Sioux Falls’ downtown scene is transforming! Vibrant murals and journeyed sculptures adorn iconic Phillips Avenue, and on the avenue’s north end, a budding art district thrives. It is home to galleries like Rehfeld’s Modern Fine Art and Framing.

Rehfeld’s isn’t just for art aficionados; it welcomes everyone. Owner Lindsey McCann emphasizes the gallery’s role in supporting local artists, showcasing their work, and fostering community connections:

• Aside from the economic benefits of keeping things local, art galleries like Rehfeld’s benefit the community by hosting compelling exhibitions, artist receptions, workshops, and assisting local artists. The artists we collaborate with are proud to represent their art as part of a community. They rely on local galleries to showcase their art, convey their stories, and enable them to continue to create.

• The goal at Rehfeld’s is to elevate the gallery experience and create a space where art can be enjoyed, shared, and understood. “Often folks may be intimidated to enter an art gallery because they don’t understand art. We want to break down the walls between viewer and artist. Art can and should be approachable,” shares Lindsey. “As a member of the art community, we are excited to continue to build relationships with local businesses and other art galleries to further enrich the community. There is so much going on in our neighborhood - we are excited to be a part of it.”

• Stepping into Rehfeld’s, you’ll discover a diverse collection of paintings, sculptures, and ceramics. Seeking a conversation starter - Rehfeld’s offer consultations, delivery, and installation. With new artists and exhibitions scheduled, now is the perfect time to immerse yourself in the downtown art scene’s electrifying energy.

So, whether you’re a seasoned art lover or simply curious, explore Rehfeld’s and contribute to the vibrant artistic tapestry of Sioux Falls.

“For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord.

Keep your cash for the good stuff by saving serious money at the pump

Summer’s just around the corner, and that means it’s road trip season! Knowing that gasoline prices have been all over the board for the past year, it makes sense to understand what you’re putting in your tank and how to fill up most cost-effectively. However, when you pull up to the pumps it isn’t always easy to understand what to put in your tank. Pair that with the fact that every gas station can carry and label gas varieties differently, it can be uber confusing!

To clear things up, here are the details on the different types of fuel you may come across at the pumps in South Dakota and across the nation.

14 April/May 2024

UNL 87 WITH BIOETHANOL

This is a fuel blend of gasoline and 10% bioethanol with an octane rating of 87. This is typically one of the most affordable fuels at the pump. The majority of gasoline sold in the U.S. has at least 10% bioethanol in it.

UNL 88, ALSO KNOWN AS E15

This is a high-octane, high-power fuel blend of gasoline with up to 15% bioethanol. Approved for the majority of cars built after 2001, it has an octane rating of 88. This is typically more affordable than UNL 87 with bioethanol.

UNL 87

This is straight gasoline with an octane rating of 87. It is typically priced mid-level between ethanol blends and premium gasoline. It has an octane rating of 87 and is approved for the majority of cars on the road.

PREMIUM, ALSO KNOWN AS UNL 91

This is straight gasoline with an octane rating of 91. It is generally the most expensive choice at the pump and is approved for the majority of cars on the road, but it’s typically unnecessary unless you drive a high performance vehicle that requires higher octane.

E85

A fuel blend of gasoline and up to about 85% bioethanol, approved for flexfuel vehicles only - check to see if your gas cap is yellow or if you have a flexfuel label on the fuel door. Vehicles are typically labeled E85, FFV, or Flex Fuel somewhere on the body. E85 is generally the lowest-priced fuel at the pump but you shouldn’t use this unless you have a flex-fuel vehicle.

SiouxFallsWoman.net 15 TheFriendlyFuel.com Fill up ON FRIENDLY FUEL UNLEADED 88 • UNLEADED 87

MOST UNIVERSAL CHOICES ACROSS THE BOARD

The vast majority of vehicles can utilize these fuels with no problem:

UNL 87 with Bioethanol

UNL 88 with Bioethanol

UNL 87

DO THE MATH

If you pay 75¢ less per gallon for either UNL 88 (E15) or UNL 87 (E10) versus mid-grade straight gasoline, you will save $7.50 for every 10 gallons of gas you pump! And because bioethanol is American-made fuel derived from corn grown right here in South Dakota you’re also helping the local economy thrive.

HAVE MILEAGE CONCERNS?

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, UNL 88 (E15) ‘showed no statistically significant loss of vehicle performance (emissions, fuel economy, and maintenance issues) attributable to the use of UNL 88 compared to straight gasoline’. POET, the world’s largest producer of bioethanol, states that UNL 88 and UNL 75 with bioethanol share a nearly identical fuel economy. What does all this mean? Your car will go just as far with bioethanol but much more cost effectively!

PACK UP, FILL UP, AND GET GOING!

Now that you understand what is up at the pumps, you can save some easy money with this knowledge by making the best choice for yourself and your vehicle. All you have to do is get your trip planned and your car packed for your summer road trip adventure. Check out these super helpful apps to help you save even more! n

Elegant & Chic

Swim & sportswear for 2024

wimwear and sportswear are taking on similar trends as we dive into the 2024 spring and summer seasons. For the last couple of years, fashions have leaned toward bright and bold looks of beauty - this year, take a step back in time and admire some classics in both swimsuits and athletic wear.

For swimwear, let’s go for a classy vintage chic: think Marilyn Monroe, the early to mid 1900s, sophisticated high waists, stripes, monochrome, and polka dots. Instead of fine lines and details, we’re seeing large prints and blocks of white on a black or navy base, with possibly some ruffles for extra fun. This year’s suits mimic anything you would catch on a 50’s poster of Hollywood’s most glamorous ladies.

Athleticwear is continuing in form with athleisure, which is looking less like a trend and more like a staple due to its comfort and easy day-to-day look. Like swimwear, we’re looking at a large selection of subdued colors and monochromes - black is beautiful in its classic elegance. Yoga pants, high waistlines, and halter tops layered with soft jackets and sweaters say “Hello 24’.”

When selecting your swim and sportswear this season, make it comfortable, fun, elegant, and classy. You’ll be sure to turn heads at the pool, gym, or anywhere in-between! n

For Smooth and Easy Travel:

Upgrade your packing techniques

On a personal level, I’ve never understood people who can pack perfectly with just the right amount of clothing options to have an enjoyable vacation. Over time, I have worked hard to perfect my methods of packing. I can’t just pick a few outfits specifically for each day. I prefer multiple essentials and basics for mixing, matching, and layering. This method leaves me with options, although it has never solved my over-packing issue. If you’re like me, it’s high time we upgrade our packing techniques for a smoother, more enjoyable vacation!

Starting with the most organized method, something that recently came across my radar is using PACKING CUBES. Perhaps this innovation shouldn’t be too surprising, as at-home storage materials often have dividers and smaller boxes for enclosing and organizing items, so why not do it with your suitcase? Using packing cubes works best if you pack them categorically. This method may differ from person to person, but categories might include tops, bottoms, undergarments, shoes, and toiletries— even separate ones for dirty or worn items. If you’re traveling with family, consider a cube or two designated for each family member—especially if you have kids. Most importantly, avoid over-stuffing or using too many cubes. Figure out what items don’t need cubes, such as curling irons or straighteners, to best organize the packed cubes in your suitcase.

A CLASSIC

TECHNIQUE

IS ROLLING. Rolling your clothes allows you to compress them in a way that frees up additional space in your suitcase or travel bag. You can also use this technique for packing clothes in cubes to help with space there. Be mindful of the items you bring that you choose to roll, as some fabrics may crease! Otherwise, the rolling method is fast and very efficient.

FINALLY - LAYERING. Layering is less about physical packing and more about effectively choosing the items you’re bringing with you to wear so you can travel as lightly as possible. Picking items you can wear more than once (jackets, cardigans) and a set number of basics frees up space in your luggage and allows you freedom for day-by-day outfit mix-and-matching. Be sure that your base layers are breathable fabrics (like cotton) to ensure the safety and comfort of your skin and the rest of your body. Especially if your travel might include inclement weather or lots of outdoor time, ensure you have something warm (fleece or wool) and a waterproof outer shell. Additionally, wrinkle-free fabrics will be your best friends for multiple days of wear!

Traveling should be fun and vacations should be relaxing. Using any of these techniques, whether separate or together, will allow you to efficiently pack what you need to have an enjoyable time on the road or across the sea. Do yourself a favor and upgrade to smooth and easy packing techniques! n

I never pictured myself starting over at 42 years old, but in the words of the great Jim Rohn, “Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.”

In 2022, after seventeen years in the financial industry, I found myself at a crossroads. I spent a full year reflecting on my life, my career, and the financial industry as a whole.

I became a financial planner because I love numbers and strategy, but it was my love for my clients that convinced me that I would never leave this career.

When I decided to open my own practice in 2023, I knew that I would do things differently than most traditional firms. I had to align Impact Wealth Management with my own personal values. Our fee structure had to be transparent and fair. To ensure the highest level of service, I would have to limit the number of clients I would take on. And that’s exactly what we’ve done. We have built an extraordinary team of professionals who are all committed to the Impact philosophy. Give us a call and experience the difference.

MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS

Take one fresh and tender kiss

Add some love, we cannot miss

One girl, one boy, some grief, some joy

Memories are made of this

Don’t forget a small moonbeam

Hold it lightly with a dream

Your lips and mine, two sips of wine

Memories are made of this

Then add the wedding bells

One house where lovers dwell

Three little kids for the flavor

Stir carefully through the days

See how the flavor stays

These are the dreams that you will savor

With His blessings from above

Serve it generously with love

One Man, one Wife, one love, through life

OBOK CONSULTING

Colaborating, Advising, and Empowering Companies for Success

FOR MOST BUSINESSES, growth is considered a positive outcome. The Obok Consulting team knows that growth results from a carefully honed strategy. In a world where success is measured by adaptability and resilience, having the right team of consultants can make all the difference. Companies who trust the Obok team to propel their business forward find that they reveal the limitless possibilities that lie ahead.

CEO Alison Hulshof and her team see the entrepreneurial spirit of great companies. “My two favorite activities are helping businesses navigate all aspects associated with their growth and helping companies develop succession plans to experience a seamless and successful transition.” Yet, the journey to success can be challenging. According to Alison, “Sometimes companies grow themselves right out of business.” Owners and managers often need more training and experience to tackle strategy and management functions. Alison says, “We don’t expect an accountant to be able to remove an appendix surgically. Why would we expect a surgeon to handle the accounting functions for their surgical practice?”

Obok bridges that gap with an unwavering commitment to its client’s success. They transcend the work of consulting by becoming partners who invest in their clients’ growth journey. Obok’s comprehensive services are provided in a collaborative approach that fosters a culture of learning and empowerment, where teams are emboldened to unlock their full potential and achieve remarkable results. “Many of our clients provide exceptional services to their customers and patients. That is their calling.” Budding startups or seasoned enterprises are equally welcomed aboard as the Obok team guides them through every stage of their business’s evolution. With this guidance, companies not only navigate obstacles but also unearth new opportunities for innovation and expansion.

ADVERTORIAL

Alison and her team often tell clients, “You already know what you must do. Let’s identify and address the obstacles or barriers before you.” By putting clients in the driver’s seat, she and her team can collaborate to determine where they are, where they want to be, and what issues and ideas keep them up at night. Obok consultants find fulfillment through this process; as Alison says, “We love wrapping ourselves around a client’s company, helping alleviate their stress and supporting them in a way that makes them know that they are not alone in their pursuit of success.”

After walking alongside her clients on their path toward progression or succession, Alison says that the time comes when they have the strategy, staff, and mindset in place to meet their objectives. At that point, the team at Obok is satisfied. They rejoice with their clients; as Alison says, “We know we have been successful when our clients reach the point that they no longer need us to help them lead a thriving business.”

Styling Your Kitchen Island

Easy ways to add personality and beauty to the heart of the home

The kitchen, without a doubt, is one of the most appealing places to gather in your home. It can also be one of the most overlooked areas of opportunity to stamp your individual style by adding functional or whimsical decor.

A kitchen island or peninsula is perhaps the most versatile and hardworking area of a home. It is a meeting space, an eating place, and a prepping station, providing extra storage on top of it all. But as functional as it is, it is also a great place to inject style easily and interchangeably with just a few items you may already have stored away in your cupboards and bookshelves.

FUNCTIONAL ART

Try displaying a large, rustic wooden bowl filled with apples, artichokes, or lemons. If you don’t want to worry about keeping your produce fresh, some great faux fruits and vegetables mimic the real thing incredibly well. This solution adds a little something even if you are a minimalist at heart and want to avoid clutter.

ANTIQUE FINDS

Gather up your cherished family heirlooms and create an interest with a unique display. Old cutting boards, cookbooks, crockery, and candlesticks are perfect pieces to try in addition to more feminine pieces like candy jars and china. Collectors rejoice!

SIMPLE AND CLEAN

A modern vase with simple greenery stems displayed with a few statement pieces creates a stunning impact.

32 April/May 2024 sfw | HOME

Look for long and lovely artificial stems. Or, if you’re fortunate enough to be surrounded by the real thing, cut flowers and clip elegant stems from the foliage in your yard to display.

TRAYSCAPE

A tray is a great way to contain several complimentary items while at the same time making it very easy to move and set elsewhere if you need to use your island to prep or serve dinner. Trays are also a great way to display dinnerware if you are entertaining and want to set up a buffet.

GREEN THUMB

If you love plants and have proper light, nothing beats placing a lovely green plant (or plants) along with a few other natural, organic items paired with them.

The best part of decorating your island is that you can switch it up seasonally (or anytime) if you like to change things frequently. Have fun – be creative - and make your island reflect you! n

Curb Appeal: Choosing the Right Outdoor Plants

Spring is finally here! And if you’re a homeowner, that usually means it’s time for some outdoor projects. Whether you’re aiming to enhance your home’s curb appeal for an upcoming home sale, or creating a cozy backyard oasis to enjoy for years, selecting the perfect plants will make all the difference. From colorful flowers to lush greenery, here’s a quick guide to help you make the best choices for creating an inviting and beautiful outdoor area.

EVALUATE YOUR SPACE

Start by looking at the outdoor area you’re working with and consider factors such as climate, sunlight exposure, soil type, and available space. Some plants, like roses and hydrangeas, prefer full sun, while others, like ferns and hostas, thrive in shady areas. Make note of any existing landscaping features or structures that could impact your plant choices, like trees, fences, or pathways. If you’re short on space, consider vertical gardening or container plants to maximize your greenery.

CHOOSE A VARIETY OF PLANTS

To create visual interest and texture in your outdoor space, opt for various plants with different shapes, sizes, and colors. Mix flowering plants with foliage plants to add depth and dimension to your garden beds or containers. Consider incorporating evergreen plants for structure and year-round interest and annual blooms for bursts of color throughout the year.

THINK ABOUT MAINTENANCE

Before making your final plant selections, think about the level of maintenance you’re willing to commit to. Some plants require regular pruning, watering, and fertilizing, while others are more low-maintenance. If you have a busy

34 April/May 2024

schedule or are new to gardening, choose plants that are easy to care for and don’t require much attention.

CONSULT WITH EXPERTS

If you’re unsure about which plants to choose for your outdoor space, don’t hesitate to seek advice from gardening experts or local nurseries. They can offer valuable insights and recommendations based on your specific needs and preferences. Additionally, they can help you troubleshoot any issues you may encounter regarding pests or diseases.

Selecting the right outdoor plants will greatly enhance the beauty and functionality of your home’s exterior for years to come. With these tips in mind you can create a stunning outdoor oasis that reflects your style and enhances your curb appeal. So, roll up your sleeves, dig in the dirt, and watch your curb appeal grow! n

Lake House

Breathtaking renovation elevates a home on the water to dream home status

Situated on the beachfront of lovely Lake Madison, Elaine has spent the past year renovating the home she has owned for nearly 20 years. Built in the typical fashion of the era, the 3,600 square foot multi-level home had golden oak trim and cabinetry throughout along with cream walls and cream carpet when she first purchased it.

“Over the years, we have painted the interior several times and replaced flooring. We have always had a home where we want family and friends to be at the lake with us,” she shares. However, other than paint and flooring, major renovations didn’t start until last year when Elaine decided she wanted to truly embrace lake living and reinvent her home. “I never have liked the closed floorplan of the house or the small windows, especially for a lake house. So, we decided to do a major remodel about a year ago to create a better flow for lake life in addition to adding more windows! We ended up remodeling almost every area of the house except for two bedrooms.”

SiouxFallsWoman.net 37

Working closely with Ralyn from Kruetzfeldt Construction and Paula from Montgomery’s for both the renovation and design for her new lakeside dream home, Elaine laughs, “I don’t like picking out things… I gave Paula and Ralyn free rein and I love the choices they made.” According to Paula, “We wanted to include unique, natural, and organic materials so that was our style basis. Several of our decisions were based on this. Tiles that looked like a sandy shoreline, pebble floors, beaded light fixtures, and driftwood accents all found a place in our overall scheme. Unique light fixtures, textured carpets as well as the swooping lines of the metal-work all make for an organic design style.”

Elaine’s light and airy home opens into a cozy seating area just off the sleek and luxurious kitchen with seating for seven at a generous island. Previously, the kitchen was sectioned off and separated from the rest of the house, and it literally had no view of the lake.

“We demolished the kitchen and dining area taking out walls and adding windows. We also put much larger decks off of the kitchen so the upper deck will hold three different grills plus give us a large area for eating/lounging. We decided not to add a table to the kitchen area because the island is so large and perfect for our large family. In addition, there is a table on the lake level that will seat eight people, and when it is nice outside, we have tables both on the kitchen deck and the lake-level deck - we have plenty of places to sit and eat during the summer months!”

Paula shared, “We opened the floor plan as much as structurally possible. The open concept kitchen and sitting area are not only beautiful but functional and a fabulous entertaining area.”

A multi-level home, the upper level has a large family room in addition to a guest bedroom along with the primary suite. The home had a typical multi-level layout with a railing that overlooked the main floor. Elaine recalls, “My contractor suggested removing the railing and adding a wall with custom ironwork. At first, I was like ‘Add a wall?’, but when I saw the outcome, especially with the metalwork, it’s almost like a piece of art itself.” In addition to custom metalwork, Paula also insisted on unique and stunning lighting to make a striking statement throughout the home.

As Elaine loves the water, Rayln installed a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows in the primary suite so she could enjoy the amazing view of the lake. “I absolutely love the windows in the master bedroom as it provides an amazing view of the lake. I haven’t put any type of window treatments on the windows yet since the view is breathtaking! I work from home and decided to add a stand-up desk to this room to enjoy overlooking the lake during the day and to see the twinkling stars at night.”

Paula designed the ensuite to be a peaceful and spa-like retreat with a new layout including a walk-in shower. She noted, “The shower has the new trending large format tile and a classic herringbone design accent, complete with a column shower with overhead rain shower head. A new double vanity with beautiful gold accents makes you feel like you are in a luxury hotel suite. The soft painted cabinets, walls, and tile selections are perfect tones for the space.”

The lake level was also completely gutted, swapping a bedroom with a large family room. The windows directly below the primary suite open onto a patio with direct access to the lake. Elaine shares, “This space has been completely transformed to perfectly fit our lake life living. The flow is absolutely amazing. Everyone is able to come on and off the boat and have immediate access to the shaded outside deck and then it’s just one step away to the beautiful indoor bar and hangout area for food, drinks, and easy access to the bathroom. The open layout gives us the space to congregate as friends and family at lake level and not have to go through the entire house.”

Paula designed the lake level in dark, moody colors with a stunning fireplace on a custom, wood-paneled wall in a dark, rich stain reminiscent of an old-world pub that faces a gorgeous bar and plenty of seating in between. The laundry room is conveniently located directly off the living area perfectly situated for wet swimsuits and sandy towels. Elaine notes, “This is a great space for the summer but also for the fall and winter months. We love watching football and playing cards or board games in this space.”

For Elaine, lake living has been a joy that she intends to fully embrace now and in the future. “We love lake life and the memories that brings with it for our family. We have spent many hours tubing, water skiing, wake surfing and just cruising around the lake with our kids, nieces, and nephews. Now we have a new generation of grandkids to enjoy the lake too.”

Paula was excited to be a part of the process. “We had a great time transforming this lake home into a new retreat for Elaine.” n

ARE YOU EXPERIENCING PAIN OR RECOVERING FROM SURGERY AND SEEKING REHABILITATION?

Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital provides the option of physical therapy to support your recovery journey.

FOR 38 YEARS, SIOUX FALLS SPECIALTY HOSPITAL (SFSH) has been at the forefront of healthcare and surgical excellence. With ongoing growth, it has expanded to include additional divisions. In 2014, the addition of a Physical Therapy department ensured patients receive the same exceptional care they have come to expect. The Physical Therapy department is located at 7600 S. Minnesota Ave. on the second floor of the Sioux Falls Urgent Care and WorkFORCE building.

When a muscle is burning or a joint is aching, for example, a common thought is to take a pain reliever, get some rest, and, try some ice and heat. But if the pain continues despite these easy, athome remedies, it might be time to consider physical therapy.

“Our physical therapy department is a small, quiet environment where patients receive personal, one-on-one treatment from a consistent therapist,” said Jenna Bortnem, one of the SFSH’s physical therapists (PT).

Physical therapists are trained to identify biomechanical deficiencies that are either currently leading to the pain or might lead to other problems. From therapeutic exercises and manual therapy with hands to newer techniques, a physical therapist has a range of noninvasive treatment options to address movement issues.

Physical therapy can help strengthen muscles, improve balance and mobility, relieve joint pain, prevent injury, and restore function, stability, and mobility after an injury or surgery.

With Jenna’s eight years of experience, she sees her job as more than just treating a patient.

“Also important is communicating each patient’s progress, including timely updates and shared insights, to the patient’s primary doctor or surgeon. This relaying ensures a seamless integration of expertise with the patient’s overall health plan.”

ADVERTORIAL

One distinct aspect of the PT Division is that patients aren’t just another appointment. Each patient is a priority.

“Our PT Division is comprehensive care. We make sure every patient is heard as an individual,” she said. “Here at SFSH we as PTs can work closely with an internal medicine or family medicine physician in the same clinic location as well as having access to urgent care.”

Through guided exercises and education about how an individual’s body is meant to move, physical therapy aims to make lasting improvements to one’s ability and strength that help to prevent or relieve injuries.

“We want people to know the Physical Therapy Division at SFSH is an excellent choice for care.”

For more information about our physical therapy services, please contact SFSH’s Physical Therapy Division at (605) 444-8649.

Your family deserves the best.

Everything You Need to Know About… ALLERGIES

Many adults and children deal with environmental and food allergies. South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota are some of the most allergenic parts of the country. Dr. Peter Kasznica has been at Midwest ENT & Allergy for over 13 years and is board-certified in the field of otorhinolaryngology and fellowship-trained in otolaryngologic allergies. He took the time to share his knowledge on allergies and how he and the team at Midwest ENT & Allergy can assist in improving your health!

CAN I DEVELOP ALLERGIES AT ANY AGE?

Yes. Allergies develop most often between birth and ten years old because the immune system is changing so much. Developing allergies tends to slow down after that age, but it is still possible. Allergies can change throughout life.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON ALLERGENS?

Most allergens come from pets, especially cats, as well as dust mites, weeds, and grasses. For food allergies, peanuts and tree nuts are the most common allergens.

48 April/May 2024 sfw | HEALTH

CAN YOU OUTGROW FOOD ALLERGIES?

Yes, you can. Between the ages of 8-10 years old, most food allergies (cow’s milk, soy, eggs) for children tend to go away. However, peanut allergies tend to persist as you age, and shellfish allergies can actually get worse as you get older.

HOW DO YOU TEST FOR ALLERGIES?

We test in two ways. The first is through modified quantitative testing (MQT) which is a blend of skin-pricks and intradermal testing. We do small pricks on the back to see if a hive develops. If it does, we know there is an allergy. Then we do intradermal testing on the arm, which allows us to determine how severe the allergy is. The second type of testing is called a radioallergosorbent test (RAST), which is a blood test that measures the amount of circulating antibodies to allergens.

HOW CAN MY ALLERGIES BE TREATED?

Allergies can be treated in three ways: avoidance, medication,

and immunotherapy. If avoidance and medications, such as antihistamines and nasal steroids, don’t relieve symptoms, then immunotherapy can be used, which includes allergy shots or sublingual drops.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO START ALLERGY SHOTS/ DROPS?

Allergy shots or drops should be started in the wintertime when environmental/inhalational allergens are low. As far as age goes, children can begin receiving shots/drops around or before 10 years old.

IF I HAVE A DOG/CAT ALLERGY, IS MY HYPOALLERGENIC DOG/CAT OKAY TO KEEP?

Yes, you can, but there is still a risk even if they are hypoallergenic. If you think you’re allergic to your pet, it’s important to determine whether it’s actually from the pet or from any pollen or mold they may be bringing in on their paws from being outside.

DOES INSURANCE PAY FOR ALLERGY SHOTS AND DROPS?

Insurance does normally cover allergy shots. Allergy sublingual drops are covered more sparingly.

If you are experiencing allergy symptoms, come see the experts at Midwest ENT & Allergy today! n

STRONGER & HEALTHIER YOU:

Unlocking the benefits of weightlifting for women

You have declared this year as your fitness era, and you’re searching for a fitness routine that will help you slay your goals. With so many options available – from cycling to Pilates, barre, and CrossFit, it can be tough to figure out what will work best for you. There’s one exercise that science says should be part of your routine, no matter what: STRENGTH TRAINING.

Maybe you’ve been avoiding strength training because you fear getting bulky or looking too masculine. Fear not! While cardio HIIT can help you trim down your belly fat, pumping iron helps you build muscle, which will also help you burn more calories. That’s because muscles are metabolically active, meaning they torch calories even when you’re not working out. In fact, muscle tissue burns seven to 10 calories per pound daily, while fat only burns two to three. So, strength training is like a secret weapon for weight loss!

And the benefits of sculpting sessions go way beyond just looking good. As you age, strength training becomes even more important, because it outperforms cardio when it comes to exercise for older adults. Why? Because maintaining muscle is more important than fat loss

50 April/May 2024

for keeping your metabolism humming, your balance on point, and your ability to brace yourself against injury. An Obesity study published in 2017 found that weight training, along with a balanced, low-calorie diet, can help you retain the lean muscle you lose through cardio. When you lose weight without strength training, you lose muscle and bone along with fat, which is bad news for your long-term health.

As Larysa DiDio, a certified personal trainer and contributing fitness editor for Prevention, says, “Every decade, starting in your mid-30s, you lose a percentage of muscle, which affects your metabolism, balance, and ability to brace yourself in the event of an injury.” But don’t worry, strength training can help! By building more muscle, you can strengthen your body and protect yourself from injury.

And that’s not all! Strength training is very important for your overall health. It can help you develop good movement patterns and reduce pain. Many adults suffer from chronic back, knee, or shoulder pain. However, strength training can help target underactive muscle groups to support your aching joints and get you moving pain-free. Plus, strength training can help you reduce your risk of developing diabetes and heart disease. In the United States, about 1 in 12 adults have type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women. These two conditions are linked, but strength training can help you fight back. Strength exercise can increase insulin sensitivity, boost your metabolic efficiency, and reduce inflammation in your body.

So, what are you waiting for? Ditch the cardio routine and embrace the weightlifting life! A consistent and welldesigned strength training program is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle for women of all ages, and it becomes even more important as we get older. So grab those weights, build your muscles, and get ready to feel your best! n

FIBROMYALGIA AWARENESS

MAY is Fibromyalgia awareness month. Fibromyalgia is an autoimmune disorder characterized by persistent widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory, and mood issues. This can and does affect all ages. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way the brain and spinal cord process painful and nonpainful signals. Widespread pain is felt throughout your body, but can be worse areas, such as your back or neck. The pain is likely to be continuous, but it can be better or more severe at different times. Fibromyalgia is thought to be triggered by an event that causes physical, emotional, or psychological stress. Examples are a serious injury, such as a car accident, or an infection, such as Epstein-Barr virus or Lyme disease.

At Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic, “your locally-owned, compounding-only, problem solving pharmacy “– we can help Fibromyalgia patients on a journey to relief. We offer treatment for autoimmune disease, and topical pain gels to concentrate on the “trigger” areas. These items do require a prescription by your provider. We have nutritional items that are overthe-counter to relieve symptoms, focus on your immune system health to improve your stress response and conjunctively improve Fibromyalgia.

If you have any questions about compounding or problems that compounding pharmacists can help you with, do not hesitate to contact us.

If you are affected by the Semaglutide or Tirzepatide shortages, we can help.

HEALTH TIPS Pet

Our pets hold a special place in our hearts and within our family. As a veterinarian, it is my responsibility to support your pet’s health and provide wellness advice! This article will give you a few daily tips and tricks to help you support your pet’s health in the vicinity of your own home.

First let’s talk about dental hygiene. Many pets struggle with progressive dental disease because, well, they do not brush their teeth like we do. Dental disease can come in many forms such as: calculus (tartar) build up, gingivitis (inflammation or bleeding of the gumline), fractured teeth, or malocclusions (misalignment of the upper and lower jaw). These diseases can lead to overall periodontal disease which can impact your pet’s overall quality of life by inciting pain and discomfort within the mouth. A few things that I always advise is to provide your pet with daily dental chew treats (careful to watch those extra calories), daily or weekly tooth brushing with a veterinarian approved toothpaste and/or chew toys for our canine companions. Be careful when selecting chew toys because they can actually do more damage than good. Chew toys to avoid are: bones, antlers, tennis balls (these actually wear their teeth down faster), sticks, and nylon chew toys. A good rule of thumb is pick a

52 April/May 2024

toy that is soft, not hard (try whacking your friend or your husband to test it out), not too small to swallow and toys that are durable (i.e. they cannot chew to pieces). Lastly, routine dentals performed under general anesthesia with your primary veterinarian is key to removing tartar, removing diseased teeth or taking dental radiographs. Please consult with your veterinarian for more information to tailor an individual treatment plan!

Secondly I want to bring up coat and fur health. Not one cat or dog is exactly alike and neither is their skin or fur! Some pets struggle with fur matting due to their fur texture and quality. Weekly brushing is vital to preventing mats! The type of brush that you use also matters. For short haired animals I recommend a metal comb with very fine, closely set teeth to remove dead hair from the topcoat and undercoat. For our long-haired animals I recommend using a metal comb with widely spaced teeth. If there are ever any knots close to skin, never, I repeat NEVER, try to cut them with sharp-ended scissors. This can unfortunately lead to accidental cuts that could lead to an emergency visit. Please work away the knots delicately with a detangler spray of your choice and blunt-ended scissors far away from their skin.

Lastly I want to touch on at-home supplements that can go a long way. For our dogs, a supplement you can add to their food is omega-3 fatty acids, or fish oil. Yes, you read that right, fish oil. This supplement can actually strengthen the skin barrier and provide strength and glossiness to their coat. For active dogs that like to go on long runs, joint supplementations that contain hyaluronic acid help nourish and support cartilage in their joints and can help slow or prevent degenerative joint disease (arthritis).

I hope these easy, at-home tips help your fur babies to be happy, healthy and paw-sitive! n

BethJENSEN A "Revised" Life

One woman’s trailblazing journey to achieve balance

These days Beth Jensen loves her free time.

“My free time is a real mix. Bible study. Unmolding some soap bars. Listing some beeswax candles online. Making dinner for the family. Selling two hogs worth of pork. Taking photos and videos of my animals, editing, then loading them onto social media. Creating soap labels. Scheduling a goat yoga session.

Looking into a family vacation spot for spring break.”

“My lifestyle is fun in and of itself,” said the physician. “I love to create, connect and learn. And my day is full of various ways of doing that.”

SO, YOU GLEAN?

What began as a move to an acreage outside of Garretson has gradually evolved as a sustainable lifestyle for Beth, her husband Matt, and their three daughters. The family has found contentment living off the land, growing their own vegetables, and even sharing their lifestyle with others.

Beth has also come to embrace gleaning – an ancient harvest concept. Gleaning is a term that describes a peasant’s practice of gathering leftover crops after a farmer’s field was harvested.

Seen as a tool to fight against food insecurity, gleaning today is gaining urgency.

Over the past decade, it has become a national movement in the United States as 10-12% of households on average don’t have enough to eat, according to Feeding America. In South Dakota, one person out of seven struggles with hunger.

SiouxFallsWoman.net 55 sfw | PROFILES

Beth set out to change things as she and her family started Glean for Good.

Glean for Good has helped to combat this food insecurity by obtaining fresh, healthy food to distribute at charitable organizations like Feeding South Dakota and Fair Market. A practical idea, gleaning is simply collecting excess fresh food from farms, gardens, farmers’ markets, grocers, and restaurants for those who need it.

Sometimes the produce is left in the field or garden.

The Bible instructed farmers to leave the fallen or passed-over produce for the poor to collect. With this Biblical principle in mind of financial fairness among Christians, Beth adopted a motto from 2 Corinthians 8:15 – “Those with abundance have no extra and those with little have enough.”

A LIFE-ALTERING DECISION

But what brings a woman with a ten-year career as a family physician to shift gears for a whole new way of living?

“From 2007 to 2017, I had a thriving medical practice. I was juggling irregular hours and on-call for hospital, ER, and obstetrical needs. It was overwhelming,” Beth explained. “My first two daughters were born in residency and my youngest during my first year out of training. But early on my girls needed me as much, if not more than my work.”

Still, Beth admits there was nothing unusual or special about her circumstances. Like so many other women, she was piling on family and personal commitments as well as work and feeling the stress of it all.

“My husband and I both had demanding jobs which created tension around the simplest of duties. But between being oncall, always having a pregnant mother due to deliver, and having unfinished medical charts to complete at home – I wasn’t my best self. Burnout may be an overused term, but I don’t know any other way to describe how I felt. I struggled to enjoy home or work and felt the need to change my lifestyle significantly."

BETH TOOK CONTROL

“In 2011, we moved to an acreage in Garretson and chose to embrace a farm life with a small garden and three new farm cats.”

The new lifestyle seemed to become an inspiration.

“I started reading new books like The Forest Unseen, Seven, An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess, and Foraging and Feasting. I listened to fascinating TED Talks and podcasts. I also began meeting people who inspired me to use our home for more than family. So little by little, we expanded how much food we grew, how many animals we had, what classes we hosted, and what farm-to-table events we sponsored.”

Beth saw her family farm grow to include goats, donkeys, cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, and ducks. The farm has become a place meant to apply the principle of sustainability and inspire others when it comes to abundance.

Discovery became part of Beth’s journey. She began noticing the glaring abundance of waste as well as the over-abundance of space.

“We mistakenly call our extras garbage and refuse, but we decided to put this abundance to good use. We now use beef suet, which often is a by-product of meat processing to make candles and soaps. Almost 100% of our soap and candle recipes are made from a meat market’s extras.”

Today, Beth also collects discarded lunch scraps from Sioux Falls Christian’s 1500 students and saves them to supplement the Jensen family pigs’ diets.

“This is an incredible saving to our farm, making it more financially sustainable. And the school is also thrilled to see this food spared from the trash bin.”

She notes at the Jensen farm there also was an abundance of space. “We now welcome gatherings here and have hosted dozens of informal farm-to-table dinners, charitable fundraisers, and family reunions. We even host live nativity gatherings. We feed those in attendance from the extras of our garden and those of our neighbors.”

FINDING BALANCE AND FURRY FRIENDSHIPS

A fun side of Beth’s Garretson farm is that it has attracted vinyasa yoga classes. Goat yoga, which began in 2021, is now a regular part of the community at Glean for Good.

“After our neighbors completed their yogi training, they hoped to teach classes but not invest in a whole studio. After being asked

to host goat yoga in our yard, we had to say ‘yes’!” said Beth. “Not only did we have the space and the goats, but we were craving something exactly like this experience to get community here at the farm.”

Beth’s farm now offers outdoor goat yoga classes on Thursday evenings during the summer.

CALL IT A SUSTAINABLE LIFE

Making all these major life changes didn’t happen overnight.

“Little by little, I tapered back my work schedule and expanded my influence at home and in my community. And as much as sustainable farm practices are important to me, even more is a sustainable lifestyle for me and my family.”

Now a family practice physician, Beth says her journey couldn’t have been made without her husband Matt.

“It’s hard to believe, but Matt and I have been married for over 20 years. We remain pretty crazy about each other. He has been an incredible support and friend; I can’t imagine my life without him. We have three beautiful daughters: Libby, 18; Claire, 17; and Muriel, 15. All three attend Sioux Falls Christian High School. I couldn’t be more proud of who they are and how they have become strong in their faith.”

For Beth, balance has given her energy.

“This balance continues to satisfy my desire to explore the world’s complexities and be part of improving others’ lives.” n

Rock Steady Boxing punches back at Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease affects approximately 1 million people in the U.S., and there is currently no cure. Physical symptoms of the condition include tremors, slowed or strained motion, muscle rigidity, poor posture, shuffling gait, and diminished balance. Other losses include reduced cognition, slurred speech, depression, and other emotional changes.

The physical and mental declines associated with Parkinson’s disease are debilitating, yet there is growing evidence that indicates the positive impacts that exercise has on Parkinson’s disease. This evidence led to founding the Rock Steady Boxing program in 2006 in Indiana. Since then, non-contact boxing gyms dedicated to people with Parkinson’s disease have sprung up nationwide. At the Inn on Westport in Sioux Falls, Rock Steady Boxing instructor Lisa Howard leads her boxers through forced-intensity workouts designed to counteract the effects of the condition and delay its progression. She says, “When the boxers walk into our gym, I treat them like athletes, not people with Parkinson’s. Our workouts are not easy, and it’s been so amazing to see all the boxers step up and master our drills, but it’s especially fun to see our lady fighters bring their “A” games and keep up with all the men! They are dealing with this disease with grace and true tenacity!

While boxers do not participate in matches or spar with others, they join in workouts that focus on strength, balance, speed, hand-eye coordination, flexibility, agility, and cognition, which in turn increase their mental focus, reduce their stress levels, and improve their mood and outlook on life. Those who participate in the boxing workouts maintain a better level of function than those who elect to perform other forms of exercise.

60 April/May 2024
sfw | PROFILES

Rock Steady Boxing has helped Terri Schmidt improve her condition since starting in 2019. Nicknamed Triple T for Too Tough Terri, she is most grateful for the less tangible benefits that come from the group association, as she says, “While family can be very supportive because the group has the condition themselves, they have a level of understanding that surpasses those who do not.”

New boxer Petey Koller loves the variety packed into the workouts and she is both delighted and amazed at the physical and psychological benefits she has experienced in her short time with the group. “Movement is medicine. I love it!” She is also grateful for Howard’s enthusiasm and commitment to the group as she exclaims, “Lisa is a class act. She has a gift.”

Lisa exclaims, “It’s been so humbling working with these fighters the past seven years.” On the wall in the dedicated gym where the boxers work out is the phrase “In This Corner – Hope.” The brevity of that last word does not diminish its power, which Rock Steady Boxing fighters and visitors absorb when they gather at the gym. When that much strength becomes concentrated in that one space, Parkinson’s disease is down for the count. n

Jeana Goosmann

A time of celebration as Jeana Goosmann reflects on 15 years of Goosmann Law Firm

Some children grow up in the suburbs, others in the big city, some live in large mansions, and others in small apartment buildings. Jeana Goosmann believes she had the best place of all to grow up – a family farm.

As the CEO and a managing partner of the Goosmann Law Firm, Jeana has come to appreciate the many triumphs and challenges of being raised with agriculture in her roots.

Jeana says, “I grew up a farmer’s daughter, my parents instilled in me the values of hard work and perseverance from an early age - I now believe that nothing can replace the drive and dedication instilled by a strong work ethic.”

For Jeana, that passion has been the true fuel to her success. Having started her law firm in 2009, she now has cause for jubilation. With offices in Omaha, Sioux City, Spirit Lake, and Sioux Falls and 55+ employees, Goosmann Law Firm will be celebrating 15 years on May 11, 2024.

“I started the firm in Sioux City, purchasing a historic building, and then opened the Sioux Falls office in 2013. In 2017, we expanded to Omaha, marking a significant milestone in our growth journey. Most recently, in 2021, we merged with Sackett Law Firm, which is our Spirit Lake location.”

The offices reflect the law firm’s culture of teamwork with collaborative workspaces and bright, innovative design. It also has fresh surprises like a coffee bar to welcome visitors and clients. Red accents are everywhere.

“My priority was to create a firm culture centered around Midwest values, big-city style, hometown service, a team approach, and keeping up with the pace of business. I also brought the RED mentality to my style of leadership. RED – ready, execute, deliver,” she said.

That “Red Philosophy” is also part of Jeana’s bestselling book, Worth It: Business Leaders Ready, Execute, Deliver. “I use this model every day leading the firm and preparing for trial.”

The firm’s area of practice includes business, estates, employment, and trial, focusing on representing CEOs and entrepreneurs, its tagline, “Legal for People who Lead,” carries a big message.

“We are a Midwest-based, certified, woman-owned law firm for trailblazers leading the way in America,” she said. “We work for visionaries who take action. We give leaders the freedom to focus on what’s worth it. We help protect what you work hard for and get what you deserve. As attorneys, we are committed to stand for what is right.”

Because of her entrepreneurial spirit and deft handling of an expanding law practice, Jeana was selected as a 2021 Enterprising Woman of the Year for her leadership of the largest, certified woman-owned law firm in the Midwest.

Jeana Goosmann’s journey from a farmer’s daughter to CEO exemplifies Midwest values. Cheers to Goosmann Law Firm’s remarkable story and the many chapters that lie ahead. n
