TianGan (Heavenly Stems) and DiZhi (Earthly Branches), commonly abbreviated to GanZhi, originated in the ancient Chinese cosmological sciences and is a complex calendrical system which was created to codify the patterns of life and of the universe itself. The ten symbols of Gan express the Yin or Yang perspective of Five Elements and embody the Way of Heaven. The 12 symbols of Zhi, made manifest in the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, hold the root of each Element and embrace the Way of Earth. In this book Master Zhongxian Wu and Dr Karin Taylor Wu provide a detailed explanation of the 22 GanZhi symbols outlining the characteristics. Offering a rare insight into the subtleties and farreaching influence of this ancient system, this book will be a essential aid for anyone seeking a deep understanding of Chinese medicine, FengShui, Chinese astrology, traditional Chinese cosmology, Qigong, Taiji, and other inner cultivation practices. ‘Zhongxian Wu and Karin Taylor Wu have accomplished the feat of producing a readable account of Gan-Zhi, one of the most complex subjects among the gnostic sciences of ancient China.’ - Heiner Fruehauf, PhD, Founding Professor, School of Classical Chinese Medicine, National College of Natural Medicine

The Compleat Acupuncturist A Guide to Constitutional and Conditional Pulse Diagnosis Peter Eckman, M.D., Ph.D., M. Ac.(UK) Foreword by William Morris
cros cult sapp ural roac hes
January 2014 320pp ISBN: 9781848191983 pb £30.00 / $49.95
In this highly original and authoritative book, Peter Eckman takes pulse diagnosis as a common thread that links and integrates the various disciplines of Oriental medicine, and shows that they are in fact related by a common origin several thousand years ago. The text describes the clinical details used in a variety of acupuncture styles, synthesizing them into a coherent whole, and illustrating the usefulness of this model with an extensive presentation of case histories. The book presents a wealth of material that is not commonly available in Indian (Ayurveda), Korean or Chinese medicine, as well as other traditions of Oriental medicine, including the only thorough presentation of Korean Constitutional Acupuncture in English, based on the author’s personal study under its originator. ‘Peter Eckman’s accomplishment in The Compleat Acupuncturist is truly remarkable. It is a grand synthesis that certainly ranks as one of the most significant texts on pulse diagnosis in the history of the medicine.’ - Lonny Jarrett, M. Ac., author of Nourishing Destiny: The Inner Tradition of Chinese Medicine

The Cornerstone Classics of Chinese Medicine Tongue Diagnosis - The Ao Shi Shang Han Jin Jing Lu, and the Shang Han She Jian Ioannis Solos Forewords by Professor Liang Rong and Professor Chen Jia-xu
Two of the major texts in the history of tongue diagnosis are presented and put into context in this volume, reaffirming the strength of tongue diagnosis as a core diagnostic method. These key texts are made available to western readers for the first time, with typical, traditional Chinese editions reproduced alongside the translation. The author provides an excellent overview of the tongue diagnosis theories in the major classics prior to the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), and discusses significant developments and publications. The Gold Mirror Records, first published in 1341, was a popular manual for centuries, appearing in many editions and variations. Tongue Reflections in Cold Damage, first published in 1668, developed the field of diagnosis as a whole by adopting the analysis of tongue colour as its main principle. Both texts are introduced with meticulous English translations and notes. ‘Now, for the first time practitioners and scholars in the West can learn from the same sources as colleagues in China and East Asia.’

lab tests for Chinese Medicine
March 2014 96pp ISBN: 9781848192058 pb £12.99 / $19.95 BIC: VXHT1 MBGL
Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners often need to understand Western medical testing to recognize when laboratory tests are required and to read and interpret test results that are brought to them by patients. This book is an essential reference for the TCM classroom and clinic that teaches how to use and understand conventional lab testing in the treatment and referral of patients. Focusing on symptoms that commonly present in TCM practices, the book groups the lab tests by diseases or systems. Within each chapter are TCM case studies and perspectives, as well as multiple choice quizzes that test the reader’s knowledge. Co-written by a doctor of Western medicine and an acupuncture physician, the book aims to familiarize TCM practitioners with the terminology and methodology of lab tests, bridging the gap between Eastern and Western schools of medicine and promoting an integrative approach to improve the overall care of the patient.

Andrew Mason is an expert in Eastern Alchemy. He started studying holistic medicine 20 years ago and completing his training as an Ayurveda practitioner in 2006. He then undertook a unique and intensive apprenticeship in the east, learning the closely guarded processes involved in the manufacturing of these ancient remedies. Since his return to the U.K., Andrew has undertaken the task of recording and cataloguing these traditional processes, preserving these techniques which in some cases would have remained as tenuous oral traditions only.

Fragrance and Wellbeing Plant Aromatics and Their Influence on the Psyche Jennifer Peace Rhind October 2013 448pp ISBN: 9781848190900 pb £28.00 / $45.00 BIC: VXHC VXH
For thousands of years fragrance has been used, across many varied cultures, for altering mental and emotional states, and as part of spiritual practice. This book explores the impact of fragrance on the psyche from biological, anthropological, perfumery and aromatherapy viewpoints. Beginning with an exploration of our olfactory system and a discussion of the language of odour, the book examines the ways in which fragrance can influence our perceptions and experiences. It introduces us to a broad range of fragrance types – woody, resinous, spicy, herbaceous, agrestic, floral and citrus, as well as the attars that form part of Unani Tibb medicine. Traditional and contemporary uses and the mood-enhancing properties of fragrance types are presented. The book then provides an overview of the theoretical and philosophical frameworks that have been used to analyse how and why we choose fragrance. Finally readers are given guidance on how to cultivate their olfactory palate, which reveals a new dimension in the use of fragrance to enhance wellbeing.

A Sensory Journey Meditations on Scent for Wellbeing
card set
Jennifer Peace Rhind December 2013 24pp ISBN: 9781848191532 Cards £15.00 / $19.95 BIC: VXHC VXM
Scent is often used to accompany meditation but is rarely the focus of it. By meditating on the fragrance itself, rather than using it as an adjunct to other meditation rituals (through burning incense or scented candles), fragrance can go beyond merely enhancing or modifying our moods and become a key means to personal and spiritual growth. These cards, and the accompanying booklet and sensory map, explore different fragrances and make the benefits of scent meditation accessible to all. Each of the 24 cards, which are arranged in botanical groupings, features a scent description, an image of the botanical source, and inspirational words about the scent’s evocative influence to help guide meditation. ‘Deliciously evocative, A Sensory Journey is a mixture of knowledge and pure scent-sations. An exquisite mix of cultural and historical notions that makes you understand the value behind every scent, as well as its properties and potential benefits in specific situations.’ - Carlotta Zorzi, Marketing Manager at Scent Sciences Corporation

Biochemical Imbalances in Disease A Practitioner’s Handbook Edited by Lorraine Nicolle and Ann Woodriff Beirne Foreword by David S. Jones MD, FABFP
Biochemical imbalances caused by nutritional deficiencies are a contributory factor in chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune conditions and cancer. This handbook for practitioners explains how to identify and treat such biochemical imbalances in order to better understand and manage a patient’s ill-health. The book examines a range of biochemical imbalances, including compromised adrenal or thyroid function, gastro-intestinal imbalances, immune system problems and sex hormone imbalances, and explains how and why such states occur. It pulls together a wide range of evidence to show how such imbalances are involved in the most common chronic diseases. It helps practitioners to understand how to identify the imbalances through appropriate case history taking and laboratory testing, and how to design and implement effective nutritional interventions. Developed by leading academics and practitioners in the fields of nutritional therapy and functional medicine, this evidence-informed approach can be used with all patients who present in clinic, regardless of whether or not they have a ‘named medical condition’. In the final chapter, a case example illustrates how to use the theoretical information in the practice of treating patients with chronically compromised health.
