ACADEMICS

SIMPSON’S INNOVATIVE CURRICULUM IS DESIGNED TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS. Our curriculum allows students to delve deeper and focus on projects that provide hands on understanding of the subject matter. Students are encouraged to take advantage of Simpson’s community partnerships, hold internships, and conduct independent research. Simpson students will take two courses to bookend their academic experience: The SIMPSON COLLOQUIUM and the SENIOR CAPSTONE. The colloquium is designed to help students transition to college life, while the capstone serves as a research project in each student’s major to demonstrate their proficiency in that field of study.

MATH MODELING

We take great pride in our commitment to undergraduate research. Students work alongside faculty members in every academic discipline, which helps students reach their full potential and position themselves for graduate school or employment upon graduation.

Since 2003, Simpson has fielded more teams than any institution in the United States for the Mathematical & Interdisciplinary Competition in Modeling. In recent years, Simpson teams have received meritorious awards, which recognize the top 10-15% of participants. This is a global competition, and a great opportunity for students to work collaboratively to hone their information literacy skills.

To celebrate research achievements, Simpson holds an Undergraduate Research Symposium each spring at which students present their findings in a variety of ways.

SERVICE Community service is a strong pillar of the Simpson experience, and contributes to the academic landscape as well.

“SERVICE IS PART OF THE CULTURE AND HISTORY AT SIMPSON COLLEGE. THERE ARE COUNTLESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT THROUGH SERVICE LEARNING IN THE CLASSROOM OR CO-CURRICULAR VOLUNTEERING WITH CAMPUS GROUPS AND CLUBS.” - ANNA PENA Director, First-Year Experience and Community Engagement

CULVER CENTER OF PUBLIC POLICY The Culver Center of Public Policy serves as an excellent opportunity for students to engage in the political process. Culver Fellows are dedicated to civic engagement, public service, and career development. Each year the Culver Fellows dive into leadership and engagement roles on campus and beyond to make their mark in the political landscape. By planning, organizing, and publicizing events to interning with local and state representatives on election campaigns—Culver Fellows are able to make an impact each year thanks to the robust political environment Iowa has to offer. Fellows typically take advantage of the Capitol Hill Internship Program (CHIP) and participate in conferences and programs with other colleges including the National Campaign for Political and Civic Engagement at Harvard’s Institute for Politics.

PHILOSOPHY FROM INSTITUTIONAL CORRUPTION TO THE ETHICS OF TODAY’S LAWS AND REGULATIONS, THE FACE OF THE WORLD IS CHANGING RAPIDLY. The ability to think critically and communicate effectively is at the foundation of Simpson’s programs in philosophy. Programs in philosophy, applied philosophy and ethics aim to develop both a deepened self-awareness and a global perspective. • Studying philosophy is greatly beneficial to students pursuing a wide variety of careers, including law, politics, business, journalism, public policy, law enforcement and education. • For those students interested specifically in ethics, the department offers an exciting and innovative minor with an ethics concentration. Given the ethical scandals of the last decade, this is a common and logical choice for students seeking to stand out amongst job applicants in the fields of medicine, law, political science, business or criminal justice. • All faculty members in the philosophy department are dedicated to researching and publishing in their field and using that research in their classrooms. They are also strongly committed to promoting student research; students don’t just study philosophy, they become philosophers by doing original research, attending conferences (often with professors) and participating in on-going philosophy/ applied philosophy/ethics reading groups on campus. • Simpson’s philosophy department, in particular, has a strong record of sending philosophy majors to excellent law schools, medical schools and graduate schools—often with full scholarships. •
