Independent third year Capstone Project.
Schools are spaces that are underutilized public spaces. What if we open up the school to its near community and expose the students to the world instead of protecting them in a bubble?
The space is a language created and stitched together through a pattern forming a language. Each part of the environment is given its character by the collection of patterns which is built to create a social spaces within this envelope. Pavilions or small buildings are arranged to stimulate circulation and movement in the space. to allow for collisions and conversations. The structure follows the social spaces.
Height The site is surrounded by towering buildings on 3 sides. Hence instead of adding to the skyline, the proposed building is spread out with 2 levels to induce a warm homely feeling instead of an intimadating experience.
The social spaces according to the program are tutorial rooms, meeting spaces, teacher/student nooks, open collaboration spaces, sports complex, cafes and quite spaces. These spaces of interaction form a collage of experiences that enhance the student experience and wellbeing. The spaces are transition from low height spaces to bigger and then smaller. These differences in height aim to reduce this feeling of anxiety that is often free floating in a large open monolithic building. The materiality of the structure aims to engage the user’s senses by exposing them to the character of the material. Materiality truthfulness is

Puncturing the Building Green spaces have been introduced within the building as by puncturing voids. The purpose of the voids is not only to provide a green space within the building but it is also to allow for natural light to flood through the floor plates.

Green Mound One of the main concerns of the site was the lack of green spaces with in the school boundaries. The proposed site was the remaining green space. The proposed building, instead of covering this space, pushes the green spaces into mound while submerging the basketball court into the ground. The curved roof of the sunken sports complex then becomes a playable space for kids.
Negative Spaces The four forces create the main negative spaces in the main block. These voids acknowledge and create a face for each side of the site shedding the need for one single face of the building.

View B showing interior Courtyard Garden Ground floor atrium is a welcoming warm space. It is a social space for students and teachers. A space for mingle while on the way to class at 9AM. The warmth of the space is a result of using CLT panels. The atrium is intended to be used as an exhibition space by students or be leased out by the school after hours for events. All social spaces such as the cafe, informal and formal study spaces, library and the study stairs are located on this level.

Envelope is conceived around the idea of the relation between personal space and human behavior. Questions of what and how personal space evolves in different situations were pushed and broken down to understand the answers. This idea of personal space as a second skin was explored through its design and prototyping. In a group of 3, the design was an outcome of all our ideas and definitions around this idea of what personal space meant to us. From our initial design exercises we took forward the idea of using the pentagonal shaped fruit-lets as a building unit for our design and add an embracing aspect to its function and also to adhere the use of gadgets that have become a part of our personal space. As we progressed further in to the developmental process we used each panel as an instrument to visually represent our concept of personal space. The punctures of various sizes created on each panel show the variation in personal space.
To realise our deisgn in 1:1 scale, we prototyped and tested materiality and technology and modified our design to achieve its design intent.
Our final design model was built using dodecahedrons with movement joints and flexibility.

Design Studio Air was about designing a new order of column for the Northcourt Town hall that was designed in classical architecture. My ability of processing design in a more traditional 2D method and my inability of realizing the capabilities of parametric Proposed town hall
modeling was challenged in this studio. In the process of creating a New Order ,we gained the ability to create a space that had a deeper design philosophy through representational tools such as ornamentation, form finding and algorithmic modeling.

The use of parametric modeling to communicate and engage the user with structure by creating a dialogue is visible in our usage of material ornamentation, which was symbolic of the demographic growth and the flora and fauna of Merri Creek region. Using softwares such as Rhino 3D and Grasshopper allowed us to physically visualize the form and gave us the freedom to further develop and manipulate algorithms to suit our philosophy. Through the process of continuous iterations of Blended histories: a representation of the clashing representations of forms and ornamentation.

The proposed town hall is comprised of 2 parts that define the structure, the columns and the facade. Each column used is based on the different moments of the assigned Frog, and the facade shows the characteristic behavior of the assigned plant of the region.

Today, our present has become the future, it’s a time where lines between the physical and virtual realities are being blurred out and the city fabric has become densely populated by data and information. As architects, these formulate as the new site conditions and a need for a new medium of experience is required. One that moves beyond the 2D drawings of the unbuilt and towards a reality of space that is free of the physical constraints offering an infinite immersion and experience. Our project was about activating the public space through the means of augmented technology. It was a project that was focused on reengaging with the users by amplifying spatial experiences. Our site was a graffiti wall called the Jungle Oasis by the artist Makatron on Bourke street. It’s busy road traffic and proximity to the train station makes it an integral public space. We used the existing mural wall and layered it with our own interpretation of the graffiti in the form of digital graffiti.

Collingwood, Melbourne on a culturally rich site. It is a collection of 2 buildings that are different in height and materiality adtding to the complexity of the project. As a Student of Architecture at John Wardle Architects, I was a part of this project team in its final stage, Construction administration phase. Working on construction details, assisting the project leader on RFIs and visiting the site comprised majority of my responsibilities on this project.
