Greetings from The State of Georgia Director of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Greetings from the Sigma Mu Zeta President Dear Family and Friends, It is my honor and privilege to welcome each of you to the 2016 “A Gathering of Friends” Scholarship luncheon, hosted by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Sigma Mu Zeta Chapter. This is an exciting time for our chapter as we continue to grow, adapt and serve our community. Assembled in this room are some of our communities hardest working public servants, community partners and student scholars from across DeKalb County. We gather to celebrate them and their achievements. Scholarship is one of the foundation principles of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and it is important that we support the learning and achievement of our youth. Today’s scholarship recipients are a small sample of the amazing students from the DeKalb County school system. Narrowing down this year’s recipients from an ever growing pool of well qualified candidates was one of the hardest task we have undertaken this year. This process continues to highlight the need for financial educational assistance and our students need a tremendous amount of support. Your continued support of this event make it possible to help our students and through them, our community. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to help us celebrate these outstanding people and achievements. I ask that you stay engaged in this process and help us shape the future of our community. My personal respect and thanks goes out to all of you. Mrs. Rebecca A. Johnson President Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc Sigma Mu Zeta Chapter.

Greetings from Sigma Mu Zeta Chapter President

Greetings from the Sigma Mu Zeta Scholarship Chair Greetings to Sorors and guests on behalf of the Scholarship Committee of the Sigma Mu Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. It is my honor to extend warm greetings and to welcome you all to the 2016 “A Gathering of Friends” Scholarship luncheon. Sigma Mu Zeta Chapter remains humbled by the overwhelming need within our community. Yet, we are continuously impressed and astounded by the high caliber of students that apply. Over the years, Sigma Mu Zeta has diligently worked and grown from offering one scholarship to a deserving youth to supporting four scholarships due to the Chapter’s tireless fundraising efforts and the generous support from the community. As a result, I am truly honored to have the opportunity to present the 2016 Scholarships to these outstanding and deserving students from the Dekalb County school system. This year, the Scholarship Committee had the pleasure of meeting our top 10 finalists at our first annual Scholarship Tea in an effort to put a “face to the name”. The experience was truly amazing as we were able to interact with the applicants and their parents. I was truly in awe of the outstanding young people in our community and their myriad of accomplishments. The young scholars that will be honored today are truly remarkable and stand as proof that this generation has so much to offer. Each recipient is very active in the community and has worked diligently to achieve outstanding academic records. Sigma Mu Zeta is proud to assist them with moving to the next phase of their journey. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – Nelson Mandela. To this year’s recipients, we say “job well done” in getting to this point…now go out and change the world. Sincerely, Sherry Pope 2nd Vice President Scholarship Committee Chair

Greetings from the Sigma Mu Zeta Scholarship Chair

About Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

About Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded January 16, 1920, at Howard University, Washington, D.C. The Klan was very active during this period and the Harlem Renaissance was acknowledged as the first important movement of Black artists and writers in the U.S. This same year the Volstead Act became effective heralding the start of Prohibition and Tennessee delivered the crucial 36th ratification for the final adoption of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote. The worst and longest economic recession to hit the U.S. would define the end of the decadeThe Great Depression. It was within this environment that five coeds envisioned a sorority which would directly affect positive change, chart a course of action for the 1920s and beyond, raise consciousness of their people, encourage the highest standards of scholastic achievement, and foster a greater sense of unity among its members. These women believed that sorority elitism and socializing overshadowed the real mission for progressive organizations and failed to address fully the societal mores, ills, prejudices, and poverty affecting humanity in general and the black community in particular. Since its inception, Zeta has continued its steady climb into the national spotlight with programs designed to demonstrate concern for the human condition both nationally and internationally. The organization has been innovative in that it has chronicled a number of firsts. It was the first National Pan-Hellenic Council organization to centralize its operations in a national headquarters, first to charter a chapter in Africa, first to form auxiliary groups, and first to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The sorority takes pride in its continued participation in transforming communities through volunteer services from members and its auxiliaries. Zeta Phi Beta has chartered hundreds of chapters worldwide and has a membership of 100,000+. Zeta‘s national and local programs include the endowment of its National Educational Foundation community outreach services and support of multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliaries have given untotaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change. As the sorority moves toward its centennial, it retains its original zest for excellence. It espouses the highest academic ideals and that has resulted in its members serving in groundbreaking roles in all fields of endeavor. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is poised for perpetual service to mankind into her second century and beyond.

History of Sigma Mu Zeta “Freedom to share innermost thoughts, to ask a favor, to show their true feelings. The freedom to simply be themselves.” - Anonymous Zeta Phi Beta Sorority – Sigma Mu Zeta Chapter’s mission is to enhance the community by focusing on the Sorority’s principles, encouraging proactive participation, and showing persistence in all endeavors, while fostering the spirit of sisterhood, and promoting the idea of Finer Womanhood. Sigma Mu Zeta Chapter chartered on December 20, 2001 by 7 classy ladies. At the chapter’s inception, meetings were held at Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Currently, meetings are held at the Lithonia Women’s Center. Sorors Rosemarie Farngalo, Jocasta Frazier, Trellis Buckles, Serafina Williams, Darleen Benson Smith, Cheryl Nugent-Bishop McQueen, Teresa Green Johnson, and Daarina Abdul Mateen had a vision for a new chapter in the Stone Mountain- Lithonia area. Their heartfelt desire was to create a chapter focused on the Zeta principle of Sisterhood. A chapter where a true sisterhood would be forged, finer womanhood would be a consistent norm, and atmosphere that would be welcoming, inviting, and supportive which we believe our 5 pearls envisioned for the organization in 1920. Our many community service projects include March for Babies, Relay for Life, and American Cancer Society. In the spring of 2008, Sigma Mu Zeta chapter sponsored its first undergraduate chapter. Alpha Tau Chapter at Emory University started with 5 initiates, over the years, Alpha Tau Chapter continues to grow and represents Zeta well on Emory’s campus. In 2014 Sigma Mu Zeta became the sponsoring chapter for Iota Sigma at Clayton State University.

Community Involvement Interim CEO Lee N. May

Lee May was appointed Interim Chief Executive Officer of DeKalb County by Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal on July 17, 2013 to administer the county’s $1.2 billion annual budget. As the youngest person to sit in the highest executive seat of the third largest and most populous county in the State of Georgia, May has promoted progress and movement through collaboration with the local school district, responsive public safety, community beautification initiatives, empowerment of youth and children, engaged economic development and business growth, and enhanced government efficiency. Immediately prior to his executive appointment, May served as the Presiding Officer of the Board of Commissioners, Chairman of the Budget & Finance Committee, and a member on the Public Safety and General Safety Committee. Voters first chose May in July 2006 in a special election to fill the seat vacated by (then Commissioner) Congressman Hank Johnson. He has since been re-elected twice by an overwhelming majority. May serves on various national and local associations, including National Association of Counties (NACo) Chair of the Next Generation, Vice Chair of the Community and Economic Development Steering Committee, and member of the Large Urban County Caucus (LUCC). He is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. As both an elected official and a member of the clergy, May has superbly built a bridge between faith and politics in his latest work, “My God, My Politics: A Discussion on Faith and Politics.” In this book, May uses his personal experiences in both worlds to bring clarity for the layperson, telling them that their faith, in fact, can and should inform their politics. May tells us that, “People of faith have every right to inject their faith into the political discourse of this nation.” May, the son of a pastor, is a graduate from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology holding a Masters of Divinity Degree, and a Bachelor of Science degree from the historic Clark Atlanta University. He is married to his college sweetheart, Robin, and is a proud father of three beautiful daughters: Ryann, Reagan, and Rylie.
