Artistic Treasures: Discover Discover

Celebrating women and culture at the South Dakota Art Museum

Nestled in the heart of Brookings on the campus of South Dakota State University, the South Dakota Art Museum is a vibrant hub where creativity, community, and cultural celebration converge. More than just a collection of galleries, this museum embodies a simple but impactful mission: to inspire creativity, connect people, and enrich lives through art.

EXHIBITIONS

This fall, the spotlight shines on women creatives with two captivating showcases:

“Anila Quayyum Agha: Shadows and Splendor” is available for viewing from July 27th through November 3rd and features the Pakistani-American artist’s evocative works. Central to the display is “A Beautiful Despair,” a monumental steel sculpture adorned with intricate patterns inspired by Arabic art. Lit from within, it casts enchanting shadows that transform the gallery into a space of intimacy and wonder. Agha’s mixed media pieces, which integrate traditional women’s crafts like embroidery and beadwork, further underscore her message of inclusivity and beauty.

The second exhibit this fall, “Her Art, Her Story: South Dakota Women Artists (1900-1950)”, is open September 28th through January 18th, 2025, and pays homage to the pioneering female artists who shaped the artistic landscape of South Dakota. From Ada Caldwell, a respected instructor, to Frances Cranmer Greenman, known for her sensitive portraits, the contributions of these women are celebrated through a collection of paintings and artifacts that highlight their talent and influence.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES

Beyond exhibitions, the museum buzzes with activity. Special events like Community Art Day, where locals come together to create and connect, and performances such as the Dallas Chief Eagle September 6th hoop dance add a dynamic flair to the cultural calendar. Coffee with Collections and artist talks provide deeper insights into the artworks, fostering a richer understanding and appreciation of art.

With many engaging activities tailored for children of all ages - everything from hands-on gallery crafts to specially curated family events throughout the year - the museum invites parents to bring their kids and explore the wonders of art together. “People often worry about bringing kids to an art museum, but art is for everyone,” says director Donna Merkt.

Navigating Social Security Benefits

Don’t miss out on thousands

Many Americans find complexities in the Social Security Administration system. The government agency administers retirement, survivor, and family benefits and enrolls individuals in Medicare. Travis Hackett, a licensed insurance agent with Pernell Insurance Agency, fields many questions about social security while assisting clients with their insurance needs. Travis is not surprised that so many have questions, as he explains, “With over 2,000 rules, Social Security is a complicated system.” When people have important questions, such as when they should start drawing Social Security, Travis says there aren’t enough resources available to walk them through their options and the implications of each option. “By law, those working in the Social Security Administration are only allowed to quote the Social Security handbook when taking calls.”

Considering the lack of knowledgeable advisors who can answer questions and walk people through the system, it is not surprising that up to 96% of Americans fail to take advantage of their full Social Security Benefits. Travis finds this discouraging, prompting him to study for and complete the required test to become a Registered Social Security Analyst. He explains the expansion of his current role with Pernell Insurance by saying, “My job is to educate so people can optimize their Social Security benefits.”

When it comes to determining benefits, Travis explains that the top 35 years of wages are utilized. The most common questions he receives are about the timing of retirement and the time to start to draw Social Security. Travis shares a cautionary tale of a woman who started drawing Social Security

at age 62, fearing that the funds would run out or not be available for as long as she needed them. Her husband did the same. However, this decision to collect as soon as they were eligible decreased the amount of survivor benefits she could collect if he passed away. The couple did not realize this and would have made different decisions if they had been aware that survivor benefits would be affected. In addition, the early activation of their Social Security benefits resulted in them losing the ability to claim thousands of dollars, as the benefit amounts increase with delayed usage. This story serves as a stark reminder of the potential loss of benefits due to early activation, urging people to be cautious and fully aware of the implications of their decisions.

Luckily, Travis has software that provides different scenarios for clients to determine the best time for retirement and to draw Social Security. Because they can begin to collect benefits as early as age 62, he says, “Scheduling the date to begin drawing benefits should happen after considering scenarios that factor in the individual’s needs. Those initial conversations should ideally start when the person reaches their late 50’s to early 60’s.” Travis urges people of that age range to start their planning to get the most out of their Social Security benefits while also providing for them throughout the rest of their lives, as he says, “You don’t want to outlive your benefits and have no other option than to return to the workforce during your late golden years.” n

Smart Parenting and Savvy Retirement Planning

s a mother, your dreams for your children likely include happiness, success, and perhaps the joy of raising a family. Your dreams probably don’t include them struggling in dead-end jobs, mired in debt, or living in your basement well into adulthood. If realized, concerns like these can challenge family dynamics and drain your finances – a significant problem if you’re trying to plan for retirement.

Fortunately, there are proactive steps you can take to help set your children up for success while safeguarding your financial future. One such step is investing in their education through a 529 plan or another type of education-funding account. The most common of these plans is the 529 college savings plan.

What is a 529 College Savings Plan?

A 529 College Savings Plan is a tax-advantaged savings plan allowing you to invest your money specifically for education. Funds in a 529 plan can grow tax-free, potentially allowing you to pay for more education at less cost to you.

You establish an account, choose investment options, and contribute funds that can be used for “qualified higher education expenses,” such as tuition, room and board, books, fees, and computers.

Benefits:

• Tax Advantages: Earnings aren’t subject to federal tax. In many cases, they’re exempt from state taxes, too. Funds withdrawn solely to pay for eligible college expenses are completely tax-free.

• Control: As the account holder, you maintain control over the funds, helping ensure they are used for their intended purpose.

• Estate Planning: 529 plans are not counted as part of your estate, so your family won’t owe estate taxes on the account even if you pass away.

• Legacy: By helping fund their education, you’re providing financial support while also emphasizing the importance of education. Seeing that education is important to you can make it important to your children as well.

• Flexibility: There are no age limits. You can invest for both children and adults, so it’s never too late to start saving for education.

Investing in education through a 529 plan isn’t just good parenting, it can also be good retirement planning. Depending on your overall financial plan, it can pave the way for your children’s success while helping ensure your financial stability in the years to come. Start now by consulting with a financial advisor who can help you evaluate a 529 college savings plan as part of your comprehensive financial plan.

We’d be happy to help tailor a plan that aligns with your goals and ensures your loved ones have the educational opportunities they deserve. Call 605-357-8553 or email cfsteam@mycfsgroup.com to schedule a strategy session today.

Or, if you’d simply like more information about the two types of 529 plans, call 605-357-8553 or email cfsteam@mycfsgroup.com.

Earnings in 529 plans are not subject to federal tax, and in most cases, state tax, so long as you use withdrawals for eligible education expenses, such as tuition and room and board. However, if you withdraw money from a 529 plan and do not use it on an eligible education expense, you generally will be subject to income tax and an additional 10% federal tax penalty on earnings. As with other investments, there are generally fees and expenses associated with participation in a 529 plan. There is also a risk that these plans may lose money or not perform well enough to cover college costs as anticipated. Most states offer their own 529 programs, which may provide advantages and benefits exclusively for their residents. Investors should consider, before investing, whether the investor’s or the designated beneficiary’s home state offers any tax or other benefits that are only available for investment in such state’s 529 college savings plan. Such benefits include financial aid, scholarship funds, and protection from creditors. The tax implications can vary significantly from state to state.

Long-established fashion looks are making a fun and dynamic comeback for late summer/ early fall 2024! Fashion is ever-changing, but classic styles have been consistent in trending growth over the last few years. The basics, of course, don’t stray far, so we’ll start there!

The office chic look has been front and center lately, always portraying the best image for the boss babe on the go who gets things done. Blazers and button-ups are staples, reinforcing the trend statement “monotone says serious business.” This look is spiced up by creating a wide silhouette, broad shoulders, and popped collars, giving an air of fun with a breezy, easy-going personality amidst all that business.

What’s old is new works well with two other trends: furs and leopard print. Pile it high with a faux fur scarf or don a fur-lined jacket for the classic, classy appeal. Incorporate your leopard prints in the form of long A-line skirts, formfitting turtlenecks, or paired with a cute blazer to prowl the town.

Also in vogue are 60s-inspired dresses, boots, and even long gloves. It’s refreshing to see a modern twist put on old stylings! Finally, as they’ve been making a comeback, pair anything with a chic heel with a pointed toe, creating an elongated look to make your legs look long and elegant.

The old-is-new trend is fun and quite diverse, lending itself to many opportunities to play with your existing wardrobe and complement your flair. Work with your old pieces and enjoy the fresh new look of your wardrobe this fall. n

Recognize and Combat Hair Thinning

Many would automatically assume hair thinning or loss is a man’s game. However, these hair problems affect women more often than you would think. For those battling through this experience, there are ways to regain the fullness and self-confidence you once had.

There can be subtle hints that your once luscious locks are beginning to thin. It could start with you noticing that your ponytail seems thinner or your hairdresser comments on it. Whatever it may have been - there can be many reasons for thinning hair. Illnesses, inflammation, stress, genetics, pregnancy, aging, poor nutrition, or overuse of heat-damaging products (hair dryers, straighteners, etc.) can all cause hair thinning and loss.

Some common signs that indicate that your hair is thinning are: your hair feels lighter, you start to see more of your scalp, your forehead seems more pronounced, you experience more scalp sunburns, you wake up with more hair on your pillow, your hair doesn’t style like it used to, or you can even see bald patches.

Treatment depends primarily on the underlying causes. When you and your doctor have ruled out the causes noted above, new innovative techniques are available and being tried. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are utilized to provide growth factors to stimulate the regeneration of hair follicles. Also, low-level LED laser lights have been helpful in re-growing hair in some cases. If medical treatment fails you, consider surgical options such as hair transplantation - which involves moving active follicles from the back of the scalp to the thinning areas. A less invasive approach would include hair restoration through hair replacement systems.

Remember, always treat your hair as you would like to be treated, with kindness, care, and proper nutrition! n

Your Bathroom: MODERNIZE

Does your bathroom reflect your current style? Trends evolve, and what was once a luxurious garden tub might now feel bulky and outdated. If you yearn for a more modern and elegant space, a shower conversion can be the perfect solution.

This practical yet stylish option seamlessly blends functionality and aesthetics. Imagine replacing your clunky tub with a sleek walk-in shower, instantly revitalizing your bathroom. Local expert David Peele of Bath Fitter® offers valuable advice on this quick and easy way to transform your space: The Tub-to-Shower Conversion.

The benefits of a shower conversion extend far beyond aesthetics. Many homeowners find that bathtubs, once a symbol of relaxation, have become cumbersome with age. Climbing in and out of tubs can pose safety concerns, and let’s be honest, a long soak isn’t always practical in today’s fast-paced world. A walk-in shower offers a safe and accessible solution, perfect for all ages and abilities.

Moreover, a shower conversion can be surprisingly efficient and hassle-free. Bath Fitter® explained, “The tub-to-shower conversion process is designed to be quick and minimally disruptive. Unlike traditional bathroom remodels that can leave your bathroom unusable for weeks. Tub-to-shower conversion installations can be completed in as little as one day.”

This approach uses high-quality, prefabricated components that require less demolition, ensuring a clean and precise fit. The

The smart and affordable choice of a shower conversion

process involves removing the existing tub and surrounding walls, then installing a sleek, one-piece shower base and seamless wall for a waterproof finish.

This solution isn’t limited to specific tub styles. Whether you’re tired of your current tub/shower combo or find bathing difficult, you can find a design to suit your needs.

The key to a successful conversion lies in expert guidance. Partnering with a reputable company like Bath Fitter® ensures a smooth process from start to finish. Their experienced designers can help you create a customized shower that complements your current bathroom decor while offering valuable advice on functionality and material selection.

If you’re not handy with DIY projects, leave the heavy lifting and technical details to the professionals. Bath Fitter® uses highquality acrylic materials built to last a lifetime and backed by a lifetime warranty. This ensures quality at every step of the process, and peace of mind.

Beyond the time-saving advantage, tub-to-shower conversions offer significant cost savings compared to a full bathroom remodel. You’ll save money on your water bill, increase your bathroom’s functionality, and add value to your home.

Don’t wait years for a bathroom that reflects your style and needs. With their expert guidance, a tub-to-shower conversion from Bath Fitter® can be a quick and rewarding way to modernize your space. n

Greta and Mike May remodel a dream home for their family
Photos and story by Margaret Pennock

Nestled in a sprawling neighborhood in southern Sioux Falls, Greta and Mike May have refreshed their home to reflect their large family’s easygoing and close-knit lifestyle perfectly. Nearly newlyweds, their family is reminiscent of a picture-perfect, modern-day Brady Bunch blending six children; Landon, Jackson, Ireland, Preston, Lucas, and Dylan along with their two cats, Carmel and Daisy, and their dog Bella.

Following their engagement, they completely remodeled Mike’s home while living in Greta’s townhome, in an astounding five short months. Mike notes, “We were engaged in Maui in December 2022 and shortly after that moved into our townhouse and remodeling began in our home. We decided to have a May wedding to match our last name so the timeline for planning was much shorter than we originally intended. The last touch of the remodeling project was completed the day before our wedding with the installation of our basement bar area oven. There were a lot of moving parts with the remodel since we rented out our townhome fully furnished and have another rental home at Cherry Lake. We had Parker Storage store our furniture during the remodel and then had them move furniture and appliances between the three homes. Greta is a masterful coordinator and visionary.”

The remodel was a complete cosmetic overhaul while leaving the floorplan fairly untouched except for the kitchen. Greta laughs, “It started with Mike wanting to have a built-in coffee machine. We also wanted to replace the carpet in the basement with flooring more conducive to having a pool and hot tub in the backyard. Through many conversations with the Houndstooth House team, we ended up deciding to remodel the entire house to fit our large family and lifestyle.”

To accommodate a luxury beverage station they chose from Karl’s TV, Audio & Appliance in Sioux Falls with Mike’s coveted built-in coffee machine and a wine refrigerator for Greta, they closed off a doorway into the kitchen to add wall space. After much thought and collaboration with Denise and Michelle from Houndstooth House, the Mays chose to also completely remodel the kitchen with gorgeous custom cabinetry including a large island with a stunning but casual large dining area overlooking their gorgeous backyard. Since the existing kitchen was in great shape, they recycled the existing cabinetry and appliances to create a full kitchen in their walk-out basement.

The open concept’s soaring ceilings give the space a luxuriously airy, but cozy feel. Mike shares, “Greta’s style is a mix of traditional and modern, feminine and masculine, maybe somewhat eclectic, comfort and function. While unpacking stored boxes she came across my waterfowl taxidermy that I had collected over many years hunting with my Dad. She surprised me by blending them into the décor. The house was full of contractors for several weeks while we were moving in and they were quite surprised and impressed with Greta doing that, too.”

Located on the main floor, their primary bedroom is a quietly glamorous space with huge windows overlooking their backyard. Filled with natural light, luxuriously soft fabrics, and muted beautiful colors, the bedroom opens into a large bath that flows into a walk-in closet.

The Mays designed the lower level to be a perfect hang-out for their children and their friends. Greta smiles, “The family room, kitchen, and backyard are our favorite places to spend our time. It’s where our family is and it’s where we create most of our memories.” A full kitchen flows into an uber comfortable, but stylish, family room complete with a shuffleboard table. The Mays thoughtfully installed luxury vinyl floors throughout the home which is perfect for the indoor/outdoor living spaces.

The lower level opens to a resort-like area complete with a gorgeous in-ground pool, hot tub and pergola with plenty of seating options for their family and guests. “It is our favorite place to spend evenings and weekends when we’re in town whether with family, friends or just us. We especially love that it is a magnet for our children and all of their friends. There’s nothing better than a pool area full of kids!” says Mike.

For many individuals, planning a remodel and wedding at the same time would be intensely stressful, but for Greta and Mike, the experience was amazing. “Denise and Michelle at Houndstooth House have done a lot of projects with Bruce Olson Construction and also took the time to know us well and understand what was important to us. Between those two ladies and Darin from Bruce Olson, their professionalism and expertise made the project stress-free for us with results that matched our style. They helped us to accomplish a home that is comfortable and inviting. We love entertaining and have hosted several large events, along with our kids having a lot of their friends over often. Houndstooth helped us design our furniture to comfortably accommodate our family and guests with style,” shares Mike.

Not quite finished with their custom touches, they have a few remaining spaces left to complete including installing custom draperies as well as updating the lower-level bath. Greta smiles, “Although we’re not quite finished with our changes, our home is just perfect for our family and we all love it.” n

Treating Hearing Loss Early

The importance of hearing screenings for better outcomes

Hearing loss is an issue that affects many people in our country, with 1 in 8 people aged 12 or older experiencing hearing loss. As age increases, the amount of people affected by hearing loss increases as well. Recently, the American Academy of OtolaryngologyHead and Neck Surgery – has come out with new guidelines when it comes to who should be screened for hearing loss. The national recommendation is that everyone age 50 and older should be screened.

Ryan Gregg, an audiologist working with the team at Midwest ENT & Allergy, says that these recommendations may be new, but they reflect the core beliefs many within the field have held for years. Research has found that those with untreated hearing loss are at a higher risk of experiencing cognitive effects due to their hearing loss, such as dementia and other communication and social difficulties.

In a 2020 study by the Lancet Commission, research revealed that untreated hearing loss was the number one modifiable risk factor in delaying or preventing dementia cases, meaning that hearing

loss may be responsible for 800,000 of the nearly 10 million new cases of dementia diagnosed each year. The Lancet article has shed light on the importance of early detection and treatment of hearing loss.

Gregg explains that many who experience hearing loss choose not to address it and may wait at least 5-10 years before choosing to do something about it. People with hearing loss may not think it’s a big deal, or they may not want to wear hearing aids, but those are years that cannot be recovered.

“In midlife, treating your hearing loss is the best way to mitigate early cognitive decline,” Gregg said.

Dr Kenneth Scott, Otolaryngologist at Midwest ENT & Allergy, explains the way to identify hearing loss is through a hearing test called an audiogram. Recommendations can then be made depending on the results of the testing. Dr Scott stresses that even if you don’t need help now, the audiogram gives a comparison for the future if anything changes.

Hearing aid technology has improved over the past few years and new options have arrived. There are now many great hearing aid options that are not as noticeable and will drastically improve hearing loss. Earlens is one of the new hearing systems. Earlens has created a hearing device with 2.5x more bandwidth, making a sound quality that exceeds traditional aids.

“These devices are better, and we need to overcome the stigmas surrounding hearing aids,” Gregg says. “It’s important that we start educating people early on hearing loss and help to encourage them to do something about it so they can maintain their cognitive function as they get older.”

For individuals concerned about their hearing, they can call Midwest ENT& Allergy at (605) 336-3503 to schedule an appointment for a hearing test and further evaluation. n

TPutting Collagen to Work

Skin care from the inside out

he skin is the largest organ of the body, serving as a protective barrier against the sun and environmental pollutants. External factors, along with genetics and lifestyle choices, can accelerate skin aging. Consequently, collagen – a protein that constitutes a third of the body’s protein and is essential for joint health and skin elasticity –has seemed to explode as a trend overnight. Why, exactly? Collagen plumps the skin.

For those seeking the benefits of collagen, various options are available: it can be ingested, applied topically, or injected by an aesthetic specialist.

Collagen enhances skin elasticity and hydration, potentially reducing signs of aging. Jennifer Aniston, for instance, has shared that one of her top beauty secrets is a popular collagen supplement. She mixes Vital Proteins® Collagen powder into her morning coffee.

In addition to supplements, topical collagen products are widely available. Specialty stores like Sephora, and even mainstream retailers like Target, offer a large selection of these products. Amazon also features a vast selection of the newest skincare products.

One of the latest products, Sprinkle U®, introduced in February, combines collagen with vitamin C, niacinamide, and

apple stem cells to address various skin concerns. Applied nightly with a moisturizer, Sprinkle U®’s collagen-enriched formula aims to make skin brighter and more radiant, with noticeable anti-aging benefits for the hands.

For a more intensive (and costly) collagen boost, microcurrent treatments are an option. This non-invasive and safe beauty procedure delivers tiny electrical currents to the face, tightening and smoothing muscles and connective tissues while stimulating collagen production. The immediate effects of in-office microcurrent treatments can last up to two months.

Another advanced method for collagen induction is the SkinPen, a microneedling device. This minimally invasive tool creates hundreds to thousands of micro-punctures in the skin per second and is designed to stimulate the skin’s ability to naturally repair itself. When combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) – the individual’s plasma-rich blood injected into problem areas – it promotes natural skin firmness, reduces pore size, and evens out deep acne scars, resulting in smooth, unblemished skin.

Healthy skin is a reflection of overall wellness. While drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep is fundamental, many people strive for brighter skin as an ultimate goal. Exploring ways to enhance skin health from the inside out can be an aesthetically rewarding step. n

Three Ways to Get Your Legs Ready for Pickleball!

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America, with almost 9 million players on an annual basis. What’s most remarkable, however, is just how accessible pickleball is. People of all ages can participate in this unique mixture of ping-pong and tennis.

But, as with any other sport, sometimes injuries, pain, and discomfort can hold you back–or even keep you off the court entirely. Dr. Gregory Nissen gives three easy tips to help you keep your legs in tip-top shape for your next pickleball tournament!

Tip #1: Deal with Your Knee Pain

Chronic knee pain can prevent you from twisting, turning, and accelerating–leading to missed volleys, weaker serves, and shorter rallies. Sometimes, this type of knee pain can indicate the need for knee replacement surgery–but not always.

“For some patients, a procedure called Genicular Artery Embolization, or GAE, can provide a minimally invasive solution,” said Dr. Patrick Kelly, a vascular surgeon at Dakota Vascular. This procedure uses a few simple injections to reduce the flow to specific blood vessels in your knee.

GAE reduces inflammation and pain without the need for major surgery. Thereby boosting mobility for activities like pickleball.

Tip #2: Don’t Slack on the Stretching and Conditioning

As you age, the body becomes less flexible and it becomes harder to grow muscle. Stay limber, stay strong! Stretching & conditioning can boost your pickleball game by improving flexibility and preventing injuries.

Tip #3: Address Any Leg Pain You Might Have

Most people don’t realize this, but varicose and spider veins can actually cause pain and discomfort, especially in the legs. “Varicose veins can cause soreness in the legs,” said Dr. Angelo Santos, a surgeon at Dakota Vascular. “That pain can hamper your ability to accelerate and move quickly.”

Varicose veins cause leg pain and limit mobility. A vein closure is a quick, nonsurgical option to treat them.

The procedure is generally very quick with very little downtime, meaning you won’t miss much in the way of summer fun–and you’ll be back on the pickleball court fast.

Don’t Let Leg Pain Hold You Back

The bottom line is that leg pain can hold you back–on and off the court. These aches and pains might feel like the natural result of getting older, but it doesn’t always have to be. Talk to your doctor about solutions to help you reduce pain–so you can put your focus back on the pickleball court!

Year-Round

Disease Prevention for Your Pets

If your pet is on preventatives to combat parasites and ectoparasites such as fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites, and heartworm disease, kudos! Now, how many of you have your pets on prevention year-round? If that answer is no, I am here today to remind you why the 24/7 protection of these pests is so important.

South Dakota remains a high-endemic (established) area for many diseases pets can contract. To name a few: Lyme disease, Tularemia, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, hookworms, roundworms, heartworms… and the list could go on and on. Some of us like to keep our pets on prevention based on lifestyle (indoors or outdoors) or the season. Although fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and other pests are known to thrive in warmer climates, they don’t disappear when the temperature drops. Opting to skip preventive treatments just because it’s wintertime could have long-term consequences for your pet. Here are just a few reasons why I recommend year-round prevention:

1. Fleas can have long-term effects once infected. Fleas incite problems such as anemia, tapeworm transmission, and also allergies. As easy as it is for them to contract this parasite, it is even harder to get rid of them on your pet and inside your own home.

2. T icks can also have long-term negative effects. If they stay attached for 36 hours or longer, they can transmit tickborne diseases. Most of these diseases will respond to antibiotics but some can develop life-threatening conditions (kidney failure, liver disease, etc.).

3. Heartworm prevention requires a blood test. Heartworm disease is transmitted via mosquito bite from another pet infected with the disease. This disease will eventually result in heart failure or sudden death if not treated. If your pet is on prevention year-round, it will require less frequent testing.

4. Intestinal parasites: they can get them and so can you. Intestinal parasites, such as tapeworms, hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, giardia, and coccidia, are typically transmitted when your pet ingests substances contaminated by infected feces. Some of these parasites are also capable of being transmitted to you and your family if not treated or prevented.

If I haven’t convinced you yet, or you have an indoor pet that never ventures outside, be mindful that pests can still enter your home or travel through vents if you live in a shared space (such as an apartment).

In our region, we don’t see many positive cases of heartworm. However, our dogs may be at risk from the tourists visiting from high-incidence areas. That is why it is still important to have your dogs tested annually and placed on year-round prevention.

Many products on the market may cover all or a few of these types of diseases. It is crucial that you visit your veterinarian annually to find the best product that fits your lifestyle, your pet, and your wallet. n

Surviving the Unthinkable

Abbey Bruner passes through an all-consuming darkness to find lightness, love, and a new purpose

Meeting Abbey Bruner, you’d never know the pain, agony, and absolute loss she has been through in the past year and a half.

You’d also never guess that behind her kind, intelligent face lies the heart of a rebel. As a teenager in McCook, NE, she was a selfproclaimed wild child. At just 16, she smoked cigarettes, was expelled from school for skipping frequently, and ultimately ran away from home.

Abbey laughs, “Strong-willed my parents called me and they were right! When I became a mother my mother passed on to me her copy of The Strong Willed Child by Dr. James Dobson. I have it on my shelf today. I met my future husband, Johnny Bruner, also born and raised in McCook, a few weeks after I was expelled from school and knew him for about two months before I ran away from home with him to Sioux Falls. My parents never thought we’d make it.” She shares, “At first my mom was furious at me and my parents didn’t even know where we were. When my dad finally found us and came up to see how I was, he saw that we were doing fine. My parents said, ‘OK you can stay.’.” She notes, “My dad supported my decision to stay in Sioux Falls with Johnny Bruner, thinking I’d be back. I remember him asking my mom, ‘What are you going to do, lock her in the basement?’”

Working at a fast-food restaurant to help pay the rent, she realized fairly quickly that she needed to obtain her high school diploma, so she enrolled in a local program to earn her GED. Following that, she enrolled at Kilian Community College to earn a certificate that would launch her into a professional career. Defying the odds for the first time, she and John had stuck together and become best friends. They were married in 1996 and were blessed with their first child Dylan in 1999 and their second, Blake, in 2001. “I was delighted we would have two perfectly spaced children.”

As a young couple, the Bruners bought a modest ranch home in a great Sioux Falls neighborhood on the southern edge of town. When the boys were just three and five, Abbey and John made the tough financial choice to have her stay at home with the boys. She remembers, “Back then, I was an avid listener of the Dr. Laura Schlessinger radio program and she was really big into staying home and said that if it’s important to you, you will find a way to make it work. So we did.”

Staying home with the kids during the week, John would take over on Friday evenings and the weekends when Abbey would work out of the home. “Our little family thrived. We did this for 10 years and I loved it. It was my purpose, and it was everything to me, even though we couldn’t afford cable, cell phones, or summer camps. And it made me and the boys very tight which was the most important thing anyway. I didn’t know who I wanted to be, but I knew I didn’t want to be a bad mother.”

Always an extremely close family, Dylan and Blake grew up best of friends. When Dylan joined the Army, he returned to Sioux Falls after his commitment and he and Blake moved in together, both having left the nest and successfully supporting themselves. For the Bruner’s, life was exactly what they had worked towards and wanted. It was simply perfect until November 21, 2022.

Abbey remembers, “It was a really, weird day. John was home from work and at about 10 am he saw a truck in the neighborhood which is who Blake worked for. He texted him to see if he was working but we don’t know if he ever got that message.” She continues, “It was closing time at work when Dylan called. I said, ‘Hey what’s up?’ He said, ‘Mom you need to get to the apartment right away, Blake is gone.’ I said, ‘Don’t say that.’ He said, ‘Mom come to the apartment, Blake is gone, he is dead.’”

and fell to the ground. I was in shock and disbelief. And then John came.” Sobbing, she remembers, “I remember asking John how am I going to live through this. We just sat there and I just stared at the wall. In the worst moment of my life, the Sioux Falls police and detectives were thoughtful, caring, and tender. Then they said we could go home. Dylan didn’t want to stay at his home so he came home with us. Home was not the same. Little did we know nothing would ever be the same again.”

For the Bruner’s, life stopped as they prepared for Blake’s funeral. “I just remember writing his obituary. How do you write an obituary for someone who was so amazing? I wanted it to be amazing. And I wanted everyone to know what a beautiful human he was but also share how he died. I knew I didn’t want to conceal it. I didn’t want him to be forgotten because he was only here for such a short time. I would meet people who would never get to meet him. For three days I didn’t do anything but write his obituary.” She cried, “My life was over, those two kids were my greatest achievements in my life. I had invested all of my time,

my money everything that I am I had put towards these two children. This was not how our story was supposed to go.”

Life after Blake’s suicide has been hard. “Dylan moved in with us because we wanted him home and we all wanted to be close so he slept on the couch for a few weeks,” Abbey shares. “John and Dylan were grieving differently than I was which was really hard for me. They weren’t crying like I was and I knew I’d need a therapist.” She notes, “Fortunately, my therapist dropped everything for me. I talked to her every day for that first week including weekends and Sundays.”

In addition, Abbey ultimately reached out to the Helpline Center, enrolling in their surviving suicide class, and attended their suicide grief support group. She remembers, “Others in the class were talking about things that I was feeling that I wasn’t telling anyone. Marriages don’t last after something like this, especially when John wasn’t crying and grieving like I was. I had no idea how I was going to keep going and I didn’t want to. It felt like Dylan and John would be fine without me because they are so similar. It didn’t feel like they needed me and I was angry at them because it didn’t crumble them on the outside. I really thought my world was over because highly stressful life events can be devastating for a marriage, what if we don’t recover from this?”

Once more defying the odds, with help, they survived as a family. Today, Abbey, John, and Dylan are moving forward and ensuring that Blake will never be forgotten while raising awareness for others. Getting involved in The 437 Project was a blessing for Abbey and John. “We wanted to give back to the Helpline Center for all the support that has played a big part in surviving the devastating loss of my son.” She shares, “The 437 Project is a group of runners that run relay style for suicide prevention, literally running 437 miles across the state of South Dakota, raising funds to support the Helpline Center. Suicide affects every demographic and every economic status. But it’s something that nobody talks about. Volunteering with this amazing project has been a godsend for John and I.

GRETA MAY

Sharing our story and walking alongside others on their suicide grief journey has provided so much healing for both of us. The relationships I have made working with The 437 Project have truly inspired this next chapter of my life. They have inspired me to believe in myself, keep my head up, and know that each new day is an opportunity to keep moving forward.”

And while life for her family will never be the perfect life it was before they lost Blake, Abbey and her family have found a path to move forward and they cherish every moment they have together. “For every walk, for every project, anything I feel I need to do, they’re both right there with me. Supporting me, they don’t complain, they show up. And they don’t say it, but I know it’s rewarding and healing for them to honor Blake.”

For Abbey, it has made her appreciate how precious life is for everyone. “I feel like I can do anything. I’ve met so many amazing people and I feel like I’m somebody now and I feel like everybody else is too. I don’t know if I felt that before. I’m definitely a better person today and I’ve learned to not try to fake it, just start off being yourself and just do it. That’s what makes you special.” n
