MISSION SBA’s mission is to partner with families in order to provide an environment of academic excellence with a Biblical worldview, which is conducive to developing educated young people of character, while preparing them to represent our Lord Jesus Christ in all walks of life.
VISION SBA’s vision is to impact our world by preparing students to become Godly warriors, as we implement Discipleship (Mt. 28:15–20), expect Excellence (1 Cor. 10:31), and encourage Integrity (Psalm 15).
Dear Silverdale Baptist Academy Families & Supporters, It is my privilege to introduce to you the Head of School Annual Report for the 20182019 school year. What an incredible year it was at Silverdale. We recently achieved the status of an ACSI Exemplary School. Less than 3% of schools in the world can claim exemplary status! God is good. His hand and His provision were evident throughout the entire year. Students came to know Christ in record numbers and the average of our national test scores, schoolwide, placed our students’ academic performance among the top 15 percent and higher of students in the United States! To God be the glory. This Head of School Report will be one filled with information on a large variety of new initiatives, changes, additions and developments. From our humble beginnings of 6 students to our current enrollment of over 1,100, we find ourselves with great opportunities before us for new ideas that will accommodate and promote our growth and our development. With every change, the plumb line of our original mission and vision has been our guiding force and will remain so. I hope you will take a moment to look around our campus and witness the handiwork of God as our Silverdale Center continues to literally rise from the ground under the direction of our competent architects and contractors. We love your children. Thank you for entrusting them to us for their Christian Education. For the Academy,
Becky Hansard Head of School “As for me, this is my covenant with them, “ says the Lord. “My spirit, Who is on you, will not depart from you, and My words that I have put in your mouth will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants - from this time on and forever,” says the Lord. - Isaiah 59:21 Silverdale Baptist Academy 3

Gala Recap The 2018 College GameDay Gala was a wonderful night of tailgate-style fellowship as we raised funds for The Silverdale Center and Need-Based Financial Assistance for our families! Guests came dressed in their favorite college football team’s colors, were served a variety of tasty fan-food, and leveraged their passion and competitive spirit to raise nearly $100,000! As always, the silent auction was filled with incredible custom gift basket creations from each of our grade levels and bidders were active right down to the final seconds that items were available. David Karnes played auctioneer for the live portion of the evening, which was filled with laughter and friendly competition. It was a great event! Silverdale Baptist Academy 5

Q: What are some of your most favorite Silverdale memories?
Q: What are some of the major lessons you’ve taken with you?
A: I had the privilege of going to school at Silverdale during some pretty cool transitional times, so one the few big ones that come to mind is getting to be one of the captains for the football team during our very first game on our new home football field. Until then, my whole high school career had been spent playing at a field in the Washington Hills area. Being able to play on “our” field for the first time was something truly special. Athletics aside, my Senior trip to Mexico was just such an all-around cool experience. Getting to travel abroad and experience new cultures and new activities with some of my favorite people was just like sensory overload at the time. What makes me smile the most about my time at Silverdale was the small moments of genuine interaction with not only my peers, but my coaches, my teachers, and everyone within the Silverdale family that made each day something great.
A: A major lesson I took away from high school IS to understand that all moments, no matter how small, count. Life is about relationships. Christ literally called us to be disciples of His word, and therefore doing your best to allow each interaction you have with someone be fruitful. It’s so easy to take people and our time with people for granted, so just being mindful of how intentional you live your life is pretty important, and then also understanding that perception is not always reality. There were plenty of moments in and out of the classroom that were so easy for me to write off, just because my perception of it was that it wasn’t for me or it wasn’t something I was interested in. For example, I had qualified for an honors English course one semester and really had to be talked by my teacher into taking it. At the time, I could not think of anything more dry and boring, but after going through it, it honestly turned out to be one of my favorite classes I had ever taken at Silverdale.
Q: Of all of the faculty and staff, who made the biggest impression on you during your time as a student? A: Wow. You know, being a pretty involved kid I had the awesome chance to be really impacted by a lot of faculty and staff at Silverdale. The one that stands out to me most though, probably to his surprise, is Mickey Hammel, my high school principal. He constantly challenged me in who I was and in who I wanted to be and he really helped give substance to some of the things I naturally had in my personality to be the best version of myself. If he ever got a sense of me acting up or being a bit of a knucklehead, I would generally hear an “easy there Killen” that would be followed up with a lesson or some insight on the matter. It was always very genuine and he really took an interest in students’ futures. That helped shaped me in my late junior and senior years, allowing me to take those next steps after Silverdale. 6 2018-2019 Head of School Annual Report
Q: What’s new with you since high school graduation? A: Since graduating, I received my Bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Education from Jacksonville State University and received my Master’s degree in Sport Management from the University of Alabama. After my undergraduate years, I bounced around working in different roles as a rock climbing guide and a challenge course builder and it wasn’t really until I got married that I decided to get back into education and work with students. My wife and I moved to Tuscaloosa so that I could work on my Graduate degree, and since then, I have been working in higher education within their outdoor recreation programs and as an adjunct faculty member. I have since worked at the University of Alabama, Oklahoma State University, and now have recently come full circle and I am back at Jacksonville State University.
Q: You have a free weekend, no plans. What will you be up to?
Q: How has your faith been challenged, and how have you seen the Lord work in your life since high school?
A: In the fall, I’m generally headed to a local rock climbing area with a climbing partner or two, and in the spring, I’m usually on my mountain bike chasing new trails throughout the Southeast. Really engaging in anything outdoors that challenges me and pushes my mental and physical abilities really allows me to recharge from the week in a healthy and honestly a spiritual way. At times my wife and I will take a spontaneous weekend trip to somewhere we think is cool and just try to find the best food and best views of the area or might try to catch a concert. At the same time, you can’t beat hanging out at the house with my wife, our dog, with some good coffee and good conversation.
A: I never have really (yet) had this super profound moment where my faith has been challenged head-on in a huge way. For me, the challenge is to remain steadfast in Christ in an industry where that’s generally not celebrated, and even discouraged. I think the biggest leap of faith my wife and I took was moving to Oklahoma City after I graduated from the University of Alabama. I had a few job opportunities pop up at the time but we both felt the Lord calling us to head out to Oklahoma for reasons we were really unaware of. I think at times when you take these leaps of faith when you know the Holy Spirit is leading you in one direction, you expect these massive results or very evident reasons for being called somewhere. In our case, my wife and I grew immensely in our marriage as a result of packing up and moving to a place where you don’t know a soul within several hundred miles. We found an amazing church home, made great friends, and adopted our awesome dog Millie. Even as small as those things seemed on paper, Christ used that unique setting to really knit together a Christ-centered fabric for my wife and I to base our family foundation on. As challenging as that big move was financially and even emotionally, in the end Christ understands and knows what He’s doing and I can honestly say that as a spiritual leader for my family, our experience out there was crucial to how I lead and grow my family today.

WALK:
A Message From Class of 2019 Alum Justus Patnett When people spend their whole life in the Church, they’ll undoubtedly pick up terminology such as “the Christian walk,” or “the Christian journey.” If you, the reader, are anything like me, you may have at some point been disheartened to hear that this Walk is a continuous process that will take you through joy and hardship; peace and tumult. When I gave my life to Christ at age twelve, I was surprised to experience this difficult truth firsthand; never did I consider that being inhabited by the Spirit would not prevent me from being the imperfect sinner who needed God’s grace in the first place. As time grew on and my Walk with Christ matured, I found ways to deal with the challenge of living in a fallen world: embrace the ones you love, thank God for your predecessors, friends and mentors, reflect on your blessings, and never lose heart. As the first semester of my college experience draws to a close, I reflect on the blessing that God has brought me to an excellent University where I can shine His light. I reflect on the blessing that my homesickness is cured with a call to my parents or a gaze at pictures that captured fond memories. I reflect on the blessing that I am healthy and safe. I reflect on the blessing that God never stopped walking with me during my high school and middle school years, even when Satan or my own sin nature laid siege to my soul. I embrace my mother, who cries every time I return to campus after an all-too-brief visit. I embrace my father; whose wisdom guides my mind back to the Word of God when I am tempted by my own will to not do so. I embrace the intellectual independence that my pre-collegiate education has helped foster in me; an independence which guards my heart and faith against a skeptical world. When all else fails; I remember my life verse, Romans 8:38-39: “For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor demons, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ our Lord.” Let these words guide you in your walk with Christ as they have guided mine. “What does Silverdale mean to me?” The answer is simple - community. It is an environment that lays a foundation that doesn’t crumble under the pressure of today’s standards. This picture represents just that-community. It is seven friends that span 3 states and multiple careers but stop to celebrate the marriage of one of our own. Though 4 years have passed since we were described as “the squad” and life has quickly taken us in different directions, it took all of five minutes to jump right back into our irreplaceable bond. It is real. It is genuine and it is comfortable. Thank you Silverdale for mentoring us into the men we are today. Colston Johnson | Class of 2015

FOOD for the SOUL Each year, the Chattanooga Area Food Bank distributes more than 10 million pounds of food, the equivalent to 9 million meals to those in need. They also hand out nearly 21,000 emergency food boxes. A portion of this food is received through community food drives like the WRCB Channel 3 Share Your Christmas Food Drive each year just before Christmas. This is why Silverdale Baptist Academy partners annually with them to help collect canned goods. The Chattanooga Area Food Bank leads a 380-member network of partners in eliminating hunger and promoting better nutrition across 20 counties in southeast Tennessee and northwest Georgia. Food Bank programs include Sack Pack and Kids Cafe to combat child hunger, the Senior Grocery Program, Emergency Food Box program for individuals and families with urgent food needs, Agency Shopping to help member agencies procure food for their pantries and feeding programs, and the Second Helpings program, a food rescue program partnering with local restaurants, convention centers, and cafeterias. The difference a can of corn can make truly impacts people in our area. Hunger is a very real issue within our own community here in Chattanooga. This is one Silverdale service project with participation from the youngest preschoolers up through our high school students, who are downtown by 5 a.m. to begin sorting the day’s downtown donations. To see the difference that our students create for those less fortunate is truly awe-inspiring.

Strike Up The Band! All the fine arts disciplines at Silverdale are growing and flourishing, from our dance group, HIS Company, to our amazing middle school and high school theatre groups to our private instruction program and more! One of the exciting long-term projects though has been in the area of instrumental music. Silverdale’s band program was implemented in the summer and fall of 2014, though it had been dreamed of for much longer. Mr. Stephen Humphries was reluctant to come on board as the first band director at that time, protesting that he was not the best choice for this position. The first band camp that summer consisted of twelve students - mostly beginners - and frankly, the sound they produced proved that point. Mr. Humphries is a patient man and incredibly talented musically. He understands the discipline required to learn to play an instrument well. When I asked him how he inspires band students he said, “I care about each of my students and I want them to succeed, so I push them toward excellence.” Since that humble beginning in 2014, the Silverdale band program has steadily grown to a total of 45 members in the fall of 2018, the beginning of its fifth year. In that short period of time, the band’s sound has improved exponentially in addition to adding a marching component. This type of growth is rare to say the least, so I asked Mr. Humphries to what he attributes that rate of growth. His reply was that “the exposure the band got from the very beginning began to spark student interest.” The group played as a pep band from the beginning. The school has encouraged and supported the band program extremely well as the plan for a designated band room in The Silverdale Center project proves. When discussing our aspirations for the Silverdale Seahawk Band, we both agreed that marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in a few years would be just fine!

Named to commemorate the founding year of Silverdale Baptist Academy, The 1999 Club launched in the spring of 2019 and was created to develop, grow, and serve the athletic programs at Silverdale Baptist Academy through moral, physical, and financial support.
1999 CLUB
As a booster organization, the 1999 Club is designed to partner with Silverdale athletic staff and school administration for the betterment of the student-athlete throughout his or her time at the Academy, whether that be in elementary school, middle school, or high school. Club funds raised are directed to non-budgeted items that are considered necessary to enhance the student and fan experience.
A top priority moving into the 2019-2020 school year is raising the funds needed to properly outfit the weight room in The Silverdale Center as we prepare to occupy the space in 2020. Along with this strategic planning, the 1999 Club is preparing to further support all of the athletic programs consistently, beyond the budgeted needs. As the 1999 Club moves into its first full year as a new athletics booster club on campus, we look forward to seeing the community support the 1999 Club as it then supports our student-athletes!

Thinking Outside The Box Director of Outdoor Education Al Rogers continued to provide resources and opportunities for our teachers and students to think outside and forget the box in the 2018-2019 school year! From continued development in our gardens to a new bee hive to an aquaponics setup in Mr. Smith’s science lab, there has been plenty of activity at Silverdale related to the great outdoors. Along with these new developments, Silverdale has been working hard to come as close as possible to eliminating our carbon footprint, which begins with waste that would otherwise find its way to our local landfills. A renewed effort in recycling of all types of materials, as well as a repurposing of food waste from lunch, has helped to significantly cut down on what goes into the trash each day at Silverdale. Pictured here are snapshots of our Creation Celelbration: Outdoor Expo where students learned from local vendors and other community partners all that there is to do in the way of recreation in the greater Chattanooga area. Students had a blast learning outdoor survival skills, playing with gear from Adventure Sports Innovation, and much more. Just look at the smiles on those faces! If you stop by campus at any point during a school day, you’re likely going to find our students both learning from and enjoying the great outdoors!

High school engineering students work through their trebuchet concept.
“Heads Up!” Mr. Bob Walter’s high school engineering class went from scale model concept to full-scale functionality with studentdesigned and built trebuchets. Integrating the concepts essential to mechanics with an understanding of mass and force, students went through a period of testing with scale models before being given a budget and timeline to launch! Three teams designed and built their own trebuchet out of lumber and used weighted plates to fine-tune their setup. The best part was having an audience of elementary students cheering them on! Whether it’s trebuchets in high school, the egg drop challenge in middle school science, or a dedicated STEAM Night for elementary students and their parents, STEAM is alive and well at Silverdale! Our faculty teach the latest concepts and continue to be engaged in their own professional development to maximize the experience for their students in the classroom. Students are loving all the new opportunities!
