8 | SIMPLY kc MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2022

September has arrived. Kids are back in school, and many teens have made their way to college. The days of staying up late or sleeping in are replaced by homework and bedtime routines. This time of year gets me excited for the fall season and everything that comes with it. The weather begins to cool and some trees may even be gin dropping their leaves. Who doesn’t love watching football games, pulling out the sweaters and jeans, and trying out new fall recipes?

12 | SIMPLY kc MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2022 hen you look at a map, you’ll see the borders of countries and states. You’ll see outlines of cities and towns. If you take away the outlines and the borders to show what the land really looks like, you’ll see land, rivers, lakes, hills, and mountains. You’ll see homes and roads and people—people who are living and working together in a land without borders. And that’s exactly how the KCK Chamber of Commerce operates— it’s a chamber for the communities that reach far beyond KCK proper. It crosses state lines and city lines. The mission of the chamber is to enhance and create opportunities for busi nesses that want to work in Wyan dotte County. In 2023, they will cel ebrate their 125th year as a chamber.

Kansas City, Kansas, sits next to Kansas City, Missouri. The two cities with the same name are divided by the Missouri River and the infamous State Line Road. KCK is home to the Kansas Speedway, Children’s Mercy Park, and Wyandotte County Lake Park. And the point where the Kan sas and Missouri rivers meet is Kaw Point Park. It marks the site where the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped in 1804 and has views of the KCMO downtown skyline. But KCK is also one of the most di verse areas of the metro. There are approximately 86 languages spoken within the public school system. It’s a large immigrant town because of the stockyards district across the river in KCMO. You’ll find the marks of Rus sia, Poland, and Croatia in Strawberry Hill. And there’s no shortage of great food—all you have to do is look up the KCK Taco Trail.

The “small but mighty” team of the KCK Chamber of Commerce is what makes the chamber so great. Katelyn Kaminski, director of Marketing and Events, says, “We’re a small chamber, but it allows accessibility to our mem bers. A small business owner can send us an email and we’re on it. Whether a small business owner wants to know how to voice public policy or needs help networking, we are here to help.”

Forty-seven percent of the KCK Chamber of Commerce members are outside KCK proper. Katie Vivas, BY JULIE BURTON PROVIDED BY KCK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Daniel Silva is president and CEO of the KCK Chamber of Commerce. He expllains, “We’re a business-driven or ganization. Business doesn’t exist in a vacuum. If we don’t have a healthy community—if we have a marginalized community or certain segments of the community are not supported—that impacts businesses. We work togeth er to be a part of a bigger picture.”

The diversity of KCK is shown within the KCK chamber. The membership-based chamber is led by a volunteer board, representing businesses and nonprof its of varying sizes and sectors.

The progressive chamber has a gen der-balanced board and it represents the city’s diversity.

The Small Business School is just one program within the KCK chamber. They also have programs that will fit every small business owner’s interests. The Congressional Forum meets once a month. The Public Policy Series features local, state, and federal representatives to speak about issues relevant to the ar ea’s business community. The Women’s Chamber Network offers benefits with in the KCK chamber membership. And the KCK Forward Young Professionals group gathers to serve area profession als between the ages of 21 and 40 (or young at heart). The initiative’s pillars include networking, professional devel opment, and community outreach.

“We have larger organizations for sure, but small businesses are our member ship sweet spot,” she says.

The KCK Chamber of Commerce sup ports small businesses by creating a program called Small Business Universi ty. “We work with subject matter experts within HR, marketing, or employment. With people working from home, there have been some shifts, and business owners are having to wear different hats. They don’t know what they don’t know. We provide this additional support with topics such as ‘Moving Forward from an Employment Loss Standpoint.’ We get an expert to tell our members different ways to grow their business through employee retention. Small Business Uni versity is a multifaceted program for our members,” Vivas says. “We can give back to the community.”

The work Silva and his team does for the region has no borders. There is something for every small business to benefit from, no matter what part of the metro the business is in. Silva says, “We’re a small team, but we’re a family. We have great relationships, and it is fun to speak and advocate for businesses.”

“There were multiple career options, but this one spoke to my soul,” says Dr. Jenkins. “He ended up being my mentor throughout dental school and my residency and has been with me through the years.”

Following her graduation from UMKC School of Dentistry, she and her husband Brad moved to Western Kansas in Quinter and Wakeeney, then did her postdoctoral pediatric residency at Children’s Mercy Hospi tal. She decided to shift gears and open her own practice in 2020, and says it has been nice to be able to take the values she believes in and integrate them throughout all pro cesses in the new practice.

“We use fun names for procedures and equipment, including Sleepy Juice, Teeth Selfies, and calling the dental chair a chariot. Our goal truly is to make them forget they’re at the dentist and take them on a magical adventure!” says Dr. Jenkins. “When you hear the word ‘shot,’ you antici pate something painful and uncom fortable. We talk to the kids about our magic potion to make their tooth feel frozen and do some magic tricks to turn it into a princess tooth. Many parents tell me that when they sit down at the dinner table after their appointment, their kids tell the whole magical story, and nothing about the actual dental treatment.”

Dr. Jenkins explains that dentistry was secondary to a career work ing with kids, as she realized from a young age she was able to connect with kids and understand where they are coming from. She discov ered pediatric dentistry as a junior in high school when John Haynes, Chair of the Pediatric Department at UMKC, gave a career presentation about pediatric dentistry.

r. Jill Jenkins feels strongly about treat ing children with the same values she carries throughout her business, which em ulates a culture of joy, abundance and authentic connection.

Dr. Jenkins also just finished her term as president of the Kansas Dental As sociation, is past president of the lo cal Johnson County Dental Society, and is currently a Kansas delegate for the American Dental Association. She credits her mentor for instilling in her that it is a privilege to treat kids and it’s a privilege to be a dentist, which necessitates giving back and being a part of the community. As a practice they support the Make-A-Wish Foun dation and will sponsor a Make-A-Wish child this year. Give them a call. Your chariot awaits!

I think it’s so important to create a positive ex perience for kiddos and set them on a positive dental journey for life.” The parents who bring their children to Jenkins Dentistry resonate with this philosophy. One of the parents stated, “Dr. Jenkins has the most caring and compassionate heart toward children. This quality helped our four-year-old daughter get through a very extensive procedure in the best way possible. Not only is Dr. Jenkins amazing with children, but her skills are unmatched as well. Dr. Jenkins treated our daugh ter as if she were her own child. Our confidence and belief in Dr. Jenkins’ skills and professionalism is why we traveled over six hours for our daugh ter’s surgery!” Dr. Jenkins notes that they recently added a new dentist to their team. “Right now we are all women den tists and mothers, and recently welcomed Dr. Kelsey Martinez, who joins my amazing team with Dr. Ad ela Casa and Dr. Dharti Gandhi,” she says. “We also opened our second office in Lenexa in July and the doc tors rotate between locations to be able to meet the needs and conve niences of our patients.”

18 | SIMPLY kc MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2022 PARENTIG

I caught up with Ashley Daniels, LCSW, who specializes in working with kids. We covered a few differ ent areas that might help you make an informed decision if you are con sidering therapy for your child.

Do all kids need therapy?

Kids are their own individual peo ple. This means they all react dif ferently to what is going on in their world. This isn’t limited to just the pandemic, but to all sea sons of life. There are many fac tors that affect kids.

o all kids need ther apy—especially after the pandemic? The short answer is no, but the real answer is much more indepth. Everyone reacts differently to events, struggles, and stressors.

If you are a parent who is hesi tant to start your child in therapy, Daniels shared some ways to help make that decision.

Daniels stated this well by explain ing that kids all react in their own individual ways to stressors and changes in their lives. “No matter if that means a change in the way their home system works, moving schools or towns, family trage dies, or a situation like we saw with the pandemic. Depending on the changes you see in your child, they might benefit from therapy.”

Of course, the drastic routine changes that came with the world around us shutting down was dif ficult. Everyone’s social situations and learning or working environ ments were upended. These things were changed for an extended period of time, and we all had to adapt to a new routine.

D KIDS & THERAPY WRITTEN

1. Reach out to trusted friends or family members who have kids in therapy and ask for some feedback. 2. Connect with your school coun selor. They might be able to be a first step in helping your child, or BY LAUREN DREHER

SIMPLY KC MAG .COM | 19 they will have resources and can point you in the right direction. Daniels mentioned that many places have screenings they can do to help identify unknown is sues that might be present.

If some of these are happening, a good place to start is a consultation with a mental health professional. They may be able to identify what is causing the issue, and they are trained to ask the right questions to get you started.

Text line for teens: text “home” to 741-741 (this will connect them to a mental health provider)

Daniels explains, “We see a lot of kids act out their feel ings and emotions using force. Again, this doesn’t nec essarily mean they need therapy, but you can always reach out to find out if further action is needed.”

Therapy Resources Nationwide suicide hotline: 988 (this is a 24/7 line that anyone can call)

4. Many insurance plans have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) where you can get free sessions to see if therapy is the right option.

What are some signs your child needs therapy?

Daniels noted that it is very important your plan works with the family system. Kids are a part of a family sys tem. A mental health professional can be a resource to help make a plan for that child and help with parent ing tools that create a structure for your child. They are there to be a resource.

3. Research your community resources. There are often many community mental health resources available.

Therapy at Young Ages Therapy can be implemented at a very young age—even as young as two years old. Young kids are not going to sit and chat, but a therapist can be trained in techniques to use play as a form of therapy.

The warning signs will present differently with each child and each circumstance. But something Daniels reiterated is you know your child best. “You know if there is something wrong or ‘off’ better than anyone else. You have the best judgment to see the signs they are not acting quite right,” she explains. Some examples include: a change in behavior (they act the opposite of what is normal), worrying about things outside of their control, sleep changes, and appetite changes.

OP OFFERS PERSONALIZED

WRITTEN

Each guest is personally fitted by Miss Donna, who chooses items that are best suited for your body type. And if she doesn’t like it, you don’t have to buy it, she explained with a laugh.

With a fun, boisterous, and positive personality, it’s her goal to make each guest feel comfortable in what they purchase. And to feel just as confident when it’s time to wear it outside of the shop.

20 | SIMPLY kc MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2022 onna Follick, better known as Miss Donna, has been fitting women in flattering, empowering lingerie items in downtown Over land Park since 2019. Though she’s been in the business since 2009 when she first opened in the Great Mall, Miss Donna has known what her career would be since she was in high school. “I fell in love with retail as a child but was drawn to the lingerie market at 16,” she said. “I watched how some stores displayed their selections and discovered there is a huge market in the Midwest for ladies who are 30 and Missup.”Donna said this age range is key for several reasons. Not only do women become more comfort able in their bodies after 30, she said it’s also when many changes take place such as weight after children, divorce, or other signifi cant life changes. “Women become more ready to wear lingerie and have it work with their bodies.” She added that she is mindful of tummies, choosing pieces that will best work with typical 30+ bodies.

“I’m not your typical lingerie store. It’s a very fun experience. It’s my passion.” Each fitting comes with a IN LINGERIE SHOPPING BY BETHANEY PHILLIPS / PHOTOS BY JAMI BOWMAN

Gift items range in price, while lingerie pieces average around $60 up to $125 for underbusts and corsets. “I try to keep everything affordable,” she said. In addition to personalized shop ping, Miss Donna hosts girls nights out, where friends can come and learn about lingerie, or even model it for one another, depending on their comfort level.

offers a variety of products, from corsets which can be altered to robes, underbusts, and “soft, sexy, classy lingerie for ladies of most sizes.” In addition, the store carries gift items for all comfort levels.

A larger annual event is also held, Sazzy’s Lingerie Fashion Show, which collects funds for the Great Plains SPCA. This lingerie fashion show ben efits the puppy dogs and kitty cats of Great Plains SPCA. Tickets are $40, with half of that sale going to Great Plains SPCA. Guests are encouraged to bring physical donations, such as dog/cat toys, blankets, paper tow els, or Dawn dishwashing liquid. For each physical donation, guests have a chance to win prizes.

All-in-all, Miss Donna says helping women feel confident is her main goal, no matter if they come in alone or at tend one of her various events. “It’s a great bonding experience. When you see yourself in the right piece of lin gerie, whether it’s a girls night out or you’re just shopping, you look at your self and say, ‘Wow! I look this good.’”

Fans of elote will be familiar with many of the flavors packed into this pizza, but the Tajin crema makes it stand out. This crema combines roasted garlic and Tajin flavors with more traditional ingredients like mayonnaise and lime. The Elote was released on Aug. 16 and will be available through Sept. 26. The best way to enjoy this pizza is by ordering it for dine-in. It is hard not to devour it when you sit down to eat it fresh out of the oven.

It’s also important for parents to know they’re not dealing with this struggle alone. Talking with other parents facing similar challenges is not only a way to share their strug gles, but also to receive solutions and different ideas about particu lar issues. Joining an organization like CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactiv ity Disorder) can be a great source of support and information. If you’re the parent of a child with ADHD, it’s probably no surprise to you that there can be a lot of over lap between ADHD and anxiety. In fact, nearly three in 10 children di agnosed with ADHD also have an anxiety disorder. STRATEGIESPARENTING KIDS WITH ADHD WRITTEN BY DAVID MARKS

Parents may just think a child is misbehaving, which can leave par ents feeling stressed, frustrated, or disrespected. They may not realize these behaviors are part of ADHD.

“Setting up organizational sys tems can smooth the path, such as laying out clothes the night be fore and preparing backpacks and lunches for the next school day. At home, having a set structure, schedule, and known house rules will also help,” says Dr. Brack.

“Hyperactive kids are usually easy to spot as more active than other kids their age, fidgeting and mov ing as if ‘driven by a motor.’ It is more common in boys, whereas in attention is more common among girls,” explains Julie Brack, MD, pri mary care physician for Advent Health Prairie Star. For the parents of a child with ADHD, life can be challenging and even overwhelming. But with com passion and consistency, parents can help create home and school environments that greatly improve their child’s chances for success.

Here are some clues a parent can look for that indicate anxiety:

• Heightened social sensitivity (e.g., they recognize and worry about how they look to others)

Fortunately, there are things parents can do to help. “Reward good behav ior and focus on effort, not grades. And to make for a less frustrating ex perience at home as well as school, give instructions one step at a time and make sure the instructions are understood,” says Dr. Brack.

A child’s ADHD symptoms can take a toll on parents and teachers, but they can also increase stress levels for the child. For example, if a child is frequently corrected or criticized for talking or interrupting others in class, they are very likely to experience higher stress and lower self-esteem.

If your child is struggling socially, aca demically or—later in life—occupational ly, please talk with your physician about the situation. Medication is sometimes needed for either a short time or can be successfully used for many years. But it is best to work together for the best outcomes with the lowest dose.

Over the summer, my 16-year-old daughter Emma woke up and told me she couldn’t see from her peripheral vision in her left eye. It got worse. She said she couldn’t read. She’s had headaches that caused her to lose her vision before. I told her it was probably a migraine and she should lay down. She told me her head didn’t hurt but her vision was now completely gone in her left eye. I called her pediatrician and her eye doctor, and they agreed we should take her to the eye doctor to be checked out.

30 | SIMPLY kc MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2022 BECAUSE I SAID SO...

As we were driving to the eye appointment, her speech started to fail. She stuttered and spoke slowly. She began to confuse words and mix up sentences. We arrived at the eye doctor, but they couldn’t find anything physically wrong with her eyes. But Em ma’s speech continued to worsen. Her dad met us at the eye doctor, where we made the decision to take her to the ER. “Code stroke” was called and a medical team rushed her in for a CT scan. Nurses insisted on exact times of symptoms which, luckily, were timestamped by my phone calls and texts to my ex-husband, Scott.

• Sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of the body)

The signs of a stroke:

• Sudden vision problems in one or both eyes

It is said that “time is brain.” The ner vous tissue in the brain is rapidly lost as a stroke progresses. The first hour of a stroke is called the golden hour because stroke patients have a much greater chance of surviving and avoiding longterm brain damage. The earlier you get to the ER, the better.

After a few CT scans and a series of tests by a neurologist, it was determined Emma did not have a stroke. She had a “complex migraine” that shows eerily similar symp toms to a stroke. There is no way of know ing if it’s a migraine or a stroke without a CT Movingscan.forward, Emma will need to see a pediatric neurologist about the migraines.

Her dad and I can bring our stress levels down a notch, although we will never be stress-free. (Let’s be honest, we all know that hospital bill.)

The Exorcist: Do you see a trend here? Supernatural, paranormal or— in the case of The Exorcist —demonic storylines do not translate well onscreen. The movie’s release in 1973 caught audiences completely offguard by its depiction of the posses sion of a young girl, but the book was so much more subtle and effective in its story development and descrip tion of events. Take your pea soup and leave me William Peter Blatty’s book, which was a truly terrifying read.

Okay, now. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good movie. I love the giant bucket of popcorn and comfy seats. I even the love the previews and the anticipation of movies to come. That being said, when it comes to film adaptations, the book is almost always better. Even with the award-winners that manage to adeptly translate a book onto the silver screen, there is simply no way you can sub stitute the character development and nuances that live within the written word. I liked all of the following movies … but the books were better. There’s no point in itemizing these books. Suffice it to say that Stephen King stories are best read, not watched (with few exceptions, like Misery, Stand by Me, Shawshank Redemption and Carrie, which I loved in film version). His oldies—like The Shining and Pet Sematary—are stories that should be read under the covers. King’s disdain for Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation of The Shining is well-known despite Jack Nicholson’s maniacal perfection. His new books, The Outsider and Dr. Sleep, are similarly positioned. The underlying paranormal and supernatural themes in King’s stories are almost always best left to the imagination.

PHOTO BY MOLLY KUPLEN Fahrenheit 451: This one is ap parently a whopper. My son read the 1953 novel by Ray Bradbury for his high school English class and was completely taken aback by the film adaptation (if you can call it that), the changes to characters and storyline so extreme that even my 15-year-old was like, “What were they thinking?”

A Not-So-OrdinaryBookDiscussion

BY TIFFANY KILLOREN SORRY, HOLLYWOOD. THE BOOK WAS BETTER.

Unbroken: I actually enjoyed the movie Unbroken , but there is no substitute for Laura Hillenbrand’s book depict ing the unfathomable journey of war survivor Louis Zamperini. His life was more heartbreaking and thrilling than anything in fiction, and some of the people he encoun tered were more cruel than any villain in a Hollywood script. I was simply in awe of his strength when I finished the book and, although the movie stayed true to his story, it couldn’t evoke the same emotions I felt when reading about his life journey. Both are worth a read and watch, but make sure to read the book if you haven’t already.

Buttermilk Pancakes

Whisk together dry ingredients. Add buttermilk, shortening, and egg yolks. Stir together until combined. Using a wire whisk, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Gently fold into batter. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Brush with additional cooking oil or melted butter to prevent sticking. (You may use a nonstick skillet, but I still prefer to brush lightly with oil or butter.) Using a small ladle or serving spoon, spoon batter into the skillet to form 3-inch circles.

Cook, watching for small bubbles to begin to pop on the tops of the pancakes. Using a spatula, turn the pancakes over and let cook until golden. Top with butter and your choice of syrup or other toppings! 2 cups flour 2-1/2 cups buttermilk 1 teaspoon melted shortening, cooking oil, or bacon grease 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 2 eggs, separated

I’ve decided to fully embrace brunch. At home, I’m the one standing by the stove spooning batter into the skillet for the lightest, fluffiest buttermilk pancakes smothered in butter, a drizzle of maple syrup or, for special occasions, sweetened fresh berries and whipped cream. This pancake recipe was passed down from my grandmother, the only thing my grandfather swore would hold him until lunch when working in the shipyards. It is delicious plain or with fresh fruit, chocolate chips, or toasted pecans added to the batter.

What began as a season of possibility has suddenly been consumed by swim team practice, baseball games, college, and saying goodbye to grown kids. For empty nesters, it is another season of reflecting with sentiment and looking forward to travel adventures.

September always triggers school memories for me—first as a student and then as a parent. It also triggers my appetite for nostalgia and comforting seasonal foods.

Okay, so the sparks aren’t flying and you don’t want to see this guy again. How do you say no? If you met on the apps, it’s helpful to not exchange phone numbers until you know you really like the guy. It makes communication easier to stop. After the date, simply message him and thank him for his time, wish him well in the future, and unmatch. If you have exchanged numbers, you can follow up the same way. Be honest and brief. He knows you’re dating other people too, and most likely he’s dating others as well. An easy excuse to get out of a second date is you can say you’re talking to someone else and would like to pursue that relationship. The best way to break up with someone after the first date is by actually breaking it off. He deserves to know he can move on. And so do you.

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

And don’t ghost him either. But first, congrats on getting back into the dating world! And getting back into the dating app world. That isn’t easy.

I am back into the dating scene after my divorce. I joined the dating apps and have been enjoying my newfound freedom. I had a few successful dates, but I’m keeping my options open. But I am awful at saying no to the second date. Maybe there’s no chemistry or he doesn’t look anything like his photos, but I don’t say no even when I want to. Instead, I ghost them if I don’t like them. Is there a better way of telling a date, “No thanks”?
