For many its secret is the light, as evidenced by the painters, sculptors and writers who came to live here at the end of the nineteenth century. And nature has been generous with Sitges, situated as it is on the coast of the Mediterranean at the foot of the Garraf hills. On a cultural level, its legacy of vibrant art and continuing traditions is unrivalled. Sitges has maintained its former status as a town of fisherman and peasants with important medieval references offering visitors a fascinating history. What is more, the town enjoys a cosmopolitan character thanks to the heterogeneous nature of the population, which is made of up of more than seventy nationalities. Currently 21st century Sitges is riding high on creativity, talent and innovation, but without losing sight of its roots. It continues to be a town that attracts and seduces.

In the Natural Garraf Park there is the Palau Plana Novella, the Buddhist monastery Sakya Tashi Ling, which offers meditation, relaxation, Tai Chi, Yoga... The Plana Novella is a large country house built by one of the Catalans who made their fortunes in the West Indies and it now houses an exhibition of Tibetan culture.

Sitges has a long cultural tradition which began in the modernista age at the turn of the last century. It is a cosmopolitan town which attracts artists from all over the world. Sitges boasts the legacy of Santiago Rusinol with the Cau Ferrat, Maricel and Romantic Museums, the Casa Bacardi and the Contemporary Art Foundation Pere St채mpfli.

To walk through the streets of Sitges is to discover a host of architectural jewels and iconic buildings: the houses of the “americanos�, those sitgetanos who in the 18th and 19th centuries emigrated to Cuba and Puerto Rico to make their fortune and on returning home built themselves imposing houses.

Sitges throws itself into its traditional festivals and the whole town joins in. Some of the most notable celebrations are the Festa Major in August, the Verema (wine harvest festival) and the feast of Santa Tecla in September, Carnival in February, the Vintage Car Rally from Barcelona to Sitges in March, and Corpus Christie in June. Another of the revived traditions is that of the “castellera� (human towers six or more men high) with competitions from April to October.

Did you know that ...? The Sitges Festa Major takes place between 17 and 21 August around the feast day of St Bartholomew. It has been declared of national interest by the Catalan Generalitat.
