There’s nothing worse than creating a beautiful logo only to discover it’s too similar to a competitor’s. TNOP To PLAN

Tnop Wangsillapakun is the founder of TNOP DESIGN, a Bangkok-based design studio that focuses on creating a perfect balance between art and design. Founded in Chicago in 2005, TNOP believes that sharp design is about the critical balance of conceptual work and craftsmanship

1

Project Initiation

TNOP Issue

One of the most important steps in the design process is accumulating the information you’ll need. This is usually achieved by either a faceto-face meeting with the client, a questionnaire, or even a Skype meeting if you really wish to establish a personal relationship with your .client In gathering this information, you now know your client’s objectives and can focus on the details for .inclusion in your brief

2

After you’ve met with the client and have a firm understanding of the task at hand, it’s now time to put your .nose to the grindstone While this stage isn’t usually going Research to be your favorite but it’s well worth it in the end. 3

Strategy

This step may vary depending on the scale of your project, but generally it’s best to develop a strategy before putting pencil to paper. Through this you analyze the research gathered and decide on design and functionality criteria. This can be as simple as a theme carried across all marketing materials. You can present this strategy to the client to get approval or disapproval before heading on in the hopes of getting .more creative direction

"

For nearly two decades Tnop Wangsillapakun has been producing phenomenal work from .his base in Chicago, IL

"

5

Presentation/Refinement

Often best presented as a PDF file with the design in context. It’s now the job of the client to review the designs and provide feedback based on their objectives and the needs of their target audience At this stage the designer is tasked with making changes to the aesthetic elements based on client’s request or putting the final touches on an .agreed upon design

4

Development

Develop several different concepts through the above methods. The idea here is to create as many different options before choosing the most viable one. Through the help of the client, these ideas can them be narrowed down to a couple of ideas for further development and refinement A great way to get your ideas down 8

KAYAB Magazine

TNOP Issue

Once you have a clear strategy, the idea is to then create preliminary design concepts based on the strategy you developed. Developing concepts can be done through various means when inspiration strikes, but here are some of the most effective A diagram that’s used to represent words, ideas, and tasks linked to your central idea. Encourages a brainstorming approach to planning and organizing tasks. Meant to pre-visualize a motion picture, animation, etc by organizing illustration in a sequence

6

Production/ Launch

With an approved design, the designer is now able to implement the finished piece across all deliverables, which may include both print and web. Depending on the project and/ or media, the materials may often be handed off to a third-party, which :includes Prepress/Printer Media Outlet Launched on the Web

If it’s a web project, instructions and documentation may be required for administrative purposes, as well as .Search Engine submission

7

Completion

With an approved design, the You can now invoice your client the remaining bill for the project. Oftentimes this is best achieved through online invoicing software, which will help save time associated with putting together an invoice. One application that I personally .recommend is Freshbooks With a solid process in place for completing a design project, you not only establish a closer relationship with your client, but you take a lot of the guesswork away when it comes down to creating something memorable for them. Consider it one less hurdle you have to overcome. Do you have a design process in place that you utilize with each new project? Feel free to share any tips .with us that I may have missed

TNOP Issue

There’s nothing more rewarding than turning over a completed project to a satisfied client, so congratulate .yourself

.Space as a tool Beside the object itself, the space around it is one of the essential elements a designer needs to consider. In other words: space is a tool. To visualise how space is used in Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, I created a system to map and analyse the museum spaces in terms of usage. My Catalogue of White Space literally shows the possibility to add content. On the other hand, it describes the significant role of white space in art and .design

NOP: We listed 3 addresses for our company but most of the activities are coming out of the Chicago office. We used to have four partners, two in Bangkok and two in the States when we were bePOS|+|VE design. But I wanted to stay small, so I could control my work. It’s quite hard, but it’s been working very well for me. I handle pretty much everything from dealing with clients to paperwork to design. At the moment, we have one designer in our Bangkok office and a partner in the Italy office to help when I need it. We also work with freelancers once in a while

TNOP Issue

I’m not sure If I like the term global identity. Even though message in design is universal the style that’s chosen to represent the message can determine who you want to speak to. I don’t think there are any differences in terms of the design process, production or how I work between handling a client in Thailand or in the U.S. But the perception toward design of the clients in Thailand is much more limited. That’s because the U.S. design scene has a longer history and has a much broader scale. So, it’s a challenging process to sell my idea to a client in Thailand. But it’s getting better and better since there’re more and more designers producing good work in .Thailand

TNOP

The design scene and design community in Asia is definitely growing bigger and stronger. It’s very exciting. Especially in Thailand, we have more and more young and talented designers that work independently. 10 years ago, everybody would want to work in an advertising agency. This probably applies to many countries in Asia. But now the internet has totally change that perception. Young Asian designers now have found the way to express themselves

Then & Now

A

s with almost anything nowadays, there is a history that goes back a long way when it comes to graphic design. Some people may think that this whole thing we call graphics is just something we made up when we first started using computers, and it became possible to draw simple pictures on them. Of course we have evolved since then, and the way we do things today is a lot more advanced than back then. Today while attending a graphic design degree program we have tablets that can do stuff ten thousand times better than the first software we could draw on. It’s all about processor speed really, and the software we have access to is getting more and more advanced . However, the whole graphic design scene is way older than that. It actually goes way back to the stone

the production of visual statements on some surface, such as a wall, canvas, pottery, computer screen, paper, stone or landscape. It includes everything that relates to creation

Even though the infographic isn’t exactly all about graphic design, it helps you understand the levels that graphic design has gone through, how technology changed its course, and how it constantly kept evolving through the years. It’s interesting to follow the evolution through the milestones that changed graphic design and brought us all the way to where we are today. Wuation really is .where we are heading after this With games like Minecraft and Terraria, we’re seeing a little retro graphics being used again, and I wonder where this will take us in the near future. Will we retreat a bit to what we used to think was cool, or will we see a whole new kind of graphic design in games and in web and graphic design? I guess the .future holds the answer to that one However, the whole graphic design scene is way older than that. It actually goes way back to the stone

the stone age when the people chalked and cut their images into stone. I am sure they used other materials to draw on, but stone was the only one that kept their creative outlets for years and years. Once again, Tech King put together a really interesting look at the history of graphic design, and they call it “The Darwinian Evolution of Graphic ”.Design

MILIN The Thai fashion industry, encompassing leather, and garment industries, contributes to Bangkok’s creative and energetic ambiance. However, fashion is still a young industry in Thailand compared to European fashion, as its first brands appeared only some 25 years ago. Nevertheless, in terms of market range, the Thai fashion industry has grown to cover near the whole pret-a-porter sector: women’s, men’s, and children’s fashions are all well-represented in .Bangkok’s shop
