Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
Partner up to build a healthy lifestyle
By Chellee Unruh
Have you ever heard the saying “two peas in a pod”? When it comes to your health, you and your partner can be just like that. Taking care of yourself individually is important, but working together to build healthy habits can strengthen your bond and boost your overall well-being.
Healthy relationships start with healthy bodies, so fuel your love story with nutritious meals. Ditch the pre-made items and team up to create a grocery list full of fresh, nourishing ingredients. Explore new recipes and turn meal prep into a fun date night activity. Even if dining out is your thing, research restaurants with healthy options and support each other in making positive choices. Bear in mind that healthy eating doesn’t have to be bland – it can be an adventure you embark on together!
Knowing that exercise is key to both physical and mental wellbeing, finding your fitness groove as a couple is also important. The key is to find activities you both enjoy. Whether it’s hitting the gym for a sweat session, going for scenic bike rides, or taking a couples’ dance class – make it a part of your routine, maybe even incorporating movement into your date nights with a hike or a playful game of badminton. Setting individual goals and checking in with each other adds a touch of friendly competition and keeps you both motivated.
You should also make prioritizing preventative care a team
effort. Regular check-ups and screenings are crucial for maintaining good health. Schedule your appointments together and support each other by attending them. Open communication is essential – openly discuss concerns and encourage each other to seek professional help if needed. Remember, being there for each other through health challenges strengthens your bond and fosters a sense of trust.
A healthy relationship goes beyond physical well-being; it also encompasses mental and emotional health. Create a safe space where you can openly communicate your feelings, concerns, and stressors. Find healthy ways to destress together, whether indulging in relaxing massages, practicing meditation, or simply enjoying quiet time in each other’s company. Don’t lose sight of the fact that offering encouragement, empathy, and understanding goes a long way in supporting each other through life’s challenges and victorious celebrations.
Building a healthy lifestyle as a couple requires commitment, communication, and collaboration. By prioritizing healthy eating, staying active together, supporting each other’s mental well-being, and scheduling regular check-ups, you’re not just investing in individual health, but in the longevity and happiness of your relationship. Remember, that when you prioritize health as a team, you’re building a stronger foundation for a future filled with love and well-being. n

Redefining Legacy: More than Money
The term “legacy” often evokes images of attorneys in expensive suits, stacks of legal documents, and financial strategies focused on distributing an estate. But the values, lessons, stories, and connections that define your life are so much more than that. Legacy is as much about instilling values, sharing life lessons, and building family bonds as it is finances. True legacy planning encompasses several key elements:
Financial: Money, investments, property.
Family: Family stories, traditions, heirlooms, and life lessons.
Professional: Family business planning, accomplishments, and contacts.
Societal: Contributions and giving back to the community.
Wisdom: Life experience and insights.
By broadening your definition of legacy, and engaging in open communication about financial values, concerns, and priorities, you can help ensure your family’s legacy is preserved and cherished. Start by bringing your family together for a few hours over a meal or setting aside time during a family vacation. Meet outside of a regular family gathering and have a loose agenda so everyone knows what to expect.
• Create a space where everyone feels comfortable discussing their views and experiences.
• Establish a few ground rules, such as everyone’s opinion matters, treat each other with respect, and don’t interrupt.
• Use questions and encourage storytelling to explore topics and build trust. Questions to help you facilitate conversation:
• If money wasn’t an issue, what would you most like to do?
• True or False: I’m not wealthy enough to be a philanthropist. Explain why you think that.
• How do you interpret this statement? A fool and his money are soon parted.
• How has your income influenced your life?
• Have you ever made a significant mistake with your finances? What did you learn?

Aesthetic CLEAN GIRL
By Amanda Zanger
2024 is the year of putting your skin first! The “no makeup”makeup look is taking the world by storm, relying on skincare to create the perfect, glowing base that allows your skin to shine!
There are seven steps to achieve this minimalistic look:
STEP 1: Taking care of your skin is the key to the success of this look. Cleansing daily, exfoliating weekly, hydrating daily, and wearing sunscreen 24-7 are the best ways to achieve a healthy skin glow factor.
STEP 2: Think less is more. Keeping your hair simple is essential in nailing this look. Focus on keeping your hair healthy and radiant. Slick it back, put it in a simple bun, or straighten it. If you are straightening your hair, utilize a serum to tame away any flyaway strands.
STEP 3: Make your hair shiny. While keeping your hairstyle simple, adding hair oil sprays will enhance its natural shine and give that overall polished and healthy look.
STEP 4: Remember that makeup needs to be flawless and simple. A ‘clean” girl’s’ skin is dewy and radiant. Choosing a foundation
that matches your skin, one that is not overly heavy or mattifying is critical. A sheer foundation will let your natural skin shine. If you need to add extra pop, add a drop of liquid highlighter to your foundation to achieve that dewy complexion. Stay away from bright blushes, loud eye shadows, or harsh contours. A quality foundation, clear lip gloss, and some mascara are all you need.
STEP 5: Wear minimalist clothing. This look centers around simplicity and comfort. Casual gym wear or lounge wear will work on those errand days. For work settings, consider a structured blazer paired with a plain tee and modern jeans. Avoid loud prints or patterns and opt for neutral colors such as cream, brown, gray, or khaki.
STEP 6: Keep your nails in a short, well-manicured fashion. Light pinks, clear, or neutral polishes are great options.
STEP 7: Adopt a clean lifestyle to transform your mindset and outward appearance. Engaging in physical exercise regularly, eating healthy, and living a soft life is the road to a ‘clean girl’ life.
Utilize these seven tips to help achieve that "just got out of the shower - and I’m effortlessly gorgeous" look! n

COINCIDENCE?
One of the great things about getting older is reconnection. It might seem unexpected, but retirement, travel, free time, and motivation all conspire to bring seniors back in time and back together.
We have such a case at Washington Crossing. Two 90+ year old guys, Don Eide and Tom Lemonds, found themselves living across the hall from each other with a bit of history between them. Back in 1943-44 they were teammates on the junior high city basketball championship team from Lowell School.
Today, you can still tell that Don and Tom were athletes. Don has achieved some notoriety as a bowler, with a lot of 300 games under his belt. He still bowls regularly and walks a lot. Tom is a regular walker around the neighborhood and visits his wife Dorothy every day at her nursing home.
The picture on the right side of the page is a photo of that team from Lowell Junior High in central Sioux Falls. Don is holding the trophy and Tom is fourth from the right in the top row.
When we look at old photos it really hits home that some moments are deeply and richly felt.
These scrappy young men had no notion of the long future that they would enjoy, but now they can have fun looking back.

Athleisure fashion trends for 2024
By Jessalyn Holsing
Athleisure (casual, comfortable clothing designed to be suitable both for exercise and everyday wear) has emerged as a sustainable clothing trend over the past few years – and it seems to be here to stay. Throw the idea of “trend” out the window and confidently add athleisure as a daily staple to your wardrobe. However, be aware - even in staples, cycling trends occur, and this year will be quite a treat with the introduction of breezy, breathable, comfortable athleisure!
Summertime can be hot and seasoned with spells of humidity that make the air difficult to breathe. Clothes that chafe and stick are not welcome, and not comfortable, and can make you feel hot - but not “hot” in a good way. Some sweat-wicking materials work well enough, but the 2024 version of athleisure takes it a step further. First and foremost (if it isn’t already), cotton is going to become your best friend. As global trends always return to a level of practicality, cotton as a natural fiber is also the most breathable. Cotton has been a staple for centuries in clothing - it is ‘tried and true’ and incredibly comfortable. When choosing your new athleisure, check the tags carefully and choose pieces with as much cotton as possible.
Cotton and current design trends will provide a cooling and breezy feeling as you’re out and about in the sun this summer. Airy and flowing athleisure dresses will keep you cool and comfortable while on the go. They pair easily with a crossbody bag and sneakers for easy walking. Loose-fitting shorts, widelegged pants, and even a variety of skorts and light jackets make for top-tier outfit styling choices.
Finally, we’re still seeing a lot of solid colors, giving your look an added versatility for layering, styling, and transitioning between work and play. Keep yourself ‘cool’ by matching tried-and-true cotton pieces with on-trend looks to enjoy yourself through all walks of your daily life this summer! n

RETIRE WITH JOY!
Mentally and Finacially Preparing for the Time of Your Life
RETIREMENT is supposed to be amazing, right? All that free time, relaxation, doing whatever you please. But here’s the thing: retirement is often a mixed bag of emotions, and it’s totally ok to admit that!
Throughout her 17-year career as a financial advisor, Richelle Hofer has helped many people financially prepare for retirement. But even when people are financially prepared to retire, many people struggle mentally and emotionally with this transition. Retirement is a BIG life change.
In 2022, Richelle took a one-year sabbatical and she experienced firsthand many of the struggles she’d heard her clients talking about for years. “I think it’s so easy to get our identities wrapped up in our careers,” says Hofer. “Especially for women. In the first part of our careers, we’re really focused on balancing our work and our families. We put so much focus on climbing the ladder
and raising well-adjusted, healthy children. When our kids no longer need us to manage their daily lives, many of us turn our energy toward our careers. When retirement arrives, we find ourselves asking, ‘Who am I?’ ‘Why do I exist?’ ‘Am I relevant?’ ‘Am I needed anywhere?’ These are big questions to wrestle with and they can suck the “joy” right out of what we’ve worked our whole life to achieve.”
Hofer knew that if she was passionate about helping people retire, she had to do more than create solid financial plans. She had to find a way to help people not just retire but Retire with Joy!
“During my sabbatical, I started writing a little bit about my emotional challenges. At first, it was just therapeutic, but eventually, I started thinking, maybe other people could benefit from the lessons I’m learning too.” By using her firsthand experience coupled with things
ADVERTORIAL
“I dedicated the book to all of my clients, past and present. They mean the world to me, and they have taught me so much about life and retirement. I am forever grateful.”
– Richelle Hofer, Financial Advisor and Founder of Impact Wealth Management
she’d learned from her retired clients along the way, Hofer authored the book “Retire with Joy! Mentally and Financially Preparing for the Time of Your Life”. The book gives practical advice on everything from creating a daily habits checklist to freezing your credit profiles.
But the book has taken on a life of its own. In April, Hofer hosted a “Retire with Joy!” event for people in or approaching retirement. A panel of professionals (including a mental health professional), talked about the parts of retirement that are often overlooked… like finding purpose and permitting yourself to slow down. The event was so well received that an Encore Event is planned for August.
“At the event people told us they were really interested in continuing these conversations in a smaller group setting so we’re actually working on creating some retirement support-type groups.” Retirement looks different for everyone, but regardless of the differences, one thing is true nearly across the board: retirement is a big life transition that is about more than just money.
Hofer ’s book is available on Amazon or by contacting Impact Wealth Management at 605.333.0123. If you’d like more information on the upcoming Retire with Joy! Encore Event, or the retirement support groups, email hello@letsimpactwealth.com.

Backyard BBQ and Food Truck Favorites
By Jayci Holsing
Summertime is all about getting together with family and friends, spending time outdoors, and of course, good food. While smoking your own barbecue and cooking delicious homemade sides is a great way to incorporate family, friends, and dining, another alternative to combine those summertime get-togethers is to make an evening out of trying new culinary treats and exploring the local food truck scene. Who knows, you might even discover your new favorite guilty pleasure!
There are many local food trucks parked around the Sioux Falls metro area serving delicious meals to the community. Whether you and your crew are leaning towards barbecue, pizza, sandwiches, Mexican, or even international cuisine, Sioux Falls food trucks have got your cravings covered. One food truck favorite in Sioux Falls is barbecue. At the barbecue trucks, you can find all the classics like pulled pork, brisket, beef, beans, and coleslaw. No matter the occasion, barbecues are always a favorite to bring family, friends, and community together!
If you are looking for an occasion to get out and about and experience our local food trucks and treat your family, definitely keep your eyes open for outdoor community events this summer. Some of these events include the June Eastbank Block Party, and Fridays On The Plaza in Downtown Sioux Falls. They feature some of Sioux Falls’ favorite mobile cuisine along with other local vendors and activities for all ages. Get your family and friends together, get outside, and enjoy some amazing local food! n

Dakota Fresh Food Hub
Providing local, sustainable product all year
By Jill Funke | Photos courtesy of Dakota Fresh Food Hub
Consumers and producers are becoming increasingly concerned with the origins of their food and are committed to organic and sustainable practices. The purpose of Dakota Fresh Food Hub is to bring the two groups together to address these considerations.
After months of research, meetings, and instrumental assistance from the South Dakota State Extension, the Dakota Fresh Food Hub opened in 2016. The Food Hub is an online marketplace where customers place orders on Mondays and Tuesdays, and producers fill those orders
and then bring products to a cooler rented through Minnehaha County Conservation on Thursday mornings. Deliveries are made directly to wholesale customers, with pickup sites for retail customers at Altered Species Ales in Sioux Falls and Klassic Corner in Brookings.
Dakota Fresh Food Hub offers a variety of benefits to buyers and sellers. Producer Alicia ElMamouni said, “Before becoming a producer member, I spent a lot of time making deliveries and invoicing with less predictable income. Dakota Fresh now handles my distribution and

invoicing, aggregates sales, and issues me one monthly check. I save precious time, my cash flow is improved, and I can run my business much more efficiently.” Dakota Fresh Board of Managers Treasurer Lisa Henderson-Smith adds, “Many producers admit that their least favorite part of their operation is the marketing and admin tasks required. Belonging to the hub provides them a networking opportunity with other like-minded small business owners that increases their visibility to customers, thus freeing them up to do what is most meaningful to them, which is the hands-on work of their business.”
Customers also benefit from belonging to Dakota Fresh as they know the origins of the nutrient-dense, high-quality products they order. Harvested and delivered within a few days of the order, produce has a longer shelf life than items trucked thousands of miles to reach other retail destinations. From seasonal produce to grass-fed meat, honey, cheese, eggs, raw milk, soap, and more, there will surely be something for everyone. Consumers can also rest assured that producers, drivers, and staff handling food
and products follow strict food safety requirements. They can also take pleasure in the fact that they are positively impacting the local economy.
The ease of use for customers and producers is very attractive to both groups. A simple visit to their website provides users options to sign up with simple forms that get them connected to the hub, however they want to participate. With no monthly minimums or membership fees, and the ability to purchase from multiple producers in one place, Dakota Fresh Food Hub has perfected ease of use while providing a place to establish relationships between producers and sellers. Individuals, families, restaurants, caterers, grocery stores, and producers are encouraged to visit the website and see what awaits them in the online marketplace. n

Finding thrift items to add style to your home
By Chellee Unruh
Tired of generic décor that looks like everyone else’s?
Here’s a solution that’s budget-friendly and ecoconscious! Look no further than thrifting! Thrifting is a treasure trove for those who love the thrill of the hunt and appreciate a sustainable approach.
Whether you are a seasoned thrifter with a knack for unearthing statement pieces, or a curious newbie ready to curate your first unique space, a little planning can seriously elevate your home décor game. Before you start, rest a beat to define the overall vibe you want to create. Are you drawn to a clean, minimalist aesthetic or a bohemian retreat? Think mood board! Apps like Pinterest and design inspiration boards are your secret weapon, helping you to solidify the vibe you’re bringing to life through your thrifting finds.
Thrifting is about seeing potential, not limitations. Don’t be afraid to fall in love with a piece for its potential, not its current color. A fresh coat of paint can quickly turn a thrift store find
into something that looks straight out of your favorite home décor store!
While embracing pre-loved items, prioritize their quality. Secondhand doesn’t have to mean low quality. Inspect each item carefully and look for items that are well made, in good condition, and without damage or flaws. Good quality pieces will last longer and be a better investment over time. An easy way to inspect an item is to use Google Lens on your phone to find out more information about pieces you find and compare prices, to ensure you are getting a good deal.
Thrifted décor allows for exciting experimentation. Mix textures and materials like wood, metal, and textiles for a dynamic effect. You can even blend vintage finds with modern pieces to create your unique and personal style. If you have recently shopped the big box stores or home décor stores, you will find that antique mirrors are on trend. Try thrifting an antique mirror, or find an antique frame and insert a mirror.

Thrifting isn’t just about saving money. Every pre-loved item has a story, adding depth and character to your home décor. Plus, you’re contributing to a sustainable lifestyle by giving preexisting items a new life.
While patience and a bit of luck are essential, the payoff is undeniable. The thrill of unearthing that perfect piece, combined with the creative freedom to personalize it, makes thrifting a truly rewarding experience. Decorate your home with unique finds, character, and a touch of history - all without breaking the bank. So, what are you waiting for? Start your thrifting adventure today! n

Minneapolis transplants fall in love with the beauty of small-town South Dakota life
Story & photos by Margaret Pennock
For Leah and Patrick Mahoney and their dog Johnny Utah, relocating to Canton, SD, from Minneapolis, MN was never their plan. Initially, after much evaluation and visiting the state from the east border to the west, they decided on making Sioux Falls home. However, after an extensive house search and not finding ‘the one’- their realtor took them on a short, 25-minute drive to Canton to view a charming 1889 bungalow. For Leah, the Marketing Coordinator for HOM Furniture, finding the home that was a perfect fit for them, was priority.
According to Leah, “When our very patient realtor showed us this little old 1889 house in Canton, we loved it. The big question then was if Patrick was willing to do the drive every day. We very quickly decided that 25 miles on straight highways is much simpler, and faster than 25 miles in Minneapolis.”
After two years, the Mahoney’s have settled in and made their house a home. Leah shares, “It definitely took some getting used to, but the longer we’re here, the more we’re enjoying the slower pace. Johnny Utah and I walk every day through our neighborhoods full of old homes. On Friday mornings we take our long walk out into the country on the dirt roads and back around into town, then walk through the drive-thru at Laura’s Lattes, our coffee shop, and get a latte for me and a biscuit for him.” She laughs, “We found out pretty quickly that people in this small town don’t see people walk as much as we tend to walk, so we think the people of our neighborhood call us the crazy walkers. One of our neighbors told me that her husband asked her if we had a car, which cracked us up! We do of course have a car.”
38 June/July 2024 sfw | HOME
With just the three of them, the two-bedroom and onebath home full of character was perfect for the couple. However, it also allowed them to do some cosmetic remodeling to truly call it theirs. Ignoring passing trends, the Mahoney’s filled their house with treasures from family, antique stores, flea markets, thrift stores as well as Marketplace to create an eccentrically, uniquely beautiful home.
An avid collector with a keen eye for curating, Leah’s home reflects that. “I have always been drawn to pretty, cozy, cute, beautiful, eye-catching settings. A cute house with the perfect porch, a coffee shop with old books and vintage décor, and a restaurant that has the right lighting and furniture. But it took me a while to figure out what I really love and how I wanted my house to feel.”
With a traditional bungalow layout, the house welcomes guests with a large, gracious front porch entering directly into their family room. The original hardwood floors, (a huge selling point for them), were in pretty rough shape when they purchased the home but were lovingly refinished to their original beauty before Leah and Patrick moved in. Fortunately, the walls which are the original lath and plaster were in great condition
but covered in two layers of wallpaper that they painstakingly removed and refreshed with beautiful and traditional shades of paint. Adjacent to the family room is the perfect place for the couple’s shared home office.
The flooring in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, and bathroom had old, peeling linoleum that they replaced with happy, graphic tile appropriate for the age of the home. The small but well-laid-out kitchen and bathroom took the majority of work done in the remodel. Leah notes, “The kitchen was definitely something that we thought long and hard about. The lower cabinets were newer, the countertops were a laminate that I didn’t care for, and the upper cabinets were old and probably not original to the house. They were low, which did not leave much counter space and we felt that they made the kitchen feel crowded and a little dark. After much consideration, we took out the upper cabinets. I’d been wanting to try open shelving, which I know is controversial. So we bought boards and Patrick cut them and I finished and hung them. We have loved it!”
Now, the bright and sunny kitchen showcases Leah’s vintage kitchen finds artfully but is also usefully arranged. The old laminate countertop was replaced with a sleek

slab of quartz. Leah painted the original and beautiful butler’s pantry cupboards and has them filled with her favorite Jadeite dishware and family heirlooms. The limited square footage has helped Leah become extremely organized and neat.
Perhaps one of their favorite places in the entire house is the screened-in porch where Leah and Patrick spend the majority of their time. This overlooks their beautiful backyard which they fenced in for Johnny Utah to enjoy.
“When the weather is nice, we hardly use the living room or dining room at all. We found a great porch set that has a table with two ottomans, so when we want to eat we use the table, and when we want to lounge, we put it to the side and just use the ottomans. I eat lunch there every day, sit out there for a while after work, have dinner there, and use a projector to watch movies in the evenings. We’re that couple that calls to each other the minute it starts to rain and run in a mad dash to the porch, so we can listen to it.” Not quite finished with renovations, Leah has plans to work on the porch this summer. “Last year I sanded and painted the floors, which were a mess and I plan to paint the walls and trim, and we may redo the screens.”
Their bathroom was nearly a complete overhaul. “We painted and replaced the toilet, the vanity, the mirror, and the vanity lights. The vanity is one my dad and I made for our last house and I couldn’t bear to leave it there when we moved. It’s made from an old dresser we found on Marketplace and were super

excited when it fit in the bathroom here.” The shower curtain is actually a tablecloth repurposed from Patrick’s grandmother.
The second floor hosts the primary and guest bedrooms, finished with antique furniture and warmly painted walls for a cozy, bed-and-breakfast feel. The quilt on their bed was hand-made by Leah’s grandmother. “My home, now that I’m almost 40, is a reflection of patience and time spent in antique stores, thrift stores, Marketplace, and flea markets. And with a limited budget. I think the only new furniture items in my home are our sofas and mattresses. So many items are from family, I LOVE the history I feel with these items filling our home with character and stories. We have a painting of what looks like Yosemite that we got from Patrick’s grandparents that I’ve been looking at for years. This spring we were finally able to go there and it felt like walking into that painting and somehow it made the whole experience there and coming back to the painting more special. I have my grandma’s set of drawers that she kept next to her chair my whole childhood, getting the broken tipped scissors, the stationary to write a letter on her lap desk, pulling out of those drawers what she needed for whatever she was working on.”
For these two transplanted, happy South Dakotans, life just couldn’t be sweeter. n

“ABA is the scientific, data-supported study of behavior that uses research-based intervention to change behavior. It is what we specialize in, making it part of our name – interAct ABA.”
interAct ABA seeks to provide effective and individualized services to meet the specific needs, strengths, and challenges individuals and families face.
“Our mission is to teach all children, regardless of diagnosis, to interAct with their natural environments and their family and friends around them and build relationships with those closest to them.”
When looking for a clinic-based setting for ABA therapy, “interAct is the place to be,” Jenny adds.
“As a small therapy clinic, we offer structure, reduced distractions, and more opportunities to facilitate learning. Setting matters. Research shows that when clients are seen in-clinic, it helps them easily acclimate to new situations, new faces and new challenges.”
In its clinic, interAct ABA focuses on consultation services for families, ABA services, case management, communication skills, stereotyped or repetitive motor movement, advocacy for clients and families, public playgroup for neurotypical individuals, gross and fine motor skills, and highly restricted, fixated interests.
ADVERTORIAL
Family connections are highly valued at interAct ABA.
“Children need the support of their family and their caregivers,” Jenny says. “With appropriate resources, caregivers are better equipped to make informed decisions regarding their child’s care.”
Our goal at interAct is to empower the caregivers to continue to be their child’s number one advocate.”
At interAct, ABA is viewed as a form of interpersonal therapy by the staff. It stands as a crucial and indispensable approach in the fields of psychology, education, and therapy.
“Its emphasis on individualized interventions, evidence-based practice, and skill acquisition makes it an invaluable tool for promoting positive behavior changes and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with a wide range of developmental challenges. As our understanding of human behavior continues to evolve, ABA remains at the forefront, offering hope and support to countless individuals and families.”

INTRODUCING TULA!
Ear tubes done differently
By Natalie Slieter
Ear infections are very common in infants and toddlers. Most children will have at least one ear infection before the age of three. When children suffer from recurrent ear infections or have excess fluid in their ears, the insertion of ear tubes is often the answer. Midwest ENT & Allergy in Sioux Falls is now offering a new kind of in-office ear tube placement called the Tula Tympanostomy System.
The Tula System is a safe alternative to the placement of traditional ear tubes in children using a revolutionary local anesthesia system and an automated 1-click tube delivery device that is performed in the clinic, not a hospital or surgery center. Midwest ENT is the only clinic in South Dakota currently offering the Tula System.
The innovative Tula system allows ENT physicians to comfortably place ear tubes in awake children during an office visit. First, the eardrums are numbed with a special numbing solution, and then the TULA device is used to insert the ear tubes quickly and safely without general anesthesia.
Dr. Greg Danielson has been at Midwest ENT & Allergy since 2016 and is performing some of the first ear tube procedures in South Dakota using the Tula System. “We are so excited to be able to offer patients the option of placing ear tubes without the need for general anesthesia,” he says.
The Tula System is FDA-approved for children six months and older. The child’s ENT physician will examine them to
sfw | HEALTH
determine if they are a candidate for TULA. A major advantage of children receiving ear tubes from the Tula System is that the tubes are inserted into the ears much quicker than traditional ear tubes, which decreases the amount of time the child must hold still. Studies show that 95% of ears were clear at their threeweek-follow-up.
“We are typically able to perform Tula in the office in less than 45 minutes. This is a huge time saver compared to several hours in the hospital or surgery center,” states Dr. Danielson.
For those patients who are a good candidate, one of the many benefits of the Tula System is that it is a cost-effective option when compared to traditional ear tubes. The Tula System also does not require anesthesia, making it easier on the children and, of course, their parents. It also does not require a hospital visit, which is another huge advantage of the Tula System.
Dr. Danielson tells us, “By having the option to have Tula performed in the office setting, we can significantly reduce healthcare costs for our families.”
If your child is struggling with recurrent ear infections or ear fluid troubles and you would like to know if the Tula System would be an option to provide relief, contact Midwest ENT & Allergy at (605) 336-3503 to schedule an appointment today! No referral is necessary. n

From Simulation to Superhero: The Journey of Training a Modern Nurse
Learn how simulation training has revolutionized nursing education
By Chellee Unruh | Photos courtesy of SDSU College of Nursing
Forget the outdated stereotype of the bedpan-toting nurse. Today’s nursing profession is a dynamic and everevolving field at the forefront of healthcare. Fueled by technological advancements and the invaluable lessons from COVID-19, nurses have accomplished incredible things. But how are we preparing the next generation of nursing superheroes for this innovative and demanding role? Simulation training is a timehonored yet revolutionary training method used to shape the future of nursing education.
We spoke with Alyssa Zweifel, Director of the Healthcare Simulation Center (HCSC) at South Dakota State University College of Nursing, to learn more about how simulation training will shape the next generation of nurses.
The Healthcare Simulation Center (HCSC) utilizes simulation to create realistic healthcare scenarios for students. Unlike traditional methods, simulation allows students to practice skills and experience real-life situations in a safe, controlled environment. Simulation can involve high-tech manikins, trained role players
portraying patients (called standardized patients), or even virtual reality.
Traditional clinical settings have inherent limitations. Factors like patient safety, limited clinical sites, and faculty availability can restrict student exposure to specific diagnoses or patient situations. As Alyssa Zweifel explains, “Simulation training bridges this gap. Unlike clinical settings, simulation guarantees experiences for students.”
Particularly true for women’s health. SDSU’s nursing curriculum prioritizes focused training scenarios in maternal/newborn healthcare. Alyssa elaborates, “We have an unfolding scenario where students practice assessment skills and care for a woman and newborn during different stages of pregnancy and postpartum. These essential skills aren’t always guaranteed exposure in clinical settings.
Simulation training goes beyond technical skills. As Alyssa Zweifel explains, “Students react differently to patient situations based
52 June/July 2024
sfw | HEALTH
on their own life experiences. These experiences, both positive and negative, can trigger emotions or memories during simulations.” Experiencing these emotions and facing these challenges in a safe environment with trained faculty is crucial. It allows students to reflect on their feelings and learn to compartmentalize and prioritize patient needs. This emotional preparedness is vital, as nurses often encounter patients experiencing grief, loss, and other difficult emotions. Simulation training allows students to practice providing compassionate care in these situations with trained standardized patients and faculty guidance.
The innovative simulation training at SDSU’s College of Nursing is backed by a notably dedicated team. Seven faculty members hold prestigious Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) credentials, while two staff members are Certified Healthcare Simulation Operation Specialists (CHSOS). This team actively participates in international simulation groups, showcasing their research and creative approaches at conferences worldwide.
This expertise is crucial as simulation training becomes increasingly important. It has become the foundation that allows future nurses to blossom into superheroes in the healthcare field. By providing safe yet realistic scenarios, simulation bridges the gap between classroom learning and real-world experience which ensures the graduates enter the workforce confident, compassionate, and prepared to tackle any challenge. n

Travel Tips for Your Pets
By Amanda Zanger, DVM, CPT
Summer is here - that means long weekend trips or extended stays for many of us. As a busy pet parent, I understand the family trip will not be the same without your four-legged best friend. This article will highlight the tips and tricks I recommend to take the stress out of future pet travel.
First and foremost, I recommend that every pet has a level of identification such as a microchip and/or collar with a tag imprinted with any relevant contact information. Whether you are traveling by plane or taking a long road trip, others must have a way to track them back to you.
Traveling by plane can be extremely stressful, and if you haven’t traveled with a pet before, and if your pet is not a certified service animal then they will have to ride under the seat in front of yours. Certain airlines have different requirements so please check their website before booking your flight. I would also recommend booking a direct flight if possible to decrease the time your pet has to travel on the tarmac during potential extreme weather conditions. If your pet is too large to fit underneath the seat and traveling in cargo, purchase a USDA-approved shipping crate that is large enough for them to sit, stand, turn around, and is lined with comfortable padding (make sure it is
sfw | HEALTH
something they won’t eat) will keep them comfortable and safe during their trip. Regarding food and water, I recommend taping enough food and treats to the outside of the crate so that airline personnel can give it to them at the proper time. The night before you leave, freeze a small dish or tray of water and hang it in the crate with them so that it melts as they travel and avoids any spills. The crate door should also be closed but not locked so that staff can easily open it for feeding or in case of emergencies.
Going on a long road trip? This may seem easier than traveling by plane but it can still be equally stressful for everyone especially if your pet is not used to riding in a car. If your pet is not a seasoned passenger, I recommend taking them on a series of short drives first and then gradually lengthening the time. While driving, keeping your pet in a secure and well-ventilated crate is recommended. If you forgo the crate, consider using a harness attached to a seat buckle in case an accident should occur. Just as we enjoy those road sodas and snacks, your pet will get hungry and bored on extended trips as well. Pack a travel kit with food, a food bowl, a water bowl, bottled water, extra leashes, doggy bags, and any medications needed. Bringing your pet’s favorite toy or pillow will give them a sense of familiarity and calmness.
Last thing, please see your veterinarian to ensure all vaccines are up to date - this is extremely important as some states and countries require health certificates from a licensed veterinarian or proof of current rabies vaccination status. If your pet is anxious while traveling, consult your veterinarian for different anti-anxiety medications or therapies.
I hope you and your furry best friend enjoy the summer travels. "Bone" Voyage! n

Helping people heal and thrive through equine therapy
By Virginia Olson
Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks
Jenny Eggers can’t say enough good things about horses. As a young girl, she found lots of joy in being in the barn, grooming, feeding, riding and otherwise caring for them. But there was more. She always felt a special “horse-to-human” interaction. The horses, with their unique attributes, just seemed to reduce her stress and improve her overall well-being.
Jenny’s love and life-long relationship with horses eventually became her inspiration to start 605 Roots, a non-profit in Brandon that taps into the therapeutic value of humans connecting to horses. As a certified life coach with equine training using the Draper Sensory Method, Jenny – and her horse Sweetie – help to balance the body and brain for those dealing with trauma.
MORE THAN A FRIEND
The power of an equine relationship has long served as a force in Jenny’s life. She got her first horse from her grandpa Lonnie when she was 12 and living in Nebraska. While a broken home and poor grades robbed Jenny of her self-esteem, her horse offered companionship and gave her confidence.
From that point in her life, Jenny has always owned horses. She also knew someday she wanted to bring horses and humans together.
“I began to dedicate my spare time to studying the horse and the human brain. I also studied how to connect with horses and ‘read’ them. How was it that just being in a horse’s presence made me feel good learning that the horse’s brain and the human brain are parallels in life?”
SiouxFallsWoman.net 57 sfw | PROFILES
But for Jenny, all this understanding and realization didn’t come overnight. Rather, it took years to evolve.
BECOMING A NEW KIND OF THERAPIST
As an adult, Jenny worked as a massage therapist. “For 20 years, I heard the hearts of many of my clients, the affairs they experienced, children fighting drugs and alcohol abuse. I found myself in so many unique situations. My heart hurt for them, but I gave no advice, just compassion and grace.”
“I also always wanted to know why. Why people did do what they did? I knew that being an unwanted kid also “programmed” me. But all these confusing thoughts seemed to come together when I decided to make some major life changes and looked at ways that would allow me to help others emotionally.”
“Horses changed my life. I realized I wanted to become a practitioner in equine therapy. I began by earning my certification
as an equine-assisted therapist from a program in Larkspur, CO. I got certified in 2020 in Draper Sensory Therapy. One year later, I became a certified life coach. In 2023, I took the big step of quitting as a massage therapist and moved on into a new career as a full-time equine therapist and life coach.”
THE RIGHT STUFF
“Still, making my new career ‘work’ meant having more horses. “That took some figuring out,” Jenny said. “We already owned two horses and two more were given to us. But to move forward with equine therapy first required finding a horse with the right temperament and specific movement required in the Draper Sensory Therapy method.”
Sweetie, one of the gift horses, fits the bill. Now the next big hurdle was whether equine therapy would be accepted as “in the Midwest riding a horse backwards can seem crazy.”
58 June/July 2024
Jenny providing equine therapy with her client, Brooke.
WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?
But even with the right horse, Jenny had to find the right location. Of course, that meant accommodating horses in a therapy setting. At the time, she was living in Brandon, SD, and trailering everywhere was a lot of extra work. Her sister and brother-inlaw had a pasture available. Though this was close, there was no arena. And some friends offered their arena. The hard part – Jenny had to travel 40 miles one way two days a week to conduct her therapy sessions. And yet another neighbor came forward offering an enclosed arena in Valley Springs shortening the drive.
“Nothing seemed ideal, I was still trailering horses weekly,” Jenny admitted.
Jenny attests that the biggest problem was that the right property was not affordable. Still, she was grateful that her husband Josh encouraged her and kept moving forward.
In April, all that changed. Jenny and Josh learned about an available acreage in Brandon that was movein ready with room for their family of six, all their horses, and suitable for equine therapy. It was a property they had wanted but couldn’t afford - till now. There was a price drop.
“The whole thing was out of the blue,” Jenny recalls. “Dreams do come true.”
LOTS TO OFFER
“With this new acreage, I have been able to offer my horse therapy and life coaching sessions right out of my back door. We are now providing classes and camps teaching the foundations of horsemanship, grooming, proper handling of a horse, and the basics of riding. We also have the flexibility to share all of our horses, not just what we can fit in the trailer.”
Jenny says experimental learning through horses is on the rise. “I am able to teach life lessons through horses, teaching individuals young and old the importance of healthy
boundaries, communication, identity, confidence, and courage.”
Importantly, Jenny says she has God to thank.
“I shed a lot of tears believing that God is way bigger than we give him credit for.”
MAKING EQUINE THERAPY WORK
Jenny will be the first to admit managing an acreage now with eight horses doesn’t come cheap. There is the care of the pasture, buying hay for the winter, buying feed, trimming hooves, fly spray, and paying vet bills. She and Josh felt the best way to offer equine therapy was to create a non-profit – 605 Roots.
At 605 Roots we never want anyone to not get the help they need because they csn’t afford it,” she said. “We honestly believe that because of this philosophy - and mountains of prayers from close friends and family and even from those who we don’t know – 605 Roots has become a reality. We have served individuals from all around the state; normally ages six to 30 seem to be our hot spot. But I have also had someone on the horse at age 84.”
“My husband works non-stop for our family and our horses to keep the place running. We also have three part-time volunteers.”
605 ROOTS…AND BEYOND
Reaching children through horses has also been important for Jenny. She is part of Grit & Grace Nation which meets once a month at 605 Roots and equips girls ages 8 to 18 with leadership skills. Another organization is Rising Rock Bible Camp where Jenny is president. The camp is held at the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds every year to give kids the opportunity to grow in the Western way of life, experience God, and build friendships that last a lifetime.
“There aren’t adequate words that describe what horses mean to me,” she said. “I do know I have learned some of the most important life lessons – hard work, how to be a good listener, how to trust, how to set boundaries. All this from my horses; these animals just seem to create powerful, in-the-moment feedback. 605 Roots, my horses, my husband, and family – it’s more than a blessing!” n

Elevating Artistry:
Rehfeld’s Modern Fine Art & Framing
By Kjersten Joachim | Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks
Nestled in the heart of Sioux Falls, Rehfeld’s Modern Fine Art & Framing has been an integral part of the community fabric since 1983, when it began. Under new ownership since late 2023, the gallery’s narrative continues to unfold, grow, and evolve into what it is today—a treasure of contemporary local and regional artistic expression and unique craftsmanship.
Owner Lindsey McCann traces her journey back to her and her husband, Micah Jastram’s roots in Sioux Falls, where their affinity for art blossomed. “My husband and I grew up in Sioux Falls,” she shares, reminiscing about her early days working near Rehfeld’s original location on Phillips Avenue. Armed with a Bachelor in Fine Arts from USD, she honed her skills in custom framing by working at a similar custom frame shop in Bozeman, MT, which they eventually purchased in 2020.
While successfully growing that gallery, Lindsey explained that during a trip back to Sioux Falls, they learned of the opportunity to purchase Rehfeld’s - and it seemed like a natural fit. “The passion and dedication we have for our craft is what motivated us to continue the Rehfeld’s name while elevating the brand,” said Lindsey. Rehfeld’s offers a diverse range of services, from creating custom mirrors and fine art framing to fine art printing, art consulting, and installation. But beyond these services, Rehfeld’s is a space that invites you to explore and appreciate art. The gallery is curated in a way that makes the artwork approachable and enjoyable for all. “We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable in our space,” Lindsey emphasizes.

A recent remodel allows for a regular influx of new artists to inject fresh energy into the space, ensuring there’s always something new and exciting to see.
Monthly exhibitions rotate in fresh perspectives and prompt a new visitor experience. “We strive to maintain a selection of work that is authentic to the area and the artist creating it,” she says. But perhaps what truly distinguishes Rehfeld’s is its dedication to inclusivity and authenticity. “It is important to us to be a space where artists feel safe to tell their story & share it,” Lindsey reflects.
New shows and events will be promoted on their Instagram page and website. “This summer is going to be full of wonderful art, and all are welcome to come and enjoy!”

What's New: Kid to Kid
Mompreneur
brings sustainable style to Sioux Falls with Kid to Kid
By Chellee Unruh | Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks
For Sioux Falls moms, keeping up with a growing child’s needs can feel like a constant game of catch-up. Clothes are outgrown in a blink, toys lose their allure, and baby gear becomes obsolete seemingly overnight. But Alexa Goodroad, a local entrepreneur and mom of a two-year-old named Haddie, saw an opportunity to transform this challenge into a solution. This May, Alexa’s dream became a reality with the grand opening of Kid to Kid, a new children’s consignment store at The Western Mall (between Scheels and Best Buy).
Kid to Kid isn’t just another resale shop. Alexa, a lifelong Sioux Falls resident, envisioned a space that catered to the specific needs of busy parents while offering a sustainable alternative to traditional retail. “I wasn’t satisfied with the existing options,” Alexa admits. “There was a need for a store that offered high-quality, gentlyused items at affordable prices, while also fostering a sense of community.”
Kid to Kid, a franchise with over 120 stores nationwide, perfectly aligned with Alexa’s vision. The brand emphasizes quality control, ensuring that only gentlyused and name-brand clothing, toys, and baby gear find their way onto the shelves. This focus on quality extends to the shopping experience itself. Gone are the days of digging through cluttered racks. Kid to Kid boasts a bright and well-organized layout, making it easy for parents to find what they need, even with little ones in tow.
But Kid to Kid goes beyond convenience. “Sustainability is a core value for us,” Alexa explains. “By providing a platform for families to sell their outgrown items, we’re not just saving parents money – we’re also giving these clothes and toys a second life.” This focus on minimizing waste resonates with Alexa, who, like many moms, is increasingly conscious of her environmental impact.

credit with a 20% bonus, further stretching their shopping dollars. And for budget-conscious shoppers, Kid to Kid offers a treasure trove of deals. “We have regular sales, flash promotions, and coupons,” Alexa says, “so parents can always find incredible savings on the things their children need.”
Beyond the fantastic deals and curated selection, what truly sets Kid to Kid apart is the passion behind it. Alexa handpicked her team, ensuring a welcoming and knowledgeable staff ready to assist with any questions. “Our vendors are also amazing,” Alexa beams. “They bring in the most incredible items every day, making our store a true treasure hunt for parents.”
Kid to Kid is more than just a store – it’s a destination for Sioux Falls families. It’s a place where parents can find high-quality items for their children without breaking the bank, all while contributing to a more sustainable future.
