MIDWEST
CHALLENGE! Our 50’s Party with our Midwest friends was a great success! Everyone had fun remembering the Good Old Days. The old games of jacks and checkers was won by the New England Club and card flipping and paddle ball were won by the Midwest Club. The winner was determined by a game of hangman which was won by the New England Club and gave New England the trophy. This trophy has been passed back and forth between the two clubs for about 15 years.
The music was so GREAT!!! It was provided by John’s Mobile Music and it got everyone up dancing to the wonderful tunes of the 50’s. A big “thanks” to our New England Club chefs Stew Franklin, Mike Renzulli, and Ron and Sue Proulx who provided an excellent meal of delicious homemade mac and cheese and great old-fashioned burgers. The big hit was the root beer floats and wonderful big banana splits. The people arriving were greeted by Evie and Paul Loud’s beautiful 50’s Chevy. A big thanks for sharing.
A heartfelt thanks to our New England Team for all of your help! We have a great Team! Thanks to Sue Lanum and the Midwest Club for all their support. The best 50’s dress prize was awarded to Linda Parise and Sharon Boehlke from Midwest and Ginny and Bob Loring from New England. Our biggest thanks goes to Judy Machnicz, our VP, who as always amazes us with her outstanding organizing ability. We love you, Judy! ~ Dawn Benjamin

MANAGER’S CORNER It is that time of year when some will be leaving Tara Woods for the summer. It would be absolutely wonderful if there were never problems or infractions, if everyone adhered to the letter of the Community Guidelines. The following are suggestions for closing your home: Make sure you have someone who will trim bushes and weed around the home. Don’t wait till you get a letter. 2. Electric Circuits – Turn off all circuits except air conditioners and refrigerators. If refrigerator is turned off, leave the door slightly open. 3. Water – Turn off at the main (under the house). 4. Toilets – Pour 1 cut of bleach and cover ceramic bowl with plastic wrap. 5. Television – Call Comcast and put on hold. 6. Newspaper – Stop newspaper. 7. Mail – Do a change of address to have mail forwarded 8. Notify office of an emergency contact. By all means have a safe and happy summer. We look forward to all returning in the fall.

FROM THE PRESIDENT will host the July 4th Picnic this year with the help of Bill Black at the grill. The events not spoken for are the decorating and undecorating of the Clubhouse for Christmas, the Christmas Golf Cart Parade, Refreshments and Caroling, and New Year’s Eve and Memorial Day. I’m hoping that a group of individuals will step up to fill in the events not taken, especially the Christmas events. These are really not very difficult to run and would be a good opportunity for new residents to offer their time and talents to the community. Please let me know if you might be able to fill in the gaps to keep our vibrant community running smoothly. You will be able to hear more about the needs and offerings of our many groups in Tara Woods at the Community Opportunity Fair to be held on Saturday, November 19th from 3:00 – 6:00 PM in the Clubhouse. I have received verification from a variety of groups that will be participating and am confident the Clubhouse will become a fairground of information provided in a fun and festive atmosphere. Please contact me if your group would like to participate. The Board could also use some extra hands at that time, so please let me know if you would be able to
help. The Board will be in need of a Treasurer after the Annual Meeting in January. Our current Treasurer, Paul Montelaro, will not seek re-election in 2017. This is a very important position on the Board and to the Community. It requires knowledge of Accounting, corporate finance management and computer accounting software. Paul has done a wonderful job as Treasurer and is willing to work with a candidate as soon as possible to make the transition easier. If you or someone you know is skilled in this area, please call Paul and he’ll be glad to talk with you. The next meeting of the Association will be in October. At this time, the Board will meet on an “as-needed” basis. Meeting notices will be posted on the bulletin board, as usual. Our Board members are all year-round residents, which allows us to meet on short notice and address issues as they arise. Have a wonderful and safe summer.

I think we can start to breathe a little easier and relax a little more as we head into May. As the weather heats up, we should move a little slower, too. Many of our sports and games will be taking a hiatus until October or November, but there are still lots of activities to keep you busy. Watch the Calendar in the Columns to see where and when the groups are meeting. May also brings the start of the Tara Woods Mixed Golf League, playing on Tuesday mornings at Del Tura. There should be information posted on the bulletin board in the Library if you are interested in a fun day of golf with this great group of men and women. I am pleased to report that the March meeting, with the Club presidents or representatives and others interested in hosting one of the major parties/events for next season, went very well. The New York/New Jersey Club will once again host the Labor Day Clambake. The Midwest Club will host the Halloween Party in October. The Christmas Party will be hosted by the New England Club. The Mid-Atlantic Club will host Valentine’s Day and The Dalys and Friends will host St. Patrick’s Day. Kathy Rafferty and Friends will host the Easter Dinner and the Board

TENNIS ASSOCIATION MEETING Our Tennis Association officers for next season were elected at our April 3rd meeting. Newly voted in were Dakota Windancer as President and Debbie Polenska as Secretary. Voted in to continue in their present positions were Frank Neveu as Vice-President and Carole Neveu as Treasurer. Nancy Schoeppner was thanked for serving as our President for the past three years. She has done an excellent job in her position as President. Kathy Rafferty was also thanked for her role as Secretary for the past six years. Being Secretary for the Association is not always easy, but Kathy did a good job taking notes all those years. It was decided that dues will continue to be just $1.00 for next season, as we don’t have a shortage of funds in our treasury at this time. The Homeowners Association Board of Directors is sponsoring an Opportunity Fair on November 19th.

(Continuing: Tennis News from page 7) This will be an excellent opportunity to let people know what tennis opportunities are available at Tara Woods. Phil & Arlene Franchini have volunteered to set up a table for this Opportunity Fair. Let Phil & Arlene know if you are available to help them with this project. I’ve been told that Frank Neveu, our Vice-President and Maintenance Man, has been busy this season. Frank has had help from Fred Puhlfuerst on a lot of these projects. In fact, over the past few months, I’ve noticed that Frank and Fred are on the courts a lot – and not just playing tennis. They’re busy fixing something on the courts. In fact, the last time I saw Fred, he had a needle and thread in his hands and he was fixing the net on Court 3. Here is a list of some of the things that Frank, and Fred, as representatives of the Tennis Association, have taken care of for all of the tennis players – whether or not you are a member of our Tennis Association: Repaired the score tree on Court 4 Fixed the net on Court 3 Put up a new net on Court 2 Installed new ball trays Put up two new windsocks Had the branches on a tree cut down so the overhead lights weren’t obstructed Asked for a new storage cabinet on Court 3 (yet to be replaced) On-going projects include: Replacing the broken tie-downs on the wind screens Cleaning the net with a mold remover once a month Brushing leaves and other debris from the court Picking up trash around the court (empty water bottles, empty ball cans, used paper drinking cups) Repairing the net if needed (or replacing the net with a new one) Ordering parts for tennis equipment, if needed Keeping the court as clean as possible Keeping in constant touch with Doug with requests to repair and/or replace equipment GREAT NEWS: The pickle-ball lines on Court 1 are gone! A huge THANK YOU goes out to Janet Daly for taking on this project. There were many complaints from the tennis players about the pickle-ball lines on Court 1, but Janet took it upon herself to get something done about it. So, as of Wednesday, March 30, the pickleball lines were removed -- and Court

What Can Golf Teach You About
Retirement Planning?
If you’re a golfer, you know the joys (and occasional frustrations) of the game. But you might not realize that some of the lessons you learn on the links can carry over to other areas of your life – such as retirement planning. So whether you’re already retired or are planning to retire in the next few years, consider the following suggestions: • Try to overcome the “yips.” When you miss those short puts – the ones you know you should be making – you might be in the grip of your old friend, the “yips.” As you know, it’s not always easy to shake this problem, but many golfers have benefited by working to improve their concentration, especially by adhering to a strict pre-shot and in-shot step-by-step routine. When investing for retirement, or managing their portfolios during retirement, many people can get the investment version of the yips – that is, they get nervous during market downturns, and then they make mistakes, such as selling quality investments when their price has dropped. (Remember the first rule of investing: Buy low and sell high.) To overcome this type of yips, the solution is the same as for golf: Maintain your focus and concentrate on making appropriate moves, such as building and maintaining a diversified portfolio that’s suitable for your needs, goals and risk tolerance. • Forget about that hole-in-one. It’s every golfer’s dream: a hole-in-one. When you tee up on that tempting par 3, and you’re feeling good, you might just want to go for it – but when you do, you could end up overshooting the green or plunking into the water. Many investors also try for a “hole-in-one,” in the form of pursuing that one “hot” stock that’s going to make them rich. However, by the time they hear about such a stock (if it even exists), it may have already cooled off – and, in any case, it might not be right for their needs. Instead of looking for that ultimate, one-time winner, look for solid investments that you’d be comfortable holding for the long term. • Study the course. The more you know about a course you’re going to play, the better off you will be. You can plan the approaches you’ll take on various holes and think about how to avoid the sand, water and rough. When planning for your retirement, or even when you’re living it, you also need a strategy, one that addresses questions such as these: How can I structure my investment mix to provide me with a long-term income stream? How much should I withdraw from my portfolio each year? When should I start taking Social Security? Am I doing all I can to control investment-related taxes? • Visualize. Consider these words from World Golf Hall of Famer Nick Faldo: “Visualization is the most powerful thing we have.” If you can visualize what you want to do on each hole you play, you are well on your way toward a successful round. The same idea holds true for retirement planning: If you can envision the type of retirement lifestyle you want, you’ll be more likely to achieve it by sticking with appropriate financial and investment strategies. So, there you have them – some ideas that play well on the golf course and in the retirement arena. Put them to work soon.

Who are Fred and Jan Puhlfuerst? They both grew up in New Jersey and met Freshman year at Montclair State. They have been together for 60 years, married for 56 years. Fred is an only child and Jan’s only brother died during Super Storm Sandy. They met on a blind date and went ice skating. Fred firmly and kindly held Jan, who was not a good skater, and taught her how to skate. His kindness and care impressed her from the beginning and we still see that exemplified in their relationship today. It is not surprising that Jan graduated Magna Cum Laude from Montclair State University,

majoring in English, Drama and Speech Pathology. Her natural abilities and talent are obvious, but, as you speak with her, you can readily see her love for her family, dedication to her faith and her goodness and concern for others Fred, too, is a very talented man, graduating with a degree in Industrial Arts Education. After marrying, Fred and Jan both taught at Wayne High School. Fred taught woodworking, metal work, graphic arts, photography, ceramics and auto mechanics (wish I had been in his class!!!). After school and in the summers, Fred worked as a Home Inspector and was a member and officer in ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors). Jan taught English and did speech therapy for nearly three years and then baby Ellen arrived. The family moved to Fair Haven, NJ where they lived for 33 years. After their second daughter
Alison started kindergarten, Jan returned to teaching. She was a Speech Pathologist and Special Education teacher in Rumson for 26 years. Fred continued his Industrial Arts Teaching career. One year, he was voted New Jersey Industrial Arts Teacher of the Year. For a time he became a State Supervisor for Industrial Arts. In 1967 the Puhlfuerst family moved to Saudi Arabia, where Fred taught for Saudi Aramco (the American oil companies, Exxon, Esso and Texaco). He instructed workers in the proper use of modern tools. During the 6 Day War, the family was evacuated and returned home to Fair Haven. The family was also involved in “Operation Friendship”, a student exchange program. Jan and Fred each served as group leaders (ten young people to a group). They traveled to Europe, where they stayed in

Jan was Editor of the Columns for three years and acted for several years with the Entertainers (remember her as Edith Bunker?) She also participated in Chorus, Inspirations, Water Aerobics and Yoga. Most impressively, during times of ill health, she pushes and pushes, which is not an easy thing to do. Fred and Jan daily show their concern for other people and continue to share their gifts and talents with us, their two daughters, five grandchildren and one precious great-granddaughter. They are both grateful for their family and the friends they have made here in Tara Woods. Thank you, Fred and Jan, for your goodness and all you do for us. You are both an inspiration. He was also President of the Monmouth County Industrial Arts Association, and served on the Fair Haven Town Council. During this time Jan continued her teaching as a Speech Pathologist in Rumson. One of her favorite anecdotes is about rescuing a neighbor’s dog – Bruce Springstein’s dog!! Wow!! Ask her the interesting story some day. In 2001 the Puhlfuersts purchased their Tara Woods home. Since that time, Fred has totally remodeled the home. He built a large addition to the back with a large bathroom, third bedroom and expanded storage shed. He became immediately involved with Appreciation Weekend, has chaired the Pancake Breakfast

MID-ATLANTIC NEWS new and very pleasant outing, and members reported that a good time was had by all. Linda Weibel was able to get some very nice pictures at this event and we appreciate her and Sylvia for their efforts. Our members are all participating in making plans for new activities for the Mid-Atlantic Club and we encourage more suggestions for the upcoming months. Submitted by Mary Donald, Secretary
It’s hard to believe the season has come to an end for the summer. I would like to wish all of you a great summer. I am sad that my time at Tara Woods has come to an end, but know Roger and I will be back to visit our friends. It has been a pleasure serving as your president for the year. You are a great Club and I know there are many great events to come for this Club. The Midwest Club culminated the season with a pool party on the Verandah Friday night, April 1st. We enjoyed a ham dinner with many wonderful side dishes while being entertained by steel drum island music by Island Sounds. At our business meeting, it was decided that we keep the Midwest guidelines. A committee was formed to review the guidelines and bring suggested updates to the Club members next fall. Committee members include Carol Heidmous, Dan Duda, Nancy Schoeppner and Janell Wissler.
Congratulations go out to Dave Boncher for winning the $350.00 gift certificate to the Holiday Inn on Sanibel Island. Our new president for the Midwest Club is Peggy Gamble. Thank you so much, Peggy, for taking the last 2 years of my term as president. Our new president will be filling you in on all the great things to come, so keep reading the Columns for future news. The MidAtlantic Club held their regular meeting on March 20th in the Clubhouse. There were over 30 members in attendance. We enjoyed a Wine and Hors D’oeuvres event as the Club furnished the wine and members brought Hors D’oeuvres to share. A Silent Auction that evening was a great success as members donated items for a Club Fundraiser. Members voted to celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day together. This will be at the Clubhouse at 4:00 PM. The Club will furnish hot dogs and hamburgers, and members are bringing side dishes. On April 3rd the Mid-Atlantic Club went to The Isles Yacht Club in Punta Gorda. Sylvia Stump made the arrangements for the Club to have a private room with 23 members attending. This was a

NEW YORK/NEW JERSEY CLUB
Another successful Lobster Fest! Thank you to everyone who helped make this much sought after event the highlight of our sea-
son. Members of both the New York/New Jersey and the New England Clubs worked very hard to make the food outstanding, and Bill and Mary Nothnagel and Aaron Homrighouse kept us on our toes with a rousing game of Family Feud. Thank you all for a great evening. At the March meeting of our Club, we voted on a new format
for our monthly meetings. Each meeting will be hosted by a different group of people. The schedule for 2016-17 is listed below. We’re hoping this group format will bring some new ideas and enthusiasm to the Club. Jon Gold has agreed to remain as Treasurer and Jan Puhlfuerst volunteered to provide the quizzes we have traditionally used at our meetings.
Just let her know your theme and she’ll do the searching on the internet to create a fun quiz. Thank you to Jon and Jan for volunteering for these positions and to everyone who volunteered to host a meeting. We’re all looking forward to another year of good food, fun and fellowship. Our next event will be the Labor Day Clambake on Septem-

POKER, ANYONE ?!
LADIES! DO YOU PLAY POKER? How long has it been since you’ve played with friends? Did you know there’s a game every Monday night at the Clubhouse just for the ladies? Well, we really don’t have a “No Boys Allowed!!!” rule, but men usually don’t like to play with wild cards and we do. But they’re welcome to play as long as they are willing to “play like girls”. It is most likely the least stressful and least expensive poker you can play around here! It’s a good night to socialize with the ladies and make new friends with the girls who like to play poker. The stakes are very low. Call Polly Brown, 7311614, if you’d like to join us – she’ll fill you in on the details or answer any questions you may have.

ENTERTAINING NEWS So Ladies and G e n t l e m e n ….. May is a quiet month for the Entertainers; not much going on except looking at next year’s play. So I have a story to share with you all. I am remembering my first involvement in the theater which goes back to grade school. I was probably in 3rd or 4th grade. I don’t recall what group was putting it on, but I was in the part that was doing a visual and verbal “The Night Before Christmas”. You do remember back in the day when you could mention Christmas in public schools? Each child was given a part to say from memory and draw a picture of that part on a very large piece of paper. My part was…are you ready for this? “Away to the window I flew like a flash, tore open the shutters and threw (Continues: On page 18)
The Tara Woods Computer Club provides free computer classes every Thursday at 10:30 AM in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. These are open to all residents and visitors. We cover Computer Basics on the 1st and 3rd Thursday each month, and Advanced Topics the 2nd and 4th Thursday. 5th Thursdays are general question and answer sessions. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. We are wrapping up our lessons for this season, and will begin our summer schedule on Thursday, June 9th. We will be meeting at my home during the off-season like we have in past years. These meetings are to be held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays. They offer a more relaxed atmosphere, with coffee and donuts provided for free. My home is located in the northwest quarter of the park, at 19729 Kara Circle. Bring something to take notes with and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 652-0488. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Dave St.Laurent, The Computer Tutor

(Continuing: Entertaining News from page 17) up the sash.” Now I’m sorry but I had no clue what a sash was let alone how you could have one in a window. Nor how you could have shutters to deal with first; the shutters are inside the window? My window in my bedroom at home had a curtain, blinds, and the window which you push up to open, no sash and no shutters. While this was part of the story, it certainly was not the coolest part. The other kids got parts you could do something with. Envy comes even at an early age. Taking direction from the book we were reading I drew a man standing at an open window in a cap and nightgown. But really folks, my house had five men living in it, my Father and 4 brothers, and not one wore a cap to bed let alone a dress! So the day arrived and we were excited to go on stage. From this point on everything seems a little fuzzy. I know I said my lines; unfortunately they were spoken so softly no one could hear. But wait, I did have the great picture I drew. Of course, if it had been right side up it could have made a better effect. I do know that if I had a better part like “With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.” I would have had a chance at greatness; those are some lines a person could work with. My debut on stage ended with a voice so small even I couldn’t hear it and my picture held upside down. I know that my parents were proud of me in spite of these small problems. These are the reasons we love live theater. Pat-one, Stage Manager Entertainers

CLUBHOUSE MINISTRIES
By the time you read this, our “Season” will be almost over. Most of our renters and Snowbirds have gone back up North for the summer. But those of us who are staying here have decided to continue our study class, and not take a break in the summer. It is much too interesting to stop. So come join us and meet some of the nice folks from a few of the other communities who have joined us. And find out for yourself what we are all about. I am sure you will enjoy the experience. We meet every Tuesday at 10:00 AM in the Clubhouse Living Room. Looking forward to meeting you then. Questions: Ruth Simko, 731-7464.
SOUND & LIGHTING COMMITTEE Your support inspires us to keep providing professional entertainment for the community and providing support to community groups, organizations and resident events. Many of you have told us that when the Sound & Lighting puts on a show, you know you are going to enjoy it and we appreciate hearing that. Recently, two members of our group have left our community and now we are looking for new members who would be interested in working with audio/visual systems and equipment. Our loss of these members will make it difficult to continue to provide our services to the community. Experience is preferred but not necessary. If interested, please talk to Polly Brown or Frank Millette. Once again from the Sound & Lighting Committee, thank you for your continued support. Frank Millette
