SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA
Discovering Nature
A couples hiking guide
By Chellee Unruh
Hiking, often seen as a solo pursuit, can be a powerful way to strengthen relationships. Couples who venture into the great outdoors together can discover shared passions, uncover hidden strengths, and navigate challenges— both literal and metaphorical—as a team.
Beyond the physical benefits of hiking, such as improved cardiovascular health and bone density, it offers significant mental health advantages. Hiking can reduce stress, enhance mental well-being, and provide a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life
It is also a great way to spend quality time together. Getting off the grid and into the wilderness is a rejuvenating experience best shared with a partner, especially during the fall in South Dakota. The colors of fall, the crisp feel of the autumn air and the breathtaking views create a natural romantic environment drawing you in and making you feel a deeper connection with your partner as you connect with mother nature.
If you’re new to hiking, the Outdoor Campus in Sioux Falls is a fantastic starting point. With trails on campus, maps of other locations, and hiking experts to help you launch your hiking journey.
For those seeking more adventurous trails, the South Dakota
Together Together
Game, Fish and Park website offers a comprehensive list of state parks with hiking trails and maps.
Before embarking on your first hike, there are a few key preparations required. Start by planning your route. Use a map or hiking app to plan your route and download necessary maps in advance. Bring a pack of essentials including plenty of water, snacks, and a light source in case the hike takes longer than you expected. Protect yourself by wearing good shoes, sunscreen, and layers of clothing for the changing elevations and temperatures. It is also a good idea to let friends or family know about your hiking adventure and when you expect to return.
Once you are on the trail, be mindful of your surroundings. Watch out for poisonous plants and wild animals as they could turn your first hike from a dream adventure to a nightmare in minutes. It is best to stick to the trails as outlined on the map. Most of all respect others and Mother Nature when you are out there. Dispose of trash properly and give right of way to passing hikers.
By following these tips and embracing the challenges and rewards of hiking together, couples can create lasting memories and strengthen their bond. So, what are you waiting for? Lace-up your boots and hit the trail! n

Adoptive parents create scholarship fund to help others choosing adoption
By Natalie Slieter | Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks
Austin and Lindsey Claeys reside in Brandon, SD, with their sweet newborn, Brooks. They adopted Brooks in June 2024, starting their adoption journey at the beginning of 2023. They always knew they wanted to be parents, but the road to get there was not an easy one.
“After about four years of trying and numerous doctor visits, we learned that we could not conceive on our own. We spent the next several months talking to each other and praying together about what we should do next. We decided together that adoption was the way to start our family. We both feel so strongly that this has always been the path we were meant to take,” Austin and Lindsey said.
In early 2023, just a couple of months after they started the adoption process, they were chosen by a birth mom to adopt her baby. However, after about five months of waiting,
the birth mom decided to parent. The Claeys' took time to process that loss before trying to adopt again. When they were chosen to adopt Brooks in April, they guarded their hearts - in case it would end the same way. But thankfully, it didn’t.
As they navigated their adoption journey, All About U Adoptions (AAU) was there for them every step of the way. Coleen Brasch, founder and director of AAU, explains that AAU provides training to adoptive parents on bonding and attachment, discusses the importance of birth parents, and offers lifelong support through counseling, social events, and mentoring opportunities.
Now that Austin and Lindsey are on the other side of the adoption process, they have focused on creating an avenue that will award grants to others who have experienced
infertility and are going through the adoption process. The Claeys' share that adopting is incredibly expensive and many adoptive parents come out of the process thousands of dollars in debt.
“When Lindsey and I were applying for financial assistance to assist with the financial commitment of becoming parents through adoption, we found that there weren’t any adoption grant foundations or non-profits in Sioux Falls, let alone South Dakota, that offer grant assistance. There are numerous grant opportunities throughout the United States, but the idea was to create an opportunity for families in the Midwest,” Austin shared.
The Claeys' approached Coleen at AAU to ask if they would partner with them to create the Sunshine Scholarship Fund. “We named it this because Brooks brought a ray of sunshine back into our lives.”
By partnering with AAU, the Claeys' will be able to raise more funds for the non-profit, and therefore, grant dollars to more adoptive families to help with the financial commitment of adoption. The use of a non-profit adoption agency like AAU is critical to the success of all parties of the adoption triad (birth parents, adoptive parents, and child).
“I was excited that someone wanted to take on creating grants for adoptive parents,” Brasch said. “Austin and Lindsey see the need because they lived the experience.”
The Sunshine Scholarship Fund is still in the beginning stages, but the Claeys' hope to begin securing funds for the grants immediately. To learn more and donate funds to the non-profit, please contact Austin at austinclaeys@ gmail.com
“Adoption is a beautiful journey, but it is a choice that comes with a serious financial commitment. Many families who dream of adopting a child are held back by the high costs of the adoption process. That’s where the Sunshine Scholarship Fund comes in.” n

PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY, YOUR FINANCES, AND YOUR FUTURE
Creating a unique financial planning process to transform good intentions into great results for special-needs families is imperative.
FOR BRYCE ANDERSEN , helping others has always been his lifetime goal. As a wealth adviser, his passion is to specialize in assisting families to navigate the unique challenges of planning for a loved one with a disability because of his personal experience. Growing up with a sister who has a severe disability, he has a deep understanding and empathy for others who live with special needs challenges every day. “My sister was abandoned at birth and left in a hospital. My parents took her home to care for her, and she never left. I was six. It became clear as my sister wasn’t hitting her developmental milestones that something was different. Eventually, my sister was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and is a non-verbal quadriplegic for life. I was her chief confidant and playmate growing up. I’m still doing that as an adult, personally and
professionally. I’m a client of my own work. This isn’t just a profession. It’s my life too.”
For special-needs families, the day-to-day caregiving complications often overshadow the importance of long-range financial planning. According to Bryce, “Traditional financial planning is a reality. Special needs planning is a separate reality. It’s like planning for three realities simultaneously. The parents, the individual, and the rest of the family. Each has its own emotional, psychological, and financial needs and requirements. One always has to think about the other.”
For these families, a myriad of legal requirements, in addition to changing resources and laws, additional complicated layers are added to the ever-changing needs of children as they grow. Bryce shares,
“Financial anxiety chains people to fear. Clarity liberates them. Planning keeps them free. Whether you were born or brought into the Special Needs life, I’m here to help...now and in the future.”
“Special needs children typically don’t grow into fully independent adults. They do, however, grow old. They need care and dignity. So does the rest of the family. We balance the forces of constant change with the reality of continuous care.”
Bryce wanted to use his rare expertise to create a platform to serve special needs families in a way that was by, for, and because of special needs. It was what he wanted for his family. He shared, “I have the brain of a planner, the soul of a guide, and the heart of a caregiver. My role is to ensure that the whole family can improve their quality of life while accomplishing their highest financial priorities.” By offering the combination of the highest levels of special needs and traditional planning Impact Wealth Management is a rare offering in Sioux Falls for all families and their unique situations.

Fun
Functional, Fall Fashion
By Jessalyn Holsing
Fashion is comfortable and functional this year as we move through autumn and head towards colder weather. Last year was all about puffy jackets, but this year’s market is leaning into the comfort and warmth of wool coats. We’re seeing a lot of double-breasted designs with large pockets, making bold statements without patterned fabrics, leaning into shape blocking for both form and full functionality—and finally, pockets that can hold both your gloves and your keys!
True to early fall, there’s still the luxurious fur comeback we’ve been waiting for. Whether a full fur coat or just a fur lining, fur is always one of the best materials for keeping warm. Furlined gloves or a fur scarf also more than do the trick. There seems to be a trend in color with brown and beige, but there will always be classic black fur and shades of gray to mix and match your favorite outfits for chilly weather.
Finally, sweaters are always a staple every time fall rolls around, and we’re happy to don luxurious cable knits in oversized sweaters for maximum coziness. Pull on some fleece-lined tights because midi skirts are here to stay despite the temperature falling! For shoes, kitten-heel boots are making the rounds, along with ballet flats and mules.
This year’s fall fashions are classy and vintage mixed with supreme comfort, one of my favorite combinations! So don’t be afraid to try something new, and enjoy how warm you can stay while wearing something that will turn heads your way. n

Encompass Wellness:
CREATING A PATH TO OPTIMAL HEALTH
MARY J. JORDAN is a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner and owner of Encompass Wellness in Sioux Falls and Dakota Dunes, SD. Mary has more than two decades of providing healthcare within the community. She has made it her life’s passion to find the root cause of health problems with a preventative approach using functional medicine. “So many people expect as we age that it is normal to feel unwell,” she explains. “They go to their primary care providers and are told that everything looks ‘normal’ - but they know something isn’t right because they don’t feel well.”
In opening Encompass Wellness, her mission is to partner with patients on their wellness journey. “We do talk to patients about their lifestyle habits, sleep, stress, and everything that could be making them feel less than their best.” One area that has become a specialty for Mary is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) - using bioidentical hormones for both women and men. When hormones are optimized, we can reverse many ailments and health issues associated with aging. “As we age, our endocrine system decreases the produc-
tion of hormones, affecting a wide range of processes in the body as there are androgen receptors in every organ of our body.
For women, losing testosterone causes fatigue, weight gain, joint pain, hot flashes, night sweats, brain fog, moodiness, and low libido. Men experience fatigue, weight gain, decreased muscle strength, changes in sleep, ED, and a decreased libido. The important thing we want people to know is that they don’t have to accept this as just a part of aging and that it is reversible.” The clinic works with patients to create a customized treatment plan based on labs and symptoms. The HRT is bioidentical to what the body makes in the form of a pellet that is the size of a grain of rice. The pellets are placed subcutaneously in the upper buttocks. “For Encompass Wellness: CREATING A PATH TO OPTIMAL HEALTH for men and women, we see relief of symptoms within 1-2 weeks after the pellet insertion.”
Encompass Wellness emphasizes personalized care, using high-quality products and the latest technologies to ensure optimal results for their patients. The
newest additions to the clinic are Vtone, FormaV, and Morpheus 8V which are used for vaginal rejuvenation. The Vtone uses electric magnetic stimulation (EMS) to tighten the pelvic floor to improve urinary incontinence and frequency. A single treatment is equivalent to 22,000 kegels and takes 40 minutes. Incontinence affects many women and is a simple solution to an embarrassing issue. When paired with FormaV we can address elasticity and vaginal dryness all in one visit. The treatments are painless with little downtime.
Weight management is another passion of hers, having lost 50 pounds using semaglutide herself. Mary has years of experience with medical weight loss medications as she cared for many diabetics with the medications before they were FDA approved for weight loss. She has created a comprehensive weight loss program that includes in-depth labs to see if the body is working against you. We offer medical grade vitamins based on patients’ labs to help them reach their goal weight. Our nutrition and exercise regimen are simple and effective. Obtaining a healthy weight reduces the risk for many diseases,” explains Mary. We utilize GLP1’s like semaglutide and tirzepatide along with peptides to increase metabolism and muscle mass which is monitored with our Inbody scale. Many patients that do our HRT and weight loss program report feeling like they are in their 20s again. Encompass Wellness offers many services like primary care, laser treatments with hair removal, BBL Heroic, ClearSilk, ClearV, and SkinTyte. Botox, filler, IV hydration and more. “Our ultimate goal is to keep patients feeling and looking their best no matter their age.”

hen you think of fall, you visualize cozy sweaters, crunching leaves, crisp morning air, and the scents of cinnamon and pumpkin. You think of evenings spent sipping hot apple cider with friends and family while sitting by the last bonfire of the season. When you think of fall, you think of everyone’s favorite coffee flavors returning for the season. Whether ‘pumpkin spice everything’ is your go-to fall flavor, or you prefer the taste of cinnamon and spices, there are always new flavor combinations making their debut on coffee shop menus. So, be bold this fall, venture outside your coffee comfort zone, and try some of the hottest flavor trends this season.
PUMPKIN SPICE
A staple for fall, pumpkin spice has a tight hold on the world. This fall flavor is a perfect blend of sweet and spiced, and it is so versatile. Whether you prefer to drink your coffee hot or iced, pumpkin spice can do it all. Try substituting whole milk with oat milk for a rich and creamier latte, or add pumpkin spice cream or foam over your cold brew. Even if you are not a coffee lover, try a little pumpkin spice in a chai tea latte to get your fall flavor fix!
APPLE
Thinking of coffee flavors - your mind probably doesn’t automatically jump to fruit flavors. However, apple flavor is making its mark on the coffee world. While not as versatile as pumpkin spice, apple flavors pop in iced lattes, especially when paired with cream or oat milk. If you want to try something completely different, go after an iced apple macchiato and pair it with a caramel or cinnamon flavor.
TOASTED MARSHMALLOW
If you are looking for a sweet and sometimes smokey twist to your regular vanilla coffee, you may want to try toasted marshmallow syrup in your drink. This flavor is like its namesake - warm. As a latte, splashed in regular coffee, or even in a mocha, toasted marshmallow gives a rich vanilla and caramel flavor profile that will leave you hooked and wanting more!
Pumpkin spice, apple, and toasted marshmallow are great flavors, but the autumn fun doesn’t stop there! Other flavors like butterscotch, maple, and hazelnut are great additions to your fall favorites. Whether you love treating yourself to a local craft coffee or making something new at home, there are always new and exciting ways to enjoy your favorite fall coffee flavors. n
LIVING
in the Heart of Sioux Falls
Marti and Ingrid Thompson fall in love with minimalist loft living
Story and photos by Margaret Pennock
After living in suburban Sioux Falls for most of her adult life, Marti Thompson took a leap of faith, cleaned house, and moved downtown with her teenage daughter Ingrid and their two cats, Charlie and Pearl. On a unique twist of faith, in January of 2024, Marti inquired about a two-bedroom, 2,000-square-foot loft apartment in the Harvester Building after seeing a post on Facebook. Marti remembers, “Within about 24 hours I had viewed the property and committed to moving in. The timing was perfect because they had just been notified that my unit would be available exactly when I was ready to move. It’s so rare that a unit becomes available as many tenants have been here for several years, so part of me thinks this space was meant for me and ready at exactly the right time.”
In downsizing from a large single-family home, the process of streamlining her belongings wasn’t a difficult task for Marti. As a self-professed pragmatic and analytical person, she values function over form but likes to find style and beauty in pieces that serve an everyday purpose. Marti says, “If an item or space has function and style, that’s a huge win. One of the pieces on my kitchen counter is a mixer, and it looks great and is also very useful. I also have a vase with lemons on the counter. Again, it looks nice but it’s also useful. I don’t have lamps or decor simply for their aesthetic - all serve a purpose or have special meaning.” She continues, “Also, styles change, and while I appreciate evolving styles, I don’t have the time or energy to keep up with the latest styles and trends.”
Marti, Patricia and Ingrid
Enlisting the assistance of her friend Patricia Thoms, an interior designer from Montgomery’s, Marti and Ingrid created the perfect environment for themselves and their two feline companions with simple yet stunning pieces. Capitalizing on the historical charm of the building’s original hardwood floors, rustic brick walls, soaring 12-foot ceilings, immense original beams, and massive windows that flood the apartment with natural light, the apartment is a soothing oasis for both mother and daughter. “It has been a wonderful journey working with a trusted friend and professional who took the time to get to know me and selected items that reflect my personality and the overall aesthetic of the home I wanted to create,” says Marti.
Their kitchen, dining room, and living room spaces flow directly into each other with an open concept that Marti appreciates in its gorgeous simplicity. By painting the kitchen cabinets black and adding a simple but stunning backsplash they developed a beautiful backdrop for the combined space. Marti shares, “I’ve always been intrigued by the history of the Harvester Building. The Gourley’s did a great job renovating it into functional living and work spaces while maintaining the integrity and historical nature of the building. I love the exposed brick walls, wood floors, and high ceilings! The super thick original beams are also really cool.”
Patricia notes, “The brick walls and the beams are gorgeous, so I designed the space to be open, clean, and very spacious. It is extremely beautiful with the high ceilings and the design centers around complimenting it. Helping people create a beautiful space where they love to live is my goal, and we achieved that here.”

OFF EVERY
Offer ends 10/31/24
Marti and Ingrid both have oversized bedrooms flooded with gorgeous light that opens to enviable views of downtown. True to her preference for minimalism, the spacious rooms have necessary and beautiful furnishings with zero clutter. Marti shares, “I think minimalism manifests peace. To me, excess things take up both physical and mental space and drain me of my energy. It’s been liberating to get rid of ‘things’ that have been in storage or that no longer serve a purpose. It’s like a mental and physical weight being lifted!”
An item that is especially important to Marti is a special piece of artwork that adorns the wall in her bedroom. Marti shares, “I like to surround myself with meaningful objects, like the one piece of art in my bedroom, a reproduction of Emily Groth’s Chakras. Sadly, Emily lost her life to a fentanyl overdose - she was an incredibly talented artist. To me, the piece is beautiful, represents a talented soul lost too soon, and reminds me of the strength and courage her mom, my friend Angela, has to prevent others from losing their lives in a similar way. All the pieces in my home have meaning and a story. I think it’s finished for now but I do want to begin collecting pieces that were manufactured around the time this building was constructed.”
Not a fan of yard work or snow removal, Marti and Ingrid enjoy the freedom associated with their home while loving living in the heart of the city. She notes, “Both Ingrid and I love the diversity of the downtown community. She enjoys observing and interacting with people of other cultural backgrounds in our building and the neighborhood.”
Located just a few blocks from the new Steel District, Marti is excited for the venue to be fully operational. “My office is moving to the Steel District soon and I’m really excited to be able to walk to work. I love the shops that have opened so far and can’t wait for the rest of the shops to move in. The restaurants will be fabulous! I can’t wait to spend time relaxing in the outdoor spaces that are being constructed.”
For Marti, the move and transition to downtown living has been a welcome change for her and Ingrid. “Our prior neighborhoods were great and perfect for Ingrid’s younger years. Now that we’re downtown and accustomed to a variety of neighbors, activities, shopping, and events, I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to leave.” n
Prioritize Your Hearing Health
By Margaret Pennock

Like annual physicals, hearing screenings are essential as you age to maintain clear hearing and fully enjoy life.
As we age, it’s easy to overlook symptoms indicating that your hearing might not be as sharp as it once was. Unfortunately, hearing loss can lead to isolation, loneliness, and frustration. Recent studies suggest it may also increase the risk of dementia and cognitive decline.
Unlike more visible physical issues, hearing loss often occurs gradually, making it hard to detect. You might find yourself adjusting your lifestyle to compensate—struggling to hear the television or the server at a restaurant or needing to turn up the volume on your cellphone. Audiologist Holly Ralston at Midwest ENT & Allergy explains, “Because hearing loss can be very gradual, it’s difficult to know what you’re missing. We frequently see people with moderate to severe hearing loss by the time they come to us for the first time.” She continues, “It’s wise to schedule hearing tests annually once you turn 50, just like you would with other health screenings. These tests help establish a baseline so that any future changes can be addressed promptly.”
If hearing loss does become a concern, it can be managed with innovative technology. Ralston notes, “We want to understand your needs and goals for better hearing and determine the best treatment options. We work with a range of technologies, levels, and budgets. Our full staff of physicians and advanced practice providers collaborate closely to ensure seamless care for our patients.”
A particularly exciting new technology available exclusively at Midwest ENT & Allergy in Sioux Falls is Earlens, which is placed directly on the eardrum. It offers a rich, natural sound and is
completely hidden from sight, unlike traditional hearing aids. Dr. Kenneth Scott, an Otologist who trained with the inventor of Earlens technology, emphasizes, “There have been significant advancements in hearing technology over the past few years, and it is a good idea to be checked as there are several hearing device options that may be right for you.”
Ralston adds, “We aim to find the best solution for your hearing loss and lifestyle, whether through a traditional acoustic hearing aid, Earlens, or a cochlear implant. Treatment is tailored to each individual. Our team is dedicated to providing the best care and options for each patient’s needs.”
If you’re concerned about your hearing, call Midwest ENT & Allergy at 605-336-3503 to schedule a hearing test and consultation. n
“Hearing connects us to our outside world. That’s how we stay connected over the phone, in person, and via FaceTime. A very mild hearing loss can significantly impact your life. Our team is ready to help find the best solution and improve your quality of life.”

Keeping Your Pets Safe During Cold Weather
By Dr. Amanda Zanger
As the days grow shorter, you may find yourself taking more evening walks in the dark. For our pets that venture outdoors or live outside permanently, it is my opinion that owners should be equipped with the proper tools to keep them safe for the upcoming winter season.
Has your pet had their preventive care exam (wellness exam)? Some medical conditions like arthritis can worsen with colder weather. It is a good idea to bring them to your primary veterinarian to get checked out to make sure they are healthy for the cold weather.
If you find yourself on those dark evening strolls, ensure you and your pet are visible by wearing reflecting gear or light-up accessories. Dressing to impress is not only for us. Layering up is essential to maintaining your pet’s body temperature, and sweaters or jackets can also benefit pets that like to go outside or livestock that live outside. Waterrepellent gear can protect them during harsh rain or snow - ensure that it covers their belly for optimal comfort.
With winter comes ice, salt, or snow. Using a paw balm to protect paw pads against
snow, ice, or salt is a great option. Dog booties can also keep feet warm and dry and protect from irritation. A good rule of thumb is to check your paws when you walk outside for signs of cold-weather injury (cracked or bleeding paws). Avoiding ice is a good idea when walking, especially frozen ponds, lakes, or other bodies of water. It is unpredictable if the ice can support you or your pet’s weight.
Feeding your pet the proper amount of nutrition is a struggle to balance as our indoor pets usually stay inside and do not get as much exercise as they would in warmer seasons. Obesity can cause a variety of harmful diseases to your petssuch as diabetes, arthritis, hypertension, kidney disease, etc. However, outdoor pets will require more calories in the winter to generate enough body heat and energy to keep them warm. Please consult your veterinarian to ensure your pet gets the proper calories to sustain a healthy lifestyle.
Always provide shelter for your outdoor animals. Ensure they have unlimited access to fresh, non-frozen water; shelter to protect from the wind; and clean, thick bedding to provide a warm, dry environment. Lastly, be prepared. We never know when disaster will strike (severe winter weather, blizzards, power outages). An emergency kit including your pet in your plans is vital to keep everyone safe. Ensure you have enough food, water, and medication to last at least seven days.
I hope you and your pets are happy and safe this winter season! n

LilyMeet Frank
Women’s health advocate and entrepreneur
By Jill Funke

In observance of Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month (October), we are happy to highlight medical service pioneer Lily Frank.
The essence of entrepreneurship is anticipating and recognizing market demand, then combining innovation and skills to create a product or service that creates value for a target audience. Lily Frank is an excellent example of an advocate with a gift for entrepreneurship. She marries a passion for women’s healthcare with her quest to bring unique services to women in Sioux City and Sioux Falls.
Lily moved from California to live with her father in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, in late elementary school. Remembering the TLC show Baby Story, she recalls, “Watching all those babies being born, I knew I wanted to surround myself with pregnant women so that I could help them with their deliveries.” In high school, she played golf and was a dance team member. At the end of her senior year in high school, Lily was awarded a scholarship to St. Luke’s College in Sioux City, Iowa. She completed her RN Degree at age twenty and was drawn to hard-to-find labor and delivery positions. Lily began as a med. surg. nurse to utilize her education and training. She quickly transitioned to the ICU, where she spent the next two years before accepting a position as a travel nurse in different states. During a summer between travel contracts, Lily visited the Sioux City area and learned of an opening in labor and delivery. Having always longed to work in that area, she admits, “I said to myself, I really don’t want to leave right now. I should take this chance before it’s gone.”
RESPONDING TO A CALLING
Working in labor and delivery, Lily began to long for the chance to deliver instead of assist with births. She explains that preparing for this new role would be a commitment, “I needed additional education to advance my degree.” Her first goal was to complete her bachelor’s degree, which she quickly did, and she immediately began applying to master’s programs across the country. She was accepted into the Certified Nurse Midwife program at the University of Cincinnati. She was very excited at the potential to provide a full array of women’s health services, including: contraceptives, childbirth, postpartum, and additional women’s health services.
While working toward her degree, Lily became pregnant with her first child, Lux, who is now three years old. She remembers, “Part of my training was a clinical rotation that gave me access to an ultrasound machine, which I used every chance I could.” Checking in on her developing baby, Lily started to think in the back of her mind about ultrasound work and how she could incorporate it with her degree. “As much as I enjoyed watching Lux grow, I realized that many other women might want the same experience, and perhaps I could create that type of a service for them.”

Lux arrived two weeks before Lily completed her ARNPCNM degree. “With a newborn at home, I studied for and passed my certified nurse midwife boards.” She attempted to start a midwife program at St. Luke’s, but a sudden change in leadership put a damper on that plan. During that timeframe, the unexpected death of her father was an unfortunate and traumatic experience, yet Lily spurred into action. “My dad’s passing created momentum and drive for me to find better ways to utilize my knowledge, skills, and passion, and I wanted to make him proud.” That summer, she went to Monterrey, California, to gain a sonography certification through a course for midwives.
With grief still motivating her to bring something positive into the world, Lily opened The Sonography Studio in August of 2022. “Having been pregnant myself, I knew that other women would like to be able to connect with their unborn babies like I had.” The first location was very small, providing an ultrasound area and an IV room for hydration. Even though she knew that other expectant moms would be interested in her services, Lily was surprised that the demand grew so quickly, yet this also validated her dream as she watched so many moms embrace the chance to peek at their developing child. Doing whatever she can to help support them through this process helps give her the drive she needs to continue and grow the business. Lily adds, “We have had four generations in the room before. It is so fun to have more than just mom in to see the baby; a lot of bonding can happen before the baby is even here with dad, siblings, and grandparents!” Since the beginning of the business, The Sonography Studio has relocated to a larger building and added services and a boutique to make it an all-in-one pregnancy, postpartum, and women’s wellness studio. Lily’s efforts to help women with issues they aren’t always comfortable discussing with others and often struggle to find services for has become increasingly popular. This upholds her mission to empower women to advocate for all aspects of their healthcare, as she says, “I want to normalize talking about women’s issues.” Crossing the state border into South Dakota, Lily opened a second location in Sioux Falls to serve the women from the area who were driving to Sioux City.
EMBRACING
IT ALL
Lily is a Whispering Creek Golf Course member, participating in a ladies’ golf league and couples’ tournaments with her fiancé, Mitchell. In April, the family welcomed a second son, Roe. They enjoy their time with each other, cruising around the neighborhood in their golf cart, grilling at home, or eating Mexican food. Lily laughs when she says, “I ate Mexican food for lunch four or five times a week when I was pregnant with Roe.” At least twice a year, the young family decides to get away from the area for a trip to their family condo in Florida. The family is quite active, as Lily says, “We are always on the go! You won’t find us inside much unless the temperature is minus 20 or it’s bedtime.” Transitioning
to motherhood was a journey she says has been the hardest and easiest thing she has ever experienced. While every day can be challenging, Lily counters, “This is my favorite challenge as it encourages me daily to be the best person I can be for my boys. They will only have one childhood; I want it to be one they look back on and adore.”
Chasing your dreams often requires a support system. Lily is grateful that Mitchell always pushes her to go after her goals, and she is thankful for the help and support of her mother. Yet, as she looks back, she credits her father, Keith, for her motivation and her ‘why,’ as she says, “My dad owned Frank’s Asphalt. Growing up, he instilled a lot of knowledge and a sense of responsibility in me as I watched him make a living as a business owner.” Lily continues to strive to make him proud and is inspired by her children to provide the best childhood and education they want and deserve. Her advice to other future entrepreneurs is that there is never a perfect time to start anything in life. She advises, “If you are wondering if now is the right time to do something, the answer is yes! Be decisive, don’t fear big decisions, and learn to take risks. You will never know if you will be successful unless you try!” n
From a Calling to a Career:
Angela Gulbranson celebrates 20 years at Visions Eye Care
Story and photos courtesy of Visions Eye Care
As a middle schooler, Angela Gulbranson discovered her life’s calling after a visit to the eye doctor.
“I remember getting my first pair of glasses,” said Gulbranson. “I was amazed at how much I had been missing after someone corrected my vision so I could see more clearly.”
Today, Angela Gulbranson goes by Dr. Angela Gulbranson, and she is celebrating 20 years as owner of Visions Eye Care + Therapy Center in Sioux Falls, returning the favor by helping others see the world more clearly.
When she walks through the door under the familiar Visions sign, she reflects on her early days being full of hope and ambition. Yet at the time, she could not foresee the deep, personal connections she would make over the years.
At first, her focus was on perfecting her craft – prescribing glasses, diagnosing eye conditions, and restoring clear vision. But over time, her role evolved into something more. She had become a trusted confidante and a comforting presence in her patients’ lives.
“I remember my first patient like it was yesterday,” Gulbranson said. “I was scared, excited, and hopeful. It was surreal, but I was proud that I had done it. Looking back at the handwritten ledger showing my first week’s appointments, it’s humbling to know many of those same patients are still with me today.”
Caring for generations of families has been the most meaningful part of her work. “I wanted Visions to be more than a place to get glasses or contacts,” she said. “I wanted it to be a place where people felt truly cared for. Our philosophy is that there’s a person behind the prescription. I’ve celebrated births, watched children go off to college, and shared many life moments with patients. That’s the best part of what I do.”
One of her greatest rewards comes from the Therapy Center. “Vision Therapy changes lives,” she said. “One example is a patient who dreamed of becoming a pilot but couldn’t qualify due to his vision. Therapy made his dream possible.”
Gulbranson credits her success to hard work and her dedicated team. “I’m grateful for my colleagues Drs. Hupke, Gentrup, and DeJongh, and the incredible staff who support us. And I can’t say enough about our patients who trust us with their care.”
What began as a childhood calling has blossomed into a deeply fulfilling career. Though not one for accolades, Gulbranson feels pride in the difference she has made in others’ lives. As she looks ahead to the next 20 years, she’s confident Visions will continue to be a place where people come for clarity – both in their eyesight and in their lives. That’s certainly something worth celebrating. n
What’s New: Style Everlasting
This entrepreneur says you don’t need new clothes. You need a stylist.
By Virginia Olson | Photos by Kami Wess
Chances are you aren’t wearing most of the items that you own. According to Rent the Runway, the average American purchases around 68 pieces of clothing annually but wears just 20% of their clothes 80% of the time. A Wall Street Journal report revealed that 65% of people admit they have unworn garments that still have the tags. Research at the University of Manchester suggests that 6% of purchased clothing items are worn less than once.
Statistics tell the story. “People want to look and feel great but struggle to put outfits together that will accomplish that,” says Stacey Serfling.
Seeing the need to help remedy this clothing dilemma, Stacey founded Style Everlasting. As a personal stylist and consultant, Stacey allows people to shop and find treasures in their closets.
“My professional background is in retail management and corporate sales,” she said. “But I made a change when I wanted to find a role that provided time and flexibility around my family’s needs. My entrepreneurial journey began as an independent stylist for a women’s clothing brand. I quickly realized I could help more women by teaching them how to manage their existing wardrobes. With that intention, Style Everlasting was formed in March 2023 and began serving clients in December 2023.”
Style Everlasting’s primary service is what Stacey calls a “Closet Cleanse.”
“A Closet Cleanse makes room for more style by clearing the clutter and curating a dream wardrobe. It involves assessing buying habits and prioritizing space. Together, my client and I convert her closet into an exclusive boutique built just for her."
“My services allow clients to streamline their wardrobes, simplify and refresh garments, declutter and define personal style, repurpose existing pieces by creating new outfits, and dress confidently for the woman you need to be today.”
Stacey believes there is a need to help individuals learn how to edit their wardrobes - figure out their fashion basics - get organized, learn how to steer clear of flash-in-the-pan trends - and eventually learn how to pinpoint and project a personal style.
Style Everlasting services help manage a wardrobe and a lot more. Stacey also provides styling services for occasions such as family photography, personal style audits, image consultation, and workshops on dressing for your individual style brand and workplace dress codes.
“Style Everlasting provides wardrobe services for the everyday woman,” says the self-described retail dropout, style coach, wardrobe whisperer, and confidence cultivator.
“I am driven to empower women to be the best-dressed version of themselves so that they arrive with confidence to fulfill their purpose.”

The holidays provide a perfect opportunity to truly assess how your mom manages her home life. Beyond the festive gatherings, make time for a closer look at her living environment.
