History

THE EDWARDS FAMILY

John Edwards of East Hampton founded Sayville; he built the first home in there in 1761 at what is now the northwest corner of Foster Avenue and Edwards Street. His son Matthew built a home in 1785 on the land that is now the intersection of Edwards Street and Gillette Avenue. In 1838 Matthew’s son, James moved the house to the intersection of Collins Avenue and Edwards Street where it still remains. The home remained in the Edwards family until 1948 when Clarissa Edwards donated the home and the land to the Sayville Historical Society.

It was known informally as “over south” until 1838. The community members took a vote and declared the name “Seaville.” According to history, the town clerk misspelled the name after referencing an old Bible he had brought from England years before. In his bible the word “sea” was spelled “say” and “Sayville” became the name he sent to Washington for registration. As transportation improved in the mid-1800s, the Long Island Rail Road was built, and Sayville became a popular summer tourist destination.

THE GREENE FAMILY John Greene settled what is now known as West Sayville in 1767. As the second family in Sayville, they purchased land that once belonged to William Nicoll, which ran from the bay to a mile north of Main Street between Morris Brook and Green’s Creek. His son William built a home on the corner of Main Street and what is now known as Cherry Avenue. It was made famous by a visit from George Washington when he stopped for tea during his tour of Long Island in the spring of 1790. The home still stands in its original location of 93 Main Street.

From the late 1800s to the early 1900s there were many grand homes and large estates being built in the area, including Meadow Croft which was the home of John Ellis Roosevelt, a cousin of Theodore Roosevelt. Meadow Croft still stands and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Washington D.C. In 1994, California State University at Fresno designated Sayville the “friendliest town in America”.

Some of Our F A V O R I T E P L A C E S LOUGHLIN VINEYARD Hidden away in Roosevelt’s historic Meadow Croft Estate lies this local vineyard and winery. Noted as the closest vineyard to Manhattan, they produce five different types of wine a year from its seven-acre crop. Pack a picnic to enjoy in the vineyard and enjoy an afternoon tasting their popular red, white, and blush wines.

THE MANSION AT WEST SAYVILLE Constructed in 1909 by Commodore Frederick Bourne and Mrs. Bourne as a wedding gift to their daughter Florence, this historic seaside estate features vast grounds and unobstructed views of the Great South Bay and Fire Island.

WEST SAYVILLE COUNTRY CLUB The former estate of Millionaire Anson Hard, it was named for its sprawling salt meadows buffering the Great South Bay. Suffolk County acquired it in 1967 and now encompasses the West Sayville Country Club and Long Island Maritime Museum.

LONG ISLAND MARITIME MUSEUM Founded in 1966 as the Suffolk Marine Museum, it was dedicated to the collection and preservation of artifacts of the maritime history of Long Island. Set on 14 waterfront acres of the former Meadowedge Estate, it features an extensive collection of boats, small vessels, and related tools and implements of the maritime crafts and trade. Through their interactive exhibits, you can discover the links between the Island’s maritime and natural histories and encounter some of the creatures living in our local waters.

ISLIP GRANGE PARK This 12-acre park located on the northwest corner of Montauk Highway and Broadway Avenue is a cluster of restored 19th-century buildings that have been relocated to the park from their original locations. Buildings like the Carriage Shed, Dutch Reformed Church, Estate Managers Cottage, Ockers Barn and The Windmill illustrate what living in preCivil War Long Island would have looked like. In addition to its historical significance, Islip Grange is revered for its annual & seasonal activities like The Apple Festival and Civil War Weekend.
