WORKSHOPS & EVENTS ON THE OREGON COAST
CONNECT WITH NATURE AND EXPLORE YOUR CREATIVITY
Workshops and Events EST. 1970
COVER ART: Anji Grainger, Blackberry Reflection, Watercolor on watercolor paper, 2009, 22” x 30”
Welcome to the 50th year of workshops at Sitka In 1970, Jane and Frank Boyden started the Sitka Center to explore and celebrate the intersection of art and ecology, free from academic constraints. From that founding vision, Sitka has grown to host year-round programs that encourage the exploration of art, nature and the fertile space in-between. At Sitka, inspired moments and creative epiphanies happen every day. This catalog marks Sitka’s 50th anniversary year on the central Oregon Coast. Inside you’ll find over 100 spring and summer workshops and events to spark your curiosity and unleash your creativity. What if you could paint as freely as a bird sings or as patiently as a riverbed rests? Beloved Sitka instructor Jef Gunn will lead a retreat-like, five-day master class for experienced painters (p. 9). How can investigative journalism approaches deepen your fiction writing? 2019 guest author Rebecca Clarren returns to Sitka this summer to lead a one-day workshop for all skill levels (p. 25). Imagine if you
could replace industrially produced materials common in art and design practices with homemade bio-alternatives. Peruvian artist and first-time Sitka instructor Lucia Monge will share art-meets-science techniques and recipes (p. 13). From poets and plein air painters to botanical illustrators and foresters, our instructors are experts in their fields and engaging teachers. Our team works together to create an unintimidating community of sharing and exploration where everyone is welcome. Whether you are a returning workshop participant or discovering Sitka for the first time, I invite you to come and be a part of this joyous and celebratory year of natureinspired reflection, inquiry and creation. Looking forward to seeing you soon,
Alison Dennis Executive Director
Invitational events, to the more than 25 artists and scientists who come for residencies each year and inspire us all.

All Levels | Age 18+
Expressive artwork is enhanced by variables in composition. We will look at the scale of the figure, foreground/ background relationships and color. Each day there will be a presentation showing examples of artwork to demonstrate how important these relationships are to the creative statement.
This Sitka Art Circle workshop is an exploration into the visual/verbal portrait. How do we describe ourselves visually and verbally? Each participant will create a portrait with a written expression. There will be a brief presentation about selfportraits at the beginning of the fourhour session.
In this workshop, you will combine writing, image-making and guided immersion in nature to create unique, expressive visual-verbal creations. You will learn new ways to observe nature and your internal world. We will use fun, intuitive approaches. No experience of any kind is required.

Welcome to the inspiring, thriving world of ecological art! You will learn about artists making work that addresses environmental issues. You will develop an understanding of the brilliant tactics these artists use and consider how you can apply creative, ecological thinking to your own life’s work. Workshop participants will explore indigo, hand-stitching and quiltmaking. On day one, participants will dye fabric in an indigo vat using shibori techniques. On day two, participants will learn hand-piecing, hand-quilting, tying and binding techniques. We will then combine your fabric with other naturally dyed fabrics for a hand-dyed, hand-pieced quilt.
In this workshop, participants will create the illusion of curved planes, hills and valleys out of cut pieces of stained glass. We will explore light and shadow, transferring an image to the substrate, identifying and mapping the values, then applying nipped pieces of stained glass to recreate the image as a mosaic.
You are invited to an open enthusiastic approach to painting. You will be encouraged to follow threads of personal interest that can lead to the joy of discovery using a variety of approaches. Take advantage of the versatility of acrylic paints while working on a number of self-selected projects on several small panels and a larger one.
This workshop introduces screen printing techniques using painted filler and resist to make stencils. Strategies for design, uses of opaque and transparent inks, and registration will be applied to produce prints. Serigraphs will be shown to discuss the possibilities of the process. This workshop will explore the beauty of two-dimensional design and expression through the medium of cut paper. We will explore how this medium crosses many cultures and styles and then create images based on those techniques as well as personal inspiration. Each participant will leave with their own framed finished piece.
Tides rise and fall, leaving behind evidence of where water has been. Join Ruth to explore combining cold wax painting with assemblage and collage to create paintings that express the change and impermanence of the tides. You will work on several small panels using found objects with oil paint and cold wax.
This workshop engages memorybased writing in direct relation to Sitka’s two core ecological communities—forest and ocean. This workshop initiates and enacts a deep conversation about the ways in which memory shapes language. We shall write together from prompts, read aloud from our works and set goals for beyond the workshop.

All Levels | Age 16+
Employing some basic printmaking techniques, we will create artist books that have content expressed in both imagery and words. Participants will learn various basic printmaking techniques and structures that will explore sequences in visual and verbal narratives to create this unique art form.
Participants will learn or increase carving skills, gouge and chisel techniques. They will become familiar with at least two different woods. Emphasis is on learning about woods and experimenting with tools to achieve desired results. Participants will give thought to design elements and how they relate to the wood and the tool.
Trace monotype is an exciting method of mark-making that combines the qualities of printmaking with the expressive, direct joy of drawing and rubbing. Trace monotype allows beginners to jump immediately into printmaking and the technique gives skilled printmakers another tool for producing rich, layered work.
Using the imagery of the surrounding landscape, we will playfully explore abstraction with oil paint, cold wax and pigment sticks, which all create a rich luminosity. Working intuitively and abstractly on multiple pieces, we will explore texture, layers, composition, design and the use of color. You will complete several works.

Annual Art Invitational
The Sitka Center is located in Otis, Oregon (near Lincoln City) on Cascade Head, one of the most beautiful places on the Oregon coast, surrounded by spruce forest, open meadow — and boundless inspiration. Our office is located within a 0.66-acre facility that also includes residences, studio spaces and a library. Roosevelt elk, black tail deer and Northern Flicker sightings are daily occurrences. In June 2017, the Sitka Center acquired an 80-acre property known as Grass Mountain, located within the UNESCO Cascade Head Biosphere Reserve and surrounded by 9,670 acres of protected Cascade Head Scenic Research Area forest.
Each November, the Sitka Art Invitational takes place in Portland, Oregon, and showcases natureinspired art by over 100 Pacific Northwest regional artists. Talks and receptions provide collectors and the public with interactive opportunities to meet Sitka’s artists.
