Live Like a Local It’s Time to Rest in the Nest! This week we‘re featuring the hidden joys of a stay-cation. Say goodbye to the stress of packing, airline flights and endless traffic as you head off the island! We all love that smile we have as we walk out of the office on the Friday before a week’s long vacation! Hard work pays off but who doesn’t need a little down time every now and then? Don’t have a getaway destination planned? Not a problem! Sometimes our daily lives get so hectic that we forget how to enjoy our own homes. This issue of Live Like a Local is full of ideas on how to make the most of the place we feel most comforted and protected, our own home. Maybe it’s time to visit your local bookstore to browse the aisles looking for the new bestseller, then find that little nook in your house and spend the days lazily flipping through the pages. How about hosting a lovely summer soirée? Make it a Farm to Table theme, using the freshest ingredients from your herb and vegetable garden and place some fresh flowers throughout the house. Don’t have a garden? Head to your local farmers market and your selection will be endless. Select your menu, send out the invites, string some lights and set the table! What time should we be over? Still looking for a new adventure? Look no further than our Island! We have included 6 Day Tripper Itineraries from our past issues of Live Like a Local. Choose one or do them all! You will be sure to need a day of rest when you return from these action packed days! Sometimes waking up and grabbing a cup of coffee on the porch without having to rush out, swimming in the pool, or just having a lazy day at home is worth its weight in gold. So this stay-cation, we want you to hit “pause”, disconnect from the digital world we live in, and fall in love with your house again! Summer Recipes Pick the ingredients right from your garden or local farmers market and get cookin’! TOMATO & CUCUMBER SALAD INGREDIENTS 5 plum tomatoes, halved lengthwise, and thinly sliced 1/4 red onion, halved lengthwise, and thinly sliced 1 cucumber, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 splashes red wine vinegar Coarse salt and black pepper

DIRECTIONS Combine all the ingredients and let stand for about 20 minutes. Re-toss and serve salad with crusty bread for mopping up juices and oil.

MIXED BERRY SMOOTHIE INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 cups apple juice, milk or other flavor of juice 1 banana sliced 1 1/2 cups mixed berries 3/4 cup vanilla Greek yogurt 1 tablespoon honey (optional) Optional garnish: fresh berries and mint sprigs

DIRECTIONS Combine ingredients and add a little more liquid if it is too thick. Garnish with berries and mint sprigs.

SOUTHSIDE COCKTAIL INGREDIENTS 10-12 Mint Leaves 2 Ounces of Gin 3/4 ounces fresh squeezed lemon juice 3/4 ounces of simple syrup

DIRECTIONS Combine all ingredients except mint in cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake well. Open the shaker and add the mint. Roll the mint leaves in shaker to gently release the mint oils. Strain into a highball glass and garnish with a mint leaf.


AUTHENTIC CHIMICHURRI SAUCE INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup olive oil 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1/2 cup finely chopped parsley 3-4 cloves garlic, finely chopped or minced 1 red chili, deseeded and chopped 3/4 teaspoon dried oregano salt and pepper

DIRECTIONS Mix all ingredients together in a bowl for 5-10 minutes Use to baste chicken or steaks on the grill

HOMEMADE BASIL PESTO INGREDIENTS 3 cups fresh basil leaves, slightly packed 1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese 2 teaspoons (2 cloves) minced garlic 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1/4 cup toasted pine nuts 2 teaspoons lemon juice 1/2 cup olive oil OPTIONAL: pinch of red pepper flakes

DIRECTIONS Combine ingredients in food processor and stream in the olive oil. Process until the oil is well combined.

DAY ONE | Destination | Northport Village 9:00AM | Grab your cooler and get ready to fall in love with Northport! 9:30AM | Northport Farmers Market (Saturdays Only) – Enjoy the colors and aromas as you purchase the fruits, vegetables, and flowers. There’s a pickle stand, fresh mozzarella and breads, empanadas and street art. Enjoy the live music as you shop like a local at this harbor front farmers market. 10:30AM | Walk across the street and grab a delicious breakfast at either Tim’s Shipwreck Diner or the Copenhagen Bakery. 11:30AM | Stroll through one of Long Island’s prettiest towns. Be sure to stop along the way at the many great shops. You will find the Cigar Shop, Candy Shop, Toy Store, Ice Cream Parlor, and Boutiques. Pro Tip: Heartichoke has the best whimsical gifts at 145 Main Street! 1:00PM | Place your purchases in the car and hit one of the two waterfront playgrounds with the kids. Enjoy the boats at the town dock and don’t miss the photo op in the park’s beautiful gazebo. 2:00PM | Jump in the car for a few minutes’ drive to have lunch at the Britannia Yachting Center’s Whales Tale Restaurant. Pro Tip: The fish tacos are the best at 81 Fort Salonga Road! 3:00PM | Stop at Lewis Oliver Farm on Burt Ave, they are open daily from 10-4pm. This historic landmark dates back to the mid 1800’s and is a sanctuary to a small family of rescued farm animals. A small donation is requested. 4:00PM | Take a drive down Asharoken Avenue (Northport’s “Dune Road”) a thin strip of land with homes on the bay and sound. 5:30PM | Grab dinner at the gastropub Rockin’ Fish. You have your choice of outdoor or indoor seating, located at 155 Main Street. 7:00PM | Feeling nostalgic? It’s time for homemade local ice cream for dessert at the Northport Sweet Shop, circa 1929. It’s a trip back in time at 55 Main Street! 7:30PM | Get your culture fix at the John Engeman Theater, Long Island’s only year round professional theater. Make sure to get your tickets ahead of time at engemantheater.com. Located at 250 Main Street.


DAY TWO | Destination | South Shore Nassau County 9:00AM | Grab your bike, some water bottles, sunscreen and a change of clothes and hit the road for a day of activity and adventure. 10:00AM | Your first stop is the Jones Beach Bike Trail. Enjoy this scenic mostly flat 5.3 mile trail along the Wantagh Parkway to Jones Beach. Feel the thrill of going over the bridges and enjoy the views of the Great South Bay. This is a car free trail! Remember it’s another 5.3 miles back to the car. The trail starts at Cedar Creek Park 3340 Merrick Rd, Wantagh. Park in first lot and look for the big rock to enter the trail. 12:00PM | Head to Freeport’s Nautical Mile which is a great waterfront strip of restaurants, shops, and charter boats. Grab an outdoor lunch at Otto’s Sea Grill, a landmark for 80 years on the strip. Now it’s time to work off that lunch, test your athleticism at Crow’s Nest Mini Golf on Woodcleff Ave in Freeport. 2:30PM | It’s time to put one foot in front of the other and hike through the Norman J. Levy Plant and Wildlife Sanctuary. The 3 mile trail has 18 exercise stations throughout the walk. At the parks highest point you can enjoy tremendous views of NYC and the Jones Beach Needle - 166 Merrick Rd, Merrick. 4:30PM | Ready for a leisurely stroll through one of Long Island’s best towns? Head to Rockville Centre for some window shopping, and grab a cocktail or coffee at Kasey’s Kitchen Rooftop Bar - 23 North Park Ave, RVC. 7:00PM | Have you read the reviews? Jordon’s Lobster Farm in Island Park is a must for the seafood lover in you. This family owned waterfront restaurant and seafood market has been in business in Brooklyn and Island Park since the 1930’s - 1 Pettit Place, Island Park. 9:00PM | Have a bit more energy left from this invigorating day? Head across the street for some dancing at Pops Seafood Shack where they have live music or a DJ most nights - 15 Railroad Place, Island Park.


DAY 3 | Destination | Garden City Area 10:00AM | Grab the kids, load up the car and head to an educational and fun day in the Garden City area. First stop is the Children’s Museum on Davis Avenue. Here you will find interactive exhibits, live theater and family workshops. Some of the current exhibits are: Hands-On Harley-Davidson “Dream It” “Build It” “Ride It” Bubbles - play and experiment in the enormous bubble room Sound Showers - a world of percussion instruments Climb It - encourages independence, freedom and exploration Feast for Beasts - Live animal habitat Broken? Fix It - Learn to put things back together 1:30 PM | Grab lunch at Mac and Melts at 684 Stewart Avenue. What kid doesn’t love a grilled cheese!? 3:00 PM | Head to the Roosevelt Field Mall (JC Penny Entrance) to Build-A-Bear Workshop. Have your child customize their own stuffed animal from species to wardrobe. 4:00 PM | Next stop is Eisenhower Park for 18 hole mini golf. Choose between Mountainside or Overlook courses or take a swing at the batting cages. Hot day? Not a problem, try the new splash pad at this exciting spray park. 6:00 PM | Dinner Time! Head to Famous Dave’s for some finger lickin’ Bar-B-Que in Westbury. 7:30 PM | End the day with a sporting event at Hofstra’s University’s James M. Shuart Stadium. Choose a soccer game and cheer on the Rough Riders or a Lacrosse game and show your Lizard spirit!


DAY 4 | Destination | Dune Road, Westhampton to Hampton Bays 8:00 AM | Pack up the cooler, beach chair, fishing pole, camera and sunscreen and hit the road! 9:00 AM | 1st stop is a leisurely stroll through the quaint town of Westhampton. Window shop and grab a quick breakfast. 9:30 AM | Enjoy the views of the “Hedges” and the estates that lie behind them as you head to the Jessup Lane Bridge taking you to the famed Dune Road. 9:45 AM | Make a right once over the bridge and you'll feel like you stepped back in time. Check out all the private beach clubs lining the ocean, the Swordfish Club being a favorite. Continue down the road until the very end and arrive at Cupsogue Beach, 906 Dune Rd. 10:00 AM | Enjoy the sugary sand and Caribbean like water on either the bay or ocean at this 296 acre barrier beach. There’s bass fishing, camping, a concession stand and showers. Go for a beach walk and explore this amazing place. 1:30 PM | Feeling famished? Time for lunch at the local’s favorite joint, John Scott’s Surf Shack 540 Dune Rd Westhampton. Located just a few minutes from the beach, heading east on Dune Rd. If you are lucky, you will get some live music with your outdoor lunch. 3:00 PM | Time to check out the “Beach Houses of Dune Road”. Take it slow as you cruise Dune Rd and decide which Beach Estate is your favorite. Do you prefer an oceanfront or a Bayfront? Decisions, decisions… 3:30 PM | Time to paddle the Shinecock Bay! Rent a kayak or paddle board at Captain Kayak located at Dockers Marina, 94 Dune Rd, East Quogue. There's no better way to see the amazing beach houses and life on the water. 5:00 PM | Last stop of the day! Continue down Dune Rd to the end. Park the car and walk the jetty, watching the boats coming through the channel. Across the way you’ll see the campsite in Southampton! Work up an appetite yet? Head across the parking lot to Oakland’s Restaurant and Marina 365 Dine Rd, Hampton Bays and enjoy a fabulous lobster dinner as you watch the sunset and discuss your beach house purchase.


DAY 5 | Destination | Babylon 8:00AM | Get an early start to your day and head over to one of the Babylon Ocean Beaches. Visit the Salt Shack at Cedar Beach, ride the waves at Gilgo (surf cam available), or book a half day fishing charter at Captree. Parking fees apply. 12:30PM | Head into town and have lunch at one of Babylon’s outdoor dining spaces. Grab tacos at Swell Taco or Del Fuego, or sit on the patio for some brick oven pizza and sangria at Molto Vino. 2:00PM | Take in some of the town’s history at the Town of Babylon History Museum (free admission) or walk around and enjoy some of the town’s boutique shops. 3:30PM | Enjoy some of the great outdoors. Walk along the Lake at Argyle, bike through the trails at Southard’s, or rent a paddle boat at Belmont Lake State Park. 5:30PM | Go out for an evening paddle with South Shore Paddleboards, or even try to catch one of their floating yoga sessions on the bay. 6:30PM | Refuel at one of Babylon’s many restaurants. Grab a meal at Horace and Sylvia’s, small plates at Barrique, or pub food at the Post Office Cafe. 8:00PM | End the day with cocktails at the Brixton, beers at the Villager, or catch the DJ at the Carriage House.

Day 6 | Destination | Oyster Bay & Bayville 10:00AM | Load up the car and head to Planting Fields Arboretum for a stroll through the gardens of this gold coast estate ($8 per car). 11:30AM | Stop at Sagamore Hill For a Quick History Lesson on Theodore Roosevelt and his summer white house (walking the grounds is free | tour of house $10). 1:00PM | Head over the bridge to Bayville for a beautiful lunch overlooking the water at Walls Wharf or The Crescent Beach Club. 2:30PM | Ready to get your adrenaline pumping? Head to the Bayville Adventure Park with things to do for all ages - mini golf, rock climbing, water slides and so much more. For those that have no fear, check out the ropes course and don’t forget to stroll across the street and put your toes in the sand while you’re there. 5:00PM | Time to head back over the bridge and stroll through the quaint town of Oyster Bay. Stop in at Oyster Bay Brewing Company and sample one of their IPA’s or browse in a few of the town’s shops. 6:00PM | Choose one of the many restaurants in town to satisfy your appetite - Wild Honey, Canterbury’s Oyster Bar and Grill and 2 Spring Street are a few great options. 7:30PM | The day isn’t complete until you check out the Oyster Bay music scene.
