Spray Tanning to a “T”

By Jessalyn Holsing

Oh, how we love to bask in a beautiful, youthful summer-tan glow reminiscent of days spent lazing in the sun, frolicking as kids and teens without a care in the world. You can do this easily – anytime – by introducing yourself to spray tanning! In this fast-paced world spray-tanning has become a great option to achieve that lovely youthful bronze and glow in a pinch. The first time it can be a bit intimidating, just be aware that spray-tanning is all about preparation and maintenance, seek a professional to help you choose the best spray tan option for you.

First, what is a Spray Tan? A Spray Tan is a fine mist sprayed onto your body. This mist has an ingredient in it called Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) that interacts with your own skin’s chemistry to turn the color of your skin into a beautiful tan or bronze color.

We talked to our local Spray Tan experts at Year Round Brown, about prepping for a perfect, gorgeous glow along with advice on how to make sure your tan is suburb and steady. Year Round Brown offer two types of spray tanning: Booth Spray Tan and Airbrush Spray Tan. Both are applied as a heated spray with strikefree results. While the VersaPro automated is a quick walk-in option, Airbrush Spray Tanning does require an appointment. The airbrushed tan is a more luxurious and personalized option. An airbrush artist can custom contour your entire body in pristine locations such as the cheekbones, chest, abdominal section, and legs; some additional luxury add-ons include color-matching areas of your body and providing a dry powder when the airbrush is completed.

Today’s spray tans are as subtle and sophisticated as ever. Spray Tanning solutions now offer a variety of colors and tones customizable to light, medium, dark, or extra dark depending on the desires of the client. An instant bronze spray tan with cool toned violet-based solution will help to neutralize yellow color with warm undertones leaving you with a beautiful, fresh from the tropics look. An instant bronze spray tan with warm toned cosmetic bronze will give you that classic beach bronze tan. A Clear Bronzer is the “no fuss” bronzer that allows you to leave the salon with no instant color in your spray tan, the real bronze developing 4-8 hours after your tan. Your spray tan experts at Year Round Brown will ask you questions like, “what event are you tanning for, when is the event, and how dark of a tan are

you desiring?” Based upon the clients answers they will advise which type of spray tanning service best fits your needs.

Leading up to your spray tan, it is recommended that all spa-type treatments (manicures, pedicures, waxing, etc.) are done at least one day prior, and to shower, shave, and exfoliate the night before or morning of a treatment. Exfoliating your skin thoroughly will help ensure the tanning mist latches onto your pores, helping to give you a smooth bronze. Make sure to avoid lotions or anything that will leave any residue on your skin, and arrive at your appointment in loose, dark clothing to make sure as little bronzing is transferred to your clothes as possible.

Airbrush Spray Tanning is luxuriously personalized and customizable–down to what you wear for your appointment. Spray tans are a judgement free zone. If going fully nude makes you uncomfortable you can wear swimwear or undergarments.

After your appointment, to ensure an extension of your spray tan’s life, use a salon quality Tan Extending daily moisturizer and body wash. These products are formulated specifically to help your tan last as long as possible. Immediately after your spray tan avoid swimming pools, don’t work out to a sweat, and avoid water/rain. Do not shower for at least 6-8 hours, (or the length of time recommended by your tan expert) to make sure your skin latches on to optimum color! All of these steps will help extend the life of your spray tan, making sure you have the best color possible for as long as possible.

Spray tanning is a wonderful way to give yourself a quick, beautiful bronze that fits you perfectly. A spray tan should last 5-10 days, depending on the tan you select, the activities you perform, and how well you take care of your tan after your appointment. For special events, Year Round Brown suggests a trial run of your spray tan 3-4 weeks in advance. Get the glow “that’s all you”, and boldly walk with color this summer with your luxurious Spray Tan!

Year Round Brown takes walk-in VersaPro Spray Tans at all 10 locations and Airbrush appointments can be booked online at yearroundbrown.com/airbrush. n
