The Well Dressed Desk

It wasn’t too long ago that a home office was nothing more than a desk, chair and computer, plus a few function-driven accessories, but times have definitely changed. According to a study by the Telework Research Network, one in four American households — close to 30 million people — now work out of a home office at least once a week, and that number is expected to increase by 63 percent in the next five years. These people are no longer satisfied with ordinary — they want their offices to be as special as the rest of the house. Whether they are self-employed, entrepreneurs, telecommuters or even cubicle denizens, people spend a great deal of time working and while doing so, they want these spaces to look professional and polished.

Manythings Issue 17 - Summer 2016

Emily Ley, founder and creative director of Emily Ley, observed that with this cultural shift. The old “How do I spice up my cubicle?” debate has transitioned into “How do I turn my home area into an inspiring, productive functional workspace?” “The well-dressed desk is the new corner office with a view. Productivity is a priority and looking the part has taken a back seat to creating a space to mirror my personality,” she explained. “Here on our team, we’re busy mamas, wives, college students and business ladies. We get it. We know life is fast-paced and busy. Having the tools to make the good stuff (and the necessary) happen is essential.”

“Life is becoming more edited by design and people are having an option to choose what they surround themselves with on their desks.”

LONDON STATIONERY SHOW

The sixth London Stationery Show closed its doors last week after recording its highest ever visitor numbers and achieving several other record breaking firsts. The exhibition had its highest number of visitors to date, up 27 percent from 2015; the highest number of stands at 155, up 15 percent from 2015; its highest number of Stationery Award entries, up more than 100 from 2015 and welcomed visitors from 43 countries.

One of this year’s Stationery Awards judges, Louisa Brenton, gift and stationery buyer at Bentalls, Fenwick Kingston commented, “I was very impressed by the caliber of product at the show… it was good to see a lot more gifting orientated product on display, and, as always, I thought the new product on display at the entrance looked fabulous.” The biggest winners in the Awards this year were Notable Designs, with two wins and three commendations, and Stone Marketing also with two wins and one commendation. Emma Fletcher of Mum’s Office won the Diaries & Organisers category with her Christmas Book and picked up the discretionary Judges’ Choice Award, given this year to recognize the individual passion and interest that had gone into creating the Book. Henri Davis, independent retail advisor and vice-president of The Giftware Association, who again chaired the judging panel commented, “The judges were thrilled by the strength and diversity of the products entered this year. With four new judges on the panel there were comments about how useful it was to see focused selections of new products to evaluate and compare. They were all making notes of products they wanted to follow up on.”

“The London Stationery Show showcases the creativity and relevance of stationery to the retail market and beyond. Fashionable, educational, personal, creative and diverse — there are so many functions that stationery products satisfy and consumers love it more than ever. The London Stationery Show is the place for retailers to discover these, review ranges and choose paper and writing products that will add to and complement their product offer.”

Manythings Issue 17 - Summer 2016

IN TRUE COLOUR An interview with Kate Fulford The owner of Troolie

Truly chic. Truly fun. Truly fabulous! There’s a vibrant scene swirling around at Troolie — a most colorful stationery and gift shop in Concordia, Ore., that aims to make the ordinary a bit more fun. Founded by “lifelong letter writer, thank-you-note giver and paper lover,” Kate Fulford, the shop’s name was inspired by both the word ‘truly’ and the art of writing letters. “I thought about the ways people sign letters, and ‘Yours Truly’ really resonated with me. I also liked that if something is ‘truly’ then it’s the epitome,” observed Fulford. Fulford added her own twist by spelling the word out phonetically due to a love of double oo’s. In fact, prior to opening Troolie in the Portland area in March 2012, Fulford was based in San Francisco where she owned “ooma,” a women’s boutique. Retail is certainly a forte for Fulford, who worked in the graphic design/marketing industry before segueing into retail. Troolie located near the artsy Alberta Arts District, Troolie occupies just 900 square feet of space. Affordable and trendy, this section of the Portland area has enticed quite a few letterpress designers — and Troolie works with several of them. “People always ask me if all of my cards are made locally. Heck no! Though we love supporting our local lovelies, amazing design can be found all over the world. We don’t discriminate based on geography,” Fulford noted. Troolie’s vibrant interior is bright and colorful, chic and fun. Its modern décor boasts a black and white theme, part of Troolie’s signature look. Since the merchandise is very colorful, Fulford opted for a simple palette with just a few pops of color and vintage gold glamour accents. Manythings Issue 17 - Summer 2016
