Mission SBA’s mission is to partner with families in order to provide an environment of academic excellence with a Biblical worldview, which is conducive to developing educated young people of character, while preparing them to represent our Lord Jesus Christ in all walks of life.

Vision SBA’s vision is to impact our world by preparing students to become Godly warriors, as we implement Discipleship (Mt. 28:15–20), expect Excellence (1 Cor. 10:31), and encourage Integrity (Psalm 15).

Silverdale Family, As I reflect on the 2019-2020 school year, I cannot do so without acknowledging the impact that the Coronavirus has left on our world. The Scriptures are filled with stories of incredible storms - storms at sea, hail storms, thunderstorms, and more. A prophecy in Jeremiah 51:42 refers to Babylon being engulfed with the sea’s “tumultuous waves.” To say this past year has been tumultuous is an understatement. However, rather than focusing on the negative, I have decided to make an intentional mindshift. I am making a daily choice, sometimes hourly, to reach my goal this year of relying on God for guidance while I attempt to gracefully lead our Academy through this pandemic. I am choosing to change my focus to concentrating on how He is moving amongst us on our campus. And I am happy to report that remarkable things are happening at Silverdale. Despite the constantly changing circumstances, we celebrate that: • Our academics, fine arts, and athletics programs continue to grow and thrive. • SBA is at an all-time high for enrollment, with 1,144 students enrolled from preschool through 12th grade. • A spring opening date for our Silverdale Center is quickly approaching. • Our outdoor education program is flourishing with expanded areas and activities. • Most importantly, God is at work. We see students, your children, leading out and growing in the Lord. We have had the privilege to witness God’s faithful hand on our Academy over this last year. One of my greatest joys throughout this pandemic has been seeing our fellow Seahawks flock together to support each other. We are stronger together, and together we can successfully weather the storms. The future is bright for Silverdale Baptist Academy. I trust that God is in complete control in our world, in our country, in our homes, and on the SBA campus. I commit to you that we will look for ways to join God where He is at work in the lives of your children. We covet your prayers. I sincerely hope you take a moment to sit back and enjoy this year in review. We are Silverdale.

BUILD Gala Recap The 2019 BUILD Gala was another year of festivities and fundraising for our students. The theme was centered around the building campaign for The Silverdale Center, fresh off the groundbreaking earlier that spring. The architects and contractors were among our special guests for the evening, and our gala volunteer team constructed another wonderful atmosphere focused on the silent and live auction items, dinner, and a spirit of giving. We even heard testimonies of God’s faithfulness from former student-turned SBA parent Jaime Ballard-Barlow and now-graduate Dakari White ‘20. When all was said and done, the evening raised over $60,000 for future generations of Silverdale students, so a special thankyou is in order to our BUILD Gala chairs, Dr. and Mrs. Michael Weathersby! 4 2019-2020 Head of School Annual Report

The walls are up and the electricity has been installed to our new greenhouse that was awarded in December from Farm Bureau! The new greenhouse will open up a new array of learning opportunities on our campus. It will provide many opportunities for our students to cultivate their interests in horticulture, as well as hands-on experiences. In the future, we hope that the greenhouse will also be used as part of an outreach to our community.

Wondering At Creation Our fourteen thriving garden beds have produced many favorites this summer! Our students have been able to harvest tomatoes, okra, cantaloupe, Swiss chard, peppers, strawberries, watermelon, onions, lavender, sage, rosemary, beans, and tomatillos. This fall we will be harvesting sorghum, birdhouse gourds, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, pumpkins carrots, and collard greens! The garden has also given us many learning opportunities about life cycles, symbiotic relationships, and predator/prey interactions. Never have we seen such an abundance of life in our gardens! 6 2019-2020 Head of School Annual Report

While learning the importance of pollinators to our environment, our middle school students have taken an overgrown section of our campus and transformed the area into a beautiful pollinator garden. The students planned, planted, and are maintaining the

area to encourage pollinators on our campus. This work in progress will draw all types of pollinators and will offer many place-based learning opportunities for our students. We are so very blessed to have honey bees on our campus. Since installing our observation hive over a year ago, we have increased opportunities for educating our students, staff, and the community around us. We are teaching students about the life-cycle of honey bees, their importance to the food supply, and the many benefits of honey. We share with students that honey is mentioned 61 times in the Bible. Making biblical connections to the natural world is invaluable. Our honey bees help to pollinate our gardens and the numerous flowering plants on campus and nearby areas. Students, staff, and community members are able to observe our bees in action. This spring we harvested almost 3 gallons of honey from our hive with the help of a local beekeeper. We have since added an additional hive to our apiary. Many of these new hive components were donated by our wonderful mentor through our partnership with the Hamilton County Beekeepers Association. We envision using the honey that we harvest in our dining program, to raise interest and awareness, and to raise funds to purchase additional equipment and educational materials such as protective gear for students. This will allow students to be more hands-on, giving them opportunities to understand, engage, and learn from honey bees in order to connect with the natural environment while developing science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) skills. After a year-long application process, Silverdale was recently awarded a $26,000 grant from Outride’s Riding for Focus cycling program!

As a recipient of the grant, Silverdale will be receiving 27 new Specialized mountain bikes, helmets, maintenance kits, Riding For Focus curriculum, and program training. We are excited to bring the bicycle curriculum to our middle school physical education classes, as well as other school groups! Research shows that cycling has a unique and powerful impact on students’ learning, mood, attention, confidence, and fitness. The positive effects are even more profound on students who struggle with attention disorders. The Riding for Focus schoolbased cycling program was born after Mike Sinyard, founder of Specialized Bicycle Components, found that cycling improved his ADHD enough to go from high-school dropout to the founder of one of the world’s most successful bike companies. We can’t wait to use cycling to help Silverdale students achieve academic, physical, and social success! We continue to partner with Waterways in teaching our kids aquatic stewardship. The Waterways stream team meets with our pre-k, 3rd, 6th and 9th grade students each month. They will be learning how to be good stewards of our own Friar Branch as well as the Chickamauga Watershed. There will be a culminating project at the end of the year. The hands-on learning opportunities abound at Silverdale Baptist Academy. From our new sensory barefoot walk path to a one-acre wooded learning space with a new fire pit, our students have adventures waiting to happen and life lessons waiting to be learned. SBA is a place where students can wonder at creation, while worshipping the Creator!

The Silverdale Center Project Head of School Becky Hansard has worked endlessly with her administration, teachers, and coaches to design the Silverdale Center from what once was considered just a dream. She has always lived and implemented Habakkuk 2:2-3 into her strategic plan for the Academy: “Record the vision and inscribe it on tablets, That the one who reads it may run. For the vision is yet for the appointed time; It hastens toward the goal and it will not fail. Though it tarries, wait for it; For it will certainly come, it will not delay.” Under her leadership, Silverdale Baptist Academy set out to change the academic environment for this community. The Silverdale Center will give the Academy its own identity with all of its fine arts and athletic offerings. It will be a beacon to the greater Chattanooga community. “Everyone loves picking the fruit from a vineyard, but someone years ago had the vision and made the sacrifice to plant the vineyard. Building these facilities is planting the vineyard. We will see the fruit of our sacrifice for generations,” says Silverdale Baptist Church Senior Pastor Tony Walliser of the Silverdale Center project. Following the groundbreaking ceremony in May of 2019 and the start of construction early that fall, no one could have imagined the setbacks that began with months of poor weather conditions. Brent Collier, Vice President of J&J Contractors, acknowledged that “weather is always a question mark when planning a job.” After the weather cleared out, it wouldn’t be long though before COVID-19 would hit us all. “Learning how to safely manage and build a project while dealing with labor, communication, and material availability issues brought on by the pandemic has been challenging to say the least,” says Collier. For architect Dale Rardin of Rardin & Carroll Architects, work with Silverdale began all the way back in 1993, well before the founding of the Academy. Both the architects and contractor

have a passion for faith-based projects like the Silverdale Center, and it’s been a pleasure to partner with both in order to see this vision through from concept to reality over the past four years. The building dominates the view from Bonny Oaks now as you drive by, packing into the available property between the creek and surrounding roads. “It is like three unique buildings in one gymnasium, classrooms, and theatre - and coordinating those functions within one single building has been challenging” says Rardin. After intense planning and revisions, every inch of functionality has been squeezed out of the space. For our student-athletes, that space will include training facilities and a 1,000-seat tournament capacity gymnasium, providing opportunities not yet realized by our Seahawks. Pride and passion in our programs has been building over our 20-year history, and these new facilities will further perpetuate this as the pursuit of excellence continues for our athletes. For Pastor Walliser, Dale Rardin, and Brent Collier, the end goal is the same. As Pastor Walliser shared: “When you walk through the halls and know that they will be filled with students, stand in the gym and know that it will be hosting tournaments for generations, and stand in the auditorium, you can imagine hundreds of voices lifted up in praise to God.” Mrs. Hansard shares a similar perspective: ”I am humbled beyond words by what the Lord has done through our Silverdale families and their commitment to this project. Their dedication to our Heavenly Father and Christian education has made this project a reality. To God be the Glory, Great things He has done.”

“We have been delighted from day one to be involved with such a landmark project for Silverdale and the community. To know we are playing a key role in the growth of an organization centered on faith and the spiritual development of its students is fulfilling. It’s exciting to think about how the new Silverdale Center will be used to enhance the learning opportunities and spiritual growth of the student body. We hope the new facility serves Silverdale and the community for decades to come.”

Q: What are some of your favorite memories of your time at Silverdale? A: Silverdale holds thousands of unforgettable memories that I could talk about all day. Being an athlete, the countless games I played and attended will always be something I remember. I will never forget when we beat cross-town rival Boyd-Buchanan School for the first time in school history, my junior year. I won’t ever forget the first game I played in my freshman year at Bledsoe County. Sports were important to me, but my favorite memory was in elementary school. In fifth grade, I accepted Christ during chapel. Mr. Miller spoke to us, and this was the first time I truly felt the Lord tugging at my heart - a feeling I will never forget. This memory has changed my life forever.

Q: Of all of the faculty and staff at Silverdale, who made the biggest impression on you during your time as a student, and why? A: Silverdale is jam-packed with faculty that have changed my life for the better. I know I could turn down any hallway there and someone influential and helpful would be standing by, asking how my day was or how they could help me. If I had to narrow it down to one teacher, though, it would be Blaine Vandegriff. He continuously poured into me as a mentor and a friend. He helped me get through my bad days and cheered me on in my good days. Even before I had him in class, he would always talk to me, and now that I’ve graduated, he will still check in, say he is praying for me, or ask how I am doing.

Q: What are some of the major lessons you’ve taken with you? A: Silverdale taught me many things, but the most important lesson I learned was never to change my character for others. This became very real to me when I got to college. I quickly realized that everyone didn’t identify themselves as Christian and neither did they behave in the manner I was taught to behave. Silverdale instilled in me to stay true to myself while also being a leader instead of following the disobedient ways of others.

10 2019-2020 Head of School Annual Report

Q: Talk about your decision to attend the United States Naval Academy. What attracted you to the football and academic programs there? A: Attending the Naval Academy was a big decision for me. Growing up, I never thought I would be in the military. If you told me a year ago that I would one day be an officer in the Navy, I would have laughed at you. I always thought I would play football or basketball at a typical university, just like any other student-athlete. Upon receiving a football offer from the academy, I was able to see the benefits the schooling and military life had to offer. The Naval Academy has been ranked the No. 1 public school in the nation countless times (including this year), showing me that this is the best education I could possibly get. The football team went 11-1 last year while playing nationally ranked teams, week in and week out, proving that they would provide an outstanding home to continue my athletic career. The military side of things is new to me, but graduating from the Naval Academy will allow me to be an officer in the Navy, which will give me a job immediately after college while also not being in any college debt. This will allow me to provide for my future family and overall, make me a better man.

Q: How has your faith been challenged, and how have you seen the Lord work in your life since graduation? A: I was always told throughout my time at Silverdale that we would be tested once we left. It was weird walking into my room and meeting my roommate who isn’t religious in any way. I grew up my whole life around very religious people and now I am living with someone who is an Atheist. I am surrounded by hundreds of non-Christians and it is challenging to keep the straight path and continue to seek out God when I am constantly around others who don’t have the same beliefs as me. I strive every day to communicate with these people and show them the love of the Lord through my actions while also trying to share the Word through my words without closing any doors between us and without allowing them to persuade my own personal beliefs.

“The teachers have made this virtual learning experience so easy! I love how organized and easy to follow the daily directions have been. Our teachers are amazing and I am so thankful for them.” Laura

“We have been so impressed with the thoughtful preparation and delivery of the lessons by the teachers. Knox has been so excited to begin his lessons each morning and has loved seeing his teachers, Dr. Swope’s cat, and the developments in the garden. Thank you for your continued dedication to the spiritual and academic growth of Silverdale students!” Ann “I saw an independent teenager doing his lessons on his own, talking with his teachers as a professional. I saw a big effort of everyone at SBA always loving and caring for us. We are so thankful to be part of this great community.” Alejandra “As an I.T. professional, I am blown away by the smoothness of the transition. Silverdale was well-prepared for this...A job welldone to whoever led this project, clearly in the works prior to the COVID-19 outbreak.” Jonathan

“This has been a breeze because the kids have their teachers’ support and instruction. I don’t feel alone.” Lori “My senior daughter sits down at the kitchen table and says, ‘watch these videos my teachers have sent to encourage us! It’s the best part of my day!’ I’m so grateful to these amazing teachers who truly love my kids and pour into them!” Heather 12 2019-2020 Head of School Annual Report

Our Virtual Reality: Spring 2020 When COVID-19 forced us to close our doors in March for a full transition to a virtual learning environment, no one knew for sure just how long we would be living in this new reality. Through the Lord’s guidance well prior to the COVID-19 pandemic though, a team was already at work looking at ways to effectively reach and teach students in a virtual environment. Timelines were moved up and many hours and many more dollars were invested when the transition home became a reality for everyone. The end result was a Silverdale Baptist Academy faculty, staff, and administration who were capable of fully engaging with students in ways that would ensure they would be prepared to confidently re-enter the classroom, whenever that time came. All along the way, we leaned hard on the strong partnership we have with our parents as we lived this all together. While there were certainly challenges at times related to things like technology, time management, and assessments, we all made time for some fun along the way with things like the Spring Break 2020 Staycation Challenge and the May Madness Virtual Talent Show. Ultimately, we celebrated the accomplishments of the entire Silverdale Family in May with unique end-of-the-year events, including drive-thru celebrations, parades, and the Ding Dong Ditch Awards, where upper school awards were personally delivered to students’ homes by their administrators and teachers! Finally, we settled our focus on those who had reached the pinnacle of their education careers at Silverdale Baptist Academy and honored the Class of 2020 with a private, in-person, socially distanced graduation ceremony on the football field - on their originally scheduled graduation date! As Unto The Lord The scripts. The practice. The actors and actresses. The coming attraction... We know that when our students take part in the performing arts, they learn about much more than just theatre, music, and dance. They collaborate, they create, they engage in self-expression and self-reflection, and they learn where their gifts and talents come from. For years, our Fine Arts Department has been dreaming of a space worthy of our incredible theater and music productions. Our new Creekside Theatre will be more than a theatre space; it will be a community gathering place, a forum for exchanging ideas, a laboratory for experiments in light, space, and sound. It will be a place for us to come together as a school for weekly Chapels and classes, as well as a destination for members of the greater Chattanooga community to attend lectures, performances, readings, and concerts. The impact that this theatre will have on the lives of not only our students but the thousands of people that will come through the doors for worship, for chapels, and simply gathering will be staggering. All for His glory!

Recognition of Achievement In early 2014, out of a desire to recognize employees for their dedication, hard work, and professionalism, Head of School Becky Hansard created and instituted the Head of School Outstanding Achievement Challenge Coin. The concept of challenge coins finds its roots in the military and law enforcement, where specially-designed coins are distributed to recognize outstanding achievement among specific individuals. Not only does something like a challenge coin boost morale, but it also provides the recipient with the feeling of belonging to a team. Because challenge coins are entirely custom in their creation, much time was devoted to the task of creating the perfect look before a final design was selected and the coins were struck. Mrs. Hansard was so instrumental in developing this coin because she wanted it to be special and suitable for the chosen employees who would receive them. A donor even paid for the full amount of this project! The coins were delivered, and a process and procedure was developed so that any supervisor or employee could nominate any deserving individual in the organization. Although the final decision on a given nominee lies with Mrs. Hansard, the beauty of the process is that employees nominate their peers for this high honor, sharing at length in their submission as to why the individual is worthy of recognition. Once recipients are selected by the Head of School to receive the Head of School Outstanding Achievement Challenge Coin, they are recognized and presented with this honor at the upcoming full faculty meeting. At that time, our Head of School reads the nomination submission aloud to our faculty and staff before revealing the recipient and presenting him or her with the coin as well as with a small token of additional appreciation, usually a gift card to a local restaurant. The Head of School Outstanding Achievement Challenge Coin is such a thoughtful way of recognizing employees in the Academy and is one-of-a-kind and especially designed and created for our Academy by our Head of School. Recipients of the Head of School Outstanding Achievement Challenge Coin to-date are: Diane Alosi Nikki Bautista David Barber Kathy Clanton Judith Ervin Joy Fisk Tom Fuller
