aintaining curly and wavy hair is not an easy task for many women. Megan Gerken, owner of Tristate Curls Co. in Sibley, IA, is a hairstylist and curl specialist who helps women view their curly hair in a new light.
Gerken graduated from Stewart School in 2011 and went on to New York City to be trained as a DevaCurl stylist, becoming an expert in cutting, styling, and caring for curly and wavy hair. After NYC, she returned to Worthington, MN, to work for a few months and then moved to Minneapolis where she worked at a curly hair salon for several years in Uptown. She returned to NYC twice and then had a short stint in Los Angeles before coming back to the Midwest and settling down in Sibley. She is married to a cattle farmer and has two children. “I wanted to get back to this area because I love it here. It’s a great community, and I love being close to family and being able to do what I love,” Gerken said. Gerken noticed a lack of hairstylists in the area who truly understood how to cut and style curly and wavy hair, which motivated her to open her own salon, Tristate Curls Co., in 2021.
