Bingley show – your special Prosider guide to what’s on The gates open from 9am to 6pm Dogs on leads will be admitted on the showground. Never leave your dog unattended in a vehicle as it may suffocate. For more information see the website www.bingleyshow.co.uk or ring 01274 564400

We are delighted to be featuring the Bingley Show in this special Show Edition. Now in its 131st year, it is one of the north’s leading agricultural events.

Show programme, but some of the highlights include the start of Bingley Harriers’ fell race at 11.30am and a thrilling motor cycle display at 2pm.

Taking part in Myrtle Park’s glorious riverside setting right next to the town the show brings you animals, country demonstrations, havea-go activities, fairground attractions and a wide range of artisan gifts and crafts.

The animals and produce remain the real stars, with competitive classes running throughout the day, for everything from cattle to cakes, from delphiniums to ducks and from hens to local honey.

Don’t miss the show ring where you can see show jumping, shire horses, cattle and classic car and tractor parade.

And to provide lively background music, the ever-popular Bradford City brass band will be entertaining the crowds.

It’s one of the biggest one-day events in the country… and packs in everything from fashion to food to fantastic animal classes… and it’s fun whether you’re a competitor, an exhibitor, or a visitor!

A popular feature is the Deliciously Yorkshire food tent. Here many types of tempting food and drink are available, both to taste and buy. The vast majority is produced here in Yorkshire – a tribute to the diversity of food available across the county.

Our star attraction at this year’s event will be the RAF Lancaster bomber which is timed to fly over Myrtle Park at 2.35pm. This is the very same aircraft which provided the fly-past at William and Kate’s wedding at Westminster Abbey. The show ring will have an action-packed programme from 8.30am to about 5.30pm. Times can be found in the official Bingley

More than anything else, Bingley Show is a wonderful place just to meet your friends and family and have a good day out. Whether you’re 7 or 70, a farmer or a shopper, you can be sure that you will have the best time ever! Great Day, Great Fun, Great Show.

131st Bingley Show

Fun for all the family Introduction to Bingley Show from the president, David Illingworth I am proud to welcome Prosider readers to this our 131st Bingley Show. I hope you will be amongst the tens of thousands of visitors we expect to come and enjoy one of the greatest one-day agricultural shows in the north. And I am particularly delighted to welcome back the heavy horses and show-jumping events after a two-year absence – thanks to our historic Ireland Bridge being successfully restored to full use again. The show started out as a simple ploughing match in a field at Gawthorpe in 1862 and made a welcome day out for farmers in the area. Since then the nature of Bingley Show has been slowly evolving. As country-based crafts begin to die out, new technologies take their place. Though our agricultural origins are close to our heart we have broadened out the appeal of the show to entertain everyone from bird-fanciers to knitters and from classic car lovers to jam makers. We have a very special star attraction this year. We are thrilled that the World War II Lancaster bomber which marked the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s recent wedding will fly over the showground. The RAF Lancaster bomber is one of just two still in operation and promises to provide a thrilling spectacle as it roars across the sky.

And once again Titan the eight-foot robot will delight the children. New this year we have fly-fishing demonstrations by the river and zoo pets – a marquee with exotic animals. The animals are everyone’s favourites, but there’s far more to keep visitors of all ages fascinated. We’ve got competitions for farm products, vegetables and flowers. We’ve got motorcycle stunts, donkeys all the way from Blackpool beach and a tractor parade. So although people’s lifestyles have changed since the earliest shows, Bingley Show is still a fabulous day out for all the family.

131st Bingley Show

A look behind the show Prosider editor Simon Harrup persuaded Leslie Gore, Bingley Show’s managing director, to give Prosider readers this insight into what is involved in giving Bingley residents and visitors from further afield this magnificent show each year. Read on and you will also find out why the date had to be changed. Visitors to Bingley’s prestigious agricultural show may not be aware of the months of hard work behind the scenes that go into putting on an event of this size.

committee: “Ten years ago we moved the show from Wednesday to Sunday and saw big improvements in our ticket sales, so we knew we mustn’t go back to a weekday.

It’s a round-the-year task to co-ordinate the diversity of high-quality attractions and exhibits which visitors to the show have come to expect.

“So we had to bite the bullet and make a change that would become our permanent new fixture on the calendar. The nearest Saturday that caused the fewest clashes with other local events was Saturday, 23 July. Make a note of this new date and please tell all your friends.”

As managing director of Bingley Show and chair of the organising committee, Leslie Gore, leads and inspires the army of volunteers which works to professional standards the year round to put on this highly visible event. This year Leslie and his team had to face one of the biggest changes the show has ever had to make. The discovery of a nineteenth century byelaw which forbids the complete closure of Myrtle Park on Sundays meant that the show could no longer be held on its preferred Sunday in August. East Morton-born Leslie outlines the difficult decision facing the

Leslie took on the role of chair and managing director of Bingley Show about four years ago.

131st Bingley Show

Having managed the Chatsworth estate at Bolton Abbey for 20 years, Leslie had the perfect skills. He had also proved his commitment by improving the show’s layout to make better use of Myrtle Park’s geography. Leslie said: “I wanted to create a circular route round the perimeter of the showground which would draw in all the attractions. We have already achieved much better use of the lower area, but I am working with Bradford Council towards providing a paved pathway. This will be much better for everyone, particularly prams and wheel chairs.” Under Leslie’s leadership, separate committees organise different sections of the show, such as the cat tent, the show jumping or the catering tent. It’s Leslie’s job to outline what needs doing, and then step back unless he needs to help with difficult decisions. Closely involved from the start of the planning process, it is Leslie who draws the detailed plan of the ground and where everything will be. He gives guidance and support to other committee members, draws

on his extensive contacts in the agricultural world to get things done, advises on which attractions to hire and firmly steers the show in the right direction. He is even on the show ground from 5am on show day to make sure the stall holders are happy. Asked to sum up why he does this job Leslie said: “When I was persuaded to take this on it was only for ‘one Wednesday morning a week’, but as the show day approaches it becomes a daily occupation. I work with a team of the most dedicated volunteers and I particularly enjoy encouraging young people to get involved with the show. “As a Bingley man I feel privileged to play my part in the town’s events calendar.”

Milner Field - Walking in the Footsteps of Titus Junior? In this article our local historian Alan Cattell seeks to add to knowledge of what Milner Field and its grounds may originally have looked like when built 141 years ago. To do so his research has included articles written in the 1870’s, discussion with Roger Clarke the Saltaire historian and identification of maps, architects drawings and etchings from the time. Thanks also go to Bradford Libraries and Shipley College, Saltaire Archives for their time and help. Right: Map of Milner Field grounds and buildings.

What might Titus have considered? 1. Gardeners House 2. Garden Utility Sheds 3. Nursery Gardens 4. Western Lodge 5. Milner Field Mansion 6. Conservatory 7. Stable Building 8. Track to Eastern Lodge 9. Lake

At a time when photography was in its infancy Titus Salt Junior would have had to rely on the vision of his architects and other contractors and their ability to convey design and building considerations to him. This would have been by means of maps, sketches, drawings and stained glass cartoons which gave more than a flavour of what was being suggested or recommended to him. In this article I will include images of some of these so that you the reader can try to place yourself in his mindset. In doing so it is also my intention to “walk” you through the building and landscape.

Purchasing the Land Whilst there had been a smaller house on the site since 1400, primarily owned by the Milner then Oldfield, then Fell families, Sir Titus Salt bought the land for £21,000 in 1869 from an Admiral Dunscombe and immediately demolished the house. Ownership then passed to Titus Salt Junior who proceeded to commission the building of a new house. Building the new Milner Field On Monday 21st June 1869 the above advertisement appeared in the Bradford Observer.

Building Style The style of the house was described in Building News 15th March 1873 as “12th Century medieval, an assemblage of circular conical-capped towers, great chimney stacks and machicolations, all raised up on a terrace”. The shell of the house was

History built over two years between 1871 and 1873 in the (then fashionable) neoGothic style. Opinion seemed to be divided between advocates of this style and critics such as John Ruskin who described the house as a Gothic monstrosity. The material used in the construction was “the grey local stone, the outer walls being lined with brick so as to form hollow walls and thereby prevent the possibility of dampness” The roofs were covered with Whitland Abbey green slates bought and transported from Wales. The Builder magazine of March 15th 1873 reported that by that date “internal decorations are now in progress”.

Equipment What was clear from the very outset of the building programme was that considerable thought had been given to equipping the house with the most up to date equipment and facilities. These included: • An elaborate lighting system • Own water piped from nearby natural springs • An underground reservoir and canal to supply water to the Glasshouses in the Kitchen Garden • Own filter beds for sewage disposal • Telephonic systems connecting the house with the Saltaire Mill. An experiment between the Mill and Milner Field was carried out in September 1877 to enable this to happen. Later links were established with family in Halifax during 1879.

Milner Field, rear entrance

Shipley Glen, past Trench Farm and Fell Wood, before reaching South Lodge. This lodge (also known as Bottom Lodge) was the start of an uphill climb to Milner Field using a long tree lined approach road through thick woodland. To the left of this road lay a small lake and fishpond with an island and rustic wooden bridge, a boathouse and several rowing boats. Eventually the road turned left to approach the entrance-way to the house

• Fire pumps and appliances for obtaining water at high pressure

Milner Field was built facing almost due north and south, the entrance being on the north (rear) side of the building through an arched gateway into a spacious enclosed courtyard. To catch the sun, the principal rooms of the house faced south and opened onto a wide terrace with steps leading down to the park.

Travelling to the House from Saltaire

Entering Milner Field

After leaving Saltaire via what is now Victoria Road and originally crossing a stone bridge, Milner Field could be reached by a carriage drive along a private road westward below

To enter the house from the rear courtyard visitors would pass through an outer porch and vestibule before arriving in the entrance hall.

was primarily the service wing of the house reached by a corridor which contained a house-keepers room, butler’s pantry and a servery leading through to the dining room. An entrance from the courtyard onto this corridor was provided to enable visitors’ luggage to be brought unobtrusively into the house.

This space was dominated by a three manual organ built by Brindley and Fletcher of Sheffield and served as a music room as well as an entrance lobby. Building News (1873) commenting about the inside of the building observed: “The whole interior treatment has been kept in harmony with the style of architecture, all the fittings and much of the furniture have been made from special designs.

At its far end the corridor led down some stairs to the kitchen, food preparation and storage areas and heating supply for the house. The octagonal shaped kitchen was designed to be a replica of that at Glastonbury Abbey in medieval times.

Some of the rooms have handsome moulded open ceilings of oak, and woodwork in the principal apartments is either of walnut or chestnut, oak or cedarwood, whilst many of the windows are fitted with stained glass, the subjects being legendary, emblematical or symbolical”

West Wing To the right of the entrance hall was an arch which led through to the principal house staircase to the first floor, then past a smoking room to reach the billiard room. The billiard room also had a separate “Gentlemans Entrance” from the courtyard.

History First Floor Bedrooms In total there were nine bedrooms, four facing north and looking out over the courtyard and croquet lawn, and five at the front of the building facing south and looking out over the parkland. Three toilets and bathrooms provided services to these rooms, some ensuite for occasions when there were visitors. At the far west end, with a front facing window and a side facing window next to the Conservatory was a bedroom with facilities, a boudoir and dressing room. This is the room where Royalty stayed on the two occasions that they visited Milner Field in 1882 and 1887.

abundance of purpose built wicker garden furniture. Titus Salt Jr was an avid collector of exotics and in the conservatory he grew and displayed ornamental foliaged plants such as tree ferns, palms, yucca’s, large auraucaria, dracaenas, aurelias and phormia. Lapagerias climbed to the roof on the south side and fuchias and clematis on the north side. On state occasions such as Royal visits the conservatory was lit up with Chinese lanterns. Grounds

The principal rooms on the ground floor of the house were south facing in aspect and overlooked the terrace, which then had steps leading down to the parkland.

Between 1869 and 1872 the Salt’s employed Robert Marnock who was noted as, one of the greatest landscape designers of the 19th century. He was given the task of designing and planting the approach woodland to the house as well as the parkland and kitchen gardens.

These rooms were reached from the entrance hall through arches on either side of the hall fireplace. The left hand arch led through to the dining room which had a corridor connecting it to the library.

As an advocate of the “gardenesque” style of natural planting and growth he planted yew, laurel and holly as principal woodland trees. Within this woodland lay the lake and fish pond.

The right hand arch led through to the same corridor on which the drawing room was also sited. The library and drawing room were connected by an ante room which also led out of the front of the house on to the terrace. The corridor at its west end then became an orangery with mosaic tiled floor which led through to the conservatory.

As described already, the front of the house led onto a terrace and promenade which in turn gave access onto parkland. This was landscaped with lawns, plants and shrubs and had long distance views to Saltaire.

Front of the House

Conservatory The Conservatory was a major feature attached at the west end front of the house and was eighty one feet long, forty feet wide and twenty six feet high and built with a dome shaped roof of iron and glass. It had a chequered pattern mosaic tile floor and housed several life sized statues and an

Kitchen Gardens and Green houses The Bradford Observer of 16th January 1873 carried an article on the Hothouses of Milner Field, the introduction of which stated: Milner Field is a new garden – indeed it is yet in the process of being laid out by Mr Marnock. The principal houses are ranged side by side, lying due north to south; they are 34 feet long and 18 feet wide inside measure and are twelve in number.. All these houses open into a covered corridor, so that every house can be entered without exposing it to cold winds. The article then goes on to describe in great detail the arrangements for ventilation, Continued over page...

History heating and watering of the greenhouses, which like the equipment within the house were state of the art for the time. Amongst the greenhouses were those growing ferns, lapageria and roses and there were several forcing houses for plants for the Conservatory and gardens. There were also separate houses including hot and cool orchid houses, a vinery, a melon house, a fig house, a pineapple house and a mushroom cellar. Stables The Seven Ages cartoon of stained glass (right) for Milner Field. Removed from the building at an unknown date.

The stables lay on the Primrose Lane side of the grounds near the Gilstead Lodge entrance to the estate. They are described as being extensive, and near to the house but sufficiently removed not to be intrusive. They contained automatic fodder hoists, sophisticated drainage systems and electric lights as well as storage for tack, hunting equipment and traps and landaus. Royal Visits to Saltaire There were two well documented Royal visits where the royal guests stayed at Milner Field namely those of: • The Prince and Princess of Wales when they opened the Bradford Technical College in June 1882 • Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry of Battenberg when they opened the Royal Jubilee Exhibition in May 1887 The Jubilee Exhibition ran from May 1887 until the end of October 1887. Death of Titus Salt Jr Titus Salt Jnr died of heart disease on the afternoon of Saturday 19th November 1887 only nineteen days after the closing of the Jubilee Exhibition. The heyday of Milner Field was in the period 1873 to 1887 when the Salts were renowned for their lavish entertaining. After the death of Titus Salt Jr, Catherine his wife and George, one of his sons continued to live at the house until 1903. However in

the intervening period and partly because of a trade slump Catherine was forced to sell the business to a syndicate of four Bradford business men, including James Roberts who within nine months became the Managing Director of Salts Mill. Roberts moved into Milner Field in 1903. He and the next two residents of the house, Ernest Gates and A.R (Teddy) Hollins (a later Managing Director of Salts Co who died unexpectedly in 1929) all suffered a series of personal tragedies. This led many people to believe that the house was jinxed. What Became of Milner Field? The house was put up for sale in 1930, but given the series of tragic events affecting all the owners and tenants, it is not surprising that the mansion subsequently failed to sell. Over the years nature reclaimed the grounds and the building fell into disrepair, was stripped of its contents and then of its roof, and before long the site began to be robbed of stone. During the Second World War it was used for grenade practice by the local Home Guard., Whilst the exact date of demolition of the house is not known local legend suggests a date between 1950 and 1959. Structures from the house such as part of the entrance arch and a small section of the mosaic floor to the Conservatory are still visible, as are the foundations to the greenhouses and cellars in the old kitchen gardens. Nowadays ownership of the land has passed to a holding company and discussion and decisions re the kitchen garden area becoming an area of specific scientific interest have taken place. There is still much interest in the local area as to what Milner Field originally looked like and what became of the house and gardens. I hope that this article has gone some way towards satisfying curiosity about Milner Field, which may be gone, but is certainly not forgotten! Alan Cattell - March 2011

Well, look no further from its position overlooking Baildon Moor, in a quiet residential area, Baildon House Nursery is well away from the noise and danger of busy main roads and is the only nursery for 0-5 years in the Baildon area. The cosy 32-place nursery has a closeknit family feel where the experienced and dedicated staff provide a warm, friendly atmosphere. Children can play and learn in a comfortable environment, whilst working towards the same foundation stage level of education provided by school nurseries. Linda Skirrow, Nursery Manager said “Young children show a natural curiosity about the world around them, from babyhood they explore the environment using all their senses, even before children are able to talk they make choices, solve problems and set themselves challenges as they play, eat and interact with others around them.

“Ofsted has recognised the excellence in the way we implement our activities – proof of the wide variety of stimulating experiences which consolidate and extend their understanding of the world”. “The exceptionally high quality of Inclusion is Outstanding”.

“Along with providing an abundance of activities on a daily basis, we encourage and follow your child interests, where the children can learn to explore their environment through activities and experiences, to facilitate their learning through play. We also recognise the importance of how children can understand and respect other communities as well as each other. So, what have the children been getting up to at Baildon House Nursery recently? Staff and children keep busy in their ever-popular nursery gardens, harvesting potatoes, cabbage, tomatoes and sweet corn for the whole of the nursery to enjoy. This year we have planted courgettes, marrows and sweet peppers, which will add some vibrant colours to the garden. We have also planted some colourful flowers to the entrance of the nursery. New History Garden for St Ives Pam Laking, driving force behind the Friends of St Ives, unveils plans for an exciting new History Garden being created in the beautiful St Ives Estate in Bingley. And do ducks really like to eat bread? Pam reveals all. After winning an award of £250,000 from Waste Recycling Enivironmental Ltd (WREN), the Friends of St Ives (FOSI) have been carrying out various improvements to the estate over the last 18 months, supported by Bradford Council’s parks and landscape team. We have improved paths and replanted the edges of Coppice Pond. There’s more seating and bins; a bigger playground with new, imaginative equipment; and many of you enjoy watching birds at our hide and water fowl feeding station. But work is still to be done on two projects: an information centre with classroom facility and a Historic Garden area. The Garden is being planted in the walled area next to the old mansion. These days it’s a residential home for people with disabilities, run by the Elder Homes Care Group. Their director, Alison Messenger, fully supports

this project and has sponsored eight historic species of roses for the garden. We know there have been cultivated gardens at St Ives for many centuries. During the 13th century, when St Ives was owned by Rievaulx Abbey, there was a monastic grange here and the monks grew fruits and herbs. As we researched our project we realised how much people in the past used their flowers and fruits in many ways and that the ‘knowledge of centuries’ was being lost. Three specialists are helping us plan the garden: Jill Saunders (head gardener at East Riddlesden Hall), Hilary Dodson (a specialist in old forms of fruiting trees from northern fruits) and Jane Ramsden (historical botanist). Together we are planning the design and planting of the garden. Later, explanatory leaflets will share the knowledge we’ve discovered with our visitors. We will be planting varieties of flowers, herbs, Continued over page...

heading Community vines, hops and vegetables which date back to the 13th century. Ancient species of apples such as the ‘Cat’s Head’ and ‘Dog’s Snout’, the Louise Bonne pears, and many old species of plums, apricots and cherries will be planted. A mulberry tree donated by Bob Thorpe from Bradford Council will stand, in the traditional way, on a small grassy mound near the entrance. They will be surrounded by fragrant ‘old roses’ such as ‘Rosa Gallica’, ‘Rosa Sancta (known as the ’Holy Rose’ from the 4th century), and a climbing rose of great age, ‘Rambling Rector’, will scramble over the walls smothering them in large clusters of creamy flowers. The garden will be a very special oasis with traditional foxgloves, hollyhocks and lavenders, sheltered by 350-year-old stone walls. We are planning seating ‘bowers’ where you will be able to enjoy the scented honeysuckles, vines and hops. The flowers and rose hips in the autumn should attract birds, insects and butterflies to the garden. There will also be two raised beds so everyone can join in its maintenance.

‘It’s quackers to feed bread to ducks’! Everyone likes to feed ducks. It’s an age-old tradition which we’ve all enjoyed at some time. Unfortunately for St Ives, just too many of you are throwing bread to our resident water fowl at Coppice Pond. In just one day, a fisherman counted 80 bags of bread being thrown into the lake – far too much for the ducks to eat. We believe there is now a decomposing layer of bread at the bottom of the lake which is polluting the water, harming the fish and birdlife there. Bread is not a natural food for ducks and geese. To keep them healthy and nourished Joy and John at Lady B’s Café, with our support, are now selling special wild fowl food. You can buy this in boxes or loose in bags. Please help the fish and ducks at St Ives to remain healthy and fit.

Shipley Councillor update Councillor Kevin Warnes of the Green Party informs us how Shipley’s councillors are supporting community groups across the area in the months ahead. From littering to anti-social behaviour and from ‘The Norwoods’ to Northcliffe here’s what Kevin had to tell Prosider. Contact your councillors Kevin Warnes Tel: 01274 588022 Mobile: 07788 406168 email: kevin.warnes@ bradford.gov.uk Hawarun Hussain Tel: 01274 889158 email: hawarun. hussain@bradford. gov.uk Martin Love Tel: 01274 829287 Mobile: 07765 896855 email: martin.love@ bradford.gov.uk

Having worked closely with the Hirst Wood Regeneration Group of residents for five years, I have found that active community groups make a huge difference to everyone’s quality of life and it is vital that we give them the support that they deserve. In Hirst Wood, the local residents’ group discusses every aspect of local life during its monthly meetings at Vicars Café, ranging from tackling litter to dealing with incidents of anti-social behaviour. The group has also managed ambitious regeneration projects for years, most recently creating a new landscaped open space by Hirst Lock. Local councillors are now helping them to develop plans for a local nature reserve that residents and organised groups will also be able to enjoy. The Saltaire Village Society has been equally active on a wide range of fronts for many years, including the renowned Saltaire Arts Trail and the popular programme of live music in Roberts Park. Your green councillors have recently worked closely with the society to create a new community garden in Silver Square, finding the funds and ensuring that council officers liaised successfully with residents to lift the project off the drawing

board. Councillor Hawarun Hussain said: “This is a wonderful public space that will benefit the whole village.” Exciting developments are also afoot on the Northcliffe side of the Shipley ward. The green councillors are backing the new residents’ group in ‘The Norwoods’, helping them clear derelict ground to transform several overgrown allotments into a community garden and tidy up other dilapidated corners of their neighbourhood as well. New street signs are on the way too, as part of what Councillor Martin Love describes as ‘a brilliant example of grassroots community regeneration’. Nearby, the Friends of Northcliffe have for years organised exciting projects that also bring people together. These have included the annual Rae Gala, the dawn chorus walks and a successful ‘Big Lunch’ picnic by the miniature railway organised in early June very much a case of ‘all aboard’ for a better community life for all.

Farmwatch Scheme From your local Neighbourhood Policing Team In this article, PC Cath Gallimore advises Prosider readers about the Farmwatch scheme and how you can help to reduce crime in your local area Farmwatch is a partnership between the farming community and the police to encourage vigilance and communication. Intelligence is a vital tool in crime reduction and members of the public can assist by providing information no matter how trivial it may seem. If a pattern arises as a result of the information received we can then act upon this and address the issue. By communicating with each other we can help to prevent many crimes from happening in the first place, thus making the community a safer and more crime free area. The aims of the scheme are: •

to help reduce crime and vandalism

strengthen community sprit so that everyone plays their part in protecting their property

report suspicious incidents as they occur

Improve two-way communication between farmers and the police

The Police will work closely with both Lancashire and North West Leeds Rural watch schemes.

to introduce early warning systems to farming and rural areas

Equine News Written by Cath Gallimore, from the Neighbourhood Policing Team In this article PC Cath Gallimore advises Prosider readers on how to keep your horses safe this summer Bingley Neighbourhood Policing area is very large and covers right across the valley from High Eldwick over to Stanbury, a well-populated equine area due to the rural landscape. Community Speedwatch - Volunteers wanted If you are interested in volunteering to help out with Community Speed Watch, contact the Bingley Neighbourhood Officers on 01274 475331

It is very important to me as a Police Officer to keep you informed of any incidents that I feel you should know about. For example some yards have been visited by scrap collectors, which have caused concern. Information I receive can be checked out and researched. I can then let enrolled members know to look out for certain suspicious vehicles. I send out e-mails or use the text alert system that has been set up for members who do not have access to e-mail. This, I hope will reassure members and keep you all informed of what is affecting equine establishments. Please use the facility to contact me with any questions and concerns you may have. There is a lot of information out there that can be very useful to all of us as horse owners.

Road Safety – get in touch with us Are there any areas of concern in relation to road safety, speeding on country lanes? Obstructions on bridleways and highways, double parking or slippery road surfaces? Please think about letting the Bradford Highways department know so they can consider addressing the problem areas. They can be contacted on 01274 431000

Advice on how to keep your horse safe Now that summer is here, many of us are now thinking of more turn out and preparing our fields for grazing by replacing fence posts, walling and gates. Please protect your property and keep horses secure by doing the following: •

Field gate hinges should be the caped or inverted type to prevent easy removal.

Place a Horse Watch sign on your gate and if your horse is micro chipped or freeze branded, put up a sign accordingly.

Make regular checks to see if they have been tampered with.

Mark gates to make them unique to your farm/small holding.

Gates locked with good quality chains or padlocks are more difficult to steal.

Keeping hedges, fences and gates in good repair will help with security and visibility.

Please keep a watch full eye on any horses out in the fields and report any concerns to your local Police.

For further information, contact the Neighbourhood Police team on 07736086704 or email: Hanpt3@westyorkshire.pnn.police.uk

Taking a look back in time at Stanbury Hill

Stanbury Hill, Bingley Moor – how it might have been

The Stanbury Hill Project is a joint venture between Bingley and District Local History Society and the Division of Archaeological, Geographical and Environmental Sciences at the University of Bradford. Established in 2008 and financed by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £49,400, it is run by local volunteers, with University staff offering advice, equipment, training and expertise as required.

rocks alone numbers over 300! Stanbury Hill itself is a distinct feature: a hill with three successive summits running WNW-ESE. A broad sweep of dry well-drained ground overlooking Fenny Shaw Beck to the north and the slack of White Flush to the south, the hill would have been an ideal place for prehistoric settlement with broad views all round and streams providing an important supply of fresh water on both sides (above).

The essential archaeological work has been carried out almost entirely by local people, mostly amateurs, who have not only participated in the act of archaeological discovery, but through their experience and various training opportunities, have also picked up valuable skills.

On this small hill less than 0.25km2 in area is the largest concentration of cup-and-ringmarked rocks on Bingley Moor (above, right), believed to date from the Late Neolithic/ Early Bronze Age, at least 11 possible Early Bronze Age burial or clearance cairns (above, far right), several lines of possible prehistoric walling, as well as the find-spots for characteristic Late Neolithic flint blades – all dating from c. 2500 BC.

Stanbury Hill lies on Bingley Moor, on the S flank of Rombalds Moor, overlooking the Aire Valley. Rombalds Moor is already well-known for its considerable evidence of prehistoric activity, ranging from Mesolithic campsites and workshops through to Late Neolithic/ Early Bronze Age cup-and-ringmarked rocks, cairnfields and ring cairns, Bronze Age stone circles to Roman roads. It easily contains the largest concentration of prehistoric sites in the region: the total of cup-and-ring-marked

The aim of the project is to try and understand the site, what it was used for and what sort of landscape it existed in, by means of topographic survey, geophysical and palaeo-environmental investigation and excavation. One of the first jobs was to start from scratch, constructing a complete 3D contour map of the hill. Continued over page...

Stanbury Hill, Bingley Moor, an example of a possible cairn

Next came geophysics, or ‘geofizz’ to give it its more popular name. For surveying purposes, the hill was divided into 119 20m x 20m grids, all of which were subject to magnetometric survey. A small number of selected grids were also resistance surveyed This revealed a number of ‘features’, including areas that appear to contain clusters of what might well be pits, and several linear features which could be palaeochannels, ditches or the remains of walling – possibly indicating enclosures or the boundaries of a settlement. All 119 grids have also been fieldwalked by volunteers, identifying a total of 215 features of one kind or another, a good number of which will require further investigation. Excitingly, recent work has uncovered possible Mesolithic material which, if confirmed, pushes the date of the site as far back as c. 7000 BC, and a broken flint blade with possible ‘sickle gloss’ (right) – fine scratches produced by cutting

grass or cereals, suggesting early agricultural activity on the hill. The Project is also holding an Open Day on Saturday, 23 July, as part of the British Archaeology Festival. There will be a public lecture from 10.30-12.00.p.m. at Church House, Bingley, followed by a conducted tour of the site and excavations from 1.00-4.00. pm – both bookable through the contacts below. If you would like more information on the Project, to book places for the Open Day or even to join us, please contact either: Dave Spencer (Project Secretary) idle.moor@gmail.com 01274-585886 Or Keith Boughey (Project Director) keith_boughey@hotmail.com 01274-592736 when we would be delighted to hear from you! A final word: the project simply would not have been possible without the work of enthusiastic local volunteers (below). In fact, that has been one of the greatest bonuses of the project: the involvement of members of the local community in their heritage. Our work continues. K. Look Good Feel Good Health, Beauty & Style

look good, feel good

Welcome to the Sunshine 2011 style! Prosider’s Beauty Editor Lauren Ives, advises on how to keep your skin safe and healthy throughout the summer months, here’s what she has to say. It’s been a bad winter and the need for a holiday is ever present…some sunshine and sangria is always welcome. Mixed with the pressure of looking good, being cool and avoiding the zig-zag tan lines…. it’s usually hard pushed to look “glamorous” on the beach. Here again, Prosider come to the rescue, with your vital guide to preparation and maintenance before and after your sun seeking escape to whatever shores you choose this year, be it UK or the Far East! Skin…. the biggest organ on your body, one that we all take for granted, abuse and never repair! In the summer months, your skin is susceptible to so many harmful rays we need to at least try to maintain its productivity and youthful looks. SPF (sun protection factor) is your key to healthy, youthful skin and is something that a lot of people neglect. For fair skin you need to use up to the SPF value to at least a 30SPF. This will stop your skin from being effected by the harmful rays that can burn the pigment in your skin. Remember, that although you are using SPF, it does not stop you from tanning- so don’t worry- you won’t come back as white as you went. Medium-Dark skin tones can use around SPF 20-25. The melanin in the skin is what your body uses as a barrier, obviously the fairer you are, the less protection your body has and the darker you are the more it will produce to protect. Something to bear in mind is that although you feel like the UK is never bursting with mega heat, the rays still affect the skin in the same way. So cover up, even if you’re in Whitby. When you have been in the sun all day, you need to re-generate your skin of moisture. Use a good, thick moisturiser, preferably with

Aloe Vera or Coco Butter to sooth and cool. A good trick is to put the cream on after a warm shower, this enables it to absorb quicker. Before visiting your chosen get-a-way, preparing the skin is also something we fail to do in between packing, sorting the kids out and making sure we don’t forget the passport. Two weeks before going away, simply exfoliating your skin every time you shower/bathe is just as effective. This removes any dead skin cells, helps SPF and after sun to absorb and also makes those legs look brilliant in the waves. Waxing is always a good move, there’s nothing worse than having to shave your sun burnt legs in the shower on a night. The final note is your hair! It is one of the only things we can’t particularly change or enhance with creams and potions whilst on holiday, however a spray leave in conditioner, spritzed through the hair and combed back into a ponytail will protect and moisturise. Hope you find this advice useful, have a fabulous holiday, stay safe and remember your SPF! Lauren

Six-steps to beautiful skin About your Arbonne consultant Based in Cottingley, Caroline Towers is an independent consultant for Arbonne covering the whole of the UK. Arbonne is a global company, which has been operating in the USA for 31 years. They have recently expanded their brand to the UK offering a range of products to include anti-ageing, men’s, baby, sun care, skincare, cosmetics, detox spa and food supplements, which will help keep you healthy both inside and out.

Close your eyes and ask yourself this important question: “Do I look and feel as good as I possibly could?” Prosider’s resident beauty expert, Lauren Ives, has been considering this question and thinks that most women would struggle with the answer. In this beauty special she reviews Arbonne’s RE9 comprehensive anti-ageing skin care range, and reports on her findings below. For this issue I have been lucky enough to test some of the most luxurious and effective products on the market. At Arbonne, they want people to look and feel great by incorporating premium skin care products, which are based on herbal and botanical ingredients, into their daily lives. Arbonne RE9 Advanced places nine elements into one skin care regime, and is proved to start working within 24 hours of application. The whole six-step process was handed to me with a slight feeling of dread. How was I going to fit all these products into my beauty regime? The answer – very easily! The products come in sophisticated gold and amber packaging, all with individual pumps and anti-bacterial tubes. Arbonne Consultant Caroline Towers Tel: 07944162390 email: carolinetowers@myarbonne.co.uk web: www.carolinetowers.myarbonne.co.uk

Step 1 – cleanser A silky product with an orange scent. Mixed with a little warm water it lathers up wonderfully and makes a lovely cleansing facial. Step 2 – regenerating toner With skin still warm I spritzed with the toner on. Its light, wonderfully smelling mist prepares the skin for the next element of the regime by filling it with Vitamins A, C and E. Step 3 - intensive renewal serum A light blend of collagen-supporting ingredients, this re-charged my skin and made it soft and smooth. It diminished fine lines and gave a visibly firmer skin tone. Step 4 - corrective eye cream was next. I didn’t want this to be a heavy cream which would drag the delicate skin round my eyes. This product didn’t disappoint. It diminishes dark circles and supports the collagen in the delicate eye area. Step 5 - restorative day crème with SPF 20. This was a light, white cream base, dispensed from a pump bottle to avoid bacteria from everyday use. It has a high concentration of moisture-enhancing properties and shields your skin from harmful UV rays. Step 6 - night repair crème. Ultra hydrating – Vitamin C and collagen work on the deepest layers of the skin whilst you are resting. Verdict: I found all the products left me feeling very pampered, and although only 26, my skin definitely felt firmer, smoother with less noticeable dark circles around the eyes. In our new regular feature, Dr Simon Gazeley, a GP at Springfield Surgery in the Canalside Healthcare Centre in Bingley, will be sharing with Prosider readers exclusive advice on topical health issues and giving his tips for a healthy life.

Simon trained as a doctor in Newcastle, has worked in the north east and Australia before coming to Yorkshire in 2000 to finish his GP training. He has worked at Springfield Surgery for the past eight years and lives in Ilkley with his wife (also a GP) and four children. In our regular health feature, Dr Simon Gazeley, a GP at Springfield Surgery, is sharing with Prosider readers exclusive advice on topical health issues. In this article Simon notes that TV and radio are telling us we’re all getting fatter and unhealthier, and so are our children. Obesity is something I’ve a personal interest in: I was developing a rather generous middle-aged spread and felt it was time to do something about it. Several months later, and a few stone lighter – and I feel better for it. So this month I discuss obesity, and what options you have if you want to lose weight. Obesity is a common problem. Doctors use a measurement called body mass index (BMI) to assess your weight. This is calculated by dividing your weight in kilos by your height in metres squared. If the answer is over 25 you are classed as overweight, and at BMI 30, you are obese. In the UK over one in three adults is overweight, and one in four is obese. At least one in seven children is obese.

thyroid disease, but this is very uncommon. Usually the simple answer is eating too much, not exercise enough, or both. What can you do if you’re overweight? 1. Eat less food. Write down absolutely everything that passes your lips for one day. That spoonful of sugar, blob of mayo, and even the milk in your tea all add to your dietary intake. You will easily see where to cut back the avoidable calories. But still eat regularly and don’t skip meals. 2. Eat better food. Check the labels for sugar and fat content. Saturated fat (red meat, sausages or burgers) should be kept to an absolute minimum. Complex carbohydrates (potatoes, rice, pasta, oats) and proteins (chicken, fish, beans) are good at keeping you feeling full. 3. Drink less alcohol. There are as many calories in two and a half pints of beer or three small glasses of wine as in a Big Mac. If you’re drinking most nights, that’s a lot of extra calories.

Why does it matter? Being overweight significantly increases your chances of developing high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, cancers and even dementia.

4. Exercise at least three times a week. It doesn’t have to be marathons – one of my patients ditched the car and refused to take lifts, and it worked.

Patients often ask me whether weight problems are genetic, or if they have a different ‘metabolic rate’. Weight problems can be related to medical conditions such as

Commando Fit... am I mad? Turning the tide of the inevitable middle age spread.

Prosider Editor Simon Harrup accepted a challenge to get Commando Fit. In this first instalment, he tells Prosider readers about his first steps to fitness. I went for a full health check before I started to make sure I was up to the challenge. Other than being overweight and generally unfit, I am OK. I weighed in at 93kg or 14.6st in old money. I haven’t weighed myself again since so will have a proper weigh in for the next update. I was a little nervous before the first session and got an early night so I would be fresh as a daisy at 6am the following morning. First Session I arrived a little early and met some of the group members and the instructor near the bridge leading into Roberts Park. My first impressions were that they were a friendly bunch of all ages and fitness levels; the instructor took the time to talk to me and soon put me at ease. Each person is given a coloured bib denoting his or her fitness level, green for super fit, blue for average and red for beginners (unfit), that’s me. Once everybody had arrived we set off at a gentle jog into the park. The instructor carries your car keys and enough water for everybody to re-hydrate when needed, so no need to worry about carrying anything. After a few warm up exercises we began the session. You will be encouraged to push yourself but the instructor will keep their eye on you and make sure you are working at your fitness level. We all stayed together but the fitter amongst the group were pushed harder by doing more reps or running further with more varied exercises thrown in. I found the session tough but very enjoyable (if it was easy then it wouldn’t really be doing me any good, would it?). Certainly more sociable than going to a gym and training with others and an instructor is very motivating. I was a little wobbly afterwards but wide-awake and ready for the day ahead, AND it was still only 07:30am.

62

I have only completed four sessions so far but already feel better in myself. I will continue with my challenge and hope to shed two stone over the coming months. I would definitely recommend Commando Fit to anybody of any fitness level, getting up and out into the fresh air at that time of day, whatever the weather is sure to boost to your energy levels and make you feel good about yourself. A bit about the session The training sessions last for a whole hour around West Yorkshire Parks and Venues and are designed to burn the maximum amount of calories within that time, but at a level you can sustain throughout. The sessions are graded according to your fitness levels and you work in a group that matches your health and fitness status. You must complete a health questionnaire before commencing which you can download and bring along or simply turn up and complete before your first class (ensure you arrive 15 minutes early for administration). The minimum age is 16 and providing you are in good health and physically able there is no maximum! Until next time ……

Elitephysio is a new physiotherapy & sports massage practice located at Cottingley manor consulting rooms. Our practitioners all work within elite performance sport and collectively have extensive experience in managing all aspects of musculoskeletal injury. Here’s the second in our new series by our resident sports writer and physiotherapist, Ian Blackburn, owner of Elitephysio in Cottingley Manor. Ian’s last article was on running injuries and this time he turns his attention to cycling. Ian has worked with world and Tour de France champions, and in this feature he focuses on getting the most out of your cycling training without injury. Injury-free cycling for beginners and professionals Cycling provides many of you with the opportunity to exercise and experience the challenging terrain of the Yorkshire region.

For each individual there is often a purpose to cycling, from a cost and time efficient means of transport to serious competitive sport. The popularity of cycling is demonstrated through the big business spectacle of world events such as the Tour de France along with healthcare directives promoting the virtues of this low impact activity. Like most recreational athletes cyclists display the same dedication to riding as their elite level counterparts, and whilst it is not as simplistic nor energy-consuming as running (running is three times more energy demanding) the current trend has seen many individuals turning to cycling as their preferred activity and it’s often those with a disposable income who can afford this potentially expensive past-time. After the mid-1990s boom in mountain biking, road cycling is currently experiencing a renaissance. Innovation and technology have brought us design and materials from the space-age with carbon fibre and exotic metals the desired choice for most riders. Owning such equipment is not cheap with prices frequently reaching several thousand pounds. Peer pressure and media hype helps identify preferred brands with many riders often categorising equipment based on market trends and exclusivity.

As in all sports there are inherent risks. Falls and crashes are commonplace. Competition riders quickly remount and carry on with skin abrasions and even fractures. Whilst this is often regarded as ‘part of the sport’ the risk is multiplied many times over when you consider that, at the top level, speeds in excess of 50mph are commonplace. Amongst those committed to serious cycling I often see repetitive strain and postural issues at my clinic. Neck and low back pain dominate due to prolonged positions whilst hip and knee issues are frequently attributed to riding with high gears or excessive hill work. Fortunately many of these problems can be rectified very quickly through physiotherapy, massage and positional changes. It is essential that advice is sought from individuals familiar with the unique demands

of cycling and the potential variability of riders. If addressed correctly your improved performance should be significant and make the investment of time and often serious money more easily justified. It is however worth considering that a professional cyclist would excel on any bike if it were fitted correctly –reinforcing the statement that both a £100 and a £4,000 bike are only as good as the rider pedalling them. Ian will be writing a feature for us in every issue, so if you are a sports enthusiast and would like impartial advice from an expert, be sure to pick up a copy of Prosider.

Look good, feel good

Get FIT not FAT – a journey to fitness Located next to the pharmacy on Wilsden Road, Harden, is the Wellbeing Suite, which offers exclusive personal training and a health assessment centre using state of the art technology. Kim Devine was very nervous about embarking on a new fitness regime but plucked up courage to work with personal trainer Sara Greenwood to achieve her fitness goals. Kim’s challenge was to fit into an outfit she wore several years ago before her children came into this world. With Sara’s help she is hoping to wear the outfit for a special night out in July. Here she shares with Prosider readers how she got on. Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror and wondered how it would feel to be strong, confident, fit, healthy and not be afraid to exercise? Well, that was me until I signed up to some sessions with Sara at the recently opened Wellbeing Suite in Harden. I had always dreamt of being toned, fit and slim so I could wear fitted dresses to show off my curvaceous figure. After having two children and not exercising (apart from walking to school and back four times a day), I decided enough was enough! I seriously need to tone up and lose weight. So I thought now would be a great time to boost my confidence and set a goal for myself. Before having children I used to go to a gym, but to be honest I never really enjoyed it. I didn’t have the confidence to go out jogging on my own; I’d never tried it so didn’t think I

Personal trainer Sara Greenwood

could actually do it. Fad diets didn’t work for me and I struggled with weight-loss groups due to my love of food. I was very nervous about embarking on a new fitness regime and didn’t really know what to expect. I asked the same old questions as before; can I do this? Will I ever be the same weight I was before the kids came along? Will I ever shift my excess body fat and bingo wings? When I visited Sara for the first time, I was impressed that she did a thorough health check for cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body fat and weight, peak flow measurements, strength, fitness and flexibility testing. A report is provided after your tests identifying any areas you may need to work on and also the areas you have done well in! I started training with Sara three times a week. We would work on various techniques, including the popular Power-Plate, as used by Dannii Minogue. Her trainer said: “Mums I work with feel more toned within 4-6 weeks and find it invigorating, leaving each class on a high.” The Power-Plate is great to get the muscles alive again! By using various moves on the machine, the power-plate uses vibrating technology for full body fitness in a shorter

time span. Used by A-list celebrities and sports enthusiasts, the Power-Plate really does make you feel like you’ve run a marathon! We also indulged in aerobic exercise using a fit-ball, kettlebells, rowing machine, boxercise and jogging – not forgetting those difficult stomach muscle exercises. After only a few sessions, I really did feel like I was accomplishing something. I felt stronger and more confident with my body weight and was in control of my health and fitness level. First and foremost I loved the Power-Plate, followed closely by Boxercise and then jogging (and everything else in between). I used to do Boxercise in a class full of women, but felt intimidated by those class members who were more confident than me. But in a one-to-one session I felt I could really let go. The jogging was fantastic; something I had previously never encountered. Sara took me on a jog around Harden, through St Ives and back down to the studio. Afterwards I felt fantastic and realised that I DID have it in me! I could go out jogging – ON MY OWN! So now I enjoy jogging three times a week with friends and sometimes on my own. So what have I achieved by working with Sara?

The Wellbeing Suite is run by Sara Greenwood, who has lived in the village for over six years with her husband, dog and now baby girl Abby. With a degree in Sport and Exercise Science she has worked in the fitness industry for 12 years working in commercial gyms, private hotel gyms, corporate fitness suites and personal training studios throughout Yorkshire. In recent years she has focused on conducting health checks for both personal training clients and within a wellbeing initiative for a national law firm. Her personal training business ran for five years predominantly in North Yorkshire, working with clients in their own bespoke designed gyms and also in commercial gym environments. But following the birth of her daughter in 2010 she decided to relocate her business to West Yorkshire to realise her dream of running her own studio and to be closer to home. What the Wellbeing Suite offers: •

Hour-long one2one, one2two and one2three personal training sessions, so you can train individually or with friends. Including power plate, boxercise, rowing, free weights and kettlebells, ensuring you are always challenged and invigorated.

Thirty-minute power plate sessions.

Circuit classes and running clubs for you to take part in with friends and have fun whilst exercising. Classes are for a maximum of five people and are at a time to suit you.

Health checks offering a full MOT in the privacy of the suite and at a time convenient to you.

I am definitely more confident, more toned, less fat, stronger and have personally made a friend in Sara, I hope for life. I cannot recommend Sara enough, and hope that she is successful with her new venture. She really has changed me for the better. As for my special night out… I know I will be wearing that dress!

History

The Hidden Valley

Harden, Wilsden and Cullingworth’s best kept secret?

Images courtesy of Graham Hall Archives & Matthew Imison Photography Contributors Paul Davis of Harden and Bingley Park Homes Dorothy Tattersall and Peter Smith. The Editor Prosider thanks Mick Walmsely of Woodbank Nurseries - Harden who has provided and given permission for images from his archive collection to be published to illustrate Alan Cattells article. Mick has an avid interest in the history of the local area. In the cafe at Woodbank Nurseries there is a display of a number of images of the Harden and Bingley area which patrons can view and if interested, purchase.

In this article Alan Cattell explores the history of an area which is still little known to many people living in the Aire Valley. He will do so by concentrating on describing Goit Stock Waterfall and the Goit Stock Pleasure Resort. Introduction into a deep pool below, the whole embosomed in a luxuriant and lofty screen of Over the last 200 years the Hidden Valley trees, making a perfect fairy dell, which is lit has been the site of a cotton mill, a beauty up by the slanting sunbeams with charming spot from the mid 1800’s and a much visited effect” tourist attraction in the 1920’s. The valley extends from Hallas Bridge, and past Goit Stock Waterfall at one end, down to what was the site of Goit Stock Cotton Mill (now a Residential Park Homes Estate) at the other. It can be accessed from either end by following Harden Beck through the woods. The area was primarily owned by the Ferrand family as part of the St Ives Estate until they sold it in 1919. Goit Stock Waterfall Access to this renowned beauty spot was restricted during the 18th and early 19th Century’s. Speight (1898) Chronicles of Old Bingley) states: “The Goit Stock waterfall is in Mr Ferrands private grounds. It is a beautiful retired spot, the white crested water falling over a hard rocky cliff about twenty feet high,

This sentiment and flowery style of writing may seem very old-fashioned to the modern reader, however the beauty of the waterfall is undisputed and nowadays still continues to delight visitors. The Airedale Poet In earlier times another writer with poetic ambitions waxed lyrical about Goit Stock. In 1820 John Nicholson, later to be known as the Airedale Poet moved to Harden Beck where he gained the practical friendship of the Horsfall family at Goit Stock Mill, who helped to support him. His wife also helped his writing ambitions by working at a local worsted mill during the time he was composing “Airedale” the poetic work for which he is perhaps most famous. Horsfall –Turner (1897) in Ancient Bingley notes “He (Nicholson) composed when wandering on moonlight nights along the beck-side,

History especially near Goit Stock Waterfall”. Seemingly Nicholson found the peace and tranquillity of the time of day and of the walk to be an aid to his writing and meditation. In a poem about the area he makes reference to the peaceful surroundings and the waterfall (cataract) when he observes: Here may the contemplative mind Trace Nature and her beauties o’er And meditation rest reclin’d Lull’d by the neighbouring cataract’s roar Nicholson on completing Airedale moved from Harden and worked as a woolsorter for three years at Hewenden Mill. He spent time after this roaming the country including living in London, promoting and selling his poetry. He eventually returned to Yorkshire and worked for Titus Salt in Bradford. He died of exposure in 1843 after falling in the River Aire while crossing by the stepping stones at was later to be Saltaire . Goit Stock Cotton Mill – A Chronological History It is not the intention of the article to give detailed history of the cotton mill as this will be done in a future Prosidver publication. However, the key events were:1802 Benjamin Ferrand sets Timothy Horsfall up in business by building a mill for him in the Goit Stock Valley next to Harden Beck 1823 The mill which was originally three storey is raised to four using hydraulic presses – an innovation at the time 1848 Demise of cotton spinning in the area. Goit Stock Mill machinery, water wheel, steam engine and boilers advertised for auction in the Bradford Observer and Leeds Mercury. 1855 Water wheel, a Cornish boiler, power looms, carts and horses advertised for auction in the Bradford Observer 1865 Henry Beldon a nationally renowned poultry breeder and exhibitor rented the old mill building to rear poultry in free range conditions 1880

The remainder of the 19th Century saw an increase in visitors from the Bradford and Leeds areas to local beauty spots such as

Druids Altar, Shipley Glen, the Harden Valley and Goit Stock, particularly at weekends. William Ferrand who was now resident at St Ives was not keen on unwelcome visitors tramping across his private land and therefore put in place a legal way of limiting access. Permission from the Estate Office had to be sought before access was granted. This situation carried on until the Ferrand family sold off Goit Stock Woods and the old mill building and site in 1919. Happy Valley Pleasure Resort In 1920 a tourist attraction was opened up in the grounds of the old mill site. Called Happy Valley Pleasure Resort – Goit Stock, the main attraction was the adaptation of the old mill to house a purpose built dance hall on one floor and a large 1000+ seat restaurant/ cafe serving refreshment during the day, on another floor. On the ground floor there was an alfresco and more informal tea-pavilion for light refreshments which served visitors on terraces overlooking a lawn where outdoor dancing took place. An advertising brochure of the time claimed: “Many factors combine to make this Popular Pleasure Resort, which is situated in the beautiful Harden Valley, a centre of great attraction for Holiday parties. Delightful walks and richly wooded slopes abound in all directions, whilst the majestic waterfalls never fail to captivate the eye in regions of enchanting beauty. Spacious

Attractions in the Grounds The grounds provided amusements which catered for all family age groups. These included a Childrens Corner and paddling pool, swings and a small toboggan run. The old mill lake was turned into a boating lake, whilst other parts of the grounds offered a bowling green and miniature golf course to visitors. An aviary and monkey house were built on site and there was an ornate bandstand used by the Wlisden Brass Band to play concerts during the day. For those who wanted to experience the woods and grounds there were kiosks selling snacks and for those wanting to sleep under canvas, a purpose built Holiday Camp was available. Fishing in the lake and Harden Beck were also provided for those interested in “the great outdoors”. Saturdays and Seasonal Events Costume Concert Parties, popular at the time, gave performances in the grounds

The Happy Valley Fire Disaster 1927 The resort became an increasingly popular attraction as the 1920’s progressed. So much so, that an estimated 20,000 people visited the site on Easter Monday 17th April 1927. Unfortunately, disaster struck Happy Valley on that day. A report in the Keighley News on Saturday 23rd April 1927 carried the headline Destructive Fire at Goit Stock - £10000 Damage. At about 11.55 a guest who was staying with the Manager, Mr J Dewhirst at his house in the grounds noticed flames coming from the tearoom. He immediately rang the Bingley Fire Brigade. The flames spread so rapidly that within half an hour only the four bare walls of the former mill building were left standing. By the time the Fire Brigade arrived the floors and the roof had already caved in and there was little hope of saving the building They also had difficulty in getting an adequate supply of water to douse the flames. Despite Continued over page...

History these difficulties, the Fire Brigade subdued the flames by 3 am. The heat of the blaze was so intense that it melted the glass in the windows of the building.

Band estimated that the instruments and music destroyed were worth £200.

The cause of the fire had not been established but it was noted that the ballroom had been “made festive with bunting and streamers for a Carnival held during the day on Easter Monday”. It was thought that perhaps a lighted cigarette had been thrown away and caused decorations to smoulder and eventually burst into flame.

Despite attempts at refurbishment after the fire, things were never the same again for the enterprise. One of the last attempts at reviving interest was a ten round boxing match held at Goit Stock between Percy Vere (note the play on words!) of Crossflatts and Billy Shaw of Leeds (who won) in May 1932.

Amongst items lost in the blaze were the instruments of the resident Dance Band and also the instruments of the Wilsden Brass Band who had been playing in the grounds all day for the enjoyment of the crowds. Mr J White , Conductor of the Wilsden Brass

In October 1932 Happy Valley and its effects came under the auctioneers hammer. Amongst items sold were: the rebuilt ballroom, the boxing ring, the monkey house, monkeys, ponies donkeys and love-birds. The estate including the pleasure ground was sold for £2700.

The Demise of Happy Valley Pleasure Grounds

The Hidden Valley 1932 to 2011 Since the 1930’s the site has passed through several hands and ideas for use of the land for forestry, building development and even a country gentleman’s club have been mooted. Hard work by previous owners including George Reynolds, and later David and Adriane Sharples, who bought the site in 1979, have preserved the site as a desirable area for residential Park Homes, touring and static caravans.

Goit Stock Mill Ballroom

Current owners of Harden and Bingley Park Homes Estate, Paul Davis and Julie Dunham have further developed the site which continues to provide an attractive environment for visitors and permanent residents alike. Both see their role as custodians of the site rather than solely owners. Some of the original mill-workers cottages still exist alongside a meadow in which there is a single ancient chimney which has a slight lean to it. This is all that remains of the original Goit Stock Mill. As the title of a brief history of the area in 1993, author Alana Kent posed the question “What’s that Chimney up There?” My answer is that it is a beacon that calls those in the know to the Hidden Valley and marks a Happy Valley where adults and children alike have enjoyed and continue to enjoy some of the best scenery that our local area has to offer. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Once again we are pleased to have Media Student Heyla Arbabha, who is only 17 writing movie reviews for us. This time she has swash-buckled her way to Cineworld Bradford to watch the ever-popular Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, here’s what she had to say about it.

PIRATE FACTS! Penelope Cruz was beginning to show her pregnancy bump nearing the end of filming, so her sister, Monica Cruz, doubled for her in the longdistance shots and Penelope filmed the close-ups. Johnny Depp spent $64,200 from his own pocket on waterproofs for 500 crew members to protect them from the cold. Keith Richards and Johnny Depp tried to persuade Mick Jagger to audition as an elder pirate. A celebrity impersonator was able to gain access to the UK film set by dressing up as Captain Jack.

UK release: Out now (12A) Cast: Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush When I first heard that Walt Disney Pictures were releasing a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, I groaned. When I found out that most of the original cast wouldn’t be in it either, I groaned even louder. When I watched the trailer about a month ago I was horrified, and said that I probably wouldn’t even go and see it. Yet there I was, sitting in Bradford Cineworld, watching Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and having a rather nice time. The first 30 minutes are incredible with slick stunts and superb camerawork. I chose to watch the film with 3D glasses (cost 80p and you can keep them for future films). It made a big difference seeing the special effects in their full glory but children may have some trouble with the glasses. I had been dubious about this movie because the third Pirates film, At World’s End, in my opinion, was incredibly dull. A bizarre storyline, a predictable ending and too many special effects made the film tedious. Whereas Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl, the first Pirates movie, swash buckled its way onto our screens in 2003, received praise from critics, and even those who didn’t like the movie were impressed by Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow – the pirate with a love of the sea and rum, for which Depp was Oscar-nominated.

www.prosider.co.uk - ShopLocal - Subscribe for FREE today!

Then along came Dead Man’s Chest in 2006 and At World’s End in 2007 – rounding off the trilogy nicely. Now On Stranger Tides has been released, with a new director, some new cast and a new story, which thankfully is slightly less confusing than the last one. The setting, as ever, is breathtaking – the locations are California, Hawaii, the UK and Puerto Rico. Sparrow is in London to find an impostor who has been impersonating him in order to gather a crew to help find the Fountain of Youth, a fountain that will give life to whoever drinks from the spring. Sparrow soon finds that the impostor is none other than Angelica (Penélope Cruz), Jack’s former lover and daughter of Blackbeard (Ian McShane), a ruthless pirate who also wants the Fountain of Youth for himself.

A fierce battle follows between Angelica, Sparrow, Blackbeard, the British Navy and the Spanish to see who can reach the Fountain of Youth first. Of the original cast members we still have Johnny, and Kevin McNally who plays Sparrow’s loyal companion Joshamee Gibbs. Geoffrey Rush is back, playing Hector Barbossa, although he’s not the evil captain you once knew. He’s since become Privateer Barbossa, now employed by the British Navy. I preferred Barbossa as a villain, but Rush still does a magnificent job playing Barbossa in all his glory.

WIN

Cinema Tickets & Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides merchandise

Keira Knightley has been replaced by Penelope Cruz, playing Angelica, and what a magnificent job she does too. She holds her own in a film that is mostly dominated by a male cast. The chemistry between her and Depp is just right, and their love/ hate relationship on screen injects humour into the film, as well as developing Jack Sparrow’s character. Ian McShane plays Blackbeard well, but I still think Geoffrey Rush just beats him in the acting stakes. Paul Bazely, aka Troy of the ITV comedy Benidorm made a surprise appearance playing Salaman, a pirate who helps Sparrow. It was strange to see him wearing a pirate hat, acting with the likes of Cruz and Depp, instead of wearing Speedos and sitting poolside with Denise Welch. We also see cameos from Richard Griffiths as King George II and Keith Richards as Jack’s father, Captain Teague. This film has many laugh-out-loud moments, and it’s good to see that Pirates hasn’t lost that genius streak of mixing comedy with adventure. Hans Zimmer once again scores the music beautifully, capturing both the action and the slower moments. Overall, I’m giving Stranger Tides 7 out of 10. Though I enjoyed it more than At World’s End, there really is no comparison between this film and the original Pirates movies. It’s rated 12A (under-12s must be accompanied by an adult), but I wouldn’t take anybody under the age of ten, unless they’ve seen the other three and weren’t scared. One particular moment made me jump about ten feet in the air – so watch out.

New Asian Cuisine in Silsden In the last edition of Prosider, Deshi a new restaurant and takeaway in Silsden specialising in traditional Bangladeshi cooking, was featured as providing value for money and quality food to customers throughout the Aire Valley and beyond. Deshi specialities including fish curries and fish kufta (kebabs) were reviewed by customers as being different, aromatic and tasty choices from the main menu. In this edition of Prosider, the Chef at Deshi provides a basic recipe for a fish kufta which readers can make and sample for themselves. Deshi have recently also catered for after match food and helped to sponsor football shirts for a Silsden AFC Ladies Testimonial match, and a brief match report is provided below. Fish Kufta -Recipe and Instructions Ingredients Cod (fish) Mixed spice powder Vegetable oil Coriander Salt

Asked why customers should consider a trip to Deshi for a meal the owners summed up their dining experience:

“We offer quality food and really good personal service in a friendly atmosphere, where nothing is too much trouble. Well we would say that, wouldn’t we!” But why not see for yourselves and give us a try... our regular return customers did!

Mix in a bowl Quarter tablespoon salt 2 tablespoons of oil Half tablespoon of mixed spice powder Add fresh coriander and stir This will make the spicy sauce. To this add cod and marinade for 1hour. Then fry on a pan with oil for 5 minutes or until done. Simple but very tasty! Deshi Sponsors shirts for local ladies Testimonial Football Match To celebrate14 consecutive seasons each of playing for Silsden A F C Ladies a Testimonial match was played at the ASDA Foundation Stadium on 15th May 2011 for Carrie Nuttall and Victoria Ellis.

The Silsden AFC Ladies Current XI captained by Carrie, possibly for the last time, was successful in beating Silsden AFC Ladies Vintage XI by 7 – 1, with Vicki scoring two goals. The Vintage XI made up of former players from the last 14 seasons, showed plenty of technical ability, but were beaten by a younger, fitter side. Following the match players, officials & spectators were treated to food catered for by Deshi with both the standard and vegetarian options receiving rave reviews from all who sampled them. Besides doing the catering, Deshi helped make the event possible by sponsoring the shirts worn by the Vintage XI on the day, which will be retained as a change strip for the coming season & used next year when another reunion match seems certain to happen. At Deshi everyone’s a winner!

Bingley MOT and Repair Centre opened its doors in 1993. The present owner, Simon Cochrane joined the company at the tender age of 17 as a motor mechanic apprentice. Simon went on to buy the MOT and Repair Centre in 1999, and has taken the garage from strength to strength, to make it what it is today. The team at Bingley MOT consists of Simon and his right hand man, Tim Oates, who is manager and oversees the staff on the shopfloor. Other staff are: Matthew Taylor, who joined the company in 2000; Ashley Roberts, a qualified motor mechanic; and Joe Carr who is on an apprenticeship scheme.

and get paid! Electrotect Renewable Energies Ltd is a family-run Bradford business which specialises in solar photovoltaic renewable energy installations in homes and businesses. The owner, Daniel Lang, regularly advises people on how to apply for the FiTs scheme and the expected rate of financial return.

Customer Satisfaction Guaranteed! Electrotect’s customers have recently been surveyed by IWA.BIZ (Independent Warranty Association). They have successfully achieved 100% customer satisfaction for 2010 - 2011.

Daniel said: “We believe we have a responsibility to the environment to cut down CO2 emissions and the FiTs scheme has made micro-generation accessible to a far wider range of people.” Electrotect are also looking to introduce their new 250 watt high output Suntech ‘Black Pearl” modules. A new generation high-efficiency module, powered by a new generation of crystalline silicon cells, the Black Pearl modules achieve up to 15.2% conversion efficiency, which is well above the 13% to 14% efficiency of conventional polycrystalline solar modules. This means they are better suited to diffused lighting conditions, which occur regularly in the UK. Daniel added: “We have several happy and satisfied customers in the Bingley, Baildon and Harden areas of Bradford and we will happily

arrange for you to speak to them should you be looking for feedback.”

Convert sunlight into electricity and the government will give you an annual cash back sum of up to £1750 per year So, how do you do this? By generating your own electricity using low carbon or renewable sources such as wind turbines or solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, you can receive up to £1750 per year from the government’s new cash back plan, called FiTs (feed in tariffs). What are FiTs? The FiTs scheme, which was recently introduced, offers the incentive of a clean energy cash-back plan for participants. The scheme makes regular payments to households or communities who are generating their own electricity. Households are paid 43p per unit/kwh of generated electricity regardless of whether you use it or export it. What’s more, payments are tax-free, index linked and guaranteed for 25 years. And VAT on electricity is still only 5% for the foreseeable future. So how does the FiT generate income for the user? 1. With PV micro generators, you will be paid for every kwh or unit they produce (typically 43p per unit) 2. The user will be paid an export rate to the national grid for energy not consumed onsite – this can be arranged with the supplier 3. Plus the household has significant savings on its electricity bill. If you would like no-nonsense advice on how you can reduce your carbon footprint, whilst getting paid for it, please contact Daniel Lang at Electrotect on 01274 816782 or email sales@electrotect.co.uk

Going the Whole Hog for Injured Servicemen... Inspired by the story of the Bradford Boar, two of the organisers of last year’s Little Heroes Live Festival have joined forces with Delius Lived Next Door to bring a new 3 day music and sport event to the City of Bradford for the August Bank Holiday. If you are not familiar with the story of the Bradford Boar (which appears on the city’s coat of arms) then sit back and let us educate you. Back in the Middle Ages, the town of Bradford was terrorised by a huge boar which roamed the forest of Cliffe Wood. The local Lord offered a reward for any one brave enough to kill the boar. One hunter knew the boar was fond of drinking from a particular well and so lay in wait for his quarry there. The boar arrived and the hunter duly killed it. However the creature was too big to move. The hunter went to gather witnesses but by the time he reached the town, some-one else was claiming to have killed the beast. Understandably our hero was angry and stormed up to accuse the false killer. However the latter had the boar’s head and so the Lord was inclined to believe him over the true hunter. However, our hero was undaunted. “He may have the head,” he proclaimed in front of the Lord’s court, “But I have it’s tongue!” Thus was the canny fellow able to claim his prize... Chris Charlesworth and Mark Hall have taken this tale for the back drop to the new festival. They worked with the Delius staff last year – on the Ginger Fringe and Mocktober Fest and it seemed logical when the Bingley Sports club, the venue for their LHL Festival last year, proved unavailable this year, that they team up again.

“It’s a great venue” said Mark, “With a tradition of putting on some of the best local and national talent. The staff and customers really get behind the events that go on too, so we expect to raise quite a lot of money for this year’s charity which is Help for Heroes.”

“Indeed,” said Chris, who has another music festival happening the week before in Leeds – Leeds Metal Fest (itself part of the Leeds Festival Fringe) “Especially with it being a three day event too. We’ve not finalised the line up but we’ve got the headliners in place and are getting the pick of Yorkshire talent to play.” The festivities kick off on the Friday evening with Bradford songstress Liz McKenzie starting the proceedings at 6pm. Leeds band The Reacharounds are next, followed later by Idiotbox and the headline slot is filled by Continued over page...

You can enter a team by contacting Delius or emailing info@bradford-boar-fest.co.uk. Squads of upto 10 people with an entry cost of £2 per person per team. Delius is putting up a trophy and there will be a presentation for the winning team around tea time. The music starts at 2pm and the line up is starting to look impressive with Down The Machine, The Drastics, Skint and

Demoralised, Kath and the Mighty Menace and 4 Letter Holiday all confirmed along with headliners Thee Deadtime Philharmonics. Food for the day will include a Hog Roast (with “plastic piggies” for the vegetarians). Sunday is looking a little more chilled out with headliners being local genii Ben Peel and the Wool City Folk Club – their recent album launch packed out the pub and their infectious tunes had the place bouncing. Opening act, Delius stalwarts Do Miss America are also not to be missed. Other bands confirmed so far include Hand Made Hands, Mark’s band Indianic and Mark and Ben Peel are also going to treat everyone to a blues based duet. In between the bands a music quiz is planned with prizes for the winning team. All this with free entry? So how are they planning to raise funds for Help for Heroes? Aside from the usual charity bucket wielded by Ash – a man with a ferociously enthusiastic attitude to getting people to part with their cash – and the footy and the quiz, there will be auctions throughout the weekend. Both Chris and Mark are looking for donations from companies and organisations to support this. If you can help, please contact them at info@bradford-boar-fest. co.uk The Bradford Boar Fest runs from 26th -28th August 2011 at Delius lived next door situated on Claremont which is off Great Horton road near the University You can join the group on facebook and add yourself to the event on there too. Nerve-busting survival guide The summer holidays are almost here, then six weeks of kids clubs, days out in the park, holiday season, and generally having fun … that’s the kids sorted anyway! At the end of August, the kids across the region are facing up to the glum reality that “back to school” it is for them.

Yet preparing for this often-emotional parting can help you both get through it relatively unscathed.

Parents, on the other hand, are quite likely secretly looking forward to waving them goodbye at the school gates and breathing a sigh of relief at getting some ‘me time’ back.

How you both behave will depend largely on the child and the year they’re in. The ‘been there, done that, got the t-shirt’ generation are unlikely to get too blubby and teary, but it’s still a possibility.

But once there, rucksack and pencil case in hand, packed lunch all parcelled up and ready to go, it can all get a bit too much for children and grown-ups alike.

For a child’s first ever day at school, reassure them you will come back later, then calmly say goodbye and walk away. Sticking around for too long and dragging things out is only likely to upset you both even more. Any tears that do end up rolling are just a normal reaction to a big change and won’t last long. Even if your child is just starting a new year and already knows the score, getting them back into the swing of things before the new term starts can be a huge help.

94

Parenting experts warn that rediscovering routine can be a bit of a shock to the system and that gently reintroducing a timetable of getting up, mealtimes and bedtimes for the last week before term starts is generally a good idea. You can also prepare for potential sources of anxiety over the coming school year, such as big exams, so that fear and dread doesn’t end up ruining what’s left of their summer holiday. You might also need to reassess if there are any problems from the last term that might still be relevant, like bullying. Remember that even if your child is going back to school, rather than starting a new one, it can still be a worrying and daunting prospect. Whatever their age and circumstances, certain practical things can really help boost your child’s confidence, make them more independent and help them settle in. For example, encourage your child to ask for the toilet properly when he or she needs to go and explain that this is what they should do in class. Children who have attended play groups or nursery schools generally have fewer problems settling in on their first day at school, but your child can do just as well if he or she hasn’t attend one, provided you give them plenty of opportunity to interact with others. Try to encourage your child to have friends over to play and let them go to play with other children, with and without you.

whenever they want. Again, nursery and play school helps develop these social skills, but they can learn to share toys and play fair with adults too. No matter how many things you read and how hard you try to make things go smoothly without a glitch, don’t be too hard on yourself if it does all go a bit pear-shaped on the day. With lots of love, care and trust, as well as effective communication and some sensible forward-planning, you can make sure that first day school nerves don’t give you and your child - nightmares.

• Starting school can be nerve-jangling enough for your child without you turning into a nervous wreck as well. Don’t turn their first day into a negative experience or make your child any more worried and upset than they might be already by passing on your anxieties. • Talk about all the exciting things your child will be able to do now he or she is back at school. Remind him or her about all the things they loved doing last term and all the friends they haven’t seen for a while who they’ll be able to catch up with. • Be as reassuring as possible and tell them you’ll be looking forward to hearing all about their day when you see them later on. • Make sure your child goes to bed at the usual time the night before their first day back and gets some quality shut-eye. Being tired is a bad start to any day, let alone a stressful one. • Don’t alter your routine the day before, as this could be unsettling. • Be prompt when you come to collect them. Your child’s confidence will be shattered if you are even five minutes late and they could start to panic or get upset.

One of the hardest lessons your child will learn at school is sharing. They will have to get used to the idea that they cannot always have and do exactly what they want,

Come and join in the fun at the Pick ‘n’ Mix Family Worship At St Matthews, Wilsden and St Saviours, Harden When did you last make a vase of flowers out of a yoghurt pot and coloured paper? Or celebrate Baptism by covering a biscuit in blue icing and dunking a jelly baby in it? At St Saviours Church in Harden and St Matthew’s in Wilsden, your children (and your inner child) can celebrate and explore Christianity through a whole range of activities. The Pick ‘n’ Mix service truly has something for everyone. The service starts with a couple of songs, some with actions for the children (and adults if they wish to join in). Followed by a short bible reading and an uncomplicated talk about the days theme. The Pick ‘n’ mix service has several ‘Zones” around the church premises, which include quiet zones within the church and noisier and messier zones at the back. There may be two or three craft activities, at least one involving something edible, all linked to the theme of the day. In the quieter area there could be candles to light as a focus for prayer, a picture or Bible

“Adults often say to me ‘I wish church was like this when I was young’ or sometimes ‘I wish it this was available when my children were young” Vicar Bob Evans

“One of the wonderful things about Pick’n’Mix worship is that all ages genuinely enjoy being together in an atmosphere of worship and learning about God” passage to reflect on, you might choose to kneel for a while at the altar rail, or to stay sitting quietly in your place. All ages can try as many or as few as they fancy. You may be surprised how children of the electronic age enjoy low-tech paper and scissors. The service closes with everyone coming together again for a final hymn and prayers. There is chance to get to know each other better after the service over coffee, squash and biscuits among the off cuts, beads, glue and crumbs in the family room.
