NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS GOALS I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions—I prefer New Year’s goals. That is why for 2022 I have a range of goals from big to small. I feel a sense of accomplishment every time I cross a goal off my list when it is achieved. Having a list of goals gives me something to work towards throughout the year. I write these goals down in a notebook and glance at the list each week. This reminds me of what I want to achieve and gives me the nudge I need to stay motivated and work to accomplish the goals. Staying healthy is one goal I set for myself, and luckily for me we have a list of seven ways to make 2022 a healthy year on page 44. At the top of my list is lowering my screen time and getting better rest at night—maybe by putting away my phone and turning off the TV an hour or two before bedtime. Another one is cutting back on sugary drinks and alcohol. I’m thinking of trying Dry January this year. Learn more about Dry January by reading Julie Burton’s article on page 42. hen was the last time you visited Union Station or the WWI Museum? When was the last time you picked up a book about Kansas City’s mob history? hanala Rubenfeld didn’t set out to open a business delivering artisan salads. As an Integrative Nutritional Health Coach, she had several clients who were busy working moms. One client shared that while she was really inspired after each coaching session, she couldn’t seem to implement the advice once she got home. “As a busy mom myself, I could totally relate to her,” Rubenfeld says. “And I knew she just needed something to get her going.” Rubenfeld decided she would get up an hour earlier on Monday morning and deliver five salads to her client before dropping her kids off at school. She based the idea on a concept called “crowding out.” Instead of focusing on what you can’t eat, you
fill your plate with an abundance of healthy items like greens—and have less room for the unhealthy fare. “She wouldn’t have to think, she wouldn’t have to prepare,” Rubenfeld says. “No matter how busy she was or how stressful her day was, she would be able to take it and go.” Her client loved it—and asked Rubenfeld if she could deliver five more salads the following week. Salads 2 Your Door was born and steadily grew, primarily through word-of-mouth. The concept behind Salads 2 Your Door is making a healthy lifestyle easy and doable for people. Rubenfeld was led to the field of holistic nutrition after seeking dietary advice following one of her pregnancies. Instead of a plan customized for her, she was given
a one-size-fits-all formula to follow with no room for flexibility. “Everybody’s different, everyone has their set of circumstances and if you’re not going to take that into account, you’re not necessarily going to get the full picture,” Rubenfeld says. “My eyes were opened to this concept of holistic living. In other words, you take the whole body into account—the person’s lifestyle, their background.” Rubenfeld has witnessed the power of a holistic approach in her nutritional coaching business. By taking her clients’ whole selves into account, she has seen them overcome issues as serious as addiction. It is this same whole body approach Rubenfeld uses in Salads 2 Your Door. While some businesses make traditionally unhealthy foods healthier, she aims to get your palate and your body used to a different kind of eating. “Your body naturally craves what it just had,” Rubenfeld says. “So the more good stuff you feed it, the more it’s going to want that.” Salads 2 Your Door salads are far from basic. They are artisan, gourmet, and
created with one-of-a-kind ingredients and seasonal produce. They are also surprising—customers never receive the same salad more than once every six weeks. Always vegetarian, some sample offerings include the Marinated BBQ Tofu Bowl and the Kale Sweet Potato Avocado Salad with Tahini Dressing.
“Every Sunday evening, salads are going to be delivered to your doorstep. Whatever else is going on in your life, you have that consistency.” Salads 2 Your Door customer Jennifer shares, “The salads are so good. Each one better than the last. I’m so glad I finally decided it was important.” In the process of running her business, Rubenfeld discovered that greater choices often lead to greater stress for
customers. So she eliminated the frustration of having to choose between multiple options. “The model is very non-traditional,” Rubenfeld says. “It’s almost the opposite of what people are expecting. They are used to thinking I’m hungry. I want to call a restaurant and have them deliver it to me. Because our core belief and concept is based on allowing you to create a healthy lifestyle, you don’t get to choose the salads. What you do get to choose is what you do and do not like, and allergies and preferences. Each salad is custom-built to each customer’s liking.” All of the salads are kosher and can be made to accomodate any dietary preference. Each also includes a nutritional label and Weight Watchers points. In addition, customers receive weekly challenges and information on superfoods and living a healthy lifestyle—because their primary goal is to help you. “Every Sunday evening, salads are going to be delivered to your doorstep,” Rubenfeld says. “Whatever else is going on in your life, you have that consistency.”

It’s January, and it’s winter. Once the holidays have come and gone, it doesn’t seem like a joyous season anymore. Bare branches have taken the place of brightly colored autumn leaves, and it’s much too early to yearn for the green of spring. How does one muddle through these cold, dark months between our more colorful seasons? “When you feel better on the outside, I can almost guarantee that you will feel better on the inside,” says Gina Rafkind, owner and founder of VedaSun (vedasun.com). Rafkind believes it is important to set aside some time for yourself every day “to care for the vessel that houses your spirit.” Here are some ways to do just that.

Moisturize
People tend to drink less water as the temperature drops. Being dehydrated will make you tired and more prone to snacking. Herbal teas and low-calorie
Exfoliate Weekly exfoliation helps remove dry, flaky skin to reveal radiant, smooth skin. Plus, your moisturizer will absorb more quickly and deeply, allowing it to do its job better.
An oil-based (rather than water-based) moisturizer or night cream will create a protective layer on the skin and retain more moisture than a lotion. Look
for products that are made with nonclogging oils such as avocado, mineral, primrose, or almond oil. If you prefer lotions, look for those containing humectants—a class of substances that includes glycerine, sorbitol, and alpha-hydroxy acids—which will attract moisture to your skin. Moisturize hands and feet every night.

Protect skin from wind & cold Dress in layers. Pieces made from fabric that wicks moisture away from the skin to the next layer of clothing should be worn closest to your body. Remember to cover your hands and head. If it is particularly cold, use a face mask or scarf. Having a layer over your mouth and nose warms the frigid air before you inhale, helping protect your lungs. Try wearing mittens instead of gloves. Now that we’ve covered some ways to care for our “vessel,” let’s consider what may be some of the more challenging aspects of enduring winter.
Find an activity that gets you outside, preferably when the sun is out
Your body’s internal clock is regulated primarily by exposure to light. During June, there are 15 hours of daylight in contrast to only about 9-1/2 hours during January, most of which occur during the workday. This makes for long, cold, and dark evenings. Be mindful of your mood and mental health in the darker and colder months, as winter can increase the incidence of depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in many people. If you find yourself experiencing overwhelming sadness, seek help from a professional.

t’s that time of year again: the post-holiday decrescendo into January. The holiday cheer? Gone. The parties? Over. The presents? Opened. The tree? Back in the box or out at the curb with the rest of the garbage. It’s time to segue. It’s time to man up. It’s time to put on our big girl pants. January is here. This month is not for the faint of heart. It is often the coldest month of the year, and with cold comes snow, windchill, and that sneaky and slippery ice.

However, it is also a new year, a fresh start, a month full of resolutions to do things better this year! Maybe you are decluttering. Perhaps you are going to lose that COVID weight. Maybe, just maybe, you want some new botanical beauty, bringing new life and energy to your home. Here are some practical options for hardy plants that will set you up for success. Scott Wisdom is a manager at Family Tree Nursery, and he recommends three plants that are tough
enough to not only survive, but thrive during January.
The snake plant
is perfect for the novice green thumb. Some adjectives used to describe the snake plant include easy, virtually indestructible, and forgiving. It rarely is in need of repotting. It can survive in low light or partial shade. Furthermore, for the neglectful plant owner, it can survive a drought (meaning if you forget to water for a while, the snake plant won’t die). Wisdom also recommends

for January. “ZZ plants are architectural plants and can survive in any light,” he says. However, they do grow best in indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight may scorch the leaves. Water the ZZ plant every two to three weeks, permitting the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Some Other Options The aloe vera plant
is a solid option to keep in the home. Known for soothing burns and itching, this succulent needs bright, indirect sunlight and coarse, well-draining soil. Aloe vera plants even flower in the winter. Need some color in your home this January? The moth orchid is a great choice. These beauties need low to medium light. It is best to only water when the soil is dry and fertilize after watering. Moth orchids prefer warm temperatures.
The jade plant grows more beautiful with age. This plant thrives in room temperatures. Indirect sunlight works best for the jade plant, and this plant

The rubber tree is a larger, easy to grow indoor houseplant. The rubber tree prefers medium to bright indoor light. Room temperatures are tolerable. The top layer of soil needs to be completely dry before watering. Often found in offices, the pothos is a very hardy plant. It can tolerate a variety of light levels. The top inch of soil should be dry between waterings. Be careful not to overwater, as that can cause the pothos plant to rot. Let’s make 2022 the year of the plant. Go to the nursery, purchase some new plants and make your home a little greener, a little brighter, and filled with more good energy. The outside is brown and gray right now, and we have no control over that. Let’s compensate and make our homes as green and lively as the springtime.

his spring, patrons will have a unique new option to try. Enzo will be a bistro & wine bar serving Mediterranean fare. Located at the 5th and Walnut entrance to City Market, in the space recently vacated by Bo Lings, Enzo is the brainchild of sister and brother team Laura and Grant Norris, who own the popular midtown Ragazza Restaurant. The idea for Enzo comes from visits to their favorite restaurant in Trastevere, a bohemian metro of Rome, and promises to deliver a diverse Mediterranean experience leaning heavily on Sicilian and Greek dishes, including shared and small plates as well as full entrée portions. Laura tells the story.

What will people be able to look forward to on the menu this spring? We are not releasing much about the menu except that it will include a few Ragazza favorites and will be primarily Italian with some Greek, French, and Spanish dishes. Menu staples will include roasted lamb, house-made tzatziki, and a meatball similar to the one Ragazza is known for.
Where did the idea of Enzo originate? We opened Ragazza at the end of 2013 in a tiny shop at 301 Westport Road, where Pryde’s started. After five years we took the risk of a move and expansion and reopened on 43rd and Main. While we celebrated a successful year at our new location, we were closed that same weekend for COVID-19 and had to become a carryout restaurant within two days. Our loyal customers along with the PPP loans helped us through. During that first year when we had real success, we talked about opening Enzo, mainly because of my love for Greek food. We immediately stopped our plans to go to a combined space in City Market and focused on keeping Ragazza afloat. Ragazza has an

What is special about the City Market location in the old Bo Lings spot? We have been in love with the space, but as we were looking in 2019-20 it was not available. My background is in historic preservation and neighborhood revitalization, and I have watched for years as the city of KCMO has done the good work of encouraging locally owned small businesses to locate and thrive there. I have no doubt we will thrive there too. The small business center that is the City Market, along with the growing residential, and the proximity to our historic downtown is a win-win for me personally and professionally. I couldn’t be more excited. The main construction taking place in the space is the construction of a central bar and private customer bathrooms. It will be as warm and welcoming as Ragazza. We are not planning to change what we know works well!

Robin Addleman of West Elm Photography is inspired by the quote “Every artist was first an amateur” from Ralph Waldo Emerson, which serves as an important reminder when she tries something new in photography. Growing up, Robin would watch her mother take amazing photos everywhere they went, and also develop the images in a back bathroom at home. Intrigued by her mother, Robin started taking photos casually of anything and everything. But it wasn’t until she became pregnant with her twin boys in 2010 that she gained a love and passion for taking portraits of people of all ages, and thus turned this interest into a successful career. With a glance at her portfolio, you will see she is no longer an amateur. She has become a skilled photographer ready to show your personality and life through her imagery. No matter where your natural element is—a rolling meadow, a football field, your favorite coffee shop, or a rundown gas station—Robin can help tell a story in a photo, your story. IMPARTING FINANCIAL WISDOM TO YOUR CHILDREN

here are many lessons to teach in your child’s journey to adulthood, but an important one that is often overlooked is teaching your child how to manage money. Our desire to not have our children “want” for anything sometimes impedes the practical necessity to learn the basics of living on your own as an adult.

It’s never too early to teach your child positive money lessons. Here are ten lessons to help you get started.
2. Give them a job, not an allowance. Your first message to your child should be that money is not given; it is earned. Instead of a weekly allowance, send your child a paycheck once a month. Write up a “job description” and review it with them. Explain that the job has to be performed consistently and well, and then pay them monthly via check or direct deposit into their account. Doing this monthly is a good lesson in balancing money demands over a more extended period of time.
1. Open a checking account and a savings account for your children with you on the account. Order a handful of checks. Open joint accounts and set them up for online banking. Teaching your child at an early age how to read a bank statement and understand deposits, withdrawals, and compounding interest will serve them well. 3. Teach them to save a percentage of earnings (at least a third). Skip the piggy bank jar and have
them deposit their savings in a bank. 4. Model the behavior you want them to aspire to—be a good example. If you want your child to save, show them that you save. You don’t have to overshare your financial situation, but let them see enough to know that you practice what you preach. Don’t argue about finances with your spouse in front of your children, but do let them see you review a monthly budget or make “cost-cutting” decisions. Set rules for how often you dine out or splurge on extras; these are things they will notice at a very early age. 5. Let them make purchases on their own. This is difficult. I grew up living below the poverty line, so I found myself wanting to give my child things I never had. That’s a trap, and you should avoid falling into it. Instead, help your child plan how to earn and pay for what they want responsibly.
If you want to be a part of it, create a “matching” plan with your child to complement their savings efforts toward the purchase. 6. Teach them how to shop wisely, utilizing topics such as: •
Making cost comparisons on the identical product;
•
Evaluating quality products vs. cheap products and analyzing the durability;
•
Explaining what opportunity cost is—if you buy this, you can’t afford that;
•
Taking time to make purchases to navigate away from impulse buys.
7. Teach them to be charitable. Help your child select a charity or cause to donate to, and take the time to research it with them.
8. Teach them to save money for college or higher education. While you may plan to pay for this, it’s still worth your time to have them save a portion of their money. It’s also an excellent opportunity to discuss student loans and to avoid them at all costs! 9. Good debt vs. bad debt. This is a more complex subject to teach at an early age, but begin to build a credit history for your child by applying for something together. One possible option is a low-limit AMEX card which must be paid off every month. Introducing them to the concept of never running a balance on a credit card is important. At the same time, you can explain how investing in real estate can be a smart financial decision, even if you are paying interest. 10. Teach them that money isn’t everything and to enjoy all that life has to offer—not just material things.

’m sure you’ve heard that eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is a good way to stay healthy. Plant-based diets have grown in popularity so you may have also heard about the many benefits that come with lowering your intake of meat and dairy. If health is a priority in your new year, you may benefit greatly from incorporating more plant-based meals into your life. But this doesn’t mean you need to be fully vegan or vegetarian to be healthy. The big thing is finding a balance. “The main idea with a plant-based diet is incorporating more whole grains, vegetables, fruits, beans, legumes, nuts, and seeds into your diet and cutting back on processed foods,” explains Katie Blumhorst, RDN, LD, owner of Healthy Kidney Nutrition. “By including more whole foods in your diet you consume more

fiber and nutrients that your body needs, which has more impact on your health.” Cara Glenn, RD, LD, at The Kansas City Dietitian, says that as a dietitian she believes in the healing power of food. “I do believe that plant-based diets play an important role in the prevention and treatment of many different diseases. The antioxidants and nutrients available in many of these foods have been shown to fight and prevent disease in different systems of our bodies. Including a variety of plant-based foods is important as well because different colors provide our bodies with different nutrients,” she explains. Studies have found that these diets lower blood pressure, improve heart health, help treat underlying chronic conditions, and even increase life expectancy. Switching to a plant-based diet can help with weight loss too. This

You might even consider just starting with Meatless Mondays. “If you are interested in including more vegetarian meals into your meal plan, then one day a week is a good place to start, especially if you are experimenting

hile many of us aren’t concerned about aging skin until our late 30s or early 40s, collagen levels actually start to diminish as early as our teens. Many women report noticing those “fine lines” in their mid-20s. As such, skincare is a lifelong must, and there are several things you can do to ensure the best possible look and feel for your skin.
Sunshine. You might be walking on it, but when you are walking in it make sure your skin is protected. This may be the single most effective way to slow the signs of aging in your skin. Harmful UVA and UVB rays are con-

stantly in play when you are outdoors. Wear a daily SPF with a rating of 30 or higher, and limit your sun exposure during peak hours (10 am–2 pm). Protective wear like hats, shirts, and sunglasses are also a good idea. Finally, do not use a tanning bed. There are great products on the market to give you everything from that sun-kissed glow to deep chocolate skin.
Develop a skincare regime and adjust it appropriately as you age. The four essentials most specialists agree on are: 1.
Wash your face each morning and evening, and after an incident of
heavy sweating, as perspiration is a skin irritant. 2.
Use a gentle cleanser; experiment until you find one that you like.
3.
Exfoliate one time per week.
4.
Use a moisturizer after each facial wash. Choose your moisturizer depending on your skin type, but use one no matter how oily your skin is. Moisturizers trap water inside our skin, which results in more glowing, youthful skin.
Exercise regularly. Exercise not only improves circulation and boosts your immune system, it also helps with weight management. All three of these
factors can affect the appearance of your skin.
Don’t smoke (or if you do smoke, quit smoking). There are many reasons not to take up (or continue) this dangerous habit, and lung cancer is probably the main one. But smoking causes skin problems too. Nicotine can thin the skin because it causes blood vessels to swell. Smoking stunts collagen production, which has a direct impact on your skin’s elasticity. Finally, smoking depletes vitamin C in your body, which is critical to hydration.
Alcohol isn’t your face’s friend either. Alcohol harms your skin too. Blood vessels dilate when exposed to alcohol. This increases the blood flow directly below the skin’s surface. Over time these vessels can be permanently damaged. This can manifest as red blotches on your skin, affecting your complexion. A glass of wine or a beer here and there won’t likely cause this, but moderation is important for beautiful, healthy skin.
You are what you eat, or at least your skin is. Diet is a significant factor in your skin’s health and appearance. Drink plenty of water daily. According to WebMD, you should drink between half an ounce and one ounce of water for each pound you weigh, every day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, that would be 75-150 ounces of water per day. Limit sugar and salt in your diet as well—get rid of junk food, especially greasy chips, too much fast food, and soda. Consuming food high in antioxidants, Omega-3, and vitamins can dramatically increase the youthful look of the skin. Foods such as kale, spinach, salmon, pecans, walnuts, and fruits (especially berries) are your skin’s friend! Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, peppers, and citrus fruits will give you a healthy dose of vitamin C, which plays a vital role in skin hydration. Dr. Scott Willson at Purity Wellness Center recommends Retin-A, which is a prescription. He explains, “Retin-A is the final piece of the skincare puzzle. It increases the cell turnover rate and keeps the skin cells young and supple. This prescription topical is applied ten minutes after washing your face at night and smoothes out fine to medium lines.” He also explains that the best way to figure out what is right (and not right) for your skin is to make a complimentary consultation appointment to review your skincare concerns and evaluate all of your options. There are a vast array of procedures and treatments available at your local aesthetician. And one final note: repetitive facial expressions can cause wrinkles over time. Remember when your mom told you to stop frowning or your face would stay that way? As usual, your mom was right.

I’m writing this in November. You’re reading this in January, which means I’m well into what we call “Dry January.” Dry January—it’s an annual tradition where some of us choose to ditch alcohol for the month. Some do it as a New Year’s resolution. Some do it to “detox” from the excessive drinking during the holidays.
I do it because ... well, I don’t really know. If my friends jump off a bridge, so will I. Only in this case, Dry January does more good than harm. I’m not an every day drinker—I would estimate 1-2 drinks a week on my own. Maybe more if someone invites me to a happy hour. I’m more of a social drinker. But it hasn’t always been that way. I’m a 40-yearold woman with stories about alcohol from my college days, 20s ... and 30s. Here are a few things I’ll miss during Dry January—in no particular order, during no particular age. Mooning that nice family on a boat in the Florida Keys. The kindness of strangers inside the Port-APotty at Arrowhead Stadium. It was a cold winter game. I pulled down my pants, my thermals, and relieved myself. I realized I peed through my underwear but didn’t have the coordination to take off my shoes, pants, and thermals to take off my underwear and ditch them. Such a kind lady helped me get situated for the Chiefs game. Uber for taking me where I need to go. It was Thanksgiving night on the Plaza. I was newly divorced and couldn’t remember my
new address. I told the Uber driver to take me to my ex’s house. But hey, he got me where I said to go! The convenience of boxes being a catch-all for New Year’s Eve parties. I went to a friend’s house for New Year’s Eve, then decided to crash on a twin bed. I woke up, couldn’t find a trash can or toilet and puked inside a box in a closet. It was contained. Being the last one on the dance floor at every wedding I’ve been to. Making new BFFs in the bathrooms at bars, no matter what city I am in. Naps. I went to a house party, used the restroom, and woke up to my boyfriend opening the door after he picked the lock because I took a 30-minute nap. The very nice street vendors in downtown Kansas City. Staycations are extra fun to wake up to after you find a sausage street vendor in the Power and Light District while walking back to your hotel the night before. My stomach quickly reminded me that I ordered an extra hot sausage and “Hey, you got any extra jalapenos back there? Throw those on. I’m half Mexican.” At least the street vendor thought I was funny.

A Not-So-Ordinary Book Discussion
IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL A new year is upon us and it’s the perfect time to take a deep breath and prepare for new adventures ahead. Your list of resolutions may be long, but make sure it includes a commitment to treating yourself well and making time for things that bring you joy. If you want to read more in 2022, consider my latest recommendation. The second in my list of “Long Haul” books worth reading, The Invisible Life of Addie Larue , warrants a bit of time, focus, and attention, but not because it’s a particularly arduous read (although, at 400 pages it isn’t a quick weekend page-turner either). It’s a story that invites introspection throughout—that quiet question we ask ourselves as characters face twists and misfortunes. What—if dealt a similar hand—would we do?

The Invisible Life of Addie Larue (V.E. Schwab, 2020) “Never pray to the Gods that answer after dark.” Well, now. If there’s ever a line to get your attention, this is it. The Invisible Life of Addie Larue is a literary potpourri—a spiritual journey with a dash of supernatural, a hint of history, and a healthy dose of the timeless pursuit of happiness. If you enjoy books that involve a bit of time travel (think The Time Traveler’s Wife), you’ll embrace this story that begins in 1714 and ends 300 years later. Addie, a sweet young woman with an adventurer’s heart, cannot bear the thought of getting married and settling down like women in the 18th century were expected to do. A free spirit in her soul, she would do anything to avoid the predictable and tiresome life waiting for her. Panicked and out of time, Addie makes a rash decision—and deal—with a darkness that preys on despair and vulnerability to get exactly what he wants. Time-hop stories can be hit or miss. Some can make you feel like you’re on a wonderful historical around-the-world journey while others can make you dizzy with the constant backand-forth as you refer back to prior pages to figure out where the character is now and what’s going on. Despite spanning centuries, the time-hop of The Invisible Life of Addie Larue is effective, easy to follow, and keeps your interest throughout. That being said—like most of the “Long Haul” books featured in this column, this isn’t a read you can come and go from casually while multitasking. And, truthfully, you won’t want to. The writing is engaging, the story compelling, and the characters are ones you hope discover some sort of resolution. Throughout, you’re with Addie as she struggles literally and figuratively with the darkness and decision she made. The concept of the story is both modern and timeless—the “if you were granted one wish” storyline that appeals to all ages. In this story, the question really isn’t what she wished for as much as Did the price she pay make it worth asking at all? You’ll have to take the journey and answer that for yourself.

Whether you’re feeding out-of-town friends and family or hosting a party, spend less time in the kitchen and more time with those you love. This simple ingredient and super-tasty sandwich will certainly feed a hungry crowd. Be sure to add this recipe to your holiday menu this year!
New England Clam Chowder SERVES: 6-8
Ingredients
Directions
2 cups frozen potato cubes 1 cup diced onion 1 cup diced celery 1 8-ounce bottle of clam juice Two 6 .5-ounce cans of chopped or minced clams 1-1/2 sticks butter 1/2 cup flour 1 quart heavy cream (optional: substitute with half and half) 1 teaspoon sugar Salt/pepper, to taste
In a large skillet, bring potatoes, onion, celery, bottle of clam juice and the juices only from the two clam cans to a boil. Be sure the juices cover the vegetables. Turn heat to medium and continue cooking until vegetables are tender. In a small sauce pan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour using a whisk and cook approximately 2 minutes. Continue stirring with the whisk, add heavy cream, sugar, and salt/pepper. Continue heating until it begins to thicken. Remove from heat.
Add clams, butter/cream mixture and vegetables to the slow cooker. Heat on low for approximately 2 hours. Serve in a sourdough bread bowl or topped with your favorite cracker. And don’t forget the fresh-cracked pepper! Source: Pam Ruane, Friend

KACIE BROKEN PROMISES I take care of my 80-year-old mother in my home. I promised her I would never put her in a nursing home or assisted living. But raising my own family plus working full time plus assisting her health needs is draining me. It was great at first. I like having her live here and letting her watch her grandchild grow. But now she can’t walk up stairs without help. She needs help bathing. I need to make sure she’s at doctor’s appointments and is taking her meds. I have to be on-call every minute of the day. It’s affecting my parenting, my marriage, and my work. I can’t imagine telling her she needs to go to a place that will help. What should I do?
I know my kids are sending me straight to the nursing home. I knew that fate when I watched my toddler bite into an onion like it was an apple while staring at me. No one wants to go to assisted living. I don’t. You don’t. Your mom doesn’t. Everyone’s intentions of not going are voiced when they’re young. But most people don’t understand the amount of caregiving needed for a senior. You’re starting to see the level of care needed. It’s a full-time job. It sounds like the promise you made is starting to haunt you. You don’t need to feel guilty. Placing your mom in a home can feel like a personal failure, but it’s not. Start by looking at assisted living homes. You’ll feel better about your decision. They have made vast improvements over the years. There are some very nice ones in Kansas City. Explain to your mom exactly what you said here. Would you want to put your daughter in your position? Probably not. And I’m sure your mom will understand. You can still visit your mom every day, do her laundry, shop for personal care items, and manage her finances. The biggest change will be the lifted burden of bathing, dressing, and toileting. You’re not dropping your mom off for good. She’s still your mom. Visit her and love her. Maybe don’t bite into an onion and stare at her though.
