EDITORIAL
Dear Readers! We can’t deny it winter is approaching – fast! The trees lost almost all of their leaves, many parts of the country have already experienced the first snowfall of the season and outside, it is getting colder day by day. This is why we are snuggling up in our apartments, read more often, put our feet up and are longing for warmth, for long evenings by the fire place. The calmingly crackling fire and the rustic and heavy scent of wood. Wood, fire and of course something fun to read – this is all we need these days. And this is why we dedicated our new sisterMAG issue to this powerful combination. With the beginning of winter, we can’t help but dream about late summer days. This is why our cover shoot in early October took us to Portugal with our partner, TUI. Having a little escape, catching the last rays of sun and saving their warmth for cold winter days. During the next two months we will present you with the sections “Time Out”, “Celebrate” and “Fire Up” on three different dates. Also, if you want to experience our productions, some very (!) early morning shootings or evening dinners live, make sure that you follow us on our Social Media channels (Instagram/ Stories, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest).

Our first section “Time Out” is all about the nice things you can do with wood. How do you work with different kinds of wood? Along with this, we gathered some beautiful DIYs with a very special kind of wood, the traditional birch. In “Time Out” we will stay home and enjoy some calm hours in our home spa. With L’ORÉAL PARiS we tried the most recent make-up trends, but also tried a new shampoo that works without any foam. Unusual at first, but with many advantages! The start of the cold season also marks the beginning of the party and holiday season. This is why our second section is all called “Celebrate” – and that’s what you’ll find! All of you know that: some of your friends already have all their presents since April, all the others can find inspiration and sporty, chic, cosy and cool ideas in our big gift guide! We also prepared a big feature for you on how to be a good host – useful knowledge for the upcoming holidays! In the last section “Fire Up” that will go live shortly before Christmas, we will talk about all the things that give us energy and heat up the last days of the new year. Starting with different chili recipes and hot drinks with ginger to sweaty sports trends and a report about the “Burning Man” festival – for all those who want to make some travel plans for the new year!

Many new members were involved in the creation of our “Wood and Fire” issue. We are happy to have Olga, Ulrike and Charlie (who you could already see as a model in our Halloween-Special) on board as our new content interns, who bring in their ideas and opinions. Franzi and Songie liked their time with us so much that we could convince them to stay with us as student trainees for Content and Design – which we are very happy about! Unfortunately, we had to say good bye to Luisa (Marketing & Social Media). She found a new, exciting task and we wish all the best to her. And we can still recommend her Instagram channel (@louisancel) for beautiful pictures of Paris and Berlin! Many tasks and projects also mean, that we need help for content sourcing and project management. For all who are excited about sisterMAG and could see themselves working with us, should check out our job description (here). We would love to hear from you. There is a lot to discover in the new sisterMAG issue on “Wood and Fire” and we wish you – besides the pleasure while reading – a wonderful holiday season!

Good Wood! The Many Faces of Wood
Wood is the oldest and most versatile building material in the world. Furniture and even entire houses are made of it. We take a look at what else happens with wood and how you can tell the differences between our local trees.

The Many Faces of Wood Few among us are familiar with lignin despite its omnipresence in our homes and buildings. We’re talking about a chemical substance that accumulates in the cell walls of certain plants and turns those cells into wood. A tree is only a tree, for example, if approximately one third of it is comprised of lignin. However, the presence of another substance plays an even more important role in defining the term ›wood‹. Botanists don’t consider palms, bamboo, and other woody plants as wood because they don’t produce xylem. This tissue develops beneath the bark of trees and supplies it with water and other vital substances.
Wood as an energy source One thing that’s always been true about wood is that it has been the most important building material of humanity for centuries. It’s also been used as a burning material for equally as long. Surprisingly, almost half of felled wood today still fuels fire to provide warmth and energy. While only about three per cent of the wood produced in Germany is used in fireplaces and by heating and electricity plants, the percentage in other countries is much higher. This is especially true in tropical areas, where a considerable amount of wood is used for energy production. Indonesia is a leader in this category, where 83 per cent of the country’s chopped wood keeps houses warm and electrical appliances running. The problem, of course, is that Indonesians destroy so much of 13

their ecologically important tropical rainforest that it cannot recover from this massive output. Every five years Indonesia loses a forested area the size of Saxony, which accounts for two percent of the country’s total forest cover. Even greater is the number of tropical trees Brazil allows to disappear – a forested area believed to be as large as the whole of Belgium is felled every five years.
90 billion trees Additionally, the wood of tropical trees such as mahogany and teak is considered particularly precious as it is very hard, resistant, and level. For this reason, many tropical woods are used for the construction of high-quality furniture, as veneer or the interior of luxury pieces. If one is willing to compromise on the aforementioned qualities, however, wood from the rainforest can easily be replaced by that of native trees. Take, for example, the Swiss pine, which can be found in the Alps and has gained popularity as an indemand material for rustic furniture in recent years. Germany boasts a healthy forest ecosystem; about one third of the country's landmass is 15
SISTERMAG 27 | 11 / 2016
covered with forest, which accounts for 11.4 million hectares. Around 90 billion trees grow in the country, a good quarter of them spruce. Close behind are pines, while beeches and oaks are considerably less present among the most common tree types. Trees which are not actually native to Germany but have been settled here by foresters, gardeners, or similar professionals make up a significant share of just under five per cent. These extraneous trees include the North American Douglas fir, Mediterranean native black pine, and the Japanese larch.
Standing and hanging pine cones Most of us learned in school how to identify Germany’s most prominent trees. Since most of this information was taught in earlier grades, it’s likely been forgotten by now. What should still be retained, however, is the basic distinction between deciduous and coniferous trees. The leaves of deciduous trees look so

different that it should be relatively easy to distinguish a maple from an oak or a willow. In addition, some bear fruits like beech and chestnuts. The birch, of course, is most easily identified by its white bark. Identifying coniferous trees is somewhat more difficult since their needles look very much alike to the unprofessional eye. In addition to the arrangement of the needles, the cone also provides useful information about the tree. If the cone is on the branch, it is almost certainly a fir or a larch; if it hangs, then it can only be a pine or a spruce. When considering needles, the case becomes clear: on firs and spruces, the needles grow individually on the branch, whereas they are found in bushels on larches and pines. It is not quite true that all conifers remain green throughout the year, by the way. Four do not do this, namely the gold larch, the marsh cypress, the mammoth tree, and the larch. The latter is the only summergreen coniferous tree found on our latitude.

Timber processing is one of the most important sectors for the German economy. The industry employs more than 1.1 million people with an annual turnover of 177 billion euros. The sawmill industry and the wood trade, paper making and processing, as well as publishing and printing are all parts of the sector that encompasses forestry. One of the most profitable fields is the furniture industry, where nearly 12,000 German companies with around 134,000 employees yield a turnover of 20 billion euros a year. This practice sees almost every type of wood used for processing into tables, chairs, cabinets or armoires. The hardness of the wood is usually decisive – fir is rather soft, while birch very solid – as is the colour. Cherry and walnut trees have a very dark colour, while maple and birch are by contrast more of a light brown.

Furniture made of chipboard Chipboard plays an important role in furniture construction. These are boards made up of several layers of wood chips leftover from wood processing or from crushed old furniture. Glue is mixed between the chips, and the plate is then pressed together at temperatures between 200 SISTER-MAG.COM
and 250 degrees Celsius. The method was invented by the German electrical engineer Max Himmelheber, whose parents had a carpenter's workshop. Since only about 40 per cent of the damaged wood was recycled, Himmelheber wanted to increase this value. In 1932 he patented the chipboard, doubling the amount of recycled wood. Today, around seven million cubic metres of chipboard are produced in Germany, half of which is processed into furniture.
20
TIME
The biggest advantage of the plates is the extremely low-cost production – especially compared to furniture made of solid wood. On the other hand, the considerably lower durability of the wood is disadvantageous, and chipboards deform when exposed to a certain amount of water.
Wood bridges and highrises
OUT
Wood is still a very popular building material, by the way, and not just for barns, garden sheds, and picturesque farmhouses. High and long structures such as bridges, towers, and even multistorey houses can also consist entirely of this natural building material. The Drachenschwanz in the Thuringian town of Ronneburg is the longest wooden bridge in Europe at 225 meters, and the 182-metre Vihantasalmi bridge near Mäntyharju in Finland can

even handle car traffic. In the Hackney district of London there is a wooden dwelling of nine storeys in which even the stairwell and the elevator, together with the shaft, are made of wood. This would not be possible for reasons of fire protection in Germany, so the two highest wooden residential buildings in the country – E3 in Berlin and H8 in Bad Aibling, both at 25 metres in height – each have a concrete staircase. Experts are of the opinion that constructing buildings with 20 floors made of wood is easy, so we can assume that a lot of wooden high-rises will sprout from the ground soon. SISTER-MAG.COM

Safety Woodworking gloves are an absolute must when you’re working with wood. Solid footwear is definitely necessary, and I would recommend using a dust mask when it comes to sanding. Wood dust is very fine and settles in the lungs
TIP You can find inexpensive singleuse dust masks at the pharmacy.
Preparation Every project should be well planned and thought out beforehand. A rough sketch will be especially helpful. A few questions you should ask yourself: What type of wood do I need for my project? Which tools? How much time?
TIP You’ll find knowledgeable professionals at timber shops who can help you select the right wood. You’ll also be informed about the best practices for wood treatment and preservation. 25
SISTERMAG 27 | 11 / 2016
Equipment You’ll need a stable foundation – like a workbench or secure table – to begin woodworking. For larger cuts I would recommend going to the timber shop so you can work with more precision. For smaller projects, a crosscut saw or electric jigsaw will be sufficient. A wooden hammer, sandpaper, clamps or screw clamps (for fixing), a cordless screwdriver, and a set of wood drills as well as wooden dowels and wood glue complete your basic inventory.
SISTER-MAG.COM
26
TIP Many cities are home to neighbourhood toolsharing projects where you can share equipment with others.
TIME
OUT
Sawing Wood Be aware of the width of your saw blade when cutting wood. Mark exactly where the saw edge should run and run the blade along the outer line. This prevents your work from becoming smaller than
intended. When using an electric saw – a jigsaw, for example – be sure to wear eye and hand protection. Otherwise, you risk stray woodchips getting in your eye and hindering your work.
Wood You can generally group wood into two categories – deciduous and coniferous. Deciduous trees grow slowly and the wood is usually harder. Coniferous trees, by contrast, grow quicker and the wood is often softer. You need to be aware of this when you start processing the wood. Glued timber consists of several layers of wood glued together. Its industrial processing makes it less susceptible to cracks, and it is often used for building models and furniture construction.
27
TIP Coniferous timber (pine, for example) is usually cheaper and sufficient for most smaller projects. Deciduous timber (beech, oak) is more expensive but also more stable and can handle more demand when processing.
SISTERMAG 27 | 11 / 2016
Sanding Wood
TIP Begin with a grain size of 80, and then 120, and then 180. For a very smooth result, you can finally use a grain size of 240. You can use your fingers to feel for small irregularities.
SISTER-MAG.COM
When sanding wood, you need to remember that it consists of between 50 and 90% fibres, depending on the type. Make sure that you’re sanding in the direction of the fibres, and not against. If you sand against, you’ll end up with large scratches that will be very difficult to get rid of. You should generally start with a rough sandpaper and continue to work down from there to achieve the desired result.
28
TIME
OUT
Binding Wood There are many different possibilities when it comes to binding two more pieces of wood. You could use nails, screws, or wooden dowels and wood glue, for example. For nails and screws, you always need to consider that the wood can easily split and therefore ruin your work. To prevent this, you should always drill a hole beforehand. To do this, select a wood drill with a smaller diameter than the nail or screw being used. Wooden dowels and wood glue offer a more aesthetically pleasing variation to binding
wood. You’ll still need to drill holes for this method, though this time the holes must have the same diameter as the dowels. You can buy depth stops at the hardware store that will help you drill the right depth. Before you put the wooden dowel in the hole, add a drop of wood glue to the dowel. You can then connect the two pieces of wood. If you use a clamp to apply pressure to the glued pieces of wood and allow the piece to dry for a few hours, you will end up with a solid connection.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO BECOME SELF-EMPLOYED AND HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR THAT? My enthusiasm for woodturning made me decide to do so. Before I became self-employed I made a business plan and got some advice from an association for business startups.
DID YOU GET ANY SUBSIDIES FOR YOUR WORKSHOP OR DID YOU FINANCE THE EQUIPMENT YOURSELF?
SISTERMAG: HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE YOUR OWN BOSS? Franz J. Keilhofer: Great! You can use your time as you like. Nobody snarls at you, and you don’t have to count on somebody else doing their job properly. But you need a lot of discipline, ambition and autonomy since you have the sole responsibility for your actions. When you don’t work you don’t earn any money. But on the other hand, working doesn’t necessarily mean that you earn money.
Back then, I didn’t meet the requirements for a business startup subsidy. I had some savings that I used to set up my first small workshop two years before I decided to become self-employed. After that, I bought more and more tools and machines. One year ago, I took out a loan to set up a workshop that meets my expectations (with some limitations) in order to work and produce economically.
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR LATHE? Unfortunately, it was very unspectacular; I bought it in a specialist shop. In my region, most people know what working the lathe means but just a few get in contact with it.

HOW MUCH SPACE DOES YOUR WORKPLACE TAKE AND WHAT’S THE BASIC EQUIPMENT OF A WOOD TURNER? The nice thing about woodturning is that you, unlike carpentry, need only a few machines and tools: a lathe, woodturning tools, the possibility of sharpening the tools and a chuck or a so-called driver. There are lathes that fit on a small table. For a hobby workshop, small space is enough. If you want to do the woodturning professionally you need a proper workshop. I have about 50 m² of workshop space, 40 m² of storage room and 20 m² of sales room.
IS THERE STRUCTURE OR CREATIVE CHAOS IN YOUR DAY-TO-DAY WORK? In my 12+ hours day, everything is structured: My workday starts at 8. From Monday to Wednesday, I’m in the workshop until 2 p.m. Since I am a self-employed private tutor for mathematics as well, I give lessons afterwards. From Thursday to Saturday, I’m in the workshop until evening. After that, I sit at the computer and take care of the »office« and other annoying obligations that come with self-employment. It sounds like a lot – and it is! But if you like to do it, it’s not that bad. In summer, it sometimes happens that I spent the whole day by the lake while others work.

If you have browsed Pinterest lately for DIY ideas to spruce up your apartment, you will have noticed that one material is all but inevitable at the moment: birch! Looking around elsewhere, as a matter of fact, you may have seen that birch isn’t only used to build things. It’s found its way into drinks, vitamins, hair care products, and cosmetics. So we have decided to dedicate a whole feature to this new – and, as you are about to find out, quite old trend. And just in case reading this article should indeed give you birch fever, we’ve also added some great birchbased DIY ideas for you to try your hands at. We wish you much joy on the hunt for the most suitable birch materials!
A
ALL ABOUT THAT BIRCH It’s a little odd that the birch should only have made its way into our consciousness now. The trees with their distinctly white bark - which, by the way, is what gave them their name; it comes from IndoGermanic and means 'glistening' – have long been used in northern parts of the world like Finland and Siberia. Birch-based products like jewelry boxes, hair brushes,
and headdresses are still a very common sight in Siberia today. The birch has a long tradition in Germanic regions, too, as the goto tree for a Maypole, for example. Traditionally, trees were brought from the forest into the town as a symbol of spring, which, ideally, arrived at the same time. The birch was chosen because it represents the Germanic goddess Freya, who
39
SISTERMAG 27 | 11 / 2016
is a symbol for love and fertility, much like her counterpart in Roman mythology, Venus. Love and fertility weren’t the only attributes connected to birches, however. For a long time they were also known as the »trees of protection«. After all, birches were basically our first reflector posts. Like most delineators today, the birch was easily visible even in the dark thanks to its white bark. This made it ideal to guide travellers through dark and unfamiliar streets. But not all the traits attributed to the birch were positive. It was thought to attract lightning, which is why it was often planted next to farm houses. And there is also the legend that the world‘s final battle will be fought beneath a birch tree.
My personal passion for the craft, which I got to experience first-hand on visits to my family in Siberia, has always been strong. It’s fascinating to see the strong, rugged hands of Russian men transform birch bark into the most artistic floral shapes and ornaments.

MEDICINICAL BIRCH Now that winter – aka sick season – is coming, everybody is looking for a simple but effective remedy. Birch is a great bet, especially for women with bladder problems. Birch water – which has knocked coconut water off the top of the »it drink« charts – is thought to give cranberry juice a run for its money when it comes to treating cystitis.
Birch water – also known as birch juice – has a fresh and sweet flavour and is packed with healthy ingredients like amino acids, iron, zinc and vitamin C; it is thought to be diuretic, purify your blood, and have a generally stimulating effect. Birch juice also only has 18 calories per 100 milliliters, so it won’t make you pile on any extra winter pounds.
Birch juice can only be harvested in a small window between March and May. In order to get to the juice, the tree’s bark is drilled into at a large branch, preferably close to the trunk. Up to 10 litres of birch juice per day can be extracted this way. The treatment is not detrimental to the tree’s health if the cut is not too deep and also closed up with sap immediately after the extraction.

BIRCH DIY As mentioned before, birch has traditionally been connected to the arrival of spring. But even with winter coming to our part of the world right now, there’s nothing wrong with bringing a little air of spring into your home. My personal birch connection is through Siberia, and since many people connect Siberia with winter, it again makes it a perfect fit. So to save you money on both a flight to Siberia and/or expensive furniture and decorations, we have compiled several birch-based DIY ideas for you in collaboration with three blogs: Gingered Things, mein feenstaub, and Puppenzirkus.
If you don’t want to buy birch at a home improvement store, you can just collect your materials on your next walk through the woods. Make sure to only take dead branches or trees, i.e. those which are lying on the ground, both for your own safety and for the environment!

1. Start by making even cuts on both ends of the trunk. If your piece is longer than required, even better; pick your favorite part and cut it accordingly. 2. Mark the spots in which you would like to affix the rope, making sure they are not on at the base of a branch. Your marks should ideally be 8-9 cm (3 – 3.5“) from either end of the wood. 3. Measure the distance between the two marks; this will give you the drilling distance between your holes. Mark the respective spots on your ceiling. Double check that you like the place and size.

If there happen to be two of you, it’s a good idea for the second person to vacuum the dust while the other one is drilling. 5. Once the hole has been drilled, insert a peg and screw in your hook. 6. Now take your rope and cut a piece of the desired length. We mounted our rail in a way that has it hang 1.6 meters (5.2 feet) above the ground – but it’s completely up to you. You may want to consider doubling the rope or chain. 7. Attach your pieces of rope to the hooks and finally the birch trunk. I wrapped my rope around the trunk a few times before I tied a knot.

If the holes in the beads are too small, use your drill to widen them. mind and want it to be thicker, more beautiful and shiny. That’s why we always look for new care products and shampoos. After all, the first step of styling is always a hair wash. In exactly this segment, there has been a revolutionary change in the last years. For a long time we believed: The more lather the cleaner. If it lathers nicely it cleans nicely, right? No – as many hair and beauty experts, bloggers and celebrities say who brought the trend of no poos and low shampoos from Australia to Brazil and America to the whole world. Hair doesn’t need lather to get clean. Lather doesn’t groom, it even can harm the hair! The containing sulfates and parabens attack the hair and can irritate the scalp. They can lead to dryness and a loss of natural hair oils. Lather also creates friction which damages the hair even more. That’s why there is the so-called no/ low/light shampoo movement that is looking for alternative hair care products. There are multiple ideas for such an alternative, and some of them

are quite unusual. They include vinegar and baking soda – alternatives that make the no shampoo euphoria quickly disappear because: Who likes to put vinegar in their hair? Also, vinegar is an acid that isn’t healthy for hair and scalp as well. The history of alternative hair care goes back some time: The first medial outcry started ten years ago in Australia. A journalist from Sydney revealed that he SISTER-MAG.COM

Because of the bigger awareness for the environment, the own body and the ingredients of products that we come in contact with, the alternative methods became more and more popular. The start of the low poos can be located in Brazil: In 2012, the term “low poo” was one of the

most searched words on Google. Mostly people from Brazil (especially women) looked for these products in connection with the word “curly”. Women with curly hair have special issues when it comes to dry, brittle and care-intensive hair. It’s no wonder that the search for intensively caring products that don’t make the hair heavy and are free of harmful sulfates ran its course in the South American country. But it didn’t take much time until the trend reached the USA. There, the disadvantages of frequent washing also became more known which is why the interest in shampoo alternatives like low poos was increasing frequently. 57

In 2015, almost ¼ (!) of all launched hair products in the USA were sulfate-free*. These numbers confirm that it’s not an empty and hyped trend on blogs anymore but has reached the mass market. At the same time, only 3 percent of these product launches didn’t contain any sulfates! Therefore, L’ORÉAL PARiS brings the trend from the USA and Brazil to Germany. WHA T’S THE FUSS W I TH LOW POO? Text: ANNEBETH BELS
Annebeth Bels is always up to date regarding fashion, lifestyle and beauty. She presents these topics on here Blog . She also discovered the increasingly popular trend of low shampoo quite early. For the reason that low shampoo has to be used a bit differently than normal shampoo, she will eloborate on this in the following.
SISTER-MAG.COM
Voluminous, shiny, healthy hair - who doesn’t dream of perfect locks? And yet, that dream so often remains just out of reach. We’ve all read the tips: brushing 100 times everyday before bed, switching up shampoos after your hair “gets used to them”, blowdrying with your head upside down... But at some point you realize that nothing seems to work anymore. Sounds familiar? Maybe the no-poo movement can offer a way out.
60
The no poo movement builds on the writings of Lorraine Massey, the author behind „Curly Girl: The Handbook“ She popularized the curly girl method, which revolves around cutting sulfates and silicones from your haircare routine, and cleansing your hair with conditioner. Sulfates are what makes your soaps and shampoos lather up, creating the suds that we are so used to. Silicones come in a wide variety of types, but most of them are supposed to coat your hair in a protective layer that, for example, keeps it from getting frizzy in humid conditions, or makes it silky and easy to comb through. Both sound pretty good right? Well, they are! In some cases. The thing is that silicones can build up in your hair, making it dull, limp and stringy. And sulfates are
harsh on your hair, stripping it of dirt but also of natural oils. Additionally, using silicones makes it necessary to use sulfates as well, because some silicones are not water-soluble, so you need the lather to get the silicone build up out. So if you want to stop using sulfates, you also have to stop using some silicones. Going Cold Turkey on sulfates and silicones helps curly hair retain moisture that would be stripped by the use of sulfates, and the natural oils present on the scalp help define curls that would otherwise become a frizzy mop. However, the no poo method is not suitable for everyone. It might be the perfect fix for people with very dry, brittle hair, but if you have mostly straight and fine hair like I do, it just doesn't work! I could wait years between sham-

poos, hoping for my scalp to adjust and produce less oil, but my hair would still be a greasy mess rather than magically healthy and clean. Adding conditioner would only make things worse instead of leaving me with silken locks. Thankfully, there is another way: low poo. Low poos are like cleansing conditioners. You add the creamy low poo product to your scalp and massage it in, also spreading it down to your lengths. You will not get any lather because there are no sulfates to create suds, but low poo is lighter than your regular conditioner, making it easier to rinse out without leaving your

hair feeling heavy or greasy. And yes, despite the lack of lathering, it really does leave your hair just as clean as a regular shampoo as long as you make an effort to really massage it in. This does require more effort if your hair is longer, though. I have a lot of hair, and when I use non-sulfate shampoos, I have to make sure I don’t miss spots on the back of my head. That's the first downside of using products like these. The second is that you need more product to wash your hair, because a non-lather formula doesn't cover as much hair as your regular sulfate shampoo does. So you're likely to run out quite fast if you use the Low Shampoo. However, your mileage may vary if you have less hair than I have, or a shorter haircut, this will be no issue for you. My boyfriend has totally fallen head over heels for this shampoo because it leaves his short, thin, wavy, fine hair soft but with body, and it makes it easy to style. I've noticed a huge change for his hair. Additionally, low poo
62
functions as shampoo and conditioner in one, leaving your hair moisturized and incredibly soft. In general, I can totally recommend experimenting with time between washes as well as sulfates and silicones, to see what works best for your hair. Let me illustrate what a difference it has made for me. On the left, I'm about 17, and at that time I used to wash my hair just about every other day with a pretty harsh shampoo. My haircut isn't that different from the one I'm rocking now, being long
hair with some layers starting at chin length, but my hair looks so. different. More body, thicker, not as frizzy (seriously just check my frizzy ends in the left picture) and just all around better. I don't even have to explain it, do I? My hair thrives when I dial back the sulfates and silicones and wash it less often. It also brings out the natural wave in my hair when I let it airdry. So I can only recommend that you give low poo a try f if you're not 100% happy with the way your hair looks!

the one for the office. Others like to wear sweatpants – that never lived up to their name – and the hoodie of an ex-boyfriend that they took from his wardrobe in happier times. Then again, others – like me – keep wearing the same clothes they wore when they left their houses in the morning. The reasons for that span from general laziness to idealism – in the sense of: I don’t change into something that I wouldn’t feel comfortable in anyway. But I also spend my lazy Sundays in my comfy wear – which is the latter version of the described looks.

There’s one thing different cozy clothes have in common: they let the stress of a working day slip away from you. With every piece of office clothing you remove you also remove the tasks of work, the responsibility and your role at work. The tough businesswoman turns into a caring mother, the fashionista becomes a little girl in a pink terry suit. The change of clothes after coming home has been a role reversal for a long time. However, before women entered the world of work, it looked slightly different. The fashionable woman slipped out of her multiple layers of petticoats, threw her Mary Jane shoes into the corner and whipped her apron dress on. For those of you who have no idea

It’s every child’s dream: A tree house. Your own fortress up a tree, your kingdom made of wood far away from the rest of the world. By the time most of us reached adulthood we had given up on the dream of one day living in our own DIY house built into a tree. But the secret yearning for the kind of place this represents, a secluded yet secure and cozy place in the heart of nature, has stayed with us. And in the light of our modern, urban, noisy and often times stressful daily lives that’s more than understandable. Maybe that’s why a few people have actually gone and grabbed that childhood dream with both hands and made it a reality by not just building tree-houses but entire hotels. And while some of them are „just“ ordinary hotels built entirely of wood, others do actually sit in the
topmost branches of stunning trees, just like a proper tree-house is supposed to. And they are no makeshift shacks either but oftentimes luxury temporary homes away from home, built in adherence with strict ecologic guidelines. And rooms made entirely of wood are just one aspect of a coherent vision, a hotel concept also includes sustainable restaurants serving local food, high-end spas and a wide range of leisure activities. What stands out about our selection is its diversity: The hotels introduced all put a premium on the use of wood, ecology and nature but despite their common values they are distinctly different destinations. sisterMAG has taken a closer look at a range of hotels in a number of different countries and ranked them by price and quality.

TONGABEZI LODGES LIVINGSTONE NATIONAL PARK / SAMBIA This hotel offers a high level of luxury as well as a view of the Zambezi River from its open lodges. From the thatched roofs to the lodge walls and furnishings wood is the main building material. This is also true for the so-called dog-house, one of several near by tree-houses, built on stilts in the forest. All the wood used to build the lodges has been locally and regionally sourced from sustainable plantations. The hotel proprietors also support local projects including AIDS prevention programs and the development of a local school project: 10% of their annual income goes to the Mukuni Community which builds houses for new schools and their teachers. The only draw-back about this hotel is its steep price: even in off-season a lodge will set you back 520$ per night.

HOW TO BE A SUPERMAN
What makes a strong woman? A very personal account by sisterMAG founder Antonia Sutter
Determination,
confidence,
discipline, willpower are traits generally accepted to be the basis of professional success. Be strong and visualize your goal, be strong and set out on the path to your goal, be strong and see it through, be even stronger and win! In the German language, which assigns genders to all nouns, strength is feminine and yet it has for the longest time been attributed to men for whom physical strength was

But as society changed from an industrial one to service-oriented, and now digital, physical strength became less important. Today’s valuable attribute is mental strength; a mental strength that enables you to face difficulties with willpower, see setbacks as important lessons, and keep your eye on the prize even in the most complex of situations. And while there may still be more men in positions of leadership than women, there are countless successful, strong women whose attitude and even mere existence

help change our perception. Criteria by which success and strength are measured are shifting – today’s successful people are very different from those of a few decades ago and they need a very different set of strengths. My personal yardstick for strength is the ability to assess and utilize your individual potential. It’s much less about achieving a career goal envisioned and imposed on you by your environment, but rather finding your own way and making the most of the possibilities that present themselves. This approach can help you realize a whole host of different goals: Your dream may be to run our own café or shop, or you may want to reach an executive position in a big corporation, or you may find self-actualization being a family person and mother. That’s how I discovered my love for start-ups and continuously shepherding new creations to success. Sometimes it seems crazy even to me to go and challenge longestablished companies, bundle my entire pace, determination and willingness to go the extra mile to achieve the impossible and establish my brand. We can see so many of our sisterMAG readers in our mind’s eye right now, nodding while they are reading these lines. Torn in their daily lives, struggling to deal with the pressures of balancing their nuclear family, work, friends and their wider family with their own true self every single day, they also ask themselves what this could possibly have to do with yoghurt and ACTIVIA. Nothing, really. And yet, everything! 70% of ACTIVIA consumers are women, which makes them the target demographic for the well-beingpromoting yoghurt. So it’s no wonder either that ACTIVIA puts special effort into understanding women and what motivates them. In keeping with this endeavour they launched a worldwide study* asking the decisive question:
What is it that keeps women from making their dreams come true? * About the Danone ACTIVIA InSync study Danone ACTIVIA, in cooperation with Google and GlobalWebIndex, conducted a survey of more than 150.000 women between the ages of 25 and 55 in Russia, the USA, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, Poland, Romania, Italy, Spain, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, Belgium and South Africa. Their goal was to gauge in how far the voice of the »inner critic« had an influence on the life of the participants surveyed. The study was conducted by a variety of partners commissioned by Danone ACTIVIA. The digital survey was executed by Google on 6th July 2016. The GlobalWebIndex survey conducted on 17th June 2016 was based on a multiple-selection survey.

The results confirmed that it is mostly our own inner critic who keep us from seizing new opportunities. The study also showed that those women who accept their inner critic and find a measured way to work with her are generally more content and lead more balanced lives. Balance is the key word and central concept which triggered ACTIVIA’s »Live #InSync« campaign. »At ACTIVIA, we believe in the potential within every woman. And we want to inspire women to follow whatever it is that drives them and find their own way to personal fulfillment,« says Mathias Blume, Danone’s Marketing Director.

These are the tried phrases, bromides even, you turn to when someone in a job interview asks you what you consider important in life – apart from your job, of course.
I started my own business and a work-life-balance became an important factor. Work-life-balance has to do with yoga and Chai tea. Against all good advice – how to rediscover your inner balance without detox treatments and breathing exercises
A balanced life – reading such a phrase, most minds will automatically jump to yoga classes and feel-good exercises, super foods, and the good old »finding yourself«. It makes me think of how much more often I should workout, how many more smoothies I should drink, and how much better I should structure my daily life. So I can’t help but wonder if I am really the right person to write an article about inner balance. Maybe not. But maybe there are many more women like me out there who think along the same lines, and by feeling the need to do more to maintain the balance in their lives they end up losing it altogether. The most important goal is a simple one: Finding the right balance between the pressure for selfoptimization put upon us by society and our own true self. Constant thoughts about how much better you could be will definitely screw up any inner balance. What does »better« look like, anyway? Can it be achieved by following one of the many guide books?
141
SISTERMAG 27 | 11 / 2016
Balance is, in fact, our default state - and readjusting our balance therefore relatively easy. But first we must bid farewell to the idea that we cannot do it without some grand master cleanse plan. And the one that everybody around us is so much happier, prettier and more popular than we are, too! Regardless of whether you think of social media as a friend or a foe, this misconception is in no small part its doing. Many bloggers – i.e. people like me who
SISTER-MAG.COM
use social media on a daily basis and even make a living sharing beautiful pictures and stories – have posted articles on how »social media is not real life«. Indeed, it is not! As I have to remind myself constantly. Facebook & Co. only show a fraction someone’s life, be they a blogger or a private person. Their real life is bound to look very, very different. There is no room for worries and sorrows on Instagram. It’s a place to share those special moments, unique snaps, and experiences so
142
wonderful you just have to share them. And that’s a good thing, because even if it doesn’t show a true cross-section of life, it does emit an endless stream of positive energy. Energy we can utilize and incorporate into our daily lives. It can help motivate us to achieve our goals. It’s an area full of fine and often blurred lines. And I am the best example. Just a few paragraphs ago I categorized self-optimization as something negative and now I am telling you to use the positive energy emitted by social media to realize it. Say what? Enter balance! We have to learn how to read social media, just as we have learned to read our environment, so we can put it into context. And it’s equally important to be able to differentiate. Selfimprovement is not a bad concept as a matter of principle. Starting with yourself is the right way to go in many areas of life – think of climate change, charity, etc. But – and that’s where it gets tricky – if this leaves you unable to appreciate anything the way it is right now, chasing a better life and constantly comparing yours to others’, you’re overdoing it. This will inevitably lead you to the opposite of what you set out to find. It’s a dead certain way to lose your balance. 143

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK ROUTINE IN A FEW WORDS? Johanna In the morning: choosing wood, producing boards in the workshop, packing orders, doing correspondence on the computer. In the afternoon, we are outside most of the time. Jakob Most of the time, I’m in
the woods. I start early in the morning; sturdy shoes, rugged trousers and a warm jacket are a must. Depending on the season, I plan the timber harvest, a new planting or a path, for example. To do this, I often walk across the terrain, off the beaten paths,

and see over the trees. If they are valuable stocks of trees, I look at everyone from near and far, walk around them and decide whether they are to be harvested or how I can help them with their further growth. At noon, I often have a hearty snack with some cups of tea in the forest before I continue. The trees for our serving trays are hand-picked, they are ones that I've overseen for a long time. WHAT DOES YOUR WORKPLACE LOOK LIKE AND WHERE IS IT? Johanna My workplace consists of
a wooden workbench and a studio space with a desk. It’s in the wood workshop of Forsthof Krümmel. Jakob Most of the time, I’m in the

COOKING WITH WOOD AND FIRE TEXT: CHARLIE TANQUARY ILLUSTRATIONEN: MATHILDE SCHLIEBE

Since the beginning of archaeological history, humans have experimented with the different ways to cook with fire. By the Paleolithic Era, 200,000 to 40,000 years ago, primitive communities had discovered the culinary power of fire. Ancient cultures all over the globe forged a crucial relationship with fire and wood, such as the Egyptian’s ‘earth oven’, the grecian rock oven, or even the Italian pizza oven! The ‘fireplace’ became the epicenter of communal gathering places a focal point in most homes. In fact, cooking with fire was a massive
evolutionary advancement for mankind, providing tastier meals, more nutrition and energy. Today, there is an estimated three billion people worldwide who still rely on an open cooking fire for their meals. With modern advancements like an outdoor grill or a barbeque, cooking with fire is significantly less intimidating! It can be as simple as a playful campfire roasting marshmallows or as intimidating as a 6-day long smoker. Not to mention, the benefits from preparing food with wood are hard to ignore.

The strongest argument for using wood as a source of heat is the raw rustic flavor. The particular hint of ‘smokiness’ is achieved through the natural flavors hidden within the smoke or sap of different types of wood. Some cuisine experts argue that using apple wood, almond wood and mesquite wood introduces a variety of flavors that even the finest spices can’t create. Jamie Purviance, author of Weber’s Smoke : A Guide to Smoke Cooking for Everyone and Any Grill , confidently stated that “the true grill master knows that using wood correctly is a key part of smoking food”. We gathered the most crucial information to understand the basic qualities of wood. Since all wood embodies diverse qualities, tastes, and scents, it is necessary to select the perfect genre of fire wood for your cuisine! First and foremost, the most popular fire woods
exist on a spectrum from mild to strong effects on cuisine. On the softer and mild side, fruitier woods such as apple wood create more of a sweet aroma. Known for its rich coloring, apple wood has the power to fill a room with a delicious and sweet aroma. The gentle flavor is perfect for lighter foods such as grilled vegetables or fish. In the middle of the spectrum, hardwoods, such as almond wood, embody a bolder and nuttier flavor. Historically, almond wood is routinely paired with game meats such as pork or beef, though today it is a great basic for mostly anything! The reliable aftertaste does not overpower the flavor from the ingredients which makes it the most popular choice of wood. At the opposite end of the spectrum, hardwoods such as mesquite wood are extremely dense both in durability and flavor. This is displayed through its key capability to burn hotter and longer than both apple or almond
167
SISTERMAG 27 | 11 / 2016
wood. Mesquite wood represents the authentic deep smoky flavor; often so rich it overcomes the natural taste of the meat. Used for a very niche purpose, these hardwoods are the perfect compliment for a lengthy smoked meat. So what is it with wood? Why is it so special? The beauty behind cooking with wood is how purely natural the entire process is. The incorporation of natural wood brings modern culture back to our society’s roots both in practice and in health. The textbook history of ‘man and fire’ reflects the primal ambiance when combining wood, fire and produce. This seemingly simple recipe connects us with a variety of cultures that perfected this preparation for more than
SISTER-MAG.COM
hundreds of thousands of years! Raw wood’s ability to provide a 100% pure heat source without added chemicals is indisputably attractive. The reaction caused when the flames meet the different types of wood is purely mother nature’s work; causing the variety of aromas, tastes, and textures. Most importantly, experimenting with a diverse group of woods, be it apple, almond or mesquite, and with produce is fun! Whether you are looking for a softer sweeter aroma or a hardier smoky flavor, playing with different blends is quite entertaining. Finding the perfect recipe, tending a good fire and tasting your result is without a doubt an extremely rewarding feeling.

for drying in the basement. He once chopped the cherry tree in the garden. The smell of the fresh wood is now, more than 20 years later, as present as it was back then: this mixture of forest, fruits and something indefinite, velvet-like. I rarely smelled something as good as that. Except for the smell of the burning wood in the chimney when my father explained to me that the heat of the wood is the saved energy of the sun. Thinking of that, a pleasant shiver came over me while I was surrounded by the delicious smell of smoke. The smell of wood triggers something pleasant in many people. Like in Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, the protagonist of Patrick Süskind’s novel »Perfume«. »The upper logs smelled burnt and sweet, a scent of moss came up from the bottom of the pile, and in the heat, the crumbly smell of resin fell off the spruce walls

of the shed. Grenouille drank this smell, he drowned in it, impregnated himself up to the last inner pore, became wood himself«. The smell provokes something in the man with the unnatural sense of smell that only the smell of young women can do – it put him in a state of voluptuous rage. In his poem »La Chevelure,« Charles Baudelaire draws direct parallels between the smell of wood and forest and the one of a desired woman. First, he writes about her hair, and then he feels »the fragrant forest spraying from her depths.« Pablo Neruda’s »Ode to the smell of wood« sounds like a love poem as well. In it, he enthuses about the balsamic smell that touches his heart like a memory. The ode says: »The smell of the deepest rose, the heart cut from the earth, something that invaded me like a wave breaking loose from time and it lost itself in me«. Wood and eroticism? It’s not that absurd at all. Because the smell of freshly

chopped logs actually reminds us of warm skin in the sun. It’s no wonder that people have been distilling oils from wood and using it as scent since ancient times. Nowadays, perfumers use it as basic note, whereby »wooden« is a particular fragrance group. For example, »Grenadille d’Afrique« by Aedes de Venustas smells smokily and darkly like ebony, and the British brand Boadicea The Victorious published a collection that contains agarwood which is known as »oud« and is more expensive than gold. A bottle costs more than 600 euros and smells warm and balsamic. In Arabia, women burn wood, stand over the vessel and perfume their bodies with it since the smell is said to be sexy. »Wonderwood« by Comme des Garçons smells of sandalwood that has a calming effect, of cashmere wood that gives floral fragrances of something wicked, and of harsh cedar wood. The fashion

label Dsquared also brought perfumes like »Velvet Forest Wood« and »Golden Light Wood« to market. In them, you can find scents of rosewood that was named after its floral smell – not the wood of rose bushes. I could continue listing forever because there are countless wood smells in the perfumeries. They all have one thing in common: The manufacturers describe them as mysterious. This is because they usually are unisex perfumes and therefore can’t be distinguished into fragrances for women or men. They combine heaviness SISTER-MAG.COM
and loveliness and therefore smell smooth, bitter and spicy at the same time. Also, woodsmells remind us of forests that have been inspiring us for myths forever. Put into the bedroom, the smell can influence our mood. For example, the fresh scent of the Swiss stone pine calms us down and balances us which is why beds and cushions filled with strands are manufactured from it. Other woods, used as parquet flooring or wall covering, provide natural room scents which is why some interior

designers are increasingly using untreated wood. And the natural wood scents last for years. This is because of the slenderly structured wood fiber that ensures that the scent molecules are dispensed into the surrounding. Thereby, the chemical compounds terpene and phenol determine the smell. Flavorings like benzaldehyde that exist in cherry wood and vanillin that gives the smell to yellowed paper are phenols. There is also a perfume with
Ultimately, it’s this Proust moment that ensures that all of those who grew up with the scent of wood like to surround themselves with it: It’s exciting but, at the same time, reminds us of familiar and simple things like rustic cabins, the old ebony casket that we store our treasures in, campfires and the pile of chopped wood that the father stacks in the basement. But you don’t have to use rustic oak for your whole interior furnishing. Smelling a piece of cherry wood every once in a while is enough for our memory.

Eva, how did you become what you are now – what did you study and where did you work before?
I’ve always been in the beauty Industry and I've always worked in developing products for different companies. So before my current job at L’ORÉAL PARiS I’ve been developing products for Maybelline, worked at the Estée Lauder group and a few stations before. My studies were in fashion and cosmetics, thus I already started doing internships in this industry, continued making products and built my expertise in Colour as well as make-up. It really has been a steady train!
When you say, that you had to build your expertise in colour, was there any particular way of doing that? Did you attend courses or was it just by discovering the world?
I think after getting both a fashion degree and a degree in cosmetics and fragrances in New York, I had a very good basis. When you study fashion you really get to learn everything about colours and combinations as well as textures. It is however really on the job that builds up the expertise and knowledge. The different jobs and positions at various houses helped me a lot and I think that each product that I have creatively developed has built up the expertise and skill set of creating the best products, as well as fine-tuning the colour or better the craftsmanship of colours. Where exactly in the process of creating a product do you take action?
My position at LOP is called “VP of Product Development” and also “Colour Designer for Make-Up”. Thus I start working on a product right from the very beginning. I look into all the formulas and innovations – as well as within the group of chemists but also outside of this group. I give feedback in terms of what the product will be like, take part in shaping the texture and briefing the lab. Once we find a great formula, that’s when the colour creation starts and I find my inspiration – separate from the product de-

Once we find a great formula, that’s when the colour creation starts and I find my inspiration – separate from the product development – in colour stories that will shape the whole colour range of a product group. There is a very strong DNA code engrained in LOP! Thus when I create a foundation for TRUE MATCH, I apply the rule of undertones for every women. Once we have the formula, that also takes effect on the actual colours: if it is a little bit dry, the colours will come out quite matte, sometimes it is more doughy or glossy – all of this has to be considered when developing an assortment of colours.

3 RULES TO FIND THE PERFECT F O U NDATI O N
Can you explain to us this philosophy of undertones? How did you get that expertise as a person and as a company?
I’ve already been working on skin shades and undertones for a really long time and actually developed custom branded products. Creating products from scratch – whether it is foundations or lipsticks – is really like working as a chemist and you have to know your theory. Every person in the world has a rather warm, a cool or a neutral undertone in their skin. This depends on your ethniticy of course, but also of your individual complexion, the tan of your skin etc. But how does a women find her undertone and the perfect foundation? What do I have to do?
When you try a foundation, you have to make sure that you don’t just apply it on the back of your hand, because your hand and your arm are actually much darker than your face. Hence I recommend trying it on your actual face, whether it is on your jawline or on the forehead. Another problem is the lighting situation: most stores have very harsh light from above – you cannot really judge whether the tone is matching you. Step outside of the store, see it in natural daylight.

Most women are also uncertain about their undertone when choosing from our PERFECT MATCH foundation series. I usually see it right away, however let me give you some pointers: If you wear a lot of gold jewellery and that looks flattering on you, it is probably because of your warm skin undertone – those people can also easily tan and get very brown, almost golden skin. People with cool undertones are, what I call them, a bit more rosy. They cannot tan in the sun, they often get very rosy cheeks or red skin when going into the cold. The people with neutral undertone are probably the luckiest because they can either go for the warm or colder hues. When it comes to foundation, the neutral products have a bit of a greyer cast instead of the yellow or pinkish flavour. That might sound scary to you, but it can actually be a great match! Women from India for example often have a neutral skin and need a bit more grey in their foundation. How do you try all these hues and shades?
That’s whats really great about the LOP team in general: We are a very international crowd, especially in the Make-up team with many different ethnicities from different parts of the world. So it is very easy for me to find, what I call my supermodels! In our foundation labs I can also use synthetic skin scraps, however I rarely have to fall back on them. I like using our products and colours on real people.

"RULE OF THUMB"«FOR LIPS
Is there a rule for the perfect lip color. Do you apply the same rules with warmer and colder tones?
As in foundation there are some rules or tipps I want to share with you. Obviously the best thing to do is trying any colour on your actual lips. You see what matches your undertone and go with that. However if you have to try it on your hand, use part of your thumb! The pat of your thumb is the closest colour to your lips – the back of your hand is actually quite dark and its tone doesn’t resemble the pinkness of your lips. If you have a warm undertone, you may want to choose warmer lip colours, which means that you have yellowish or brownish colours. However if you want to get more attention, you should actually go for the opposite of your undertone and strike a statement with a cool lipstick. Thus you can play with it in different ways. Most people however feel most confident and most beautiful when they wear a colour harmonious with their undertone.
F AV O U R I T E C O L O U R There are many color that I absolutely love – too many to name just one. But the lipstick color I feel most confident with is red. Since I have a warm skin undertone, I often wear a warm red, an almost orange tone. Fotografen: Fione Torre (FT) , Chris Roman (CR) , Jonas Bresnan (JB)

Do you often find that trends are very similar across the globe or do you find that trend agencies from one part of the world will see things very differently from another part?
It's actually both ways. Certain trends are definitely local, based on the local ideas of beauty and the respective climate. However, there are some underlining themes that are global, like the growing strings of natural cosmetics or smartly designed packaging. There
So going on to trends, how do you know what trend will become trendy. So how do feel that and where do you find them?
Trends are put together from many different aspects. The most obvious one for me is to look at what is going on in the fashion industry. What is happening on the runways in terms of colours, silhouettes, finishing and materials is very interesting for me, because it directly translates into make-up. Some industries such as the car industry are even further advanced. I actually look a lot at the car industry to find ideas for new metallic colours. Traveling is also very important for me: I go to make-up shows in North America, Asia and Europe. It takes a lot of different sources of information and matching it to what L’ORÉAL Paris as a brand stands for: Chic, Elegance, Expertise, Excellence and its Paris DNA.

are many trends, that start regionally, but then expand globally. You can see this right now in Germany with BB-Creams, which are originally from Korea. In make-up it's very easy to get trends from different international locations, but the art lies in identifying which ones will go from regional to international.

As diverse as today's world, so aree the trends every season in Paris. The trend »Pink & Gold« on this page is especially sensitive, powdery and fairy. Girlish rose tones could be seen numerous times on the catwalk in Paris. However, they are almost interpreted in a masculine way with edgy cuts such as at Haider Ackermann (here ) or Comme des Garçons with grotesquely drawn epaulettes (here ). »Since I worked for a brand that developed individualized products for customers before, I got my knowledge about skin undertones from scratch. The »True Match« line of L’ORÉAL PARiS follows this philosophy: Every woman, despite the continent she lives on, has a warm, a cold or a neutral tone in her skin! The foundations take up this knowledge which is why there are more than nine nuances with different tones. They perfectly adapt to the skin, give moisture to the skin for 24 hours and reduce skin imperfections!«

ÂťAnother trend that was really great: you saw a lot of sparkle and different kinds of textures during Paris Fashion Week! It really reminded me of eighties glam, maybe late Seventies with Studio 54. You could find this trend at Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen and many more designers where sequins and glitter was all over. All materials that really reflect the light and which also shows in which direction the make-up will go: multi-coloured reflections, sparkles and metallic looks!ÂŤ

BALLET NUDE
For this wonderful look that is supposed to look like being without make-up, I started with cleaning the skin thoroughly and providing it with moisturizing care. With the True Match make-up, I balance the skin tone just a little bit in order to conceal redness. Check the make-up on your neck to see if the color merges with the own skin tone – then it’s your “perfect match” (I used 3N for Andrea). With the glam bronzer, I stressed the cheekbones. Start at the back with a slanted rouge brush (JACKS beauty line No13) and spread the color evenly to the front. Then you slightly scurry over the nasal wings, the chin and forehead to give more color and expression to the face. My professional trick is to apply the bronzer around the eye with an eye shadow brush instead of an eye shadow. I leave the lashes as pure as possible and color them with a touch of mascara, at most. Then I set some nice highlights with the True Match highlighter – dab it on the cheekbones to the temples, on the nasal wings and the Cupid’s bow with the finger. That’s the key to this look because the highlighter provides a wonderful freshness. Don’t forget the eyebrows, go over them with a tone in exactly your hair color (Blow Artist in light brown) in the direction of growth and bring them in the desired form SISTER-MAG.COM

SILVER LINING
I perfected and slightly powdered the skin with the True Match make-up. I also put the transparent powder around the eye like an eye shadow in order to conceal redness and make the eye make-up last longer. With the dark grey from the Color Riche Quad Palette E5, I slightly stress the eyelid crease and the lower lash line to get a more beautiful contour for the eye. With a wetted eyeliner brush, I apply the light silver eye shadow like eyeliner, close to the upper lash line, and let it run out to the back. Because of the wet eye shadow, the color gets more intensive and metallic. On the lower side, I also apply some silver so it looks like I would reflect from the upper to the lower side. This lets the eyes shine more beautifully. I dab a soft rosewood tone from the Color Riche La Palette Lip Nude on the lips and the cheeks, one tone lighter on the pallet, like a kind of crème rouge. With this look, I only mascara the lashes slightly (VML Mascara) so the focus stays on the silver eyeliner.

HOW− TO
FUCHSIA
This is one of my absolute favorite trends of the season – a very pure make-up with flashy lips. There are no limits to the color world, just like the textures. I choose a matt fuchsia, the trend color of next season. The foundation can shine velvety – the more discreetly the more beautiful it looks with the powerful matt lips. That’s why I choose the Nude Magique Cushion Foundation for this look. I edge the lip contour with the Color Riche Le Lip Liner Magique transparent in order to prevent the lip color from leaking or blurring. Then I color the lips with lip liner – 285 Pink Fever – for a perfect opacity and apply the Indefectible Matt – 004 Oops I pink again – lipstick over it to get more luminosity and the perfect matt finish. You don’t need a lip brush for that.
