JORDAN
POPE
FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS AT SIMPSON CAN GET INVOLVED FROM THEIR FIRST DAY ON CAMPUS. Ask Jordan Pope. Jordan, who grew up in Albia, Iowa, joined the Simpson Speech & Debate Team and became part of the team’s national debate championship. He’s also interested in politics, and there’s no better place to be than Simpson College during the start of a presidential election campaign.
4
SIMPSON COLLEGE
Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses gave Jordan the opportunity to meet – and take “selfies” with – almost every presidential candidate, as well as other dignitaries like former President Bill Clinton.
The Des Moines Register published a feature story about Jordan’s pursuit of candidate photographs. “The opportunities here are unlimited,” he said. “You don’t have to limit yourself to one particular interest. You hit the ground running and get involved as a first-year student in anything you want.” He added: “I definitely made the right decision to come here.”
“BECAUSE I CHOSE SIMPSON, I WAS ABLE TO MEET ALMOST ALL OF THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES RUNNING FOR OFFICE IN 2016.”
IT’S A DIFFERENT KIND OF THINKING AT SIMPSON. The kind that reshapes an entire curriculum so students develop the knowledge, creativity and skills that 21st century employers are looking for. It’s why our students study around the world.
IT’S LEARNING BROUGHT TO LIFE.

A PERSONALIZED EDUCATION At Simpson, you will be taught by a professor, not a graduate assistant. Most of our professors hold the highest degrees in their field. They’re acclaimed scholars who could teach virtually anywhere, but choose to be here for our intimate setting, our distinctive approach to learning and our commitment to service. Our smaller class sizes mean that you will get the personal attention you deserve. You won’t be an anonymous face in a large lecture hall. Simpson professors invest the time to get to know you as a person—your hopes, your dreams. Someday, your professors may be writing recommendations on your behalf to employers and graduate schools. Wouldn’t you want them to know you? At Simpson, they will.
MOLLY
MONK
MOLLY MONK CAN SUM UP HER SIMPSON CAREER IN ONE WORD—— OPPORTUNITY. “It has been amazing,” says Molly, who is a Culver Fellow from Rochester, Minn., with a double major in Political Science and International Relations, with minors in French and Religion. How did Molly spend her senior year? By being elected senior class president. By presenting research at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Seattle with her team from the Bryan Summer Research Program. By developing and implementing a new speaker series on campus. By winning second place in the Startup Weekend Cedar Rapids competition for the company she founded, Snark Nation, which sells snarky political postcards. By being invited to ask a question to presidential candidates at the Brown and Black Forum. And by working with Alpha Psi Omega, the honorary theatre fraternity, to create a studentrun event for Women’s History Month. Molly credits her relationships with Simpson professors for helping to make so many opportunities available.

EMERGE@Simpson is an innovative program that allows students to gain real world experiences in a business incubator environment. Through this integrated learning, students can either bring their own idea or join a venture and essentially build a business from the ground up. EMERGE is a place for selfstarters, creative thinkers and people who are driven to get things done. It is an opportunity to put into action what you are learning in your classes and to build a strong resumé with real world experiences.
For 13 consecutive years Simpson has fielded more teams than any institution in the United States for the Mathematical & Interdisciplinary Competition in Modeling. In recent years, several Simpson teams have received Meritorious Awards, which recognize the top 10-15 percent of participants.
I O WA HI STORY CEN TER The Iowa History Center is a unique resource for Simpson students. The center promotes and preserves the state’s history in a variety of ways, from bringing distinguished speakers to campus to offering internships. The Distinguished Scholars Program invites students to work with the Center and provides scholarships.

MIKELS PARK MIKELS KNEW WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN HE ARRIVED AT SIMPSON, THANKS TO HIS OLDER BROTHER, BLAISE, WHO GRADUATED IN 2012. “I was able to experience it firsthand by visiting him and sitting in on some of his classes,” says Park, who is from Bloomfield, Iowa. “I was also able to see how Simpson College was able to contribute to his success and push him to be the best that he could be.” Park is majoring in Mathematics and Computer Science. He is part of a Simpson team researching how to slow the spread of an invasive weed across Iowa that could prove damaging to the state’s agricultural interests. The research advisor, Rick Spellerberg, professor of mathematics, has “fostered an environment where it was fun to work, and his relentless dedication encouraged us all to contribute to the best of our abilities.” Park also has participated in the math modeling competitions, in which teams of students are given 96 hours to work on a problem and produce a research paper. “It’s a great way to strengthen teamwork skills while also applying abstract concepts to realworld problems,” he says.

M CLAIN
ONE OF JACOB MCLAIN’S FIRST CLASSES AT SIMPSON COLLEGE TURNED OUT TO BE ONE THAT WOULD SHAPE NOT ONLY HIS ACADEMIC PATH, BUT ALSO HIS PERSPECTIVE OF THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY. “During my first semester, I took a World Religions course,” he said. “I really enjoyed the class because I had not previously been exposed to religious diversity. It was all so new to me.” He decided to pursue a religion major, with a focus on the Islamic state. However, he knew he needed to get closer to the situation in order to begin addressing these challenging issues. That’s exactly what Jacob did. In the summer of 2015, he spent three months in Tel Aviv, Israel completing a research internship that looked at what it is about the Islamic state that is so appealing to young men and women. “The experience was so valuable,” he said. “Better understanding the problem is critical to finding a solution, and I’m committed to that now more than ever.”

BUILDING ON OUR TRADITIONS We’re always looking for ways to improve the Simpson Experience. Recent projects include the $14 million Kent Campus Center, a popular destination for students. While there, you can visit, study or select from several food and snack options, including Au Bon Pain café and bakery, Red Mango, Tyler’s Grille, and Millie’s—a coffee shop featuring Starbucks products. Theatre majors and theatergoers alike praise the recent renovation of the Blank Performing Arts Center, which added 17,000 square feet and space for specialized classrooms. We also provide our students and athletes with a first-class facility to achieve their athletic and fitness potential. The Steven Johnson Fitness Center opened in January 2014
and provides students with an excellent, comprehensive space to workout. The two-tier facility features a 5,500-square-foot strength and conditioning center and a 4,500-square-foot exercise and fitness center. There is also additional classroom and meeting space for the clinical health science and exercise science departments. While we celebrate our new and improved facilities, we also cherish our traditions—events such as Yell Like Hell, Campus Day and the All College Sing are an important part of the Simpson Experience. Whether you’re walking to class with other students, cheering on the Storm or enjoying a music recital in a plush auditorium, you can feel the Simpson spirit everywhere on campus.
YOUR LIFE ON CAMPUS WILL BE MEMORABLE.

Professors care about every student and go out of their way to help you. It’s a perfect fit for me, and I am so glad that I made the decision to transfer here.”

But Cortez took a leap of faith—and it has paid off. “The music department here at Simpson is the largest support group I have ever been a part of,” he says. “The professors here truly enjoy grooming all of their students into fine musicians, and it shows.” Cortez is majoring in Music Education, and so far he has participated in Opera, Chamber Choir, Jazz Band and Symphonic Band. “My professor, Dr. Michael Patterson, has been a very important influence in my musical development,” he says. “He has helped my research skills immensely and also has helped me accomplish things that I never dreamed I could accomplish.”
