St. Ives Prosider are once again excited to be working hand in hand with the Friends of St Ives, we will be bringing you new content in every issue, looking at the marvellous Estate and what it brings to our local community. In this issue, we give you an insight to the Estate, and what if has to offer. The Beauty of St Ives Estate Rising high above to the West of Bingley is the beautiful and historic Country Estate of St Ives. Owned by Bradford Council and therefore open for everyone to enjoy wandering along the many footpaths through the woodland, across the open meadows and around the large lake known as Coppice Pond. The St Ives Country Estate in Bingley has long been regarded locally as a special and beautiful place. It’s 500 acres of woodland (some ‘ancient’), heather parkland, meadows, the lake

and miles of paths and bridleways have given pleasure and enjoyment to visitors here since the 1930’s. The Estate has a long history of human involvement stretching back 10,000 years, though the present Mansion House is of more recent construction, with the earliest parts dating from the 17thc. The surrounding grounds are the remnants of a landscaped garden of some importance developed by the Ferrand family through their centuries of ownership. The many streams and waterfalls that

are to be discovered throughout the Estate give a clue to the once notable Water Gardens that also existed here. St Ives provides a place of great natural beauty and interest right on the doorstep of town and city, giving town dwellers a place of easy access to come and enjoy nature, healthy air, exercise, peace, tranquillity, visual beauty, a sense of the past and overall a feeling of being away from all the ‘hustle and bustle’. The Estate is also now home to the St Ives Golf Club, the Turf Institute (STRI), an Equestrian Centre (and Riding for the Disabled), an Archery Society, an Angling group and the Mansion is now a residence for Disabled people. A day out with the Kids Written by Kim, Prosider Magazine
St Ives is the perfect place to take the kids for a day out. As a mother of two myself and living in Harden for nearly 3 years now, I regularly visit St Ives with our young children. With a packed lunch in hand and sensible walking shoes, a walk around the estate with children is an adventure in itself. We tend to start our walk at Coppice Pond (after feeding the ducks) and walk past the golf course up toward Druid’s Alter. The stunning view over Bingley and Crossflatts is one not to be missed.
Throughout the woodland you will find the most spectacular tree ‘chain saw’ woodcarvings. The tree carvings range from a python to a witch! It really is magical for the children to walk through the woods trying to find all of them, most of them hide amongst the trees and woodland. Along the way, you will find many picnic tables in order for you to stop and take a break or alternatively you can stop at Lady B’s Café for a quick bite to eat. Once you have managed to see all the delights St Ives has to offer and the kids have enjoyed their adventure through the woods, the final stop has to be the Wooden Adventure Playground.

The Playground As far as playgrounds go, this has got to be the best on offer for all ages of children. A traditional wooden adventure playground with a sand pit in the toddler area, accompanied by small diggers that all the children love. The park has retained the ever popular “Zip Wire” that was always a favourite with the children and hosts an array of climbing frames, traditional rubber tyre swings and slides along with some new equipment to keep the children busy for an hour or so. In the summer months the Ice cream van will be there daily, but make sure you take some pennies so not to disappoint the children. Public toilets are free of charge and can be found by the play area. All year round, walkers young and old, with their children and dog owners (and their pooches) can find refreshment at “Lady B’s Café” in the centre of St Ives where Joy and John will welcome everyone, (and their dog), into the café to enjoy a selection of cakes, sandwiches and drinks. The Friends of St ives – become a member or volunteer St Ives has an active body of volunteers (the Friends of St Ives) who work closely with Bradford Council to protect and preserve the Estate and they hold a programme of events through out the year. Details can be found on their website www. friendsofstives.org.uk Watch out this year for notice of the opening of an Information Centre and a Historic Herb & Culinary Garden at St Ives.

St Ives through the Seasons In Spring the woods are a mass of bluebells surrounded by banks of pink and white Rhododendrons. In Summer the sunny open spaces and the cool glades are a delight to walk in with butterflies and many species of birds to be seen. In Autumn, the many interesting varieties of trees turn into a wonderful display of reds, golds and browns with many varied and unusual species of Fungii to be found along by the paths. In Winter the wonderful long distance views open up and on a frosty or snowy day the whole Estate becomes a magical and lovely place to be.

The Oldest Building on Bingley Main Street? 1864 saw the opening of a building on Main Street at which the dignitary who opened it prophesied: “ It is a most beautiful building which will be an adornment to the town: it will enable the inhabitants to hold public meetings and to listen to lectures: for many, many years to come it will be destined that there will be much to instruct and please within these walls� 147 years later that building still stands in a prominent position on Main Street having more than fulfilled its promise to instruct by serving the town at different times as a Mechanics Institute, Girls School, Town Hall/ Council Chamber and Library. Nowadays it fulfils the promise to please the population of Bingley by housing a wine bar and dance school.
In the next edition of Prosider our resident historian Alan Cattell will explore and expand on the history of the building and its various uses over the years, including the strange means of powering the original Mechanics Institute clock!

DUE to its growing popularity, the now well-established Saltaire Arts Trail is to move its main event in 2011 from the September Festival to a weekend in May. From May 28 to May 30, the Arts Trail will feature the usual favourites such as the Open Houses exhibitions, the Makers’ Fair, the children’s Mini-trail and painting in the outdoors - but will this year add street art performances to the mix to create a real buzz in the World Heritage village.
The popular Open Houses event sees Saltaire residents opening up their Grade II listed properties as gallery spaces. With an ever-higher standard of work, the art comprises both affordable works for sale and art for exhibition only, appealing to both the connoisseur and the wider public. Finally, a unique programme of demonstrations, workshops and a fashion show has been devised to ensure that Saltaire’s reputation as an artistic hub continues to flourish. The May 2011 Saltaire Arts Trail will be its 5th. Prosider are pleased to support the Youth Café that is due to open by May of this year and after catching up with Paul Stephens, Chair of the Bingley Youth Café Project Team, this is what he had to say about it. In September 2008 a consultation exercise was carried out to gauge the need for a Youth Café in Bingley. A clear message that came out was that there is nowhere locally where young people can get advice or spend time with friends. This has been a recurring problem reported by all services, that there is nowhere for young people to go and few opportunities for positive activity. This leads to complaints from older residents and more worryingly puts young people at risk of becoming involved in anti social, unlawful or dangerous activities. So, the news received in November that Bingley has been awarded a Big Lottery grant to fund a Youth Café for the next 5 years, has been enthusiastically received by all. Paul Stephens, Chair of the Bingley Youth Café Project Team said, “The basement of the Bingley Pool has nearly been cleared and we are just about to appoint a contractor to carry out the refurbishment work. It is very exciting and the young people of the area should have a Youth Café by early summer this year.”

Youth workers from Bradford Council are meeting with young people (13 -19 years old) from the Bingley area interested in being part of the Bingley Youth Cafe steering group. Their first meeting will be on Tues 22nd February, 1pm to 3pm at Bingley Youth Project (Half Term). They will meet every Wednesday 7pm to 9pm to look at a wide range of issues including recruitment of staff, decor and activities. The Green Party Challenges ahead for 2011 Shipley’s Green Coucillors on challenges facing 2011 Written by Kevin Warnes, Green Councillor
It is sometimes said that “all politics is local”. For their part, Shipley’s Green Councillors hope that the New Year will see continued growth of the remarkable level of community activism seen in 2010. Councillor Martin Love says that “residents in the Norwoods launched an impressive campaign recently that forced a local developer to comply with planning rules”, and he hopes that this experience will “help to bring the neighbours there closer together”. Meanwhile, the Hirst Wood Regen group of residents are pushing on with a remarkable range of community projects, including the completion of a new recreational space that has transformed Hirst Lock.

Councillor Kevin Warnes has also been “hugely impressed” with the way that Saltaire Village Society members are steering the renovation of Silver Square, with help from the Council and the Bradford Community Environment Project, and says that he is “looking forward to enjoying this great new community space in 2011”.

Elsewhere in Shipley, Cllr Hawarun Hussain reports that the Friends of Northcliffe Park and Woods are developing “ambitious plans” to improve this much-loved open space in ways that will encourage families and local school children to spend time there. The Northcliffe allotment holders will also be able to enjoy the fantastic new clubhouse that they designed and helped to build and which was opened in December by Councillor Warnes. The residents of nearby Birklands Road, along with everyone else in Shipley, will be able to make use of a newly insulated community arts room at the Kirkgate Studios that they identified as a project well worth funding by National Grid. This year should also see work begin on a new junction to replace Saltaire roundabout. The design, approved by the Council’s Executive Committee in January, is the result of 18 months of extensive community consultation which Councillor Kevin Warnes says was a “pioneering process that listened to the views of local residents and took their ideas on board”. The traffic improvements will probably take place in two phases. First, the residential areas on either side of the main Bradford-Bingley road will see changes in the form of new 20mph zones and other measures to reduce traffic speeds and rat-running. Once these are complete, the main junction will be signalised with new pedestrian crossings and the roundabout removed. The end result will be a safer junction for everyone, calmer residential areas and slightly reduced congestion along the A650 corridor.

All in all, it appears that Shipley’s residents have the best ideas about how to improve their neighbourhoods. Just as impressively, they are also willing to roll up their sleeves to get things done, a civic virtue that will surely count for a great deal in the year ahead. The Cottingley Cornerstone Centre was officially opened by HRH The Prince of Wales in November 2008. Although still in its infancy it is a well established community centre serving Cottingley and the surrounding areas. The original vision for the centre was derived from a community consultation carried out in 2002. The vision was to provide a resource in the heart of the community that met a variety of purposes. The result is a purpose build facility which has state of the art facilities which include a fullly equipped ICT suite and WiFi, art and craft room, meeting rooms, hall with facilities for performing arts and a cafe.

Volunteer befrienders offer to give one hour of their time once a week to visit an older person, initially for a period of 6 months. The centre has an ongoing volunteer recruitment policy, providing the opportunity for individuals to use their skills, experience and local knowledge to make a positive contribution in their community. TOY STORY 3 (U) The third instalment of the Toy Story series was just as good as the first Toy Story, and better than the second. Telling the story of Woody, Buzz and the gang as they wrongly end up in Sunnyside Day Care, this film received universal acclaim and is the highest grossing animated film ever. Pure brilliance.

THE KIDS ARE AL RIGHT (15) Although this wasn’t highly publicised in this country, this independent film was made on a measly $4 million (OK, it’s measly for Hollywood) and won rave reviews. Julianne Moore and Annette Bening play a lesbian couple who have children via the same anonymous sperm donor. When the children become older they become eager to find their biological father.
BLACK SWAN (15) This psychological thriller was actually first discussed in 2000, when lead actress Natalie Portman and director Darren Aronofsky talked about the ballet film, although a script had not yet been written. So far the film has received 43 award wins and 146 nominations (at the time of going to press), and the critics have praised Portman’s performance as a troubled ballet dancer who competes for the main part in Swan Lake.
THE KINGS SPEECH(15)
INCEPTION (12) This fantastic movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a thief who extracts secrets from dreams was a smash at the box office. Whether you fully understood it or not (I am proud to say I did), there is no denying the hint of Escher, the outrageously clever special effects, and the brilliant acting from Ellen Page, Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
THE SOCIAL NETWORK (12A) We poke, message and delete people everyday, but most people didn’t know how Facebook came about – until 2010. The story of Mark Zuckerberg, the Harvard student who sets up a website that allows students to rate the girls at Harvard was made known to the world. The positive reviews came in like a rush of Farmville notifications. Zuckerberg
Big things are coming from this historical drama film, which tells the real story of King George VI (Colin Firth) and his speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush) who helps him overcome his stammer. At the time of going to press, the film as so far won 38 awards, and they are bound to keep coming in.
DESPICABLE ME (PG) The Prosider gave this four stars for its slick animation, witty dialogue and sweet story. Steve Carrell voices Gru, an evil super villain who adopts three girls to help him with his most evil mission yet, stealing the Moon. A sequel has already been confirmed, so get watching this to prepare for Part Two.

Rotary on President life-saving mission Bradford Bronte president Andrew Idle has called upon the Rotary Clubs of Bingley, Bingley Airedale, Shipley, Keighley and others in the Bradford District to help him achieve his aim to save the lives of 400–500 people, by encouraging more people to become blood donors.
‘Most of us would accept a life-saving transfusion, but only four per cent of the eligible population actually give blood,’ he says. ‘People do not realise that the success of many life-saving operations depends on blood transfusions. Every week, for example, hospitals in the Yorkshire area use more than 3,500 units of blood.’ Andrew’s theme for the year is: minimum investment, maximum impact. ‘Giving blood costs
nothing but can reap dividends by saving lives,’ he says. He invited Presidents of the Rotary clubs to a presentation by the National Blood Service at a recent Rotary club breakfast meeting on a Thursday morning at the Midland Hotel in Bradford. ‘I was so impressed with their work that I am now encouraging

all my Rotary colleagues and their families, friends and work colleagues to become donors, as each person can potentially save or enhance the lives of three people.

Sergeant Collins has been at Bingley for nearly three years and currently has twelve officers covering the two wards. The Neighbourhood Officers are based locally so they can build up valuable knowledge and experience of the area they serve and also the individuals that they need to be aware of. The two wards have officers allocated to them and then each Police Community Support Officers is allocated specific villages which is their dedicated area of responsibility. The Pcso’s report daily of any issues that they come across and that might need Police Officer intervention. Pcso’s are a valuable resource which not only provides a high visibility presence but due to their continuity in a particular area they build up many contacts who provide excellent intelligence which leads to offenders

being arrested and prosecuted. Each village also has a Police Officer allocated to them. They are the beat managers and it is there responsibility to ensure that persistent problems are dealt with effectively and offenders are dealt with appropriately. This may mean that individuals are arrested but it could also mean that the receive a community punishment by way of putting right what they have done wrong such as removing graffiti or paying for a window they have damaged. The role of the Sergeant is to oversee the work of the officers and to ensure that the work done is of a high standard. The Sergeant also plays a very active role in community engagement in that Sergeant Collins regularly fronts the council neighbourhood forums and also holds six weekly tasking meetings for each ward for representatives to come to Bingley Police Station to discuss local needs and priorities. Members of the public can contact their local officers by way of landline, mobile or website and can expect a response within 24 hours. If there is an ongoing incident that requires an immediate response then 999 should always be used.
