SECOND ACT

TRAVELS AZALEA FESTIVAL, CHARLESTON, MO

WELL READ,

WELL-FED ME Southern Illinois Healthcare’s 2018 Well-Fed Me booklet invites you to think about the whole person when it comes to a healthful new year. With content ranging from the benefits of a Mediterranean-inspired lifestyle to what you need to know about the new blood pressure guidelines issued by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, this information-rich publication can help you become more active – and proactive – in your own health and wellness. According to the World Health Organization, at least 80% of all heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes, along with 40% of all cancers, could be prevented through meaningful diet and lifestyle changes. These are significant numbers and deserve an equally significant amount of consideration no matter where you find yourself on the wellness spectrum. Well-Fed Me is designed to allow you to start wherever you are most comfortable and work to improve from there. After all, better health is not a sprint; it’s a marathon and each step forward marks your own path to a healthier you.

MINDFUL EATING

THIS VALENTINE'S DAY

Mindful eating is all about slowing down, engaging your senses and enjoying your food. Here's a variation on one of the most common mindful eating exercises created by John Kabat-Zinn; the "raisin exercise."

Although popular love songs might tell you otherwise, a broken heart can’t kill you – but heart disease can. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.

ONE BITE AT A TIME

1. Step away from your phone, computer and television. 2. Get one raisin (or another small piece of food, like a small piece of dark chocolate or a roasted pumpkin seed) and begin by examining it with your eyes and touch; look at the wrinkles and notice the sticky, soft textures. 3. Next, bring the raisin to your nose to explore the scent. Pause to consider the thoughts that enter your mind or feelings that emerge. If your mind begins to wander, acknowledge your thoughts then bring your attention back to the raisin. 4. Lastly, put the raisin in your mouth and study the flavors you notice. How does the raisin feel as you chew it? What else do you observe? The raisin exercise is a deliberate practice of mindful eating to get yourself used to the process, but the idea is to use these strategies in your daily life with each meal.

GIVE YOUR HEART SOME LOVE

You might not be able to avoid Cupid’s arrow, but you can take steps to lower your risks and prevent heart disease. Start by scheduling an appointment with your doctor to discuss whether you’re at risk for heart disease. Medicare will cover a cardiovascular screening at no cost to you every 5 years. The screening includes tests to help detect heart disease early and measures cholesterol blood fat (lipids), and triglyceride levels. If you and your doctor discover that you’re at risk for a heart attack or stroke, there are steps you can take to help prevent these conditions. February is American Heart Month, and a healthy heart is the best Valentine’s Day gift you could ever give yourself, or the people who love you. For more information about Medicare coverage or enrollment, contact our Medicare counselor at Southern Illinois Healthcare, The Place, by calling 877.480.4040. Source: The Medicare Blog
