Equipment- Minor Hockey has full sets of equipment to rent for the season. Experienced adults will help you with fitting and answer all your questions about “how hockey works.” Sign up at the All Sports Registration Day (September 14) or contact Clearwater & District Minor Hockey Association.
The most important is that the kids are out having fun with their friends and getting the exercise they need.

Raft Mountain Skating Club
Registration opens August 29
Raft Mountain Skating Club is a local non-profit club that was established in 1975, operated by volunteers. The club offers programs taught by a certified coach to all levels and ages of skaters. The figure skating program offers opportunities for skaters of all ages in the Clearwater District and surrounding areas to develop fundamental skating skills. There are 3 levels within the skating program: CanSkate Preschool, CanSkate and STARSkate. All levels are led by an NCCP certified professional coach. CanSkate Preschool and CanSkate levels are taught in a group format. STARSkate may provide instruction in short group sessions, but is primarily offered in private or semi-private lessons. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized testing system. We hope that by introducing the skills of skating at a young age in a fun and positive environment, these individuals will be active and healthy and continue to advance and learn skills that will allow them to participate in skating for life whether it is figure skating, hockey or just recreational skating for fun! Skating starts in September and runs until March. During the year, the STAR Skaters will attend a test day and one or two competitions. The club presents a year end Carnival to showcase the skills all the skaters have learned. Photo credits: Indigo Thyme Imagery

CURLING
Wells Gray Curling Club Curling is a team sport, played by two teams of four players each on a rectangular sheet of ice. Curling is a great way to get out of the house, meet old friends and make new ones. Venue: North Thompson Sportsplex Period: Two sessions end of October to December and January to March; or you can play both seasons. League play: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights from 7–9pm. Equipment: Curling shoes and brooms, new curlers can borrow from the club. Age: 13 years and over. Join either as an individual or make a team with your friends. New players are always welcome.

Hello hockey fans,
Simply put, hockey is Canada’s game. It is a game that brings us together as Canadians, from the frozen pond to the community rink. It is a game that helps us grow not only as players, but as people, teaching us teamwork, how to win (and how to lose) and respect—respect for the game, for ourselves and for our fellow players. As part of that respect, Hockey Canada has worked hard to eliminate head contact from the game, preventing concussions and keeping players on the ice. For us, keeping players safe is just as important as teaching players to skate, pass and shoot.
To help in the prevention of concussions, Hockey Canada has created a concussion app, giving players, parents, coaches and volunteers instant access to concussion symptoms and information on how to manage a concussion. Check out www.hockeycanada.ca/apps, download the app and help keep our game safe. Thank you for your passion for our game, and we’ll see you on the ice! Sincerely, Hockey Canada
Be concussion smart. Don’t learn about concussions the hard way.
Your brain is the most important organ in your body, and it is yours for life. Protect your most valuable asset and wear a helmet when you are participating in various sports.
How to fit your helmet: • Every helmet should be CSA approved and be easily adjustable. It should rest half an inch above the eyebrow. • The chin strap should fit snugly under the chin; if more than one finger fits between the strap and the chin, the helmet is too loose. It is recommended, especially for younger children, to have a face mask on your helmet. This will help prevent damage to teeth, chin and mouth, common injuries in skating. BIKE HELMET
Provides protection, but not recommended for skating.

Community Recreation Healthy Living Program (CRHL) 10 Tips to Living Well and Feeling Great The District of Clearwater offers an array of Recreation and Healthy Living Programming to keep everyone active and involved in the community. Throughout the year the District of Clearwater offers a wide variety of sports and leisure activities for community members of all ages and stages of life. Here are 10 tips to help inspire you to live a healthy and balanced life, and feel great while doing it. 1. Eat Clean and Eat Often. The cleaner you eat the better you’ll feel but this doesn’t mean missing out on your favourite foods! Eat what you love in moderation and feed yourself small meals throughout the day to rev up your metabolism and burn major calories. 2. Stay Hydrated. Your body will thank you. 3. Get Enough Rest this means sleeping 7–8 hours a night. Our body does most of its recovery during sleep. The more you let your body recharge, the better you’re going to feel. 4. Move Your Body Regularly. Lift weights, hike, swim, dance… Stay active doing something you enjoy! 5. Discover Your Passion. Find what you love and pursue it 100%. These include any hobbies or activities that you find fun and that make you happy.
18
6. Set Goals. Make sure they’re attainable and check in periodically to make sure you’re on track. Goals create direction, motivation and purpose.
7. Create an Awesome Support Team. Be with the people who bring out the best in you and let go of those who bring you down. A positive mind makes for a positive life. 8. Your Time is Valuable. If something doesn’t bring anything positive to your life, it doesn’t deserve your time. 9. Exercise Because You Love Your Body, Not Because You Hate It. Fitness should be something you GET to do, rather than something you HAVE to do. Find activities you enjoy and make you feel good, and then do them! 10. Be Social! Connect with others and maintain a healthy network of family and friends.

GYMNASTICS SCHEDULE
The District of Clearwater’s Community Recreation, Healthy Living program is excited to announce that we are taking on the recreational gymnastics program! What are the benefits of gymnastics? Gymnastics is a good foundation sport because it increases strength, flexibility, coordination and body awareness which is beneficial for all sports. As well, gymnasts are very good at both static and dynamic balance and learn early how to fall without injuring themselves. Participants will learn skills on a balance beam, bars, floor, vault and mini-tramp in a safe, fun environment.

A little bit about Keiran… My name is Keiran Jones and I was born and raised in Clearwater. I enjoy outdoor activities, as well as wood working, landscaping, cooking and building major Lego projects. My community involvement includes volunteering with our local Farmer’s Market and helping out with Clearwater’s Youth Group. I enjoyed training as a young teen in our local gymnastics program under Jill McMillan, a wonderfully talented gymnastics coach who encouraged me tremendously.
I went on to complete the Level One gymnastics certification two years ago, and am looking forward to a future continuing to coach the youth of Clearwater. My goal is for the students to not only learn new gymnastics skills, but to grow in their personal confidence levels. As a coach, I strive to work with each youth individually, meeting them where they are at, and bringing them forward at their own pace, while in a fun, safe environment.

Farm to School to Food Bank Program The spring of the 2016 school year has brought about BIG things for this project! The more this program “grows,” the more our students are learning about where healthy food comes from! And one thing we have learned along the way, if they grow it, they WILL eat it! • Garden design finalized and raised boxes were built with CSS shop classes • “Fresh to You” fundraiser selling BC grown fruits and veggies raised funds that were used to help fund the CSS school garden (we even ordered extra to donate to the Food Bank) • Relocated the garden shed and greenhouse to CSS grounds • Students from both schools attended a Farm to School celebration and sharing day in Kamloops where they made a presentation about our local project and learned about what other schools are doing • Boxes filled with donated soil and manure • Expanded the program at CSS to include an indoor light system to grow micro-greens to use in smoothies and other healthy lunches for students
• Students planted garden boxes at both CSS and Raft River Elementary • Fencing at CSS! • Watering system and timers installed at both schools
Plans for the fall of 2016: • Fall harvest by students • “Harvest Soup” to be cooked and eaten with Raft River Elementary students • Celebration BBQ at CSS for students and families, organizations, businesses and volunteers who helped with Farm to School project • CSS Foods students will learn how to preserve salsa, make jam, freeze veggies, etc… • Vegetables grown will be used in the CSS Foods program for cooking and baking • CSS Foods program has again committed to make and serve vegetable dishes at the CSS PAC annual turkey lunch, feeding the entire school as well as members of our community • Veggies will again be utilized to bake muffins for Raft River Elementary’s free breakfast program • Extra veggies go to our local Food Bank
Once again we would like to point out that the success of this initiative is in a large way due to the many organizations and volunteers who continue to support the growth of this project. Clearwater Secondary School, Raft River Elementary and the District of Clearwater’s Community Recreation, Healthy Living program wish to thank United Way, North Thompson Communities Foundation, McLennan Farms, Borrow Enterprises, Cal’s Corner, Ken Matheson, Sharon Neufeld, Raft River Elementary PAC, CSS PAC, Yellowhead Community Services, Wadlegger’s Mill, Mike’s Plants, Wells Gray Community Forest , SD 73 maintenance crew, and all of the teachers, students, administration and community volunteers who continue to contribute their time and energy. One more big thank you goes out to Stacia Panko and Cassidy Redman for the beautiful job designing and painting the “Sunflower Stained Glass” mural on the CSS garden shed. It looks absolutely gorgeous!

Tips to keeping your Septic Healthy! Wastewater from the house flows into the tank, the heavy solids settle to the bottom of the tank forming a layer of sludge. Grease and light solids stay on the top forming a scum layer. Natural bacteria work to break down both layers, however, not all will break down with bacteria. This creates the need for regular cleaning of the septic tank. The separated wastewater in the middle layer of the tank is pushed out into the drainfield as more wastewater enters the tank. If the wastewater doesn’t remain in the septic tank long enough, it doesn’t have time to separate and solids can be carried out into the drainfield, eventually causing the field to plug up. Regular maintenance is the key to a healthy and long lasting septic system. On average a regular household with

an 800 gallon tank (with 3 people ) should be cleaned out every 2.5 years. If you have a garbage disposal, even more often. The cost of not taking care of your system is significantly higher than the fees to clean it on a regular basis. To replace the average system will cost a homeowner anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000. Backup of septic into your home can also be very costly. It will ruin carpets, drywall, framing and can cause moulds to grow and your home to become unsafe. The best time of year to pump the tank is Summer or early Fall. This gives the tank time to re-establish the bacteria before cold weather hits. The cost of pumping your system in the winter months is significantly higher and has an impact on your system should you have a problem during cold weather.

How your septic system works: There are two main parts to your septic system:
1) tank and 2) drainfield DO’S: • Know the location of the tank and drainfield. Keep a sketch handy with your maintenance records. • Have your tank pumped out whenever it is appropriate for your system. • Keep the tank lid accessible, as well as the inspection ports. Use a riser if necessary. • Conserve water to avoid overloading the system-especially in high water table areas. • Divert other sources of water away from the septic system.
DON’T: • • • •
Drive or park on the tank or drainfield. Plant anything except grass on your drainfield. Dig in or build on top of your drainfield. Use your toilet to dispose of harmful chemicals or cleaners. They will kill the bacteria. • Allow backwash from home water softeners to enter the septic system.
