A Message from the Regional Director I am appreciative of the outpouring of love and support throughout the Fall Cluster season. Over 3,000 sorors were in attendance at the conferences; that was a milestone which gives me pride and optimism. Your enthusiasm is commendable, Sorors, and it illustrates your passion for the beloved sisterhood; and your desire to stay abreast of new initiatives and enhance your knowledge of chapter operations and procedures. With much passion and care, plans are being made for the 62nd South Atlantic Regional Conference in Orlando, Florida. Registration materials will be released in January. Your attendance is anticipated, and we promise to make your regional conference experience informative, funfilled and most memorable. Regional Committees have been appointed and are eagerly waiting to serve you. Please pay close attention to the information shared by the South Atlantic International Committee Representatives, and view the Members Only Section of the SAR Website often.
Happy New Year, Sorors of the Significant South Atlantic Region! It is time for renewal and rejuvenation as we launch the dynamic new program of the sorority's new administration under the inspired leadership of Madame Supreme Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson. Sorors, I requested that you join me as "Promisekeepers" and that you have exhibited from all perspectives. You have upheld the ideals and purpose of our sisterhood by implementing the program target areas of Education, Health Promotions, Family Strengthening, Environmental Ownership and Global Impact with a special focus on "ASCEND," in our International Program, "Launching New Dimensions of Service." You have executed the initiatives with the exuberance and enthusiasm they merit. Chapters were encouraged to Pre-launch the new International Program, and I commend you for what you have done thus far.
The overwhelming number of articles and information submitted by chapters to the Regional Communications Committee is a testament to your performance and involvement in rendering service. The aim is to publish as many articles as we possibly can; therefore, I encourage your patience and your continued submission of articles from your chapter. Congratulations are extended to the newest Alpha Kappa Alpha Chapter, Psi Omega Omega, in Peachtree Corners, Georgia. We celebrate the perseverance of these seventy compassionate members, who are 2

International Standards Committee Standards: Exceeding Expectations of Excellence (#E) Soror Giselé M. Casanova, Chairman Soror Ora Douglass, South Atlantic Regional Representative
The theme for the 2014-2016 International Standards Committee is “Exceeding Expectations of Excellence (#E3).” We know that Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority chapters strive to operate at a level of excellence. Your International Standards Committee wants to ensure that all chapters will EXCEED our Expectations of Excellence. In order to do so, each year chapters are required to submit their Standards 2014 End of Year (EOY) Report no later than December 31. In order to recognize chapter excellence, the “S.T.A.R.” (Standing Tall Among Regions) award has been created. To be eligible for “S.T.A.R.” recognition, chapters must: 1) have at least 60% participation in completing the chapter selfassessment; 2) have correctly completed and turned in their Standards EOY Report by December 31st; and 3) have turned in to the Regional Director all other End of Year reports by the designated due dates. Award recognition will take place at our 2015 regional conferences. A goal of the International Standards Committee is to evaluate all chapters during the “Launching New Dimensions of Service” administration in order to ensure effective chapter operations. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Evaluation Team (AKA E-Team) will evaluate chapter compliance starting during the 2015 Undergraduate Round Ups and Cluster Retreats. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Investigation Team (AKA ITeam) is charged with conducting prompt, fair and objective fact finding investigations. Your International Standards Committee is here to serve you! We want every soror to be engaged, empowered, energized, and to Exceed Alpha Kappa Kappa’s Expectations for Excellence!

Furthermore, the Protocol committee strives to preserve the sorority’s positive public image and makes every Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority experience better for everyone. International Membership Committee “Membership Makes Me S.M.I.L.E.” Soror, Vanessa Rogers-Long, Chairman Soror Kimberly Willis Green, South Atlantic Regional Representative Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is the premier Greek-letter organization in the world founded by and for African American women. We are committed to nurturing, developing and promoting continuous lifelong membership. Therefore, we know that Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Sisterhood is Multidimensional. We strengthen our bond of sisterhood by discovering and sharing Innovative ways to retain members in our chapters. We emphasize Lifelong membership by Engaging in mentoring for undergraduates, graduates, and new members embraced in the larger circle of our sisterhood for the first time. All of these attributes inspired the theme for the 2014-2018 International Membership Committee: “Membership Makes Me S.M.I.L.E.” As your International Membership Committee works diligently to serve you over the next four years, our framework for membership is aligned with Supreme Basileus Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson’s vision “Launching New Dimensions of Service.” As we are reminded that Sisterhood is Multidimensional, Innovative, Lifelong and Engaging, we want you to smile and get excited about membership! Over the next two years, we will focus on the Membership Intake Process (MIP) and mentoring. The Undergraduate Membership Intake Process is currently under review with major revisions are on the horizon to simplify the initial paperwork submission. By now, all active members should have received an electronic survey to provide input on the current Membership Intake Process for graduate and undergraduate members. Your feedback is very important to us. Additional input will be solicited during the 2015 regional conferences with a goal of bringing forth recommended changes during the 2016 regional conferences and Boule. When the Membership Intake Process ends, mentoring begins. The sorority’s mentoring manual has been revised to reflect the new administration’s emphasis on enhancing mentoring in all chapters. The new manual entitled Mentoring: A New Dimension of Lifelong Membership is included in the fall mailing. The new manual provides suggestions on designing a mentoring program, with activities your chapter may implement. Each chapter is encouraged to establish a mentoring program in January 2015. We are asking all Chapter Basilei to appoint a Mentoring Committee Chairman and establish a committee to ensure that the mentoring program is a significant part of the chapter's plan. Alpha Kappa Alpha Mentoring Goals: 1. To encourage sorors to grow personally and professionally and increase their leadership capabilities 2. To promote a learning environment that will encourage sorors to embrace a responsibility for the protection of the Sorority and its culture, history and physical properties 3. To communicate to sorors the seriousness of the vows and the commitment they carry by developing relationships based on caring sharing and the transfer of knowledge 4. To enrich the membership experience of sorors through the establishment of an internal support system focused on continuous learning within Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® 5. Beta Zeta Omega Celebrates 80 Years Orangeburg, SC – Sorors of Orangeburg, SC, painted the town pink as they hosted an affair that launched celebrations for the holiday season. An 80th Celebration Gala, “A Pink Carpet Affair”, was held on December 5th at The Cinema to culminate the year’s activities and to commemorate the 80th chartering of Beta Zeta Omega Chapter. The chapter has the distinction of being the first graduate chapter of any other sorority for Negro college women to be established in the state of South Carolina. Initiatives, accomplishments, and the vital role that Beta Zeta Omega’s activism has played in the community of Orangeburg, South Carolina and beyond, since 1934 were also celebrated. As a precursor to the event, a half-page article was featured in the local newspaper, The Times and Democrat, on November 23, to apprise the community about the sorority and chapter’s past and present programs. Included in the article were glimpses of initiatives from the early years of the chapter to the current international theme, “Launching New Dimensions of Service.” All in attendance feasted on a delicious, plated meal, followed by an inspiring champagne toast to salute the chapter’s 80 years of service. The affair culminated with a dance featuring live entertainment. Sorors and guests danced, mixed and mingled, reminisced about good times, and renewed friendships. This was the event not to be missed as attendees enjoyed themselves. Soror Cheryl D. McMichael serves as chapter basileus. Sorors Debra Watson Norman, Clay Sandra D. Ray and Lana E. Sigma Epsilon Om ega Celebrates HBCU Week Warner Robins, GA - Sigma Epsilon Omega Chapter celebrated HBCU Awareness Week in September as well as the month of October. Twenty-five HBCUs are represented in Sigma Epsilon Omega and we are making sure that everyone knows about us. We wore our HBCU paraphernalia/colors to our September Chapter Meeting/Annual Chapter Retreat. Our “cheerleader” started off with the roll call calling out each HBCU and those members from that school stood and yelled out to be recognized. The moment was captured in a chapter photo which was posted on Facebook. Continuing the celebration, we wore our HBCU paraphernalia to chapter meeting, took another chapter picture and posted it on Facebook. Many members are now sporting our HBCU shirts and the popular “HBCU GRAD” tee shirt. We have budgeted a specific amount for scholarships to be allocated for HBCU students beginning in 2015. Several chapter members are members of the local school alumni chapters and hope to form some collaborative efforts. A different HBCU is featured in our monthly newsletter. The members from each school provide information/historical facts along with photos taken through the years. Also featured in the November newsletter is the school Homecomings. SEO is very excited about Think HBCU and we’ve only just begun to celebrate.
Kappa Eta Omega Celebrates 40 Years Valdosta, GA - Kappa Eta Omega Chapter celebrated 40 years of sisterhood and service to the South Georgia/North Florida area in September. For more than 40 years Kappa Eta Omega has been a pillar in the community serving through its service projects and our sorority’s program thrusts. Several chapter members were recognized for their role in the chapter’s growth and perpetuity, including the 15 charter members, the first group to be initiated into the chapter, and members who served as Basileus. Since its charter was established in June 1974, Kappa Eta Omega has grown to about 125 talented Alpha Kappa Alpha women who excel as educators, business women, and community leaders. Carla D. Williams, Basileus envisioned this timely celebration, and Creasy Sermons and Carolyn Burgess served as the celebration committee chairmen. Approximately, 300 members and their guests enjoyed a program replete with activity. Mayor ProTem, City Councilman Alvin Payton, brought the proclamation from the City of Valdosta declaring the day “Kappa Eta Omega Day in Valdosta.” Congratulatory remarks were given by representatives from other members of the Divine Nine and the local chapter of the National Council of Negro Women, as well as House of Representative Member, Dexter Sharper, District 177. Honorees were given pearl bracelets with gold KEO charms. Deceased charter members were remembered with a candle lighting by sorority members and family members. Pi Delta O mega Hosts Our Vote Matters Event Miami, FL – On October 5, 2014, the Social Justice and Human Rights Committee of Pi Delta Omega Chapter hosted an “Our Votes Matter” phone banking event in collaboration with the Florida New Majority and Urban Miami. Calls were made to registered voters in Miami Dade County to ask about issues that are important to them, and remind them to vote during early voting, or the general election on November 4, 2014. The midterm elections in Florida 2014 are often overlooked, particularly in minority communities, because the election of local officials is overshadowed by presidential election years. Local legislature more directly affects our communities, jobs, and schools. The midterm elections are equally, if not more important. 40
