather current information about your destination. it’s a good idea to know if your destination recently had a violent event, such as shootings, kidnappings, terrorism and rape. If you’re going to a country that’s in the middle of a drug war, like the Philippines, or even a popular destination that experienced recent terrorist attacks, like Paris, it’s best to find a hotel nearest the U.S. Embassy. At the end of the day just be aware of your surroundings and know how to minimize your risks while traveling. Now get out there, have fun, and enjoy your spring break! March 2017

Money Mat ters Choosing the Right Accountant

N

owadays, a lot more people are using online tax filing programs like TurboTax. While this is fine for someone who is single, or have a simple single mode of income, it’s recommended that you seek a professional local accountant to prepare your income tax filing for you. With tax season upon us the question is: which accountant is right for you? The Fort Bend area is host to numerous certified public accountants. Choosing the right accountant will save you time, money and headaches.

1. Read

the

Reviews

The most simple, common sense way to filter out the bad accountants from the good ones is to read reviews on Google and Yelp. While some CPAs pay SEO (search engine optimization) strategists to write fake five-star reviews online, most reviews are genuine. Read the actual reviews and not just the star rating. Make a list of the highly-rated accountants in your area and forget the rest. Or get a referral from a colleague,

By Michael Miraflores

your attorney or your banker. In addition, ask your neighbors and friends for recommendations for accountants they have had positive experiences with.

2. Business Reputation

Verify that the accountants you choose as candidates are in good standing with the BBB (Better Business Bureau). Simply go to the Greater Houston section of the BBB website and type in the name of the business. Likewise, you can search for any Rip-off Reports that an accountant might have from past dissatisfied clients.

3. Specialties

Once you’ve made a list of accountants

who you think are reputable, send them an email and inquire about the types of clients they usually work with. Some accountants tend to specialize in business, such as restaurants and construction. If you do freelance work on the side, you might want to work with an accountant who is familiar with contractual work, such as those in the construction business.

4. Medical Reimbursement Plans

Believe it or not, but there are some CPAs who do not know about medical expense reimbursement plans. If you own a small business, make sure that the accountant you are vetting knows about these types of plans. If they are not too familiar with medical expense reimbursement plans, then they might not be aggressive enough in finding deductions that could save you money.

5. Reporting

and

Analysis

You want an accountant who has the resources and attentiveness to not only help you prepare your income tax forms, but to provide you with reports and analysis as well. This is especially true if you own a business. Use these tips to help you find a tax accountant, someone who believes in helping you minimize your taxes.

Pro Tips

Knock Spring Cleaning Out of the Park

By Casandra Ramos

Once you’ve completed the decluttering phase you can begin to clean. A good rule of thumb is to always start from the top to the bottom and to use a microfiber dusting rag. This means that light fixtures, ceiling fans, and blinds should always be cleaned first. As these are completed you will move onto dusting/polishing your furniture. As you clean, make sure to use the attachments on your vacuum to clean upholstered furniture, underneath couch cushions and pillows. Floors and baseboards should always be saved for last. The most efficient way to dust a room is to start at one corner of the room and make your way around without jumping from one corner to the other. You’ll find that your cleaning will be much more efficient and you will be less likely to skip areas by accident.

C

leaning your home will never be as magical as Disney movies portray it to be. It’s a time consuming chore that everyone hates to do. Now imagine you’ve decided to do an entire Spring Cleaning of your home. It’s a daunting task to undertake for sure but, if you consider the health benefits of a thorough Spring Cleaning it only logical that you get started as soon as possible. According to a study by the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI), removing allergens from the home can make you feel healthier especially at a time when allergies are so widespread. A thorough Spring Cleaning can be accomplished in a weekend or over the course of several days depending on your schedule. There are many ways to get started on a Spring Cleaning. Pinterest offers an abundance of checklist and hacks to make this as painless as possible. The easiest way to get started is to focus on the areas of your home that are most frequently

used – Kitchens, Living Rooms, Bedrooms and Bathrooms. Focusing on the areas most used will give you the motivation to keep going. The next step will be to declutter. You’ll actually notice a huge improvement just by decluttering your home. The less clutter you have the easier it will be to clean the surfaces of your home. During this phase you will need to get rid of items in your home that you no longer use. Make a rule – for example, take an empty box and if you come across something that you haven’t used in X amount of months or years and it still works, put it in the box and set it aside to donate once you are finished cleaning. The key here will be that you have to take the items right away or risk the chance of just keeping a box of donations in your garage until next year. Something else to note, magazines that are more than a month old should be recycled and items that you come across that do not belong in that particular room should be put back where they belong.

If Spring Cleaning sounds like a great idea but you don’t have the time to dedicate hours and hours to cleaning your home then next best thing would be to hire a professional cleaning service to do it for you. Mahoney’s House Cleaning can provide you with the Spring Cleaning of your dreams! They will get the job done in half the time it would have taken you and saved you from the stress of having to do it all on your own. Mahoney’s owner, Imelda Mahoney, has been working in Sienna since 1996. After growing her client base throughout the years as an independent housekeeper she took the leap and decided to create Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services in 2007. She and her daughter Casandra Ramos work closely with their teams and promise to work thoroughly to guarantee that your home is in tip top shape for 2017.
