welcome letter Welcome to Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. We call Planet Hollywood The House That Fame Built because we’re the preferred resort of many celebrities: You can now count yourself among them, and we thank you for choosing to spend your vacation with us and our celebrity friends. This edition of Planet Hollywood magazine highlights the resort’s addition to the Harrah’s Entertainment portfolio of resorts and casinos. Robert Earl, Chairman of Planet Hollywood International, created an amazing resort experience in Las Vegas. As the new President of Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, I promise you’re in for a wonderful time. As a member of the largest gaming company in the world, PH offers even more perks for loyal Planet Hollywood guests, starting with the Total Rewards program. As a Total Rewards member you can now earn and redeem Reward Credits at Planet Hollywood, in addition to our eight sister Total Rewards casinos throughout the city. I hope you’ll make time to visit all of our casinos in Las Vegas. In fact, I’d like to give you my personal “Top 10” list of highlights for Las Vegas: Planet Hollywood: The Spice Market Buffet is a repeat winner of “Best Buffet in Las Vegas.” Check it out and I’m sure you’ll agree. Caesars Palace: I love the Forum Shops. It is truly the world’s most spectacular shopping experience. Harrah’s Las Vegas: Nestled in the heart of the Vegas Strip; I believe no casino has hotter slots than Harrah’s. Flamingo Las Vegas: Donny and Marie Osmond sell out nearly every night; get your tickets early to one of my favorite shows. Imperial Palace: The great-sounding (and great-looking) Motown group Human Nature has become the toast of the town. I still can’t believe those gentlemen are from Australia. O'Sheas Casino: The place to have fun, sing some karaoke, and make friends with the people standing next to you. Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino: Penn & Teller are truly the bad boys of magic. I’ve known them for years and still can’t figure out how they do their famous show-closing bullet trick. Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon: The Victorian Room has, believe it or not, some of the best Chinese food in Vegas. A well-kept secret! I hope you get to try at least a few of my “Top 10.” There’s so much to see in Vegas, perhaps you should stay an extra day? All the best,

Peeking in on the Peepshow Star

Her arrival in Los Angeles propelled her into the spotlight and elevated her stardom. Now Holly Madison has a new town to call home and she’s putting her signature stamp on it as well. As the unofficial Queen of the Strip, Madison has embraced life in Las Vegas where it’s been one adventure after another for the Peepshow performer—who has even hinted about running for mayor. In addition to headlining in Peepshow, Madison is filming an E! reality show, Holly’s World, that follows her life in Vegas, and is writing a book revealing off-the-grid places to visit in the city. Madison recently took a break from “all the hectic-ness” and found a few minutes to chat with us.

'I’m not scared of anything. Not even failure.' 10

What adventure has most changed your life? Living at the Playboy Mansion definitely changed my life because it made a lot of opportunities available to me. What would you do with a time machine? If I had a time machine, I would go explore Hollywood in the 1920s or Vegas in the early days. What’s the best advice you ever received? I’m not really sure I ever listen to advice. I come up with my own plan. What song must you hear at least once a week? I have a lot of favorites on my iPod. I love AFI and Blink-182. I love Katy Perry’s and Pink’s lyrics. Do you have any pre-show superstitions? I am not superstitious. I just worry about cellulite showing. I keep it practical. What is the one possession you cherish most? My most treasured possession, besides my dogs, is definitely my BlackBerry because it keeps me in touch with all my loved ones. What are you most scared of? I’m not scared of anything. Not even failure. What’s the key to staying young? I don’t know what the key to staying young is because I haven’t gotten old yet. What’s the one thing every woman should experience before she dies? I think every woman should learn how to live free of a man’s opinion before she dies.

Time Traveler It’s Rat Pack Redux when Crooner Matt Goss Takes the Stage Matt Goss must have felt a few extra butterflies when he took the stage for his first show at Caesars Palace, in front of a packed house in the Gossy Room at Cleopatra’s Barge. “To be at Caesars is a dream come true for me,” says Goss, for whom the Gossy Room is named. “I feel very blessed to be here.” Goss’ producer and Pussycat Dolls creator, Robin Antin, was in the audience on opening night, along with entertainers Leona Lewis, Natasha Bedingfield and Mel B. The 41-year-old Goss—who grew up in London idolizing Stevie Wonder and Frank Sinatra—started with the Wonder song “Superstition” and then performed Sinatra favorites “Luck Be A Lady” and “I’ve Got the World on a String.” Later in the night the crowd sang with him when he performed “Hotel California.” Goss’ show, which blends original music from his Gossy album with classic Rat Pack-influenced covers, ended with Bedingfield and Mel B on stage singing alongside him.“I just want people to come out and have a crazy good night at my show,” Goss says.

Tickets can be purchased in person at the Colosseum Box Office at Caesars Palace or by calling (800) 745-3000. General admission tickets are priced at $40. Goss performs at 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Inner Appeal

True Beauty Films Second Season at Planet Hollywood

Would you help someone struggling on the street if it could make you late for an important meeting? If a store clerk promised to look the other way, would you steal an item that could help you win a competition? These were two of the decisions contestants faced while filming the second season of True Beauty at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Surprisingly, in the challenge where contestants had the opportunity to shoplift, some did. “We were appalled,” said Beth Stern, who is a judge on the show along with Carson Kressley. “It was absolutely shocking. “[The contestants] were all very beautiful people, but we really saw their true colors come out.” All eight episodes, hosted by actress and former beauty pageant winner Vanessa Minnillo, were filmed in Las Vegas under the guise that the ten contestants—five men and five women—were vying to become “the face of Vegas.” In reality, the show’s producers Tyra Banks and Ashton Kutcher were testing inner beauty. “I guess they thought they would be on billboards promoting the city. They took it so serious and would do anything to become the face of Vegas,” said Stern, who lived at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino for a month during filming. “I really embraced Las Vegas,” said Stern, the wife of radio personality Howard Stern. “I had a lot of fun. The second you land in Vegas there is such a burst of energy.” So what’s True Beauty for Stern? “It’s helping others and doing what’s right. It should come naturally. If you see a woman struggling, what do you do? You help her,” Stern explained. “That’s what this show is all about, seeing what people do when their morality is challenged. The show puts you in their shoes and you ask yourself, ‘What would I do in that situation?’ It starts a discussion. It’s great television.”

The eight-episode season of True Beauty began May 31. 12

Gourmet Grab Munchbar: The New Trend in Comfort Eats Chef Bryan Ogden has ventured out of his father’s kitchen to open a comfort-food spot at Caesars Palace just a hundred yards away from the famed Bradley Ogden restaurant. The young chef has taken a basic menu and spiced it up, literally. His new Munchbar features items such as mahi mahi fish tacos with spicy guacamole and cilantro, and a Kobe beef chili with jalapeno cornbread. Located near the resort’s race and sports book, Munchbar offers other unique munchies for players on a poker break or those in a need of an affordable late-night snack. Munchbar sandwiches are twists on popular originals: tiny grilled cheese sandwiches served with a tomato dipping sauce, gigantic burgers, a shrimp po boy and a waffle sandwich made with crispy chicken, apple celery slaw and herb mayo. Munchbar also serves beer and wine, as well as a dozen specialty cocktails from eye-opening peach mimosas and pear ginger fizzes to clementine caipirinhas and cucumber gimlets.

Munchbar at Caesars Palace Hours: Tuesday, Friday and Saturday 11 a.m.-4 a.m.; Sunday-Monday and Wednesday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-2 a.m.

16

Flash back a few years ago to when the pool was a nice, quiet amenity at every resort in Las Vegas. A place to relax in a lounge chair, catch up on some reading and perhaps even enjoy a piña colada or a daiquiri as you cool down. Then, a couple of summers ago, something happened and we were introduced to what has become known as “daylife.” Yes, the party has found its way outside the nightclubs to the pools.

the best of the best

Now under the hot Las Vegas sun, resorts up and down the Strip have added new offerings. The music—sometimes spun by a deejay—is louder, mixologists have created special cocktail menus, bottle service has been added, massage therapists roam the grounds, and you no longer have to decide between the pool and blackjack in the casino because now you can do both. The Pleasure Pool at Planet Hollywood is open free of charge to those staying at any Harrah’s resort. Only an active room key is needed to enjoy the pool, which hosts “inFamous Fridays” and Bikini Bash Saturdays—Planet Hollywood’s weekly pool parties. The sunset party at Planet Hollywood starts at 7 p.m. each Friday and features celebrity deejays, while the Bikini Bash runs through September 4 with weekly prizes for women bearing the best bikini bodies. For those looking for their own space, the Pleasure Pool has 15 poolside cabanas offering bottle service and perks such as 42-inch plasma-screen TVs, lounge chairs and a two-person daybed. Last spring, Caesars Palace unveiled a multimilliondollar renovation of the three-level Garden of the Gods pool oasis, which features eight distinctly different swimming pools and environments. At the heart of it all is the new Fortuna pool, complete with an 18-foot waterfall, a bar serving signature drinks from master mixologists, and swim-up blackjack tables. In addition to pools, the complex has 44 private cabanas available for daily rental. Each comes with a refrigerator stocked with juice and water;

a flat-screen TV; a DVD player; an iPod docking station and wireless Internet access. Meanwhile, Qua Baths & Spa offers poolside treatments which include neck massages on deck chairs and fullservice massages in the large Jupiter spa cabana. “One of Las Vegas’ greatest assets is its abundant sunshine,” says Caesars Palace President Gary Selesner. “The new Garden of the Gods was created to be the definitive resort swimming retreat: a resort within a resort. Here, guests have the freedom to find experiences they particularly will enjoy in a five-acre retreat that perfectly complements the exciting nightlife and award-winning restaurants at Caesars Palace.”

Guests at all Harrah’s Entertainment-owned properties have the opportunity to pool-hop and enjoy the atmosphere at other Vegas splash spots as well. The Lagoon Pool and GO Pool at Flamingo Las Vegas are surrounded by lush gardens near the resort’s Wildlife Habitat. The Lagoon Pool has a waterfall and waterslide and areas where guests play pool volleyball and basketball. The pool hosts the Land Shark Fin Party every Saturday from noon

Women 21 or older are admitted free of charge. Non-hotel guests must pay an entry fee. The Pool Concert Series at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, happens Thursday evenings and will feature several Battle of the Bands concerts over the course of the summer. On other nights, national acts such as Filter, Hoobastank, Vertical Horizon and Crash Kings have been booked.

The recent proliferation of Mexican restaurants in Las Vegas shouldn’t be difficult to fathom. Both the dining genre and the city feed the body, mind and soul in satisfying—no, make that stimulating—ways. The only real question is why it took so long for this south-of-the-border trend to catch on in a place where visitors order up their transgressions tripleproof and extra-spicy. This philosophy of flavorful fun—not to mention the desert climate in Las Vegas—also provides the raison d’être for casual-dining watering holes like the Tequila Bar & Grill at Bally’s Las Vegas and Margaritaville at Flamingo Las Vegas, named respectively for Mexico’s renowned liquor and for the Jimmy Buffett song that reminds us that Margaritaville is as much a state of mind as it is a place. Conveniently located within Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino are two other Mexican restaurants—Yolös Mexican Grill and Cabo Wabo Cantina—that take the notion of celebrating tequila to a level that had previously been reserved for fine rums and single-malt scotches. Yolös features more than 60 tequilas that can be sipped or combined with fresh

the dish muddled fruit from the margarita bar. Most interestingly, the restaurant promotes Tres Agaves tequila, since the brand produces agave nectar that Yolös uses for its naturally sweetened, organic margaritas.

The Mexican fare is fused with edgy flavors from the Pacific Rim, South America and the Caribbean; equally well-conceived as the drinks are dishes such as pan-seared mahi mahi with fried plantain, parsnip puree and citrus-coriander brown butter vinaigrette, or Kurobuta pork chop with pineapple jerk sauce and an apple slaw. As for Cabo Wabo, Van Halen fans might recognize the two-level, 15,000-square-foot cantina as the purview of Sammy Hagar, who spent years as the lead singer of the band. But tequila and Mexican food aficionados certainly know Cabo Wabo as the place to not only rock out to live bands on the weekends, but to also down the Waborita, the eatery’s signature margarita that’s made with fresh lime juice, Cointreau, a splash of Grand Marnier and the kicker: Hagar’s own Cabo Wabo tequila. “It’s a rock ’n‘ roll club with a Mexican twist,” Hagar says of his club’s aim of bringing the laid-back Cabo Wabo beach scene to the heart of the Las Vegas Strip. It is easy to be misled by the subtitles of some of the Strip’s other Mexican restaurants. For instance, Quesadilla, located on the fifth floor of the Imperial

Palace, calls itself “Mexican comfort food.” But items such as “borracho chicken,” in which the half-bird is marinated in beer and herbs and then sauced with tequila and chilies, is far from ordinary. Along those lines, Terry Lynch, chef at El Segundo Sol Taqueria and Margarita Bar, says, “El Segundo Sol captures the fun flavors of Mexico and offers a new dining experience in a hip and laid-back setting. From the Tequila Tasting Room [with nearly 100 tequilas] to the Street Taco Shack [grab a Stripside taco-to-go], there’s something to appeal to all guests.” Lynch estimates that his team makes “more than 3,000 tortillas from scratch daily” for the restaurant’s nine staple varieties of tacos. Patrons can enhance the tacos with both tableside-made guacamole, revved up with Serrano peppers, and tableside-poured margaritas, seasoned to taste. “There’s nothing better than washing down all the flavors and spices Mexican food can offer,” Lynch says, “with a cool and refreshing margarita, served with top-of-the-line tequila.”

A New Menu Elevates Yolös Mexican Grill

Yolös Mango Margarita Mango Mix: 1 1/4 pounds fresh mangoes 1 cup water 1/2 cup sugar Pinch of salt Like any chef arriving to head a new restaurant, Hector Hernandez had a few ideas for the menu at Yolös Mexican Grill when he made the move to the popular south-of-the-border-style restaurant at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. Hernandez had previously worked at America Restaurant, another ARK Vegas-operated eatery on the Strip. He added two dishes to the Yolös menu and then tweaked a couple of others—hoping, he says, that diners would leave the table knowing they'd just had “a unique and refreshing dining experience.” Hernandez says the menu “combines the freshest ingredients from different regions of Mexico” to give each dish authentic Mexican flair. Using fish flown in daily, chilies cultivated from all across the country and his special blend of herbs and spices in his marinades, Hernandez has easily put his stamp on the menu. The gaucho steak, a grilled red chili-rubbed rib-eye, is now served with a wild mushroom sauce and garlic-serrano asparagus. The organic salmon fillet arrives on a bed of Bibb lettuce with cilantro, baby greens, grapefruit and avocado. The newest items to be offered at Yolös get distinctly flavorful twists: the Prince Edward Island mussels, which are steamed in a broth of chipotle, lime and coconut and accompanied with cilantro pesto toastettes; and the Crab Cake Gordita with jicama slaw, served with an avocado cream. “Our crab cakes are prepared fresh each morning using a unique blend of spices to balance the flavor for this dish,” Hernandez explains. “It’s certainly a favorite on our menu.”

28

For the Drink: 3 cups ice 1 1/2 cups mango margarita mix 4 ounces tequila 2 ounces triple sec Lime wedges Salt Peel and pit the mangoes and cut them into large chunks. Place the mango in a blender with the water, sugar and a pinch of salt. Blend until smooth. Taste and add more sugar, if necessary. Fill the blender with ice and add the mango margarita mix, tequila and triple sec. Blend until smooth. Rub the rim of a margarita glass with a lime wedge and dip into salt to coat rim. Fill glass and enjoy.

Frederick’s of Hollywood Hollywood first went wild over Frederick Mellinger’s “little black underthings” in 1946, when Mellinger arrived from Europe with some eye-catching products. Today, Frederick’s of Hollywood remains a groundbreaking lingerie leader, having paved the way for the wonders of the push-up bra, thong and fashion corset. The sexiness exemplified in Frederick’s of Hollywood’s wares translates into the décor of its retail stores, including the 2,554-squarefoot Miracle Mile Shops boutique, which boasts the brand’s signature red and leopard-print details. Hollywood glamour juxtaposes Vegas’ decadence in this polished, contemporary boutique carrying Frederick’s most exclusive lines. From corset collections to cleavage-inducing bras, “black label” to bridal lingerie, prices begin around $8 for boy shorts and go up to $90 for certain corset and dress styles. The Miracle Mile Shop’s Frederick’s of Hollywood location, which has been open since June 2007, offers complimentary bra and corset fittings by lingerie stylists to ensure curves and allure are maximized in every way. fredericks.com

Hard-Core Heroes

Sylvester Stallone teams up with Jason Statham and an all-star cast in The Expendables.

freeze frame

Sylvester Stallone lives up to his legendary reputation for pushing it to the limit with heart-stopping action in The Expendables, an homage to big-screen macho classics like The Wild Bunch, The Magnificent Seven and The Dirty Dozen. Stallone is the writer, director and star of the suspenseful thriller, in which he plays the leader of a band of mercenaries on a mission to take down a South American dictator. Along the way he put his cast in the middle of some epic fights and huge explosions to make every death-defying stunt look unbelievably real.

by Shep Morgan

The Expendables is about redemption, says Sylvester Stallone. “That to me is a powerful theme: a stereotypical macho man, very tough in his own world, who gets a second chance to change his life.”

“Making movies today, we’re incredibly gifted and versatile with computergenerated special effects,” Stallone says. “But I wanted to make a film that was more about guys doing things the way we did them back in the eighties and nineties, like in the first Rambo: actual, physical fights in which we went mano a mano.”

Movie profile

“Sly leads by example. He looks like he could push a house over and that’s how he behaves." —Jason Statham To put that raw reality on the screen, Stallone brought together an all-star roster of famous action faces, from Jason Statham and Jet Li to Dolph Lundgren and former NFL star Terry Crews, who play the men who follow him into danger. “It’s sort of like we found The Wild Bunch and gave them one more shot,” he says. “Only these guys are from a different world. They don’t fit in, which is why they’re called The Expendables. They know how to risk their lives to fight for the highest bidder but they don’t stand for anything. Nothing comes from the heart.”

Tough as Stone Stallone plays out that conflict in a character he wrote for himself—Barney Ross, a toughas-nails mercenary who’s finally facing a crisis of conscience—and in Barney’s encounters with a woman played with intense sensuality by Mexican actress Giselle Itié. “Barney goes to a Third World country where he sees people that are impoverished and can’t defend themselves,” Stallone explains. “He connects with [Itié], a woman out to stop a merciless dictator who, ironically, is her own father.” Barney finds redemption by risking everything for her cause. “That to me is a powerful theme: a stereotypical macho man, very tough in his own world, who gets a second chance to change his life,” Stallone says. “I’ve never met a person yet that has not regretted some moves they’ve made at some time in their life.”

Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham risk life and limb as they try to overthrow a dictator in The Expendables.

“When you say ‘stunt double’ to action guys...it just makes their hackles go up. It becomes this competition about who’s going to be the best at taking the hard knocks and moving on.” The Real Deal On the set, Stallone is driven to take risks and he expects his co-stars to do the same. Says Statham: “Sly leads by example. He looks like he could push a house over and that’s how he behaves. When it comes to stunts it’s all spit and sawdust with him. It’s the real thing. Sly had me literally hanging out of a rickety old plane diving toward the ground. But how could I say no?” With a chuckle, Stallone reveals why Statham wasn’t alone in skipping the services of a stunt man. “Everyone was given a choice,” he says, “but when you say ‘stunt double’ to action guys like Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren, it just makes their hackles go up. They’re so machismo. It becomes this competition about who’s going to be the best at taking the hard knocks and moving on. And Jason was at the head of the pack. The guy has guts to do some of the things he did.” But it was Stallone who suffered real pain. “I had to have an operation on my rotator cuff and my calf muscle which both had gotten torn up pretty bad,” he says with a shrug. “The doctor said, ‘You have to shut this movie down and recuperate.’ I couldn’t do it. My wife was there and she was pretty upset at the toll it was taking on me. I guess she’s learned to put up with a lot.” There was worse to come. Stallone recruited some leading mixed-martial-arts fighters to play the bad guys, led by former world championship pro wrestler, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. “Steve and I had a big fight scene,” he remembers, “and I wanted him to come at me with a classic wrestling move, p h o t o s c o u r t e s y o f l i o n s g at e ( b y K a r e n B a l l a r d )

“These guys are from a different world. They don’t fit in, which is why they’re called The Expendables.” just charge at me and bang! He hit me so hard it gave me a hairline fracture in my neck. I've got six screws in there to prove it. Does it still hurt? I can tell you when a cold front is coming the day before it arrives.” Stallone had some fun boosting the star power of The Expendables by recruiting two of his fellow action heroes for a cameo. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a competing mercenary and Bruce Willis is the mysterious money man who chooses Stallone instead of his rival for the mission to South America. Stallone reveals that the biggest challenge was getting everyone together on the set, especially since Schwarzenegger was trying to keep California afloat in the middle of a budget crisis. Stallone hopes that Barney Ross will join Rocky and Rambo as big-screen heroes who have endured. “I really wrote The Expendables as a story that will continue,” he says. “I always try to write things in trilogies because I see life that way. When I wrote Rocky, I always saw it as a trilogy, which was a little presumptuous considering I was an unknown. To me it was about the underdog, the champion, and then the fall from grace. With Barney Ross it will be about hanging on to that redemption.”

Shuffle Up And Deal! Millions at Stake During the World Series of Poker Joe Cada (above) won the 2009 Main Event at age 21 and became the youngest champion in WSOP history.

In 1970, legendary casino boss Benny Binion invited six gambling buddies from Texas to his Horseshoe Casino in downtown Las Vegas to compete in what would become the World Series of Poker. In the 40 years since poker great Johnny Moss took home the $30,000 prize for that tournament, WSOP—now held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino—has grown into one of the biggest gaming events, attracting thousands of players from all over the world and awarding millions of dollars. In 2003, poker exploded into the mainstream when the aptly named Chris Moneymaker earned his entry by way of a $39 online poker tournament and went on to claim the $2.5 million top prize. Today, players can qualify via Internet “satellite” tournaments and save themselves forking over the $10,000 entry fee for a seat at the Main Event. p h o t o s c o u r t e s y o f p l a n e t h o l ly w o o d r e s o r t & c a s i n o

reward play

The “Moneymaker Effect,” as it was referred to in the press, inspired millions of poker enthusiasts to take their shot at what has become the gambling world’s richest prize. The year after Moneymaker won, the tournament field jumped from 869 players to 2,576. Since then, the tournament has become globally famous—luring poker unknowns who ignite the game by managing to outlast the pros and win staggering piles of money. In 2006, Hollywood talent agent Jamie Gold won a record $12 million. Two years later, 22-year-old Peter Eastgate claimed just over $9 million. Last year, Eastgate’s record as the WSOP’s youngest champion was eclipsed by 21-year-old Joseph Cada, who bested a field of 6,494 players, including the world’s most famous poker sharks. The Main Event, held July 5-17, has the field of thousands battle until nine players remain. The tournament then goes on hiatus until November 9, when the final table (aka “The November Nine”) returns to the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino to play for the multimillion-dollar prize pool.

helping hands

Past tournaments have drawn stars such as Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jason Alexander, Charles Barkley, Dean Cain, Brad Garrett and hip-hop star Nelly. In just three years, Ante Up for Africa has raised more than $2.5 million. Typically, the players who win money in the tournament donate it back to the charity. “Don and I are still very passionate about this cause,” says Duke. “The people of Darfur still need our help. The opportunity to play poker with some of the greatest names in entertainment and sports is a wonderful time, and in so doing we raise awareness and funds for a great cause.”

total rewards

In 2007, professional poker player Annie Duke teamed up with actor Don Cheadle to establish the Ante Up for Africa celebrity poker tournament in conjunction with the WSOP. In its first year, the $5,000 buy-in No Limit Hold’em poker tournament raised more than $700,000 for the survivors of the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, Sudan. At the same time, the participation of numerous celebrities—a mix of Hollywood stars and poker-world legends—helped to raise the public’s consciousness of the issue.

Planet Hollywood Joins the Total Rewards Program Harrah’s Entertainment’s recent acquisition of Planet Hollywood has given the world’s largest gaming company another reason to extend its awardwinning Total Rewards casino loyalty program. Planet Hollywood has joined Total Rewards, a network of nearly 40 casinos across North America where just one card can be used to enjoy your favorite games and earn valuable Reward Credits. Raucous Road Show Comedy Gets Russell Brand to Planet Hollywood resort & casino

movie magic

A Planet Hollywood suite “became a character in the movie,” says writer-director Nick Stoller.

It’s one of the more epic party sequences in this comedy about a rock star (Brand) being chaperoned by a music exec (Hill) back to Los Angeles to perform at the legendary Greek Theatre. But what you might hear are screams for Combs instead of for Aldous Snow, the selfindulgent rock star Brand first played in the 2008 film Forgetting Sarah Marshall. “We got permission from the city and the police to shoot on the Strip but it had to happen really early in the morning. And we had all these people

screaming Diddy’s name when the car was going by,” says writer-director Nick Stoller. “In the end we decided we didn’t care. We were so happy there were pedestrians walking around at that hour and we figured Russell is playing a famous rock star so we’re just pretending they were shouting for him.” Even though the Sin City debauchery occurs toward the end of the film, the Las Vegas shoot occurred in the first week of the film’s production schedule. “We realized we didn’t want to shoot in Vegas in August,” Stoller laughs. But Stoller says he found a favorite locale in Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. Hotel guests will recognize the doors that lead out to the Strip and shots

of the hallways, but the Planet Hollywood suite, which Stoller says “became a character in the movie,” was later reproduced on a Los Angeles soundstage. “The Planet Hollywood suite is easily our funniest sequence in the entire movie. We thought about shooting at an actual suite,” he says. “But we kind of destroy the suite so it made sense not to put Planet Hollywood through it.”

Russell Brand (opposite page) plays out-of-control British rock star Aldous Snow in the film Get Him to the Greek, which was partially filmed at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. The movie co-stars Jonah Hill (top and above) and Sean “Diddy” Combs (left).

Robert Downey Jr. scowls at Zach Galifianakis as the pair plot their cross-country course with pooch Sonny along for the ride.

Highway Hijinks The Hangover’s Zach Galifianakis and Todd Phillips Reunite in the Hilarious Road Romp Due Date by Ryan Slattery

The comedic duo of director Todd Phillips and funnyman Zach Galifianakis are back together, in a road comedy that sends Galifianakis traveling cross-country with Robert Downey Jr.

told frankly, “Have you ever seen Forrest Gump? He ran across the country and he was pretty stupid.”

The storyline for Due Date has Downey playing expectant father Peter Highman, who discovers he has somehow ended up on the federal government’s No-Fly List and has just five days to make it from the East Coast to Los Angeles for the birth of his child. Questioning the airline representative on how he’ll get home, he’s

Instead, Downey hitches a ride with Ethan Tremblay—an aspiring actor played by Galifianakis—and early on learns what a long, strange trip it will be. Galifianakis carries his dead father’s ashes in a coffee can; when Downey asks why, he hears the obvious: “Because he’s dead, Peter.”

60

Says Galifianakis of Downey’s response to his one-liners, “When I watch Robert, his reactions to me are much funnier than what I’m doing. I’m a guy who comes from doing open mikes in coffee shops and he has been acting for years and it’s a little intimidating.” But Phillips explains the mutual admiration Downey had for Galifianakis on set. “It’s amazing how much Downey respected him and loved what Zach was doing. Robert would talk to me privately and be like, ‘This guy is unbelievable. He has so much talent.’ Zach has so much more to give that people haven’t seen in The Hangover or even in the other stuff he’s done.” As for Downey’s role in the film, Phillips says you get the real deal. “You see a lot of the real Robert in the film. He’s not in a costume. In this movie he’s stripped down and it’s just Robert.”
