In the Kitchen: Fresh Take on Midcentury Modern
By Lisa Marie Blair | Photo by Margaret Pennock
Avery sleek and stylish kitchen design trend is making a strong comeback. Midcentury Modern, also known as MCM, is a style that originally became popular in the middle of the 20th century. This era embraced sensible design no longer included intricate ornamental details that were so popular pre-WW2. If you’re craving a fresh, new, modern kitchen, with simple clean lines, then Midcentury Modern might be the designer look you want to create.
A Midcentury Modern kitchen tends to have natural real wood cabinets with contrasting black accents. Walnut and teak are very popular wood choices used in MCM kitchens. Incorporating white countertops and a white backsplash will help keep the space from becoming dark and dreary. Cabinet door styles are usually one-piece flat slabs with no applied moldings or added details. Hardware is also very simple with straight lines. To stay true to MCM style, you’ll want to avoid adding unnecessary elaborate details.
According to Shelly Buxton, a designer from Sioux Falls Kitchen and Bath, “Midcentury style is modern, but stained instead of painted. Very clean lines and doing either full overlay or frameless cabinets for that sleeker clean look.” Buxton also explains, “This style includes open spaces, floor-to-ceiling glass, and monotone interiors with a minimalist design where everything has a purpose and there is not a lot of clutter.”
Sue Uken, a gallery consultant from Ferguson, shared that “Midcentury Modern is all about function and style, so you should select items that serve both purposes. Keep faucet designs simple yet stylish, with an emphasis on functionality. The overall feel should be clean, geometrical, and sleek when planning the layout. Pendant lights and modern chandeliers fit perfectly into this design and can often become the centerpiece of your room. When creating a glamorous MCM space, mixed metals are truly a staple of this look, specifically gold.”
Last but not least, don’t forget to bring the outdoors into your Midcentury Modern kitchen by adding plants to the space. Plants work in every style of kitchen, but they will especially make your MCM kitchen feel cozier and down to earth. A well-designed Midcentury Modern kitchen will be both warm and inviting. When done properly, the result will be a timeless look that will never go out of style. n
