T Editor’s

LETTER

oss on some sequins, feathers and glitter because it’s officially my favorite season of the year and I’m ready to celebrate the holidays! Welcome to the third issue of the Simply Audree Kate Edit.

It’s hard to believe that it has already been a year since we first launched the magazine. At the beginning of 2019, I sat down with a few close girlfriends to make mood boards, write down our goals, intentions and resolutions for the year. I chose the word ‘Thrive’—I wanted to grow my three businesses (check), launch my digital course and community, Fashion Fundamentals (check), hire a full-time employee (check!), move into my own apartment (check!!), travel to Spain (check - Hello Summer Edit!) and so much more. 2019 was more than just a celebrated checklist—this year was my most challenging, awarding and trying year in both my professional and personal life.

When I sat down to write my editor’s letter for the magazine and reflect on the past year, I couldn’t help but smile. It’s been one heck of a year, and I am beyond grateful and proud of my team at Audree Kate Studios who have helped us reach our goals this year, the wonderful creatives who have helped me create three Simply Audree Kate magazines and most of all—you. Thank you for your support over the past seven and a half years. Whether you were here on Day One with my DIY sewing tutorials and self-timer photos in my college dorm room, or you’re joining us today, thank you! I hope you stay awhile, flip through these pages and help us cheers to another amazing year!

READYSETRED Don’t own colorful eyeshadow or eyeliner? No problem—double up your lip liner to add a little color to your top lid. This is perfect for the gal on-the-go or as a color trial before purchasing. (Though, not all lip liners will be safe for your waterline—many include ingredients that could irritate your eyes.) Focus on adding color to only the top of your lid in a line or smudge with your finger for a more natural eyeshadow-type look.

TEAM SAK HOLIDAY TRADITIONS During the holiday season my family spends most of our time in the kitchen. Every year we make tamales, menudo, fresh salsa, tortillas and of course, Christmas cookies. This is always my favorite part of the holidays because we all gather around the counter to cook, catch up with each other and play games at the dining table while the food cooks. Food is our family’s love language, and our favorite holiday dish is our homemade tamales. We invite friends over to help and it is a full-day production of preparation, cooking, eating (obviously!) and packaging them up for later and to give to friends. We have been making tamales every Christmas for as long as I can remember, and today I’m sharing our family recipe with you!

LÓPEZ FAMILY TAMALES (6 dozen)

DIRECTIONS: MEAT

Boil meat about 4-5 hours—shred and cut meat into small pieces (save broth). In large pan heat oil and flour stir till browned. Add enchilada sauce simmer until thick like gravy. Stir in broth till watery, add meat, add minced garlic. Let simmer. MAZA

In large bowl put maza, baking powder, salt and shortening. Mix by hand add 4 large spoons of sauce to maza. Clean and soak husks in hot water until pliable. Then have some fun and assemble. Steam tamales 60 minutes or until done. (Can freeze uncooked and cooked)

INGREDIENTS: 3 packages of husk 6 lbs of meat (Beef or Chicken) 10 lbs of maza 2 cans “las Palmas” Red Chili Enchilada Sauce (28 oz) 1 cup of flour

1 cup of oil 10-12 cloves of garlic 3 cans of olives 2 lbs of shortening “Crisco” 4 tbls of baking powder 4 tbls of salt 4 large spoons enchilada sauce T H E H O L I D AY E D I T 2 0 1 9

Lauren

My favorite and most recent holiday tradition is my family’s Holiday Cocktail Flight. My brother and I live far from home, so for the holidays, we like to participate in hands-on traditions with our parents. For the past few seasons, my family has gathered together in our kitchen to create our favorite holiday cocktails. We all make a different cocktail, and we create a flight or two. My mom usually cranks the holiday music and has National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation playing on the TV.

Joe Each year my family has the tradition to mix things up and try something new. Last year we decided to wear unexpected or never before seen clothing to dinner. My dad, who works at a school in Phoenix, brought home clothes from the costume department. This tradition is a fun way to lighten up and enjoy the holidays. We always follow up dinner with a bonfire and drinks!

Although my family does classic holiday traditions as many others do, my favorite is going to a football game. My family always makes it a point to go to a Steelers game every holiday season! Some of my favorite memories were created during these times. I love getting to spend time with family and cheer on our favorite team!

Gwynn My family’s tradition is going to the movie theatre for an all-day movie marathon. We see four movies in one day, spend 8 hours at the theater, and wear our Game of Thrones-themed Christmas sweaters. We are all so busy—it’s the best time for us to do absolutely nothing together!

T H E H O L I D AY E D I T 2 0 1 9

102

MacKinley My family throws a big party every year to celebrate the holidays and my dad’s birthday, which is the week before Christmas. We have a very competitive cookie decorating contest, and I get to spend time with family and friends whom I don’t otherwise see during the year. The party really gets me in the holiday spirit—as if I’m not already in the spirit by September (yes, I listen to Christmas music that early, ok).

Ellie I’m Jewish, so our holiday traditions are a little different than most people’s. We decorate and celebrate Hanukkah by getting our menorah ready, making latkes and playing dreidel. We spend every night together, and it is my favorite time of year because I get to spend so much time with my loved ones!

Melissa My holiday tradition is decorating my Christmas tree with my family every year. Putting up the tree is an experience that allows us all to bond and prepare for the exciting month ahead. My family and I love to drink hot chocolate, wrap presents and listen to Christmas music once we have the tree up. It’s one of my favorite things about the winter season! 103

12 DAYS OF GIVING BACK

This holiday season, our team is spending the 12 Days of Christmas a little differently —we’re doing 12 Days of Giving Back. Our team sat down earlier this month to discuss ways we can give back in our local community—from spending time at our local animal shelter, donating clothes to women and men’s shelters and participating in Salvation Army’s Angel Tree

Donation. Ahead we have listed out some ways we plan on giving back this holiday season plus a handful of organizations and charities our team members are personally passionate about. We hope this inspires you to give back this holiday season to your community and lend a helping hand to someone else. T H E H O L I D AY E D I T 2 0 1 9

104

RETHINK THE WRAP: Did you know Americans create 25% more trash during the holidays? Christmas is the time for giving, and there are some easy steps you can take to make your Christmas gift wrapping recyclable. Bows with glue, ribbon and glitter are not recyclable, but plain paper is, and you can even leave the tape on. Reusable bags or wrapping in brown grocery bags are always a great option. Earth 911 is a great resource to help you find your nearest recycling center for a specific item. Just type in the material you want to recycle and your zip code! LEARN MORE HERE

ANIMAL SHELTERS: A fantastic way to give back this Holiday season is to volunteer at a local animal shelter! There are hundreds of loving dogs and cats that need homes during the winter, but even if you can’t adopt, volunteer at your local shelter to walk dogs, hang out with the animals or even donate money. LEARN MORE HERE

DRESS FOR SUCCESS: Since 1997, Dress for Success has helped more than a million women get back to work and achieve financial independence through different networks of support, development tools and professional clothing. There are several ways you can get involved with Dress for Success—donate clothing, volunteer and become a corporate partner. LEARN MORE HERE

SHOP SMALL: Instead of going to a large chain restaurant, coffee shop or clothing store this season, shop small and help your local business owners. Shopping small contributes to your local economy, job opportunities and so much more. There are over 30.2 million small businesses operating in the U.S. alone, so help out your neighbor, friend or local business and purchase their products/services this season. Small businesses are a big deal.

ANGEL TREE DONATION & SALVATION ARMY: The Angel Tree program at the Salvation Army ensures that no child will feel forgotten by Santa around the holidays. The organization works with companies and donors to provide children with toys to wake up to on Christmas morning. There are two ways to participate: give joy through sponsoring a family this holiday season or help distribute the donations to the families in need. Find local opportunities to get involved here and get in the holiday spirit in the most heartwarming way!

CHARITY MILES: Need an incentive to exercise during the holidays and want to give back? Charity Miles is an app you can use to track your exercise, but you can also use those miles to earn money for your favorite charities. You create an account, choose your charity, and then get out there and go! You can walk, run, or bike. Every mile you hit, the more money your charity will get from the sponsorship pool that is created for Charity Miles. This app is available for free on iPhones and Androids, and its members have earned $2.5 million for charity. LEARN MORE HERE

TOYS FOR TOTS: The Marine Toys for Tots campaign holds local toy collections nationwide to provide kids with toys just in time for the holidays. Members of the community provide new, unwrapped toys to collection boxes held at local businesses. Toys will then be organized and managed by Toys for Tots coordinators to ensure that they are distributed to families in need. Look up your local collections box here or provide a donation amount here and help guarantee a good holiday for kids all around the nation!

ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION: “Every 65 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s. This disease has affected several of my family members, including my grandmother. The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Their mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research, to provide and enhance care and support for all affected and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Learn more about Alzheimer’s Association and how you can join the fight here.” - Audree

NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS: “NAMI stands for the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and it is the leading mental health organization in the nation. NAMI helps provide people with mental illnesses an outlet for help and support while raising awareness about the stigma against mental health. I am incredibly passionate about this charity because I struggle with anxiety and want to help give everyone access to the resources they need to get better and cope with their mental health struggles. These resources have helped me to achieve a healthy peace of mind. NAMI helps everyone become more educated about mental health while supporting those who suffer through donations.” - Melissa, Social Media Intern

THE ALS ASSOCIATION: “The ALS Association is a non-profit organization combating ALS on every front. The organization raises money for research and patient services, provides assistance for people with ALS through nationwide chapters, coordinates care through certified care centers and leads the way in global research. This organization is important to me because in April my grandma was diagnosed with ALS and passed away a few months later. When I first heard the news, the ALS Association was the first place I went to for information. It provided me hope and gave me a better understanding of the disease. Even though my grandma passed away, I’m still able to do my part by raising awareness and donating to the association. If you would like to support the ALS Association and those affected by ALS, click the link here.” - Lauren, Editorial and Stylist Assistant

AUTISM SPEAKS: “Autism Speaks promotes solutions for individuals and families across the spectrum through advocacy and support. They have been increasing research as well as collaborating with partners to expand a global understanding of Autism. They also advocate to increase early childhood screenings and ensuring access to reliable information for families and individuals in need. I am passionate about this organization because my brother has Autism, and he is one of my favorite people in the world. I firmly believe there is more to be done when it comes to an acceptance of the disorder on a global scale. This charity not only has increased the level of research, but it has helped create more conversation about Autism. To contribute to research and more sources for families in need, please visit here.” - Gwynn, Styling Intern

PREVENT CHILD ABUSE AMERICA: “PCAA, Prevent Child Abuse America, is an organization that strives to prevent child abuse and neglect in America. PCAA provides services like safety courses and child development information. They also advocate and push for policy change and improvement for childcare situations and child development. This organization helps children educate themselves and others, raise awareness and promote positive childhood experiences. I became connected with PCAA through my sorority, and since I’ve been an avid supporter.” - Ellie, Social Media Intern T H E H O L I D AY E D I T 2 0 1 9

Sequins, satin and animal print is our favorite trio for a party. A satin robe and chunky sandal dress the sequin top and skirt down for a house party.

TEAM SAK 2020

RESOLUTIONS “I will be doing a ‘3 in 30’ challenge for 2020 where I pick three new routines, habits or self-care practices each month. I want to add things like morning meditation, daily reading, no-screen/work days and even simple habits like Sunday meal prep or not hitting the snooze button.” - Audree “My New Year’s Resolution is to be more patient with myself and to get more comfortable being uncomfortable!” - Gwynn “In 2020, I want to focus on myself! This past year was crazy, and I put myself on the backburner. In the new year I want to make sure I dedicate enough time to loving myself! - Lauren “My New Year’s Resolution is to have more adventures! I would love to attend more concerts, spoken word and comedy events and maybe even save money to go on a trip somewhere new!” - Joe “I don’t usually make new year’s resolutions, but my intention for 2020 is to not let fear control my decisions so often. So here’s to not being a scaredy-cat next year.” - MacKinley “I want to try new experiences and focus on my mental health this year!” - Ellie “My New Year’s Resolution is to spend more quality time with family and friends! I also want to travel more this coming year and create amazing memories!” - Madi “I want to throw myself out of my comfort zone! I also want to prioritize my career and personal goals this year to maximize growth.” - Melissa T H E H O L I D AY E D I T 2 0 1 9
