Raft Mountain Skating Club Raft Mountain Skating Club is a local non-profit club that was established in 1975, operated by volunteers. The club offers programs taught by a certified coach to all levels and ages of skaters. The figure skating program offers opportunities for skaters of all ages in the Clearwater District and surrounding areas to develop fundamental skating skills. There are 3 levels within the skating program: CanSkate Preschool, CanSkate and STARSkate. All levels are led by an NCCP certified professional coach. CanSkate Preschool and CanSkate levels are taught in a group format. STARSkate may provide instruction in short group sessions, but is primarily offered in private or semi-private lessons. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized testing system. We hope that by introducing the skills of skating at a young age in a fun and positive environment, these individuals will be active and healthy and continue to advance and learn skills that will allow them to participate in skating for life whether it is figure skating, hockey or just recreational skating for fun! Skating starts in September and runs until March. During the year, the STAR Skaters will attend a test day and one or two competitions. The club presents a year end Carnival to showcase the skills all the skaters have learned. Photo credits: Clearwater Times

CURLING
Wells Gray Curling Club Curling is a team sport, played by two teams of four players each on a rectangular sheet of ice. The teams take turns sliding polished stones down the ice toward a target called ‘house’. The final positions of the stones or rocks determine the score for each end of play. Curling is a great way to get out of the house, meet old friends and make new ones. Photo credit: Clearwater Times

Take a play break 1. Join a social league; just because you are not pursuing sport as a career path does not mean you have to leave it all together. There are many recreation leagues in the area; slopitch, badminton, ice hockey, ball hockey, soccer and basketball. This is a great way to stay active and have fun.

2. Now that you have developed your physical literacy skills try some less traditional sports that might challenge you. We live in an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise; you can literally be at the top of a mountain in the morning and out on the lake in the afternoon. Try a guided hike or introductory lesson and get out there. 13

Wear a Helmet.
Don’t learn about concussions the hard way. Your brain is the most important organ in your body, and it is yours for life. Protect your most valuable asset and wear a helmet when you are participating in various sports.
How to fit your helmet: • Every helmet should be CSA approved and be easily adjustable. It should rest half an inch above the eyebrow.
For a proper fitting of your hockey helmets speak with Roger at the Sportsplex 250.674.2143
• The chin strap should fit snugly under the chin; if more than one finger fits between the strap and the chin, the helmet is too loose. It is recommended, especially for younger children, to have a face mask on your helmet. This will help prevent damage to teeth, chin and mouth, common injuries in skating. BIKE HELMET
Provides protection, but not recommended for skating.

Community Recreation Healthy Living Program (CRHL) Have you ever thought about the things around you that make up your quality of life—such as your home, neighbours, family and friends, the park down the street, the food you eat, your job, which area of the community you live in or the activities you participate in? Whether you are new to this community or lived here your entire life, there are a variety of opportunities for you to get engaged in to help support or improve your quality of life. The District of Clearwater’s Community Recreation, Healthy Living Program works with many organizations with a focus on bringing people together and addressing the needs of the community. Classes are offered ranging in activities from fitness to food preserving and everything in between. This season, make a pledge to yourself and your family to live a healthier, more active lifestyle. Try something new whether it be exploring trails, a fitness class, or volunteering with the food bank. 18
Do you have an idea for a program or workshop you’d like to offer through the CRHL program? The District of Clearwater would love to hear about it! Where do you start? Start by developing a clear vision for the program, including a title, objectives, a brief description and requirements for your space and equipment. Once you’ve got an idea, submit the program outline along with your resume and copies of any relevant certifications to the District of Clearwater Office, or email to: healthyliving@docbc.ca The District of Clearwater wishes to thank the Wells Gray Community Forest and the United Way for their continued support in the Community Recreation Healthy Living Programs. HOW CAN FAMILIES SUPPORT HEALTHY ACTIVE LIVING? 1. Set limits on how much time your children and teens spend watching TV, playing video games, and surfing the internet —no more than one to two hours a day. The Canadian Pediatric Society discourages screen-based activities (TV, video games, hand-held devices, etc) for children under age 2. 2. Playing organized sports, such as being on a soccer or hockey team, is not enough to keep children and youth healthy. Encourage your child or teen to be active every day. Walking or cycling to a friend’s house, skipping rope, or playing in a neighbourhood park or playground are all great options. 3. If you drive your children to school, try walking or biking with them instead. 4. Get your child involved in activities around the house: carrying the groceries, raking leaves, or shoveling snow. 5. Be sure activities are safe. Children and youth should wear protective equipment for activities like cycling, skating, skateboarding, soccer, and other physical activities. 6. And last but not least… be an active role model!
1. All registrations are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. 2. A registration is not complete until payment is received in full. 3. Pre-registration is required for all classes except when specified as a drop in class. 4. The District of Clearwater reserves the right to cancel any programs. 5. Prices are subject to change. 6. An administration fee of $25 will be charged on all non-sufficient funds (NSF) payments.
GST Fees in this guide do not include taxes. GST will be applied where applicable.
REFUND POLICY: Refunds will be issued in the following circumstances: 1. We had to cancel: If a minimum number of registrants are not met, we may have to cancel or combine classes due to insufficient registration. These decisions are made prior to the program start date. Please register early to avoid disappointment. A 100% refund is granted when we cancel a program. 2. Extended Illness/Injury: In cases of extended illness or injury, a prorated refund or credit may be granted upon provision of a medical note. 3. Missed classes: Classes missed due to sickness, vacation or other reasons will not be refunded or credited.

A little bit about Stacey…My name is Stacey and I have recently moved to Clearwater from my home town, the sunny little fishing town of Sooke, BC on Southern Vancouver Island. I love the outdoors, health, wellness, gardening, good people, great food and wine! I am also passionately embracing a lifestyle of sustainability both personally and professionally. I am so glad my life path has not only led me to sharing Yoga and Pilates with people, but I am thrilled to bring my teaching to Clearwater. I am confident that not only do I have much to offer, but this town has much to offer me as well. Thank you to everyone I have met for being so welcoming and making me feel at home!

Farm to School to Food Bank Program The Farm to School program is growing! Coordinated through Clearwater Secondary School and the District of Clearwater’s Community Recreation, Healthy Living program, this initiative has been successful due to the support received by various individuals and organizations. United Way, North Thompson Communities Foundation, Sharon Neufeld, Raft River Elementary School and their PAC, Clearwater Secondary School and their PAC, Yellowhead Community Services and a long list of teachers, students, administration and community volunteers who have contributed their time and energy generously to this program. The goal is to expose children and youth to learning and understanding about where their food comes from. Beginning with choosing vegetables they wish to grow, germinating the seeds, prepping the ground for planting, planting seedlings in the garden, watering, weeding, harvesting, preparing
and preserving the food grown, and everyone’s favourite… eating! Plans for this fall’s crop include soup making, preserving salsa, pickling carrots, baking with zucchini, and much more! Any excess food will be donated to our local food bank. The Fall of 2015 will see big changes for the garden space, currently a shared space located at Forest House Wellness is being used. Thanks to grants received, funds donated, volunteers, SD 73 teachers, the grounds and maintenance staff, both Raft River Elementary School and Clearwater Secondary School will be starting gardens at each school in the coming year. This is very exciting, as it allows for students and teachers to have easier access to what they are growing on a daily basis, therefore keeping classes (students) more engaged in the program. A huge thank you goes out to all who have contributed to the amazing success of this very worthwhile community project!

Tips to keeping your Septic Healthy! Wastewater from the house flows into the tank, the heavy solids settle to the bottom of the tank forming a layer of sludge. Grease and light solids stay on the top forming a scum layer. Natural bacteria work to break down both layers, however, not all will break down with bacteria. This creates the need for regular cleaning of the septic tank. The separated wastewater in the middle layer of the tank is pushed out into the drainfield as more wastewater enters the tank. If the wastewater doesn’t remain in the septic tank long enough, it doesn’t have time to separate and solids can be carried out into the drainfield, eventually causing the field to plug up. Regular maintenance is the key to a healthy and long lasting septic system. On average a regular household with
an 800 gallon tank (with 3 people ) should be cleaned out every 2.5 years. If you have a garbage disposal, even more often. The cost of not taking care of your system is significantly higher than the fees to clean it on a regular basis. To replace the average system will cost a homeowner anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000. Backup of septic into your home can also be very costly. It will ruin carpets, drywall, framing and can cause moulds to grow and your home to become unsafe. The best time of year to pump the tank is Summer or early Fall. This gives the tank time to re-establish the bacteria before cold weather hits. The cost of pumping your system in the winter months is significantly higher and has an impact on your system should you have a problem during cold weather.
How your septic system works: There are two main parts to your septic system:
1) tank and 2) drainfield DO’S: • Know the location of the tank and drainfield. Keep a sketch handy with your maintenance records. • Have your tank pumped out whenever it is appropriate for your system. • Keep the tank lid accessible, as well as the inspection ports. Use a riser if necessary. • Conserve water to avoid overloading the system-especially in high water table areas. • Divert other sources of water away from the septic system.
DON’T: • • • •
Drive or park on the tank or drainfield. Plant anything except grass on your drainfield. Dig in or build on top of your drainfield. Use your toilet to dispose of harmful chemicals or cleaners. They will kill the bacteria. • Allow backwash from home water softeners to enter the septic system.
