Rekindling Romance
THE POWER OF WEEKLY DATE NIGHTS
By Chellee Unruh
As busy women we often find ourselves juggling multiple responsibilities, causing our marriages to take a backseat. However, maintaining a strong connection with your spouse is crucial for a lasting, fulfilling relationship. One powerful way to nurture this bond is through regular date nights.
The concept is simple: each week, you and your spouse take turns planning a date. This approach ensures both partners are equally invested and allows for a delightful element of surprise. Start by setting a consistent day that works for your schedule. Whether it’s every Friday evening or Sunday afternoon, consistency is key.
When it’s your turn to plan, embrace the opportunity to surprise your spouse. When it’s their turn, resist the urge to pry or change plans. This back-and-forth keeps things exciting and unpredictable.
Don’t be afraid to explore new activities. Consider cooking classes, nature hikes, or local cultural events. Remember, not every date needs to be extravagant. A picnic in the park or a leisurely walk can be just as meaningful as a fancy night out. The important thing is to disconnect from distractions and reconnect with each other.
Use this opportunity to try new things you’ve always been curious about. Maybe it’s ballroom dancing, wine tasting, or even rock climbing! Rediscover your local area by being a tourist in your town. Visit museums, historical sites, or parks you’ve overlooked.
Learning together can be a wonderful bonding experience. Sign up for a class or workshop where you can acquire a new skill side by side. Occasionally, plan dates that recreate your early courtship to rekindle that initial spark.
Be flexible in your approach. If obligations interfere with your planned date night, don’t cancel— reschedule. The key is maintaining the commitment to quality time together.
Remember, the goal isn’t perfection. It’s all about creating regular opportunities for connection and shared experiences. Over time, these date nights may become the highlight of your week.
By taking turns planning, you not only share the responsibility but also continue to learn about each other’s interests. This ongoing discovery keeps your relationship fresh and exciting, even after decades.
Hopefully, this article inspires you to commit to weekly date nights with your spouse. It may feel daunting at first, but stick with it. The rewards— a stronger connection, improved communication, and a rekindled spark—are worth the effort. Your marriage deserves this investment. Start this week, and watch as your relationship blossoms anew. n
When my mom was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at age 59, her simple wish was to spend her time surrounded by family. As the disease progressed, the moments we captured—through photos, videos, and keepsakes—became irreplaceable, allowing us to remember her warmth, her kindness, and the love she poured into our lives. They continue to help keep her memory and spirit alive and give our family a way to remember her and share stories. Thankfully, a variety of tools make it possible to preserve these precious memories.
Photo Books
Services like Shutterfly, Mixbook, or Chatbooks make it easy to create albums to showcase your favorite photos and add captions, dates, and personal notes.
Digital Journals & Story Apps
For those who love storytelling, digital journals are a fantastic option. Apps like Day One allow you to pair photos and even video snippets with your written reflections. These digital entries can be shared across devices and stored in the cloud, making them easily accessible for future generations. Story apps like StoryWorth prompt family members with questions and compile answers into a book, perfect for capturing family history in a simple, engaging way.
Memory Boxes
Filled with mementos like ticket stubs, postcards, handwritten letters, or tiny artwork, it’s like a time capsule. Companies like Savor offer beautifully designed, curated keepsake boxes to store these items beautifully and evolve over the years.
Video Diaries
Whether filming a quick chat over breakfast, capturing laughter during a family game night, or recording an interview with a parent, tools like WeVideo and iMovie make it easy to edit and store these snippets.
Digital Family Hubs
For tech-savvy families, a family website offers a modern way to stay connected, preserve memories, and keep a family archive. Platforms like Wix and Squarespace allow everyone to contribute photos, blog entries, and even family timelines.
Preserving memories is an investment in what matters most. Find a tool that works for you and don’t be afraid to start small. Remember, even the most advanced tools are only as powerful as the people who use them.

BEAT THE WINTER DRAB
Get that healthy glow
By Jessalyn Holsing
Winters can be long, and along with that, sometimes our Midwest weather can make winter feel even longer, drabbier, and drearier. During these bleak days, it can be difficult to lift our spirits, but we can combat this by giving ourselves little reasons to feel more positive—like little treats for ourselves. As they say, when you look good, you feel good! Why not give yourself a glow when the outdoor weather won’t give it to you?
Spray tanning and self-tanners are excellent, efficient, and healthy ways to give your skin some color, tone, and glow without sacrificing the wellbeing of your skin. Whether you’re new to spray and self-tanning or a seasoned veteran who wants to brush up on your skills, here are some tips and tricks to help you get a glow going that will look good and last.
Before tanning, whether doing a spray tan or applying self-tanner on your own, be sure to shave/wax and exfoliate at least 24 hours before tanning (if waxing, you may want to give it 2-3 days). Be sure to moisturize well after, applying extra moisturizer to locations like your elbows and knees or any areas on yourself that get particularly dry so your skin there is smooth and receptive to the tan. Immediately before tanning, shower so your skin is clean, but do not shave or exfoliate! Avoid applying a moisturizer or lotion, as it can create a barrier that disallows your tan from developing on your skin. If you plan to have your nails done for a special occasion, make an appointment to get them done before tanning—as nail polish, soaking, and other chemicals can strip your tan.
If using a self-tanner at home, using a mitt to apply the tanner is best, and use a gentle circular motion to achieve an even tan. Don’t forget to tan your ears and the back of your neck! When getting a spray tan, a shower cap is typically provided, so leave your ears out while protecting your hair so that you don’t accidentally wind up with mismatched ears. After tanning, you may gently dab locations like your knees, underarms, or other areas to remove excess tanning product to prevent those areas from developing too dark. Don’t wash your hands, but use a gentle wipe like baby wipes on the palms of your hands, and remove excess tanner from between your fingers for a more natural-looking tan. Wear loose, dark clothing to your appointment so that when you leave and your tan is still developing, you will avoid as much transfer or rub-off as possible.
After your tan has developed and you go to shower off the product, again, avoid exfoliating and shaving, or using other harsh chemicals that may strip the tan. Use warm, not too hot, water, and dry yourself off with gentle pats of the towel instead of rubbing. Also, avoid exercising or doing an activity that would cause you to sweat after you’ve tanned! If you’ve done this before bed - it is best to wear loose clothing to keep yourself cool, calm, and comfortable, avoiding sweating off the tan.
Finally, in the days following your tan (especially if you’re on vacation or at a special occasion), avoid hot tubs and chlorinated pools. Keep your skin moisturized. You may also want to use a variety of products available that help extend the life of a spray or self-tan.
With these tips, you should be able to get a healthy, beautiful glow that looks natural, lasts a while, and brings some brightness to your bleary winter days! n
Winter Woes Begone
VACATION WEAR
By Jessalyn Holsing
We love to beat the winter woes with a vacation somewhere warm, with the sun on our shoulders and our toes in the sand. So, what’s hot for vacation and resort trends in early 2025?
Some fun color choices are trending this year, especially in swimwear. The black one-piece is a classic that’s never left, but we’re seeing some fun one-shoulder and cutaway panels that give us a fresh spin on an oldie but goodie. The boldest choice is nude or tan-colored swimsuits! Whether one piece or bikini, we’re seeing neutral nude tones in a wide variety of tan and beige. Make this look more fun by opting for a suit with a fun texture, like ribbing or mesh. Speaking of textures, mesh, ribbing, beading, and even crochet swimsuits are on the rise, so even if you opt for monotone, you can have some personal flair and style. Finally, pastels are a favorite- look for blush pinks, soft lilacs, sky blues, and even gentle greens to give a pretty, pleasant look.
When you’re in between pool time, some fun trends can spruce up your fashion-forwardness as you come and go. Sailor and navy-style wear with lapels, navy blues, and red and white accents are very classy. Mid and calf-length skirts are still on trend - simply because they are breezy and beautiful. Sandals are a must-have - leave the boots at home! Finally, unbuttoned and loose cotton shirts are perfect for layering, whether as a replacement for a swimwear coverup or a lounging and relaxed look while grabbing a bite to eat.
Step out in peep-toe heels or flats and accessorize with woven handbags and gold or pearl jewelry— keep it minimal as an accent to maintain a very relaxed vacation look! Remember, you’re taking a break, getting some air, and spending some time on yourself to wash the winter woes away. You can look cute and cool, and be a little bit lazy on this year’s winter vacation. n

Well, fret no more, you can level up your happy hour gathering spread with these high-protein buffalo chicken dip and slow cooker cranberry apple cider recipes.
Buffalo chicken dip is tried and true and certainly a fan favorite. The following recipe gives you a savory kick - with more protein to satiate everyone’s appetite! Winter is almost too cold for punches, often the easiest big-batch drink for get-togethers. While you can always go for a classic hot apple cider, this Slow Cooker Cranberry Apple Cider recipe adds some extra spice and flare to one of fall and winter’s most iconic drinks while subtracting unnecessary sugar. This recipe takes very little prep and cleanup, making it easy for you to cozy up with this cider while catching up with friends!
Slow Cooker Cranberry Apple Cider

The Skinny on Calories:
NOT ALL CALORIES ARE CREATED EQUAL!
By Charlotte Hofer
Let’s not sugar-coat it. If you think a calorie is just a calorie, think again. Because while calories might be a unit of energy, their effects on the body vary wildly depending on their source. And that may be the reason that even though you’re sticking to your diet religiously and counting every calorie like it’s the last truffle on earth, you find that not only is the weight not budging, but you’re exhausted too! Counting calories may just be sabotaging your diet!
For example, compare two snacks: a 200-calorie apple with a dab of peanut butter, and a 200-calorie bag of chips. On paper, it seems like they’d be the same, right? But the difference is huge. The apple and peanut butter give you an energy boost — fiber, protein, good fats, water — which keeps you feeling full longer. The chips, on the other hand, are mostly empty calories. Sure, they taste great, but they offer little nutritional value, and because the chips are processed, they don’t stay in your stomach for long. You’re hungry again in 5 minutes, which makes it easier to eat the whole bag!
Or imagine this: you make a fast-food dive, topped off by a cinnamon roll. The roll alone could have 800 calories! Your body says, “Woah, fat high, sugar high, and now I’m crashing!” But when you eat 800 calories of whole foods — like grilled
Q: Are 200 calories of chocolate the same as 200 fruit calories?
A: Not at all! While both have the same number of calories, they’re very different in nutritional value and how they affect the body.
salmon and a salad — your body breathes a sigh of relief! Because these nutrient-dense foods provide steady energy, keep you full, and don’t leave you feeling sluggish. Junk food, rather, is like trying to run your car on syrup! It doesn’t go well.
Here’s why: foods like veggies and fruit are loaded not only with vitamins, but fiber too, which takes up more space in your stomach. That helps you feel fuller with fewer calories. Empty calories, like candy or sugary coffee drinks, don’t do that. They give you the energy rocket-high, but then the crash. And if you’re not burning that sugar off, it’s likely stored as fat.
The star power of protein! Protein is the MVP of the nutrition world! Eating 100 calories of eggs, fish, or Greek yogurt will fuel you much better than 100 calories of white bread. Your body burns more energy digesting protein than it does carbs or fats and keeps you full longer.
If you’re trying to lose weight, consuming 1,500-1,800 calories a day is generally recommended. Just don’t go too low. Fewer calories than that can lead to fatigue, mood swings, and even hair loss (yikes)! The key isn’t just counting calories, it’s choosing the right kind. A Springtime Décor Refresh
CURATING A PERSONAL STYLE WITH PILLOWS AND BOOKS
By Virginia Olson
Spring is on the horizon, and that means it’s time to infuse your home with fresh, vibrant colors. Warm greens, blues, yellows, soft pinks and every shade of light brown from tan to the palest beige can transform a living space and capture the spirit of a new season. Pillows and books can be those few thoughtful touches that add feelings of renewal and joy.
WHO DOESN’T LOVE PILLOWS?
Pillows are the unsung heroes of seasonal décor. They offer easy and affordable ways to introduce the textures and colors of spring into your home. One place to begin this seasonal change is with the heart of the living room, your sofa. Swap out the winter pillows for lighter, springtime pillows in color schemes that are consistent and speak to you.
Mix and match. Vary shapes and sizes to bring dimension to your space. Play with scale from rectangular to square, big to small. Also play with pattern and with harmonious color palettes. And don’t be afraid to try out floral garden prints! Remember to focus on texture. From eclectic shag and embroidery to luxurious linen and silk, textures are meant to work together. Finally, don’t get carried away with too many pillows. Fill your space with enough to add color and interest but be sure you leave room for lounging.
SPRING DÉCOR WITH BOOKS
Make the most of your books as you go about this seasonal
change. Books are more than just items on a shelf; they are gateways to other worlds and times. In a spring-inspired home, they can serve as decorating elements that add character.
A bookshelf is an excellent place to introduce a spring ethos. Thoughtfully arrange books by color to create an ombre effect transitioning from the lightest shade to the darkest. Next, intermingle small seasonal accents like lemon, orange or vetiver candles with warm scents and perhaps add a few Easter decorations. The key is to create a bookshelf backdrop that feels personal and inspiring rather than staged.
Don’t forget the coffee table. Consider displaying books with beautiful covers and with spring titles. (Yes, Amazon and local vendors have a category for that genre!)
“I like to group personal books on coffee tables,” said Kayla Hathaway, a design consultant at Montgomery’s. “Stack a large, oversized art book along with a family history, a local cookbook or some vintage editions found second-hand.”
PERSONIFICATION
Using color and a little imagination, books and pillows can be simple and inexpensive ways to introduce hints of spring into your living space. Each personifies a home. Pillows bring comfort and warmth; books add soul and character. And in a deeper sense, both serve as a reflection of you. n
A Uniquely Custom Home HERITAGE HOMESTEAD BRINGING MODERN LIFE TO A
By Margaret Pennock
Nestled on a third-generation homestead in rural Lyons, SD, Jacob & Kelly Bunde, their daughter Bo and Labrador Drax, are embracing life in a custom-built home featuring upcycled materials and handcrafted key elements. An architect with a strong background in construction, Jacob first conceptualized the house as a minimalist cube design, a vision he shared with Kelly on their very first date.
“Once we got engaged, we started discussing building the house,” Kelly recalls. “We had the opportunity to purchase the land from Jacob’s grandparents who live next door so we could bring the vision to life. I’d never lived in the country before, so it was an adjustment for me—I love being around people—but I trusted him completely. He’s confident and gets things done.” She laughs, adding, “We finished the house in just 90 days and moved in on Halloween weekend, a month before our wedding.”
The Bundes hired Morton Buildings to construct the home’s exterior, opting for an angled roof over the traditional peaked design to achieve a distinctly modern aesthetic. While Jacob’s expertise in architecture and construction guided the project, Kelly eagerly joined in, contributing to various aspects of the build.
Photos by Dylan HIllestad, Sioux Falls Real Estate Photography
The couple dedicated countless hours to crafting their 1,800-square-foot slab-on-grade home. They poured concrete countertops and bathroom sinks and painted the interior—often working late into the night under contractor lights. Beyond the main house, they also constructed a 1,000-squarefoot gym/home office and a dog kennel with an attached pet apartment for their farm cats.
“We were both into bodybuilding when we met, so fitness is a big part of our lives,” Kelly explains. “Having a gym was important since we weren’t sure how often we’d make it into Sioux Falls. At some point, I can see us connecting the gym to the house with a glass walkway.”
Unlike many first-time homeowners, Jacob and Kelly thrived on making design decisions. “We handled everything ourselves,” Kelly says. “Jacob has a Bachelor’s in Environmental Design, and his Master’s in Architecture background gave us a clear vision. He’d present me with options, and he always set me up to pick the ‘right’ one,” she jokes. “Honestly, I trusted him, and we’re super compatible. He’s my dude.”
The couple’s love of modern, clean, and minimal design is evident throughout the home, complemented by warm textures, airy spaces, and abundant natural light. Kelly added her personal touches with boho-inspired accents, including numerous plants. “Our house stays at 74 degrees and with all the natural light they absolutely thrive here, and many were gifts from my mom, who has an incredible green thumb.”
The home’s standout feature is an entire exterior wall of upcycled windows salvaged from South Dakota State University’s Student Union, paired with two fully functional, full-view glass garage doors. One opens onto a patio with a fire pit and seating area. “The large windows let in so much natural light and create a beautiful connection to nature,” Kelly says. “In winter, it feels like we’re living in a snow globe, and the sunrises are absolutely incredible.”
To soften and add warmth to the home’s modern exterior, They planted vines from Jacob’s grandfather’s original farmhouse and flowering hops around the property.
Inside, the open-concept design blends organic elements with modern touches. Timber-wrapped walls, antlers from the farm, cowhide rugs from Rita’s in Custer, and coyote pelts add rustic warmth. A live Christmas palm, nicknamed Coco, anchors the living space, planted directly into the soil beneath the foundation. “The concrete company was really taken aback by being asked to put a fire pit ring in the living room,” Kelly laughs. “We travel a lot and this is a nod to our adventurous spirit. When it gets as tall as you want, you actually dig it up to bind the roots and it will quit growing.”
"I love that our home is built on land that's been in my husband's family since they came to America. It's truly unique and special, and we plan to stay here forever."
– Kelly Bunde
An acrylic bubble chair in the living room creates a sentimental design focal point. “We bought the chair before anything else,” Kelly shares. “It set the tone for the entire house.”
The kitchen continues the theme of thoughtful upcycling, featuring metal cabinets from the Madison school district’s art room and a custom island featuring more of Jacob’s mastery of concrete work. The island’s stools were crafted from trees planted by Jacob’s grandfather in 1946 while the sliding barn door and headboard in the primary bedroom were made from timber sourced from the family farm’s cattle shed.
The primary bedroom is sleek and functional, with a glass wall separating it from the bathroom and an adjacent large walk-in closet that includes an integrated laundry area.
Every aspect of the home was designed with an eye on efficiency and practicality, from its energy-saving orientation to its custom features tailored for Jacob’s height (6’7”), including elevated counters and light switches.
Kelly’s favorite part of the home is the sense of togetherness it fosters. “I love the wideopen living space,” she says. “It’s perfect for cooking, dining, playing board games, or enjoying movie nights as a family. It’s incredibly special to live in a home designed and built by us, for us.” n
“My parents were small business owners, and I grew up watching them prioritize community relationships. Their influence has shaped how I engage clients, it’s why relationships are so important to me.”

CONNECTING THE HEART AND SOUL OF HAUSMANN CONSTRUCTION TO
THE COMMUNITIES
THEY SERVE
For Ashley Abramson, fostering genuine relationships is the key to successfully connecting Hausmann Construction with its clients and the communities they serve. Over 15 years, Ashley has risen from a college student answering phones to leading Marketing and Business Development for a company with a footprint spanning eight states and six corporate offices, including one in South Dakota.
“The company grew so rapidly, and it just took me along with it,” Ashley reflects. “Relationships have been the grounding factor in all that growth. As we expand into new markets, connecting with the people and businesses in each community helps me understand how Hausmann can serve them.”
The home base for Hausmann Construction and Ashley is Lincoln, Nebraska. The company expanded its operations to South Dakota in 2021, officially opening an office in downtown Sioux Falls at the Plaza Building on Philips Avenue in January 2024. “I absolutely love downtown Sioux Falls,” shares Ashley. “It’s so charming and has a strong entrepreneurial spirit, much like Hausmann. Part of my role is to make sure each office grows in the same direction as the home office, and Sioux Falls fits our culture so well—a mix of Midwestern friendliness with cutting-edge technology. This city is the perfect place for us to expand, and we’re truly excited to be here.”
Ashley regularly travels to Sioux Falls to make connections, deepen her understanding of the market, and get a pulse on gaps in the community. The construction industry is shifting, she says, and insight into how a city operates and what it needs are important parts of a collaborative building mentality, something she takes into her team leadership.
“For us, being a good partner goes beyond just business—it’s about meaningful connections,” adds Jamie O’Donnell, Hausmann’s Communications Manager. “Ashley is deeply invested in the relationships between our company and the communities we serve, and she leads from that space. Her goal is to understand a community’s identity so our projects and the stories we tell about them are based on real relationships.”
In Sioux Falls, Ashley has already organized volunteer efforts, including renovating a monkey exhibit at the Great Plains Zoo. She’s eager to collaborate with area schools to introduce students to construction experiences and potential career choices. “We’re excited to keep establishing ourselves in Sioux Falls and see how we can make a positive impact on the industry and the community here,” Ashley says.

Invest in Yourself to Stay Present
MAINTAIN YOUR INDEPENDENCE, PRESENCE, AND HAPPINESS BY MAINTAINING YOUR HEARING
By Margaret Pennock
Most of us strive to age gracefully, holding onto our youth and vitality for as long as possible. Typically, this means focusing on physical health through smart lifestyle choices, taking care of our appearance, and visiting primary care physicians for regular checkups. However, one critical aspect of aging well—hearing health—is often overlooked.
According to Bob Froke, an audiologist at Midwest ENT & Allergy, individuals experiencing hearing loss often endure embarrassment, exhaustion, isolation, anger, forgetfulness, and even cognitive decline long before seeking help from a hearing specialist. Remarkably, the average person waits seven years to address hearing loss.
“Studies have shown that people who address hearing loss early are able to maintain their independence significantly longer than those who don’t,” Bob explains. “They often delay
the need for nursing home or assisted living care by years.”
And for people who think that hearing loss is for just the ‘elderly’, think again. Bob emphasizes the importance of establishing a hearing baseline as early as age 50. “You should have your hearing checked every two years after 50, and annually after 60,” he advises. “One in four people will experience significant hearing loss after age 60, and this number doubles after age 70.” The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) reports that more than half of people in their 70s and over 80% of those in their 80s have mild to moderate hearing loss.
Hearing loss doesn’t just affect the individual—it impacts their entire circle, including family, friends, and acquaintances. Many people withdraw from activities and relationships due to the frustrations caused by their condition.
Fortunately, while hearing loss isn’t entirely preventable, it can be managed and maintained with the help of a licensed provider. “Research shows that patients whose hearing we address with proper care and a hearing improvement plan experience minimal progression of their condition,” says Bob. “By checking devices annually and ensuring nerves are stimulated correctly, we can preserve and minimize the digression of hearing loss. Like any health condition, early treatment leads to better outcomes. Investing in your hearing is an investment in yourself.”
For more information or to schedule a hearing consultation, contact Midwest ENT & Allergy at 605.275.1205 or visit midwestent.com. n
“My patients feel more confident, and life becomes easier because their mental and emotional fatigue decreases. Embarrassment from always asking people to repeat themselves is exhausting. After addressing their hearing loss, my patients feel more alert and awake at the end of the day. When I see these changes, I know I’ve done my job well. Helping people in this way has been incredibly rewarding.”

MARY J. JORDAN is a seasoned Certified Family Nurse Practitioner and the owner of Encompass Wellness, located in Sioux Falls and Dakota Dunes, South Dakota. With over 20 years of experience in healthcare, Mary has become a trusted expert in hormone replacement therapy (HRT), specializing in natural, bioidentical solutions for both men and women.
Mary treats women navigating perimenopause and menopause and helps men manage andropause through the restoration of testosterone levels. Each patient receives a tailored treatment plan based on their individual labs and symptoms. The HRT, delivered in the form of small pellets, mimics the body’s natural hormones and is placed under the skin. Many patients begin to feel relief from symptoms within 1-2 weeks.
Her clinic also offers a comprehensive medical weight loss program, drawing on her extensive experience with GLP-1 weight loss medications, including those used to manage diabetes before they were FDA-approved for weight loss. The program includes detailed labs and the use of the InBody scale to track progress, helping patients achieve results they never thought would be possible.
Encompass Wellness recently introduced cutting-edge treatments like Vtone and FormaV for vaginal rejuvenation. Vtone uses electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) to strengthen the pelvic floor, helping to reduce urinary incontinence and frequency— one treatment is equivalent to 22,000 Kegel exercises. When paired with FormaV, these treatments also improve elasticity, sensitivity, and alleviate vaginal dryness.
In addition to hormone therapy and weight loss services, Encompass Wellness offers a wide range of aesthetic and wellness services, including adult primary care, thyroid management, laser treatments (such as hair removal, BBL, ClearSilk, ClearV, and SkinTyte), as well as Botox, fillers, IV hydration, NAD+, and Glutathione therapies.
Mary’s ultimate goal is to help her patients maintain a youthful appearance and feel their best at any age.
VETERINARIAN’S BLOG: Ear Care101
By Dr. Amanda Zanger
IF YOU HAVE A DOG OR CAT that continues to have ear infections, there could be many sources for their problem. Infection of the external ear canal (outer ear infection) is called otitis externa and is one of the most common types of infections seen in our furry friends. Ear infections can arise from many different issues, such as breed anatomy, allergies, external parasites, and/or systemic illness. This article is aimed at providing you with information regarding therapeutic goals for your pet.
BREED ANATOMY
Some breeds, particularly those with large, floppy, or hairy ears (e.g., cocker spaniels, miniature poodles, Old English sheepdogs) are more prone to ear infections. For these breeds, I recommend maintenance at-home ear cleaning 1-2 times per month and clipping the hair around the inside of the ear. This will help reduce the amount of wax buildup in the canal, improve air ventilation, and reduce the infection rate. I would advise not to clean the ear canals more than once a week as it can dry out the ears and create more problems.
EXTERNAL PARASITES
If your pet is not on year-round prevention, they are at risk for external parasites such as ear mites, Demodex, etc. These parasites can cause several signs, including a black discharge, scratching, and head shaking. Ear mite infections are more common in puppies and kittens, but adult animals can also acquire these diseases.
ALLERGIES
Many dogs with chronic (long-term) or recurrent ear infections have allergies. Allergies can be caused by the environment or by their food. If your veterinarian suspects a food allergy, an elimination diet trial may be recommended to see if it breaks the repeated infection cycle; this involves feeding your dog a diet that contains a type of protein your dog has not been previously exposed to (novelty protein). The immune system will not recognize and react to the new protein, which may reduce your dog’s symptoms. If it is suspected to be an environmental allergy, consult with your veterinarian for different therapeutic options.
SYSTEMIC ILLNESS
Certain underlying diseases that can lead to repeated ear infections also include hormonal issues like hypothyroidism. Bloodwork would be recommended to screen for these processes. If an underlying disease is suspected, it must be diagnosed and treated, or your pet will continue to experience ear problems.
In conclusion, there can be many reasons why your pet is experiencing sudden or recurrent ear infections. Consult with your veterinarian for the most optimal treatment options which could include ear swab cytology (microscopic examination), bloodwork to screen for underlying disease, food trial, or environmental allergy therapy. Your veterinarian will also be able to help your pet’s clinical signs with recommended treatments/medications. n

JACOB LIZ
Learning the joy of growing roots and slowing down
By Margaret Pennock
Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks
Not your typical Midwesterner, Liz Jacob looks like she would be right at home on the Fast and Furious movie set with her edgy persona. However, her thousand-watt smile and genuinely kind personality are 100 percent South Dakotan.
Moving from the East Coast to the West while growing up, Liz eventually settled nearly smack dab in the middle—in Sioux Falls—to start her own family. Growing up as a first-generation American in New York as the daughter of Singaporean and Taiwanese emigrants, she has lived an exceptionally interesting life in her 37 years.
“I’ve been working two to three jobs since I was 13 years old, not because I had to, but because I watched my parents work multiple jobs and thought that was normal,” Liz explains. “When I was 15, I dropped out of high school, got my GED, and went to trade school to become an auto mechanic, which I was for 17 years. I’ve always been independent and wanted the financial ability to back that. I’ve never been afraid to try new things or jump into new ventures, and I’m always willing to learn. I didn’t have much guidance growing up, so I learned everything the hard way and on my own. Absolutely everything.”
HAVING ALWAYS EMBRACED FREEDOM and openmindedness, Liz has had more experiences than most people twice her age. She’s been an auto mechanic, auto sales professional, salon worker, general manager in retail and restaurant establishments, property manager, bartender, bar manager, bail bondsman, heavy machinery operator, dog trainer, tattoo artist, and permanent makeup artist. She’s also the only double-certified fibro blasting technician in South Dakota. “I’ve dabbled in a lot of stuff because it was a challenge, and I enjoyed it. Having worked all those multiple jobs at a time always opened new opportunities for me,” she shares.
IN ADDITION to enjoying the challenges of work, Liz is extremely loyal to her family and friends. This loyalty brought her to Sioux Falls, where she now owns and operates Divergent Ink, LLC, a permanent makeup and tattoo studio where she performs fibroblast skin tightening.
“I never planned to be a tattoo artist. I wanted to be an esthetician and had won a scholarship to a university in San Francisco to earn my degree. However, on the very first day of school, I got a phone call from my mother saying she had been diagnosed with cervical cancer and would have to undergo chemotherapy and radiation.”
WITHOUT HESITATION, Liz and her husband, Ray, sold everything, bought a four-wheel drive vehicle, and moved to Minot, North Dakota, to care for her mother. Tragically, one year after her mother completed treatment for stage 3 cervical cancer, she was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer, followed by stage 1 breast cancer a year later.
During this time, Liz accepted a job as a general manager for a restaurant chain in Sioux Falls and moved her mother and Ray with her to manage her mother’s cancer care more easily. Previously, they had been driving seven and a half hours to Sioux Falls for treatment. “It wasn’t until my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and told she would need a double mastectomy that I saw how much it affected her mentally. She had been steadfast through the other cancers, even though they were more severe, but being told they had to remove parts of her body— parts that made her feel feminine—hit her the hardest. She said she would rather die…”.
IT WAS THEN THAT LIZ resolved to use her newly acquired permanent makeup expertise to specialize in 3D areolas and nipples, helping women like her mother regain a sense of normalcy. “My goal was to help women see
themselves in the mirror and feel better about their situation. I also donated a percentage of the profits to charity or local families in need of financial assistance for medical bills.”
THIS COMPASSIONATE MISSION inspired Liz to create Divergent Ink, LLC, a welcoming and diverse boutique that defies the stereotypical ‘tattoo shop’. “I wanted to create an environment that wasn’t intimidating for people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life. I wanted a different kind of shop—one that wasn’t just about tattoos but also about giving back to the community. I strive for a safe, professional, and drama-free environment and have cultivated an amazing crew. I’m grateful for each and every one of them.”
Deeply committed to helping others, Liz frequently organizes charity fundraising events throughout the year for the local military (her husband Ray served in the Air Force and her sister retired from the Air Force and works at the Veteran’s Administration), children’s, and animal welfare organizations.
Now a doting and fiercely protective mother of two young daughters, Liz admits she never planned to have children. “To be honest, I never wanted kids. We planned for the two we have, and I’m so grateful for them, but initially, I wasn’t the nurturing type. I just wanted to focus on business.” She laughs, “I’ve evolved from being all business to being all business and all family. My mindset has changed tremendously. I’ve grown up.”
THROUGHOUT HER JOURNEY, she has also chosen to submerge herself into fitness, first as an escape from reality and later transitioning to an outlet for stress. "After moving to Sioux Falls, I joined a local fitness center after winning a Garmin watch. I reignited my fuel and started going two to
three times a day. After a year, I was voted to be a coach by the members of the gym. I gave up a a $50,000 a year job for a $10 per class that I would coach - basically leaving me with nothing but the passion to help others reach their goals." Today, Liz doesn't teach anymore but is passionate about fitness. She has found her place in Crossfit Viable classes, where she feels she has found her 'community' of like-minded people, even taking her daughters from when they were born to class with her. "I want to be an example for my girls so they know the importance of their health and fitness. It's important for them to see that it's okay to be uncomfortable in a good way when it's pushing yourself to do better for your health. We might struggle, we might say a few things during the workout as we manage to get through it, but at the end of the day, it's the best feeling in the world when we feel accomplished for getting it done."
With her daughters, her priorities have shifted significantly, and her goals have been reprioritized. “Having kids has slowed me down and forced me to reassess my goals and how I want to live my life. I prioritize my kids first, and my businesses come second. Next year, I’ll be homeschooling my daughter and taking a new step.”
This step is her latest venture: an eLearning business where she teaches individuals how to earn money from home. “I want to help people avoid needing a second job or gain flexibility in case of job loss or emergencies like caring for a loved one. If there’s something I can teach that helps someone, I’m happy to do it. I love helping others succeed and building their confidence. I want people to know they have someone supporting them, cheering them on, finding answers for them, and helping them expand their wings.” n
LIVE INSPIRED 365 | “GOODS FOR GOOD”
Sioux Falls non-profit inspires hope with products supporting mental health by donating 10,000 journals
By Virginia Olson | Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks
How do you go about inspiring hope when someone you know is struggling with their mental health? Live Inspired 365, a local nonprofit at 3701 West 49th Street, Suite 108, is attempting to promote mental health awareness and suicide prevention by selling “goods for good.”
“All our merchandise contains messages of positivity and encouragement, and 100% of the proceeds are used to support people who are struggling with their mental health and addictions,” said co-founder Chantelle Friedman.
Chantelle, along with co-founder Michelle Thie, started the non-profit in October of 2022 when they opened an online gift shop.
The non-profit had its roots in stickers and journals.
“The whole idea got going when we successfully sold
stickers that carried messages of hope. Within two weeks, 4,000 stickers had been sold through our personal media sites. My hope was that enough stickers would be sold to start purchasing journals for patients in behavioral health.”
WHY A JOURNAL?
For many, journaling provides a safe space to process emotions, track progress, and gain clarity over complex thoughts. It serves as a tool for self-reflection and a record of resilience, fostering growth and healing along the journey.
“Behavioral health patients were often instructed to journal yet were never given a journal while they were hospitalized, until we came along,” said Chantelle.
Journaling is a powerful tool in the healing process. The sticker sales led to the purchase and donation of 500
journals. To date, the non-profit has donated over 10,000 journals locally!
"The stickers go beyond supporting our mission of caring for others," Chantelle said. “They spark meaningful conversations about the importance of mental health. The more we talk about mental health, we decrease the stigma and encourage others to get help.”
Within their sticker designs is a special SAY MY NAME collection.
“These designs are created with families that have lost a loved one to suicide. We can continue to say their name in hopes of helping someone else,” said Chantelle.
Volunteers of all ages are behind sticker designs that include their messages. Each sticker is also stamped on the back with 988, the National Crisis Hotline number.
Stickers are still the mainstay of the non-profit. It is now a gift shop that donates tangible items to behavioral health patients. Kim Ryckman joined Live Inspired 365 in 2024. “It’s a safe and happy place for people to talk about mental health, and it remains 100% volunteer.”
Live Inspired 365 is planning its Gala for March 29 at the Country Club of Sioux Falls. If you are interested in attending, go to liveinspired365.org for more information. n

Midwest Hyperbarics brings innovative hyperbaric oxygen therapy to Sioux Falls
By Margaret Pennock | Photos courtesy of Lacuna Studio
In a medical landscape with limited FDA-approved holistic therapies, finding an effective, non-pharmaceutical option is remarkable. For Sioux Falls residents, an exciting new alternative has arrived.
Midwest Hyperbarics introduces the transformative power of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), a treatment designed to supercharge the body’s natural healing abilities. The process is straightforward: patients relax in a comfortable, pressurized chamber—two to three times greater than atmospheric pressure—while breathing 100% oxygen for 60 to 90 minutes. This significantly increases oxygen levels in the plasma, allowing it to penetrate damaged tissues more effectively. The results? Reduced inflammation, enhanced cell regeneration, and accelerated recovery from injuries, surgeries, and chronic conditions. Simply put, HBOT ignites the body’s self-healing capabilities.
According to co-owners Nicole and Dr. Daniel Todd, “The decision to open Midwest Hyperbarics came from our firsthand experience with the incredible benefits of HBOT. After using an inhome chamber and witnessing its positive impact, we realized Sioux Falls lacked access to this transformative therapy. It was disheartening to see people traveling long distances for treatment. We felt strongly that our community deserved local access to HBOT, which inspired us to open the clinic.” Nicole adds, “One of the reasons HBOT is so powerful is that it relies on oxygen alone—no pharmaceuticals.”
Daniel Todd MD, FACS & Owner; Nicole Todd, Owner & Chamber Technician; Jada Hieb DNP, APRN, FNP-BC
BENEFITS OF HBOT
• Boosts Immune Response
• Enhances Healing and Recovery
• Improves Circulation
A key mechanism behind HBOT’s effectiveness is the hyperoxic-hypoxic phenomenon. When exposed to high levels of oxygen and pressure, the body perceives cellular injury or stress—even in the absence of actual damage. This ‘trick’ stimulates the body’s natural healing response. Essentially, the fluctuating oxygen and pressure create a hypoxic-like state in the tissues, even though oxygen is abundant. This paradoxical signal prompts cells to produce growth factors and regenerative agents, accelerating healing and recovery.
Clinic nurse practitioner Jada Hieb adds, “HBOT also significantly increases stem cell mobilization— potentially up to eight times the normal rate. Stem cells are crucial for repairing and regenerating damaged tissues, making HBOT especially beneficial for patients with chronic wounds, neurological conditions, or injuries.”
To explore how HBOT could transform your life, visit midwesthyperbarics.com or call 605.743.0402 to schedule a free 15-minute consultation. n

When the New Year comes around, we hear more about “vision”, “dreams”, and “goals”. Those words can feel so big, grandiose, and maybe even intimidating. But dreams don’t have to be big. They might be something like spending more time with your grandkids, transforming your kitchen into a space with more room to make lefsa, or getting that knee replaced so you can take the dog for a walk.
Whatever “dreams” mean to you, we are honored to help create financial plans that serve as tools to help you live a life full of meaning. Finances are just numbers, but when you couple numbers with dreams that inspire you, that’s where the magic happens.
