Embracing Curly and Wavy Hair

Maintaining curly and wavy hair is not an easy task for many women. Megan Gerken, owner of Tristate Curls Co. in Sibley, IA, is a hairstylist and curl specialist who helps women view their curly hair in a new light.

Gerken graduated from Stewart School in 2011 and went on to New York City to be trained as a DevaCurl stylist, becoming an expert in cutting, styling, and caring for curly and wavy hair. After NYC, she returned to Worthington, MN, to work for a few months and then moved to Minneapolis where she worked at a curly hair salon for several years in Uptown.

She returned to NYC twice and then had a short stint in Los Angeles before coming back to the Midwest and settling down in Sibley. She is married to a cattle farmer and has two children.

“I wanted to get back to this area because I love it here. It’s a great community, and I love being close to family and being able to do what I love,” Gerken said.

Gerken noticed a lack of hairstylists in the area who truly understood how to cut and style curly and wavy hair, which motivated her to open her own salon, Tristate Curls Co., in 2021. She has clients in

Sibley, but says most of her clients travel from South Dakota, Minnesota, and other parts of Iowa.

She says when her clients book with her, they will receive more than a haircut; they will also be educated on how to wash, style, and maintain their curls.

“Women are embracing their curly hair,” Gerken said. “I want to help them navigate loving their hair and being able to live with more ease in their curly hair.”

Gerken is the only stylist in the salon, so her clients have oneon-one time with her to ask questions about their curls or they can just sit in the quiet and enjoy a cup of coffee. For clients with children, there is a play area in the back of the salon to occupy them.

Gerken carries and uses hair products that are made for wavy and curly hair and will help you find the best products for your hair. She also cuts curls dry, which is the best technique to use when styling curly hair.

“I’m really happy to be back and to take care of the curly girls in the area,” Gerken said.
