Urban Morphosis
DESIGN STATEMENT
Urban Morphosis Even though bridges are meant to connect, urban bridges tend to tear the urban fabric, creating anomalies in the city densification. The idea for this project is to inhibit all the functions a city has, making it a city bridge with a multitude of functions from housing to work, from leisure the public space. The site is located in Prague, Czech Republic. More accurately it is on the Vltava river, due to its loaction the general wind direction of prague is highly influenced by the additional wind movement along the Vltava’s path. Located on the northern hemispehere, the sun path is on the South with direct sunlight due to the lacking presence of 3D objects on the site. The purpose of this design is to preserve the existing structure to its best while finding a viable and sustainable solution to build on an urban bridge. S.Birsel, 05/2018

CONCEPT
The bridge being built in and valued for its cubic style, the new massings complement the old with an influence from suprematism & constructivism. To repair the city scape the massings gradually grow lower from West to East finally connecting to the Rohansky Island - stated in the diagram above.

The building envelope is constitued out of 4 cubic massings made of a lightweight metal structure with a white concrete finish. They are positioned along the bridge, each located around the foundations of the arches for better structural strength.

MASS 1: PROGRAM & STRUCTURE

Program for each mass is divided according to dayligh & sunlight needs for each funciton/room. The elongated lenght and narrow depth design of the volumes - apart the ones for circulaiton - makes them optimal for light penetration giving each room a high daylight factor. Along the birdge, a Traffic Control system is applied for decreased street noise and vibrations - that are especially amplified on a bridge due to the same origin of foundation for the massings as for the bridge. Two vertical shafts and one horizontal shaft (in red) are placed on the exterior of each mass for circulation with easy access and handicap friendly. The stability of the structure is assured by the cantilever system of the masses from the bridge with horizontal steel tubes spanning all along the river to add to its reinforcement, finally the horizontal circulation shaft serves as a general stiffening element. Apart reinforcement, these tubes are used for MEP purposes, supplying with water and electricity located within its hollow core.

BUILDING ENVIRONMENT
Thermal Comfort With no surrounding 3D objects, the only shading form direct sunlight are the overhangs of the platforms acting as louvers. Their lenghts are calculated according to the angle of the sun’s position all around the year for proper shading. The northern side of the masses are partially shaded by the masses on the southen side.
18
DIAGRAMS
Light & Solar Potential Apart their use for shading, the platforms work as double sided light shelves with the reflecting light from the water, resulting in extremly high diffusion of light through the spaces. In addition to the platforms, adjustable light shelves are positioned for good natural lighting during every season.

BUILDING ENVIRONMENT
Ventilation The general wind direction going back and forth along the river, each mass has its own gaps acting as a natural ventilation system through air circulation and cooling, it also diminishes the wind load applied to the mass. Additional HVAC units and cross-ventilation systems with oppening at North and South - are positioned on each mass for clean and rich air.

DIAGRAMS
Acoustics Along the birdge, the traffic is regulated by slowing down for decreased street noise and vibrations that are especially amplified on a bridge due to the same origin of foundation for the massings as for the bridge.

ISLAND CONCEPT: ROHANSKY OSTROV
After spanning across the Vlatava river, the bridge passes above the Rohansky Island. A ramp is situated on each side for access over the Rohansky Park made of greenerie, vegetation and human scale pavillions. The pavillions are all in wood to blend in and emphasis the simplicity of nature each designed in a different style to create a different effect on the user to admire the shattering light, the park and the views looking in different directions.
