One thing is certain: Change is inevitable.

Last Spring, as we entered the global pandemic, the SCV Chamber quickly adapted to our new reality. Part of that new reality was the understanding that coming out of the pandemic we would need to completely evolve the organization to best meet the needs of the business community.

As our businesses begin to return to some semblance of normal, our local economy begins to rebound, and companies set their sights on the future, it’s time for the SCV Chamber to evolve.

PARTNERSHIP Our mantra over the last year has been, “We’re better together.” This means we can no longer be defined simply as a membership organization. We are a community partner with our local businesses. We know that the SCV Chamber must work as a partner with our businesses for the betterment of our community.

We look to partner with every business and every organization in Santa Clarita. A local Chamber of Commerce is the center of a community. And it starts with partnerships and working together as one community.

VALUE A business organization like a Chamber provides meaningful value for businesses to continue to be engaged with the SCV Chamber. We offer a strong value proposition that helps businesses thrive and to be successful. It’s why we launched a $25 million chamber member retirement plan to help businesses lower their costs, reduce administrative time and increase worker benefits to help with employee retention. The City of Santa Clarita’s balanced approach to growing the local economy has been guided by seeking forward-thinking economic development opportunities that serve the needs of residents and support the business community.

The City accomplishes this by establishing strategic partnerships to strengthen efforts in the business community. The City’s ongoing partnership with local organizations such as Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation (SCVEDC) for business attraction and job creation opportunities, Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce, Valley Industry Association (VIA) and College of the Canyons for supporting local business interests, have been critical to the health of the Santa Clarita business community. Each partnership plays an essential role in reaching the City’s economic development goals.

This past year, the coronavirus

(COVID-19) pandemic’s sudden onset and negative impact on many local businesses necessitated the City to respond with quick and creative action. With this in mind, the City created and launched programs designed to help businesses adapt to continue to operate safely, encourage consumer confidence during recovery efforts and infuse financial assistance as soon as possible.

The first two programs the City of Santa Clarita launched in response to the pandemic were Shop Local and Eat Local. The Shop Local and Eat Local programs were designed as tools to assist local businesses that remained open to be able to operate safely until returning to normal operations.

Both programs currently offer local restaurants, retail and other types of businesses impacted by state and county guidelines, free temporary-use permits for outdoor expansion to continue safely serving

patrons, designed to be issued the same day as requested.

The City also launched the Safer Business Commitment initiative.

This program was designed to help restore consumer confidence that was diminished by the pandemic by showing that the businesses were abiding by COVID-19 safety guidelines. The Safer Business Commitment was created in partnership with the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation, Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce and Valley Industry Association. This commitment includes eight points of promise from businesses, including use of face coverings, practicing social distancing, conducting temperature checks on employees, providing hand sanitizer, intensifying cleaning and disinfection, implementing contactless payment when possible, providing general COVID-19 awareness training for employees and ensuring customers, employ-

ees and vendors stay home when feeling ill.

Along with businesses pledging their commitment to safety, the City promotes these businesses through the Safer Business Spotlight, a City-led social media series aimed to highlight participating businesses and invites other businesses to participate. The Safer Business Commitment emphasizes the importance of businesses demonstrating responsibility, along with a concern for the safety of both employees and patrons as they reopen.

Additionally, the City launched, in partnership with the Santa Clarita Economic Development Corporation, the 2020 Santa Clarita Small Business COVID Relief Grant program that provided small businesses a one-time, financial reimbursements of up to $5,000 for expenses incurred from business interruption due to COVID-19 impacts. The grant program was deployed quickly and grants were awarded Eligible expenses included: • Personal protective equipment, such as masks, gloves, face shields, disposable gowns and shoe covers • Cleaning and sanitizing products • Equipment related to remote working and distance learning • Health screening services such as temperature assessment services and symptom screening services

• Physical space modification to allow social distancing indoors as well as expand activities outdoors to continue business operations safely according to current health order guidelines • Adaptive business services: services needed for your business to

stay open while health order restrictions are in place.

Throughout the pandemic, businesses continued to bet on Santa Clarita with office, industrial, retail and residential projects moving forward.

• One of the projects where this is evident is The Center at Needham Ranch, a business park in Newhall that recently welcomed nationally recognized businesses including DrinkPak, LA North Studios, Illumination Dymanics, and Amazon as some of its most recent tenants. The Center’s final building that will complete Phase I is expected in 2021, along with the completion of grading for Phase II. Construction of buildings in Phase II is expected to begin in late 2021 and continue through 2022, making way for ample opportunities for more businesses to expand in Santa Clarita. Another project that is making steady progress is Vista Canyon, a forward-thinking community in Santa Clarita that is focused on connectivity, accessibility, sustainability and will provide a high quality of life for residents, business owners and workers

in the area. After 10 years of planning, Vista Canyon has opened its first office building and parking structure and completed the first 140 new residences within the new Auburn community at Vista Canyon.

• Additionally, Newhall Crossings, a mixed-use project in the City’s premier arts and entertainment district in Old Town Newhall continues to attract residents and visitors to its shops, restaurants, and its newly opened Laemmle Theatre.

• Additional commercial retail centers were recently built on Copperhill Drive as well as Plum Canyon Road at the Skyline Ranch Plaza.

• New office buildings have been added along Orchard Village Road and Tourney Road • In 2020, approximately 1,100 new residential units have been built • Retailers, like Porsche’s new dealership, also recognize Santa Clarita’s growth potential and are opening shop here.

Throughout the many challenges the pandemic brought this past year, the City of Santa Clarita remains committed to prioritizing the needs of residents and businesses by taking strategic action to positively impact the community.

With strategic planning, the City of Santa Clarita’s business-friendly and community-minded approach to economic development has resulted in multiple projects moving forward to enhance the local economy and ensure an exceptional quality of life for residents. While the past year has been challenging, this outlook for continued economic growth looks bright for Santa Clarita.

As I look to the future, I can’t help but reflect on this last year and what life has been like during the past 30+ years of business in the Santa Clarita Valley. It all started in Newhall with my first practice where I started implementing a philosophy of giving back. This philosophy has remained consistent as the business has grown and transitioned to where it is today.
