Mentryville: Santa Clarita Valley’s First Boom Town

In 1876, Charles Alexander Mentry would bring in California’s first commercially viable oil well in Pico Canyon.

He pulled liquid gold out of the ground, and a small town grew around the apparatus.

The well, named Pico No. 4, produced well into the 20th century, as the town grew to over 100 families.

In 1990, the well was finally capped, but not before it earned the distinction of being the longest continually operating oil well in the world.

It now sits as part of a ghost town, with the buildings and architecture of the former community, named after the original oil tycoon as Mentryville, became a California State Historical Landmark.

Despite the town having a well-studied history that dates across three different centuries and thousands of people visiting the park each year, there are still a few unique pieces of this relatively lesser-known slice of SCV history held by the stewards for this antiquated town’s special past: the Friends of Mentryville.

Boomtown

Leon Worden, one of the last remaining members of the Friends of Mentryville club that started back in the mid-90s, knows the modern history of Mentryville and Pico No. 4 better than most, from both first- and second-hand accounts.

He says the way the town is situated now, with the particular buildings, is because of their necessity at to the operations of the community at the time.

“Single men lived in bunkhouses up the canyon,

while married men with families lived in cottages down-canyon,” said Worden. “Alex Mentry built himself a 13-room mansion that’s sort of jokingly called the Pico cottage. Some people call it ‘the Big House,’ even though it wasn’t a prison.”

In terms of the other buildings, the townspeople built a number of others in order to create “a lifestyle out of the canyon,” according to Laurene Weste, who is another member of the Friends of Mentryville, as well as being a member of the SCV Historical society.

“The town flourished for a real long time,” said Weste. “It was a beautiful community.”

The kids used to dam up the creek in the summer so that they could swim in it and create a waterfall like structure, gaslights lit the town, a recreation area that allowed them to play horseshoes and socialize and they built a school house that could hold 13-14 desks.

By the early 1930s, there were too few children, and the kids took a little bus or rode their horses down to Newhall School in order to get their daily education, according to Worden.

“There was a bakery that made a special coconut dessert that people loved,” said Weste. “And it was a dry town, so if they wanted to drink they’d have to come into Newhall.”

The town was one of a kind, Weste said.

Ghost Town

The 1994 Northridge Earthquake rocked the region about four years after the historical well Pico no. 4, closed down.

Chevron owned Pico No. 4 at the time, and while the earthquake was a deadly disaster for the area, the Friends of Mentryville, managed to turn the tragedy into an opportunity to preserve history.

“Chevron, Standard Oil’s new name, was divesting itself of all its unproductive assets (and) Mentryville was an unproductive asset,” Worden said. “Our community had its sights set on creating an open space buffer around the developed parts of what is now the city of Santa Clarita.”

Thanks to state Sen. Ed Davis and his Chief of Staff Hunt Braly; then-Supervisor Michael Antonovich and his deputy Jo Anne Darcy; and Weste, as well as a few others, it was starting to happen, Worden said.

“They successfully rallied support for park bonds that enabled the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, an arm of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, to purchase Towsley Canyon from Chevron,” he said, “which then also donated the 854 acres of Pico Canyon-Mentryville.”

A total of about 3,000 acres were set aside, which are now known as the Santa Clarita Woodlands.

In 1995, there was a big grand reopening celebration in Mentryville, and a group of local residents and hobbyist historians formed a new group, known as the Friends of Mentryville, which would work with the Conservancy and restore the buildings in Mentryville and open them a museum, Worden said.

“We started to do it, thanks to volunteers like Richard Rioux and Duane Harte, but the Conservancy never dedicated the park bond funds to take it the rest of the way. Then came the October 2003 wildfire,” Worden said. “By that time, volunteers from the Friends of Mentryville had already removed the historic artifacts from the buildings, and the city of Santa Clarita graciously offered to store them for us.”

Seven Design Trends for 2023

Bright rooms, natural colors, texture and nature.

Interior design is an ever-changing subject, and as trends come and go, it’s sometimes tough to keep up.

This is why interior experts Hovia have written a list of trends which are predicted to increase their popularity in 2023 which can help you spice up your home and keep in touch with all the latest styles.

Brighter is Better

A house is not a home without that cozy feeling, and to reach that goal would be to make the most of the natural light, however not everyone might be blessed with large windows and exposure to the sun. Therefore, in the upcoming season the focus is all on chandeliers and lamps.

There is no wrong way to choose a pendant, however what is predicted to be in trend this winter are oversized and noticeable ones. Choosing a large chandelier might be scary and it is not for everyone, but this might be the right time to take a leap of faith or overcome the fear of not being able to pull off such a piece of furniture.

The Right Colors

If repainting walls and furniture is something in your to-do list, you might want to go in one of two directions: choose natural colors to embrace the calm vibe of earth tones or, if you’d like a pop of color, stay within the safe lines of mellow and

tranquil blues and greens, with an addition of soft pinks and lavender. To finish off, you’ll find that soft gold trims are what’s missing!

This prediction is backed by Hovia’s latest sales data regarding the most popular colors on their website. This shows how buyers started purchasing these specific colors already during this year, strengthening the idea that greens, blues and natural colors have been and will be on trend.

Multifunctionality

As we move on with time, we also move on from the notion that a house must simply be a place to eat, sleep and chill. Having a multifunctional home might be the best trend 2023 is bringing along with additions such as movie and game rooms, gyms and saunas.

Regardless of common belief, to set up such a room might not be as expensive as expected, all you need is a spare room and either a couple of gym equipment, a projector and a sofa, and a gaming console, all things that are easier and easier to find in a family home.

Curves

Straight lines and geometry out, curves and movement in! One of the most promising trends of this winter is curves and to achieve this style you won’t need to redo your whole house, even though that might be an option for whoever might be able to do so. In fact, just an arched doorway or some fun and lively piece of furniture such as a curved

sofa can just do the trick!

Mid-century chic

It’s the return of the 60s and 70s in our living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens! This means wallpapers, and Hovia knows one thing or two about those, and statement objects.

Try buying a statement sofa, or an adorned cupboard which will be the star of your room, and pair it with soft colors and sleek curves for a house in perfect 2023 trend style.

Add Some Texture

Adding character to any room without making it tacky might be tricky, and that’s where marble comes to rescue. An unexpected texture which is still elegant and smooth, it will catch the eye without being too loud. You can also try and add some pieces that mix different textures and materials!

Nature… in!

Your home can definitely be whatever you would like it to be, so why not a garden? Indoor gardening, plants and more earthy pieces can make your living room feel just like a resort and it’s a 2023 trend that we’ve seen before but that will only grow more and more popular. Great Gifts for Moms From All Walks of Life

The unconditional love and undying patience moms exhibit as they raise their children is worthy of more than just a single day of appreciation in May. Moms do a lot for their families, and though that’s something to celebrate every day, Mother’s Day merits upping the ante in regard to showing Mom how much she’s loved and appreciated.

This year, families can work together to ensure this Mother’s Day is a day for Mom to relax and bask in all the extra attention she deserves.

Serve Breakfast in Bed

Mom might be on breakfast detail on hectic weekday mornings, but Mother’s Day marks the perfect time for spouses and kids to take over those responsibilities. This year, keep the cereal in the pantry and go the extra mile by preparing a homemade breakfast and serving it to Mom in bed. Present the meal with a small bouquet of flowers and some reading material and then let Mom eat in peace and quiet if she so prefers.

Turn the En Suite into a Spa

Nothing complements a relaxing breakfast in bed better than a subsequent dip in Mom’s own private spa. Transform the en suite or another bathroom into Mom’s person-

al soaking space. Clean the bathtub, light some candles around the tub and bathroom, turn on some relaxing music, dim the lights, and then invite Mom in to soak in a freshly drawn hot bubble bath.

Keep Mom Out of the Kitchen

A number of the schoolhouse desks, chalkboards, the charcoal stove the teachers used for heating the classroom and other materials from the town are still being preserved in storage.

Ghost Town Rally

Worden said that the only major development since the 2003 fire has been that the Conservancy has closed off all the buildings except to film companies like HBO, who filmed their series “Big Love” on Mentryville’s grounds.

“The Conservancy hasn’t used the film permit fees or anything else to open the buildings as a museum,” said Worden. “They’re just sitting there, rotting away. It is an incredible and inexcusable shame that the Conservancy has not kept its promise to open Mentryville as a public museum.”

However, officials at the Conservancy say they have been good stewards of the park, there’s just

simply not enough funds in their budget — which services over 75,000 acres of land — to put a strong emphasis on making Mentryville a “living history” museum.

“We have a lot of territory to cover and we’re a small government agency,” said Dash Stolarz, the public affairs director for the Conservancy. “If the world worked the way it should, we should do something like a museum.”

Solarz said the government agency has used its limited grant money and payments from the production companies to oversee things at the park such as new handicapped parking, regular wear and tear on the buildings and repairing much of the vandalism and graffiti that has damaged the historic landmark.

However, with the state putting emphasis on things such as water, climate change and fire prevention, there’s not enough money in the general fund to put into a full time museum like the Friends of Mentryville are requesting, she said.

“When you apply for grants, museums have a really hard time,” said Stolarz. “It’s hard to get

something cool there, like living history, cause how could we open that, how would we afford a fulltime staff?”

“It’s like budgeting when you’re a poor person and you only have so many quarters in your pocket,” said Stolarz. “We love the place … and if there was a way to make it into the way they want we would.”

Regardless of the budget, there is still hope for seeing a revival in Mentryville, according to Weste.

“We’re very proud that we were able to save it,” said Weste. “And we would like to see it reopened as a living re-enactment space.”

Weste compared her vision to Mentryville to the likes of Heritage Junction in Newhall, which has actors occasionally roam its campus reenacting 19th century life, and festivals like the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival bringing thousands in to its historical setting.

“It’s one of a kind … and it’s our history,” said Weste as an explanation for why the community continues to fight for Mentryville’s preservation. “But we’ll need the community’s help.”

May is National Military Appreciation Month

May is National Military Appreciation Month, and as we honor the contributions and sacrifices of our fallen military members on Memorial Day, it’s also essential to recognize the vital, every day role that military spouses and their families play. This Friday, May 12, is National Military Spouse Appreciation Day. It is a time to salute and celebrate the spouses of our military members, whose unwavering support enables our military personnel to fulfill their duties. The life of a military spouse is far from easy, as they face unique struggles and sacrifices that are often unnoticed — dealing with the stress and anxiety of their loved one’s deployment, the

possibility of frequent moves and adjusting to new communities and environments—all while trying to balance their own careers and personal goals with the demands of military life.

The City of Santa Clarita is a community that proudly honors our military personnel and their families by offering several ways to show our appreciation. Two of the most popular programs include the Hometown Heroes Banner Program and the Engraved Bricks Program. The Hometown Heroes Banners Program enables family members of those on active duty to display a picture of their loved one — along with their rank and the branch they serve — on special banners hung throughout the City. For more information on the Hometown Heroes Banner Program, please visit heroes.santa-clarita.com.

The Engraved Bricks Program can be found at Veteran’s Plaza in Old Town Newhall and features the engraved

names of local veterans on the bricks that line the walkways of the Plaza. For more information about the Engraved Bricks Program, go to Santa ClaritaVeterans.com.

The City also offers our City Hall Ceremonies wedding services, which for military couples, can be a practical and beneficial option, especially if they face the possibility of frequent deployments or relocations. In fact, the very first couple to get married as part of this program were Jennifer and her military husband Braden. This program provides a simple and affordable way for couples to tie the knot — not only is this option cost-effective, but it also offers flexibility and convenience for couples who may have limited time or resources. Luckily, a marriage license appointment at the City requires less than 20 minutes of a couples time — while a combination appointment for a marriage license and wedding ceremony takes less than 45 minutes. The

program launched in February 2020, and since then, the City Clerk’s Office has conducted 439 wedding ceremonies and issued 757 marriage licenses. Visit santa-clarita/Weddings for more information.

During this National Military Appreciation Month, please join the City Council and your neighbors in honoring all the men and women who have served this great country. As a community, let’s show our support and appreciation for current members of the armed forces, for those who have fallen serving our country and to the military families not only in Santa Clarita, but around the world.

Ken Striplin can be reached at kstriplin@santa-clarita.com. The views expressed in his column are those of the City and do not necessarily reflect those of The Signal. 

Prep Time 10 mins

Total Time 6 hr 30 mins

Ingredients

Basic Crêpes

Yields 8 serving(s)

Prep Time 10 mins

Total Time 1 hr 30 mins

Ingredients

2 large eggs, room temperature

1 1/4 c. whole milk, room temperature

1 c. all-purpose flour

4 tsp. granulated sugar

1/2 tsp. kosher salt

3 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted, cooled, plus 1/2 tsp. cold unsalted butter

Fresh berries and powdered sugar, for serving (optional)

Directions

Preheat a 9” nonstick skillet over medium heat.

Melt 1/2 teaspoon cold butter in preheated pan. Reduce heat to medium-low. Briefly whisk batter, then pour 1/4 cup into center of pan, lifting pan off heat and slightly tilting in a circular motion to help batter spread into an even circle. Cook until top is set and bottom is golden brown, about 45 seconds. Flip and cook on second side until cooked through, about 45 seconds more.

Using a spatula, fold crêpe into quarters. Transfer to plate. Repeat with remaining batter for a total of 8 crêpes.

A Few of Roeper’s Most Anticipated Films of Summer 2023

Looking back at last year’s Summer Movie Preview, most of the titles we were most keen to see lived up to our expectations, e.g., the global blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick,” which finally turned that Tommy Cruise fellow into a movie star; the gritty and grounded Adam Sandler basketball film “Hustle”; the Austin Butler star-making vehicle “Elvis”; and the dark thrills we gleaned from “Black Phone,” “Nope” and “Emily the Criminal.”

Not that our annual look at the summer movies we’re most excited about is intended to predict box-office success or even widespread critical acclaim; we’re just saying, the potential is there for something special, whether it’s a seemingly slam-dunk sequel (hello, Indiana Jones), a highly anticipated Serious Film (Christopher Nolan in the house) or a certain very pink movie that has generated

so much advance publicity it almost seems like it’s already been released.

With a reminder our Summer Movie Calendar begins May 1 and closes Labor Day weekend, here’s what we’re most excited to see.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ (May 5)

Ever since Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill/ Star-Lord cued up “Come and Get Your Love” by Redbone on his Walkman cassette player nearly a decade ago, the Guardians of the Galaxy have contributed humor, heart and heroics to the MCU. For their curtain call, writer-director James Gunn and the all-star cast led by Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and Karen Gillan reunite for one last mission: to rescue Rocket (Bradley Cooper). As was the case with the first two films, expect an “Awesome Mix” of tunes popping on the soundtrack, including “Creep” by Radiohead, “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” by the Beastie Boys, “Badlands” by Bruce Springsteen and “Crazy on You” by Heart.

‘BlackBerry’ (May 12)

Oh man, remember that miniature “thumbing” keyboard and that optical trackball and the ease with which you could access email? The BlackBerry was a dominant force in the 2000s and early 2010s, holding nearly 50% of the handheld phone market, until it wasn’t. Looks like they’re going for a vibe akin to “The Social Network” with “BlackBerry,” which tells the origin story of the Canadian company and has earned rave reviews on the film festival circuit.

‘You Hurt My Feelings’ (May 26)

Writer-director Nicole Holofcener delivers the kind of smart, engaging, character-driven pieces that would have been right at home in the 1970s, e.g., “Walking and Talking,” “Lovely & Amazing” and “Enough Said,” so there’s no reason to believe she won’t deliver the goods once again with “You Hurt My Feelings,” starring the invaluable Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a novelist and teacher who has been married to Tobias Menzies’ Don for decades, and how’s this for something novel? Word is they’re actually still mad for each other. Like “BlackBerry,” this one has been getting great reviews at film festivals.

‘The Little Mermaid’ (May 26)

der-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld) to save all the universes from the evil supervillain known as Spot (Jason Schwartzman). Expect to see a myriad of Spideys, voiced by the likes of Issa Rae, Jake Johnson, Daniel Kaluuya and Karan Soni.

‘Asteroid City’ (June 16)

Every film from Wes Anderson feels like a major event played in a minor key — the kind of movie that dazzles you with its intelligence, unique visual style and dry wit. From “Rushmore” through “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox” to “Moonrise Kingdom” to “The French Dispatch,” Anderson occupies a special and unique place among modern filmmakers. He has assembled the usual galaxy of talent -- Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Bryan Cranston, Tilda Swinton, on and on it goes — in a mid-1950s period piece set at a Junior Stargazer convention. Let the quirky hijinks begin!

Somehow, some actual grown adult human beings have expressed outrage over the casting of Halle Bailey in Disney’s live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid,” I guess because they think it’s not an historically accurate depiction of … A MERMAID? Let’s leave the idiocy and bigotry in the trash bin where it belongs and say that while Disney’s nonstop parade of live-action takes on their animated catalog hasn’t always been embraced, I’ve found most of them utterly entertaining. And here’s the crazy thing: The existence of these reboots doesn’t mean they’ve erased the beloved animated films of your innocent youth.

‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ (June 2)

I absolutely loved the electric, life-affirming, crazy-clever roller-coaster ride that was “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018), so I’m amped about the return of Miles Morales/Spider-Man (Shameik Moore), who teams up with Gwen Stacy/Spi-

More than 40 years after Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones became an instant adventure movie icon in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” Ford’s Indy makes his fifth and final appearance in an adventure set mostly in the late 1960s, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge playing his goddaughter, Helen Shaw, and the great Mads Mikkelsen as one Jurgen Voller, a former Nazi now working with NASA, and I wouldn’t trust that guy. Steven Spielberg hands over the directing reins to James Mangold (“Logan,” “Ford v. Ferrari”), while the legendary John Williams will contribute what is sure to be a rousing score. 

Traveling Safely

Travel was once a key component of the picture working professionals created of their ideal retirements. While the COVID-19 pandemic put many retirement travel plans on hold, jetting off to distant locales is once again on retirees’ radars.

A 2022 AARP survey found that individuals 50 and over were poised to not only get back on the road, but also spend significantly more money on travel. Prior to the pandemic, Americans 50 and over spent $7,314 annually on travel. By spring 2022, individuals in that same age bracket indicated a readiness to spend $8,369.

Eagerness to get back on the road, in the air or on the high seas could make it easy to overlook some principles of safe travel. However, such an oversight could lead to complications that could make it hard to enjoy time away from home. The following tips can reduce the likelihood that seniors encounter trouble while traveling. Determine if any health issues are affecting your destinations The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a website devoted to travel vaccines (cdc.gov/travel/page/ travel-vaccines), and that page can be an invaluable resource for planning a vacation. What’s more, the CDC provides a specific list of destinations and the latest travel health notices for each of those nations. That list, accessible at cdc.gov/travel/destinations/ list can help seniors determine if there are any health-related safety issues in countries they hope to visit. Speak to your physician A pre-trip consultation with a physician can uncover any issues that might arise

while you’re away. Such issues may be easily managed for domestic travelers who are not planning to visit any especially remote locations, but they will not necessarily be as easily navigated when traveling overseas. Physicians can recommend certain vaccinations or measures to ensure your health while away. A pre-trip doctor visit is also a great time to refill prescriptions that you may need. Take financial precautions Of course, not all travel-related concerns are medical. Finances also require some pre-trip attention. Inflation has caused a sharp spike in the price of various commodities since the start of 2022, so travelers should study up on the cost of food and attractions at their destination to ensure they have enough money to enjoy themselves.

Baggage costs have risen significantly in recent years, so seniors traveling on a budget may want to pack less and do laundry while traveling in an effort to save money. Seniors can look into travel insurance that could reimburse them in the case of delays or cancellations.

Privately share your itinerary Prior to departing, share your itinerary with friends and family. Avoid sharing the itinerary on social media platforms, which can make you a target for criminals at home and at your destination. The itinerary should include where you’re staying, the dates you’re visiting certain locations and the dates of activities you’ll be engaging in on your trip.

Seniors rediscovering the joy of traveling can take various measures to make their trips more safe.

May Lawn and Garden Checklist

As we move into the dry, hot weather of summer, we only have a little while left to take advantage of cooler days for doing outdoor spring cleaning and landscape projects. Although we can possibly experience more cloud cover and maybe even a surprise shower, it’s likely we are done with the measurable rainfall so it’s time to start conserving water and getting the most out of every drop. Sunshine will be growing stronger, so now is also the best time to get swimming pools and water features into top shape for the coming heat.

; Check on your watering systems, replace faulty sprinkler heads, fix drip lines and mend leaks and cracks so you don’t end up with geysers and floods when your systems are on.

Consider replacing old sprinkler heads with low-water heads that should deliver water to your lawn and garden much more efficiently than conventional heads.

The lower volume of water will penetrate slowly without washing off, making your plant roots happier and your water bills lower. Set your sprinklers to water slow and early.

Sprinklers don’t need to be as active as they will in a month or two, so check your timers and adjust them as the weather changes. Then, rather

than leaving water times on longer, add more short-watering periods following a rest of at least 15 to 20 minutes between so the first watering has time to penetrate into the soil.

The idea is to allow water to sink down. And getting projects built now before the summer means you will be ready for the heat to the bottom of plant root systems, not just wet the surface of the soil.

; Enjoy the remaining sub-hundred degree weather for doing labor-intensive projects outdoors. Big repairs and improvements will be more comfortable and safer for you to do while it is still relatively cool.

; It’s time to finish planting your seeds and take a trip to the garden centers. Flowers, shrubs, even potted trees can go into your landscape in May. If temperatures soar after planting, make sure everything remains well watered.

Drape protective shade cloth or light burlap over new plantings to help protect vulnerable newcomers from sunburn damage for the first few days, then slowly expose them to full sun a little at a time.

There’s nothing that can’t be planted at this time of year except maybe some of the cool season vegetables. Artichokes are starting to crop and early strawberries are fruiting. Get

those peppers, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, corn, squash, eggplant and other warm-season plants into the ground now so you can start harvesting in a month or two.

You can plant pumpkin seeds starting now and during the next month. They should be the last seeds to go in the garden if you want to harvest them closer to Halloween rather than in August or September.

This is the end of the best season for planting California native plants. However, you will have to give even the tough natives plenty of water over the summer until they can establish drought-resistant root systems.

; If you have compost from your own pile, this is a good time to dig it into the soil. You can also top dress your soil with compost as a moisture-holding barrier that will help roots stay cooler in heat.

If you are buying it in bags, you might want to consider buying or building a compost bin so you can make your own for free. Locate it far enough from the house that you won’t be attracting rodents to any structures, but close enough that you’ll still be willing to walk the distance to use it.

; If you have fruit setting on your trees, you may want to cover the tree with bird netting before the wildlife

steals everything. Some trees will be fruiting in June but plenty of critters won’t even wait for fruit to ripen before decimating your crops. And with so many previous years of drought, the critters out there are well trained to feed off of our landscapes. So they will be back and be looking for all the easy pickings they can find!

; Clean garden areas and gutters of dead stuff that can ignite in a wildfire. Start protecting your home from potential flying cinders now!

; Keep a careful eye out for insect infestations and animal pests. Unwanted bugs may be overwintering in larger-than-normal numbers. Rodents may have bigger litters with the increased rainfall and plant growth. If that happens, critters could be very destructive in the garden this year. Catch infestations at the first sign and they will be a lot easier to control. Try natural pest controls, such as hosing off aphids with a stream of water and setting up physical barriers such as rabbit and chicken wire fencing … before resorting to dangerous poisons.

; Don’t forget about adding something special such as a pool or hot tub, a sport court, a barbecue or an outdoor room, a flower-cutting or raised vegetable garden to your yard.

I know I am always suggesting expanding outdoor uses into your landscape. But why not get the most out of the land you own? Design it yourself or call in some professional help. Either way, planning ahead will make the job easier and avoid expensive mistakes down the road.

May is a busy time in the garden. And it’s a good time to get out and get some exercise, sunshine and fresh air. There are plenty of jobs to do in the landscape.

What To Do When Migraines Suddenly Strike

Headaches may be a common nuisance, but that doesn’t mean they share common characteristics. For example, migraine sufferers may attest that these headaches can be much harder to endure than others.

The health and wellness resource Healthline says a migraine is a neurological condition that typically causes painful headaches which are accompanied by other symptoms, such as sensitivity to smell, touch, light, and sound. Migraines also may produce numbness or tingling, visual auras and nausea/vomiting.

The American Migraine Foundation advises that migraine attacks feature distinct phases. Recognition and understanding of these phases can help to manage headaches more effectively.

Early Signs

Some of the earliest signs of migraine include fatigue, blurred vision, auras, and other prodrome symptoms unique to people’s migraine histories. These conditions can occur anywhere from a few hours to a few days before a migraine attack. It is important to note that symptoms may not occur with every migraine, nor will early symptoms always result in migraines.

Identifying potential migraine symptoms early may help a person reduce the severity of a migraine. Typically, the migraine headache stage can last for several hours or up to three days, says the AMF.

Reducing Migraine Severity

People identify migraine pain as pulsating, throbbing, pounding, perforating, and debilitating. Some have

compared it to having an ice pick inserted into the head. The Mayo Clinic notes that these steps may help to reduce the severity of migraine symptoms.

• Find a calm environment away from stressors and the bustle of everyday life.

• Relax in a dark, quiet room as light and sound can exacerbate migraine pain.

• Small amounts of caffeine can relieve migraine pain in the earliest stages and enhance the effects of common OTC pain medications like acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Sip small amounts of caffeinated soda, tea or coffee. Don’t overdo it, as that can lead to caffeine withdrawal headaches.

• Try to get steady, uninterrupted

sleep each night. Poor sleep may trigger a migraine. If you have difficulty sleeping, listen to soothing music, establish a bedtime routine, go to bed and wake up at the same

times each day (even on weekends), and exercise regularly. Speak with a health care provider if sleeplessness is chronic.

• Eat a healthy, balanced diet at regular intervals. Fasting may contribute to migraine onset. Avoid foods such as aged cheese, alcohol and chocolate if they trigger your migraines.

• Try to manage stress in any way you can, which may include time management and simplifying your life. Delegate to others if you’re taking on too much.

• Journal when migraine symptoms come on so you can determine if there is a trigger.

Migraine headaches can interrupt life and prove debilitating. Finding relief takes patience. If home remedies do not suffice, people can speak to their doctors about possible medical therapies. (MC)

What to Know About Installing a Pool at Home

ummer is a season of relaxation when school is not in session, vacation season is in full swing and people everywhere are getting outside and soaking up the summer sun. It’s hard to imagine how that can get any better. But it can for people thinking of installing a pool in their backyard.

Pools definitely have a wow factor that’s hard to replicate. Homeowners considering pool installation can take note of these factors as they try to decide if a pool is right for them.

Cost

The cost to install a pool depends on a host of factors, including which type of pool homeowners are considering and where they live. According to the online home improvement resource Angi (formerly Angie’s list), the average cost to install an above ground pool in 2022 was $3,322, while the average inground pool installation in the same year was $55,000.

That’s quite a disparity in price, and homeowners should know that the average cost of each project is higher in certain regions and under certain circumstances. Potential ancillary costs, such as excavation and plumbing relocation, will add to the final cost of the project. The erection of fencing around the pool if no fencing currently surrounds the area where the pool will be located also will add to the final cost.

Pool type

As noted, above ground pools, on

average, require a considerably smaller financial investment than inground pools. This is an important consideration, but which option may ultimately prove the better investment is worth researching. If an inground pool is likely to increase property value by a substantial amount, it could be well worth the extra upfront costs.

Maintena nce

Pools are undeniably fun, but they still require maintenance. The experts at Better Homes & Gardens note that vinyl liners in pools last approximately six to 10 years, while

painted concrete may require a fresh coat of paint every five years. Plaster finishes may last as long as 15 years, while cement-coated products can last a lifetime. Pools also need periodic cleaning, and chemicals to keep the pool operating safely and cleanly will require an additional, if somewhat minimal, financial investment. Homeowners investing in a new pool should be aware of the maintenance required to keep the pool clean and be willing to do that maintenance.

Location

A survey of the land in a yard can reveal how smoothly a pool installation may or may not go. Though it’s possible to install a pool in just about any yard, some spaces might require greater preparation and pre-installation effort than others. Sloped backyards, for example, may require the services of a landscape architect to prepare the space, which can extend the time it takes to complete the project and add the overall cost.

These are just some of the factors that merit consideration when mulling a pool installation. A homeowners’ best resource might be a local pool company who can visit a home, provide an estimate and point out any challenges that may arise during the install. (MC) 

Landscaping Ideas

After installing pools, many homeowners realize that touching up the landscaping around the pool can provide the finishing touch to their backyard retreats. Not all landscaping is the same, and homeowners should choose plants that look beautiful, are tolerant to pool splash-out and won’t outgrow the area. When selecting options for pool landscaping, there are some considerations to keep in mind:

• Choose plants that will provide privacy.

• Know which kind of climate a plant needs prior to purchasing it. Tropical plants may be fitting poolside, but will they endure when the season is over?

• Design according to the theme of the home, as plants should complement the existing style.

• Decide whether you can accept spreading or trailing plants that can cascade over retaining walls and other infrastructure.

• Look at trees that won’t drop too many leaves, flowers or fruit into the water.

• Think about having layers of plants to soften the landscape, which can make a small pool seem bigger and more luxurious, indicates the landscaping company Earth Development, Inc.

• Don’t overlook the possibility of a lawn abutting pavers or concrete surrounding a pool, as it can soften the edges and keep spaces open and inviting.

• Incorporate herbs or fragrant plants, which can transform a pool day into a spa experience. Consider low-maintenance lavender as an option.

Backyard pools can make a backyard retreat that much more enjoyable. Landscaping offers the softness and beauty that adds a finishing touch to poolside retreats. (MC) 

Money Management Tips for Retirees to Consider

What constitutes a perfect retirement is different for everyone. Some people may imagine spending their golden years fishing their days away, while others may aspire to finally embrace their inner globetrotter. Though individuals’ retirement dreams differ, every retiree will need money, which only underscores the importance of a wise and disciplined approach to money management.

Average life expectancies have risen considerably over the last several decades. According to estimates from the United Nations Population Division, the average life expectancy in the United States is 79.

Those figures are a welcome sign, but they may inspire a little fear among seniors who are concerned that they might outlive their money. No one knows how long they will live, but everyone can embrace a handful of money management strategies to increase the chances that they won’t feel a financial pinch in retirement.

Tax Implications of Retirement Withdrawals

Study up on the tax implications of withdrawing from your retirement accounts. Every retirement investment vehicle, whether it’s an IRA or a 401(k), has tax implications. Money withdrawn too early may incur tax

penalties, and even money withdrawn long past retirement age could elevate retirees into a new tax bracket that could prove costly. A financial advisor can help retirees determine the tax implications of withdrawing money from their retirement accounts and may even develop a detailed guideline of when withdrawals should be made and how much should be withdrawn in a given year in order to minimize tax liabilities.

Prioritize Your Own Needs

Though retirees, particularly those with children and grandchildren, may feel an obligation to help their families in difficult financial times, generosity can be very costly for adults who have stopped working. Retirees may or may not have opportunities to generate new income, and even those who do likely won’t make enough to meet their daily financial needs. Given that reality, retirees must prioritize their own financial needs, including their immediate needs and those they will have for the rest of their lives.

Though it might be difficult to turn down loved ones’ requests for financial help, retirees must make sure they can pay their bills and maintain a quality of life that won’t jeopardize their long-term health.

Examine Your Housing Situation

Equity in a home is a feather in the cap of many retirees. Retirees who

New Retirement Factor to Consider

Older adults hoping to retire this year may have a new factor to consider. Aspiring retirees may have to play it very smart to ensure they can maximize their savings for the long haul. It’s a one-two punch caused by continuously rising costs of everyday items and a bearish market for bonds — one of the most common hedges retirement plans use to offset stock declines.

Bonds have been suffering historic losses, according to data from Barclays Aggregate Bond Index. The typical rule of thumb used to be to spend no more than 4% of a portfolio’s original value each year to plan for retirement. With no gains or losses, that money would last around 25 years. However, experts at The Amer-

ican College of Financial Services say that, in today’s economy, 4% and even 3% may be too aggressive. According to Nora Dowd Eisenhower, executive director at the Philadelphia Mayor’s Commission on Aging, higher food prices, longer life expectancies and higher rents/housing costs often lead to financial challenges for people in retirement.

Data from the U.S. Current Population Survey shows a trend in the number of people no longer in retirement. In September 2022, the unretirement rate was 2.6%, up from 2.4% in August. Wealth advisors indicate retirees need to look long and hard at their spending habits, even spending less than their wealth could support. (MC) 

own their homes and live in locations with high property taxes might be able to cash in on their equity by selling their homes and downsizing to a smaller home with lower property taxes.

If moving is not a consideration, discuss a reverse mortgage with a financial advisor. A trusted financial advisor can highlight the advantages and disadvantages of reverse mortgages, which are a great option for some people to improve their financial well-being in retirement.

Stick to a Budget During Retirement

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that roughly 70% of individuals who turn 65 will need long-term care in their lifetimes. That’s just one expense retirees must budget for, and it’s more sizable than some people may recognize.

In fact, the Fidelity Retiree Health Care Cost Estimate found that the average retired couple age 65 in 2022 will

need roughly $315,000 to cover health care expenses in retirement. And health care costs are just one of many expenses retirees can expect to have.

Budgeting and avoiding overspending can ensure retirees have the money they need when they need it.

No one wants to outlive their money in retirement. Various strategies can help retirees effectively manage their money so they can enjoy their golden years without having to worry about their finances. (MC)

Let the Town Center Stay the Center

Santa Clarita, even though it has had enormous growth in the last two decades, has always had a smalltown feel. You see the same people, your neighbors, at our many parks, walking on the paseos, sitting on the sideline of youth sports activities, dropping off kids at our fantastic schools, eating at our wide array of restaurants, and shopping at the mall.

Even though malls across the country, for myriad reasons, are closing down, that doesn’t mean our mall should be torn down and replaced by high-density apartments, a prospect that would be supported by our woefully wrong and out-of-touch governor, Gavin Newsom.

Santa Clarita has done and is doing more than its fair share in adding to the state’s housing supply. The Newhall Ranch project, the south and east area of Plum Canyon, and the yet-undeveloped Bermite property will bring our population north of 400,000. The last thing we need to do is turn the pristine piece of land known as the Town Center into a high-density quagmire. It must remain that one place, right in the center of town, which beckons all Santa Claritans to shop, eat and socialize with their neighbors.

On the commercial side of the equation, the new owner might consider repurposing the mall as an outlet mall. The outlet malls in Camarillo and Cabazon, near Palm Springs, are always busy. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, has two outlet malls that are always busy, and it is a much smaller city than Santa Clarita. Personally, I was super excited about the proposed Costco to be built on the old Sears site. Talk about bringing people together. When was the last time you ran into a neighbor at Costco? Probably not long ago.

Many residents of Santa Clarita have moved here from the San Fernando Valley. Or, to be more honest, to get away from the San Fernando Valley. There is no sense of community in the SFV, just an unplanned hodgepodge of cities, some more affluent than others. There is no Town Center. There is no identifying spirit that binds the residents together.

Our city government has done a fantastic job of maintaining a small-town feel in the third largest city in L.A. County. I appreciate the fact that they value the input of Santa Clarita residents. Please reject any effort to turn our Town Center into anything but a Town Center.

ETHICALLY SPEAKING

Toward a More Perfect Union

Every American should be both aware of, and conversant with, the preamble to our Constitution. It reads, “We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

Here, I am most interested in the goal of “insuring domestic tranquility.” Look around. Increasingly, we are watching the peace and tranquility of civil discourse, and respectful relationships with fellow humans, dissolve into radical labeling and demands that all who oppose are worthy of destruction.

I’ll use myself as an example. If you’ve read this column for any time at all you know that I am a Christ-follower. I hold to a biblical worldview that begins with belief in the existence of one true God who is eternal, sovereign over all things, and in Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World. In today’s world, those who hold this view are sometimes applauded, other times mocked, and now in some circles, labeled as posing an imminent danger to democracy and life in general.

So, continuing the illustration, let me just say that none of the atrocities that can be attributed to religion, and specifically to Christianity – even if true! – are happening today at Grace Baptist Church where I am the senior pastor. We are not militantly hunting down heretics, or any of those who disagree with our views on morality. We do not have a storehouse of weapons behind the baptistry, and neither are we attempting to banish the free speech of other religious adherents, or atheists, or agnostics, or even those who see us as the enemy.

In fact, all those just described are welcome to attend our services and they will be accepted as human beings, created in the image of God Himself, and deserving of life, honor and respect.

And here’s where the example gives way to the proposition. Domestic tranquility begins with acceptance of our fellow travelers on the road of life. But sadly, tranquility too often ends when acceptance is not enough, and affirmation and

applause are demanded. For too many, being accepted and honored as human beings must include affirmation of their ideas, choices and opinions. And, when that doesn’t happen, they forsake relationship for fiery speech, pejorative insults and accusations, and calls for their opponents to be destroyed. And frankly, this happens on both sides of the current ideological wars. And that’s the reason civil discourse, point and counterpoint, collaboration between opponents, and most of all, working together to solve problems have almost entirely left the building in our day!

Let’s say you have chosen a viewpoint with which I disagree. My ethical system says I still view you as a fellow human, and grant you the respect you deserve. And, as long as you reciprocate, we can differ differently from the current social norm, and dialogue. We can listen and hear what one another really thinks and feels, and perhaps learn something beyond the biases of our own personal echo chamber.

But, dealing with our differences with civility and honor will demand we be people of great character, self-control, and most of all, basic mutual human love. And perhaps that’s the greater problem. Love listens while hate screams. Love sacrifices while hate demands.

In the final analysis, it may also be that those who live to denigrate and destroy their opponents are actually resorting to these tactics because they just don’t have cogent, persuasive arguments to buttress their views. Every litigator knows to raise his or her voice and look extra confident when presenting the weakest argument before the jury. So too, history has proven that those whose arguments are built on quicksand shout the loudest, trust in ad hominem statements, and angrily demand the win before calling for the destruction of the unconvinced.

I say let’s get back to acceptance without the need for affirmation. As a Christ-follower, I don’t expect anyone to affirm my views until they are convinced of their verity. But, as a human being, I do expect that all will recognize my right to life, to hold an opinion civilly, and to be part of the great experiment we call the United States of America.
