Formed deep within the Earth billions of years ago, these finite and unique natural wonders are the oldest objects you will ever touch. Natural diamonds provide employment, education, and healthcare for local communities from the Northwest Territories of Canada to Botswana in Southern Africa and protect vulnerable ecosystems for the future.

What is Hyperbarics Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

It increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry, allowing oxygen to reach damaged tissues more effectively. While in the chamber, you breathe 100% pure oxygen under pressure which infuses oxygen into your cells. Excitingly, this increases your circulating stem cells—up to eight times their normal levels!

These stem cells are critical for regeneration, stimulates the body’s natural healing processes, reduces inflammation, and helps fight infections. Altogether, HBOT offers a powerful, multifaceted approach to healing and rejuvenation.

“For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord.

– Jeremiah 29:11-14

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

– 1 Peter 1: 3-5

New Year New You!

YOUR FUN GUIDE TO CRUSHING 2025!

As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, the magic unfolds. People worldwide raise their champagne flutes and toast their hopes for the new year. But amid the cheers and confetti lies a powerful tradition: the New Year’s resolution. Making resolutions dates back nearly 4,000 years ago to ancient Babylon. And while the practice has evolved, at its essence it’s still about setting goals for a brighter future.

Today’s research shows that 1 in 3 of us make resolutions each year, but a staggering 80% of those resolutions are abandoned by February. In fact, 23% of people give up the very first week! The most popular goals? Getting fit, losing weight, and saving money.

So, why do these resolutions matter? Research shows that people who make resolutions are 10 times more likely to achieve their goals than those who don’t. It’s a chance to crystallize our dreams; to reflect, refocus, and reignite our passions.

But what happens when resolve fails? If you find your resolutions slipping away, don’t despair! Here are strategies to get you back on track:

BREAK IT DOWN: Instead of one grand goal, create smaller, achievable milestones. If you resolve to “get fit,” break it down into manageable steps, like committing to a 30-minute walk three times a week. Celebrate each small victory, and you’ll stay motivated!

MAKE IT A GAME: Resolutions can be fun. Transform your goals into a game! For example, if the goal is to get fit, create a points system. Earn points for a workout, and lose points for each donut! After a month, reward yourself with something great – like new workout gear.

GET CREATIVE: Resolutions can feel rigid. Rather than, “I must lose 30 pounds,” try, “I’ll make one healthy new recipe each week.” This keeps the goal fresh and allows you to explore new things.

FIND YOUR TRIBE: Nothing beats the power of community. Find friends who want to tackle resolutions with you. Meet over coffee - or wine - for weekly check-ins and cheer each other on. Accountability can be a game-changer, and sharing your journey with others can reenergize your commitment.

REFLECT AND REVISE: Resolutions aren’t set in stone. Life is dynamic, and priorities may change. If a goal feels overwhelming or irrelevant, adjust it. Instead of “run a marathon,” try “focus on a healthy lifestyle.” A slight shift can make the goal more reachable.

Remember, it’s not about being perfect; it’s about progress. Adjust your resolutions as needed and celebrate every small step forward. Cheers to 2025! You’ve got this! n

TIPS FOR SUCCESS IN 2025:

1. REFLECT ON THE PAST YEAR: What went well? What didn’t? Who in your circle is helping you achieve your goals – and who isn’t?

2. VISUALIZE YOUR IDEAL LIFE: Jot down what you want for 2025 in relationships, health, career, money, personal growth, and spirituality.

3. SET GOALS: Make them measurable. Create a timeline, and outline your goals for 2025, and 5 years down the road.

4. FIND YOUR WHY: Why is your goal important to you? This will help you develop a deeper commitment to getting that goal to the finish line!

OFFERING JEWELRY AND SERVICE THAT IS A CUT ABOVE THE REST

Alon Spektor, owner of the Diamond Room by Spektor in Sioux Falls, SD, has spent 40 years in the diamond business. His passion is finding the best quality diamonds for his customers.

“There isn’t a diamond Alon can’t find,” says inventory manager Chris Harms.

The Diamond Room is a full-service jewelry store with in-house goldsmiths. They offer the largest diamond selection in the Sioux Empire area - as well as jewelry maintenance, engraving, and appraisals. With an estimated 2,500 customizable engagement rings, “the options are endless,” says marketing specialist Emily Arteman, “there’s something for every age and every budget.” They also provide custom designs made in-house. “We can build a ring from the ground up,” says Chris. When redesigning or creating a new ring, they complete the entire process with the customer. Alon started his own

wholesale diamond business in 1984 out of his apartment. In 1996, he opened The Diamond Room with Dave Anderson, who is now retired. They are now entirely employee-managed.

“All of us have our own niches,” says Emily, “but we all have the same goal.” Whether they specialize in sales, marketing, or gemology, everyone at The Diamond Room is passionate about building customer loyalty.

“We get to participate in the monumental moments of people’s lives,” Chris adds, “We have a lot of customers that we’ve known for years and now their kids come here. We strive to be a friendly experience while creating relationships with our customers.” A big part of those lasting relationships is their commitment to no-pressure sales. No one at The Diamond Room works on commission - their goal is to provide an educational, relaxing experience. “We don’t pressure

people to buy anything on the spot,” says Gemologist Kyle Kopischke, “We expect multiple visits from our customers for things like bridal jewelry because it’s a big decision.”

According to The Diamond Room specialists, the biggest part of purchasing a diamond is the quality of the 4 C’s - color, clarity, carat weight, and cut. Alon inspects and hand-picks diamonds for each customer & prioritizes each customer’s requests. Additionally, he creates in-house jewelry with quality diamonds for any budget.

The Diamond Room has been voted Sioux Falls’ Local Best in Jewelry for 18 consecutive years and the #1 Jewelry Store for the past four years. They are also involved in the community through contributing to local organizations such as The Boys & Girls Club, Sanford Legends, and Make-a-Wish. The Diamond Room will host a holiday open house on December 5th from 5-8 pm. Stop by to visit, fill out a holiday wish list, and celebrate Alon Spektor’s 40 years in the diamond business. Extended holiday hours begin December 8th. For more information visit the.diamondroom.com or call them at 605-362-0008.

HYDRATION HELPS

Keeping your skin comfy while it’s cold outside

Winter weather in the Midwest is dry, dry dry. The humidity drops, the air is cold, and moisture is seemingly pulled from our skin, resulting in uncomfortable, dry skin. Skin discomforts can range from moderate scaliness and flaking to severe itchiness. No one likes being uncomfortable with dry skin day in and out, and dry skin with cracks can leave us more susceptible to infections and illness. It is vitally important to maintain a healthy and hydrated skin barrier during the winter months to keep our skin comfortable and healthy.

Most importantly, make sure you’re applying moisture after cleansing. EVERY TIME! Especially for facial skin, a gentle, unscented moisturizer specialized for your skin type is imperative. While an ointment-based moisturizer is usually best, some might prefer a cream-style moisturizer to combat potential oil build-up for oily skin types. Make sure you’re cleansing with a gentle facial cleanser, as harsher soaps tend to strip our skin of natural oils that help us stay moisturized, but also help our skin protect itself.

For the rest of your body, after bathing, showering, or hand-washing - apply a moisturizer - EVERY TIME! An after-shower lotion can be extremely relaxing and will help keep your skin from feeling dry and tight. If you’re struggling with particularly difficult dry skin that includes itching or cracked skin, use a gentle and unscented lotion. When itchiness and dryness are painfully bothersome try a daytime antihistamine or hydrocortisone cream. Be sure to see a dermatologist if your dry skin symptoms are persistent and severe.

Finally, don’t take super-hot showers or baths. This type of heat prevents hydration. Night-time treatments, humidifiers, drinking lots of water, and using occlusives like shea and cocoa butter can all help amplify your hydration. Beat the skin dehydration and keep yourself comfortable, smooth, and hydrated during the winter! n

Colors & Fabrics

The Holiday season is filled with get-togethers. We visit with friends, family, and co-workers to celebrate, find joy, and share precious moments and memories as the year ebbs to a close. With numerous events on the horizon, we will need several looks to put together. Who wants to be caught wearing the same outfit to every event? To prepare, let’s look at some of this holiday season’s hottest colors, textures, and feelings to create the perfect outfits.

Naturally, we have the traditional classic holiday colors collection pieces, but let’s be surprised by adding fun and flashy tones to the mix. Let’s ease into it with gorgeous jewel tones. Typical for this year’s season, we will be seeing bright cherry colors along with deep and warmer garnets, displaying a variety of tones and saturations on the rack this holiday season. Verdant forest greens will pair nicely with navy blues and the classic neutrals of burnished browns, steely grays, and creamy whites. The fun stuff comes next - some sinewy candlelight yellows and bright azure blues will be the stunning and bold choices to cut through any dreary weather hovering over the holidays. Other shades of blue will be the show’s star with pale blues popping up alongside soft, peachy pinks and gentle oranges.

Finally, keep an eye out for the following fabrics. Wool, of course, is a popular choice due to its capacity for warmth. However, the surprising and fun addition of linen is making its way to the racks this year. Linen has a gentle texture that creates a lovely appearance that will make your monochrome outfits stand out. For a softer, more casual look, cotton and satin remain at top form. Hot Fashion is trending towards a little less flashy glitz and a bit more soft glam.

Enjoy this holiday season by stepping out in your thoughtfully curated outfits that are stylish, fresh, festive, and dazzling! n

Building Hope in the Dominican Republic: A Mission of Faith and Unity

In late September, I landed in the Dominican Republic (DR) for my first mission trip. While the country boasts a $1 billion tourist industry, 40% of Dominicans live in poverty, surviving on less than $1.50 a day. Unemployment stands at 60%, and many families struggle to afford food, clean water, and safe shelter. Some, tragically, are even forced to sell their children into slavery, contributing to the country’s $9.5 billion human trafficking industry.

These heartbreaking issues motivated me to join a mission organized by my Ransom Church community in partnership with Casas por Cristo. Working alongside the Dominican church, Casas por Cristo’s volunteers help provide the gift of safe, secure housing and share the truth of God’s love with the family who receives the house and the entire community.

As the plane touched down, I was thrilled to finally fulfill a childhood dream of going on a mission trip! That excitement quickly turned to worry about how I’d connect with the family and community since I don’t speak Spanish. Then, just as quickly, anticipation took over as I prepared to be the hands and feet of Jesus in a new place. Throughout the many emotional peaks and valleys of the experience, what I felt most often was peace. No

matter what we encountered, I knew the Holy Spirit was hard at work with us.

The community welcomed us as if we were family, their kindness and faith transcending any language gaps. Through smiles, nods, and laughter, our shared belief in God united us more powerfully than words ever could. They brought tools, food, and an infectious spirit of cooperation. Working side by side, every swing of the hammer carried weight—not only because it was exhausting work in 90° heat but because of what it represented. Their dedication and gratitude inspired us all.

By the end of the trip, a sturdy house stood where there was once only dirt, a testament to the power of shared faith and the incredible bonds formed when people come together for a common cause. More than just walls and a roof, we wove a tapestry of faith, hope, and friendship that will last well beyond our time in the DR. As my first build it will forever hold a special place in my heart, but I know it’s not the last as I’ll be planning many more missions’ trips in the future!

A special thanks to my family, my workplace, my friends, and countless others for the financial and emotional support.

during and after the holidays

The holiday season is robust in gatherings to spend joyful moments making memories with family and friends. Maybe this involves a lot of home cooking - and while that is delicious and fun, it can be a lot of work! Amidst all the hustle and bustle of the season, it is essential to take time to breathe. When you catch a break, even after the holiday season, when everyone takes time to relax, you’ll probably yearn for some easy comfort in a good meal. It’s easy to convince yourself to stay home, but winter keeps us cooped up, and it is difficult to remember that getting out is just as important as home time. Whether it’s a familiar restaurant for its comfort food, or going out to explore a new option you haven’t tried before, dining out is a great way to seek fun and ease amidst the chilly weather and exhaustion of the busy, albeit joyous season.

Perhaps some alone time isn’t what you desire—maybe you like getting out, keeping going, and want to maximize your time with friends. Post-holiday shopping is a great way to spend time outside the home - take part in those end-of-year/beginning-of-the-new-year sales - and keep the sense of holiday joy alive. Being out and getting hungry can leave you in a difficult position if you aren’t prepared, but we’ve got you covered. Take a pick of some local dining options and step outdoors for a warm, delicious meal. You deserve it! n

SPACE TO GROW A Beautiful

Young professional Samantha Jennings has created a beautiful, contemporary yet warm and cozy home for herself and her fur baby Ella

Story and photos by Margaret Pennock

Ayoung veteran homeowner, Samantha Jennings has created a comfortable and stylish nest she has called home for the past four years. Just turning 27, she is proud of the steps she has taken to purchase a home that fits her lifestyle, and one that provides an admirable outlook for her future finances.

According to Samantha, “In August of 2020, I knew I would be graduating college with my bachelor’s degree from Dakota State University in December. I thought, what a perfect time to find a place to call my own.” She remembers, “My older sister, who is my best friend, and I were driving around Sioux Falls and stumbled upon a townhouse that was being built. We contacted our friend who is a realtor and she got me a tour the next day. I found it the perfect space for myself and my little Yorkiepoo, Ella.”

Growing up in Hartford, SD, she had no desire to move away because her immediate family on her mother’s side still resides around the area along with all her friends. At the time of her home purchase, she had been living with her sister, in a neighborhood not far from her current home, so she knew she liked living in the West side of town. Her sister, who also invested in a home in her early twenties, encouraged Samantha to do the same.

As a hard-working student with a demanding part-time job and also on the hunt for a full-time career post-graduation, Samantha knew staying within her means was paramount. “When I was looking for a house, I knew that I wanted to have a space to call my own that had at least two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and an attached garage. But I also wanted to make sure I could afford my first place and not go over my head on expectations that I could not afford.”

Fortunately for her, interest rates were very low and pricing was affordable. “I wanted to invest in my future and know that this would not be my forever home, but that when I go to sell I will make money to put forth in a future home. Thankfully, I was fortunate enough to buy a brand new townhouse where I could put my own touches to it and be the first to live in it!”

Another extremely important factor for Samantha was that she had no desire to buy a fixer-upper. “I don’t like projects,” she laughs. Samantha’s townhome is a modest, nicely done, cozy, open-plan two-story with a compact but private backyard. She notes, “I absolutely love having two levels, so it breaks up the space and gives more of a home feeling. I really like having my bedrooms and laundry on one level and my living room, dining room, and kitchen on another level.”

After moving in (with the help of her family), Samantha personalized her turn-key new home with small touches such as painted accent walls that her mother helped with and a new chandelier for her dining space that her father hung for her. In addition, her sister who she credits with excellent taste, assisted in helping her to select her furnishings. Topping it off, she fenced the backyard to give Ella a small and fantastic space to roam.

She shares, “Because they were still building my townhome when I purchased it, I had the opportunity to select a few features like the mirrors and some light fixtures which was fun to be a part of the process. They had chosen upgraded designs that made my home a little more unique which I absolutely loved!”

A clean, well-organized space is incredibly important for Samantha who loves to have friends and family over to entertain spontaneously. “I grew up always wanting my room or house to be ready for anyone to come over to. Over the years I have kept the traits of being neat and organized because I love having my house ready any time for friends or family to come over! It puts my mind at ease knowing that my house is picture-perfect, but feels like a home too. I feel it’s one less thing to worry about a messy home when everything is clean and has its place.”

Decorating for the holidays is one of her favorite things to do. “I have found some of my favorite decorations over the years and it’s so fun being able to display them around my townhome and enjoy them over the seasons. When my family or friends come over, I always get compliments on how my house looks, and it just makes me feel good knowing that I was able to buy unique decor pieces on my own. I love being able to host gatherings at my place, especially around the holidays.”

A very special space in her home is the spare bedroom which Samantha has made into her “traveling room.” This is where she has created a map of the United States on the wall to visually share her goal of traveling to all states, of which she has already visited 30. Most recently, she and her sister spent this past summer traveling Europe together.

“I truly am so blessed to have a townhouse to call my home and find it completely empowering to live alone. I am a single, 27-yearold who has been living on her own for almost four years and pays for everything by herself. I’ve invested my money into a home rather than renting and not having anything to show for it. Creating a vision board and sticking to goals you set for yourself can be very obtainable as I’m someone who figured out how to achieve my dreams, so you can too!”

TODAY IS THE DAY to start on your kitchen project! Visit the expanded showroom at Today’s StarMark Custom Cabinetry in north Sioux Falls and start your dream kitchen project today. Our friendly design experts will help you discover exactly what you want for your home.

To dress it up for the holidays, she has created a “traveling Christmas tree.” “This is where I have showcased ornaments as well as pictures, postcards, hotel keys, train tickets, etc., from my European adventure this past summer.” She explains, “Each ornament has a special memory, the macaroons are sentimental because we had them while we were in Paris, France. The camera is because we took thousands of pictures and the backpacks are because we carried everything in backpacks. The airplane and train signify some of the ways we traveled. The sunflower is because we saw so many sunflower fields, but also because we visited the Vincent van Gogh Museum which houses his famous Sunflowers paintings. The taco ornament is because we had the best tacos in Croatia and the postcards showcase some of the different places that we visited. The Pastamania paper is from when we took a pastamaking class while we were in Florence, Italy. I absolutely love my traveling tree - I can reminisce on all the travels I was able to do with my sister.”

Regarding future projects, Samantha says, “I may add a tiled backsplash but I really don’t like projects and I am really happy with my home the way it is. It’s warm and cozy but contemporary at the same time, and that’s what I was really aspiring to achieve.” n

VIBRANT VISIONS:

Art that inspires a joyful retirement

EARLIER THIS YEAR, Richelle Hofer, founder and wealth advisor at Impact Wealth Management, launched her book “Retire with Joy!”

The financial advisors at Impact know that while money is the foundation of retirement, you can’t find joy in money alone.

“Retire with Joy!” has evolved into much more than a book. From their newly launched retreats to engaging panel discussions, Impact Wealth Management is committed to helping retirees financially and mentally prepare for a joyfilled retirement.

Recently Richelle and local artist Jamie Smith collaborated to create four fun and original art pieces that remind us that retirement is not an end, but a new beginning.

“The connection to people was a driving force in this project. I loved trying to picture what I would want my life to be like” says Jamie. “In a way, I had the opportunity to live multiple adventures vicariously through my paintings. A nice reminder that the future can be whatever we want it to be. Age does not limit dreams.”

Jamie is an emerging artist living in the Omaha metro of Nebraska. With no formal training, she began creating with acrylics and dabbling with oil pastels. With nine years as a Spanish teacher, influences of her profession are reflected in her works. Between the vibrant palettes and everyday subject matter, she strives to drive out darkness and welcome a visual euphoria.

“My inspiration is drawn from my personal experiences/ memories, goals, and strongly influenced by the Latinx

community. Traveling has been key to shaping who I am today as a person as well as an artist. If I have a place I want to visit, be it traveling back in time or manifesting a future goal, I paint it. I could go on forever, but life! Life in general is my inspiration, all of the seemingly boring and uninteresting moments is what I want to “take a snapshot” of because we never truly know how important/life changing the “insignificant” truly is.”

The community is invited to engage with the book and art at any of Impact’s upcoming “Retire with Joy!” events.

TULA® SYSTEM QUICK, PAINLESS, EFFECTIVE

Midwest ENT & Allergy revolutionizes traditional ear tube surgery with an ultra-easy office procedure. Approximately 700,000 ear tube surgeries are performed annually in the United States, making it the most common pediatric surgery requiring general anesthesia. Unfortunately, this can be a traumatic experience for children and their parents.

Now, an innovative procedure available exclusively in Sioux Falls through Midwest ENT & Allergy offers a transformative alternative. Six months ago, Dr. Greg Danielson introduced the TULA® System to his patient, Beckett, age 8. Beckett had recently been admitted to the Emergency Room due to intense pain caused by recurrent fluid in his middle ear, despite having undergone ear tube surgery at a younger age. For his mother, Lacey, the thought of putting her son through surgery and anesthesia again was difficult.

Lacey shares, “Beckett’s tubes fell out, and he continued to have fluid behind his eardrums. Dr. Danielson explained that this procedure has been used successfully in Texas for some time, which was super reassuring. He was thorough in explaining it and left the decision up to us. For our child, it was the best choice because of his reaction to anesthesia.”

The TULA® System offers the benefits of traditional ear tube surgery for children six months and older without the need for hospital surgery or anesthesia. Another advantage is its cost-effectiveness,

Dr. Greg Danielson and Beckett
Beckett and his family

requiring only a single clinic visit. In this straightforward procedure, the child’s eardrum is numbed while they play or watch videos with their parents in the room. The physician then inserts a tube in less than half a second. The entire procedure typically takes around 35 minutes and requires no recovery time for the child.

After deciding to proceed with the TULA® System, which required just an office visit and zero downtime for her son, Lacey and Beckett couldn’t be happier with their choice. Beckett smiles, “I got tubes, and I was the first person in the state to get this kind, so my friends thought that was pretty cool.”

Lacey adds, “The billing and accounting departments were also super easy to work with, especially since this was the first time the procedure had been performed in South Dakota, and our insurance had never seen that code before. They were proactive about contacting our insurance agency, making it easy on our end.”

Dr. Danielson notes, “The TULA® System is a great option for many children who can sit through the procedure. It’s much less disruptive for the child and the parents, and we’re seeing excellent results.”

If you’re interested in learning whether the TULA® System might be suitable for your child, call Midwest ENT & Allergy at 605336-3503 to schedule a consultation. n

“The lack of anesthesia alone was a game changer. You don’t have to get up early to go to the hospital, and parents can be there for the entire procedure. It’s so much easier and more cost-effective.”

WALKING FOR YOUR HEALTH

As the weather cools down and the days grow shorter, it can be tempting to hunker down indoors and wait for spring. But winter doesn’t have to mean the end of your exercise routine. Walking is a fantastic way to stay active, no matter the season. It’s one of the simplest yet most effective ways to improve overall health. Whether you’re strolling through your neighborhood, hitting the treadmill at the gym, or doing laps around the mall, walking offers numerous health benefits and can easily be adapted to fit your lifestyle and the changing weather.

FIND A WALKING BUDDY

One of the best ways to stay motivated is to find a walking buddy. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or even a pet, having someone to walk with makes the activity more enjoyable and holds you accountable. Plus, walking with a partner can be a great way to catch up and socialize, turning exercise into something you look forward to rather than a chore.

EMBRACE THE OUTDOORS

Being outdoors is refreshing, even in the colder months. Walking in the crisp winter air can invigorate your senses and improve your mood. Layer up with warm clothing and take a walk around the

neighborhood. For a change of scenery, head to one of the many parks and nature trails Sioux Falls has to offer - Good Earth State Park, Beaver Creek Nature Area, Great Bear Recreation Park, and Newton Hills State Park are just a few great local options. Fall is the perfect time to explore the trails and soak in the beautiful changing leaves.

INDOOR OPTIONS

As winter deepens, outdoor walks can become tricky. Consider indoor options if the South Dakota elements are too much to handle. Many gyms offer treadmills, indoor tracks, and group walking classes that can keep you active without braving the elements. For those who prefer to keep things cost-free, or if you’re looking for a different indoor experience, the mall can be an excellent alternative. You can take advantage of the climate-controlled environment and even enjoy window shopping as you go.

Walking is a versatile and accessible exercise that can help you maintain your health all year round. By exploring different walking options and finding what works for you, you’ll be well-equipped to keep moving, no matter the weather. So, lace up your walking shoes and get moving—your body and mind will thank you! n

Happy, Healthy, PAWLIDAYS

The holidays, I mean PAWlidays, are approaching quickly! I know how excited we are to have family and friends over to celebrate while enjoying the décor you spent so much time on. I am here to be both your and your pet’s advocate to help prepare them for holiday visitors and the potentially toxic décors they could get into.

Anxiety in our pets is typically portrayed behaviorally. For example, backing away from a stranger, showing aggression, destructive behavior, restlessness, barking/meowing, or eliminating in the house are all tell-tale signs that they are uncomfortable. Also, observing their body language will provide a huge clue on how they are feeling. For dogs, there are some signs of discomfort when they ask for more space: licking their lips with their ears back, hair standing on end, growling, hiding, mouth closed and still body, brow furrowed, head turned, dilated pupils, and the base of their tail is lower than their spine (or tucked). If you notice these signs, move between your guests and your dog to stop the approach. Direct your dog’s attention to a positive experience by rewarding them with treats. For instance, you can throw treats across the room when a guest enters to distract your dog and enlighten their initial encounter. Also, encourage your guest to toss a dog treat to build trust while maintaining a few feet of distance. If your dog loves to jump on your guests, tell your guests to only pet your dog when their paws are all on the ground — not when jumping or lunging. To encourage this behavior, try scattering treats on the ground or holding a handful (treats) on your dog’s nose to manage jumping. For our cat friends, some signs of aggression might include; tail lashing/thumping, shifting of body position, skin twitching, and direct stares. It may sound strange, but some cats simply don’t enjoy being petted. If your cat is one of them, instruct your guests to allow them to sit on

their lap or beside them on the couch. Not petting will build trust and allow them to feel safe around your guests. If none of these tricks work for your pet, please consult your veterinarian for the best anti-anxiety medication. Some medications can be given on an “as needed” basis for stressful events (gabapentin, trazodone, melatonin). If your pet is constantly experiencing fear or stress, look into additional medication options for everyday medication.

While the holidays add excitement to the long winter months, we cannot forget about indoor and outdoor toxins frequently seen during this time of year. Holiday plants can be harmful to your pet, and here is a list that I would recommend keeping out of the house: poinsettias, lilies, holly, mistletoe, or yew plants. Some signs of toxin ingestion of these plants include - vomiting, diarrhea, collapse, ataxia (walking difficulty), seizures, and even death. Many holiday bouquets include these plants and I recommend thoroughly inspecting them before bringing them into your home. I know that holiday decorations such as tinsel, ribbon, and twine, add that tempting sparkle or glitter, but, these items can become lodged in your pet’s intestinal tract and cause a linear foreign body to develop. Treating this condition requires costly, invasive surgery. Furthermore, please keep electrical cords from the tree lights out of reach as they can accidentally electrocute a pet with a penchant for chewing. Lastly, ornaments can look very tempting for your pet. Broken ornaments can lead to glass shards that lacerate the skin and mouth or may damage vital internal organs. Please hang decorations as high up on the tree to avoid these altercations.

If you believe your pet has ingested any item of concern, it is important to call your veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline, a 24/7 animal poison control center, at 1-800-213-6680 right away to have the risk of poisoning assessed. n

Encompass Wellness: CREATING

A PATH TO OPTIMAL HEALTH

MARY J. JORDAN is a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner and owner of Encompass Wellness in Sioux Falls and Dakota Dunes, SD. Mary has more than two decades of providing healthcare within the community. She has made it her life’s passion to find the root cause of health problems with a preventative approach using functional medicine. She specializes in all natural hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for men and women. When hormones are optimized, we can reverse many ailments that we’ve accepted as a consequence of aging.

For women, losing testosterone causes fatigue, weight gain, joint pain, hot flashes, night sweats, brain fog, moodiness, and low libido. Men experience fatigue, weight gain, decreased muscle strength, changes in sleep, ED, and a decreased libido. Each patient has customized treatment plan based on labs and symptoms. The HRT is bioidentical to what the body makes in the form of a pellet that is the size of a grain of rice. The pellets are placed subcutaneously under the skin. Many start feeling relief of symptoms within 1-2 weeks.

Encompass Wellness emphasizes personalized care, using high-quality products and the latest technologies to ensure optimal results for their patients. The newest additions to the clinic are Vtone, FormaV, and Morpheus 8V which are used for vaginal rejuvenation. The Vtone uses electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) to strengthen and tone the pelvic floor to eliminate urinary incontinence and frequency. A single treatment is equivalent to 22,000 Kegels. Incontinence affects many women and Vtone is a simple solution to an embarrassing issue. When paired with FormaV we can address elasticity, sensitivity, and vaginal dryness all in one visit. The treatments are painless with little downtime.

Mary has years of experience with medical weight loss medications as she cared for many diabetics with the medications before they were FDA approved for weight loss. She has created a comprehensive weight loss program that includes in-depth labs to see if the body is working against you. Obtaining a healthy weight reduces the risk for many diseases,” explains Mary. We utilize GLP1’s like semaglutide and tirzepatide along with

Giving Everything PHELPS JANA JANA

With eyes wide open, Jana Phelps has overcome fears and weaknesses to devote her mind, body, and soul to helping and healing. Meeting Jana Phelps, you might never guess that she has chosen to immerse herself in a world filled with desperation, need, and sometimes sheer hopelessness. As an RN-BSN and a sound healing practitioner, she has dedicated over 30 years to healthcare, specializing in fields ranging from pediatrics and oncology to forensic and missionary nursing. Jana is also a mother of five adult children, a grandmother to two granddaughters and a grandson, and the wife of her supportive husband, Mark—on the surface, an “average American woman.”

But beneath her friendly, approachable demeanor and radiant smile lies the heart, grit, and passion of a warrior. Jana has given her life to missionary work, venturing into war-torn countries and poverty-stricken regions where starvation is an everyday reality.

HER JOURNEY BEGAN as a young, ambitious woman from a small farming town in Michigan. Working three jobs to pay her way through school, Jana was intent on a path of biomedical research before realizing her calling was more hands-on, leading her to nursing. Struggling to balance it all, she experienced an unforgettable act of kindness one night while waitressing—a customer offered to cover her tuition if she promised to be the best nurse she could be.

“I didn’t believe it but thanked him profusely. I remember thinking it was all a dream and that it couldn’t be true. Who on earth would do that? I certainly had never experienced that level of kindness and generosity in my life.” She recalls, “But the next day, I got a call from the registrar’s office stating that my nursing tuition for the entirety of my enrollment had been paid in full. I cried and was so thankful that someone saw me, saw my hard work and dedication, and took the time to tell me so and to go even further to give me a hand up, this is what propelled me even deeper into missions. I went on missions, but this gentleman saw a mission opportunity right in front of him. He developed a relationship and seized an opportunity. He, as well as my church, and my nursing school, taught me to do the very same. I wanted to be a human being who sees, really sees others for who they are and what they bring to this life.”

SINCE THAT PIVOTAL MOMENT, Jana has dedicated herself to selflessly serving others. “I attended a Methodist hospital nursing program where volunteering and mission work were central values. We were taught to care for people beyond their immediate health needs, looking for ways to help on a deeper level by addressing mind, body, and spirit, both in and outside the hospital.”

Upon graduation, Jana leaped at an offer to join a year-long medical mission in an inpoverished nation. That experience ignited a passion for missions that has driven her ever since. Over the years, she has traveled to seven countries on medical, disaster, humanitarian, and relational missions, often with well-known organizations, small groups, or even on her own.

These experiences brought her face-to-face with the hard realities of the world. “Pain, suffering, and poverty were no longer just stories on the news. I saw the need and devastation up close. These were real people, with names and families, in real, devastated communities. I held them in my arms, listened to their cries, and watched them pray for their daily bread. The learning I gained from this immersion is unlike any other.”

A LIFELONG LEARNER, Jana has taken her science-based education and blended it with holistic practices she discovered on her travels, leading her to open Perfect Zen Sound Healing, a holistic clinic focused on wellness through sound and vibrational healing. “Perfect Zen is a holistic sound and vibrational healing clinic that promotes

Dr. Brad Hruby

wellness through the use of vibration and healing frequencies from a variety of sound healing instruments. Sound healing is an effective and natural way to heal the mental and physical body. It can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions and may help to reduce symptoms related to pain and inflammation, help to trigger the relaxation response, promote nervous system rebalancing, improve PTSD symptoms, improve sleep, reduce blood pressure, improve circulation, alleviate symptoms of chronic stress, and release and harmonize the mind, body, soul, and spirit.”

She explains, “I discovered sound healing through my mission work in countries without access to traditional Western medicine. Many communities relied on sound and vibration for healing, and I saw its benefits firsthand. I imagined how powerful it could be to combine Western medicine with sound healing for whole-body health. Watching people heal from the inside out and witnessing the positive impact on their health brings me immense fulfillment.”

DESPITE THE REWARDS, Jana’s journey has not been without challenges for her and her family. She went through a difficult divorce in 2013 and still regrets not always being as available to her children as she wished. But the experience has made her family stronger. “My children may not have all followed me to foreign lands, but they are missionaries in their own way. They build relationships, show compassion, stand up for what they believe in, and strive to make a difference. If they are doing that then I know the rest will come.”

Although “settling down” isn’t on the horizon, Jana cherishes her time with loved ones. “I enjoy every moment with my husband, children, and grandchildren—they bring me such joy. In my free time, I love camping, hiking, biking, kayaking, scuba diving, and traveling. I’m also an avid reader and a bit of an adrenaline junkie, whether skydiving or exploring high peaks.” n

Impacting Others through Acts of Kindness

Allene Flora shares her love for her community and finds a new purpose through the Vittles for Vets program

Helping others has always come naturally to Allene Flora. Growing up in a large family, she learned to share and to show kindness as a way of life. Over the years, she has worked with multiple nonprofit organizations to support those in her community who need extra assistance. Additionally, she and her husband, Doug, have welcomed many foster and adopted children into their loving homes. Sadly, they suffered the devastating loss of their son, Roman, in a car accident five years ago—a tragedy that has since inspired Allene to turn grief into action.

Now retired, Allene embraces the freedom to help others through a new program she has created called Vittles for Vets. The idea came to life when her passion for helping, love of cooking, and desire for a new purpose aligned, allowing her to partner with others to make a difference for veterans experiencing food insecurity.

make these as fresh or frozen meals that can easily be reheated in a microwave, which almost all of these veterans have access to,” she explains.

In addition to support from the Disabled American Veterans, she has received donations of wild game from friends she previously worked with at South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks. “It’s rewarding to provide elk, pheasant, and other wild game that I can turn into casseroles and soups for veterans who truly need and appreciate it,” Allene shares.

Reflecting on her work, she adds, “My son really wanted to serve in the military, but he wasn’t able to. I think that’s part of why I feel so compelled to help these veterans. He would have loved to see me doing this.” n

In 2022, the Food Research & Action Center reported that over 11 percent of veterans aged 18 to 64 lived in households facing food insecurity. According to the VA, veterans are 7 percent more likely to experience food insecurity than non-veterans.

What's New: MAKERS EXCHANGE

Reinventing retail at Makers Exchange – Best of all, it’s just in time for holiday shopping!

The holidays will be exciting this year for Thelma Busk - because her small business, Dakota Faye, finally has a home.

“For 30 years, I have worked on my own selling vintage home décor that includes florals and repurposed woodcrafts,” said the Dell Rapids native. “It has been terrific to now have my own space and have my products on display daily. I am especially looking forward to the Christmas season.”

Thelma joined 70 other vendors and creatives who have set up independently owned businesses at Makers Exchange, located in Tea at 102 E. Venture Place west of Interstate 29 and the Tea Interchange, Makers Exchange is a market proud to have local vendors displaying their products. It opened in mid-September and will be open year-round.

Makers Exchange is a unique business concept for locallymade merchandise explains Co-Founder Kate Bartell Nowak.

“We showcase a diverse number of local makers, crafters, artists, vendors, and food producers,” said Kate. “Each individual business has its own small space and its own design. This unique shopping option brings South Dakota charm together under one roof. These small business owners have come together as a community to sell their unique and authentic creations and products.”

In addition to a retail market, Makers Exchange will feature a café. The coffee shop will feature Swiss-made espresso machines and locally roasted coffee from Parable Coffee Roasting Company in Tea and homemade waffles using Dakota Don’s artisan waffle mix. The café side also provides display space for local food producers, including bakery and other food items.

Kate said the idea for Makers Exchange began in October 2023. As co-owner, she is one of six families who partnered in an ownership group for the business. The 10,000-squarefoot barn design offers a spacious setting for independently owned, local businesses.

Passion defines these vendors says Kate. “They put their heart and soul into every detail of their products.”

A sampling of what you will find at Makers Exchange includes fresh and artificial florals, hats, jewelry, home décor, seasonal décor, women’s clothing, children’s clothing (including one vendor specializing in just boys’ clothing), hand-poured candles, gourmet pet treats, handmade greeting cards, furniture, decorative tumblers, wood signs, vintage and repurposed items, spice blends, toys and LED neon signs.

“We are excited about our new, growing business, especially during this holiday season. Our hope is to attract people looking for merchandise that is unique and want to support local businesses. We don’t just want it to be a place people come to shop, but a place where they experience the warmth of community, discover unique treasures, and feel good knowing they are supporting something special.”

Mark your calendar for December 7 from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. as Makers Exchange invites you to a European Christmas Market where you can enjoy an authentic, traditional holiday market inspired by the festive open-air Christkindl Markets in Europe. n
