Toronto designer Matthew Gallagher puts us in the mood for spring with a retro-inspired lookbook By JESSICA FLOWER Right now, as Canadians, it’s difficult to think of anything but winter. Thankfully there is at least one among us who has his sights firmly set on the warmer months ahead. Toronto-based designer Matthew Gallagher has just released a colourful look-book for his Spring 2014 collection, and the tropical vibes have us day dreaming the snow away. The playful campaign and accompanying video, produced by The Collections, Toronto Fashion Week cool kid organizing body, features plenty of bold retro silhouettes done in an array of tropical prints and hues. Gallagher’s peekaboo pink lining, intricate tailoring and thoughtful detailing are just some of the reasons we’re placing the designer on our list of ones to watch. The entire collection is a throwback to glamorous heyday of Hollywood and Palm Springs—those sky-high beehives and headscarves would be perfectly at home speeding along the Pacific Coast Highway in a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado, with a dashing beau in the seat next to us… but we digress. If there are any lingering doubts of how summer worthy this collection is, the Cayman Islands Stylemaker program, is the main sponsor for Gallagher’s show. Chosen by the islands as a cultural endeavour that best represents the lifestyle and ease of the Caribbean destination, the program helps support upcoming designers through lookbooks, videos and more. And based on the collection’s cabana-ready designs, echoing the hues of the tropical flora, we can’t help but agree. But it begs the question—is there a complimentary daiquiri with every purchase? To see more of Maison Matthew Gallagher, his show will be closing out World Mastercard Fashion Week next Friday March 21, 2014 at 8pm.

After what seems like a hundred seasons of “no makeup” makeup dominating the runways, the Spring 2016 shows brought back something we’d been seriously missing—fun. And colour! If you can believe it, models wore actual makeup. Yes, as in more than just a quick swipe of moisturizer. So what better way to kick off the 10 biggest trends of the season than with the boldest of the bunch: blue makeup. Your eighth grade staple has grown up. Rather than a frosty hue, at Marc Jacobs and Hugo Boss, the eyeliner was graphic and an electric cobalt. At Missoni and Chanel, more than just a touch of blue was applied to models’ eyes (and more). You’ll see what we mean. If the clothes on the runways were any indication, the ’90s are still alive and well, and everyone’s favourite decade has made its way above the shoulders. Matte brown shades adorned models’ lips at Burberry and Givenchy (and no, they didn’t use Kylie Lip Kit),

while baby bangs popped up at Blumarine and Christopher Kane. And if you’ve really been craving some excitement, you’ll be happy to know that glitter is back, in many forms. From the subtle gold shadow at Etro, to the glued-on sequins at Giambattista Valli, not only is glitter now appropriate for daytime, but it’s no longer confined to your wardrobe, either. Your face is totally fair game. When it comes to hair, ponytails have made their way outside of the gym and now regularly show up on the red carpet, and braids—well, if you follow any of the Kardashians on Instagram, you already know that braids are having their moment in the spotlight right now. And finally, if all of that seems a bit intimidating to you, lover of French beauty and minimalism, fear not, because red lips have endured yet another season. Here are the top 10 beauty trends of Spring 2016, and the products you need to achieve each look.

BLUE MAKEUP By the time Chanel models rolled their luggage down the runway in Paris—donning sleep masks the colour of the sky, painted on by makup artist. Tom Pecheux—it was already clear that blue was the season’s MVP. Artists left no paint chip behind, employing everything from teal and turquoise to cobalt and cornflower to line eyes, dust lids, tiny lashes and even dress brows.

PONYTAILS The pony reinvents itself every season. This season, tails were handled in a multitude of varieties: in loose, lazy-Sunday-level knots, split into two (grown up girl pigtails), twisted to resemble rope and tightly braided. With this in mind, it’s clear the humble elastic is having its moment in the spotlight.

SPRING run way look

Of all the newness that blew across the four fashion capitals during fashion month, femininity, nostalgia and whimsy whipped up the biggest buzz when it comes to Spring fashion 2016. The ‘80s obsession that has defined recent seasons is no longer the decade du jour. Pouf skirts and shoulder pads have been deflated and replaced with a grittier, grungier vibe. The nineties are the new comeback kid, and judging by Saint Laurent’s Courtney Love-inspired slip dresses topped with tiaras and Christopher Kane’s bland oversized cardigans (hello Kurt Cobain), it’s an I-don’t care-let-them-stare look that goes well with the disruptors in today’s world. SJM DFP Upper Big Box But zoom through another portal of Spring fashion 2016 and you’ll find yourself back in the Victorian Era. There were ethereal full-length dresses at Alexander McQueen and Erdem, and neck ruffles and vest at Louis Vuitton. Clearly, romance and old world charm is also in the air.

SPRING STYLE

Vacation dressing is a big theme too—Tommy Hilfiger’s flowy maxi dresses and crochet bikinis are the stuff of island dreams, while Dolce & Gabbana’s colourful raffia bags are the perfect blend of market-meets-city. Speaking of the street, luxe athleisure looks continue to soak up serious sidewalk time, with Vetements and Alexander Wang being two of the biggest MVPs this season. If bling is your thing, then the latest OTT embellishment will keep you sparkling day and night. From shards of mirror to tinsel-like strands, futuristic silver metallics seem to have arrived from a galaxy far, far away. Spring fashion 2016 casts a wide net, drawing inspo from the past, present and future. Here are the top 10 trends you need in your closet now, because #goals.
