Live Like a Local Everyone Wants To Be A Townie! This week we are featuring some of the great Main Streets on Long Island. With dozens of towns and villages to choose from we say it’s time to GET MOVING. Living in a town with a thriving Main Street is in high demand. People love strolling along, window shopping, seeing a show, and checking out the local art galleries and museums. Many of our Main Streets are a culinary heaven for foodies with choices from all over the world. In the mood to dine outside? No problem. Each year more and more restaurants are offering curbside dining. Isn’t it great to sit and people watch as you enjoy your meal? In the mood for a spirit? You can find wine bistros, breweries, and rooftop bars. The culinary specialty stores are another treat – visit the local cheese shops, bakeries, and tea rooms. These amazing towns all have a pulse, regardless of the season. They are jumping with activity. There’s weekly music in the park, farmers markets, festivals, and parades. It’s an open invitation to always having a local social scene. These villages are all steeped in history, many were established hundreds of years ago. It’s always interesting to do a walking tour or visit the town’s history museum. Was it a whaling center? Did George Washington ever sleep there? Did the first resident sail with the infamous pirate Captain Kidd? You will be amazed by what you learn. We are finding people of all ages wanting to move to these towns and villages. Walking the dog, and grabbing a cup of coffee in the morning at the local coffee shop or diner is on everyone’s wish list. How wonderful to be able to go for a quick bike ride to the town park with the kids, enjoy the playground and end the adventure with an ice cream sundae. Into antiquing? Browse the local shop and find your treasure! We encourage you to get out and explore the many towns and villages on our lovely Island, you too will want to be a TOWNIE. Pro Tip: Heartichoke has the best whimsical gifts at 145 Main Street! 1:00PM | Place your purchases in the car and hit one of the two waterfront playgrounds with the kids. Enjoy the boats at the town dock and don’t miss the photo op in the park’s beautiful gazebo. 2:00PM | Jump in the car for a few minutes’ drive to have lunch at the Britannia Yachting Center’s Whales Tale Restaurant. Pro Tip: The fish tacos are the best at 81 Fort Salonga Road! 3:00PM | Stop at Lewis Oliver Farm on Burt Ave, they are open daily from 10-4pm. This historic landmark dates back to the mid 1800’s and is a sanctuary to a small family of rescued farm animals. A small donation is requested. 4:00PM | Take a drive down Asharoken Avenue (Northport’s “Dune Road”) a thin strip of land with homes on the bay and sound. 5:30PM | Grab dinner at the gastropub Rockin’ Fish. You have your choice of outdoor or indoor seating, located at 155 Main Street. 7:00PM | Feeling nostalgic? It’s time for homemade local ice cream for dessert at the Northport Sweet Shop, circa 1929. It’s a trip back in time at 55 Main Street! 7:30PM | Get your culture fix at the John Engeman Theater, Long Island’s only year round professional theater.
