TOWN OF HUNTINGTON

W

elcome to Centerport, NY - a little coastal town located between thriving Huntington and Northport Villages in the northwest section of Suffolk County. This hamlet, which is home to many waterfront communities, is perched on both Centerport and Northport Harbors and dates back to the early 1600s. The Mill Dam Bridge was once the location of all the shipping and mills. Its prime geographic location was the perfect spot for the milling and shipping industries. Recently rebuilt to its current glory, many days you can find residents fishing off the bridge or looking for the famous local Eagles. Formally known as Little Cow Harbor, Centerport is part of the township of Huntington, on Long Island’s North Shore.

the

Gold Coast During the 20th Century, many wealthy families built their summer mansions on the Gold Coast, including William Kissam Vanderbilt II, whose estate located on the Little Neck Peninsula of Centerport is known as Eagles Nest. The 43-acre estate is now open to the public and contains the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium. There are many functions held at the Vanderbilt, from Wine Tasting to Car Shows and Holiday Tree Lightings, just to name a few. Signature Premier Properties is a proud sponsor of the museum. Check out the planetarium’s laser light show and keep your eye out for our logo displayed on the domed ceiling before the show.

Beach and Boating Life The population of Centerport is roughly 6,000 (2,000 households), and it has a total area of 2.3 square miles. Its proximity to the water and strong sense of community make this area a hub for boating lovers. Centerport Yacht Club was founded in 1947 and is a social and athletic focal point for many residents. The fabulous covered front porch of its main building overlooking Northport Harbor is splendid. The yacht club offers a full waterfront facility including a junior sailing program and sponsors sail racing and regattas every year. There are some public beaches which residents of Huntington Township have access to. The Town of Huntington offers many exciting things at these beaches, from swim lessons, and sailing to school crew teams leaving from the shore.

The Area is

Steeped in History The Suydam House, built in 1730, is one of the area’s oldest surviving houses. You can see the house on the corner of Little Neck and 25A.

Huntington Beach Community Association (HBCA) started as a bungalow community in the late 1920s. Many of the original owners came from the city after seeing ads in the NY Mirror, advertising bathing beaches and lots for sale starting at $195 for this summer colony. Through the years HBCA has continued to grow and maintain that same community feel, from its firehouse, casino, and beach pavilion to the boat dock, ramp and a summer camp for children. All of these amenities and its yearly calendar of events, make this beachfront neighborhood a highly desired place to live.

Camp Alvernia was the first Catholic summer camp in the United States, established in 1886. It all started when Brother Isidore Garvey and his students collected enough Kirkman’s soap coupons to finance the purchase of a beautiful piece of land, which they christened “Alvernia” after Mount LaVerna in Italy. Today, 130 years later, it is still an active summer camp offering children a special summer at the water’s edge, filled with swimming, sailing, sports, crafts, and so much more!

For the Callie’s

It might be only 2.3 miles in area, but you won’t go hungry! Start your day with a fabulous scone and coffee at the Hometown Bakery, or a delicious muffin from Blondies. Then there is the new kid on the block: Callie’s, where a casual beach vibe meets cool luncheonette! There is always the local staple, Nickys of Centerport, known for its wings, it is an excellent place for family gatherings. If you’re looking for that “special place” where the food is as good as the view, head to Mill Pond House for a meal that never disappoints. Oh, and then there is the “Shack”, the side of the road seafood joint, open for the summer season, that always draws a crowd.
