CURRICULUM

INNOVATIVE

SIMPSON’S INNOVATIVE CURRICULUM IS DESIGNED TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS. With Simpson’s curriculum, the courses delve deeper and focus on projects that provide hands-on understanding of the subject matter. These courses allow students to work closely and build strong relationships with faculty members—just one of the hallmarks of a great Simpson education. Our curriculum encourages students to take advantage of Simpson’s community partnerships, hold internships, study abroad and conduct independent research.

EMBEDDED SKILLS:

Simpson’s curriculum also allows students to gain those skills and experiences valued most by employers. In fact, the curriculum was designed in response to research conducted by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) regarding the most sought after skills that employers are looking for in future employees. The study shows that managers are no longer hiring solely based on a student’s major—they are looking for effective communicators, innovators and problem solvers.

• The Arts • Civic Engagement • Diversity and Power in the United States

Simpson has responded by incorporating these embedded skills into many courses. These skills help students grow and develop the expertise needed to succeed in graduate school or the workplace. In addition to classes in their majors, students will take courses within the seven areas of engagement, giving them the knowledge needed to effectively participate in the communities they help to create.

SIMPSON COLLEGE

The Simpson Colloquium is taken during the first semester of college and is designed to help students make the transition to college life. The Senior Capstone is a research project in each student’s major demonstrating his or her proficiency in their chosen field of study.

OUTSTANDING FACULTY MOST OF SIMPSON COLLEGE’S FACULTY HOLD THE HIGHEST DEGREES IN THEIR FIELDS. THEY ARE ON THE CUTTING-EDGE OF THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS AND MOST RECENT RESEARCH IN THEIR AREAS OF STUDY. They also pursue their quest for knowledge outside the classroom by writing books, conducting research, performing in concerts and in many other ways. For example: • Katie Larsen Smith ‘09, assistant professor of sport science and health education, published a manuscript in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health. The work was part of her dissertation titled, “Web-Based Behavioral Intervention Increases Maternal Exercise but Does Not Prevent Excessive Gestational Weight Gain in Previously Sedentary Women.” • Nick Proctor, professor of history, served on the panel of “The Radical Power of Play in the Humanities” at Cabrini College, Radnor, Pa. He also facilitated “Greenwich Village, 1913,” a twoday workshop for faculty and graduate students at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.

36

• Shane Cox, assistant professor of accounting, accompanied eight students to the Iowa Society of CPAs Career Awareness Conference (CAC). The CAC is held every other year, offering sessions for students to learn about the profession and providing them with an opportunity to network with employers and students from other colleges. There are countless other examples of the ways in which Simpson faculty demonstrate leadership and achieve success in their chosen fields. However, their greatest talent is their ability to pass on their expertise and excitement for learning and research to Simpson students.
