MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR By Sue Dunigan The awards were revealed at the February HOA. meeting. Every year the president of the HOA has the honor of picking the recipients and introducing them to our community. It is no surprise to those who are involved in our community and who know Charlene and Ron Ruotolo to learn they were chosen this year for this award. Their warmth of heart and friendly caring ways are refreshing. You will learn from the Q&A interview below they have been coming to Del Tura Country Club since the very first year it was opened and have been living here full time for the past eight years. 1. When and where were you born and raised? Ron: Hamilton Beach, NY in 1942 Charlene: New Hyde Park, NY in 1948 2. Education and Degrees? Ron: Completed bachelor’s of electrical engineering from University of Dayton. Graduated in 1965. Charlene: Completed high school
where I met Ron. After having children, I was a stay at home mom.
4. What would you like to share about your Marriage and Family? We married in 1975 on Long Island. We have 2 girls, Diana born in 1979 and Michelle born in 1984. Diana has 2 children, Kyle 4-1/2 years old and Courtney 2-1/2 years old. Michelle has 3 children, a girl Rylan who is 3-1/2 years old and twins who are 2-1/2 years old, a boy, Brexton, and a girl, Tesslyn. Both families are currently living in IL. 5. How and when did you discovered Del Tura Country Club? We purchased a new Palm Harbor home in 2007 and moved in full time in 2009.
Ron’s parents were one of the first seven people to move into Del Tura in 1982. We would come down and visit and told them “we would never move to Florida.” As we got older we decided we liked the warmer weather and decided to make this our home. We are so happy to be a part of the Del Tura Community. 6. What do you do as a volunteer here in Del Tura? Ron and I chair the Thanksgiving/Christmas basket program. Back in 2011 I got a call from the person who had been the chair for over thirty years. She was leaving the community and asked if we would take it on. We love taking on new
Couple Of The Year Award 2017 Ron And Charlene Ruotolo things so we said, “yes”. From the time we started chairing this committee we have truly enjoyed doing it. We started donating to twenty families and are now up to seventy families. Each year it seems to get better and better due to community support. Because these families are usually large, it means about 350 presents must be purchased. We shop for the gifts all year long to ensure every family member receives a small gift. 7. What makes you want to spend so much time and effort serving our community? It is truly rewarding knowing we are helping so many unfortunate people. This committee requires the help of many community residents.
Couple Of The Yea r Award 2017
3. Your Career? Ron: Worked for Grumman/ Northrop Grumman for 42 years. He started as engineer in 1965 and retired in 2006 as Director of Army programs. Charlene: Worked as secretary for Grumman. This is
Ron And Charlene Ruotolo
Without the community’s volunteers this committee would not be able to continue. We are always looking for new and additional volunteers. Just give us a call and we can tell you all about it. 8. Do you have activities here in Del Tura that you enjoy doing---outside of the areas that you volunteer in? Other hobbies and things of interest that you enjoy? Ron and I have a motorhome. As a matter of fact, we just purchased a new one. We will be traveling to the East Coast for a few months. We enjoying seeing the US and have seen so much and hope to see the rest of the states over the next few years. Ron plays golf when we are in Del Tura. I enjoy playing bingo and attending the different shows and all the great entertainment that we have here in Del Tura Country Club. So many wonderful people to be with and a great variety of things to be a part of. Like all volunteers, Ron and Charlene’s lives are enriched by the time they invest in their areas of interest and the more involved they are, the happier they become. We congratulate them as THE COUPLE OF THE YEAR and look forward to telling them the next time we meet, “thank you for all you do to help make Del Tura such a grand place to live!”

From the President’s Desk such as FISH, I can’t help but be incredibly grateful to all the folks who run these events. Think of the long hours they put in to make everything special for us. And, they do it because they care and love our community. Del Tura really is a special place! But, as with any community this size, we’re not without our challenges. With 1,300 plus homes to watch over, we forget sometimes what a daunting task it is to take care of everything and keep everyone safe. A wise person once said, “Your nosey neighbor is your best friend”. In recent weeks we’ve had several breakins at homes in our community. Most of these fall into the “snatch and grab” category where wallets and jewelry are taken. As our busy season begins to wind down, let’s all remain vigilant. Be that nosey neighbor! If you see something suspicious, notify the main office immediately. If they’re not available, call the main gate. If a
vehicle is involved, note the type of vehicle and get a license plate number if you can. Check out the physical appearance of the suspicious individuals. And always make sure to notify the main gate when you have visitors of any type, including contactors. Contractors who do not provide a name at the gate will be denied entrance. We all know no system is fool proof, but sending a message to “would be thieves”, will go a long way to perhaps creating some hesitation on their part. Finally, I am honored to be elected to serve as your President. I can only do it with your help. Many hands make light work! Get involved! Your participation will go a long way toward continuing our excellent programs and events AND keeping us safe. Until next time, it’s ... “Just another day in Paradise”,

As we head into what promises to be a very busy April, it caused me to pause the other day and think about how lucky we are here in Del Tura. You know, we often get caught up in our own problems and we forget to look at the bigger picture. Just think about all the things we are offered here on a regular basis... 60-plus clubs, 27 holes of golf, FIVE swimming pools, activities and events for folks of all interests. In February and March, we had social gatherings for people from all regions represented in our community. Also in February, we enjoyed the hilarious Suitehearts. We’ve had dances and shows and on April 1 our own Choralaires will present An American Celebration. It seems every time we turn around, there’s another event or “happening” just for us. Whether it’s “savin our strays” or simple service to others in need through organizations

Aging You know you are getting old when everything on your body either dries up or leaks. One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young. Being young is beautiful but being old is comfortable. Lord, keep your arm around my shoulder and your hand over my mouth...
Amen!

It seems that Sue had written to Margaret and nominated me. Sue wrote a wonderful letter about me. I was more then honored. I was presented with a handsome plaque naming me as a 2017 RSVP Outstanding Volunteer. Thank you many times over Sue Symes. I will try to live up to your opinion of me. We are planning a couple of events for the residents of Del Tura. First we are planning our annual Flu Clinic in October. There will be more information to follow in future The Tower. February 2018 FISH once again will be hosting a luncheon for our residents that are 90 or older. So I would appreciate if everyone would either call me (239-322-9863) or email me (ginnie1131@comcast.net) and submit the names of people who are ninety or more or will have their 90th birthday in 2018.

By Ginnie Benjamins This month’s news is difficult for me to write because it is about me. On Friday, March 3, about three-dozen Del Tura FISH Volunteers attended a luncheon at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre for volunteers in Lee County. We learned that each hour we volunteer is equivalent to a value of service worth $23.56 per hour. After being entertained by the fabulous Calendar Girls Margaret Baugher, who is the director of Lee County Retired Senior Volunteer Program, asked those volunteers who have worked 400 or more hours in the past year to stand. Del Tura’s 400 Club Members are Betty Scheetz, Rich Symes, and me. From that point on the awards were presented. The first of two Outstanding Volunteers was ME! I was stunned! As I made my way to the front of the room Sue Symes went with me.

Women Must Act to Overcome Financial Challenges International Women’s Day, observed on March 8, celebrates the social, cultural and political achievements of women. Yet, women continue to face many challenges. For one thing, women still encounter gender-specific obstacles to their important financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement. If you’re a woman, what can you do to get past these barriers? First of all, you need to recognize them. Here are a few to consider: • Longer life spans – A 65-year-old woman is expected to live, on average, another 20.5 years, compared to 17.9 years for a 65-year-old man, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. That’s another 2½ years of life – and 2½ years more of expenses. • Lower incomes – Women working full time in the United States typically are paid 80% of what men earn, according to Census Bureau data. • More time away from the workforce – Men work an average of 38 years, compared to just 29 for women, according to the Pew Re search Center and the Social Security Administration. The gap is largely due to women taking time off to care for young children and elderly parents. Women who work substantially fewer years than men will miss out on hundreds of thousands of dollars in earnings and many years of contributions to 401(k)s or other retirement plans. These statistics certainly are sobering – but they don’t mean you are powerless to improve your financial security. In fact, you can do quite a lot, including the following: • Boost your retirement plan contributions – Put in as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan, and increase your contributions whenever you get a raise. And even if you have a 401(k), you may still be eligible to contribute to an IRA. • Invest for growth – Some studies have shown that women may invest less aggressively than men. If you invest mostly in conservative vehicles, you may run the risk of falling short of your financial goals. To achieve these goals, you’ll need a reasonable amount of growth potential in your portfolio. • Extend your working life – If you like your job, you may want to consider sticking with it a couple of years past when you initially thought you’d retire. You’ll be able to add to your retirement accounts, and the extra years of work may help you increase your Social Security benefits. These payments are based on an average of your highest 35 years of earnings, so if you have a zero in some of these years, it will pull the average down. Consequently, your extra years of work may help erase those zeros. But even if you have a long, unbroken work record, your extended career can help you in regard to Social Security, because the extra money may mean you can afford to delay collecting benefits – and the longer you wait past 62, the bigger your checks will be – at least until you turn 70, when they “max out.” You’ll help yourself by becoming familiar with the special issues women face in meeting their long-term goals. As you know, women have met challenges successfully for a long time. After all, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did – except backwards, and in heels. . By Red and Nina Hansen Excellent food, great conversation and lots of fun marked New England Day 2017 on Sunday, February 26. The evening began with a fantastic potluck dinner. Everyone outdid themselves and provided all kinds of casseroles and ethnic and regional dishes, as well as scrumptious deserts. Jerry Leafer provided music in the background as new friends were made and commonalities were discovered. It was great to see so many first timers at the tables. After dinner the fun really began. A New England trivia con-
test proved both challenging and informative. Then we were off to the races! Finally, a New England themed raffle ended the evening. When the time came to move on the consensus was that the evening was a big success! While Massachusetts clearly held title to the most in attendance, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island boasted a share of the crowd. There was even one lone attendee from Maine! But where, oh where, were the Vermonters? Hopefully next year they will join us!
None of this would have been possible without the outstanding help of some wonderful people. A big thank you goes to Ray and Dianne Roderick, Mickey Bulger, Tom Hannan, Bruce Raymond, Gloria Titone, Fred Albert, Peg Terassi, and Sharon Carlson. Without their hard work, dedication, and senses of humor, none of this would have been possible. If you were not able to attend this year, mark your calendars for next year. We will be in the Starlight Ballroom on February 25, 2018, for another great time! See you all then!

This particular book details the experience of one of those brave men and covers everything from his boot camp experiences to his work on the front lines in such locations as Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. Throughout the war, the Code Talkers used their native language to send reports back and forth to assist our troops with such things as troop positioning and artillery fire. They were involved in some of the deadliest and most brutal fighting of the war. For more than twenty years their work was intentionally kept secret and it has only been recently that the world has come to appreciate their contribution and bravery. The book is written in first person, as the author was actually a Code Talker. It is a quick easy read and once you start, you’ll want to stay with it through the end. If you are a student of World War II and the Pacific Theatre, I think you’ll find this a thoroughly enjoyable novel. My original copy has been placed in our Del Tura library for your reading pleasure.
Editors Note: The Tower welcomes reviews from our readers of books they have read. You can email them to moredor1034@aol.com or drop them off at the HOA office. You must supply your name upon submission but request that your name not be published.

Review by Dave Adams Several years ago, as a member of the faculty at Gloucester High School in Massachusetts, I had the privilege to attend an excellent presentation put on by our history department. The primary speaker was a member of the Navajo tribe and he had been part of a very secret and special group of heroes from the Second World War, the Code Talkers. It wasn’t until many years after the war ‘s conclusion that their important work was made known to the American public. Using a language unique to their tribe, these brave soldiers fought on the front lines during the Pacific Campaign and spoke in a language the Japanese were simply unable to understand. As a result, American Marines were able to communicate effectively, without the enemy ever understanding what was actually being
said. I became fascinated by their story. In 2005, my wife Nancy had the good fortune to meet Native American author Joseph Bruchac at a seminar about reading. He had written a novel about the hard work and dedication of this special group of Americans. Knowing of my interest in World War II history she presented me with an autographed copy of Code Talker. The book, while featuring very accurate references and details, is a fictitious account of a member of the Navajo tribe who is sent away at a very young age to be “Americanized”. Mr. Bruchac touches on the dramatic changes all young students encountered, including the cutting of their hair and the requirement to speak only English as they were expected to totally abandon their language and culture. Yet despite these sad and often traumatic changes to their lives, when the United States entered the Second World War, they willingly answered the call. Very early on, government officials realized these men had a very special talent and the Code Talkers were born.

By Dianne J. Roderick Have you ever thought about how birth order can have a profound effect on your life? Many years ago I picked up a book at a tiny bookstore in Hyannis, MA. The title of it is, The Birth Order Book written by Dr. Kevin Leman. I found it to be very interesting and invaluable to me throughout my teaching career. It not only allowed me to think about how position in the family had a lot to do with the person that I had become but was also extremely helpful in understanding my students. It’s an interesting study and one that I revisit often. This book still sits on my bookshelf today. Everyone’s family situation is different. Whether you’re an only child, oldest, middle, or youngest child you can rest assure it has something to do with the way you are today. Today I would like to touch upon my position as the middle child and only girl, sandwiched in between an older broth-

er and a younger brother. I’m sure that many of you will relate to my sometimes humorous, sometimes exasperating story. So crazy! So many stories to share… Let’s start with life with an older brother, a first born approximately five years before his sweet sister would be born. (just kidding). My big brother didn’t fall into one specific first born category, he fell into many. He was sometimes compliant, sometimes assertive, very strong willed, caring, and extremely over protective. (Just a little side note: Mom didn’t expect to have a second or third child due to medical issues). I think back to the stories that the family would tell of him as a child and I’m truly convinced that they believed there would be only one. Surprise!! Those stories certainly painted a picture of an only child. Wanting his way and throwing tantrums in the 5&10, sulking and refusing to give in. A bit spoiled? I would say definitely! That toddler with his strong will would become a very loving, caring, and protective big brother, husband and father. That protectiveness trait carried him through his childhood into his adulthood. My big brother was going to be my protector from Day 1 there was never any doubt! My family would tell stories of how he would stand guard next to my crib or carriage and glare at people who just wanted a peek of his new baby sister. Mr. Protector was not going to let that happen! And that was just the beginning! So it began… I became his responsibility and it was perfect sibling love for about six years until this middle child developed her own personality and big brother became a teenager that wasn’t about to deal with a little sister anymore. He was too busy
with his friends and I must admit I was a bit hurt. Little did I realize then that he wasn’t abandoning me forever. That protective nature, although a bit smothering at times, would always be there. As much as I complained I can’t say enough how thankful for all the times he has been there for me throughout my life. I missed those crazy times when we would be watching the wrestling matches on TV. I loved Killer Kowalski! Oh how I would try to give my brother the famous “claw hold”. Of course the only time I would win was when he let me. Usually I had to save myself by giving in and yelling, UNCLE. It was nuts! Those were such great times. Oh yes, there were those not so great times, especially the period of time he just didn’t want me around. I guess as a middle child I was just a bit stubborn and never able to give up too easily. I can remember wanting to join in a game of baseball in our backyard. I kept on insisting and he just kept saying, NO! Well needless to say he had no choice. My Dad was working in the garden and told him to let me play. He did, I swear I saw steam coming out of my brother’s ears! I was determined to hit that ball over the fence into the field across the street. Never got that far…he pitched and I never saw it coming. Got it square between the eyes! The only thing I remember is waking up on the couch with a giant icepack on my nose! The best part though, he thought he had killed me. Boy did I let him squirm! I didn’t moan or open my eyes for another ten minutes. Love you, Brother! It was right about that time when a new unexpected bundle of joy entered our lives, the youngest child ...

1. Flexible Vacuum: To get something out of a heat/air register or under the fridge, add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vaccum. It can be bent ot flattened to get into narrow openings. 2. Measuring Cups: Before you pour sticky substance into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the water but don’t dry the cup. add your ingredient (like peanut butter) and watch how easily it comes right out. 3. Foggy Windshield: Buy a chalk eraser and keep it in the glove compartment of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser...works better than a cloth! 4. Reopening Envelope: If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place the envelope in the freezer for an hour or two... it will unseal easily. 5. Goodbye Fruit Flies: Take a small glass and fill it with 1/2 with Apple cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid, mix well. Flies are drawn to the cup then gone. 6. Get Rid of Ants: Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it home, can’t digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or two especially if it rains, but it is safe for pets and small children. 7. Dust removal from Silk flowers: Use your hair dryer to blow off the dust. 8. Dusting Lampshades: Use a soft dry paintbrush. 9. Cleaning small areas: Use a toothbrush to get around small areas of the kitchen sink, faucet handles, between tub and wall, light switches etc. 10. Dusting Blinds: Use a foam paintbrush. 11. Odor Busters: Place cotton balls saturated with lemon or vanilla extract hidden out of sight.easier to untangle.

Mister Fix-It By Jim Stenzel I’m sure you know that your water heater will not last forever. End of life for a water heater might be signaled simply by a reduction of available hot water, or no hot water at all. This is most often caused by failure of one or both of the electric heating elements, or the thermostatic controls. However, a far more likely and damaging scenario is that your water heater will develop a leak. Usually the leak starts out fairly slow, and gets worse with time. In our former Northern homes, water heaters were almost universally located in basements, where a leak would cause little damage, and was unlikely to go unnoticed for any appreciable length of time. Unfortunately, in our manufactured homes, the water heater is typically located in a water heater closet, either with an access door on the outside of the house, or with an access door inside the
CELEBRATING
home, perhaps in a closet or in a hallway or utility room. Note that in all of these cases, your water heater is out of sight and out of mind! According to modern plumbing codes, all water heaters are required to be placed in a “pan”. This pan might take the form of a large pie pan, with a larger diameter than the water heater. Alternatively, the closet the water heater is in might have a rubber membrane on the floor and perhaps six inches up the walls. In either case, the “pan” will have a drain connected that will direct any leakage from the water heater safely below the floor through a drain pipe, to the ground underneath your home. Unfortu-
nately, many manufactured home builders do not always assure that their products conform to best
practice plumbing / electrical / or construction codes. In the absence of a drainage pan, a leaking water heater will damage the subfloor under the water heater, and in many cases, an expanding area maybe many feet from the water heater. Such leakage will destroy carpeting and laminate flooring. If the situation goes on long enough, a huge area can stay wet and create severe mold problems that you may never be able to eliminate. It’s really a good idea to drain/flush your water heater periodically (yearly). This process will help purge the tank of mineral deposits that collect on the bottom of
the tank and hasten deterioration of the tank. In my view however, a more important reason to flush your water heater is that in the process you will have to LOOK at the water heater, and in so doing, you will easily be able to detect any leakage problems that have developed since you last looked at the tank. But even if you don’t want to perform the flushing procedure, at least open up the water heater closet a couple times a year to be sure all is well in water heater land. Many folks here have arranged to have their water heaters moved from a space inside the house walls, to their garage, where any leakage issues will be quickly noticed, and easily repaired. This totally eliminates the potential of damage to your house structure from a failing water heater. So, if your water heater is still lurking around somewhere inside your home, seek it out soon and say “HI”; don’t be strangers.

By Bart DeGraff When I let my imagination take me to visions of what old Florida must have been like I see sun and water, and fishing shacks, and boats unloading their latest catch, and long neck beers. I feel light breezes and hear guitars and banjo’s playing and voices singing with a southern drawl. In real life, all any of us need do to capture that vision is head west on Pine Island Road, cross the Matlacha bridge, then look to the right for the weathered pastel colors and boat docks of the Olde Fish House Marina. This canal side complex features both a fresh seafood market and a fresh seafood restaurant. The fish comes from local fisherman and varies by what is that days catch. The market selection, the menu and the prices change with what the fisherman unload on the docks alongside the restaurant. Don’t be surprised at the
prices as they are not “cheap”, but are market driven. If white linen tablecloths are required as part of your dining experience you’re best to skip this place. But, if old Florida atmosphere is your ticket you have just found home. Here you need to think picnic tables, paper towel rolls as napkins, plastic eating utensils, paper food baskets, plastic glasses of tropical drinks, and
Styrofoam cups of fresh lemonade . . . and the music. All of the seating is outdoors, most covered. There are waterside views of the canal and Pine Island Sound and the roadside with views of folks crossing the Matlacha bridge. As different as they are from each other both provide that Matlacha charm. Oh, and then there’s the music.
Although menu items change daily and may or may not be available when you visit, there are some staples and all are always fresh. There are appetizers, soups and sides, sandwiches, platters, and Florida desserts. Our most recent visit was for lunch and Po’ Boys; one blackened shrimp and one fried clams, were the ticket. The sandwiches are served on fresh hoagie rolls and are enough to satisfy any appetite. Topped with chopped fresh romaine, diced tomatoes, a hint of shaved onion and a homemade remoulade sauce (you’ll ask for more) they may differ a bit from the
New Orleans classic. They are no less worthy of a return trip. But that’s not all. The fresh slaw may be the menu headliner. Be sure to make this selection one of your sides. The French fries, too, are worthy of praise – garlicky, salty and with a bit of pepper. Perhaps the most popular side are the hush puppies. Cooked perfectly, both crunchy and chewy, they are best dipped in the honey from local providers. So, go west, cross the bridge, look for the weathered pastel painted buildings, bask in the sun and breezes, order a cool one and the freshest of seafood. This is how it should be. Oh, and then there’s the music.

Know Your Volunteer John Bilancio By John Brassem Doris Meyer asked me to interview John Bilancio for this month’s Know Your Volunteer column. I’m so glad she did. When I met John and talked with him for a spell, I was amazed at his – and his familie’s–life experiences. They seem to have followed the path of American cultural history and the current political discourse. See for yourself. John’s parents immigrated to the US from Foggia, Italy in 1925. After arriving in New York harbor, (within sight of the Statue of Liberty), they were processed, (‘vetted’ is the current lingo), through the Ellis Island labyrinth. Once the Bilancios passed that undoubtedly traumatic evaluation, they were put on a ferry for a short ride to Manhattan Island and, finally, America. Since they spoke no English, John’s Mom and Dad were joined in Manhattan by an Italian-speaking associate of the ‘Blackhand’ extortion gang, (very likely the precursor of the Mafia who seemed to have copied that shakedown model). You may recall the Oscar winning film, Godfather II, when Vito Coroleone, (played by Robert De Niro), arrives in New York and starts a family in the chaotic, lawless and frenetic Little Italy in the heart of New York City? With the assistance of the Blackhand ‘sponsor’, (let’s call him Vito), the Bilancios found a one room apartment in Little Italy. There was a ‘stipulation’ however, for Vito’s ‘assistance’. The family was obliged to pay Vito 25 cents a week for ‘protection’, in addition to rent. (See Godfather II.) In today’s dollars, that is $3.49 per week or $167.52 per year – a tidy sum in those days. (In 1925 America, average income was less than $800 annually). Thankfully, in 1928 the two Bilancios, headed west to Elkhart, Indiana by taking a train from Manhattan’s iconic Grand Central Station. In those days, communities were defined by a common for-
mer country, language, race or religion. John told me of his exploits in Elkhart’s Italian community with his young ‘gang’ of Italian pals. They often ‘found’ fresh bread that had ‘fallen off’ the back of the Hassuck’s Bakery delivery truck which they quickly ate or sold. John and his pals were also look-outs by watching for police raids on illegal gambling syndicates. They were each paid $5 for each job – a handsome amount in those days. With the outbreak of WWII, John tried to enlist in the Army – he was 14 at the time -- but was rejected. Finally, as a 16 year-old senior in high school, and with his mother’s written approval, he was officially accepted as a ‘buck’ private in the US Army. After basic training, he was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division as a machine gunner. He, and his regiment, was assigned to guard the sadistic former Nazi guards of the infamous Dachau Concentration Camp in Poland. The camps had only recently been liberated by the US Army. There is no need to relate the mind numbing sights that John witnessed. (Dear reader: Even this writer was taken aback when John described some of the sickening cruelties that the Nazis had performed on prisoners at that camp.) “The guards”, John goes on to say, “were happy to be alive and to have been captured by the Americans, especially since they fed POWs three meals a day”. Food was in short supply in those war-torn days. The guards also knew, of course, they would all be dead had the camp been captured by the Russians. Returning to the States after his Army discharge, John was soon married. The couple had five children and moved to South Bend, IN. He attended Indiana College and upon graduation, became a licensed embalmer. He subsequently went into business with two Partners. The partnership lasted twenty-five years. Sadly, John’s marriage ended in divorce. Fortunately, however,
John met June, a wonderful widow with five children of her own. They were married in 1989. So, dear reader, grab your calculator. Between them, June and John have ten children, twenty-seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Note: Thanksgiving Dinner must have been raucous affair at John and June’s house. After retiring and after 10 years of summer vacation on Ft. Myers Beach, John and June decided to stay in the Ft. Myers area. So, they rented a house in Del Tura and after a year or so, took the plunge and bought their current home. Sometimes bad things happen to good people. Sadly, June passed away in 2015. She was a warm woman with an electric personality who always smiled. The entire Del Tura community misses her. John continues his activities at a fast pace. He runs the “Sharethe-Wealth” on Tuesday morning coffee, helps out on Thursday Night Bingo, making coffee for the contestants and is involved in a number of other Del Tura activities. He sat on the HOA Board of Directors from 2001 to 2004 and was a longtime member of the now closed local VFW. I hope you say ‘hi’ to John when you see him. He is a great guy with an exhilarating history. Ask him to tell you about some of his experiences. You’ll like hearing about them as much as I did.

Jane Fonda Workout and Jane Fonda Body Sculpting By Teddy Reid Welcome back to our attendees coming back from their Northern homes and welcome to the new homeowners. I wanted to thank Maria Soper for taking over the responsibility for running these classes and playing the DVDs and CDs for me. Linda Sullivan who was taking over for me had a health issue and was unable to do it for a while. She has recovered fully and has started to come back for part of the exercises. Thanks to both and several others for chipping in to help also.
We continue to have Turazumba/Dance Fitness on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9:15 am to 10:00, and Jane Fonda Workout at 10:00 am until 10:45 on Mondays and Jane Fonda Body Sculpting at 10:00 am to 10:45 on Wednesday and Friday. My husband is more stable but I have had some health issues, so I am so grateful the classes are continuing in capable hands. Anyone out there who has shoulder, knee, or feet problems, please come and enjoy what exercise you can do standing up modifying the exercise to fit you or sitting in a chair.
You can still get your heart rate up and get great exercise moving arms and legs from a chair. I know because that is what I do from time to time. Come join me. I want to thank our Zumba teacher, Pam Finocchiaro, and Dance Fitness teacher, Adele Guthreau. They do a great job. When the teachers aren’t available, we can show videos of them. Here are some pictures of us celebrating Valentine’s Day and Linda looking very healthy. If you need to contact me, please call 239731-7251.
Friday Shuffleboard League
10/17
By Jack Blevons I am writing this on March 10 and our shuffleboard season is winding down fast with just one more week of playing. On the 24th, the 8-Team Tournament will be held and on the last Friday of the month is our 13th Annual Bust-Up Party. By the time you are reading this, all of that will be over and done for another great season of Friday Shuffleboard League. We’ve had great weather to play in this past season, without a single Friday being rained out. Now, I certainly hope I’m not jinxing
myself by saying this with just two weeks left to play. There are still a couple of tight races that will come down to the last week. That usually happens every year in both flights. After today’s games, the standing is as follows. The “A” Flight leaders remain, Glenn and Mary Kay Tointon, at 43/5, and at this point they have locked away the first place trophies for the second year in a row. In second place are Bob and Donna Crawford at 37/11 and Fred and Carolyn follow in third at 36/12. The “B” Flight leaders are Garnet Flem-
ing/Chris Brylski at 26/22. Second place is Lynne Sabel/Barb Jones at 24/24 and third place is the team of Chuck and Marcella Carothers at 22/26. I would like to mention that because of health issues, Chuck has not been able to play these past 4-weeks so Curt King has taken his place to finish off the season and they are doing very well. My next letter to The Tower will be in the May issue and I will give you the results of the 8-team Tournament and also the news on our Bust-Up Party. Have a good month of April and I will be back once more in the May issue.

Well-deserved awards for Del Tura and Paul Taggart: At the February Billy Casper Regional Management Meeting the following awards were announced: Of the six regions represented at the meeting Del Tura was awarded both Top Performance for the Year and Most Improved for the Year. And... Paul Taggart was named General Manager of the Year. Wow! Congratulations to Paul and his staff, both in the Pro Shop and those working on the courses. If you are new to Del Tura: We are always looking for new members. Our membership chairperson is Micki Sullivan. You can contact Micki at 567-2975 if you are interested in joining. She has all the information and can answer your questions. LEGA and Invitationals are posted in the Dungeon. These are golf events held outside of Del Tura. We organize car pools to the various courses. Lunch is always included. Prizes for LEGA are based on individual scores while Invitationals are team events. It is an enjoyable way to try another course and meet new people. The PGA is proposing a number of rule changes to speed up play. They feel that younger people are not interested in playing rounds of golf that take up to 5 1/2 hours or, when watching on TV, a player swinging and swing-
ing again (and again) before taking a shot. Younger people have other priorities. So, one proposed change would be that in hitting off the tee and going out of bounds, you would no longer walk back to the tee when discovering this but, just take a one stroke penalty and drop the ball in-bounds. (Like the men play North!). Another proposal involves hitting yourself or your equipment. In the 2003 Masters Jeff Maggert shot out of a bunker, hit the lip of the bunker and the ball came back and hit Jeff in the chest. He was assessed a two-shot penalty. Under the proposed rule changes it would not be a penalty. At Del Tura we also want to speed up play. Gold tees have been installed for those who feel the blue or white tees are more of a challenge then they want at a certain age. But what else would we like? How about balls that walk on water, no sand in the sand traps and a bigger hole when putting. If you have any other ideas please forward them to the PGA. I am sure they are dying to hear from us! We had a very busy season that is wrapping up this month. For those of you who leave soon, when not entertaining friends and family from the North, enjoy your last few weeks before you head back. There are lots of farewell events and many opportunities to play the course, whether in league play or just out to have a good time.

By Carol Marra Welcome to April, but first, a look back on February and March. In February many of our members played in the Valentine Tournament sponsored by the Association. Winners were: Flight 1-Wilma and Rick Antaya tied with Elaine Deraney and Ron Fluet. Flight 2: Marge and Mark Blackwell. After golf we had a barbecue in the Courtyard. Two days later the Pro Shop sponsored the Divorce Open. There were many winners and, hopefully, few divorces! Both tournaments were played on warm and sunny days. Fast-forward to April 1: A Farewell A B C D tournament, also sponsored by the Pro Shop, will take place. And, of course the Wednesday clinics continue as well as private lessons. We started March with our Member-Guest. thirty-six members and their guests played on a beautiful, sunny day. When we all finished we went to the Ballroom for a lunch prepared by Del Tura and prizes were awarded, gift baskets and 50-50 envelopes were distributed. The winners of the 3 flights are: 1) Kay Rolader and Renee Sampler 2) Linda Beiermann and Ruth Ann Gaither 3) Connie Ashcroft and Marilyn Natol. In addition, prizes were awarded for closest to the pin and closest to the line. Lots of fun, lots of prizes and a good time on the course. Thank you to Peggy Deems and her committee and

SPORTS Traveling Shuffleboard Team Update substitutes, we are a much better team. Because our league will be short one team next year, Del Tura is going to try fielding two teams to balance the program. If you enjoy shuffleboard and are willing to learn strategy to become even better, we would like to have you give this a chance. Even though we are a competitive league, we are also a league that first and foremost wants to have fun and meet new people from other parks. We play every Wednesday at 1:00 pm from early December through March. So if
you are interested, please call me at 920-309-1294. Our team this year was made up of: MaryKay Tointon, 19-6; Judy Lessard, 20-11; Janet Reinen, 18-10; Glenn Tointon, 19-12; Donna Crawford, 17-12; Bob Crawford, 16-14; Ed Dye, 1110; Leon Buss, 14-14; Marylou Buss, 12-14. Our subs are Caroline Brueggemann, Diana Camp, Glenn Camp, Marlene Eck and Len Fleming. Thanks for all your support. Next month we will let you know how we faired in the tournament.

By Glenn Tointon After losing one of our best players from last year’s team (Dave Denny moved) we thought this year would be somewhat of a rebuilding year. As it was, with one week to go in the regular season we are locked solidly in third place, our best finish ever! Not only that, we were in good shape to win the end of the year tournament at the Lee County courts on March 22. We will have the standings in the May issue of The Tower. Thanks to everyone stepping up this year, including our

Save Our Strays Obituary for Tommy
By Sherry Plisch This was “Tommy”, a big pumpkin-faced boy that I trapped and had neutered on November 6, 2016 on Catalina Drive. He was a very sweet cat who was fed by his Registered Caregiver, Dot Brown. He and Dot’s other feral, “Miss Kitty”, both went missing during the week of February 6. I’m sorry to announce that Tommy was found dead by a neighbor on February 12.
A possum was also found dead in the same area on Catalina Drive around the same time. Neither animal had any evidence of injury nor there was no blood near their bodies. That means that someone had POISONED both of these innocent animals, which is a CRIME! Miss Kitty is still missing. If anyone knows who is doing this, please contact me at 239567-0538 or contact Hometown America at the clubhouse.
Rest in Peace, Tommy

Good Timers’ Singles Club News By Joyce Lienert
“Many things that come into the world are not looked into. The individual says, ‘My crowd doesn’t run that way.’ I say, don’t run with crowds.” – Robert Henri
4/17
A meeting of the Good Timers’ Singles Club was last held on Tuesday, March 7 at 5:00 p.m. in the Poinciana room. Our officers were all in attendance: Loran Callen, President; Nancy Skorlinski, Vice President; Joyce Lienert/Deborah Alt, Alternate Secretary; Ann Clanton, Treasurer; Joan Whaley, Sunshine Club and Ann Boncore 50/50. Peg McTernan provided information presented at the Tues-
day morning coffee on March 7h. There were 171 residents in attendance. Thank you Peg! We celebrated the February birthday of Shirley Acker, February 11 at a luncheon at Anthony’s at Sabel Springs on Wednesday, February 15. Thank you to Esther Kunz for making those arrangements. All agreed that the event was very enjoyable. March birthdays were celebrated on Monday, March 20 at 4:30 p.m. at the Fountain Grille. Corned beef, chicken and fish were available at a buffet. Happy Birthday to Kathleen Quigley, March 1; Deborah Alt, March 2; Dolores Smith, March 20; Lyn Bailey, March 26; and Joyce Lienert, March 26. Upcoming events include a Scavenger Hunt/Birthday Cel-
ebration on Tuesday, April 11 and the Kentucky Derby party on Saturday, May 6. All residents of Del Tura are encouraged to attend the Home Owner’s Association (HOA) board meeting held the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Starlight Ballroom. New officers are Dave Adams, President; Michele Gallo, Secretary; and Wendy Wells, Treasurer. A meeting was held Wednesday, March 8. Cookies were served. Yearly HOA dues are $12.00 and provide many benefits, including delivery of The Tower, discounts on tickets for events and ability to vote in HOA elections. Dues can be paid at the Tuesday morning coffee. Also, the FMO (Federation of Manufactured Home Own-
ers) membership is $25.00 a year or $65 for 3 years. Bette Ewing-Cheney is our FMO representative. She is at the Tuesday morning coffee meeting or can be contacted at 652-3909. Ask Bette about the “2016-2017 TieDown Enhancement Program” and the “FMO Membership Contest”. Bette has a goal to increase FMO membership by personally contacting every homeowner in our community. We can all benefit by supporting her efforts. “Success is not so much achievement as achieving. Refuse to join the cautious crowd that plays not to lose; play to win.” – David J. Mahoney The Good Timers’ Singles extend a Happy Spring to all,
along with wishes for a happy and blessed Easter and Passover. Our next meeting will be at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4. Call Joyce Lienert at 973-714-4117 if you would like to join our group or need further information. And don’t forget about the Spaghetti Dinner, at 6:00 p.m. in the clubhouse, on Wednesday, April 5. This is a yearly special event. In addition, the entertainment committee is presenting “A Motown Revue” show on Saturday, April 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the Starlight Ballroom. “You can’t turn back the clock. But you can wind it up again.” – Bonnie Prudden

Remembering Old Time Phrases IRON CLAD CONTRACT This came about from the ironclad ships of the Civil War. It meant something so strong it could not be broken. RIFF RAFF The Mississippi River was the main way of traveling from north to south. Riverboats carried passengers and freight but they were expensive so most people used rafts. Everything had the right of way over rafts which were considered cheap. The steering oar on the rafts was called a “riff” and this transposed into riff-raff, meaning low class.
COBWEB The Old English word for “spider” was “cob”. SHIP STATEROOMS Traveling by steamboat was considered the height of comfort. Passenger cabins on the boats were not numbered. Instead they were named after states. To this day cabins on ships are called staterooms.
