SPOTLIGHT Thea Miller Ryan

Jessalyn Holsing

20 years

Thea is a writer, reader, wife, mom, conure and cat owner, crafter, sushi addict, ally and accidental activist. She works for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of South Dakota. How did you become a writer/contributor for Sioux Falls Woman Magazine? I think I just bugged Jared until he let me write on spec for the magazine. I guess he liked what I wrote, because he’s let me stay all these years. What is your favorite thing to do? Writing, reading about art history and eating out. Something everyone should know about you? I was one of the founders of The Outdoor Campus in Sioux Falls and helped create the second one in Rapid City. What is your philosophy on life? Scatter kindness. What are you most thankful for? My family, of course, and a lifetime of working places that help make our little bit of the world better. What is something you cannot go a day with out doing? Coffee. Coffee. Oh, and coffee. What is your most favorite article you have written for Sioux Falls Woman Magazine? I wrote an article on moonlight gardening quite a few years ago. It’s still one of my favorites. What do you like most about Sioux Falls Woman Magazine? I love how it looks in the magazine stands. It looks so professional, bright and well-printed. It makes me proud to know I’m part of it.

Jessalyn Holsing grew up in Sioux Falls and is a story-loving bookaddicted reader who loves writing, musical theatre, and sports cars. How did you become a writer/contributor for Sioux Falls Woman Magazine? I started off putting together the Calendar of Events for the Sioux Falls Woman Magazine, after getting my Bachelor of Arts degree in English, I began writing articles for Beauty and Fashion Trends. What is your favorite thing to do? Writing and reading. Reading is writing--the more you read, the more you learn about writing, and the more ideas and inspiration you can obtain from reading as well as the world around you. Crafting paragraphs out of words and sentences brings me the most joy. Something everyone should know about you? I've been writing since I was 4 years old. Genuinely, the first story I wrote as a child was about puppies searching for Santa Claus--I haven't stopped since! What is something you cannot go a day with out doing? Stepping outside in the sunlight. I joke about being like a plant, I need proper amounts of sunlight to go on! What is your most favorite article you have written for Sioux Falls Woman Magazine? The first article I wrote about Tim Hall and his journey through therapeutic pilates. Even though the article was about how pilates can be useful for the body, I had a wonderful discussion with Mr. Hall about his life and his philosophies. What do you like most about Sioux Falls Woman Magazine? I love the way the Sioux Falls Woman Magazine puts a spotlight on a variety of women highlighting their successes in life. There are wonderful women doing wonderful things in the world, and it's great to get an insight into the lives of local women doing big, beautiful things.

f you are looking for a quick day trip to a place that offers opportunities to explore nature and art and also take in a fun festival then plan to go to Brookings South Dakota, on July 9 and 10. Brookings is home to many attractions including the McCrory Gardens, the South Dakota Art Museum and the Annual Brookings Summer Arts Festival. McCrory Gardens is a botanical garden and arboretum, located on the eastern edge of the South Dakota State University (SDSU) campus, just off 22nd avenue. It was founded in 1965 with the mission of connecting people and plants through education, research, discovery, and enjoyment of the natural and built landscape. It serves as a living museum of curated plants, trees and shrubs and offers programs in education, conservation, and display. It is a botanically diverse collection of herbaceous and woody plants rather than a simple aesthetic collection. “There is a peace about the Gardens that words cannot describe,” shares Lisa Marotz, Director of McCrory Gardens. “People of all generations can gather and delight in all that creation has to offer at this oasis on the prairie.” McCrory Gardens is open daily from 10am-6pm with last admission at 5:30pm. Check their website at sdstate.edu/mccrory-gardens for admission rates, events, facilities rental, or changes in their schedule. The South Dakota Art Museum is located at 1036 Medary Avenue and is open daily. Since 1970, the museum has been a destination for people to enjoy the artistic legacy of South Dakota in all its diversity. “Visitors come from across the country to view exhibitions drawn

from our extensive collections, especially our acclaimed Harvey Dunn and Native American collections,” shares Carolyne Hart, Marketing and Development Coordinator. The Museum Store is also a popular destination thanks to its selection of original art from local and regional artists. Summer patrons will experience six exhibitions showcasing works by Harvey Dunn, Paul Goble, Oscar Howe, and a wide variety of contemporary and traditional artists. Through July 31, visitors can also explore The Gift, featuring works by Lakota visual artists, poets and musicians curated by Dr. Craig Howe from the Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies. To learn more, visit SouthDakotaArtMuseum.com. This year marks the 51st Annual Brookings Summer Arts Festival on July 9th and 10th at Pioneer Park on west Highway 14. It is a juried art festival that features 200 artists and skilled craftsmen, in 15 categories from the region and nation. Artists apply and are juried by the BSAF Committee in March each year. Artists are required to design, create and represent their work during the event. Art ranges from traditional painting, pottery and jewelry to functional wood and mixed medias. “There really is something for everyone”! I have often used the phrase “an outdoor extravaganza of art, food and entertainment”! shares Shari Avery, who serves on the Board of Directors. Along with the artists, the Brookings Summer Arts Festival has a fun area for 20+ Edible & Natural Artisans. This area features booths that have handcrafted items like soaps, syrups, honey and specialty food items. “We are very proud of our South Dakota heritage, and feature Living History and Antique areas.” says Shari, “The Living History booths often have re-enactors who love to share their crafts like tinwork, spinning & weaving and blacksmithing.” Patrons can enjoy free entertainment at Pioneer Park Bandshell stage or participate in child friendly activities. You won’t have to worry about going hungry or thirsty while attending with 38 juried food booth choices available. The festival offers shuttle busses that run continuously on both days from the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum parking lot, for just $1 one way, and deliver guests to the east side of the park. Savvy Summertime Fun By Jennifer Dumke

S

ummertime and the Living is Easy.” Ella Fitzgerald sings it best! You can feel it in the air; smell the aroma of fresh cut grass, hear the sounds of children playing and the off-key melodies of ice cream trucks and street musicians. It’s wonderful! Let’s embrace the season and not let today’s generation redefine summer by holing up inside on electronic devices while snacking on junk food. Let’s take a savvy positive approach and implement some of the following tips, tricks, and trends to keep your family happy, and entertained this summer season. V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N: We’re gonna have a ball – Nothing will ever replace the memories of a traditional summer family vacation. It might mean driving long distances making many stops to see landmarks (like the world’s largest ball of yarn), flying to a resort - amusement park- sports venue, or visiting relatives at a reunion. All of the aforementioned make for great vacations – just always keep in mind that half the fun is in the journey rather than the destination. Include every family member in the planning phase. And when you go - be sure to take lots of photos and journal each days’ activities. Vacations are so versatile - they can fit into any savvy budget. Whatever you choose to do - the ultimate goal is the same; make family memories. If a savvy “staycation” is on the agenda this year – Try engaging your family in outdoor activities Yes, even yardwork can be fun! And everyone will enjoy the outcomes. Allow your little ones to help with the work and then have them make small bouquets of fresh blooms if you have a flower garden. For the green thumbs who planted vegetables, get your kiddos to join you when picking them. Who knows, maybe if they play a part in the harvest they will actually eat their veggies? Fairy gardens are extremely cool

(sans the dirt) and can be as small or large as you wish and placed almost anywhere. However, if you live in South Dakota and if you have delicate pieces, you may want to consider putting the fairy garden in a sheltered area below a deck, under a tree or a place that isn’t exposed to the elements. Summer is synonymous with food – Outdoor activities make you hungry! Involve the entire family in planning menu’s that involve grilling outdoors or making new “no bake” recipes. Although it’s not advised that children be near any type of heating element, they can still have fun observing and helping. Make the foods you love and take the summer fun one step further by eating outside. You don’t need a fancy patio or picnic shelter – a colorful blanket on the grass in your own back yard will make any summer food taste scrumptious. The dog days of summer will eventually arrive – making waterworks of all sorts a savvy summertime activity! If you live in an area that has a swimming pool or and outdoor waterpark, be sure to purchase a season pass so everyone can easily go to play and cool off. No community pool or waterpark close by? A trip to a local store will provide you an endless variety of blow-up pools, slides, and toys to keep the family cool and active with a simple garden hose in your own backyard. Finally, try a little kindness – Be kind to yourself and teach this to your children. You don’t have to be savvy to know that just soaking up the vibes of summer may be the best way to spend quality relaxing family time. Self-kindness is simple; swing in a hammock, pick fresh herbs, read a book, take a walk, gaze at the stars. Doing it together with family makes for the best summertime imaginable. n

CHAPTER 1 HOSTS STAND UP FOR WOMEN VETERANS RETREAT By Jill Baker, Junior Vice Commander, SDDAV Chapter 1

DAV Arthur H. Muchow Chapter 1 hosted its first annual Stand Up for Women Veterans Wellness Retreat on Saturday, March 26, 2022 in Sioux Falls. More than 50 women veterans and service members attended the one day event at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Holding true to the purpose of strengthening the leadership, power, and voices of military women, there was free childcare, a healthy lunch buffet, 21 vendor booths, parent/child activities, 4 wellness sessions, a motivational speaker, and a lunch-n-learn. We were honored to host Ashleigh Byrnes, Deputy National Communications Director for DAV National Service and Legislative Headquarters. Ashleigh provided information about the legislative work and efforts DAV is making to be more inclusive of women and other marginalized veteran populations. Thank you to Ashleigh (and her six year old son, Jack), our motivational speaker Lori Byers Walsh, and the speakers who hosted the wellness sessions (representing The Vet Center, VHA, and VBOC). We would also like to thank our event partners for their hard work and dedication to making this retreat a success. We couldn’t have put on this event without the support of our event coordinator, Community Action for Veterans, and event partners whose inkind hours and donations totaled more than $16,000! A hardy thank you to all of you! Keep an eye out for information about the next retreat which will be held in March 2023. Foreign Exchange Programs A life-changing experience By Natalie Slieter | Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks

O

pening your home to provide housing and food to a stranger for a year could seem difficult, yet that is precisely what host families worldwide do for foreign exchange students. Greenheart Exchange Local Coordinator Angie Baack works with families and students participating in foreign exchange programs. As a liaison between the schools, host families, and students, Baack checks in with families and students at least once each month and always remains available to offer support. She has a spare bedroom available for respite care if needed. Baack explains, “If there were a family emergency, or if host parents just want to get away for a weekend, I can provide temporary care for that student.” According to Baack, most host families do so because they have a personal tie to exchange; either their parents hosted when they were younger, were friends with an exchange student in high school, or know someone who hosted. She admits that it’s hard for those with no experience to take that step. Yet Baack encourages them to consider. “By hosting, you are literally changing your life and the life of the student by giving them the experience of a lifetime! “ Lacy Steinberg, a current Host Mom to Marina, explains her foreign exchange experience by saying, “It’s an ongoing experience for your family, your extended family, and the whole school, which fosters curiosity about the whole world and how others live. Our family has two younger girls, so they get the experience of having an older sister. We have created a lasting bond with Marina and have given 16

SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2022

Marina the growth opportunity of a lifetime! The skills she acquired during this past school year will impact her for the rest of her life.” Fellow host Tara Johanneson echoes that sentiment, saying, “Choosing to host international students has honestly been one of the best decisions we have ever made. We wanted our children to experience the world, yet wouldn’t be able to take them everywhere, so instead we decided to bring the world to them. It has really helped us be open-minded, see things through different perspectives, appreciate cultural differences, and instilled in us a desire to continue learning more. We would encourage everyone to give hosting a try... it’s worth it!” Baack feels that one of the most significant benefits of the foreign exchange experience is that host families gain another family member. Often, host families stay in contact with their students after they’ve left; some even go back and forth to visit each other. She adds that when families include children, they learn about other countries, cultures, and ways of living while teaching the student about the culture in the U.S. It gives their children a global mindset and an education they can’t get from a textbook. Lastly, Baack talks about the changes the experience makes within participants, as she comments, “Since people tend to fear what they don’t understand, with this experience, there is a greater understanding of differences among people, which leads to greater empathy.”

Greenheart partners with other upstanding exchange agencies in foreign countries. They recruit students for the U.S. who have teacher recommendations, show academic success, prove English proficiency, have full parental financial support, and demonstrate emotional maturity. Students are fully vetted, and only those capable of having a successful experience are selected. Baack says, “I match students with family interests. After everything is complete, the students and host families can communicate to get to know each other before the student arrives.” Baack wants people to know that host families are not limited to families with teens. They can include single people 26 and older, hetero or same-sex couples with or without children of any age, or empty-nesters who miss being involved in their children’s activities. To become a host family, applicants must apply, pass a background check and provide meals, a bed (sharing a bedroom with someone of the same sex and close in age is acceptable), and a supportive environment. Baack adds that students bring their own spending money and insurance. n More information can be found at www.hostwithgreenheart. org or by contacting Angie Baack, Local Coordinator, at 605.610.9870 or GreenheartExchangeAngie@gmail.com

STAY POSITIVE AND BE KIND Mike and Sarah Schulte of Schulte Subaru are focused on encouraging positivity and kindness not only in their employees and customers, but also across the entire Sioux Falls community. The definition of positive (noun) is “a good, affirmative, constructive quality or optimistic outlook.” Kind (adjective) is defined as “having or showing a friendly, generous, and considerate nature.” In a world where bad news is a constant, it can be difficult to be positive and show kindness to those around us. But choosing to exemplify these qualities can truly change your life and the lives of others. Being positive means choosing to see the potential benefits or lessons to be learned in a situation instead of sinking into negative thoughts and doubt. It means encouraging and uplifting others instead of dragging them down. It means looking at each day as an opportunity to grow as a person. Being kind means being friendly with everyone you meet and thinking of others before yourself. Like positivity, showing kindness is uplifting to others and will likely lead to those around you also choosing to be kind. So, what does this look like in your day-to-day life? Wake up each day with a positive attitude. Choose to make it a great day and take each task as it comes, whether expected or unexpected.

Spray Tanning to a “T” By Jessalyn Holsing

O

h, how we love to bask in a beautiful, youthful summer-tan glow reminiscent of days spent lazing in the sun, frolicking as kids and teens without a care in the world. You can do this easily – anytime – by introducing yourself to spray tanning! In this fast-paced world spray-tanning has become a great option to achieve that lovely youthful bronze and glow in a pinch. The first time it can be a bit intimidating, just be aware that spray-tanning is all about preparation and maintenance, seek a professional to help you choose the best spray tan option for you. First, what is a Spray Tan? A Spray Tan is a fine mist sprayed onto your body. This mist has an ingredient in it called Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) that interacts with your own skin’s chemistry to turn the color of your skin into a beautiful tan or bronze color. We talked to our local Spray Tan experts at Year Round Brown, about prepping for a perfect, gorgeous glow along with advice on how to make sure your tan is suburb and steady. Year Round Brown offer two types of spray tanning: Booth Spray Tan and Airbrush Spray Tan. Both are applied as a heated spray with strikefree results. While the VersaPro automated is a quick

walk-in option, Airbrush Spray Tanning does require an appointment. The airbrushed tan is a more luxurious and personalized option. An airbrush artist can custom contour your entire body in pristine locations such as the cheekbones, chest, abdominal section, and legs; some additional luxury add-ons include color-matching areas of your body and providing a dry powder when the airbrush is completed. Today’s spray tans are as subtle and sophisticated as ever. Spray Tanning solutions now offer a variety of colors and tones customizable to light, medium, dark, or extra dark depending on the desires of the client. An instant bronze spray tan with cool toned violet-based solution will help to neutralize yellow color with warm undertones leaving you with a beautiful, fresh from the tropics look. An instant bronze spray tan with warm toned cosmetic bronze will give you that classic beach bronze tan. A Clear Bronzer is the “no fuss” bronzer that allows you to leave the salon with no instant color in your spray tan, the real bronze developing 4-8 hours after your tan. Your spray tan experts at Year Round Brown will ask you questions like, “what event are you tanning for, when is the event, and how dark of a tan are

you desiring?” Based upon the clients answers they will advise which type of spray tanning service best fits your needs. Leading up to your spray tan, it is recommended that all spa-type treatments (manicures, pedicures, waxing, etc.) are done at least one day prior, and to shower, shave, and exfoliate the night before or morning of a treatment. Exfoliating your skin thoroughly will help ensure the tanning mist latches onto your pores, helping to give you a smooth bronze. Make sure to avoid lotions or anything that will leave any residue on your skin, and arrive at your appointment in loose, dark clothing to make sure as little bronzing is transferred to your clothes as possible. Airbrush Spray Tanning is luxuriously personalized and customizable–down to what you wear for your appointment. Spray tans are a judgement free zone. If going fully nude makes you uncomfortable you can wear swimwear or undergarments. After your appointment, to ensure an extension of your spray tan’s life, use a salon quality Tan Extending daily moisturizer and body wash. These products are formulated specifically to help your tan last as long as possible. Immediately after your spray tan avoid swimming pools, don’t work out to a sweat, and avoid water/rain. Do not shower for at least 6-8 hours, (or the length of time recommended by your tan expert) to make sure your skin latches on to optimum color! All of these steps will help extend the life of your spray tan, making sure you have the best color possible for as long as possible. Spray tanning is a wonderful way to give yourself a quick, beautiful bronze that fits you perfectly. A spray tan should last 5-10 days, depending on the tan you select, the activities you perform, and how well you take care of your tan after your appointment. For special events, Year Round Brown suggests a trial run of your spray tan 3-4 weeks in advance. Get the glow “that’s all you”, and boldly walk with color this summer with your luxurious Spray Tan! Year Round Brown takes walk-in VersaPro Spray Tans at all 10 locations and Airbrush appointments can be booked online at yearroundbrown.com/airbrush. n

' n i k c o R Resort Wear:

For vacations and all summer long By Jessalyn Holsing

W

e’ve all experienced the scramble at the mall: sifting through rack after rack of cute summer clothing looking for that perfect off-theshoulder top or maxi dress… and then only wearing it one whopping day on vacation. It sits in the closet, collecting dust, and you think “maybe I’ll find an excuse to wear that again,” and perhaps you never do. Enough of leaving those cute outfits in a closet vacation, here are some ways to bring them out and wear them all summer long! First and foremost, we love a good maxi dress or a long skirt. They’re breezy, beautiful, fun, and flowing. Why leave that comfort hidden in the closet? The office may get chilly, or maybe dress code requires covered shoulders, so nab another timeless trend and pair that cute dress with a comfy, classy jean jacket. For the skirt, grab your essential white V-neck t-shirt to pair it up. You’ll look comfortable, crisp and fresh while feeling warm and summery. Let’s not forget about your accessories! We adore our chic leather purses, but perhaps for the summer we can let them rest while we bring out something a bit more tropically relaxing. A woven palm beach tote doesn’t have to be restricted to the pool area, stock it with your wallet, sunglasses, and a few other essentials and show it off every day! Woven palm totes are light and comfortable, and with their wonderful neutral tone you garner a lot of miles with a variety of outfits. Vacation clothing and items should not spend the summer cooped up in the back of your closet or chest of drawers. Bring them front and center and WEAR them! The sun’s out, so let your fashion fun stay out, too! Experiment with your vacay stylings and create something unique, breezy, and balmy to wear the entire summer! n

Healthy Eating: Six Superfoods for a Super Summer Story & photo by Ashley Sornsin

K

ickstart a Super Summer by eating superfoods! The term ‘superfood’ refers to foods that offer maximum nutritional benefits, and are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. These foods are nutritional powerhouses. They are the superheroes of plant-based foods here to save the day with essential nutrients that help the body thrive! Read on for the delicious details of how to easily add six superfoods to your summer meals! 1. Blueberries – Small but mighty, blueberries, especially wild ones, are an excellent source of antioxidants that help protect our cells against damage from free radicals. Studies have shown that blueberries can help in reducing the risk of cancer, heart disease, and other conditions. Antioxidants are also important for hair growth, strong nails, and healthy skin. Add blueberries to a smoothie, on top of a salad or eat alone, there’s nothing more satisfying than a handful of plump blueberries! 2. Fermented Foods – You’ve probably heard that it all begins in the gut. It’s true, and fermented foods are filled with probiotics that are incredible for supporting gut health. Gut health has been linked to healthy immune function, mood, and even the prevention of several chronic diseases. Summer is the perfect time to load up on fermented vegetables like sauerkraut. Make your own (not canned or in a bag) or look for the kind that’s refrigerated as the probiotics are preserved. 3. Quinoa – An ancient grain and very popular, it’s known for being rich in fiber and contains all nine essential amino acids. Quinoa makes 30

for an exceptional substitution for rice or other grains and is a super addition to a salad bowl! 4. Leafy Greens – Super-good for you, leafy greens like kale, spinach and chard are an excellent source of protein and flavonoids which can prevent damage from free radicals and harmful inflammation. They’re chock full of vitamins and easy to add into any meal, from smoothies to soups and salads, a handful goes a long way! 5. Avocado – As if we needed more reasons to eat this ‘fruit’, avocadoes are one of the healthiest foods you can eat. They’re an excellent source of heart-healthy fats, they are packed with antioxidants and other nutrients that help with cholesterol, bone density, skincare, eye health, and much more. Sliced avocado is the perfect salad or toast topper, or a favorite way to enjoy avocado might be in the form of a delicious guacamole. 6. Sunflower Seeds – If there’s a seed of summer, sunflower seeds would be it! Sunflower seeds provide a significant source of many nutrients and antioxidants. Sunflower seeds are the first things I reach for when I feel like I might be fighting off a cold. Superfoods aren’t a cure all, but they will aid your body to fight back against nutrient deficiencies when you choose to eat them in conjunction with a healthy diet. Here’s to kickstarting your Super Summer with these six superfoods. n

In the Kitchen: Wow Factor on a Budget Story & photos by Lisa Marie Blair

A

re you looking for easy ways to update and rejuvenate your kitchen without breaking the bank? Then this article is for you! It is possible to modernize your kitchen without spending tens of thousands of dollars on new cabinets, hardware, backsplash, floors, and furniture. Utilizing paint, along with several other options are at your disposal. Oh, the amazing things a fresh coat of paint can do to transform a space! Painting your existing kitchen cabinets is always a great way to change the look of your kitchen while staying on a budget. If painting all of the cabinets seems too daunting, you can always opt to just paint the island or peninsula. Perhaps you’re bored with your all-white kitchen and a modern tuxedo kitchen with white uppers and black lower cabinets would fit your style? If that’s the case, then you can simply get by with painting just the base cabinets and still transform your kitchen. Other things to consider painting instead of buying new would be to paint your kitchen stools, dining room table/chairs, and yes even the backsplashes and stencil floors.

32

SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2022

Touching a paint brush to wood is a big no-no for many people and that is understandable. However, you can still change things up by just swiping that paintbrush all over the walls. To really revamp the look of your kitchen/dining room, you can make a dramatic change with a couple coats of black paint on the walls. Even one colorful accent wall can breathe new life into a space. Don’t forget about the fifth wall. Normally, ceilings are left white, but this can be a fun place to add a punch of color. Paint really is the quickest and least expensive way to refresh your kitchen and dining space without spending tons of money. If you want to open up your kitchen and “designing on a dime” is your budget, you still have several options. You can remove some of the upper cabinets and replace them with open shelving. Or just remove the cabinet doors off of a couple of cabinets and paint or wallpaper the insides to proudly display your favorite dishes. Another big change you can make in your kitchen/dining room is to switch out or update the metals. Lighting is the jewelry of the home and swapping your outdated light fixtures for something new

can make a dramatic change for minimal expense. Cabinet handles and hardware are easy to change out making for a quick way to update your kitchen. The faucet might not be as easy-peasy to change, but it will be worth it if your current one is looking old and outdated. Don’t be afraid to mix up metals-if your faucet and cabinet handles are black, it is totally fine to mix in gold or chrome fixtures. Wallpaper is making a huge comeback and can dress up your walls beautifully. If you are thinking texture versus wild colors or patterns, then consider paperweave wallpaper. You can wallpaper one statement wall, the entire room or even the ceiling. With so many options available all it takes is a little elbow grease, imagination and time to update your home on a tight budget. Several small changes can make a big impact and help you create the WOW kitchen you want to be in. n

T H R E E G E N E R AT I O N S O F W O M E N L E A D E R S Lloyd Companies has been serving Sioux Falls for 50 years! Craig & Pat Lloyd moved to Sioux Falls in 1972 to help Craig’s uncle manage some apartments. This led to the Lloyd’s partnering with his uncle and then being offered the opportunity to buy him out. Pat says Craig liked to be out in the community while Pat enjoyed taking care of all the business details. “I loved the job, helping people with their housing needs, and working alongside my husband – he always appreciated me,” Pat said. Over the years, Lloyd Companies has built a team that is enthusiastic and committed to improving the quality of life in all the communities they serve. Pat made it a priority to lift women up and help them find a role they could excel in. “From inception, I have recognized the value women add to any business.” Christie Ernst, one of Pat’s three daughters, joined the company in 2007 after her mother called and asked her to return to South Dakota to take over, as Pat hoped to retire at some point. Christie was living in Virginia and was unsure about returning to the Midwest, but the pieces for her and her husband to return fell into place. Christie is now the Executive Vice President of Property Management at Lloyd Companies.

“I get to work with a talented team of leaders that provide amazing client experiences for our residential, commercial, and hospitality clients,” Christie shared. Christies says working with her mom – something she wishes she did more of – has been amazing. She wishes her mom received more credit for the success of the company because she was the main driver behind the scenes. “She has a way of recognizing talents within someone, she advocates for women, and she sees the possibility of something great,” Christie said. ost are quite familiar with the old saying “ready or not, here I come.” This was especially true for Michelle and Shawn Poe, who’ve been working on remodeling their home for the past 16 months. “We really wanted to move in before Thanksgiving,” adds Shawn. “Hosting family and friends is very important for us during the holiday season so we wanted to get as much done as we could.” With the help of seasoned interior designer, Dawn Bures, owner of Dawn Bures Designs, we took the completely gutted home and gave it new life. Even though its beauty simulates a breath of fresh air with endless light colors, ample windows for natural sunlight and minimal décor and furniture, the home still makes a bold statement. “I know Shawn and Michelle quite well,” adds Dawn. “So, it was fun to work with their new style.” In fact, Dawn, who is also a licensed realtor, came in handy when the Poes were looking for their home. “We had wanted to move for quite some time,” adds Michelle. “But we had difficulty finding the right opportunity or home that was within the area of our choice.” After all the options were eliminated, Dawn came to the rescue by finding this sprawling, two-story home. The couple fell in love immediately but knew it was going to be a complete major renovation. After acquiring the home, work started immediately to transform this spacious splendor. “We use every inch of this home,” adds Michelle. “It perfectly fits our lifestyle and needs.” A family favorite is the large, modern kitchen. Striking black cabinets contrast with the gray quartz countertop and white oak flooring. A large center island features both form and function. The gas cook-top saves on space while the walnut wood counter is perfect for casual dining and hosting gatherings. Having the kitchen already built, the Poes immediately fell in love.

“It was the kitchen that originally grabbed our attention,” adds both Shawn and Michelle. “We just worked with the look and feel of the space and enlisted the services of Dawn to carry it through the rest of the home. Open and free-flowing, a “formal yet informal” dining room keeps with the theme with a large dark wood table and cream and gold dining room chairs. “We are all about relationships, conversations and experiences; a round table is all encompassing,” adds Michelle. Meanwhile, a cozy nook with dual white leather tufted chairs and artistic pendant light is another family favorite because of its uniqueness. A large canvas print featuring subtle tones of grey and gold help establish a cohesive color palette. With both Michelle and Shawn working from home, two functional home offices were a must. Pivot doors lead into Michelle’s eyecatching space with its ample use of walnut wood. The custom-built desk even rises and lowers electronically for an optional standing

workstation. A walnut custom wall of shelves is perfect for displaying family treasures. Staying ahead of the trends, Dawn’s assistance with the grand open staircase proved to be a showstopper. With glass sides and walnut wood, the stairs are like a piece of art. The glass takes on a modern cue and allows all eyes to focus on the black walnut staircase that leads to the upstairs, downstairs and the other side of the home. Despite its large scale, the see-through glass keeps the space light and airy. Leading to the master bedroom is a curved hallway with black framed elongated glass windows. Reminiscent of a fine art gallery, the architecture alone makes a bold statement. Meanwhile, the master bedroom is an oasis of comfort and beauty with a circular wall of windows that includes a door that leads to a private patio. “The sunrises are so beautiful from here,” adds Michelle. The circular tray

More walnut can be seen as accents in the master bathroom. A built-in Jacuzzi tub is encased in walnut and blends with the surroundings. White high gloss herringbone patterned tile are underfoot while walnut seating and an oversized floating cement sink serves two with dual faucets. To maximize the spacious feel, a frameless mirror is placed over the sink and fills the wall. But the true favorite is the shower. “I really like the steam shower,” adds Shawn, when referencing the white and grey porcelain accented shower with glass door. A large walk-in closet with a center island keeps clothes organized and easy to access. “We love to entertain and to have our home be the place where our kids and their friends wants to hang out,” adds Michelle. A large great room with vaulted ceilings is spacious with white oak floors and an elegant black lacquer grand piano. Beyond that is a comfy white upholstered sofa with a matching area rug. For entertainment, a flat screen television is recessed and accented with walnut. For a touch of elegance, an elongated fireplace is surrounded by a wall of porcelain. The white background and thick grey veins of the stone instantly grab attention. A two-story high wall of glass windows leads to a covered deck and outdoor kitchen perfect for entertaining, as well as accessing the backyard and patio. Finishing off the main level is a unique powder bath. Once again, adding a bit of glam to the space, rectangle marble tile extends up the walls and is simply finished off with a cement sink and circular mirror. “We didn’t put a lot of accessories in here because we loved the pattern in the tile,” adds Dawn. Walking up the grand staircase to the upperlevel balcony provides a breathtaking view from above. This second story is perfect for this family of four. Both of their daughters have a room along with an office and bathroom. The girls have full bathrooms featuring porcelain white floor tile, black cabinets and white countertops.

Even with the light tones, the lower level is designed for fun and entertaining. White oak floors extend throughout the space while small seating areas and games give it an arcade-like feel. A line of elongated windows allows ample sunlight while an overhead projector with a 130” screen and soft upholstery provide the perfect place for movie nights and just hanging out. Scenic views from the many windows’ welcome guests and the family to come out and enjoy the lush backyard. The paver patio is complete with a fire pit and hot tub as well as providing access to the in-ground swimming pool. The lower level features a guest bedroom and a full bath with unique slatted walnut walls and ceiling and a glass walk-in shower with black tile. A frameless circular mirror is all that is needed to showcase the sleek design and materials. Finishing off the lower level is an additional full bath, powder bath, a dance studio and fitness room. “We spend a lot of time in here,” adds Michelle. “And it’s nice that we have a place for our daughters to practice.” And now that the Poe family is nearing completion on their renovations, they can sit back and enjoy a quiet evening. However, if they truly had it their way, the home would be filled with family, friends and fun. n

DIY Pallet Nesting Tables Story & photos by Emily Olson

A

dd functional nesting tables to your outdoor space this summer with pallet wood. Nesting tables are space-saving and provide extra surface area when needed. The lower table here is also the perfect size to use as a stool when you need another place to sit. Paint the table base with a pop of color or stain the entire table with a deck stain that suits your style. This project uses every part of a pallet, from the traditional pallet boards to the support braces in the middle. Pallets are often a little beat up, but for an outdoor space, this works perfectly.

Directions: 1. Use a Kreg jig to drill pocket holes where the table base pieces will connect. When the pieces are connected, the pocket holes can be hidden underneath the table top boards or for the base boards, the drilled sides can face the ground. 2. To build the base, construct the two sides and connect them with the back supports. The lower support pieces should be affixed ½ inch from the ground level so that only the table legs touch the ground. Use large clamps to hold the boards in place while adding the screws. 3. Sand the base and paint or stain as desired. 4. Line up the table top boards face down on a flat surface. Set the table base upside down, and center it on top of the boards and nail it down. 5. If the table will be in an exposed space, add a water repellent finish. n

FIND YOUR FAVORITE HOME FURNITURE AND DECOR The Sioux Falls Scheels Home Décor Shop Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks

For over 20 years, the Scheels in Sioux Falls has been a destination place for the best brands in clothing, sporting goods and outdoor recreation gear. But what you may not know is that they also carry a large selection of home furniture and decorations. Barb Sechser has been a manager at The Home Décor Shop at Sioux Falls Scheels for over 16 years and has seen tremendous change in their selection and products. Sechser, along with fellow manager Jennifer Poncelet, have collaborated together for the past six years and are both excited for customers to come in and shop their favorite brands like Craftmaster, Riverside, Crestview and Style Craft to name a few. Although The Home Décor Department has successfully transformed countless homes throughout the past twenty years, both Poncelet and Sechser agree it was time for the department itself to get a facelift. “It’s important to stay current. That’s why we are updating the existing store to a more modern look that’s on trend with the vendors we carry,” she adds. “We feel this facelift will enhance the shopping experience for our customers.” The enhancement involves providing a more neutral backdrop to allow customers to really see the product assortment and visualize it in their own homes. Existing customers will also be pleased to see the freshened look. “Our experts are excited to reconnect with our existing customers after the remodel and look forward to welcoming new faces as well,” adds Poncelet.

A Healthy Life: Advice for Women from their 20s to their 80s Your guide to staying healthy at every age and stage of life By Sanford Health

Y

our regular wellness visit is a great step in being preventive about your health. Your doctor will help you understand which screenings and vaccines are right for you based on your age, risk factors and health history. Women should see their primary care doctor routinely for a wellness visit. During this time, your doctor will ask you about recent changes in your health and will identify if there are diseases you may be at risk for. Your risk factors can come from your medical history, your lifestyle, your family history of disease, or current medications that you are using. These visits are often covered by insurance once a year at no additional cost to you. Vaccinations may be recommended, such as the annual flu shot or the COVID-19 vaccine. They are viewed as preventive medicine, something to keep you healthy and avoid a serious medical problems in the future. Blood pressure measurements and other vital signs may indicate a risk for cardiovascular disease. Women are also screened for safety in their home (domestic violence), depression, and tobacco and alcohol use at their regular wellness visit.

Just a Regular Day Emily’s story lights the way for others By Donna Farris, Avera Health

T

hey say a parent is as happy as their unhappiest child. For Emily and Jason Feldhaus, this meant many years of struggle, mental anguish and stress as they sought ways to find the right combination of treatment for their troubled son. Starting at the young age of 8, Emily could see the signs. Thankfully, she worked as an emergency department nurse at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell, SD. But no emergency training could prepare her for what she was about to encounter. He was only 11 years old when their son attempted to take his own life. It was a day like any other when they came home and found their beloved son with a suicide note and a weapon. Moments later, their son was on his way to the Avera Behavioral Health Center in Sioux Falls, SD. For the next 12 days, he remained in the care of the doctors and nurses at the Avera Behavioral Health Center. Although extremely difficult for Emily and her husband, they knew he would not be safe at home and that he needed the help of professionals. The family made the difficult decision to turn the situation over to those who could help him best. After two weeks at the Avera Behavioral Health Center, he began to show signs of improvement. Even a small smile gave the family much-needed hope. Emily credits the caring staff and healing environment for helping her son make progress. Discussions began about his return home. Emily was very hesitant and still questioned his safety; often internalizing the situation by even feeling guilt and shame. As her husband struggled alongside her, they relied on the compassionate staff at Avera to put their family together again. Emily took on extra hours so she could be by his side during the time they were allowed to visit. Often demanding to go home, he remained under the care of the staff at Avera Behavioral Health Center until he was ready to be discharged. Intense medication and therapy were pivotal in his success. However, that didn’t change his mindset that they were trying to change him as a person. He couldn’t even see for himself how much he was hurting.

52

SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2022

For the first few weeks at home, Emily and Jason still had many fears. As an emergency department nurse, Emily knew that “where there’s a will” and people will choose to take their life if that’s their will.

Today, he is a high school senior and recently joined the National Guard. Along with being a straight-A student, he also does very well at his job. The Feldhaus family doesn’t talk about the incident much with their son but let him know that sharing his story will help others. She often recites that “normal is just a setting on a dryer” when talking to other families in similar situations. Both Emily and Jason are forever grateful to those who support families like their own at Avera Behavioral Health. She credits the daily care conferences as part of their success. The personalized care with the counselors made a big difference. They also prepared them for vital aftercare; remaining in touch and on the lookout for warning signs.

© 2019 Delta Faucet Company

The Feldhaus family spent the next few years on high alert, sometimes even panicking when getting home if they could not locate their son right away. It was always in their minds that he could be lying lifeless in the next room. But thanks to the care they received, life carried on and he even took interest in a therapy dog. It’s this connection to animals that led him to get a dog of his own which lifted his spirits immensely. Soon he was off his medication and doing well. But the Feldhaus family was still trying to deal with the situation and remain aware of how many other cases are similar to their own.

It’s got your back and your toes. SHOWER

But they also know not every story ends well. That is why the Feldhauses are thankful to those who generously support programs and services for adolescents cared for at the Avera Behavioral Health Center. “We are really happy to see the expansion for Avera Behavioral Health Center because it will save so many lives. When there’s no place to keep them safe, Avera has provided compassionate care close to home. My son would not be here if it weren’t for their services. He would be a shell or in heaven. We are grateful for those who made gifts because investing in mental health is valuable. Just because you cannot see it, anybody can be affected at any time.” n

Hearing Loss and Dementia Mind Games The connections between hearing loss and dementia By Virginia Olson

H

earing loss is not limited to asking someone to turn up the TV or asking “Can you repeat that?” It has also been linked to an increased risk of dementia. The latest aging research conducted by Johns Hopkins School of Medicine not only shows that the two are connected, research is also leading scientists to believe that untreated hearing loss, with its social isolation and communication difficulties, may actually be a factor that leads to dementia. Dementia is an umbrella term for loss of memory and other cognitive abilities. Currently, around 6.2 million Americans over age 65 are living with Alzheimer’s; the most common form of dementia. Like dementia, hearing loss also affects millions of Americans. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, 25% of adults between 65 and 74, and 50% of adults 75 years and older have hearing loss. In another 2020 study by the Lancet Commission, research revealed that untreated hearing loss was the number one modifiable risk factor in delaying or preventing dementia cases. This means that hearing loss may be responsible for 800,000 of the nearly 10 million new cases of dementia diagnosed each year. “The Lancet article published in 2020 has shed light on the importance of early detection and treatment of hearing loss. By treating hearing loss with hearing aids, you are able to better connect with others,

maintain positive relationships, and increase neural stimulation in the auditory centers of the brain. These actions protect the brain from cognitive decline,” says Holly Ralston, audiologist at Midwest ENT & Allergy. Ralston goes on to say that hearing aids not only improve your quality of life, they serve as a safeguard for your mental and cognitive processes. So, what can you do to be pro-active on this? Ralston recommends that like blood pressure, cholesterol and eye prescriptions, people should have their hearing checked and seek treatment as soon as possible. If you are experiencing symptoms of hearing loss, it is important not to delay a hearing evaluation. Early detection and treatment of hearing impairment helps solve the problem easier and more quickly compared to those who wait until the hearing problem is severe. Midwest ENT & Allergy often offers free hearing screening events. Their highly trained audiologists check a base-line hearing projection and visit with you about your hearing health. You may call to check for upcoming screening events! The new technology in digital hearing aids is phenomenal and ever-advancing. Midwest ENT & Allergy also offers free sound demonstrations of Earlens® - The World’s Only Hearing Lens. Earlens is a hearing solution in which a custom lens vibrates the eardrum for optimum hearing results. It provides broader bandwidth than traditional hearing aids, leading to even more stimulation of the neural pathways in the the brain.

PROJECT FIRSTLINE EXPANDS IN SOUTH DAKOTA

Two new Project Managers have been added to Project Firstline in SD. Diane Eide and Jess Danko will join Cheri Fast, Project Manager and Charlotte Hofer, Director of Marketing. Project Firstline is a national infection control collaborative with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to stop the spread of COVID-19 and other emerging infectious diseases. Its focus is on infection prevention training for frontline healthcare workers. “The CDC has provided great educational information about infectious disease with innovative content that includes vibrant colorful posters, easy to understand videos, cool social graphics and tips on infection prevention this summer,” says Eide. “Best of all, they are free.” Everyone can benefit from the CDC education and the new materials according to Eide. “The education can’t stop; we must keep learning as infectious diseases are always evolving. “It is great for a business to educate staff on staying healthy and great for public awareness to help everyone stay protected from infectious diseases,” adds Eide. The South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care administers the Project Firstline program statewide, in partnership with the SD Department of Health and the CDC.

• Many germs grow on healthy skin. • Germs on skin can get onto surfaces, other people, and things that will touch other people. • Skin – especially hands – carries many germs and spreads them easily. • When one’s hands touch surfaces, germs can spread from those surfaces to that person and to others.

Germs spread by bypassing or breaking down the body’s defenses. • Healthcare tasks often involve breaking the skin. • Breaking the skin – from putting in an IV, drawing blood, surgery, or trauma – creates a pathway for germs to spread into the body.

PHYSICIAN COMBINES COMPASSIONATE CARE AND PATIENT-BASED MEDICINE WITH CONVENIENCE When it comes to being seen by a doctor, convenience and continuity is often more important than it sounds. People have jobs, activities, and families that really do need to be attended to. That’s why Dr. Brad Hruby and his team make it easier for patients to get great care – when and where they need it. They offer early morning, lunch hour and late-in-the day appointments, as well as convenient telemedicine visits during and after office hours. Do you feel as if your brain isn’t functioning like it once did? Do you feel that your thoughts are foggy or you are unable to remember things that you once could? As we age, it becomes more critical to consume a balanced diet while maintaining an active lifestyle. Both of these have been shown to promote cardiovascular health which improves brain function. The balance helps optimize detoxification and proper nutritional status. With our traditional western diet and our on-the-go lifestyle, we often lack essential components to overall brain health. With June being Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, it is crucial to stop and think about what we can do to improve our brain, for performance at a higher level. Reach out and talk to one of our pharmacists about our featured products of Memory Plus, Brain Health Support, and other items to consider to get back to the BEST you.

Jane Grieme Her Personal Journey of Self-Discovery

Bringing other women along for the ride By Chellee Unruh | Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography

A

mom from Brandon, SD is venturing to take her 15 years of experience as a certified personal trainer to help other women discover the best possible version of themselves. Jane Grieme has been on a personal journey of self-discovery and deepening of her faith. Throughout this process, Jane felt a calling to share what she has learned and use it to influence other women in a positive manner. She hopes to inspire women to join her on a journey of selfdiscovery, deepened faith, and improved health and wellness. A journey to create a new culture where women support each other’s growth and developments to find their true authentic self beyond the roles they carry. Jane has had many roles in her life, GI Jane in the Air Force, GI Jane the personal trainer, Jane the pageant contestant, Jane the Ultimate Fighter, Jane the Fitness Model, and her more recent - and most important roles of Jane the wife and Jane the mother of three littles under four! Jane was raised on the rural homestead where her parents still live, in the country between Brandon and Sioux Falls. She was the second youngest child having two older brothers, an older sister, and a younger brother. Being one of the founders of The SD Homeschool Association, Jane’s mother homeschooled her and her siblings. Janes extracurricular activities included showing horses in 4-H, dancing, playing piano, competing in the SD Teen Pageant, and Taekwondo lessons. At one point all of her siblings and her dad were all in martial arts at the same time! Jane discovered her passion for fitness in her teens. When she was 14 years old her older brothers bought a weight set for their home and she began working out with them. A couple of years later she joined the Powerhouse Gym where she would eventually work and become manager years later. After graduating, she attended college at South Dakota State

University and earned her degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation with minors in Psychology and Nutrition. During her college years Jane trained and fought for a short period as an Ultimate Fighter along with her dad and brother. She had always wondered if she could fight someone when she was younger taking Taekwondo lessons. “My Taekwondo instructor was an alternate for the 1988 Olympic box team and former NY City cop, so he taught us how to punch and tons of very intense self-defense moves,” recalls Jane. “He would have us close our eyes while surrounded by 4 people, then they would start grabbing at you and you had to use your skills to get out of it.” With the specialized martial arts training combined with her fitness training Jane successfully competed in 3 fights with a record of two draws and a win in her third fight. “I remember in the fight that I won, my opponent was an ex-Marine, and 30 seconds into the fight, I kicked her so hard that she thought she cracked a rib and tapped out!” In addition to being a fighter, Jane also competed in eight bikini and fitness model competitions. “I believe that being raised in the country with brothers, being in martial arts, and competing in Ultimate Fighting and Fitness competitions set me up with a ton of confidence so that no one could take advantage of me.” “Growing up homeschooled with no TV and nothing but Christian music, let’s just say I was VERY naïve and put myself in some not-so-great situations

- but I was never afraid of being taken advantage of.” Jane made it through college, unlike a typical student. “To this day, I have never had a beer, never been drunk, have never smoked a cigarette or tried any drugs, ‘’ shares Jane. “I met my husband during college and can proudly say that I remained a virgin until we were married.” Jane has always maintained a strong sense of self and has never allowed herself to be pressured by peers into doing anything she didn’t want to do. After college Jane worked as a personal trainer in the same gym, she grew up working out in. This role eventually evolved into the management of the gym that has taken on several names and ownerships through the years. She also served in the SD Air National Guard for 6 years. Her role in the military was administering the physical testing and helping them if they weren’t passing their PT tests. She was fortunate to serve with her husband and to work under the men that served with her dad, a retired air guardsman. Her husband’s career took them away from South Dakota and they moved to Denver Colorado for a little over 4 years. In Denver, Jane wanted to recreate the environment she had working in Complete Fitness with the owner and her mentor, Randy Hartz. She loved how they loved other people through an atmosphere of encouragement and strength training, but also prayer. She found the best way to do that was to train in the basement of her Colorado home. “I had 40 women training in my basement”! “This led me to realize that I LOVE connecting with women beyond just working out.” “I truly got to do

life with them, listening to them, sharing authentic struggles, and supporting each other.” After 12 years of marriage, Jane and her husband started their family while living in Colorado, giving birth to their daughter Emma Jane. “I was always very grossed out by pregnancy and birth, so much so that I would leave the room if anyone even started talking about the subject!” smiled Jane, “Fortunately God worked on my heart and mind and after 6 months of Him changing me, we were blessed to find I was pregnant and that was it. I fully embraced being at peace with pregnancy and doing it in the most natural way I could”. When Jane became pregnant with their second child, Charles Jon-Henry they were able to move back to South Dakota due to an opening in her husband’s career. With her Father-in-law being diagnosed with leukemia, they wanted to move back home closer to family. Shortly after moving back, Jane gave birth to Charlie, and Jon was deployed to Kuwait. “We were INCREDIBLY thankful for God’s timing, recalls Jane, as we were renting my grandma’s old house on a cute little acreage right down the gravel road from my Mumsie, Dad, and oldest brother.” With a husband on deployment, a pandemic, and two little kids, I was so grateful to be back home and around my family. Their family has expanded one more time, just 7 short months ago with the birth of Winston Alexander. Being back home she continued her love of pouring into other women by hosting a small event focused on natural birth and helping other women have beautiful, empowering, and natural births. While Jane is hoping to do more in the future, she is currently in a quiet place of learning and growth. “I am currently focused on my children, my husband, and working on myself, ‘’ shares Jane. “I am building a community of friends and committing to finding my new role.” “I want to lead by example and I am using this time to get to know myself through the eyes of my Creator.” While Jane is unsure of what her future endeavors will look like, she knows it will be in the direction of helping women excel in life with health and spiritual growth. “I see myself becoming a speaker to guide women very practically in these areas.” I believe my authenticity, humor, & transparency are all characteristics that will help me do this, but I am FAR from perfect.” “No one is. We ALL struggle, most just don’t share it. Sadly, many don’t work through their struggles in a healthy, Godly way either, and sadly those unhealthy patterns whether they be with health, nutrition, or spiritual nature will be passed to our children. It is SO important to come alongside each other and challenge each other to be better- to hold each other up and encourage each other along the way, speaking the truth in LOTS OF LOVE!!! The truth is that we are more than the roles we play." Jane is looking forward to helping women discover WHO they are. Jane has worked hard on developing WHO she is beyond her roles in life, and soon she will be finding ways to help other women by bringing them on the journey with her developing health, faith, and a strong sense of self. n

What's New: Tristate Curls Co. Embracing Curly and Wavy Hair By Natalie Slieter | Photos courtesy of Tristate Curls Co.

aintaining curly and wavy hair is not an easy task for many women. Megan Gerken, owner of Tristate Curls Co. in Sibley, IA, is a hairstylist and curl specialist who helps women view their curly hair in a new light.

Gerken graduated from Stewart School in 2011 and went on to New York City to be trained as a DevaCurl stylist, becoming an expert in cutting, styling, and caring for curly and wavy hair. After NYC, she returned to Worthington, MN, to work for a few months and then moved to Minneapolis where she worked at a curly hair salon for several years in Uptown. She returned to NYC twice and then had a short stint in Los Angeles before coming back to the Midwest and settling down in Sibley. She is married to a cattle farmer and has two children. “I wanted to get back to this area because I love it here. It’s a great community, and I love being close to family and being able to do what I love,” Gerken said. Gerken noticed a lack of hairstylists in the area who truly understood how to cut and style curly and wavy hair, which motivated her to open her own salon, Tristate Curls Co., in 2021. She has clients in 68

Sibley, but says most of her clients travel from South Dakota, Minnesota, and other parts of Iowa. She says when her clients book with her, they will receive more than a haircut; they will also be educated on how to wash, style, and maintain their curls. “Women are embracing their curly hair,” Gerken said. “I want to help them navigate loving their hair and being able to live with more ease in their curly hair.” Gerken is the only stylist in the salon, so her clients have oneon-one time with her to ask questions about their curls or they can just sit in the quiet and enjoy a cup of coffee. For clients with children, there is a play area in the back of the salon to occupy them. Gerken carries and uses hair products that are made for wavy and curly hair and will help you find the best products for your hair. She also cuts curls dry, which is the best technique to use when styling curly hair. “I’m really happy to be back and to take care of the curly girls in the area,” Gerken said.

hat we eat plays a critical role in influencing our health. Research has proven that eating over-processed foods leads to health problems preventing us from looking and feeling our best. The same is true for our beloved four-legged friends. When you feed your pet high-quality natural food your pet’s overall health will improve. High-quality natural foods will provide more energy, a boosted immune system, managed weight, and may also help with cases of vomiting, diarrhea, and ear infection. High-quality natural food can also lead to reduced risk of your pet developing food intolerance(s) or a food allergy. There is a new store in Sioux Falls that offers quality natural pet food and products. Pet Wants is a franchise locally owned and operated by Melissa Brandner-Otten. “We started as a pop-up shop selling products mainly at local vendor shows,” shares Melissa. “As our business grew, we realized we needed a retail location to better serve our customers, so we opened our retail location in Tea, SD in November of 2020.” A short year later, Pet Wants moved to its permanent location at 85th and Louise in Sioux Falls.

The natural quality products they offer are not limited to just pet food, they also offer Spaw products made in-house using natural ingredients and essential oils. What's New: Nautical Bowls Healthy food in a welcoming setting By Natalie Slieter | Photos by Margaret Pennock

T

here’s a new healthy food option in Sioux Falls! Nautical Bowls, in the Empire Plaza development on 41st Street in front of the Empire Mall, serves superfood bowls and offers a fun and welcoming atmosphere. Owner Lexus Paulson was born and raised in Sioux Falls and has always had a passion for living a healthy lifestyle. She lives in Minneapolis, which is where she was introduced to Nautical Bowls. After frequenting the store a few times a week, she realized it was a concept Sioux Falls needed, so she decided to bring the franchise back to her hometown. “It was always a reprieve for me to go to Nautical Bowls over my lunch,” Lexus said. “It’s so bright and fun and just lets people take a break.” The grand opening, held on April 23, offered free superfood bowls to the first 50 customers. Lexus was hoping they would get at least 50 customers, but she was

blown away when over 300 people stood in line waiting to get a glimpse at what Nautical Bowls had to offer.

The superfood bowls at Nautical Bowls are organic, gluten-free, dairy-free, and plantbased with no added refined sugars and are packed with vitamins and nutrients. What Lexus loves is that they can cater to any dietary restriction. She says some customers are diabetic, lactose intolerant, or have celiac disease and they can easily find a superbowl to accommodate their health concerns.

“People in Sioux Falls want this option,” Lexus said. “I think some people don’t realize that healthy food can taste good.” There are seven bases to choose from – açaí, mango, pitaya, cacao, coconut, blue majik, and chia pudding. A variety of toppings are available, such as coconut flakes, cacao nibs, goji berries, nuts and seeds, fruits, granola, and nut butters. You can build your own bowl or choose from one of their signature bowls. Lexus says part of the reason she loves her new gig is that she gets to educate customers and employees on how to lead a healthier lifestyle. “I think some may think we just cater to high school or college students and that our food offering is trendy, but we have customers of any age and any health status,” Lexus said. “Taking care of your body is important and Nautical Bowls provides easier access to healthy food.” Learn more about Nautical Bowls at nauticalbowls.com or visit them at 4001 W 41st Street. n
