What a year! It hasn’t always been easy, but we’ve achieved so much and are incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished this year with sisterMAG Patterns and sisterMAG. There have been numerous collections, a growing community, and many new followers and customers who support us. We are so happy that we can move our project forward together.

Amid all of this, there‘s our agency, which we lead together with an amazing team where the work never ends ;-). This year, we also made small but significant changes in our office – from the new countertop in the kitchen to a thorough deep clean. It’s these little things that make a difference, isn’t it?

On a personal level, there have been many exciting moments and challenges as well. Toni and Alex took a wonderful trip to Colombia that inspired them deeply, and I (Thea) dedicated myself to the renovation of our house – an energy-efficient overhaul that came with many difficult moments but also promises a lot of positivity for the future. It’s amazing how everything is gradually changing, offering new perspectives.

Through all these changes, the role of sisterMAG

has also evolved for us. Of course, we would love to continue publishing 12 issues a year. However, we must face the reality that this is no longer possible with our limited time and financial resources. That’s why we’ve decided to turn sisterMAG into an annual issue. This way, you’ll find all the important collections of the year in one issue, supplemented by personal anecdotes, exciting interviews with bloggers, and creative, forward-thinking articles that will inspire both us and you. And a very special moment: For the first time, the three of us – Toni, Evi, and I – are on the cover of the magazine. It’s a feeling we want to share with you because none of this would have been possible without your support. What we have planned for next year: For the beginning of January, we’ve prepared a new collection made of

felted fabrics. We also want our Instagram to become more personal – we plan to be in front of the camera more often and give more insights into our work and lives. Additionally, we want to deepen our exchange with our sewists and perhaps even meet some of you in person to share even more creative ideas. And, of course, we hope that our mom, who has faced some health challenges this year, will be doing well. Her creative energy and ideas are irreplaceable, and we love her so much. We’re looking forward to the coming year and hope that you will continue to be a part of our journey. We have so much planned and can’t wait to accompany you with many inspiring moments and new ideas in the new year.

Perfect for layering: ZARA polo shirt sweater in plain knit
Currently in the Italian look: cell phone cases from Clementina Italy In love with Colombian craftsmanship: Waya Bags

There‘s no way around the Barn Jacket: this version from Mango is lined, casual and really cozy!

Maybe it‘s the green hype after Wicked, but we love green jewelry from Swarovski! Lucent creoles in green

With lots of positive feelings and a look into 2025, we say goodbye with this issue 69,

Yours, Toni & Thea

SPRING

SEASONAL STITCHES

Instagram @victorialucilleanne

Lives in ... Alabama / US

This summer, we met Victoria when she sewed our 19-1 Roman Holiday dress, and since then, we’ve loved seeing her creative projects and glimpses into the family life of her five-member household in Alabama. We’ve dedicated spring to her and asked her all kinds of questions...

When and how did you start sewing? Are you self-taught or with a course?

I think I started shortly after getting married. I desperately wanted some curtains and my mom was able to help me get started. She had a Bernina 930 that I was able to borrow and it was amazing to start sewing with. Then, a very long time passed without sewing in which I attended medical school and residency and had a little girl, my first child. When she was about 5, she wanted to be Anne of Green Gables for Halloween. I decided to make her a dress as a costume and it was so enjoyable! I started learning to sew just by sewing with high-quality independent pattern company patterns!

Where do you find inspiration?

My inspiration often comes from my travels and my love of French culture, although I’m also drawn to styles from Italy and Spain. I don’t really follow trends; I prefer wearing what feels right to me at the time. I’d say I’m a bit of a rebel in that sense! Brands like Sézane are always a go-to for ideas, and lately, I’m in a Christy Dawn phase, which has me floating around the house in beautiful dresses just for the joy of it.

Christy Dawn is a sustainable fashion brand from L.A., known for its feminine, vintage-style dresses.

Firs t ever

self-madegarment?

I hesitated to make something for myself after spending about a year sewing dresses for my daughter. The first pattern I used was a store bought pattern. It was a knit T-shirt. It ended up way too small because I chose the size I’d typically buy off the rack without checking my measurements. That mistake taught me an important lesson about sizing!

What is your next project?

I’m considering another loose, floaty dress, but I haven’t made a final decision yet. I also have a denim bomber jacket in mind—it’s made from a gorgeous denim with an elevated design that feels special.

SPRING

I would VERY much say I am a seasonal sewist. I think my preferred season is fall, but spring is a close second. For me, every season is very driven by colors. I live in Northern Alabama and it can be quite warm during the start of fall or even winter. Therefore, I tend to compose breathable, layered outfits that will keep me cool but SCREAM fall. By contrast, in the spring, it can still be quite chilly in Alabama. For this, I tend to wear lots of pastel layers and florals in the form of sweaters and pants. For me, it is REALLY driven by color, type of fabric, and fabric prints. For instance, in the spring/ summer I usually avoid wool and corduroy but in the Fall, I welcome these fabrics!

„I am definitely a seasonal sewist!“

For both spring and fall, I love sewing blazers—they’re staples in my wardrobe. I’ve made about four so far, with another one already cut out.

Favouri tes in Springand

al l

When do you start to sew for a season?

I usually start pretty early! I get bored with the current season and start looking forward to the next one. I like making transitional pieces ahead of time. For example, I begin sewing for spring in February, focusing on warmer clothing (as it is usually still a bit chilly here) in pastel colors to get me in the mood for the season. This year, I started incorporating fall colors into my sewing projects and swapped out the bright summer colors at the beginning of August! I feel perfectly at ease making a sleeveless dress that is in a darker floral fabric, pairing it with a cardigan, and calling it FALL!

My favorite spring project

My white linen blazer was definitely my favorite spring project. It’s such a versatile piece –I’m convinced it’ll be a forever staple in my closet. It’s light and breathable, perfect for layering when I get chilly, which is always!

„I enjoy keeping a knitting project on the side.“

What staple should not be missing from any spring wardrobe?

That’s a tough one, but I’d have to say a cardigan. I can’t live without a light cardigan to throw over floral tops when it’s not quite warm enough for full-on spring attire.

What was your favorite fabric for spring sewing?

Florals, hands down! I love tiny ditsy florals, and I also enjoy using pastels and some brighter summer colors, though I tend to reserve the most vibrant neon hues for summer. A poppy red dress would be a fantastic addition for spring; now that I think about it, I don’t have one, so that’s definitely going on my sewing list!

The Eight-Panel Dress – a timeless design highlight that captivates with its clever cut and skillful panel construction. Our mini collection for spring built on the success of our popular Six-Panel Skirt and brought this magic of a flattering silhouette to a whole new level.

Inspired by the elegant and feminine designs of Emilia Wickstead, this special dress in our annual edition provides the perfect base for individual styling. The secret of the Eight-Panel Dress lies in its sophisticated construction: the eight panels gently shape the silhouette, and the slightly flared shape emphasizes the waist, creating a feminine, timeless aura.

For a personalized look, the dress is available in three different lengths –Mini, Midi, and Maxi. This variety makes the dress ideal for any season and offers room for creative combinations. The EightPanel Dress looks particularly beautiful when worn with a blouse underneath. Whether paired with a classic white blouse for a minimalist look, a delicate lace blouse for romantic occasions, or a bold patterned blouse for daring fashion statements – the dress can be styled in many ways and looks great in every variation!

SUMMER

SEASONAL STITCHES

From the very first look at Lana‘s profile, we knew: her colorful and ultramodern style is exactly to our taste. Even better, the admiration is mutual! Last year, we had the pleasure of showcasing our bow blouse together with Lana. In our interview, Lana shares exciting insights into her styling ideas and creative daily life. Discover in her profile what inspires her and which trends she loves the most!

So, I got divorced and thought, ‚Hey, why not learn to sew? I can make whatever I want!‘ Turns out, finding cute clothes in Japan to suit my taste is like finding a needle in a haystack. So, I dove headfirst into a crash course on personal pattern blocks tra cing. After that, it was basically trial, error, and a lot of ‚Oops, I think I just sewed my sleeve to my leg.’

What was your first ever self-made garment?

My first ‚creation‘ was a dress I made for my doll out of our living room curtains when I was about 6. Mom wasn‘t too thrilled, but now she laughs and says, ‚You were born to be a fashion disaster.‘ My first garment for myself was a skirt.

„My inspiration is like a mood ring.“

Your

Another tailored suit!

If you scroll to the beginning of my Instagram, I am wearing it in my first post there.

Where do you find inspiration?

nextproject?

I know, I know, I‘m terrible at it. But hey, who doesn‘t love a good challenge? I‘ve made two so far and the thought of doing welt pockets, doing the collar, connecting the lining to the shell still terrifies me.

My inspiration is like a mood ring—it changes based on my feelings. I‘ve gone through retro, floral, and a whole bunch of what-wasI-thinking? phases. Now, I‘m all about practical pieces with a touch of Tokyobelle that I can mix and match without looking like a fashion victim.

SUMMER

I‘m definitely a ‚last-minute‘ sewist. Planning ahead? That‘s for organized people. Seasons are a huge inspiration for me. This fall, I‘m going all in on suits (again), pants, cozy jumpers, a skirt or two and I’ll make a warm vest. I don’t have a favorite season, I do have favorite garments that were inspired by a certain season like my white winter coat I made in collaboration with @minervadotcom. Tokyo doesn’t get any snow, but to me winter ain’t winter without it, so I really wanted to make a snow white coat.

I‘m a ‚start-sewing-as-the-season-starts‘ kind of person. It‘s efficient, right? Or maybe I‘m just a procrastinator.

What are your favorite fabrics for summer?

I love natural fabrics like cottons and linens. Breathable fabrics are a must, especially with hot weather.

How do you incorporate seasonal colors and patterns into your sewing projects?

I‘m a color-coordination disaster, but I‘ve learned a few tricks. I usually start with a color palette I love and then try to find fabrics that match. If I‘m feeling adventurous, I‘ll go for a clashing color scheme. Hey, it‘s either a fashion statement or a fashion fail—either way, it‘s fun! I will add that I am a huge fan of monochrome looks!

„I‘m definitely a last-minute sewist“

Favorite spring Project? The polkadot dress I designed in collaboration with @thefabricboker. Fabric & Pattern were like a match made in

For Summer I loved my lime dress –easy to make, wear & take off (which is important, when it‘s hot)

My favorite project in summer!

My red summer maxi dress! It was actually a total accident. I started with one idea and ended up with something completely different. It‘s a reminder that sometimes, the best things happen when you don‘t stick to the plan.

What staple should not be missing from any summer wardrobe?

For winter I‘m going with a whole look: the sisterMAG Pattern 61-1 blouse with vest + pants that i made in collaboration with @thelinenlab.co.kr

Dresses are my summer staple. I made six this summer! But let‘s be real, we all need more basic t-shirts and shorts.

How do you balance practicality with style when sewing for different seasons?

I‘m all about versatility. For example, a lightweight summer dress can be transformed into a cozy outfit with a cardigan and colorful tights in the fall. Or, a classic blazer can be dressed up for work or down for a casual outing. The key is to choose fabrics that are adaptable and to think about how you can layer pieces for different temperatures.

Inspired by the serene beauty of the Croatian Adriatic coast, the time had come in summer for „Evi‘s Signature Whites“ – a collection that combines timeless elegance in white and cream tones with beautiful patterns. Photographed during a family vacation, our mom and designer Evi wears all the outfits herself.

This collection brings together everything you need for summer: shorts and dresses, a few warmer pieces like a wonderful bomber jacket and the feathered coat with 3/4 sleeves, a blazer, and the fine jogging pants! Enjoy browsing!

The Dolce Vita Dress is the epitome of effortless elegance. With its flattering front inserts and wide straps, this dress accentuates the silhouette while offering both comfort and style. The dress is fastened with a zipper at the back seam, and the straps are buttoned at the back. Made from structured fabrics like cotton twill or denim, it’s perfect for those who appreciate refined yet easily wearable sophistication.

The lightness of summer in white tones: This outfit combines the feminine charm of the short smock with a back closure and feathers with the elegant clarity of the short pants with pleats. The feathered sleeves add a touch of extravagance to the classic white smock.

The ultimate combination.

Summer elegance

The 68-4 Jogger Pants with zippers and a fitted waistband offer a relaxed yet structured silhouette, complemented by a simple, elegant design. Paired with the 61-5 Oversized Patchwork Blouson – a statement piece that stands out with its unique cut and creative fabric combinations – the result is a look that is both laid-back and fashion-forward. The outfit is completed with the 08-6 Buttoned-up Bustier, whose clean lines and feminine touch provide the perfect contrast to the relaxed pants. Ideal for a stylish summer appearance or a casual day in the city!

True timeless elegance for summer: We love a light, structured blazer like our 56-1, which becomes a true eye-catching outfit when paired with a super airy skirt. Breezy, light, and the perfect balance between form and function. Ideal for sunny days or relaxed, stylish evenings!

Casual, Structured

This outfit combines subtle elegance with summer lightness. The Tailored SingleBreasted Blazer from the collection adds a formal touch, which is given a modern twist by the relaxed fit and open collar. The ensemble is completed with the Buttoned-up Busti er, which adds a seductive, feminine ele ment to the look. Perfect for a stylish day by the pool, where comfort and elegance go hand in hand.

A BRIEF CULTURAL HISTORY OF THE “ BOW “

Every year, it must be something new, more appealing, more extravagant, more striking. Following the annual Haute Couture shows of various luxury labels, the ideas keep getting crazier, often losing the appeal of wearability. In contrast, the current 2024 season saw the breakthrough of the idea to adorn various fashion outfits with bows. The bow, an accessory with various shapes, colors, sizes, and applications, received widespread, unexpected approval. Bows were everywhere: in the hair, on dresses, on the décolleté, on sleeves, and skirts. Who came up with this fabulous idea? - It remains unknown.

First ˝Bows˝

A promotional campaign wasn‘t even necessary since TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, and all other social media quickly captivated fashion enthusiasts and decor lovers alike. Feminine, girlish, innocent on the one hand, bows can also lead to an elegant lady look when made from sophisticated fabrics like silk. A welcome, unforeseen success, especially since bows in all imaginable forms have been known for centuries. Bows have played a role in the appearance of both women and men. However, the first ones to twist textiles into special ”knots“ were men - military men, to be precise!

Thousands of years ago, soldiers began tying these first ”bows“ or rather scarves around their necks to protect themselves from the cold and the pressure of their armor. During the time of the Sun King, Louis XIV (1638-1715), wealthy gentlemen tied light, fine, and valuable cloths around their necks. Only lace from Flanders or Venice met their standards. It was no wonder that the court ladies noticed these ”bows“. But once again, it was the men who set a new trend. They formed the necktie! Tradition has it that in 1692, English forces unexpectedly attacked French troops stationed in Steinkerk , Belgium.

“The [French] officers no longer had time to dress properly; they quickly tied their uniform scarves into a loose knot and tucked the ends through the buttonholes of their jackets. Voilà, the primitive form of the necktie (the ‘Steinkerk‘) was born.“

(Wachturm ONLINE-LIBRARY)

Under the French flag marched many Croatian soldiers and officers who wore these trendy neckties. Soon, these bow-shaped bindings were called ”cravates,“ possibly derived from ”croate,“ as some claim.

Duchess Louise de La Vallière (1644-1710), one of the Sun King‘s mistresses, was particularly fond of neckties. She untied the knots of the “cravates“ and tied them into large „butterfly wings,“ which the ladies wore on their silk evening gowns (the “Lavallieres“ ). However, the much more delicate male form, the wellknown “bow tie“ for individualists and free-thinkers among men, also traces back to her name.

In contrast, the so-called “ cross tie“ is a bow tie, also called a “ fly.“ A strip of cloth is worn around the shirt collar and tied in front into an artful bow knot.

Louise de La Vallière @ wikimedia commons

In the 17th century, bow fashion really took off for both sexes. Bows soon decorated various parts of the fashion-conscious. For women, the richly decorated “manteau“ served as outerwear, usually contrasting with the petticoat. Its heavy satin or velvet transitioned into a short train through ample pleats. This outer skirt was decorated with numerous bows, often adorning the neckline and shoes as well. French Baroque had a penchant for strong, darker colors. Bows adorned the garments in scarlet, cherry red, or dark blue. Bows were combined with complementarycolored flies on the faces of women (“mouches“). Men did not lag behind women in “bow fashion“: bows on trousers, sashes, or shoes came in all varieties and colors.

The Rococo of the 18th century enthusiastically embraced this fashion and further refined and enriched it. Excessiveness was the motto:

the front sides of the crinolines were decorated with bows, ribbons, lace, and artificial flowers.

An opulent use of bows, diminishing in size from the bodice to the waist, adorned wealthy women. Popular were sashes that lay above the waist and were secured with a bow at the back. Men wore coats decorated with embroidered ornaments and bows. They tied their hair with silk bows above the nape of the neck.

Dress MET @ wikimedia commons

The fashion of the 19th century was strongly influenced by the ideas of Romanticism. Emotionally charged and consciously feminine, women dressed to emphasize the female silhouette with tight tops, corseted waists, and wide skirts. Naturally, decorative embellishments, including bows, were suitable. More than in previous times, women beautified their outfits with hair bows . For outings, a “bonnet,“ a hat that framed the face, was worn. It was decorated with ribbons, bows, feathers, flowers, or tulle. The ribbons were secured under the chin with a bow. Men wore threepiece suits or even tailcoats and top hats. They used bows to impress with a “fly.“

With the industrial changes in societies, practical and less playful fashion prevailed at the end of the 19th century and, especially, in the 20th century. Major political events and wars contributed to this shift. However, hair bows also endured this time. They were combined with hair clips and varied in color and size.

The desire to decorate oneself was always present. Therefore, it is not surprising that in the past year 2023/2024, the fashion and interior scenes have been dominated by bows in the most beautiful varieties. Bows, along with ruffled or smocked dresses, lace stockings, and floral motifs, are part of the modern “Coquette Style.“ The aim is childlike lightness; playful, cute, and romantic is the order of the day. This cheerful, life-affirming, and optimistic fashion is very current— let us enjoy it and wear it!

BOWS –THE BIG TREND OF 2024?

Bows are a simple yet elegant accessory that has proven to be a fashion statement across centuries (see also the article „A Brief Cultural History of the Bow“ in this issue).

In recent years, bows have slowly regained popularity. In 2022 and 2023, they made a comeback on the runways, with designers using them not only as functional elements but also as decorative accents in countless variations.

In 2024, this trend has finally reached its peak. Bows are featured in many collections, appearing in various forms. You‘ll find them not only as earrings, necklaces, and bracelets but also on sweaters, phone cases, in outfits, as hair accessories, and even in interior design and food trends. Bows have become more than just an accessory; they‘re a real statement! Present on the runway as well as in street style, this trend offers endless interpretations.

BUT WHY ARE BOWS BACK IN FASHION NOW?

In politically and economically turbulent times—marked by inflation and crises such as the Ukraine and Israel-Palestine conflicts—fashion trends often reflect a desire for comfort and nostalgia. In such moments, many people seek symbolic expressions that convey a sense of security and stability. Bows, with their elegant and playful aesthetics, offer exactly that: they are nostalgic elements that evoke childhood and innocence, providing comfort in a turbulent world. This longing for a simpler, harmonious life is especially visible in styles like Cottagecore and Coquette , where bows play a central role.

o a t e g t c

The Cottagecore trend is currently very popular on social media as well as in lifestyle and fashion. Gaining significance during the COVID-19 pandemic, it embodies the desire for an alternative lifestyle—slower, more intentional, and closer to nature. Inspired by the idyll of rural life, it values nature‘s beauty, craftsmanship, gardening, and the coziness of a country home. Cottagecore offers a retreat from the fast-paced modern world. This trend is also reflected in fashion:

It features romantic, nature-inspired clothing with floral patterns, vintage cuts, and cozy fabrics reminiscent of simple rural life.

Here, bows play a particularly significant role. They adorn dresses and aprons made of light, flowing fabrics, often crafted from natural materials like cotton or linen. These bows convey a sense of softness and naturalness, perfectly complementing the Cottagecore look while emphasizing the connection to nature.

In contrast to Cottagecore, the Coquette style is feminine, playful, and romantic.

Bows are also a key element in this aesthetic, often appearing as large, decorative bows in the hair, at the waist, or as embellishment on shoes.

This aesthetic celebrates the sweet and delicate details of life, pairing bows with classic elements like delicate ballet flats, fine lace stockings, and ruffled, smocked dresses. This combination lends the look a dreamy quality, highlighting playful femininity.

It’s remarkable that this girlish look is so popular right now, even as women worldwide continue to fight for their rights. On the other hand, the Coquette style encourages rediscovering the inner child and embracing the carefree joy often associated with childhood.

On platforms like TikTok, the Coquette style has already gained immense popularity, with over 120 million posts on the topic. This not only demonstrates the ongoing fascination with this romantic trend but also shows how much it resonates with and inspires the younger generation.

Overall, the resurgence of the bow trend reflects that fashion is more than just aesthetics—it’s also an expression of our inner needs and the times we live in. In 2024, bows represent not only playful femininity but also a desire for security and tradition in an increasingly unstable world. Whether on the runway, on social media, or in everyday life, bows symbolize a link to the past as we navigate a modern, often uncertain present.

FALL

SEASONAL STITCHES

Lives in ...

London / Großbritannien

Alexandria‘s account is a real treat: stylish outfits, wearable everyday handmades and inspiring campaigns like #Worktober and #AprilTrenchtime always invite you to linger. We love her unique style and her charming way of taking us into her life and creative workspace.

When and how did you start sewing? Are you self-taught or with a course?

I started sewing seriously around 2018/2019 after being a knitter for most of my life. I had taken a brief course on how to use a sewing machine/ make a tote bag with Purl Soho back when I lived in New York a few years prior, but I mostly lear ned to sew by reading blogs, making garments and Googling :)

Where do you find inspiration?

The sewing and knitting community on Instagram is a huge source of inspiration to me. I followed many, many blogs back in the day but I feel like those aren‘t as popular anymore (just a sign of the times!). I also use my weekly runs around a nearby park to observe what people are wearing IRL. And I‘m always window shopping. It‘s fun to see what‘s trending!

What is your next sewing project?

While we‘ve been lucky with a mild autumn so far, I‘m thinking ahead to the long slog of a chilly winter when it comes to what to make next. I‘d like to make a few pairs of trousers and some fun leopard-print jeans and also a couple Christmas-related projects, including a tree skirt. It‘s a great time to hunker down, so I want to tackle pieces that are more involved!

Simply great! At the end of the year, Alexandria publishes her craft review: What she spent on fabric or wool and what projects came out.

FALL

I‘ve tried to tackle my sewing queue several different ways — make nine, sewing seasonally or strictly for the season ahead — but right now, I‘m just sewing whatever strikes my fancy. I like to make garments I can wear immediately, and I love sewing when it‘s cold out because then I don‘t feel so guilty for not spending more time outside, ha!

My favorite project of the fall

#worktober

Every year in October, Alexandria launches her #Worktober campaign! Throughout the month, she sews and presents her creations on the theme of office wear. For her, this means business and business-casual outfits, but everyone is invited to interpret “workwear” in their own way and take part.

What are your favorite autumn sewing projects this year?

My favorite autumn sewing projects this year were a Tilly and the Buttons Marnie blouse — the pintucks are so simple but have a great effect! — and a simple leopard print Closet Core Fiore skirt. Leopard print is having a huge moment and I‘m all here for it! I‘m also really happy to see browns and caramel tones be trendy — I love those and think they can be such a chic alternative to black.

„Brown and caramel tones are my chic alternative to black“

What staple should not be missing from any autumn wardrobe?

Autumn is all about layering and transitional weather for me, so I like to sew things that can be styled in multiple ways or dress up/ down — think skirts or the chic jumper I made from the sisterMAG Patterns „cosy in vanilla“ collection.

What was your favorite fabric for autumn sewing?

This is also the time of year I gravitate toward soft and drapey fabrics. I’m starting to look again at my knit fabrics and I recently bought some fleece. I also love autumn colors (that‘s my season!) and I try to look for stuff that‘ll make me happy as it starts to get rainy. (I live in London, so sometimes we get a great autumn and other years, not so much.)

Forest Tales

A COLLECTION BETWEEN SUMMER AND FALL

Photos Forest: Saskia Sandrock / @oh_hedwig

Photos Mannequin: Gabriela Morales / @gabimogo

Styling: Evi Neubauer / @neu1bauer

Model: Anna / @kukkakali

Production: Joshua Chiger / @joshuajosh97c & Thea Wittemann @sistermagpatterns

When we set out to create the „Forest Tales“ collection, it felt like stepping into a storybook—and the results are just as enchanting. This is one of our larger collections and was filled with many new sewing patterns that have quickly become personal favorites of mine. And I grew to absolutely love the color combination of Forest Greens and Light Blues!

The collection holds a special place in my heart, not just because of the clothing but because of the setting and the people involved. We shot the collection in the forest right in front of my house here in Berlin, capturing one of the last summery days of September. The light, the trees, and the crisp air created the perfect backdrop. The ever-talented Saskia, our photographer, worked her magic again, effortlessly bringing out the beauty of both the clothing and the natural surroundings.

Adding to the magic, Anna, our model, brought a deeply personal touch to the shoot. Anna is my oldest friend from high school and an avid sewist and knitter herself. Having her model these pieces felt

so natural and special, as she truly understands and appreciates the craft behind each design from our mom Evi – and of course knows our family very well. Thus, it felt more like a big get-together!

The response to the collection has been overwhelmingly heartwarming also from the sewing community. Seeing so many sewists embrace „Forest Tales“ and make the patterns their own has been a dream come true. From stunning interpretations shared on social media to thoughtful feedback, it’s been wonderful to see the creativity of this community shine through.

I can’t help but feel so proud of what we’ve created and grateful for everyone who has been part of this journey. Whether it’s the designs themselves, the enchanting forest setting, or the love and passion sewn into each piece, “Forest Tales” is truly a celebration of creativity and connection. If you haven’t explored the collection yet, I invite you to dive into this magical world—I promise, it’s a story worth telling.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU VISIT A FOREST?

Wald

This question may sound a bit odd, but it’s an important one. Studies show that even a 15-minute walk in the woods can normalize our heartbeat, lower blood pressure, and expand our lungs. We breathe better and can find our calm. No medication, no money – just time is needed to achieve this blissful state. The Germans, in comparison to other Europeans, are people who are most likely to plan a walk or hike in the woods. Italians or French might wonder when we eagerly reach for our hiking boots.

Our forests are ancient! They should be approached with great respect. Tacitus (circa 58-120 AD), the Roman historian, is said to have written about the wildness of the forests of Germania in the first century AD. It is well established that the forest has been slowly spreading across the European continent since the end of the last Ice Age, around 16,000 years ago.

Significant events have unfolded over time in the forests. For instance, Germania gained its independence through a heroic battle in the Teutoburg Forest. A Germanic army led by Arminius (or „Hermann“), a prince of the Cherusci, decisively defeated three Roman legions in the Westphalian forests in 9 AD, forcing Rome to abandon its plans for territories east of the Rhine and up to the Elbe.

„The Forest –symbol of greatness and strength“

he forest quickly became a symbol of greatness and strength – as well as an important supplier of wood, berries, game, and clean air. The tree roots, shrubs, ferns, and many small plants protect against snow and rock

avalanches, not to mention that forests provide shelter and refuge for countless animal and plant species.

The forest holds great significance for our ecosystem. Trees undergo their own metabolism through photosynthesis. Together with certain bacteria, they use light, water, and CO₂ to produce glucose and oxygen. In this way, forests regulate not only the concentration of CO₂ in the atmosphere but also the water balance and store carbon. Their influence on the water cycle ensures rain and affects temperatures. Globally, around 3.4 trillion tons of carbon are stored long-term in forest soil and trees.

Thus, the largest forest areas on Earth, like the Amazon in South America and the taiga that spans the North, are crucial for the global climate. Other major contiguous forest areas include tropical rainforests in Congo, New Guinea, Burma, and Borneo. Significant forest regions can also be found in Chile, Argentina, and southern Russia. It is estimated that about 31 percent of the world’s land area is covered by forests.

Forests are important, very important.

All countries

strive for successful forestry. France has been regularly reforesting since the 19th century. In England, where forest cover is only 17%, the proportion of forest has been increasing for years. Many areas here are privately owned. Italy protects large forest stocks in Calabria and utilizes significant forests in the Stilfser Joch and Tuscany for welfare tourism. With over 70% of its land area covered by forest, Finland leads in Europe. In the USA, about 30% of the land is forested. Recently, since the 1990s, forest growth in the western USA has signi -

ficantly outpaced timber extraction.

In addition to pure coniferous forests with spruces, firs, larches, pines, Douglas firs, and cedars, mixed forests with broadleaf species like beech, oak, elm, alder, or maple are gaining importance as they are more resilient in their composition.

The wood industry thrives on forests, which is why balanced forestry is important. A major problem is forest pests, particularly the bark beetle. It lives beneath the bark or burrows into the wood. Its larvae feed on the delicate and sensitive growth tissue of trees beneath the bark, destroying the regeneration of plants. Warm, dry weather promotes their spread, allowing 2-3 generations to deve -

lop in a single year. Mixed forests are being used to help prevent pest infestations. However, if the forest becomes infested, only specific insecticides can help against bark beetles; otherwise, the forest is lost.

We photographed „Forest Tales”, our fashion spread, in a forest north of Berlin. Berlin is surrounded in the northeast by a large contiguous forest area. After years with enclosed hunting areas, wide border strips, and dubious housing developments, we encountered a peaceful, inviting forest. All of this stirred our thoughts as we photographed Anna, our model, in our collection.

It didn’t take long for us to feel that the forest had long since recovered from the madness of past days. We delighted in the wonderful silence, enjoying the sun rays filtering through the crowns of the tall spruces, pines, beeches, and oaks. No blade of grass, no branch moved, although we still noticed how the fo -

rest breathed a gentle breeze. Lush moss wove its green velvet between the widely spread roots over ground and stones. Soon we spotted a glade bathed in enchanting light. The soft rustle of a badger, a squirrel, or a field mouse made us perk up. We began to wonder if there were foxes, martens, wild boars, or even snakes around? We couldn’t find any tracks, but our chatter and funny photo equipment would have scared them away anyway. We enjoyed the typical forest scent of trees, berries, grasses, and herbs. We felt truly comfortable, although the thought of having to be here at night made us hesitate, leaving a hint of eerie feelings as the forest rustled in the dark and the underbrush cracked.

So much of the earth is covered with forest. Places for everyone to relax. Let‘s do that!

Not surprisingly we asked Anne in winter for a signature look of this year: The ensemble of 69-4 Sweater with front insert and the 69-5 Hip Skirt with hem flounce. Who wore it better? Our model Kerstin (on page 182) or this little lady?

SEASONAL STITCHES

Name Julie Instagram @blooming_sewing

Lives in... Orléans / Frankreich

Original, friendly and with a huge dose of attention to detail - that‘s Julie, better known as blooming_sewing. Each of her projects starts with a charming teaser, whether it‘s a button on a kitchen grater or a walnut bun with a fabric sail. Her infectious cheerfulness simply puts you in a good mood - now you can get to know her and her creative ideas better!

When and how did you start sewing?

I started sewing in 2014. I was at school where I was studying young children to be an educator and work in nurseries after that. These studies last 3 years and we were asked to create a game for children. It was during an entire week and we were accompanied by professionals (like a sewist). I chose to build a teepee! It was made with wood and fabric. My mom lended me her sewing machine and I continued to sew

after that project. I started with accessories (I would like to thank my mom for saying «wow it’s beautiful» even if it wasn‘t haha) and then clothes in 2019. I’ve never taken any course but I’ve always been surrounded by a family who creates: my grand-mother sews and knits, my mom does the same and also plays piano and paints. I play music too!

What was your first ever self-made garment?

Well, the first ever garment I was able to wear was a skirt (thank you Instagram for helping me remember). A skirt seems to be easy, but the fabric was double gauze… plus, I added gathers and a rolled hem! I was soooo motivated! The double gauze didn’t scare me! Today, it is one of the fabrics I hate the most to sew. I like to wear it though.

Your nextproject Leather strap tutorial for a book … that will be published in the next few months but my next big project is a coat in a fabulous haute couture wool fabric. I am lucky to have a shop near where I live that sells fabrics from Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Balmain...

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration on Instagram and when I do shopping but mostly on Pinterest. Inspiration is everywhere, which is good and not good at the same time because you don‘t have time to sew everything you want. That’s why I still like to do shopping, even if I sew. It is quicker and easier!

WINTER

I am not totally a seasonal sewist. Last summer, the weather was sunny and very warm but I was sewing a jumper! I was very impatient to sew it and also, I am not very inspired by summer. I always wear the same clothes everyday: short + tank top. I prefer fall and spring because I have much more fun with outfits: I can wear tops and jackets, also scarves ... I mean in winter everything is hidden behind coats and wool jumpers. In summer, it is the opposite: you wear nothing! But fall and spring… party tiiiiime!

My purple swimsuit (ketchup cut by @sewlajupe)

When do you start to sew for a season?

When we start talking about the next season on social media. But also, when we start seeing new collections from our favorite clothing shops. We always receive newsletters with new items and it gives ideas.

Mein Hoodie-Poncho (Der Fließband Line Shop)

My embroidered shirt (oversize shirt from The Assembly Line Shop). I am also proud of every sewing project that I have designed myself.

My favorite project of the winter

Definitely my coat! Coats take so long to sew but how proud you are after!! Nevertheless, finding a nice and top quality fabric is complicated. I’ve been disappointed many times and it is very annoying when you spent soooo many hours making it.

What staple should not be missing from any winter wardrobe?

SPRING

My Moleskine jacket from sisterMAG Patterns! (I‘m not just saying that because this article is for you, but I‘m so in love with the shape and the fabric).

I would say, a sleeveless cardigan. It’s the kind of clothes you can easily add to every outfit and it can be made in so many fabrics. It’s the final touch and it also keeps you warm.

What was your favorite fabric for winter sewing?

Wool, obviously. Why? Because I’m cold most of the time (ALL the time is more appropriate). All fabrics that keep me warm are very welcome in my wardrobe. Velvet is also on the podium.

NOW OR NEVER

Lapàporter founder Ilka Brand in an interview about the founding of her label.

How did Lapàporter come about? What was your motivation for founding Lapàporter, and how did your journey into the world of leather accessories begin?

After my studies, I was searching for a chic leather laptop bag, which I couldn’t find anywhere. While studying abroad in Milan, I began designing leather accessories and discovered my love for the material. That’s when the idea to start my own label was born.

What does the name “Lapàporter” mean to you, and how does it reflect your brand’s philosophy?

The name is a made-up word. I wanted to create fashionable laptop bags, which didn’t exist at that

time. From fashion, I got to „prêt-àporter,“ and then combined it to form „Lap-à-porter,“ which later became Lapàporter.

What values and goals did you have in mind when founding your brand? I wanted to create a product that is durable and reflects craftsmanship while keeping the design modern and timeless.

Was there a particular moment when you knew you wanted to start your own brand?

I was working for a German fashion brand in Bremen at the time, and I remember walking through the city center in vain, searching for my ideal laptop bag. In that moment,

I recognized the gap in the market and thought, “I have to do this now. Now or never!”

What inspires you about working with leather?

I am particularly fascinated by the high quality and durability of the material. There are so many different types and processing techniques for leather. You never stop learning, and that’s what makes it so exciting.

What role does sustainability play in Lapàporter and leatherworking?

Each of my products is made to order, which helps avoid overproduction. Additionally, the products are long-lasting, which is my definition of sustainability. Leather is a byproduct of the food industry, and one could say it is one of the oldest forms of recycling.

Is there a technique you particularly enjoy working with?

I really enjoy working with vegetabletanned leather because it develops a wonderful patina over time.

What is the focus when developing Lapàporter products?

A Lapàporter product must always be practical and support daily life. It is important to me that the products are not only easy to wear but also make a great statement for festive occasions.

What distinguishes Lapàporter from others in the industry? What makes Lapàporter’s leather products unique compared to other brands?

Although they are primarily technical accessories, they stand out due to their high quality and sense of style. They complement business outfits perfectly.

Is there a specific product that is especially close to your heart?

My „Athene“ bag is particularly close to my heart because the origins of this design date back to my graduation collection. It is a large hobo bag that can carry a lot, is very chic and practical, and has an unusual shape. It is especially popular among mothers who need to carry a lot but still want to look great.

How important is the balance between functionality and aesthetics in your products?

That is always the most important thing for me and the foundation of every design. What aspect of your work brings you the most joy?

The variety that comes with running your own business. There are always new challenges to deal with.

How did you find your way into the world of leather? How did you acquire the necessary skills?

In the beginning, I had a few people who helped me immensely, which was invaluable. After that, it was mostly learning by doing. Back then, it was really hard to access information about leather processing. That’s why I also created my courses to pass on my knowledge.

What can participants expect in your leather courses?

Participants will learn the basics needed to independently create leather products. In addition to sewing, I teach leather and tool knowledge in my courses!

Who is your target audience for your leather courses?

My basic courses are for people who enjoy working with their hands, and no prior knowledge is required. The master classes, on the other hand, are for advanced learners who want to dive deeper into the subject and have attended previous courses.

What techniques and skills do you teach in your courses?

I teach traditional craft techniques like saddle stitching as well as sewing with professional sewing machines.

Are there specific projects that participants work on during the course?

In my basic courses, the projects are very diverse; things like phone cases, fanny packs, and shoppers are made. The master classes always have a specific theme, such as wallets.

How long do your courses last, and how are they structured?

The duration varies from two days to a week. The structure is designed so that participants can acquire both practical skills and theoretical knowledge to create leather products independently.

I offer both in-person and online courses. I also hold an online course twice a year.

What benefits do your courses offer?

Leather processing is very complex. It requires some knowledge to handle this expensive material well. By learning the basic techniques, participants are no longer afraid to work with this precious material.

Do you also offer special workshops or personalized courses, such as for team building or individual projects?

Yes, I am very flexible in this regard and can develop a suitable concept for any client. I have often participated in large events and worked with participants to create leather products. Christmas parties or team-building events are perfect for completing smaller leather projects.

What is the most common feedback you receive from participants in your courses?

I often hear: „Thank you for the great course! I’m so proud of my self-made bag!“

How can people sign up for a course, and what should they know or bring beforehand?

No prior knowledge is required

for the basic course, and it can be easily booked through my website. For the master class, it’s good if we talk or call beforehand to ensure the prerequisites are met.

What attracted you to working with sisterMAG Patterns?

I find it exciting to create an accessory again where it’s not about fitting a phone or another device inside.

What inspired you to collaborate with sisterMAG Patterns, and how do you see the two brands fitting together?

I’ve been following sisterMAG Patterns for a long time and find the designs very appealing. I thought it would be a great fit.

How is the handwriting of Lapàporter reflected in the joint designs?

The handwriting of Lapàporter is reflected in the joint designs through the use of high-quality leather and a modern, timeless approach. We’ve created lovingly designed products like brooches, pendants, and bracelets that embody my brand’s aesthetic and highlight the beauty and diversity of leather. Through the collaboration with sisterMAG Patterns, the creative sisterMAG Patterns community has the unique opportunity to dip into leatherworking and design individual accessories.
